Happy One Year Anniversary to Boy King AU!!!! 🎉

Okay wait before I start talking, look at these close ups and the process!! Aren't they so beautiful aaaahhhh

Wow, can you believe it’s really been a whole entire year since my very first post about this AU? Well technically I first started talking about the statuette a day earlier, but the very first sketch was exactly a year ago!! Let us not forget the incredibly prophetic tag on that post: “also in the sense of this au i think the only ship that would work(historically accurate wise) is Vettonso.” Who knew that after that my entire life would devolve into vettonso, this specific period of history, and the lovely combo which is Boy King AU. Also wow this means it’s taken me almost a whole entire year to actually draw a joint portrait of them hahaha. I drew this sketch around the beginning of the AU, but never finished it. It’s fine though because this one is a lot better, and I’m in love with it. Took me a year to draw a couple portrait, and took me almost a whole entire month to finish said piece. 

Okay let me explain this piece, which I am very obsessed with!!! I dragged the process out more than I usually would, but I’m glad, because it was so enjoyable. But also look at that fucking crown, no wonder this took almost a month. Usually I’d write like 50 paragraphs detailing the characterization. HOWEVER! I’ve spent over a month writing little bits of characterization, mostly for fun, but also in preparation for this very post. A lot of the earlier ones, I had this drawing in mind, thinking on how I could expand on the ideas I was drawing. Though there’s definitely some things I could still write about. I’ll probably continue to write more Lore a Days, but yeah, they basically amounted to this drawing where you can actually see the characterization I was talking about displayed. Anyways, here are the explanations of bits in the drawing:

First of all, this is some part of the long process of their wedding. Look at the married couple!! Look at their rings!!!

Okay, but why are there two, almost identical looking pieces?? Because look at their hands!! I talked a lot about how Fernando is the one to give out affection more easily, especially in public, where he knows he can easily fluster Seb. He’s acting all grumpy and out of it, I mean to be fair, it’s probably been such a long ceremony across weeks. But he notices Seb is out of it too, just better at keeping his smile (let’s be honest, even if he’s distracted, he’s super smug.) So Fernando catches him off guard by squeezing his hand. Before that, as you can see, Fernando is just resting his hand on Seb’s outstretched palm, like that one scene from Succession. Very: yes I’m getting married, but I’m not happy about it. The combination of Fernando refusing to even touch him more than lightly beforehand but now going full force, them being in public, and Seb already being distracted catches Seb so off guard he has to try to cover his blush with his fan. He thought Fernando was being super impolite, but now he’s the impolite one!! Getting all blushy and giggly over a simple display of affection, perhaps even ha-

So. Their crowns. Seb’s wearing the crown of Austria, because he is in fact only a king still! Also, because I really wanted to try drawing it after I wimped out of it before in this drawing. Fernando’s a king as well by the point, but the fact he’s wearing only a tiara-like hairpiece is to represent how much of an outsider he still is. At this moment, he’s just Seb’s wi- ,I mean husband, to all these guests. Of course this bitch wears a black veil instead of a white one, to signal that he’s mourning the loss of his autonomy and personhood. Don’t worry too much about his mental state though, considering he’s not depressed enough to be able to resist teasing Seb. 

The fan, oh my god. Back in this era, people would gift/make fans for basically any occasion. To symbolize an event, to celebrate something, to show a story, etc etc. I wish I could have drawn something more narrative, but I think the bull vs. horse is good enough. Also you can see those same symbols on the pendants they’re wearing!! I’m so happy when I can fit irl, modern stuff like that into these drawings, it feels so clever!!

It’s so funny, I wrote a lore a day from a prompt about what they’d be like when doing a joint portrait, while I was already almost through painting a dual portrait of my own! So I got to explain some stuff like their clothing colors and poses before I even posted this. I feel very coy about that still honestly. 

