OKAY!! MAJOR UPDATE TO THE CONFESSIONALS CONCEPT !!

So, after quite a lot of feedback i have decided on a couple things:

1. I will change the name. I think calling it confessionals puts the focus on the wrong thing, and definitely sounds more serious than I meant it to. I’m floating message board at the moment!

2. While i am still okay with people sending asks about serious topics they will NO LONGER be included under this concept. They will NOT be put under whatever tag i decide for this, they will ONLY be put under [ #serious post ]

Mainly, i want to emphasise that the thesis of this project is not to platform discourse, its to interact with anons and allow those who for whatever reason don’t have a space to interact with the community to have some fun with us!

Even when someone has their anons on, even when they say they’re okay with getting anons- i know it’s still a bit scary to actually send them. So i want to send out an explicit invitation for them and create a space that is specifically for them on my blog!

months ago i made a post saying i think it'd be fun if there was a tennisblr confessions blog and i have once again been thinking about this so. how do we feel about a mouse man national confessional where u guys send me anons with ur salacious opinions, thoughts, discourses and i reply, and others can chime in on the post too?

im thinking both sillyposts and serious posts (i'd tag them so u could block serious posts of course). even hornyposts although i must admit i will not have much to offer in that regard </3

this would be an open invitation, so u could send them any time, although i'd ask u to include that it's a confessional ask just so regular anons dont get mixed up!

in my experience confessional blogs usually descent into crazy discourse and drama so i would advise thinking about it in advance, and setting some rules about what you do or don't post. and maybe having it as a separate blog you can nuke, if need be, is a good idea. sorry for the unsolicited advice, you can ignore it if you want

this is definitely something I’ve thought about (and have seen happen) but im kind of hoping that because im not making a separate blog and that specifically when people send anons in they would know they r sending them to me that that would somewhat curb the more unsavoury confessions.

But i will say, im also entirely prepared to just not post ones i dont want to. I think the community is niche enough that I would never be getting flooded with confessions, and i feel equipped to sort through them and decide which ones I feel r appropriate to post. Because im not making a separate blog i think anyone who sends me a confession must implicitly agree that i just might not post it and thats just how it is (unless tumblr eats the ask, as it sometimes does).

I think generally the focus would be more on fun/silly/lighthearted confessions, but as i said in the original post I would also be interested in serious ones. Although serious doesn’t necessarily mean negative. I want to create a space for more considered/academic/informed discussions (think topics like the wta/atp merger, the political landscape of tennis, the reasons people boycotted the six kings slam etc etc), not like “oh i hate this player for no reason” type stuff.

I feel like people complaining about drama on tennisblr are the ones perpetuating the drama. like, the only reason there’s drama at all is people bringing stuff over from twitter and reddit imo, there’s been so many screenshots from there. eh i definitely see where people r coming from, its not a totally unusual story for confessional blogs to spiral into discourse over time, but i will say usually thats for much larger fandoms. i will also once again say that some of the knee-jerk reactions r probably due to me pitching it as a confessional blog style operation, when im aiming for something a lot more lighthearted and just like.. banter u know? I’m a serial lurker so i like the idea of opening the floor up for anons, and i do think most of them will play nice!! is it probably not at serious as some of the previous anons have made it sound? maybe, but I do appreciate the concern for me and the community. I too want to keep this place mostly nice to be in!!!!!!!

I will note that I don’t necessarily think it’s useful to blame the drama on tumblr on stuff migrating from other sites. Sure, there’s an amount of culture shock when people first join tumblr and so might not know the customs (like appropriate tagging), but things like screenshots of other socmed is just a natural part of all socmed at this point. The threads might have begun somewhere else but once they’re posted here they’re part of tumblr baybee. I don’t think it’s really necessary to single out tumblr as this supposed safe haven from the horrors of twitter or reddit fandom bc like it’s not lol there’s plenty of discourse here it’s just easier to avoid it!!! filter the shit out of ur dashes besties!!!! Curate ur experience!!!! Learn that searching shows u all posts that contain that phrase in the body of the post OR the tags, u have to go to the tags tab specifically if u only want to see post tagged with what u searched!!! This is is a total tangent but I have seen so many people complaining about anti posts showing up in main tags but bestie that’s why u gotta filter it!!!

tbh i don’t think there shouldn’t be MUCH care given into fairness in polls and more. ofc it’d be good if it were but also, it’s a tumblr poll at the end of the day, so don’t worry too much about it! (if you are lol) i wouldn’t say people are overreacting but i do think they have the wrong idea of what the confessionals are going to be like, so maybe use a diff name? because confessionals Does sound Serious. maybe a name similar to your personalized tags instead? either way, i like the idea! :)

Ofc youre free to do whatever you want but I think a confessional is a bad idea. Youll get hate and harassment from fans if you post asks criticising their favourite players, whether real or perceived. The concept of anonymity makes people very nasty

this seems to be the main reason against committing to this idea and while I certainly understand that angle i do also think it’s generally manageable (for me).

Maybe pitching it as a confession-blog-type isn’t quite the right idea since i think im just 100% not going to entertain any sort of “hate” anons. So nothing that’s empty statements against a player (ie. i hate x, i think x is ugly, i think x is a bad player).

The type of negative anons I would allow is something lighthearted (ie. i think x’s kit is ugly, x is in their flop era /j), constructive (ie. x is bad at drop shots, x needs to work on their serve), or serious discussions (ie. x said something problematic here’s a source for it, discussions about wada/doping).

