MazM Metamorphosis thoughts
mazm look away im gonna be saying some shit.
SO. I haven't finished the game yet unlike hns which i speedran in 3 days oops. But im getting through it when i do remember.
For starters let's do some positives. I know I'll be getting... pretty negative soon, so I'll at least be nice at first.
Good art! This is one of the first MazM games which maha and crack haven't worked on. I MISS THEM!!! But the new artist, martin isn't half bad at all! I think their art is super charming. They have good shapes and expressions. Something really cool MazM did with the art style was having the metamorphosis episodes translate the irl characters into a sketchier art style to illustrate the fact that its a story. Its really creative and brings some uniqueness to it. The cg cards are in a goregous messy sketchy style thatnreally shows the turmoil in Kafkas heart I love it so much. So not lacking in that department.
Nowwww I don't know how much I can judge historical fiction/rpf. I always function under a basis of as long as its respectful (especially considering it's Kafka... poor dude went through a lot) that it's fine. So far I think its quite alright. The portrayal of emotional abuse is really chilling. Honestly scared the shit outta me... good writing. Ill come back later to this once I'm done.

You can tell mazm lost half their employees . Adyu (the animator) left the team in janurary. They did all the chibi sprites and live 2d rigging in previous games so all the characters movements are bc of them. If they don't have an animator they can't do the chibi world things they did in previous games. People complained abt mazm games lack of gameplay before but this takes it to a new level. They made do with what they had in a visual novel format but I just don't think it's as engaging as what they had before. Especially considering the fact that we don't have diverging options. Lessa Checkmate is in a similar format but I recall they mentioned it had multiple endings and alternate forms of gameplay involving chess iirc. Which is a fair compromise. But here it just feels a bit empty without extra gameplay. Like. It's ridiculous seeing the Kafka sprite just lie in bed or have a desk in front of him thats like a wide piece of wood. Theyre not animated properly like the Hyde and Seek live 2d. Which is a damn shame! Martin did such a wonderful job on the art and it should have been brought to life by good animations.
I understand MazMs going through reforms and shit rn, but we had it good with jnh/poto/pechka that was PEAK. HNS/pechka was actually on top and while Thy Creature lacked in plot, everything else is really incredibly like the lore and worldbuilding and the characters. If MazM works on dracula, id rather it be a thy creature than a metamorphosis.

I'm not fond of real scene or play by play season episode rp and will steer clear of it but like I will be happy to do a non related to a season hunter in the Bunker or travel from motel to motel hunt style if you insist to not have an AU.

I have a theory I like to use in rps for Gabe and if your interested ask me and I'll send it.

3. Literate or Semi lit, 3rd person only, I write like a book, no less than 3-5 sentences as a reply
4. I allow OCs but not to fond of ocxmain-character... Sorry. I'll allow it on certain occasions as long as we can have one of my main ships.
5. I can play any spn character good or bad
6. I will play John if we do a Johnlock crossover with spn (currently not looking)
7. I will play Crowley if we do a Good Omens ship crossover with spn and can also merge the Sherlock ship
8. Nothing sexual if your a minor
9. I have AU's planned if you don't have rp ideas.

And I love it if you know Norse Myth version of Loki and combine him/her/them) NGL I usually turn Loki into a tired soccer mom or Gabe's best friend who keeps trying to get into his or his partners pants if we're not using my OCs I have for Loki specifically.

- semi-lit/lit, i stay around a three to six paragraphs depending on how much needs to be said, my starters are usually longer as in pushing on 6 paragraphs however i don't worry about length, ofc the lengths will depend on the scene, as long as it gives enough to work with and fits whats happening, i just mirror the other person in terms of it all!
- i rp and reply mostly or at least once daily (unless ofcourse i/you notify the other that you cannot that you are busy or sick or anything) this means i at least want to know you are alive once daily, be it in the form of a OOC DM if busy or a RP reply, and you can reply whenever—don't feel pressured to rush replies out quickly, timing is not important to me! i myself mostly reply around once or twice daily in RP (i write slow, lol), while OOC it depends.
- NO smut
- English is my second language, although i've been speaking and writing in it most of my life, i still may make some slight mistakes
- i roleplay in private discord servers using tupperbox, but tupperbox is not must, though!
- we will also most likely exchange writing/RP samples- it's just the easiest way to see if our RP styles click and if we are both looking for the samw thing in RP!

