my notes:

my overall interpretation of this song is "I'm trying to break through the friend zone (friendship barrier) so that you like me instead of thinking of me as a friend", so any vagueness in translation went in that direction

The use of "lock horns" in the official translation snippet + the HAO motifs give me the mental image of like, a hand-to-hand kung fu battle, so I leaned towards that imagery whenever there was vagueness (as opposed to like, a military campaign, for example)

Tangentially related to some of the discussion i posted earlier but quiet literally the first RW Art Month i participated I did it completely on whim like, one day before it started. And I mostly did it because I hadn't drawn a ton of rain world and wanted to draw more. Fandom presence was a lot smaller than and I was one of a handful of artists who did the entire thing. Fast forward and I still do Art Month and I've gotten to work with VC directly. But it was quite literally something I decided to do completely on whim that set the ball rolling, and for something a lil more niche and certainly with a lot more dev/fandom art involvement than most. Concise character summary attempt LOL:

Mikoto introduces himself as just a normal guy. He has a normal job, and hasn’t killed anybody of course :3 (Oh and also he has lots of memory problems and it turns out the job is entirely overworking and abusing him and this doesn’t mean anything at all 👍) 

It’s pretty quickly revealed that he has DID, and under the intense stress, an alter killed to protect him (Technically that’s under debate but I think it’s a solid theory.) This new identity remains pretty mysterious during this first part – he appears only briefly, and is under so much stress trying to protect himself again that we get very little dialogue from him. The fans had a lot of fun picking up on his distinguishing details: red symbolism, clothes/accessories/expression differences, and using the personal pronoun ore rather than Mikoto’s boku. Mikoto has sworn off smoking, but this alter is seen with cigarettes. Mikoto enjoys practicing his baseball swing to blow off steam, while the other uses the bat for… other purposes…

It wasn’t until the second trial that we got some more info and personality from him. He’s everything Mikoto isn’t: he won’t people please and put on fake smiles and try to laugh himself out of pain. He’ll stand up for himself (with force if need be) and speak openly. Since Mikoto is unaware, and frankly in a lot of denial, about being a system, this alter was never given a proper name. As a play on John Doe, the child warden decides to name him John, and I always have to laugh asdfsdf

I’m not as unwell about him as some other characters, but I must say I was really compelled when his second song came out – I’m always a sucker for “good intentions gone wrong,” and the fact that his attempt at protecting someone he loved ended up dooming both him and said loved one to immense suffering and possibly death really got me good…

Adding the two songs if you wanted to peek! He’s got an overall metal theme, but the genre switches a bit to reflect each of their personality really expertly, in my opinion :3