All this to say though is that in my mind the majority of these confessions will be fun! I really like the idea of allowing lurkers to interact with the community and essentially make the posts they don’t have a blog to put on! tell me about that interesting interview answer they gave, or about which tournaments u like best, or which player could rock the bald look most confidently!

also, as a sidenote i am truly so fucking good at forgetting things like i could get a nasty anon look at it for a minute, delete it, and then never think about it again. If someone came into my inbox and was like alex de minaur is a skank bitch who sucks and also u suck for liking him id be like okay bestie #blocked

also also. If it truly gets bad I’ll just take it out of my pinned (i intend to add it to my pinned if I commit to this) and maybe turn off anon for a bit until people forget.

Hey, mouse man! I love the idea of the confessional booth. I'm old on tumblr, but I'm quite new on tennisblr and I'm a bit shy to interact with the fandom (besides reblogs and likes lol), so this idea honestly sounds very nice! You have a supporter here✊

I am not a fan of these confession things to be honest and I'll probably unfollow you if you start it. It's nothing against you or the discourse that will come out of it per se — if it's your thing and you find joy in it, go for it! It's nice to talk to others and hear their opinions. It's also important to discuss heavier and more serious topics and rethink your own stance on it. I, for myself, just don't want to have many negative stuff or heavy discourse on my dash. I just don't want it. I want tumblr to be my little happy place where I curate my own fandom experience without any trouble and without any hate going around. I've been trying very hard to not engage in anything that makes me unhappy when it comes to Tumblr. This is why I am happily blacklisting and blocking everything I don't want to interact with. I love your blog, enjoy your shenanigans and posts, but I'm just very tired of negative discussions and blowing up topics that probably shouldn't even be that big. Maybe if you could create a tag and use it for all the discourse so I could avoid it would be a solution for everyone who doesn't want to participate and at the same time doesn't want to unfollow you. Have fun with your idea, I hope you'll enjoy it — and I mean that by no means in a sarcastic way. I really hope it'll be fun for you and the exchange you wanna have with the fandom! I think a lot of focus is being put on the potential negative/serious “confessionals” when that was always supposed to be a sidebar to the main fun ones. I’m going to make a new post floating some changes i could make to really emphasise this.

also, I try very hard to tag appropriately so that people can navigate my blog how they want. I don’t have a tag for posts like the anons about this that aren’t necessarily serious but are somewhat tonally negative but i could definitely create one. maybe even just [ #/neg ] ?

i think if you want to add a poll to confessions asks, and want that vote to be as unbiased as possible, it would be better to have it on a separate blog. i saw your reasoning for why you don't want that and i kind of get it, but i think if it stays on your blog it will skew polls, people who follow you (or lurk your blog) probably have similar fave players and will vote accordingly

this is an interesting point hmm i think i probably would only include polls for the silly/light-hearted ones so that ultimately it wouldn't matter if it's a bit skewed. It's definitely kind of inevitable that if I keep it all on my blog it'll be biased to people who share my opinions but since I want to do this to interact with others I'd still prefer to keep it on my blog

My reasons for voting against it: My feeling is that tennisblr is already more divided than ever and giving people a platform to publish “controversial” takes they aren’t willing to put their name on, is the last thing this place needs. I know you believe you can moderate it, but people will likely still veil their attacks on the players they don’t like and that can be hard to see through. And/or controversial takes will start discourses that could quickly spiral into something worse. I know a lot of people have migrated here from other platforms precisely because they wanted to get away from that type of stuff.

maybe im missing it but I hadn't found tennisblr any more or less divided than before, granted I've only been here this year.

From my perspective we all already made jokes and sillyposts that can sound mean to outsiders so I don't really think it'd be that different if it was anon or not. It's true maybe I'd miss one that wasn't meant in jest but that's kind of true for any post. I get that bc it's anon there's no one to have take accountability, but there's a point where we're all somewhat anonymous anyway. Any one of us at any point could say something crazy then deactivate and just make a new blog. Or make a burner. If someone really wanted to say something heinous they could whether I provide this platform or not.

I will say, I know many people come to tumblr to get away from discourse in their fandoms that permeates other platforms but its not like discourse doesn't exist on tumblr, and I don't think it's necessarily fair to expect me to not open my blog up for more serious discussions if I want. Again, I will clarify that when I say discourse, the discussions I would allow would be informed, calm, and most importantly sourced- im not interested in petty gossip. There is a place on this platform for serious discussions and I am prepared to moderate my posts so it doesn't start to spiral. Maybe I'll only post them once a month or something like that too so the mood isn't always being dragged down.

When I make serious posts I am generally open to discussion, especially since I know i have blindspots. It's me wanting to start a conversation. The invitation for serious confessionals it's just me asking if anyone else wants to start that conversation first.

This blog is my only (public) interaction with the tennis fandom, I am not on twitter or reddit at all, i don't particularly interact with tennis fan content on instagram. This is the only place I talk about tennis with other tennis fans. Sometimes that includes serious discussions. I've made a couple serious posts, so it's not like it's totally out of character for this blog, and i do try to be as diligent as possible so people who do not want to see that content do not have to. I always employ read mores and tags for blocklists and my blog tag for serious posts. The same would go for these confessional posts.

Look, I'm not trying to fuck with the ecosystem of tennisblr. I recognise that I have pretty good interaction here and a decent number of followers, so my posts would generally end up on many people's dashes. I know that my posts don't exist in a vacuum. But there's also a point where it's still my blog and any of u who follow me or follow enough of my mutuals to see my posts regularly have to take ur tumblr experience into ur own hands.

This would only be one small section of the posts I make, I'm still gonna be posting 99.9% fun, regular posts. I'm hoping most of the confessionals would also be 99.9% fun, light-hearted posts. If u like those sorts of posts I'd hope Ur experience of my blog would stay mostly the same. If u do not want to see the serious posts u can filter [ #serious posts ] if u do not want to see any confessionals u can filter [ #mouse man national confession booth ] if this is a total deal breaker for u u can block me entirely, I won't take offence.
