as someone whos been on army twitter since 2018, it only seems like armys dont support jikook's bond the way jikookers do is because shippers are in a sub-fandom and within that subfandom they are in an echo chamber. its nothing unusual it's in literally every fandom but thats the only reason lol. like taekookers are saying the exact same thing, that the fandom is full of jikookers and everyone dismisses taekooks bond. solos and shippers all have their own "evidence" and "proof" or armys "not defending ___", and 9.9/10 its something 1) armys have never seen or even heard about bc twitter and the internet is a biiiig space or 2) something taken completely out of context. i like to be in this tag bc ive been an ot7 biased army since 2019 with jikook being my fav duo, and while i dont care to know if theyre in a relationship with each other, its not something crazy either because friends to lovers is like the oldest trope ever and also theyd be cute as hell together lmao. i dont follow any solo focused accounts or pairing accounts, literally only armys and when are you sure came out my tl looked like this tag 😭. armys are well aware of jikook's bond and are supportive of it, the issue is taekookers. i could make a thread of vmin, namkook, sope are married and get 10k likes, but i couldnt do that bc of taekookers. theyd swarm the quotes and no thats not armys doing it or armys fault, thats the twitter algorithm being 100000000x worst after elon musty took over bc it was not like that at *all* pre-him. with likes being hidden and the algo pushing deplorable disgusting terrible tweets, it makes it infinitely harder to take accts down.

also its like the way straight armys and lgbtq+ armys experience being a fan. you notice subtexts and clues that may or may not actually be there or mean what you think/want it to mean but its still your fandom experience and youre able to talk about it with other like-minded people. perfect example for this: like crazy. the queer coded-ness of it all, the makeup & earing on one side, jimin in my eyes created the bisexual Iliad in song form ! but thats not how most het armys wouldve viewed it at all, and that doesnt even mean my interpretation of it is correct or the only way to view it. im not going to look down on those who viewed it differently. so shippers are experiencing something different; they watch their pairing to see how they look at each other, touch each other, speak to each other, treat each other compared to everyone else. armys simply arent doing all that; and that doesnt mean we dont care or that shippers love them more (lol), it just means that within the shipping culture and sub-fandom, thats what yall do. which is cool, but like i said its not the *only* way an army can love and appreciate their bond. there's also the echo chamber aspect of the subfandom culture i didnt really get into but it also plays a huge part in why jikookers think armys dismiss or dont love jikook in the same way jikookers do. all this isn't necessarily a slight against you but i think conversations like these are necessary bc talking points like "armys dont actually like seeing jikook together" or "majority of the fabdom is taekookers who hate jikook" are extreeeemely slippery slopes that discourage any type of meaningful thought, and only encourages and eggs on solo rhetoric, which as we hopefully all know is directly antithetical to what any of the boys would ever want.

It’s true that in every sub-fandom within the main fandom, whether it’s Taekookers, Jikookers, other shippers, or solos, everyone essentially complains about the same issues, each armed with their own “proof” to justify their arguments. That part, I fully agree with.

However, while I see your point, I do want to emphasize that Jikook’s bond is often undermined by many within the fandom. And it’s not just Taekookers or solos; even some OT7 fans contribute to this. The reasons for this vary. Yes, you’ll find other groups complaining about the same things we do, but when you dig deeper to understand their grievances, it often turns out to be something taken out of context or just bitterness over someone highlighting Jikook or saying something positive about their bond.

The truth is that Jikook’s bond stirs mixed feelings in this fandom for many reasons. It has never been the simplest relationship to understand…or even to love, if I’m being honest. Many people join fandoms and sub-fandoms as an escape from real life issues, seeking something that feels lighthearted, comforting, or entertaining in their spare time. Because of this, a lot of people dislike grappling with more complex dynamics like Jikook’s. They either reject it outright because they don’t understand it or ignore it altogether. This lack of understanding often leads to their bond being undermined.

Jikook’s dynamic has historically made many people uncomfortable for a variety of reasons that I won’t delve into here. But when we talk about this fandom ignoring or undermining their bond, there is more than enough evidence to support that claim.

