Self Portrait with Long Hair | Feb 2024
Well, it appears I've arrived at the precipice of my sabbatical. Since this self portrait last week, I've cut 11.5 inches of my hair off, packed a backpack filled with camping and hiking gear, continued working 12+ hour days, and have done my best to fill the spaces in between with time with my loves. Leaving isn't really all that hard; I've been thinking on this seriously for a long enough time, and mentally preparing myself. I'm ready for the release into something different for a while. Admittedly, I desperately need it so I can hopefully achieve some sense of clarity, renew a sense of purpose and creativity, among other things. Sabbaticals are good for that, aren't they?
I'll try to post about once or twice a month, and barring some sort of spiritual awakening that sends me down a totally different path, I'll resume what it is I do. Be kind to yourself, and be kind to others along the way. I'm not going away, but if you see any posts from me, I probably did so while on a very long walk.
As always, you can support any photographs I make during this time by joining my Patreon. You can join for free by clicking this link: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=109941378

Do you still find film photography to be a worthy artistic pursuit for yourself?
I’d say that the use of film itself is in many ways a ritual, from the loading, to the processing and printing. It’s a process of intense focus, and even doing it consistently is itself a challenge. Paired with the cost of film and chemicals for creating prints, it’s something that nobody should consider if they’re looking to save time or money.
If taking photos as a form of expression carried through from the load, the process, and the printing, it taps into  are Gesamtkunstwerk. a term meant to express total work of art, where the very elements that go into its composition are themselves the artform. One’s choice in lens, film, developing chemicals, and the tools they use to develop all have an impact on tone and resolution, and I think that’s where the real charm lies.
As for myself, it would be nice to get back into film someday. Especially if I get to work in medium and large format film. Ilford Pan F Plus was my medium, with it’s ultrafine grain and extra slow iso 50 film, and ilford papers for printing. Of all the film and paper combinations I worked with, this one really manages to capture shades of black rather brilliantly. Some versions have come out I haven’t had a chance to work with yet. HP5 is said to work extremely well with available light, which is my forte. There’s also a lot of novel film makers out there and I’d love an opportunity to try out some of their experimental films, like wolfman and FPP XRAY! It’s not a priority for me, but I probably wouldn’t say no with the right opportunity presenting itself. I think now I’d be much more interested in photographing plants.

Purple Martin nests, HolgaWeek 2021.
Holga 120N + Ilford Pan F Plus + D76
@holgaweek is nearing and this year I'm gonna try something a little different.
First off, I'll be developing my shots using Legacy Pro L110, a cheaper yet functional equivalent to Kodak's HC110. First time using it. Should be interesting. I'll get out this week to shoot a roll of HP5 Plus 400 using my trusty old Holga Mods 120N and do a test dev before Holga Week starts. 1/31 solution seems to be the standard.
I have a bag of D76 for back-up, in case things go awry.
During HolgaWeek I'm going to shoot with two stock 120Ns, one loaded with FP4 the other with HP5. That'll cover bright light/low light situations. With any kind of luck I'll probably shoot two rolls of each.
The different part about this is the Holgas are attached to each other via the tripod mount, secured with a little bit of hook'n'loop.
This year's HolgaWeek selfie should be interesting.
