Peru’s National Prosecutor’s Office, which is now investigating the ‘alien attacks,’ has pointed the finger at these gold ‘mafias,’ who have been partially ejected from Brazil and Colombia by their militaries.
Now in Peru, these jetpack-flying gold cartels hope to inspire fear with their bizarre campaign of ‘alien’ terror, according to prosecutors, keeping the locals in their homes and away from the cartels’ illegal gold pits.

in recon by fire when laswell gets abducted, did shepherd tip off al-qatala that she'd be there? bc wasn't it a cartel outpost? why was al-qatala there? i know they were working together but why is it al-qatala specifically that takes her instead of it being a group effort?
it would be a huge benefit to have laswell, and by extension price and gaz, out of the picture while he scrambles to fix his mess since she is pretty much his biggest obstacle (and knows it which is why he’s so quick to not let her near the missiles)
the way he tries to drag out her rescue - "we can't just send in the cavalry, these things take planning and preparation" - only to agree to send price and gaz by themselves, presumably thinking it would just be them (since he doesn’t seem to believe in allies or trust) and they'd either take a long time and be preoccupied or fail to get her back altogether and die in the process
it takes these huge pieces off the board; other than the missiles themselves his only obstacle is ghost and soap and his next step is to take them out. the way he doesn't hesitate to put them under a kill order makes you think he expected the other half of the 141 to also be dead

In 1757 the [East India Company] took part in the Battle of Plassey and gained control of Bengal. At first this led to the simple looting of the province, as the EIC extracted “gifts” and “tribute” from local elites. But as the Industrial Revolution got underway, English capitalists developed their textile industry. So, the EIC systematically destroyed the Indian cotton economy, drove farmers out of cotton production, and shut down spinning and weaving operations. British industry bought cotton grown on slave plantations in the southern United States. As India was eliminated as a competitor, the mills of the English Midlands flourished.

One thing I adore about PB is Tommy's approach towards modernity. Straddling the non-industrial past and the industrial/modern present; constantly positioning himself on the cutting edge, if not quite bleeding edge, of period/era technology. Cars, manufacturing, shipping, phones, typewriters. Medicine, psychology, and even bringing in incredibly modern concepts into politics in that era. He is constantly grabbing at the future. It's this striking characteristic in him, all the way from S1 when they install the phone in the Garrison - ~if only we knew someone else with a phone, we could call them~ - through to S6's final episode when he even wangles a seat on an airplane to get to Canada without wasting time. So uncommon at the time, but he just went: I need to get there with least time lost, and matched requirement to a borderline experimental non-consumer-available insider technology to do so.
(Sidestep: Such an interesting juxtaposition of all that, with the constant representation of the pre-industrial-era Romani threads in S6, too: Esme, the hills, the horse, the curse, the mythology, the vardo, all that slamming up against an actual cutting edge submachinegun, so ‘contemporary’ it’s actually anachronistic by a few years (if my research was right, it’s a WWII weapon that submachinegun, not to get on the symbolism, but). Arguably, Ruby in hospital having the most contemporary medical treatment available while Tommy goes walkabout to lift a curse is another notable juxtaposition.
There’s also an interesting slant of his modernity balanced against what I call his hoarding habit — the most cutting edge piece of tech or modernity in 1923 he’s still hanging onto in 1933. But yeah, even with that the juxtapositions are interesting because they can only happen if the forward reaching/modernity focus is there)
So, when I see contemporary-modern!AU takes of Tommy that are like, representing him as a relatively humdrum part of the capitalist consumer status quo, or even as a luddite who can't and won't use an Iphone, I scratch my head. I do think he’s *not* much of an innovator, but he is absolutely a considered first-gen adopter and recognises (and takes) opportunity regarding tech innovation with little concern for risk.
I have contemplated would rich modern!AU Tommy with disposable income finance startups if they pitched well: probably yes, because he takes gambles; with a personally vested interest in the innovators in the same way he had that vested interest in Bonnie. Startups as horses or boxers on a diff playing field, win some, lose some, etc.

