Okay so with the line "the olive tree where we first met" we have two equal hilarious options.

When penelope was sassily like oh I'll marry you if you make a living bed out of this tree right here! Cue penelope stumbling over odysseus very very carefully digging up the tree "because how else is he going to get it to itacha we can't have a wedding bed out in the open in sparta duh"

2. Penelope, knowing that Helen's suitors would soon be arriving to take over her home for a while. Snuck out and went on her own wacky shenanigan filled journey where she scoped out all the major players. Odysseus caught her spying in an olive tree. And when she got back she told Helen she had dibs on the cutie from itacha.

wait, hold on.

"i need you to always be devout, and comply with this, or we'll all die in this, okay?" was right before Eurylochus went against orders to open the bag. and Odysseus was right, people died for it.

and Eurylochus doesn't go against a direct order after that. because he's learned what happens when he does.

but then Odysseus orders him to light up six torches, and he does it without question. because why would he question it? Odysseus knows what he's doing, of course he does.

then six men die. and Eurylochus is faced with the truth that there is no way to avoid tragedy. all paths lead to the same end. rebel against your captain, your friends die because of you. follow orders, your friends die because of you. there's no escaping the death that follows them, and Eurylochus always ends up with unintentional blood on his hands. he's exhausted.

i have so many thoughts always about "easy" kid sodapop curtis. he cries at anything but it's his horse getting sold and nature documentaries on TV and cute stray dogs and things that are manageable and small and easy for his brothers to brush off because they are facts and unfixable. he reassures pony that darry loves him. he tells darry he's doing a good job. he makes them both laugh. he placates and mediates. he plays dumb. he's good with understanding people but couldn't name half the things he feels. he is always happy and carefree and never hurt or angry and he doesn't want to worry his brothers.

the reprise of "you were the sunshine of my lifetime, what would you trade the pain for? i'm not sure" in the closing title track is glorious and makes the album feel like an odyssey through so much of their career and their transformations as humans and in music and storytelling, sealing the hurt and the cracks with gold, always persevering and building on the past without forgetting its resonance, reaching for something in that swirl of cosmos and chaos. the kind of pain you feel to get good in the end/i'm pretty positive my pain isn't cool enough. so what's it for? it's uncertain, and maybe that's how it's supposed to stay. they keep asking and keep reaching towards it. smash all the guitars 'til we see all the stars. that stardust symphony keeps singing.