In contrast, what’s complicated or complex about Taekook? Their dynamic is fun, easygoing, and comforting, qualities that are universally appealing. There’s no need to overthink their interactions or navigate any layers of complexity when watching them. Everything that has ever appeared complex about those two is largely a result of shippers fabricating explanations to reconcile their behavior with the expectations of a romantic dynamic. These narratives are often crafted to justify why they don’t exhibit the typical actions or interactions one might expect from a couple… I.e Taekook not seen spending much time with each other = the company separating them or regulating their interactions on camera. Most people in the fandom, except for some Jikookers and solos, have no reason not to enjoy their dynamic. An easy way to see this is by observing the response to their content. A Taekooker can make up lies, edit photos, or take moments out of context, and it will gain over 20k likes, with the fandom eagerly eating it up. Meanwhile, Jikookers can post real, authentic moments of Jikook, only to have their posts reported. So, no, for the most part, Taekookers don’t have a strong basis for their claims. (This isn’t the bone of contention but just had to mention this)

I also agree with you that many fans don’t pay attention to the same things shippers and solos focus on. Sometimes they’re simply unaware of certain dynamics, which can come across as indifference. I also don’t entirely agree with the narrative that ARMYs dislike seeing Jikook together. I’ve seen the fandom be supportive of Jikook as a duo but I still firmly believe Jikook is one of the pairs whose bond is most heavily undermined. A clear example of this is how much of the fandom dismisses Jikook’s interactions as mere fanservice, simply because some of their moments appear too “intimate” or “gay” for their liking.

This is definitely a topic that deserves more discussion because there’s so much to unpack here.

In fact, men might go to prison for resisting, just like with Vietnam.

Kaijucody said the draft will never be used again, so men shouldn't complain. Okay, so why do you care when men try to get rid of it?

Answer: because that shows sexism against men is a big deal. In a "Patriarchal" government that's supposed to be biased in men's favor.*

This male feminist (and mamaterf) said men created and enforced the draft, because women couldn't vote. Just one tiny issue; the Selective Service Act was  in 1917, and the 19th Amendment was in 1920.

First elected Congresswomen? 1930s. Women are major voting blocs. Women were their party nominees for President in two of the last three US elections, and one of them was the first female Veep. There'll probably be a lady Prez elected in my lifetime.

And then there's feminism itself.

Not to mention many women who watched the government force a man they love onto The Bus, and all that came home was a crisply folded flag.

Or just care because they don't want men to die because of sexism.

Feminism had a century and change to seriously oppose the draft, even if you accept "women = feminist" and pretend male feminists don't exist. As feminists often do. It's even a gender equality issue, just not one feminists like.

But feminists like mamaterf and kaijucody "erased women's voices" to protect their silly little sexist narrative.

PS: I completely forgot that mamaterf also said "yall can take it up with the 70% male congress and 2/3rds male supreme court". And the "male president".

So she tacitly admits women are a third of the people currently responsible, by her own standards. But somehow, Selective Service is still all men's fault. 

And male politicians caring about women's "bodily autonomy" (IE supporting abortion rights) is apparently a lower bar to clear than caring about men's own bodily autonomy, or even their own lives.

As if >politicians have never< >served themselves<, faced the draft, or have male relatives.

Heck, Biden's oldest son served in Iraq. Even got a Bronze Star. Biden was literally a senator at the time.

I was scrolling through your blog (the art is beautiful please dont ever stop) and i saw some anons complaining and insulting you for drawing some characters (mainly characters from natlan and sumeru) with different shades of skin.While i dont know much about this topic i just wanted to share my opinion.

Sumeru is based off of middle east,the majority of which has tanned skin (but its very mixed from what i know!).Natlan is based off of a lot of places (which is honestly another sign of racism in my opinion)I myself am from Turkey which can count as both middle east AND Europe (even turkish people dont know what we count as).I have a lot of middle eastern friends as well (Iran,Iraq,Sauda Arabia,Syria…) and they are brown or tanned and one of them is white!

i saw a lot of people say that “not every character needs to be black/brown” and i answer this with not every character has to be white.White,brown,black,asian,native american and every other race exists and every race deserves to be respected.No race should be insulted for wanting representation.No race should be seen as outcasts either.Wether that be white or black,no one deserves to feel like they are not fine the way they are.

