Daichi x Sugawara, mentions of Ikejiri x Daichi

Daichi had always had some feelings for Sugawara. Though those feelings seemed to have been a reflection of his previous middle school crush on Ikejiri.

A/N: yes this is inspired off a song by Usher…

Word Count: 1046

“Daichi!” He yelled from the doorway. I lifted my head from the desk to see who was yelling my name, though I already knew who it was. I could recognize his voice from miles away, Sugawara, his creaky voice was hard to miss. Sugawara, how could I not recognize his sweet voice I’d been listening to yell at me for the past 3 years?

“Suga.” I responded. “What’s up?” My lips curled into a smile when my eyes met his.

“Get your lazy ass up and come eat lunch with me.” His tone was demanding, and a playful grin crept up onto his face.

“Couldn’t be nicer about it, huh?” My eyebrows knitted into a frown, but my smile remained.

“Nah.” He always liked joking around like that. His body jerked off the door frame he was leaning on, and I watched him, with a hand supporting my chin, walk over to the desk I was sitting at. “So you’re just not gonna eat lunch? Isn’t coach Ukai always telling us to eat to get stronger and repair our muscles or whatever? C’mon, Daichi! You weren’t planning on sleeping all lunch, were ya?” He put a hand on my desk and the other on his hip, cocking it out.

I shook my head at his sassiness. After a few seconds of thinking it over, even if there wasn’t much to think of, I’d never say no to Sugawara, I stood up from my chair and playfully flicked his wrist, returning the sassy attitude.“Sure, I’ll get something from the vending machine.” He followed behind me when I started walking out of the classroom.

We walked all the way downstairs and finally arrived at a vending machine. I examined the glass for anything that looked, at least, half edible, and when my eyes landed on the prize, I grabbed a few coins from my pocket and inserted them into the machine. Sugawara imitated the beeping sounds the machine made when I typed the number of the chips I was getting. I squinted my eyes and eyed him as he did so, judging him silently, as if I wasn’t actually smiling at his gesture.

“You’re not getting anything?”

He shook his head. “Nah, already ate.” Despite that, he still stole a few of my chips. We sat at a nearby bench chatting away the little lunch time we had. I stuffed my hand in the bag of chips, looking for the last chip, but Sugawara had ate it before I could. He looked the other way like he wasn’t guilty. The bag of chips crumbled into a ball in my hands, and I threw it in the trash can next to the vending machine.

“Oh hey, is that Michimiya over there?” Sugawara gestured with his head at a group of girls in the distance. Among them, there was indeed Michimiya.

“I guess so.” I squinted my eyes to try and get a better look at the girl like that would make my vision clearer. I didn’t bother to move from the bench.

“You’re not gonna say hi to her?” He asked. His arms were crossed, and he looked at me with a raised eyebrow.

I shook my head, i’d rather stay sitting here with him. “Why?”

He shrugged. “Always had the impression you two had something going on.” He was implying a relationship. I’m not sure where he got that from.

I shook my head again. “We’re just friends, I thought you of all people would know that.” I chuckled. It was surprising to see Sugawara assume something like that.

“Eh, why do you say that?” He titled his head to look at me. His hair fell to one side of his face, and I reached my hand over to fix it. His eyes stared right into mine, and suddenly I got that familiar feeling of déjà vu.

It felt like I was back in my old club room in middle school. I remember everything so vividly like it was just yesterday and not three years ago.

Ikejiri and I were close back then. It was disappointing to find out we were going to different high schools, but life goes on, no? It may have seemed like neither of us cared all that much. I mean, of course, we cared, I did. I had been playing with Ikejiri for the past 3 years, it was hard to go our separate ways. Our last match together wasn't regrettable, not in that sense. I tried my best, we tried our best to make it to the next round. I did everything I could to play one more game with Ikejiri. That night, in the club room we were the last ones there. We were talking about whatever you'd expect a middle schooler to be talking about, and changing while doing so. I'd say it's ironic to be having a conversation about girls when you can't take your eyes off the shirtless guy in front of you.

“What about you, Daichi, saw any pretty girls today?” He asked after he’d finish talking about a girl he saw in the bleachers.

I huffed. “I’m not interested in that stuff.” Except I was, but the one I was interested in was right in front of me.

“I suppose that’s fair.” He tilted his head with a shrug after he got his shirt over his head. His hair was messed up. I reached my hand over and fixed his hair.

The only thing I regret was not being honest with him when I did have the chance to play volleyball with him, or rather be honest with myself. It’s hard to come to terms with yourself, but it’s even harder doing so years later. If only I had freed my feelings then, maybe I wouldn’t be looking for him in other men.

“Daichi. Earth to Daichi?” That familiar raspy voice spoke, and I was back in that bench again. Sugawara was holding on to my wrist, and our hands laid close by his legs. His head was still tilted, but his hair was no longer messed up; I must’ve fixed it before blanking out into my own thoughts.

My eyes widened when his voice called out my name.

“Ah, there you are.” He said.

“Sorry, I just zoned out.”