Hmmm what else? It feels so weird to not expand on the characterization, considering I already did it for myself weeks in advance. I can’t imagine what it’s like opening this read more, and seeing more than 10 in-text citations. Happy reading!!!

 Happy anniversary to  this wonderful, crazy AU that makes me download 500pg German papers about 18th century etiquette. I drew a couple pieces of fanart before this AU, but I definitely think it jumpstarted my insanity about drawing/making AUs, and literally is what made me insane about Vettonso in the first place. Remember, if I hadn’t learned about Joseph I/Charles VI, most of my blog probably wouldn’t exist in it's current form. Thank you if you’ve stuck around since the beginning, or if you’re even just learning about it now!! It’s so incredibly niche but I’ve had so much fun researching and building this world and these characterizations, and I hope you’ve enjoyed what I’ve made in the process. I hope I can draw/write many more things in the future. I think next, I’m gonna maybe open up requests. I’d like to try to either write ficlets or draw chibi comics about specific Lore a Day posts on request. I think that’d be a lot of fun, but also will probably kill me. We’ll see!! Anyways. Let's analyse the drow!

Quick history on the drow: The drow have been historically characterised as ‘evil’, especially in earlier editions their alignment was always on the evil spectrum. Even Drizzt Do’urden for example was a story that essentially circles around one ‘good’ drow who managed to rise above the rest of his kin and become ‘one of the good ones’. I think we also need to acknowledge that in the earlier editions drow definitely had racist implications around them intentionally or not. With the drow initially being described as ‘completely opal black aside from their white hair’ and essentially just existed as the ‘evil’ elf counterparts to their perfect blonde cousins. Now in recent years wizards of the coast have started to rectify this. As of right now Drow have been described as being more purplish grey in colour and are steering towards being implied not to be 'completely evil'. There's no doubt about it that the drow have had a rocky history and being overtly over-sexualisalised by the early writers definitely didn't help much either. But I still think there's something very interesting wedged into this unique race of elves. 

Lolth's role: Their main goddess is of course Lolth who even in modern renditions is always depicted as a chaotic evil spider demon. You could argue she’s currently the main reason why the surface folk still don’t like these dark elves. Even in Baldur's gate three which came out last year the writers make a point of emphasising that the ‘good drow’ are the ones choosing to rebel against this goddess. Now obviously this ‘good’ and ‘evil’ thing has always been a core part of DND, which makes sense given it was inspired by Tolkien who consistently made a point about there being two sides, good and evil. And it's still a very common theme in modern fantasy but I think when we look at Lolth and her connection to the drow from a more contextual standpoint this insistence of ‘evil’ isn’t nearly as interesting as exploring the greyer implications of how this Goddess came to be. Being viewed as ‘evil’ in the dnd universe is natural as Lolth is written as a chaotic evil being, encouraging violence, the sacrifice of first born sons, and general betrayal among your fellow drow isn’t very appealing. It's enough for anyone to wonder why the drow worship her in the first place if they aren’t evil. However I think it's also important to remember in real life when we create gods they almost always reflect our world, the good and the bad. Let's take Zeus for example, he was a pretty shitty guy, cheating on his wife, kidnapping women and punishing people for petty reasons. But he was still worshipped, he just reflected power and kinghood. And kings aren't perfect or benevolent, they can abuse their power and take what they want. People are complex and imperfect and so are their Gods. So a similar sort of argument could be made for Lolth. 