I myself hc Zhongli as pale as a ghost to indicate that he is a god (as being pale is associated with being a superior being in chinese culture).I hc Xiao as tanned due to him spending all his time,day and night,fighting monsters.I hc Neuvilette has slightly blue-ish skin bc hes the hydro sovereign.I hc as black bc i like him that way.I hc Alhaitham as brown and so many more characters.Nobody would want to play a game in which there is no diversity.Diversity helpes the characters feel more real and gives them character depth.Diversity helps make Teyvat feel more real,like Earth itself.

And if I can be honest, I wasn't aware of this question of representation and diversity before Genshin Impact. Once, I saw a fanart with someone making a white character black, and in all of my ignorance, I was wondering why (a genuine question). So I asked my friend her thought (because I love hearing her opinions) and she makes me aware about representation in media, and issues they are facing to. And, wow, I learnt a lot ! Maybe it is a bit silly but, I always tend to focus on canon content, and all my HC was around interactions or their behaviour, and I never thought about their body appearance HC. And since I learnt that, my creativity developed a new skill ! So it is only recently I put HC on their physical appearance (like Sethos with dimples KKGEKDJS it ain't that much but it is fun, I guess HC on physical appearance is not my domain)

But it is thanks to Genshin, a game about exploring a whole world with diversity lore in each region, and what representation Hoyoverse used for making their game that I started to be into it. So yes, there is a lot of problem in genshin, making some rep worst. But without this, I wouldn't be able to learn more about SWANA culture with a thread I read on Dehya Nilou Tighnari Faruzan, Japan with Wanderer, Chinese with Yun Jin or recently on Hawai'i with Mualani and even on France United Kingdom with Emilie (i think I also read a thread about GaMing too...?). And what a surprise, I am close to France and UK but I never knew about Emilie's inspiration. Not only on character but also lore, and how some desert name in genshin is also part of culture (I don't remember where I read it tho !! Gosh i wish to reread it again).

I love genshin for its diversity whatever on region or lore but even on gameplay it offers us in our adventure. But I also agree on those who complain about character design ! Not only about representation, but about storytelling in character design (for example, you can't guess Xilonen is someone who forges ; her nails, accessories and hair would be on her way). Searching our lost sibling, tragic lore, wholesome encounter, satisfying gameplay, vivid color landscape, with great characters, ALBEDO ??? Not for me ?! 🤨 My love for genshin is immense. But, I agree on the fact that.. yes. Indeed, I am not the target for genshin character design. I played a lot of gacha game, and it is mostly based on collectioning waifu with big boobs and big ass (you were a great game, Epic Seven...). When I look at hater's account on twitter, there is a pattern : throwaway account, account full of problematic opinion, or full of porn 2d woman with the basic hourglasses morphology big boobs big butt even on characters who are flat. It is undeniable that most of genshin characters are sexualised, and this, for sell them better. And, making them white is one of criteria to sell them better to those type of client 🙂‍↕️

I study sociology (i am a newbie tho, nothing deep) and I can extend this light analyse on what I learn : the success of Genshin, why there is such a contrast between Genshin players and their different profiles, the benefits Hoyoverse do and how difficult it is to satisfy all players (and so sacrifices are made, like characters design). ynupdates I really don't know if I should write this... This photo is from YN's practice in Paris today. She broke down crying after multiple people from the audience kept calling her names, howling and disturbing. Those people were just a percentage of the ones that are actively judging her on the internet. And it is NOT okay. And it will never be. Some people should stay at home and keep shouting at their TV, leaving this lovely young woman to live HER life the way SHE wants to. She doesn't owe you anything. Harry half expected for you to completely ignore him the entire concert. He didn't mind, obviously. Taylor Swift was your favorite artist of all time and you were at the first night of the Eras Tour. Harry was there to enjoy a good concert, but he knew it was so much more for you.