Side Note, reposting these on the blog, as I've been informed that some people cannot access Carrd. So here we go. 1: This is a private, selective and mutuals only blog. We must be following each other to interact. I need this in order to protect myself from people who have hurt me in the past. This isn't me trying to be mean, I just like to actually follow the people I write with and for them to follow me as a lot of my stuff will be revealed through background posts and headcanons. I will be checking your rules and carrds as well, or pinned posts. 2: So let me start by saying I do have many chronic health issues and roleplay is a form of stress relief for me. From time to time I can be slow, I apologize in advance for that. If you feel like I've missed a response, please contact me. 3: When it comes to interactions, I don't do greeter posts. When you come to my blog and follow, feel free to send memes, reply to starter calls, hop into my DMS for plotting. I'm pretty chill. 4: This blog may contain triggering content. My OC went through some traumatic situations and therefore I plan on covering mental health as well as themes that might be triggering to some. I will try to use tags, if something HAS triggered you, please let me know and I will try to tag it appropriately. I want my mutuals to be comfortable with me.
5: On the subject of shipping. I am multiship, but no two ships happen at the same time unless discussed with ALL muns involved. On the grounds of shipping, I love to talk things out when it comes to ships. You will see many different forms of ships on this blog. My character as well as myself are pansexual, therefore you may see him in hetero and homosexual ships. If this is something that bothers you, I understand if you unfollow. 6: Policing mutuals, will NOT occur on this ship. I've had personal issues with certain people, therefore I do not interact with them, however if others do that's totally fine. If I am told that they are acting towards you in the same why they did me I will let you make your own decisions on the situation, if asked I WILL explain my side of it and my experiences. Other than that it's YOUR choice who you write with, no one else controls that. 7: OOC Drama and Callout Posts, I will NOT interact with or tolerate. I have enough stress as it is. Going back to my second rule, I have an illness that affects my heart. If drama starts I will soft block you for a time. I don't like it, you need to be aware of what your actions can do to the people around you. At the end of the day we are all human and make mistakes when upset and even when we aren't upset. We are all adults here, lets act like it. 8: Plotting, I'm normally a go with the flow, let the muses do what they do type of human. However, I know some people love to plot out their work. That's totally cool too, just understand with my illness that might take a lot more than I've got the spoons for. Doesn't mean I'm not interested, I just have very little brain function most of the time. 9: If you have an issue with something I've written, please reach out in DMS so we can discuss it. If you need to unfollow that's fine too. I totally understand doing what you need to do to take care of yourself. 10: Discord is available for those who I am close to. RULES
These will make things so much easier for everyone involved. Please read these, and understand that any steps outside of the boundaries made in these rules are grounds for being blocked. With no warning, no explanation, and no remorse.
1. There will be no shipping if there is no build-up to it. While I have preferred ships ahead of time for them, I will ship almost anything with chemistry.
OCs and crossover characters are welcome to try and ship but do not just jump in expecting a ship. Desired characters to ship with will be listed on their shipping calls, but I will never, ever force a ship. That being said, I love shipping and will most likely be into it! Just let them have some time.
I do not have exclusive ships and I will ship with multiples of each character.
2. HEAVY warnings for: Gore, blood, canon-typical violence, monsters, religious themes, trauma, PTSD, regressive coping mechanisms, mental/physical/sexual abuse, mentioned CSA, unhealthy relationships, witchcraft, supernatural horror, body horror, death, cruelty, sociopathy, animal cruelty, animal death, fantasy body horror, mentally ill muses, mental health, dimension travel.
Know that I will not limit myself or my muses in any way if not asked by a specific partner. I will not write sexual abuse on this blog, though it can/will be talked about if it happens. Everything is tagged with cw -tag-. If you need something tagged I will tag it happily, just let me know.

I have never experienced a callout post that had any factual evidence to it. If I am interacting with an actual predator of some sort and you have actual proof DM me about it. This goes double for minors lying about their age. These are the ONLY exceptions to this rule.

Semi-selective here means that I will write with almost anyone, but I don’t accept one-liners unless it’s a crack thread.

TEN Q’S:
1. when are you usually online? I’m most active weekday evenings, EST! I have a full-time (and then some) 9-5 job so when I’m here in the afternoons, I’m either working from home or just liking/sending on mobile. I’m much more of a night owl than an early bird though, but I try not to do any real thread writing after 2 AM or so. I never write anything good after 2 AM.
2. what verses are you involved in outside of this page? Most of my AUs take place on this page, but I’ve gone back and forth on restarting my Fujiko Mine blog again. I think Fujiko, like most of the other muses I’ve written, I tend to want to write in specific scenarios/against specific character types only. Unlike with Sonia, where it’s far easier and more interesting for me to adapt her to different verses and situations.
3. what is your biggest RP pet peeve? Formatting pet peeves aside (super small text and putting multiple spaces between words), my biggest RP pet peeve is this:
Asking for meme starters/starter calls, never replying to said starters, and asking for more starters. While never communicating feedback or constructive criticism about what would make a thread or interaction more appealing and/or engaging, or answering memes/asks I send.
This is one of the main reasons I’ll simply drop a writing partner. I never mind redoing introductions or working together with a mun to plot an interaction we both want to write! But I do mind being constantly asked for starters and having them never be turned into threads.
On the other hand, one of my lesser pet peeves are very quick replies, and this is entirely a ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ issue. Mainly, I like to keep three habits when roleplaying: 1. replying to all of my active threads in a consistent and timely fashion, 2. replying to all current threads before taking on new starters/memes and 3. taking time away from the dash to read/watch/play different things in order to take a breather, think about where I want interactions to go, and get ideas. That’s harder for me to do when muns reply quickly (I usually say 48 hours or less, but I’ll say 24 hours or less here. I’m still a slow but steady writer!), and that’s entirely on me and my habits.
My way of addressing it is, in this situation, I won’t queue my replies in the order I receive threads: I try to space out replies for muns who reply very fast with muns who reply a bit more slowly, so I’m not overwhelmed with a bunch of replies at once. I try not to be the mun who takes on too many asks and threads and then has to drop them.
4. are you drawn to specific types of muses? When I was a younger writer in RP, it was usually badass women with weapons and femme fatales (aka. I’ve had Fujiko as a muse for a long time! Just not on tumblr). In the past 5-8 years? Definitely young ladies with Rich People Problems: Sybil Crawley/Branson, Veronica Lodge, and now Sonia Nevermind. If I could’ve ever figured out how to play a Persona game, I probably would’ve picked up Haru Okumura by now. Mostly though, I love writing Rich People Problems: royals, high society, just plain wealthy, etc.
5. are there recurring themes in your writing that people might not notice? Tbh I don’t really think any of my themes are that hidden, per se? Though one I do hope to emphasize in my long-term interactions, especially in Sonia’s older verses, is how much less black-and-white she sees her parents. As a teenager, she really does believe her father can do no wrong and all of the ill will in their unhappy marriage is due to her mother and her attitude and many affairs. The older she becomes, the more she’s able to recognize her mother and father in shades of gray. Her father has made plenty of mistakes and, the more she can come to understand what her mother has experienced, the more she can come to understand her behavior, especially towards her.
6. what are your favorite RP trends? I love the silly “character has appeared what to do?” meme so much. I know charts and quizzes are fun and all, but I get burned out on those. But this meme? This meme will always lead to quick and fun interactions, particularly with muses and muns I’m already threading with.
And I love info pages and carrds on tumblr, preferably linked to a pinned post. I’m on mobile a lot these days, especially at work, and if a blog follows me without their info in a pinned post I likely can’t follow back until I get on my computer and look at their blog there. This is my plea to please make your rules/muses/mun pages mobile-accessible! I’m not a fan of google docs for info, though: only interest checkers. Because they are a challenge to read on mobile.
7. what is your process for starting a new story with someone?

