Randomly Generated Haikyuu Character #56: Matsushima Tsuyoshi
Date drawn: October 15, 2023
If not for Tsuchiyu (#54), we would've had three characters from the same team in a row which is definitely super improbable! So close, but alas, that's what happens when I'm having the names chosen randomly! Maybe it'll happen at some point with these drawings, we'll just have to wait and see!
Screenshot redraw, comparison and my thoughts under the cut!

This expression was one I definitely had to do, both because it's a fun one but also it helps me get more practice in pushing expressions! I'm getting better at it I think!

Underrated Haikyuu Teams on a Road Trip
Tsubakihara: All of them, closeted or not, are swifties. They blast Taylor Swift most of ride and scream the lyrics. At some point, Maruyama and Teradomari start arguing about Star Wars or Star Trek being the better franchise, but nobody listens. Kakugawa: Everyone gets hungry 10 minutes into the drive, and Komaki, the one in the driver's seat, is screaming at Asamushi for spilling Miso Soup in his car, while also screaming at other drivers because his road rage is bad when he's stressed. Ohgiminami: Oyasu and Towada are arguing over shotgun when Towada obviously called it, Akimiya's stressing out because he's driving while trying to keep things from going to hell in his car, Tazawa and Moritake are brawling over the aux cord, Natsuse is ugly crying for some unknown reason, Yokote started some beef with a trucker in another lane and is trying to jump out of the window, and Karamatsu is holding him back. Shinzen: Ōtaki decides to drive because she knows good and well that they'd end up in a ditch if she didn't, Ogano spots Ubugawa out the window and is screaming at Gōra from across the road, Shimafu is trying to pull Ogano away from the window, Naguri is screaming at Kodama for no reason, Kodama is crying because he doesn't like being yelled at, Chigaya is calling his boyfriend, who's team is screaming to Taylor Swift, and Akatani and Yoshikawa are controlling the aux cord and playing the Arctic Monkey's Humbug album, which Naguri is also screaming about. Ubugawa: Gōra nearly rear-ends a car in front of them while screaming at Ogano from across the road, Miyanoshita is climbing over everyone to wave at Ōtaki, Yukawa and Nanasawa are playing Nicki Minaj on the aux, Nakagawa is trying to calm Gōra down from the back seat, Ashiya and Isehara are sharing snacks, and Sengoku is listening to calming music through his headphones and ignoring everyone. Wakutani: Matsushima, who just got his driver's liscense, has taken the wheel and is freaking out, Hanayama is being a backseat driver, Nakashima is trying to keep Kawatabi from playing shitty rap on the aux, Naruko is badgering Nakashima about stopping to eat, Shiroishi is getting car sick and about to vomit all over Hanayama's new clothes, and Akiu is sleeping through the yelling and reckless driving.

