think i may have found my first bad eno quote. genuinely no idea what the hell hes talking abt lol. tho he obv talks a lot abt liking steve reich and most sites reporting on this quote are taking it out of context sorta since he sorta tries to be like “oh well both are fine” but also just no clue what hes getting at with this one. well sorta like saying that more improvisied live drumming is more appealing than notated drumming but also p a strange thing to say especially in the context of drumming and in steve reichs work..

Mono Scene

An improvised form that takes place in a single location in a single span of time, with no external edits of any kind. It is frequently referred to as an improvised one act play. Usually played with 2 improvisers but can be played with a full team. Players can enter and leave the scene, but the scene should not be swept and there should be no tag outs or cut to/cut backs.

Hoodoo, like jazz, is Black as night. Hoodoo, like jazz, evolved out of a commitment to listening and way-finding, mastery and improvisiation. It’s ok if you don’t have the right color candle, white will always do. Water and salt are programmable and will walk whichever way you tell them to. This is a creative and innovative practice that has often born out of necessity. Your ancestors didn’t always have the luxury of waiting until the moon was full to work.

We are the daughters of the dust and the children of the yam. We are a people who can put the power of High John into a peach pit; a people who could strike dead a master with intention and a glare. The asé behind the working matters far more than the material thing you use to work it.

This post is not encouraging you to be lackadaisical in your practice, but affirming your ability to grow as a practitioner through making your hoodoo into Bitches Brew.

This is a very cool 1960 Rome concert by Dizzy Gillespie’s quintet with Leo Wright, Junior Mance, Art Davis and Teddy Stewart, who had been the drummer in Dizzy’s late ‘40s big band. It’s always a joy to rediscover the excellent improvisiations and the rich sounds of Leo Wright’s also sax and flute.