But he was prepared. He had tissues in his pockets for when you cried, makeup wipes for when you returned to the car and eventually wanted to wipe all the glitter off your face, your comfiest pair of slippers waiting in the car, and one of his hoodies for you to slip into on the drive home.

Color him shocked when you held his hand almost the whole show. There were moments where you had too much excitement for your favorite songs, but a lot of the time you were tucked into Harry's side, singing along quietly with your eyes glued to the stage. Harry watched the show too, but he found himself watching you more. It was so cute to see you so lost in the moment, so enamored by music. Harry had seen something similar when he spotted you from onstage at his own shows, but this was different. You loved Harry's music, he knew that, but every track, every lyric, every melody that Taylor Swift had released was everything to you.

"Why didn't you wear the outfit from the music video?" Harry whispered in your ear when "You Belong With Me" came to a close. He was joking, but of course you had a serious answer.

"I'm saving it for another date. Thought I would be more dressed up for the first night." Looking over at him, you grinned before kissing his cheek. "Don't worry. I already have your outfit planned out."

Harry shook his head, exasperated but not at all surprised. "Can't wait."

During "Enchanted," you took Harry by surprise and turned to face him and rested your cheek on his chest. In your boots, you were tall enough to speak quietly in his ear despite all the noise.

"I loved this song when it first came out."

"You did?"

You nodded, one hand finding his and threading your fingers together. "I used to wonder if anyone could really feel that strongly for anyone. So...giddy and enchanted and completely and totally in love. It seemed so out of reach at the time, like an actual fairytale written as a song."

Harry bent his head down so he could look you in the eye. Yours were closed, enjoying the moment, the song being performed onstage. "Did you ever figure it out?"

"I met you." That was all you needed to say, really.

A smile spread across Harry's face as he rested his forehead against yours. His heart beat rapidly in his chest at her small confession. He knew exactly what you meant. Harry wasn't sure if you knew it, if you were even aware of it, but you'd changed his life completely. He'd been in love maybe once or twice before, but it was nothing compared to the feelings he had for you. It was...he supposed you were right, it really was something like magic.

"I love you," he said, his lips brushing against your skin as he spoke each word.

You kissed his cheek a couple times before pressing your lips to his. Harry was sure you were trying your best to make good on your promise and leave a mark, and he hoped it worked. The kiss didn't last long, seeing as you were both still aware enough of your surroundings that you knew better than to let things get too heated. But you smiled against his mouth and squeezed his hand appreciatively, happy to share one of the greatest nights of your life with the person you loved most in the world.

"I love you too," you said, then turned around, letting Harry's arm pull you close to his chest and keep you nice and snug there for the next couple songs.

ooh. hm. fuck. i think my first thought is always gonna be my longer-running threads with @chaoslulled — the one that stands out the most in my mind rn is the thread where satoru found seph on the brink of collapse after a hellhound kill. it was only the second thread we ever wrote together, and i ACUTELY remember how nervous i was that it was too intense and i was gonna scare hol away with it because that's happened so many times before. SJDHKSJHD

another one that comes to mind is one of my first threads with @tewwor's litho, which started with the simple inbox prompt "can't sleep?" and ended up turning into one of our longest threads to date and spiraling out into the longest fucking slowburn of this blog's career. i loved it. i'll never stop thinking about that apple.

im doing my Dark Urge playthrough and without spoiling anything specific, five minutes after crashing on the beach, you can click a dialogue option where you "fantasize" about killing a potential companion, only to then open your eyes and realize you weren't fantasizing at all. the choice explicitly says that you're just imagining it, there are no intervening saving throws, the cutscene is fairly gorey, and from what i can tell the companion is well and truly 100% dead on this save file. i thought that was a really cool way to show how dangerous it is to even fantasize about indulging the Dark Urge via gameplay

i then googled the name of an... item that appeared in my inventory after the cutscene to see if it was for a quest or something, only to find a reddit thread full of people complaining that they "only wanted to fantasize", aghast at the consequences of their actions, and unironically concluding that this somehow makes the ROLE-PLAYING game worse. my guy. you selected the "tortured by murderous urges" character and clicked on the "indulge murderous urge" button. you can be surprised at the immediacy and severity of the consequences, but getting mad at the game feels like missing the point entirely. "why didn't they show you the danger of even fantasizing about killing people on a less plot-relevant character first?" it's like reddit actively wants video games to be worse sometimes