Yeah, you get the drill. :) Listen, I like memes for several reasons: 1. I can often get an idea of the tone of the thread the other mun is looking to write based on the prompt. 2. a muse and/or verse will be attached to it if the blog is a multi. I rarely do starter calls because, in the past, my starters often get ignored and I’m not a fan of greeter posts.
Beyond memes, I also like plotting OOC here or on discord for threads. That ensures that both muns are interested and engaged in the plot, and that any godmodding/toe-stepping questions can be addressed before interactions begin.
I’m not the best with unprompted IC asks though, especially those turned into threads. I’m notorious for misunderstanding asks, particularly if they’re related to pop culture I’m unfamiliar with (Sonia and I have a few things in common...), and it can be awkward for everyone involved.
8. how do you feel about duplicates? I don’t mind other takes on my muse at all. She’s a canon muse from a popular franchise and it’s to be expected, but I also know that not everyone will like the way I write Sonia. She’s canon-divergent with a lot of headcanons and history regarding her family, her culture, and her country. That, and my preferred writing style and dynamics, may very well not appeal to everyone. And that’s just fine! Every interpretation of her is valid and if a mun doesn’t like one mun’s style of writing and interpreting her, they can write with another.
What I do mind are twin verses and long-lost relatives, for one of the points listed above: I have a lot of headcanons and lore about Sonia, plenty that I haven’t even shared in headcanon posts or threads yet, and I both keep to those headcanons and evolve them when I wish to. Twin and relative verses don’t really account for that, and the closest thing I’ve got to a twin verse is Sonia’s Vampire!AU anyway, where I’d write both the past and present Sonia.
I also mind stealing headcanons. Don’t do it. It’s bad form. I try not to follow solo Sonia blogs just so there’s little possibility of this happening but if she’s on your multi, I don’t mind.
9. how long have you been involved in roleplaying? I started in either 1999 or 2000. I’m aware that I’ve been roleplaying longer than some muns on this site have been alive, and I don’t intend on stopping anytime soon :)
10. is there a muse or verse you wish you could write in, but haven’t?
.....Bridgerton AU!
Now that I’ve gotten that out of my system (muses in a Bridgerton world, Bridgerton muses themselves, YES GOOD. If you’ve been here for awhile, this is probably old news but I can’t not mention it!), I’d like to explore more historical AUs, particularly anything mid-18th Century onward. My reasoning for this is entirely due to the available history/tech/arts from then on. I’m not great with high fantasy components, but more urban fantasy concepts are mostly fine with me. Just don’t expect Sonia to have magic powers.
In a very, very specific sort of plot, I’d be interested in a time-travel story, too.
Otherwise, I like exploring Danganronpa muses post-high school: college aged, high school reunions, etc. The reunion plot, especially in a Non-Despair context, can be particularly fun!
And finally: give me your otome muses for threads. @dangaer and @hitobanju, I’m looking at you. If and when you are wanting to thread some long-term interactions...gimme. DiaLovers, Piofiore, and Cupid Parasite scream the loudest for crossovers right now but I’m getting pretty fluent in otome.

so you’ve been roleplaying for years... things change, the way the community does things shift, and sometimes there’s new skills you need to pick up and adjust to in order to make your time rping as creatively rich and fulfilling as it can be. one of those things that’s become extremely important is plotting & hcing. either in groups, in indie, or doing 1x1s, these two are the foundation to your interaction (unless you’re the type to wing it). sometimes when i interact with people, it seems they don’t really click with this process, so in the guide below, i’ll help to explain why these are so important, and how to do it in a way that not only gives you a rich plot, but helps inspire and keep your writing partner engaged with you.
disclaimer --- this is just my personal experience and opinions being shared. i am not the end-all-be-all on how to interact with writing partners. this is just here to get people to begin thinking about things they otherwise wouldn’t have thought about.