How the environment shapes a culture: The underdark is almost always described as a harsh environment, with creatures like hook horrors casually wandering around, mushrooms that explode when touched and let's be honest probably not a lot of food in a place with little sunlight or stability. Earthquakes happen often here killing many and flattening villages. The underdark is without a doubt an unpredictable chaotic and cruel hellscape where death is a guarantee and often occurs for little to no reason. It's not hard to imagine how competition could become everything here. That means that every creature living in the underdark, even every other drow clan is just another competitor for those sparse food and resources in an already barren and harsh climate. In an environment so unforgiving and competitive you can imagine how a Goddess such as Lolth would be worshipped. Because Lolth, like most Gods, reflects the environment her worshippers live in, she is characterised as being as cruel, violent and chaotic as the underdark is. And the teachings of violence, sacrifice and betrayal that she encourages of her followers might not actually be such a bad thing but rather the key to the drows continued long term survival in such an impossible climate. Traditions and culture almost always stem from a purpose, in this case how you survive. The cutthroat nature of drow culture mirrors the underdark in such a way that it ensures that the strongest survive (although it's important to note when I say ‘strongest’ I don't mean it in a literal sense but rather those who possess the qualities best suited for survival in that environment.) The strict hierarchical structure also ensures this, with female drow being favoured as they are naturally larger, stronger and more robust than their male counterparts. Which in itself is most likely because larger stronger women generally lead to a higher rate of survival in offspring especially in harsher conditions where a single misstep can be certain death. This physical and social difference lends itself to the spider metaphor of their goddess both literally and figuratively where spiders eat their males. But as unfair as this rigid hierarchy based on sex seems, it can be argued like many cultural phenomena to be a curated survival method in itself. After all you need fewer males than females to maintain a stable population which is an important detail when living somewhere with a natural lack of food. Even sacrificing your first newborn son as gruesome of a tradition as it is, in a way makes sense. It selectively ensures that the male population is lower meaning less overall resource demand in an already scarce environment will be lower while still being able to maintain some semblance of genetic diversity.

Solutions to these dilemmas?: Now of course it goes without saying all these things are horrible, sex selection, strict hierarchies and encouraged violence to decrease competition are all bad. However in an extreme dystopian sounding scenario such as this one it does at the very least make sense. And I think what we can gather from this is that despite all the terrible things, at least terrible to us living in the world we are, drow aren’t really evil. Not even their society despite its depiction is ‘evil’. Calling them evil is kind of like if lions from a zoo who get fed everyday started calling wild lions evil for eating zebras. We may not like it of course but it's not fair to call it evil, it’s survival. In the same way Lolth isn’t even an ‘evil’ Goddess, she's just a cruel and unfair one, made to reflect the natural violence of the underdark and the lived experiences of those worshipping her. When debating the drows morality it's just about context. It brings some questions to mind. Like if the ‘good drow’ drow who are against Lolth did manage to rebel and forcefully shift the culture of the drow to be more like the surface elves for example what would really happen? Would the drow stop all their violent habits and competitiveness to live happily ever after in a more equal world? Or when all of this ‘evil’ behaviour was ‘corrected’ would it lead to a ripple effect causing famine and death anyway? Who are the surface dwellers to determine what’s wrong and right when they’ve never had to survive in such an environment? Perhaps instead the culture of the drow would just naturally change over time anyways if the need for those more violent and extreme traditions subsided because there were more ways of accessing resources and building a stabler environment. Either way I don’t know the future of drow society, but what I do know is that it’s far more complex and grey than we give it credit for.

Every now and again I have the overwhelming urge to archive Taka lore, and, honestly? Might do that before the end of the year.

Like, idk how many people know of the comics and stuff, but there's so much going on with this one character who canonically has no backstory. He's the ONLY ONE without a backstory and it INFURIATES MEEEEEEE

And ik I've said this before, but I'll say it again: TAKA'S ALSO THE ONLY CHARACTER IN THE ENTIRETY OF DANGANRONPA AS A FRANCHISE TO HAVE AN OFFICIAL MASTERMIND OUTFIT WITHOUT EVER BEING THE MASTERMIND!!!!