"do you think people are so simple, so easily understood—while you yourself are above it all, the sole experiencer of complexity and contradiction?" tbh that's often an idea that i fight off, but when i complain about not being understood by other people, they try to stroke my ego saying that i'm just smarter and superior and it bothers me. i don't want to be smarter than everyone else, i learnt so much just so i could communicate better and now i don't even have that. i just don't know how to make it possible to be understood.

i was also told that i was smarter and better than other people and that they would never understand me and i hated that. like i want to be known, i want to communicate, i dont want to be an island. i think what helped me personally was giving up on the idea that there is going to be some perfect magical knowing that opens me surgically and instantly lays us bare to each other. and to treat even superficial, ordinary conversations as though they are real connections. the eye contact i make w a woman at work when i refuse to play along w a weird joke on her behalf is Also connection. and i think like, most people are not going to Know me. they arent going to see me deeply or find me interesting or be able to understand what im trying to say. but one thing is...im willing to iterate. im willing to say the same things over and over in different ways until a way of saying it clicks, or until it sinks in...ive waited years for my mom to understand what my brain is like and she still doesnt get it but ive come a long way since what was when i was a teenager. i repeat myself a lot, i repeat myself to a lot of people, i find old ways of saying things and new ones. and these...processes of trying to be understood by others should not be a diminishing or a culling of the self to only that which is intelligible to an audience, hopefully, but there is a method to finding...common ground. and the way to find common ground is to listen to people closely, to listen to what they say and how they say it, and to find those threads...im not saying i find it easy. but when you look at what youve experienced, your feelings...the range of human emotion is not infinite. we all know shame, listlessness, terror, lust, the loneliness of being on the outside of something, the hurt of not being heard. don't look for people to have felt things in the same way, shape, or intensity as you. look for ways to say, when you catch these notes, "i know what that feels like, even though it was different for me - i know what you mean." what does being understood mean to you? does it mean that you talk and someone Gets you? or does it mean that...you look for what is inside you in the world around like piecing together a puzzle? listening to others, not because you are their therapist or anything of the sort, but because in the story they tell you might find some trace of yourself? all human connection should be selfish because unselfish connection is worse, its charity. if you have friends, i hope you are their friend for your sake as much or more than their sake. and if you listen to people closely, i hope you do it because you're looking for that point from which you start building connection and understanding. and sometimes people have to be taught to understand you, but often they want to learn, if you have a way of teaching it. you must imagine people as eager too, and lonely, and in need of being seen. you must imagine that someone out there feels what you do and the only way to find them is to talk to people.

dragon age fans are so fucking funny, decided to dip my toes into reddit and I've been commenting on fanart, only positive stuff. for one piece I was the only one commenting, I made some harmless comment about how they picked nice colours and I liked the style. the artist then decided to downvote my comment and go absolutely insane in my messages because I'm apparently a "karma farming snake when I don't even like the game" because I commented in another thread about some of my issues with veilguard. I don't even know what the fuck karma is for nor do I care for it. so I decide, okay, this person doesn't want me interacting with their work so remove my comment and upvote and go on my merry way. then I see them on tumblr, same username and art, and are complaining about a lack of interaction with their art. I wonder if your attitude has something to do with that? anyway, I'm having a blast on reddit atm, most people are nice. but OF COURSE a dragon age fan is the one who is acting like this, lmao. some things never change do they?

Five Hargreeves x Fem!Reader

Summary: You are sitting in the academy with a nice book when five walks in obviously hurt, you help him get cleaned up and he confesses to you after thanking you for helping him

You were sitting in the living room of the academy, quietly reading a book when Five stumbled in, clutching his side. “Are you okay?” you asked, looking up at him with a concerned stare, squinting your eyes a little when he waved you off, hobbling over to you.