WHY IS PLOTTING & HCING SO IMPORTANT?
firstly, rp has changed a lot since the days of launching into an rp or writing a random starter for a new follower. things are a lot more established and regardless of if you’re in a bio/skeleton rp with pre-written connections, or you’re in a new plotless group or indie and you’re coming up with them on your own, it’s a major foundation to your writing experience, so don’t treat it lightly!
secondly, regardless of format, and with the shifts in rp culture, behind the scenes plotting & hcing is crucial to the development of your plot & characters. as writers, we take more time with our replies so development on dash happens a lot slower. personally i don’t mind that, but i don’t want that to hinder my writing experience so i like taking things behind the scenes to help build up dynamics and situations so the whole relationship isn’t based off one or two threads/instances.
lastly, it helps to keep things inspiring. sound dumb? you bet, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles baby. so many times i have plotted ships, sibling relationships, best friends, or other core relationships, and wanted to sink my teeth in relationship lore and background and dynamics, only to be returned with “hahah yes! i love that!” now i understand this is never ill-intentioned, but it does suck the muse right out the situation. if you do not validate & expand on your partner’s ideas, it’s not going to make that writer’s ideas feel appreciated or loved. the way to tell them you love their ideas? sink your teeth right back and send an equally meaty response right back!
PART ONE: SO YOU WANT TO PLOT
you don’t need this post to tell you how to come up with plot ideas, that’s a whole different guide, but let’s say you’re in the brainstorming process. you’re throwing ideas back and forth based on your muse’s two backgrounds and seeing what sticks. what is SUCH a downer, is when a writing partner is just ... not contributing. yes, we are all guilty of the line “i’m open to anything!” but try and limit yourself to using that line once in a conversation. hell, i prefer it when a person doesn’t even say it at all and they’re HONEST. if i come in guns-a-blazing and i ask ‘what plots do you need filled?’ if a person responds with ‘i need someone who hurt my muse’ there’s two option, i fill that plot, or i don’t. it’s that simple. don’t be afraid to say what you want, the worst that can happen is the person says ‘eh, i don’t really think that fits my character’ and you come up with something else! but when you’re already passionate about the idea, you’re setting yourself up for such great success!
so what do you do when your one (1) braincell isn’t working and you can’t come up with any connection ideas? two options, you can either go to one of the dozens of guides for basic connection ideas and give your partner something, or you can look at the other person’s bio, and your muse, and try and find connections between them. both of these are painfully easy! i’m a personal fan of the latter as it seems a bit more grounded and juicy than the former, but those can be twisted into something great too! **if you’re in a group setting, even asking what that person’s other connections are, and piggybacking off of that. these create super spicy connections. example: you find out muse a is muse b’s ex, and your muse, muse c, is best friends w muse b, so it’s safe to assume your muse c will probably not get along with muse a.
this important thing is not to make your partner feel like they’re doing all the work. because that’s never fun, and truthfully, it doesn’t make that person want to write with you if you’re not also putting in the elbow grease. plotting is fun, not a chore! make it a party!
PART TWO: NOW YOU HAVE TO BACK IT UP
you’ve got your plot now, congrats! and you’re so excited. but now you need that plot to be fleshed out a bit. there’s some history there so you’ve got to establish it. in comes the powerhouse--- my favorite part to this whole thing: HCING. it’s the most laid back, and in my opinion, creative part of the rping process. truthfully, i enjoy it more than threads because of the absolute insanity you can dig up. but i only love it if my partner can hand it back just as i can serve it.
maybe you’ve never quite thought that this part was that important, but i can assure you, if a person is giving you 3+ sentences about the dynamic of your characters, they’re trying to hc with you, and if you don’t enrich them, your dynamic is going to wither away.
i brought up an idea in the first part of this guide that’s extremely important to how you hc with your writing partner: VALIDATE & EXPAND. it’s the idea that no matter how much or how little your rp partner gives you in terms of an hc, you respond to it with a validation, which can range anywhere from ‘i LOVE that’ to as simple as a key smash and the pleading emotion, or even repeating a fraction of what they said to show you understand their vision. but then you have to back that up with expanding on that idea. hcs could be about a situation or about your writing partner’s character, so expand on how your character feels and reacts to things. it’s beyond discouraging when i write a whole idea out, explaining how my character feels in this emotionally intense setting, and my writing partner only gives me the validation portion, and now i have no idea how my opp’s character thinks, feels, or interacts.
