i had time to play a decent amount today and actually further the main quest & companion quests and. i dont have anything eloquent to say this time and im not feeling generous anymore... taash's writing sucks dogshit
#even if i ignore the whole. Solely Existing To Teach The Player What Nonbinary Means#their character is wildly inconsistent#they are constantly picking on other companions to a point that it's literally grating to have them in a party with some of them#namecalling emmrich and getting an entire scene about it and no one seems to realize how silly it looks to have#mx 'you dont get to tell me who i am'#repeatedly calling emmrich by names he doesn't like#same with calling davrin a spirit and saying shit like 'don't be ashamed of who you are' all sarcastic i just know they#felt sooo smug writing that line#also please god stop saying nonbinary it is so immersion breaking it's awful. i hate to say it but it's literally making me cringe#god i want to like them so bad. but i think taash and harding are the worst writing in the game#taash i want to like at least but i straight up hate harding lmao especially playing as an elf. why am i apologizing ?#and you literally cant call her out on any of it. soo frustrating#datv spoilers#datv critical

test in a severely endangered minority language later today and at this point I’m motivated mainly by spite to create better teaching materials because the ones we have right now are so insufficient. @ guy who decided to teach three tenses when the class only knows three verbs and include more dense examples of English linguistic terminology in a picture-less textbook with few opportunities for naturalistic sentence structure and immersion, I’m hunting you in your sleep
#My experience across three different severely endangered languages is that for various reasons#Many of which are the fault of the circumstances of their minoritization#The teaching style tends to be like 40 years behind how they teach German and Spanish and whatnot#Which sucks because endangered languages often need MORE instruction in everyday and casual language#Becwuse people are a) more likely to use them in casual situations in the home than in politics or economics etc (generally)#AND#less opportunists to immerse casually through hip hop and tv and whatnot

something I noticed about today's entry is how many short sentences there are :O jirt loves his semicolons but here he's building up the INTENSE suspense with all these itty bitty phrases and I was Glued To My Seat.
#lotr newsletter#i was literally like oh my god what will happen next (has read lotr so many freaking times)#no immersion today unfortunately i am doing the opposite of being chased by nazgûl (being talked at about teaching)

Look, is it sometimes inconvenient that 90% of my students don’t speak any English when they start the year with me?
Sure, sometimes.
But nearly three years after I met them, two years after they left my class, they still run up to me screaming my name with hugs and now fluent English. And that’s pretty cool.
#teaching stuff#and I do mean I’m lucky to get maybe 4 of them out of 23 that speak any English#but it’s approx after Christmas where the language just explodes#at this point most are speaking in English sentences#and understanding 100% of what I tell them#age and immersion people#it makes language acquisition very fast#I just told one of my students from my first year that her mom told me she used to complain about me#because I only spoke to her in English and she didn’t understand#I told her this in English today and she didn’t believe me#she barely remembers when she spoke no English#it was less than three years ago girl

this cold snap combined with being Obligated to visit my shit parents has me fantasizing about the fact that some day i will move hundreds -perhaps thousands- of miles away from here
#eliot posts#i'm not yet sure where tho#roughly considering georgia bc it's one of the more blue of the southern states#california is always an appealing idea but the cost of living Scares Me#could also move outside of the states#prolly to south america but europe could also be neat like spain or italy or somethin#i've only done surface level research on what it's like to like in various south and central american countries#but a few of em sound good for my wants. especially uruguay i think?#alas most of the pros and cons about emigrating from the u.s. are written by the Type Of Person to blog/vlog abt that type of shit#so their complaints are shit where it's like. that just sounds like how most ppl outside of like los angeles live their life#or shit that is very much like what ot was like growing up in my rural hometown#this one bitch was weeping and moaning abt there being no amazon prime 2 day shipping#anyway tho#i do know that the immigration process is very tough (tho especially in europe)#so that would have to wait til AFTER i've spent a few years here in the states setting up a stable life and saving up money#also definitely need to get better at spanish (or learn portuguese if i wanna go to brazil) bc my spanish SUCKS i talk like a preschooler#this one lady on youtube was boohooing about ''i thought i could just learn spanish through immersion'' LIKE BRUH#you just EXPECTED the locals to accomodate you when you didn't even teach yourself RUDIMENTARY spanish beforehand???#whadda fuck