“I’m fine, what were you reading?” he asked. You knew there was something wrong, but you told yourself to leave it. If Five didn’t want you to know, then you weren’t going to pry, if he needed help he would come to you, you thought.

You looked at him wearily but answered his question none the less. “oh! its just this book ben was talking to me about, he said I would like it and let me borrow it! How nice is that?” you smile, holding out the book to Five.

Five took the book out of your hands, taking a look at both covers and flicking through the first few pages, nodding along to what you were saying. “Hm, that is nice of him.”, he said, thinking to himself and wincing as he sat down on the sofa opposite you clutching his side.

“Okay, are you hurt or something? I can tell there’s something wrong!”

“I’ll live, it’s fine.” he grunted, but you could see the pain etched on his face. You got up off the sofa and moved to his before you gently lifted up his shirt to see what was wrong. A nasty cut ran across his side, and you could tell it was deep. “I need to stitch this up,” you said, looking at it while softly running your fingers across his skin, getting a hiss from Five. “Sorry! Sorry, one sec’ I’ll get the first aid kit.” you said, standing up and walking into the kitchen to get the kit from under the sink.

When you get back to the sitting room, you find five with his head back against the sofa, clearly in pain. You wished he would tell you when he was hurt, but you knew he never would. It would hurt his ego. “you ready? This might hurt a little.” you, told him, with the reply of a nod yes.

You set to work, carefully cleaning and sterilizing the wound before threading a needle. Five hissed in pain as you started to stitch, but he didn’t complain. You worked quickly and efficiently, making sure to close the wound tight. “There,” you said, tying off the last knot. “All done.”

“Thanks,” Five said, breathing a little easier now that the wound was closed. “I don’t know what I would have done without you.”

You smiled at him, feeling a little warmth in your chest. Despite his gruff exterior, Five had a vulnerable side that only a select few were allowed to see. You were grateful to be one of those people. “Anytime,” you said, packing up the first aid kit. “Just don’t make a habit of getting hurt, okay?”

Five chuckled, wincing a little at the pain. “I’ll try not to,” he said, leaning back on the couch. “But you know how it is.”

You nodded, knowing all too well the dangers of their world. You had stopped the apocalypse three times now, and you were relieved to have a bit of a break for a while. But with each passing day, you were glad to have the Hargreeves by your side. And you were especially grateful for Five. He could be a dick sometimes, but he would always look out for you and his family.

“So, what happened? Not another apocalypse, I hope.” You joked before shaking your head and muttering “sorry, that wasn’t funny.” Five looked over at you as you packed away the first aid equipment. “I ran into a few men from the commission. Guess they had a sort of problem with me. Anyway, one of them had a knife i didn’t know about and cut me. I got them back for it though.” Five stated, sounding pretty proud of himself despite getting hurt in the process.

“Just..be carful, okay? I don’t know what I- we would do if something happened to you” you told him quickly correcting yourself hoping he wasn’t listening and didn’t catch it but oh of course he did, he always listened when you talked, it was like your the only person in the world and he just had to listen to you.

“i will.” he said. He seemed to be thinking of something before he finally spoke up. “I really care about you, you know. More than most people and I know it’s not just because of how much we’ve been through together, though that does help.” Five nodded along with himself almost like he was agreeing to what he was saying.

You look up at him, feeling yourself freeze as his eyes meet yours, feeling your heart start to race. Was he really saying what you think he was saying? What you had been wanting him to say for years now?

He took a deep breath, his hand reaching out to touch yours. “Well, what I’m trying to say is that I love you. That I’ve loved you for a long time, ever since we got partnered up together in the commission, but I was too afraid to tell you. And I don’t want to keep it a secret anymore.”

You didn’t know what to say. You had always suspected that there was something more between you two, but to hear him say it out loud was almost too much to handle. “I love you too, Five,” you said, the words tumbling out of your mouth before you could stop them.