see, a point i mentioned above is the fact that threads don’t work like they used to. and that’s fine! but hcing is an easy and fun way to make up for the fact that we take time with our threads now. if you’re rping to find rich, in-depth, satisfying dynamics, it’s going to take many many months to get your understanding of your opp’s muse, and the relationship they have, hcing fast tracks that process. i’m writing with you, i love your muse, give me the dirty details, i promise it’s not obnoxious. the more your give back, the more you will receive. so why wait around, sitting on our thumbs for me to fully get a grasp of your character’s voice, and your character’s thoughts, when we could do that on chat and have a grand time.
but now you’re thinking to yourself: okay, but how exactly do i validate and expand? and for that, we go to EXAMPLE-BOT 3000 !! not a real bot, unfortunately, but example bot has dug up a personal interaction i’ve had hcing. for context, this is a 1x1 writing partner i’ve had for years. we have an excellent dynamic and they are perfect. they have also given me permission to use our convos as example.
here is my message [ CONTEXT: this is a sandbox-star-wars-esque verse]
Okay but I had a thot in the shower,,, where the best thoughts are had. And what if,,, after this meeting and they part ways and such and it was just another weird occurrence in their lives, blastis gets a mission and it’s either to protecc salia or like guide salia across the galaxy to do something smth and save some lives or whatever. And ofc not because she couldn’t take care of herself but he has smth she doesn’t that gives an edge or just a close loved one of her’s didn’t want to see her get hurt. So you have these two traveling across the galaxy,,, sometimes arguing bc she can manage herself but he’s just fulfilling the mission. And them both kicking but. And all the steamy tension and cliches.
let’s break this message down before we get into the response. first, hcs don’t have to be formal. they are the most fun when they’re less together and don’t rely so much on “sounding good”. you’re just rolling off the top of your brain, chatting like you would with a friend, don’t worry too much on formalities because this isn’t the place for that.
i am also presenting my idea in a way that is confident, and with plenty of ideas to work on. i am involving my partner’s character but not godmodding. i am taking things i have learned from character introductions (like salia being independent and empowered, and wanting to do good/help others) and not disrespecting them, but having her take part in the plot. there are also small bits at the end of this idea that are little nuggets to build off of.
let’s look at my partner’s response.
AAAAH okay i love the idea!!! however shes a v. freelance kinda healer and doesnt really take official things. and she doesnt have loved ones that would know if there was danger - she can telepathically communicate with her own people but if she doesnt want them to know things they cant just. force their way in its a Closed Communication line not an open invitation into her thoughts asdfghjsh. But i could imagine that some guy or family hire her to find their children maybe who were lost on their adventure/mission with friends and the last message sounded like one was hurt,,, badly. and the other cant help for some reason. and they hire blastis to both protect her and later the people shes supposed to heal??
but anYWAY the Important part is ofc. the tension. and his big ass in her ship bc why would she?? take another if hers is right there. so hes gonna take that single bed and not complain. but ooof those two?? just kicking ass and being amazing. growing on each other more and more.
right off the bat is validation. and validation doesn’t have to be as direct as it is in this message. the validation is important here specifically, my partner showed they were interested and supportive of the idea i presented, but needed the plot to fit in their character’s story better. we see them making adjustments--- this is a collaborative experience so i alone shouldn’t be the one coming up with the plot, nor would i want my idea taken just as is. instead they mold it to fit what makes sense, getting more specific than my idea with a “mission purpose”. this is where the bouncing off of each other begins.
they then take the “bait” and start building on the tension our muses will experience (this is a ship afterall). while this is the beginning of our conversation, and there’s aren’t specific moments we’re working off of, this is setting the ground for future headcanons (see: the focus on sexual tension, living in a ship together, kicking butt), we are both mutually giving each other little tethers to take hold of. this is a very good start to begin working out the dynamic and situations these two characters are found in, with multiple different launch-off points.
CONCLUSION
there’s no right or wrong way to rp. even the tips listed here might not be applicable to your style, just having the idea in the back of your mind helps. the important thing is you and the person you’re writing with are having fun. you both are respecting each other’s time and ideas and creating a beautiful dynamic or world or relationship. this is a collaborative experience, and it’s important not to leave your partner feeling like they’re doing all the heavy lifting creatively.