(At least to my knowledge. No other character has had a MM! outfit published in an official source directly tied to Spike that I've been able to find.)

so ive been writing another jayvik fic... after finishing my one shot of them & my timebomb piece, I felt so empty and like I NEEDED to start some sort of longish fic..chapter 1 is now finished at around 14.6k words ;-; <3 hoping to post it soon! (snippet below after I rant a bit)

after so many years of writing I feel like my style is consistently evolving and this piece is no different -- the only way I can describe my prose for this one is just freeing myself of any sort of inner ego and going balls to the wall, which is the greatest piece of self-advice I could give myself lmao.

this one is a divorce/separation au (with unreliable narrator viktor POV).. with plenty of the angst that I love writing. ive been writing it in past-tense because it is (quoting from interview with the vampire) "an odyssey of recollection"

SO here is a snippet, from near the beginning of chapter 1, their story starts in their earlier academic years:

Emerging from the lab one foggy morning, Viktor purchased a diet-soda from the vending machine, huffed down a menthol cigarette on the outskirts of slippery concrete steps before he hobbled his way into a seminar. A seminar which he was gravely late for, and had garnered such a low number of students that the circular, sloped auditorium echoed Viktor’s late announcement. The heavy wooden door slammed in his wake and he flinched with a wave of nausea as heads turned with scolding glares. Viktor only hoped to catch the door with his foot, and fumbled it tremendously. Heimerdinger had eagerly waved him toward the front, projector flickering with light, casting above the chalkboard, against the white brick wall around thirty-or-less feet tall, which illuminated and positively dwarfed the professor’s already short, stocky frame. 

Viktor bowed in what he hoped was a display of forgiveness, and sunk himself into the back row of stalled seats. He was in favour of not tripping down the elongated steps in the half-dark orifice of this godforsaken lecture hall, where Heimerdinger loved to monologue in, despite whatever turnout his extracurricular lectures garnered. The man continued on, nasally voice carried, echoed enigmatically off the cathedral-like vaulted dome ceilings, which were made up of rows of dark cherry wood that lead to a semi-stained oculus of yellowing green and blue mirrored florals — a complete mock-up of the humongous oculus in the main city’s cultural centre. 

An illusion of grandeur, as most of the university was materialized with dark wood, polished brass and rich mosaics, but they could never hope to get the scent of aged, musty paperbacks out of the dark carpeted halls, nor be free from the late-night terrifying scratches in the walls that were either mice, or old copper pipes that rattled and threatened to burst. Most resources had been budgeted or curated through wealthy investors, in all truth, it stunk of opulent riches and detestable high-roller academics who had nothing better to do with their time than remind everyone else they were made of freshly minted cash.

Jayce Talis rushed in not even a minute later, the clang of the doors had the few heads turning in annoyance once again — except for Viktor, who was more or less succumbed to an out of body experience, somewhere between deluded and day-dreaming. Rosy-cheeked and gap-toothed, gold chain caught between the half-raised collar of his starchy untucked shirt, worn beneath a wrinkled aviator bomber lined with black fur. Shiny brown-leather brogues squeaked across the laminate until Jayce Talis dropped into the seat right next to Viktor; the scent of strong espresso beans wafting off of him, hair half-mused with cowlicks abound. 

Similar to what Viktor might have imagined a demigod giant would look like at a kids’ tea party, the low-hung chair raised Jayce’s knees higher than his hips in a slope of tailored black trousers — or maybe Jayce had just been slanted, hunched against the creamy plastic, breathing ragged as he gave a half-hearted, boyish salute down to Heimerdinger. Or perhaps that was Viktor’s own breath, with the kind of high he imagines a marathon runner might get near the fifteen mile mark. It siphoned sour, lemony opioid peptides into the illogical receptors of his brain that wanted to curve and gnaw and twist gold through his fingers, no matter how malapropos. The projection clicked onward to a display of intricate arithmetic that was nothing short of experimental, and Viktor did his best to mock it up in his notebook.

Brief rant about baby clothes but like... I'm looking at onesies for The Bean, bearing in mind that they're mystery gender until birth, and I'm realizing that at least half (if not more) of the stuff I'm marking off for the registry is listed specifically "for boys."

Why? Because it isn't pink and isn't fucking coated in frills and bows.