He smiled, a genuine smile that lit up his face. “Good,” he said, leaning in to kiss you. It was a soft, gentle kiss, full of all the love and tenderness that had been building between you two for so long.

As you broke apart, you knew that this was just the beginning. There would be more missions, more battles to fight, but you were ready for them all as long as you had Five by your side. Together, you were unstoppable. You always had been.

Because I’ve got my finger right on the pulse, I’m gonna make a meandering post about a long-cancelled period drama rather than the major one currently airing. But this has been in the drafts for ages, and yeah I just really didnt like the depiction of Kett’s rebellion in Becoming Elizabeth. And I need to complain about it lol. I wish i could say it was a good effort but im not sure i can even give it that...

Firstly, and perhaps one of the most important things, is they have the rebels in the show rally around the cry, ‘kill all gentlemen!’ This wasn't a phrase used by the rebels at the Mousehold camp - it's been attributed to the revolts in the West, but i'd agree with recent research that it doesn't seem to actually have been said by anyone. The sentiment in of itself - the tearing down of the elite class - isn't something expressed in the articles the rebels produced, even if there were underlying tensions between the two groups. You do see it appear in individual testimonies sometimes, like here:

'the pore peple are now Famysshed but C of us wyll rise one daye agenst them & I wylbe one day he'.

I'm also not saying they were nice to the gentlemen they captured, or that they didn't want to confront these landed elites, because they did. But the rebels weren't, as shown in BE, slitting the throats of random nobles they came across. That kind of indiscriminate, murderous loathing isn't something i've seen represented in the sources describing their actions. There were few murders at all committed by the rebels - the battles against crown forces excluded - and fewer still can be confirmed to have been gentry. (although i should point out, whilst I'm focusing on Norwich because the show did, iirc there were killings of elites, and more talk in that sort of vein, in yorkshire). In the south, their violence seems largely to have been aimed at property, and chosen enclosures/deer parks and houses/household goods. that was the consistent thread running through their physical responses. For example:

'So some of the common people rose in Kent, Surrey, and Sussex under a captain they called Common-wealth and made havoc on the wild beasts in many of the parks in these parts.  But they paid for their food in every place'.

or,

'they have pluckyd downe Sir Wyllyam Harberde’s parke that ys abowte hys newe howse, and dyverse other parkysse and commonse that be inclosyd in that cuntre, but harme thay doo too parson (nobody).... They saye thay wylle obaye the Kynges maiste and my lord Protector with alle the counselle, but thay saye thaye wyll nat have ther commonse and ther growendes to be inclosyd and soo taken from them.'

and from Holinshed,

'ditches and hedges, wherewith the commons abrode in the countrie were inclosed, were throwne downe'

Their violence was a response to land, economic, religious, as well as highly local factors. To my understanding, it didn't represent a desire to either kill or eradicate gentlemen as a social group. The Norwich articles do suggest aims to minimise their interference in the community, and it did represent a radical restructuring of local rights and spheres of influence - at least, as i understand it.

Again, all this isn't to say there wasn't force, that there wasn't any brutality, or that there wasn't bitterness or resentment directed at elites. To take another example from Holinshed, he describes this killing of an Italian mercenary at Mousehold:

‘but they [Dudley's forces] left one of their companie behind them, a gentleman that was an Italian, who… through euill hap being outherthrowne beside his horsse, he was inuironed about with a great multitude if those rebels, that tooke him prisoner, and like vile wretches spoiling him of his armor and apparell, hanged him ouer the wals of mount Surrie. Which act shewed what courtesie might be looked for at such cruell traitors hands… it seemed that their beastlie crueltie had bereft them the rememberance of all honest consideration and dutifull humanitie’.

Having said that, the way the show presents the rebels' violence seems to me to be unrepresentative. BE depicts an overly simplistic picture of the commons indiscriminately murdering nobles w/o compunction or for any particularly complex reasons. Just, showing these people yanking a random man and woman off their horses to slit their throats and then leaving them to die... it really fucked me off. That is not at all accurate to events or the commons' behaviour during Kett's rebellion. At least, not in any sources that i've read. I mean funnily enough people werent too keen on getting hanged, which goes a long way to explaining why they skewed away from interpersonal violence.