A History of Wild Things
Overall Score: 3 out of 5
Christmas Week of 2021 was a pretty hectic week. It started off with a Doctor’s appointment. Ever since my accident, Doctor’s offices have given me a severe onset of anxiety. I needed a book to read while I waited through about 3 hours of doctor-visitation and the follow up labs. While I wait for results, I think I want to go ahead and get this review written and maybe sometime in the new year I’ll finally know what’s physically wrong with me at least.
The overall thoughts on this book: I might do an in depth look into this book in a different post. This will get technical and bring about a lot of plot points and some plot holes that I made note of during my initial read. There was a lot of “well, just fucking RUN” points in this book that would have abruptly cut the narrative short. It might have *also* killed the protagonist, but we can’t all be perfect. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
But that being said, doing that in-depth look would be SPOILERS and I aptly try to avoid those things like the plague in these reviews. So. Like I said. If I actually care enough to get around to it (and considering the slog of books I want to write about and get to posting about on this blog, not likely) that will go in a separate post. If you’re that curious about it, badger me about it in the asks or something.
Okay. So my favorite thing about this book is Ernshaw’s descriptions. They’re so palpable and.. Cozy. The way she writes about the dead of winter and the summer in this book is fantastic. This earned the book some seasonal titles. Because if you’re reading them during either season it’s exactly what you’re looking for.
Synopsis: Travis Wren is the master of finding lost people. It doesn’t matter how long ago the case went cold. What’s old in the world is never truly forgotten by it, and the memories of those things linger around in Travis’ mind like ghosts. He can see brief glimpses into the past and he can use it to find whatever remains in the present time. The book starts off with Travis being assigned the mysterious case of Maggie St. James– an author of a horrifying children’s series that has gone missing in the heart of a mysterious mountain forest. Well. That’s what happens until Travis gets lost too. So. The real question is whatever happened to Travis Wren?
The Characters: Travis: I have a quiet admiration for Travis. I wrote a nice long answer to an ask about him while I was working on this review in the background. Everything I wrote in that ask still stands. The parts of the novel where we’re travelling with Travis feel like an open confessional. We’re listening to the sins of a dying man who experienced some fucked up things and had to live with them. Maggie St. James: I want to mention that we barely catch a glimpse of the character Maggie in this book. Most of what we can infer about her is from characterizations from those surrounding her and looking into her disappearance. I think there’s a real fucked up beauty to Maggie– writing her scary children’s tales based off of her mother’s stories.
— Spoilers(?) — The-I-was-raised-in-a-cult-starter-pack Trio: Theo: Theo is an endearing young man who takes over the perspective from Travis when Travis disappears. He’s mercurial, polite… but at the center of it all he has a penchant for danger and that gets him in trouble. For some particular reason, he doesn’t even balk at the idea of danger. It just doesn’t cross his mind.
Calla: Theo’s wife. She is the daughter of the original pastoral cult, and grew up with her sister Bee. Calla senses that her husband is lying to her, but she doesn’t know about what. She spends a lot of her time gardening and caring for the community.
Bee: A girl who tragically lost her eyesight at a young age from an unknown illness. Bee is a headstrong young woman who is in line to marry the next head of pastoral, Levi. She’s a strange young lady, preferring to stay to herself among the community. She does love her sister Calla, and at times seems wary of Theo. I absolutely love Bee’s perspective of things because the author relies on imagery other than well *sighted* imagery which is different; usually books place priority on describing things based on sight.
—END SPOILERS—
The Plot: If I haven’t given it away already, the plot revolves around Theo eventually discovering something belonging to Travis Wren, our missing protagonist in search of Maggie St. James. Theo’s wife Calla is suspicious he’s doing something to hurt the community and lying to her, all the while Bee is working through some personal issues while trying to go about her daily life in Pastoral. All three of these characters quickly turn and get at odds with one another which is– predictably– to their deficit. Has nobody ever heard of talk therapy?
Parting Thoughts: After reading this book, I spent a lot of time thinking about the themes presented at the end of the book and the question it posed. I also spent a lot of time weighing the pros and the cons of that farmcore-y life vs our own. Like this book, if nothing else, was very easing to my very weary and very very distracted mind. As predictable as it was, I didn’t outright hate it for being trite or trying to say too much. It was very peaceful, while still being able to be ominous and moody. For that, I think we have the author’s ability to write prosaic and set a good scene.
Is it worth picking up? Only if you’re looking for something to tear into for a descriptive sort of mouthfeel; you’d be doing to this book essentially what you do to tea. Steep it and taste the flavor of it as it changes.