This isn't for lack of trying, to be clear: I do at least LOOK through the stuff marked for girls, and like. It's literally all pink and covered in hearts and butterflies and flowers with frills on the shoulders and leg holes or puff sleeves or flat out built in tutus or with spaghetti straps and little silk bows. Why am I putting an infant in spaghetti straps? Why does this child need a skirt attached to their onesie that I'm going to just cover up with either pants or (shocker) a skirt that I picked out. Like IDK can I accessorize my child myself??? Am I allowed to do a little mix and match???? Ffs...

I'm just really annoyed about the fact that I can't find any cute woodsy looking stuff that isn't specifically marked for boys and also isn't pink bunnies and unicorns (not that I have anything against either but it's not my vibe, and if my kid wants to drown themselves in pink glitter and tulle when they're old enough to have an opinion then fuck yeah. But for now? No.)

Anyway, loving the whole "violently shoving the gender binary down everyone's throat from birth" thing. Real cool, capitalism.

Personality: To most, Ivanna's personality seems to be that of a kind and compassionate young girl. She is very polite towards those that she knows and holds dear, never showing even the slightest hint of malice... that is until someone triggers her temper. In truth, Ivanna is exactly like Felix in every possible way — from the sassy remarks to the fiery attitude, her desire to train and do things for herself — of which often causing her and Felix to bud heads.

Special Talents: Much like Felix, Ivanna excels in swordplay and can use the perks of the Crest of Fraldarius. She is both swift and strong when using a sword, but she also possesses the ability to use magic.

Who they like better: Sylvain. Without a doubt, Ivanna's favored parent is Sylvain. After all, he lets her get away with things much easier than her papa does, not to mention he spoils her rotten due to the fact he calls her his little princess (it also helps that she looks exactly like Felix).

Who they take after more: Felix. Ivanna is 100% the spitting image of Felix in both looks and in personality.

Personal Headcanon: Ivanna is the next in line for the role of Duke within Fraldarius territory, just like Ideya is the next in line to become the new Margrave within Gautier territory, but Ivanna knows that this means she will eventually have to be without her younger sister and this scares her because she knows Ideya needs her.

Name: Ideya Artemis Fraldarius-Gautier

Gender: Female

General Appearance: Much like Ivanna, Ideya looks exactly like her father (Sylvain) with the same matching red-orange hair and eyes. Her facial features are much rounder than her sister's and this is due to the fact she is much younger than Ivanna.

Personality: Ideya is a very shy and quiet girl who causes everyone to wonder where she got her personality from (many believe it to be Sylvain's mother). She has a tendency to follow her papa (Felix) around compared to her father (Sylvain) because she often finds his antics too loud for her liking (not in a bad way, she simply had sound sensitivity). Additionally, Ideya is often found hiding behind her older sister, Ivanna, whenever present at large social gatherings.

Special Talents: Much like Sylvain, Ideya is well-trained with a lance and can use the perks of the Crest of Gautier. Though despite being well-trained in the ways of the lance, she has a hard time swinging it without hitting the ground due to the fact she isn't tall enough to properly wield it yet.

Who they like better: Felix. Despite Felix's very aggressive personality, Ideya is extremely close to her papa because his personality completely changes when he's with her — becoming extremely soft-spoken and patient to the point most don't believe it.

Who they take after more: Truthfully, Ideya doesn't take after Sylvain nor Felix, but instead takes after Sylvain's mother, Syvette. This is due to the fact that when Ideya was born, Sylvain and Felix often had to leave her with Sylvain's mother, and this caused her to pick up on many of her grandmother's habits and personality traits.

Personal Headcanon: Due to how large Dimitri is compared to her, Ideya often hides within Dimitri's king robes (along with Ivanna) whenever Felix wants the two of them to prepare for social events, leading for Felix to grow frustrated to the point he makes Sylvain look for the girls with him. This has become a game of sorts in Ideya's mind.