my international school background is doing me no favors here my biology teacher was indian my geography teacher was scottish my business teacher was from turkey i have no idea how to pronounce things anymore. why are you asking me how to say cot. who the fuck uses a cot
#the ho rambles#though i am glad to have three different languages to reference. had no idea there were so many subtle differences between vowels tbh#btw this is just cementing my teenage suspicion that teaching phonics to children is actually a daunting task lmao#i only vaguely remember long vowels and short vowels like what child knows wtf a schwa is lmao#and how the r at the end of a vowel changes the sound?#like dude if you're not fortunate enough to be immersed in the language and. yknow. just acquire it#it's actually really hard to learn systematically

my mom is making me and ren Irish Pronoun shirts (that say 'tis himself and 'tis themself), and she also accepted my hand-me-down "TRANS RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS" and "KISS WHOEVER THE FUCK YOU WANT" shirts that she Will wear in public. my mom is so good actually
#also she gave her boy toy my motorcycle shirt. that is hysterical. help. i can't believe he identified the motorcycle on it and wanted it.#anyway mom also wants to get a tikkun olam tattoo with translation after i convert bc it means a lot to her#once i explained it and said i associate it w her bc she already taught me p much the same principle she cried#and tears up every time she remembers it so i think the tattoo would be both to support me/denote our connection but also#as an excuse to explain it to anyone who asks which feeds back into the first thing LOL#she has learned so much and is always so eager to infodump to ppl abt the stuff i teach her abt social justice and mental health#and now this too#idk. it’s very sweet!!!! but she should definitely not do it until i immerse LOL

One of my siblings apparently found out the hard way that we can't check out ebooks from the library. Because we all gave our library cards and log-in info to our middle sister, who's a preschool teacher in Thailand, so she could check out picture books to read to her class. So any ebook we check out goes to her kindle.

What the fuck discourse is going on that someone’s saying it’s a moral duty to intentionally scroll past things you can’t read?
Like, what am I supposed to be doing, clicking on something in French and mispronouncing it out loud while having no comprehension what it’s about?
Hypothetical scenario: someone is on Ao3, looking for fanfiction to read. This person only speaks/reads English, and they set the language filter to only show fics written in English.
We ask your questions so you don’t have to! Submit your questions to have them posted anonymously as polls.
#duolingo is free but it takes a really long time to learn a language#we don’t even normally teach kids to read till they’ve been full immersion in their first language for 5 or so years

more good news on the japanese learning journey...last night while playing y4kuza k1wami 2 i was idly listening to the ingame convo (side content thing) while looking at something else and only periodically looking at the screen and this character said a sentence and i understood the whole thing myself without having to look at the translation!!!
(granted it was 3 words long and ive forgotten what it was but still. very exciting moment)
#mine#i do remember the first word#笑わないで!! 'dont laugh'#anyway it was really cool. im glad i switched to a more immersion focused style i think its working for me#i dont regret spending time on structure and nerd stuff at all and i do still look at that stuff decently often#but i think moving into immersion and absorption is more what i need right now#jpmd and y4kuza is such a winning combo cause jpmd teaches me to read and to get to know japanese almost all on its own#since i can remember a lot of the english dialogue but not all of it and i dont have it in front of me while i play#so i get to know more vocab and structures#while y4kuza helps with my listening and teaches me real world examples of jp -> en translation/localization#its fairly rare for me to understand a full sentence like that but it does happen#and most of the time i can still grasp like half of a sentence and match up various words with the english subs#so it gives me a good idea of what kinds of things do and don't get lost in translation#and all the different ways you can phrase something#which is helpful!! i want to get into translating my favorite japanese songs so its really useful for preparing for that