(1/3) Solitary confeinment ask: the background is that the character (a strategic genius and a trained fighter) was a colonel running a death squad. After witnessing the death of his only family (wife and child, a collateral damage to heroes saving the world), unable to deal with grief, trauma and survivors guilt executes a series of terrorist attacks against the heroes to avenge his family.
(2/3) He succeeds, but before he manages to comment suicide to join his family (final part of his plan) the heroes stop him, so he can answer for his crimes. He is put pernamently on suicide watch in a solitary confinement in a state of the art prison. The character is content with the sucess of his plan and listens to the guards, but receives no psychological help (the character is deeply traumatised byt the death of his family and suicidal). (3/3) Other contact, aside from the guards, is the warden, who occasionally comes to mock the character. The character appears stoic, but deep down the emotional pain is overwhelming. After 3 years the heroes (not the ones directly responsible to the characters tragedy) bust him out from prison because they need his help to stop a bigger bad guy.
(4/3) My question is how in the span of 3 years can the characters mental state deteriorate and is it possible that in those conditions (solitary, no psychological help) he can just mentally heal on his own? Also, after 3 years of solitary, how would the character react to being instantly thrown into the middle of dangerous mission with people he doesn’t play well with? Thank you!

Honestly I think if someone was already suicidal and spent three years in solitary confinement with no psychological help there’s a good chance they’d be dead.
The ‘safe’ period for solitary confinement is a week. It makes all pre-existing mental health problems worse. There’s not any getting around that.
A person in this situation would not ‘heal on their own’. That’s sort of the mental health equivalent of wondering if a character who’s had their gut cut open will be able to stitch themselves up and survive when the character has no equipment, no medical training and is in the process of bleeding to death.
This isn’t a survivable scenario, ‘suicide watch’ or not. Believe me someone who is determined to die will be able to find a way.
Even if it was a survivable scenario, someone who has just come out of three years solitary confinement would not be able to…. how do I put this… function. He would not be able to relate is a healthy manner to the people around him, whether he got on with them or not. He would not be able to assist them. He would be having a mental health crisis.
I can assure you from personal experience that having panic attacks, severe depression or any of the other common symptoms of solitary (which begin to manifest within a week remember) is not ‘helpful’ to anything.
You’ve got the wrong idea about just how harmful solitary is. And it’s OK to be wrong. This sort of information is hard to find, that’s why I’m here.
The important thing is what you choose to do now.
The damage solitary confinement does is routinely ignored, denied or underplayed in reality. Fiction that presents isolation as harmless feeds in to the public perception that this is not ‘really harmful’.
I can’t make you or anyone else take solitary confinement seriously.
I can tell you that I’ve read survivor accounts of self mutilation (cutting up their own face) and psychotic breaks (hallucinations, paranoid etc) that happened in the time period you’ve proposed. Solitary caused that. That is what it does to people.
Because humans are social animals and need contact with members of their own species in the same way they need air, food and water.
So what can we do to bring this more in line with reality and remove the torture apologia tropes?
For starters read the masterpost on solitary confinement here. Then read Shalev’s Sourcebook on Solitary Confinement here.
Pay particular attention to the symptoms and consider your choice of which symptoms 3-5 you would add to the character’s pre-existing mental health problems (which will get worse.)
Write down the list of long term symptoms the character will get out of solitary with. I’m going to pick a couple just as an illustration:
Suicidal urges (pre-existing)
Anxiety
Severe mood swings
Memory problems
Irrational impulses
I didn’t pick depression because that’s commonly co-morbid with suicidal urges and the character might well have it already.
Immediately after release, with no mental health support and being thrown straight into danger- This character would have panic attacks. Would forget important information. Would swing from apathetic, to furious, to suicidal so fast no one would be able to keep up. And might deny it later. Because they might not remember the fight accurately.
I’m mapping this out because what I really want to ask is: are you sure you want to use solitary confinement in this story?
Do you really want to engage with the consequences for the character and the plot? Have you allowed space for showing these mental health problems in the story? Are you ready for the way this kind of obvious, undeniable disability would make this character the focus? Can you balance the overall plot and the development of the other characters with all this?
From everything you’ve said solitary confinement is not actually adding anything to your story. Because currently there are no lasting effects from it whatsoever, it’s just functioning as a way to take a character out of the plot for three years.
The character is already in jail. You don’t need to add in torture to take him out of the narrative for a while.
Really.
As I see it the only thing solitary is giving your narrative is elements of torture apologia.
If you want prison to be stressful for the character it can be. If you want prison to mean the character doesn’t have access to current information it can mean that too. You don’t need to add torture into the mix to achieve these things.
And if you want the character to heal over this three year period then… that can’t happen without help and without positive human contact.
I have mental health problems. They don’t get better on their own.
The idea of locking up a mentally ill person in solitary and expecting them to get better is a form of abuse (or when done by institutions torture) that has killed a lot of mentally ill people. In some countries this practice is continuing to kill mentally ill people.
If you don’t want to deal with mental illness in your story this best thing to do is not to write it. You decided this character was suicidal. You decided that he’s going to be tortured. Neither of these things need to happen.
Look it’s OK if you don’t know enough to write this stuff yet. It’s OK to get something wrong and work to find out more or correct it.
But as things stand I think your story would work better if you took out any abusive or torturous elements. Because torture should have consequences.
If you’re not prepared to write those consequences then you’re not really dealing with the magnitude of the crime.