The show also understates the sheer scale of the death toll imo. Not only were significant numbers killed at Dussindale, but a large number were executed after the fact. There was also battles near Exeter, and a great many Cornish were killed - I've come across the number as potentially as many as 2 000 before.

'The knight, hearing of this came with 200 men in harness who by his order attacked the commons and slaughtered them like wolves among sheep'

'During this time the Lord Privy Seal saw his opportunity to attack the besiegers [at exeter] before the Cornishmen arrived and killed more than 5,000. ....Then [at Norwich] the captain and many honest men were hanged, many of them without deserving it for any harm they had done, and some who had not even raised a stick to go to the field'

i don't think the figures have to be understood as being 100% accurate to nevertheless impart the sense of scale.

BE sort of glosses over this, even if it shows a handful of rebel leaders being hanged. Local communities such as Norwich, Yarmouth and others involved would have been greatly effected in terms of the proportion of their population who were now dead.

And the number of people hanged, drawn, and quartered at the market cross in norwich.. it was 30 or so i think? i can't imagine watching all those people be brutally killed on the same spot in one day. There were churchmen hanged from their steeples in various towns (oh how funnily ironic of you!) - this also extended to William, Robert Kett's brother,

'likewise hanged on the toppe of Windham [Wymondham] Steeple'

And, ofc, people's hung, drawn and quartered body parts were placed on the town/city gates. There were hangings in many local areas wherever support for the rebellion had existed.

Rebels were also hanged actually from the oak of reformation, which I’d argue is a fairly pointed inversion and disregard for such a key symbol of the revolt. It strikes me as particularly cruel and dismissive. as in, everything they tried to convey about themselves was shown to be utterly pointless and irrelevant.

memories of all this lasted, as you can imagine, for decades afterwards, like in 1596:

'the people that there [oxfordshire] did Rise were persuaded to goe home, and were after hanged like dogges'

This deficit in the show is seemingly symptomatic of the general under-representation of the sheer scale of what was happening. the number of amassed people shown is miniscule compared not only to the numbers at Mousehold but also those across the south - as well as some disturbances in the north. I feel like this couldve been mentioned in the dialogue since showing all that wouldve been very difficult, as the scale was most likely a budget thing. But showing merely the killing of Kett and a handful of others does the whole sequence of events a terrible disservice.

It also glosses over the extent to which this was a factor in Somerset's fall, and it was a big factor. The nobility felt he was prioritising the commons over their own interest. Paulet wrote in a pretty exasperated way about Somerset’s policies, and ofc Warwick grew increasingly impatient with him. The common people actually rose in decent numbers when he asked them, but Seymour turned them away in the end. I think he likely realised it was a bridge too far. Edward was actually allowed to survive for a short time after the risings, but not by much.

Anyway, overall i felt the show was far too harsh towards the rebels and presented them as very one-dimensional. And on the flip-side if anything it was too kind towards the nobility in its depictions of their response, considering they showed only a few hangings and not the overwhelming scale of death and brutality that followed. It’s been a while since I’ve watched the show, but did they mention the battle at mousehold, even? If not I think that’s diabolical

(As an aside to that last point, I do find John Dudley interesting. And I mention that because I want to be clear, I’m not saying you can’t like these people, or find them fascinating or compelling or moving. But when ‘these people’ are Tudor ministers you have to be prepared that they will have done some terrible things. Whether that behaviour is the ‘norm’ then or not, it still makes for difficult, upsetting reading. And I’m saying this as someone who does find the characters of these v competent/influential ministers really fascinating - like Wolsey, Cromwell, Cranmer, Dudley, Cecil etc. I mean, Cecil in the wake of the northern revolt? Reading those documents makes me feel a bit sick actually. It’s chilling. But anyway, anyone in the court can come under this umbrella to varying extents, but the drivers/orchestrators of policy are obviously - next to the monarchs - at the heart of any brutality…)
