Still fascinated that the m9 TV shows current official description talks about the beacons + the way they keep bringing up how excited they are to show offscreen political stuff when they're still working on s1. Is the plan to show the assembly (and possibly the dynasty) having political discussions seasons before the nein know or care?? Ik people have been talking about this for essek reasons but im much more interested in the narrative implications of that choice. Early c2 would have a much different feel to it! I'm not sure I'm fully on board with it but it's a very bold choice and I'm really curious how things will work out if they do go down that path

Nico stared down at his hands. The iron cuffs were still on his wrists. They’d broken the binding link but not the cuffs just yet, somehow no lockpicks in any of their packs. When Nico caught sight of them, Leo’s wrists were looking worse by the hour, his cloak still in place even with them right along the fire. 

Nico didn’t know what happened next. He had everything down to a T, every step outlined in his head like one of Leo’s list, concise points to check off. And now he had nothing. No gear, no horse, not a coin to his name. Everything felt like it was crumbling around him.

“Travis,” one of the women called as she approached, Nico’s gaze snapped to hers automatically. It was the same woman who’d pulled him out of the lake, now tossing over a waterskin. “Here.” 

Nico took it just to hold, watching as she sat across from him on the other side of the fire, no reason for it at all. She looked to Leo, his head pillowed on his arms, then back to Nico, sitting between him and the world. 

“On watch?” Bianca asked, an amused curve to her voice. “Me too.” 

Nico glanced at the front of the camp. There was a woman perched scanning their surroundings, different than the one who’d been there earlier. 

“Phoebe’s watching the perimeter,” she allowed. “I have a different assignment.” 

Bianca was sitting facing them head-on. Nico made sure she could see his eyeroll, not choosing to comment on that even a little bit. 

In his silence, Bianca continued. “Zoë said a group can go out tomorrow morning to walk you guys back through Sherwood.” 

Zoë, the leader. Nico gave her a brisk shake of his head. “We don’t need an escort.” 

Bianca cast a look over him, so unimpressed he was insulted. “Sure. Anyway, we’re leaving at dawn.” 

This was getting worse with every second. “We?” 

“We,” Bianca agreed. “And we’re not making any bathroom breaks. Be ready, we don’t wait around.” 

Nico was hardly in a position to fight about it. From every other gaze catching on them sitting at the fire, they’d only literally cut their chains, nothing more or less. But he never went easy. “We’ll be fine. I know Sherwood.”

“Zoë insists,” Bianca informed him, pleasant. “So, dawn?” 

Nico didn’t waste another eyeroll on her but felt one deep in his soul. 

The Huntresses wanted to see them clear of their area. Probably take the convoluted way out and get them mixed up before throwing them on a path far, far away from their base camp. It was somewhat cynical of them. Nico wholeheartedly approved. 

“Whatever,” Nico said. “I’ll let Connor know when he wakes.” 

Bianca gave him an approving nod. She’d changed into dry clothing since this morning, now in a simple tunic and lace-up vest, pads on her elbows and knees. It was predictable gear for traveling rough but a step above what Nico usually saw. Sitting at her side, she had a helmet with polished horns on the sides and hooked teeth at the cowl. The others had similar accessories, bleached bones strung through their armor and along their necklines. On Bianca’s feet, she had a pair of thick boots made of shining green scales, iridescent. Huntresses, they’d introduced themselves as. 

“You’re monster hunters,” Nico said, a realization. 

She flashed him a smile. She’d pulled out a knife and a thick stick, shaving the end off. “The Queen may have burned most of the magic out of this place, but not all the creatures. Someone’s gotta take care of them.”

So they did. Nico felt an unwilling bloom of respect. “You guys good at it?” 

She seemed satisfied to just answer the question. “The best.”