hello!! i just wanted to ask- i wanna do an ouat rewatch bc CAPTAIN SWANN but its pretty long and i honestly dont care for the other characters/how badly the overall writing was handled.. which are your favourite captain swan eps? anything them centered and i think ill just skip around to rewatch their romance as they did invent romance 😭😭 ty in advance <3
they absolutely did invent romance, you are right about that and i love them so much
UHMMMM as far as my favorite CS eps, here’s a roadmap of what I personally consider key eps in their journey (some of this is from memory but I haven’t done a full rewatch in a while so i’m going through the episode list as a refresher)
2x06: Tallahassee--this is a must-watch ep for any CS fan, and I really think this is the episode that sparked the fire that CS would become as a fandom. It has everything--flirtatious banter, all kinds of tension, deliberate parallels drawn between Emma and Killian’s pasts, as well as their first meeting being intercut with her relationship with Neal (which serves, especially in hindsight, to highlight just how sketchy that relationship was, and why she couldn’t bring herself to trust Killian--because the last time she felt this way about anyone, it ended horribly)
2x08 and 2x09: Into the Deep and Queen of Hearts--these episodes cover the race to the portal between Emma&co and Hook/Cora and while they don’t do a ton for CS as a relationship since they’re still enemies at this point, it lays great foundation for their future relationship development. Plus, sexy swordfight, Hook going out of his way to save Aurora’s heart--he may be a pirate, but he has standards ok--and Emma realizing Cora can’t remove her heart without her permission? Poetic Cinema
2x11: The Outsider--more of a Killian-centric episode, it shows a lot of Killian at his worst but it’s necessary for his overall character arc and I genuinely love looking back and seeing just how far he managed to come, to the point of eventually even letting go of his (very understandable) grudge against Rumplestiltskin.
2x12: In the Name of the Brother--am I including this purely for Emma&Hook banter in the hospital, and Killian saying ‘hey beautiful’ when he’s lying on the road because he just got hit by a fucking car? You bet I am. Also, go to youtube and look up ‘ouat season two deleted scene jello’, because it’s beautiful and there was a tremendous outcry in the fandom when we realized it had been cut from the episode lmao (It’s also the episode that made me start shipping Frankenwolf, which I’m still sad never went anywhere, but they had a lot of potential and great chemistry.)
2x22: And Straight On Till Morning--A few of the episodes in between have some fun minor interactions and flashbacks (and I always approve of episodes where Killian gets one up on Rumple, so 2x15 is fun for me if i ignore all the Neal bits) but the finale is where we finally get a glimpse of who Killian could be beyond his need for revenge. He didn’t have to come back, he didn’t have to bring back the bean and help the town--but he did.
Season 3a: there’s a lot of really good stuff here for Hook and Emma that is interwoven between the A plots of other episodes. I think, as far as half-season arcs go, it’s one of the best (and everything after 4a bombed hard, but I digress) But there are a few episodes that stand out if you don’t want to watch the whole season. (I recommend starting with the premier though, it was a really solid season starter overall.)
3x05: Good Form--this is the culmination of David’s poisoned-by-dreamshade arc, and is also Peak Captain Charming Bromance. Hook not only keeping David’s secret, but doing everything he can to help save him??? Poetic cinema. It also provides some crucial Killian backstory, showing how he lost his brother to the very same dreamshade. Plus, the character development--Pan offers Killian a chance to escape the island with Emma if he kills David, and instead, he saves him, refusing the deal and damn the consequences. Also also? The first CS kiss which drove the fandom WILD.
3X06: Ariel--not only to I love OUaT’s take on Ariel, but this episode has the infamous Echo Cave scene, which involves a lot of feelsy confessions and Killian being the one to tell everyone that Neal is alive and helping Emma save him despite his own growing feelings for her.....IT’S JUST A LOT AND I LOVE IT.
3x07: Dark Hallow--oh man, I’d forgotten about this episode, but it has Killian and Neal fighting over Emma, which may sound eye-roll worthy, but Emma is allowed to tear them a new one about it and it’s one of the few times she’s allowed to actually???? put her own feelings first so I have to include it here on spec
3x11 and 3x12: Going Home and New York City Serenade--these mark the end of 3a and start of 3b respectively, and it has some amazing shit like Killian vowing never to forget Emma and Emma smiling as she replies, “Good.” And then she and Henry are in New York with their memories completely altered, but Killian shows up because Storybrooke is back and in jeopardy, and he helps Emma get back to her family and her home and, much later, Emma finds out he sold the Jolly Roger to be able to do it and it’s just. It’s beautiful ok.
3x17: The Jolly Roger--there’s honestly not a whole lot in the back half of season 3 (until the CS movie) but of course anything named for Hook is a must-watch, and this is where we get the iconic line I swear on Emma Swan--which is Killian saying he’s in love with her before he even realizes it. We also find out just what he did to Ariel, and his attempts to make amends are what lead to Zelena being able to curse him, so it’s great from a character perspective as well.
The next four episodes round out the end of the season, and there’s a lot of great stuff in them--Hook refusing to get Emma to kiss him, but Emma feeling like she can’t trust him because he didn’t tell her about the curse to begin with, and then kissing him anyway to save his life regardless of the consequences.... but the only ones that are absolutely necessary are the final two episodes.
They are colloquially termed ‘The Captain Swan Movie’ for a reason, after all.
Killian and Emma essentially have an entire Time Travel adventure all to themselves, where they accidentally ruin her parents first meeting and have to fix it so that she’ll even be born, Emma finally getting into the storybook, the pair of them dancing at a ball, Killian rushing to save Emma only for her to get out of the cell herself, because “The only one who saves me is me.” Killian saying “I would go to the ends of the world for her... or time.” Finally fixing the timeline and making it back to Storybrooke and Killian feeling like he doesn’t deserve a place at the table so he doesn’t go inside, but Emma comes out to him anyway and finds out he gave up the Jolly Roger for her, the true start to their relationship...... IM CRYING JUST THINKING ABOUT IT I’M SORRY.
I personally really enjoyed 4a, the Frozen arc was one of the last good half-season arcs of the show, but a lot of people disliked it so it’s really up to interpretation. I don’t have as many Intense Opinions on this season (except hating almost everything about 4b and the queens of darkness arc), but I will say the episodes with good Killian/CS moments are 4x02 (Emma nearly freezes to death, Killian is desperate to save her, Captain Charming teamwork, my heart hurts), 4x04 (Emma asks Killian out on a real date, he tries to get his real hand back from Gold, things go massively awry and he winds up back under Gold’s thumb), 4x08 (Killian tries to save Emma from Gold’s plans), 4x11 (the 4a finale is just great in general), and then..... it cannot be overstated how much I hate season 4b, but 4x15 is the Killian-centric ep where his past with Ursula is revealed and he makes amends to her in order to get her to leave the QoD alliance and it’s great character stuff for him, and then there’s the season 4 finale.
Both parts are worth watching, if only because Deckhand Coward Hook still being a braver, more heroic man than ‘Hero Rumplestiltskin’ warms the very cockles of my heart, and of course the second part of the finale has him helping Henry to save Emma and it’s beautiful and also Emma watches him die for her and it is angsty as FUCK but gods I love it. Here’s where it gets tricky, though--my recommendation is, turn the episode off right after Emma finds Killian back in the present day of Storybrooke and they reunite.
Just turn off the episode there and skip right ahead to the s6 musical episode (Emma and Killian’s wedding ep) and pretend they got married and none of seasons 5 or 6 ever happened. >.> (Although I will say certain parts of the Underworld arc were incredibly feelsy despite how much I overall hated the season: 5x11 (the 5a finale, Killian as the dark one STILL being a better man than rumple, we love to see it), 5x15 (I am not immune to Brothers Jones feelings ok), 5x20 (emma literally takes a True Love Test trying to find a way to save killian, you don’t get more romantic than that--also Killian telling Emma to promise she won’t put her armor back up just because she lost him again??? my HEART), 5x21 (Hook does what he can from the Underworld anyway and zeus sends him back to Emma, they really just said ‘today I will invent romance’ and then Did That)
And then, yeah, just skip to the wedding. It’s beautiful, I enjoyed the music, personally, though I know musical episodes are hit or miss with most people. And if you turn it off when the last musical number starts (after the wedding ceremony, I believe) you can pretend it was the end of the show! =DDD
.....Oh my god I just rambled for years. I HOPE YOU FIND THIS USEFUL, ANON. I 100% support a CS-centered rewatch, their episodes were consistently some of the best across the entire series, and they are truly one of my favorite romances of all time.
