Four Continents Championships Review
Men:
Mikhail Shaidorov (Kazakhstan): Total Score 285.1 - 1st in the short, 1st in the free. I am actually so happy that he won. I was a little nervous about what condition he was going to be in after the Asian Winter Games but her was great here. His jumps were great! The 4Lz3T in the short was insane. He’s just a little jumping bean.
Junhwan Cha (South Korea): Total Score 265.02 - 4th in the short, 2nd in the free. Popped the 4S in the short, and the 4T in the free. Everything else was stunning. Really happy to see him in better shape in this second half of the season and I’m going to be rooting for him hard at Worlds!
Jimmy Ma (USA): Total Score 245.01 - 2nd in the short, 3rd in the free. Did not see this happening, but boy am I happy that it did. Only big mistake was going down on the 3Lo in the free. He’s usually really solid in the short but struggles a lot in the free so it was great to see him put down two clean programs.
Kazuki Tomono (Japan): Toal Score 242.01 - 3rd in the short, 4th in the free. Popped the 4S in the free and the 4T and 3Lo in the free. Very surprising for the top scoring Japanese man to be in 4th. Just really wish he was more consistent because I truly never know what’s going to happen when he skates.
Tatsuya Tsuboi (Japan): Total Score 234.93 - 6th in the short, 5th in the free. Kinda wish he placed a little higher but I’m actually feeling good about his performance going into Worlds. If he can hang in there and keep doing what he’s been doing this season I think he’ll be to get his job done.
Kao Miura (Japan): Total Score 230.58 - 5th in the short, 7th in the free. I was so happy to see him smiling and having a good time at this competition. This season has been pretty rough for Kao but I’m glad he came here and put down a performance he could be happy with. I hope he gets penalty of rest so he can heal up and do his best next season. I’m really gonna miss both of his programs and I wish we could’ve seen Umbrellas at its full potential with his good costume.
Women:
Chaeyeon Kim (South Korea): Total Score 222.38 - 1st in the short, 1st in the free. Her jumps were so solid. I’m so happy Chaeyeon won here at home, I wish she would let her personality shine through a bit more because I feel like she’s always so stoic. I think we can expect to see her on the World’s podium once again.
Bradie Tennell (USA): Total Score 204.38 - 5th in the short, 2nd in the free. Team USA really kept me on my toes in the singles event. This was her best skate of the season by far. Bradie has had to work so hard to make her comeback this season and I’m so happy that she got to finish it off with a bang!
Sarah Everhardt (USA): Total Score 200.03 - 3rd in the short, 3rd in the free. Had a little trouble with her levels in the Stsq with a level 3 in the short and a level 2 in the free. I cannot believe how solid she’s been all season. If she can get a harder combo in the short and improve her PCS she’ll really be one to beat next season.
Alysa Liu (USA): Total Score 198.55 - 4th in the short, 4th in the free. Popped the 3S in the free. To be honest I’m kinda over the free program. I just don’t think it fits her very well and her short program is just so stunning it doesn’t really hold up in my opinion.
Wakaba Higuchi (Japan): Total Score 195.16 - 7th in the short, 5th in the free. Stepped out of the 3Lz in the short but managed to save her combo with the 3F3T, and fell on the 3Lz in the free. I wanted her to do a little better here and I do think the judges were a little sparse with her PCS. Onwards to Worlds!
Mone Chibe (Japan): Total Score 195.08 - 2nd in the short, 7th in the free. This was so sad. She looked so ill during the free and I kinda wish she had just withdrawn. Basically had to be carried off the ice with how exhausted she was. Even though the free was rough I thought she was great in the free and once again I think the judges were a little sparse on her score.
Pairs:
Riku Miura / Ryuichi Kihara (Japan): Total Score 217.32 - 1st in the short, 1st in the free. Them ending facing the wrong direction after the free was actually so hilarious. Held onto both the throws in the free program, but this is definitely the best I’ve seen them this season. Love them both and I feel very confident about them going into Worlds.
Deanna Stellato-Dudek / Maxime Deschamps (Canada): Total Score 210.92 - 4th in the short, 2nd in the free. I am so over the short, but this was their best showing of their free. I was worried about them being in 4th after the short but I’m glad they were able to come back and make it onto the podium.
Lia Pereira / Trennt Michaud (Canada): Total Score: 198.4 - 3rd in the short, 3rd in the free. SBS 3T+seq+1A in the free was pretty rough ngl. Don’t really love either one of their programs but I do think the ending of the short program is very cute.
Ice Dance:
Piper Gilles / Paul Poirier (Canada): Total Score 218.46 - 1st in the rhythm dance, 2nd in the free dance. I love how close this competition was between these two and Chock / Bates. She got a level 2 on their Stsq in the free but overall their levels and GOE were great. I liked her new costume for the free.
Madison Chock / Evan Bates (USA): Total Score 217.93 - 2nd in the rhythm dance, 1st in the free dance. Maddy got a level 2 in the Stsq in both the short and free, but I swear nobody performs like she does. I love watching her during the free dance because I feel like she has so much attitude.
Marjorie Lajoie / Zachary Lagha (Canada): Total Score 201.04 -3rd in the short, 3rd in the free. For some reason he had a beard here and it was not looking great. She had some problems with the twizzles in the free which was a shame because they were pretty solid here.
Four Continents is usually my favorite competition of the season so I’m sad that it’s already over. It had some pretty good moments but it’s a shame that a lot of people ended up getting the stomach bug. Looking forward to watching what I can of Junior Worlds this week and then I cannot believe that Worlds is starting to creep up. I feel like this season went by so fast!
