Whoops! I love that the presentation has a bit more polish this year, but it's still Ekaterina Kurakova in there when the plushies hit the ice.

Polina Edmunds’ comments on Deniss from her recap of 2023 Skate America
“Another program I loved was Deniss Vasiljevs from Latvia. I loved both of his programs honestly. In the short program he fell on a quad sal and he’s kind of tilted on his triple axel, but overall with the program composition and just the choreography and theme in general he has such beautiful skating and skating skills and he has great choreography. His movement to the music is just so touching. He has outstanding speed and ice coverage like right from the beginning of the program. He skates to Hallelujah in the short and then in the free skate kind of more of that blues rhythm. I just loved it. Honestly it was really funny watching cause of course there were like screaming girls right at the start of his program when he does his like hair flip and everything and it was just cool to see a theme like this on the ice cause I feel like it just doesn’t really get done as often anymore in men’s skating so it was— I would watch the program all over again honestly live. I’m so glad I got to see it live this season but he just has spectacular command on the ice, the ice coverage, the flow, the speed, the ease of his movements on the ice – it’s an amazing free skate. And his step sequence, everything is just done so well. The choreography is done so well, so this is definitely one of my favorite free skates of the season I have to say. Unfortunately with the mistakes, so he missed his quad and then he also loses speed on his triple axel so I kind of feel like what he does is he leans backward as he starts to jump up so instead of jumping out and forward calmly and kinda trusting his leg strength he’s using a ton of energy even with the upper body on that initial take-off to get up and in doing so he’s kind of almost jumping backwards rather than forwards and I think it’s messing him up, he’s like at a tilt. He really just needs to get his heels together in the air, a tighter snap and not let himself fall during that like last half turn of his jumps. It’s kind of the same thing where he just sits down cause he’s not tight enough so he needs to keep the tightness and just check out and land to give himself no other option. I truly believe that if he were to hit all of his jumps, he would be so hard to beat. It would definitely be our top man because the quality of his skating especially live was just amazing to watch in these programs.”