'captaincy' thoughts because i loved seeing daichi's backstory in episode 16 and i love how the episode starts with daichi's middle school team finally passing their 'first first round' and ends with hinata finally passing his 'first first round.' it was a fun little bit that definitely had me going back to watch hinata's middle school captaincy to compare with the other portrayals of captaincy we see in this episode.

like, to see all of daichi, michimiya, and ikejiri all with their moments of trying the hardest and being the tone-setter on the court, telling their team that 'we haven't lost yet' and 'they're middle schoolers, just like us' and 'we can't win unless we try'--and then being the hardest hit when their team loses because each of them is the carrier of the team's hope, for better and for worse--it's a pretty clear callback to hinata's middle school captaincy (just with the added benefit of having some more volleyball and life experience than hinata had at that point). so it's fitting that, after ikejiri has that internal monologue about 'at least i got to play volleyball' that arc ends with a lingering shot on hinata, who has never been satisfied with 'at least i get to play'--he wants to play the longest and stay on the court the whole time, and the more he learns about volleyball--because he really knew NOTHING in that first tournament when he was like 'we'll win all the games--the more he understands just how hard it is, and how much work it takes, to stay on the court the longest.

Captain Squad Headcanons

Warning: LONG post.

They all hang out on Skype the most because y'know...different prefectures lol.

The Miyagi captains see each other a lot tho!

The current second-year captains especially exchange advice a lot since they're newest to it.

Shibuya (Tokonami Captain; I'm just guessing here): Guys I think I accidentally started a disagreement between the first-years and I feel really bad about it, what do I do?

Futakuchi (Date Tech Captain): Look, I start 90% of the fights on my team so...

Towada (Ougiminami Captain): Our team just settles it in a death match.

Terushima (Johzenji Captain): We don't really fight per say, the gym just accidentally gets set on fire on occasion.

Komaki (Kakugawa Captain): Why do I feel like I'm the only one who actually has it semi-together?

Fr tho all the captains envy Komaki so much because his team is literally the only decently-sane one among them.

Like the biggest problem he has to deal with other than teens being teens is Asamushi getting too fired up sometimes and Hyakuzawa accidentally hitting his head on doorways.

As for dynamics among them...

There is a mutual agreement to keep Kuroo and Daishou separated at all times because the power of petty exes is too much for them (Iizuna is in charge of making sure they're at least 6 feet apart when possible).

The ONLY time those two have ever agreed on something was when some asshole started insulting their first-years.

The guy still gets nightmares about it.

Oikawa and Ushijima are also kept apart most times, though Oikawa's getting better at understanding him while Ushijima is starting to get why Oikawa feels the way he does.

They like to bitch about their fellow year-mates too.

Daichi complains about Suga's chaoticness and Asahi's timidness.

Kuroo complains about Yaku at any opportunity (though rarely Kai).

Oikawa loudly whines about the "disrespect" he endures from all the third-years (barring Yuda, the one who was crying with pride for all of them).

Daishou is fed up with how unhelpful his third-years are when it comes to any life advice (he doesn't have it together, but nobody else does either, sooo).

Bokuto likes to join Oikawa in his protest against "cruelty against captains"; the one he complains most about is Konoha, but the rest of them are still talked about very frequently.

Nakashima always follows up his complaints with something positive about them. Daichi is both jealous and in awe of this (little does he know it's a technique developed to stop Takeru from decking his siblings sometimes).

Ushijima doesn't like to complain about his teammates much bc he doesn't really see the point when you could just tell them they're being annoying dicks.

Iizuna's complaints usually aren't too bad and far between, but on days when Itachiyama loses practice matches due to the team's attitude...whoo boy.

Suwa is like...so calm? And his complaints are always so minor? And always with a completely patient expression? And the captains are so confused in the beginning because their only prior personal experience with Kamomedai is the few Hoshiumi interviews people manage to get and that kid sure as hell isn't this calm.

And then one day Nozawa is making provocations worthy of Futakuchi and he comes in complaining and everyone's just like there it is.

Echigo's pretty chill too, since Tsubakihara isn't a particularly rambunctious team, but some days Teradomari gets completely slandered for the dumbass moves he pulls during practice on occasion (he's trying to show off to the underclassmen; spoilers, it's not working, but Himekawa politely claps for him at least).

Kiryuu always feels really bad about venting even when it's clear he needs to (he was the one who put in the "no insulting the second or first years" rule since he felt it was unfair to the underclassmen), but he's getting better.

Him and Oikawa trade mental health tips sometimes.

The previous captains like to drop in sometimes.

It's canonical that the Date Tech third-years can't leave their underclassmen alone, so they show up most often.

The two Komakis confuse everyone to no end.

Ikejiri and Komaki H (Tokonami's old captain) show up the most for their team.

Ikejiri is delighted to catch up with Daichi (they start having monthly catch-up sessions with Yui too at one point).

Okudake and Akimiya drop by sometimes to make sure their second-years haven't convinced anyone to commit major arson or join a gang.

Moniwa, Okudake and Akimiya are highly respected by everyone for dealing with the hazardous sassy disasters known as the Date Tech, Johzenji and Ougiminami second-years.