Hey, do you remember the illegal carp farming AU?
So, after you asked for ideas for may the 4th (yeah i know you got one already) i was thinking of how to make the carp farming Au into canon-verse AU
Primordial rule of the Canon Carp Cartel AU: Everything about Qui Gon Jinn has to be explained via the carp theory.
WHy didn't he take obi wan at first/said he didn't take new padawans? He knew they would find out about the carp operation and couldn't risk it
Why did he take anakin? The prophecy. but the reason no jedi cares about it is bc it is a carp prophecy and not a jedi one. the prophecy is right bc darth vader incidentally kills all carp farmers in the known universe, bringing balance to the carp force
Xanatos? Didn't actually fall. He faked it bc his jedi work was taking too much time and he wanted to spend more time on the farm
the reason that one person offers obi one death sticks? death sticks are slang for fried fish sticks and obi wan has the smell of someone involved in the underground carping business
as always—barring the times you live up to your url—you’re a genius

hello! I am wanting one of your keychains, so i asked my brother to buy me one (i have NO money lol) but he said that it was sketchy, cause the website has ‘cartel’ in it and wasn’t properly formatted^^’ i was wondering if you could clear up the suspicions cause i really want one? (:
“big cartel” is the name of the platform that lets small businesses/individuals make website storefronts to sell their things while handling some taxes + etc for them. If he thinks the website is unprofessional, it’s because I’m not a corporation with a website developer budget- I’m one full-time student packing orders from his apartment. In which case there’s not much I can say to convince him ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

i watched the livestream of trump signing executive orders and answering questions from the press. here are some of the big ones + other things mentioned today:
trump declared a national emergency at the southern border + is getting the US military more involved in stopping "invasions including mass migration"
no one can declare asylum in the US
all existing appointments for people wanting to legally become US citizens are canceled
birthright citizenship (aka the 14th amendment) is now gone
ICE sweeps beginning "soon," not specifying when (though there are rumors it's starting tomorrow in sanctuary cities such as chicago)
mexican cartels are now designated "foreign terrorist organizations" and trump is not opposed to US troops entering mexico to eliminate them
he restored the death penalty for "crimes committed by illegal aliens"
biden had signed an executive order attempting to stop cops from using chokeholds or doing no-knock warrants. trump just revoked that order
25% tariffs on canada and mexico begin on feb 1 2025 — expect a lot of produce imported from mexico to get more expensive soon
tariffs on china will begin soon, not specified when
trump said he intends to take back the panama canal, did not specify when or how
january 6 insurrectionists are to be immediately released/pardoned
he pardoned the leader of the proud boys
tiktok has a 90 day extension, during which the US gov will try to buy 50% of tiktok. trump said he no longer cares that china is "spying on our young people," but he wants to buy half of tiktok so the US government "can police it a little bit, or a lot." if tiktok will not sell, it will be banned in the US again.
he claims the people of greenland want to become part of the US
he says the gulf of mexico is now to be called the "gulf of america" + denali is now to be called "mount mckinley"
alaska is to be mined and become the US' main source for fossil fuels
the green new deal and "electric vehicle" (green energy) mandates are over
the US has withdrawn from the paris climate agreement
the US has withdrawn from the world health organization
reproductiverights.gov is already gone
the US now "only recognizes two genders, male and female"
trans women prisoners are to be housed in male prisons; gender affirming care for prisoners is gone
self-identification for gender on passports, government IDs, and social security cards is gone
all federal employees are required to work in the office five days a week, no more working from home
trump said the US is going to "pursue our manifest destiny into the stars" and plant a US flag on mars
sources on what executive orders were signed: one two three
and lastly, some things that happened during the inauguration:
the pastor who blessed the inauguration during the swearing in ceremony has already announced a new meme coin/cryptocurrency
trump did not put his hand on the bible + there are rumors the pope is going to say trump is the antichrist
the wealthiest people on the planet — the CEOs of twitter/tesla, amazon, google, meta, and even the CEO of tiktok — who own almost all communication platforms used by westerners — stood directly behind trump as he was sworn in
elon musk, the wealthiest person alive, who has been given his own vaguely-defined US government agency, did a nazi salute on stage at the presidential podium. neo-nazis are already celebrating