Turning Heads (a Haikyuu fanfic by hoperenae)
PREVIOUS — SERIES MASTERLIST — NEXT
PART 24- The Other Side
The cool October morning breeze brushed my hair away from my face as I stepped out my front door and into the street, my brother right behind me. We walked to school in silence, both nervous and reflecting on how far we’d come in the last couple of months.
It had been two months since the Miyagi Preliminaries. Two months since we beat Ohgi Minami and Kakugawa, the two meter guy. We had honed our skills and grown closer as a team, but nothing could be done about the inevitable nerves we all likely felt going into the Miyagi Qualifiers for Nationals.
The bus ride to Sendai City Gymnasium was quiet, too, even though everyone was wide awake. I sat next to Yacchi who, despite being a manager, looked more pale and anxious than any of the players.
Our first match of the day was against Johzenji High, the party school. Their carefree and fun nature made them unpredictable, but we managed to pool our new strengths together and win.
Wakutani was next, and we didn’t know what to expect. We quickly learned that their captain was very much the pillar of strength for their team, keeping everyone’s spirits up, but we had our own strong captain.
About halfway through the first set, we were neck-and-neck with them. During one rally, our spike got blocked, but Daichi scrambled to pick it up. Nishinoya managed to keep it in the air, and I turned away to prepare for the next attack. And then…the room fell silent.
I turned back to find Daichi and Tanaka on the ground. Tanaka was leaning over Daichi who wasn’t moving. My breath caught in my throat as I raced to my big brother’s side. I fell to my knees and choked back a sob.
“Daichi!” I screamed. Nothing. “Daichi!” Finally, he groaned softly and slowly lifted his head. I felt someone’s hand on my back but shrugged it off.
“Arya, give him some space.” It was Asahi’s voice that shook me from my shock. I raised myself onto one knee as I helped my brother stand up.
“Sawamura-kun!” Takeda said as he made his way to us. “Do you know where you are right now?”
“Uhh, Sendai City Gymnasium,” Daichi replied, putting a hand to his cheek and wincing. There was a trickle of blood coming from his mouth. “I’m ok, really. I can still play.” With that, he spat a tooth out of his mouth.
“You need to go to the infirmary,” Takeda insisted. “Have them check you out to make sure you don’t have a concussion.” Daichi nodded sadly and Shimizu began to walk with him.
“Little sis,” Daichi called over his shoulder. “Hold down the fort while I’m gone.” He smiled sadly, and I fought back tears as I nodded.
I finally understood what it felt like. When I got knocked unconscious back in middle school, I had no awareness of what everyone else was doing or feeling at the time. When I came to, I felt guilty for causing everyone so much pain. But now I knew what it felt like to be on the other side. The worry, the unknown, the waiting; it was unbearable. I was drowning in it. How was I supposed to play without my brother? How was Karasuno supposed to play without our captain?
“Arya-san.” Nishinoya put a hand on my shoulder. “He’s gonna be ok. He doesn’t seem dizzy or disoriented, so he’ll be back before we know it. All we can do now is win for him.”
I nodded shyly and wiped the tears that had escaped my eyes. Tanaka marched over to me and bowed before me.
“Arya,” he choked out. “I’m so sorry. I should have seen that Daichi was going for the ball.”
I put my hands on his face and pulled his gaze up to me. “Hey, it’s ok. It’s all gonna be ok.” I gave him a half-smile. Tanaka freaking out weirdly made me feel calmer. “Let’s win this, ok?” He nodded firmly.
I’ll be the first to admit, it was hard without Daichi. Ennoshita was subbed in, and after the initial nerves wore off, we started to gain our rhythm back. We took the first set, but they took the second from us. I was feeling anxious and distracted, constantly eyeing the gym doors for Daichi’s return. Half my spikes were blocked out, and I wasn’t using my head to strategize. I knew I was going to cost us the game if I kept that up, but I didn’t know how to get my head on straight.
The score was 24-23, match point for us. Kageyama tossed to me, but it was a little too high, so I panicked and flailed. The ball still went over, but now it was Wakutani’s turn for a counterattack.
“Arya!” Ennoshita called from behind me. “Don’t forget how far you’ve come!”
It was like being woken from a daydream. The fog in my brain disappeared, and I took a deep breath. Ennoshita was right, I’d come too far and worked too hard to let it end here. I steeled myself for the next attack. Hinata went up to block their attack, but it still made it through. Ennoshita dove forward to receive it and sent it back to Kageyama.
“Kageyama!” I screamed as loud as I could. He turned his head to me, saw the look of pure determination on my face, and grinned. I ran, jumped against two blockers, and spiked a perfect cross-shot, just like Bokuto taught me.
The gymnasium erupted in cheers, and my teammates swarmed around me with praise. For a brief moment, I forgot to worry about my brother. All I felt was pure bliss and pride.
After gathering up our things, we began to leave the gym. Leaning in the doorway with a sheepish grin on his face was my older brother.
“I guess you guys didn’t need me after all,” he said, running a hand through his hair. I raced forward and threw my arms around his neck.
“I’m so glad you’re ok,” I cried into his shoulder. I felt him tense up and dialed it back a bit. When I pulled away, it was not pain etched on his face, but pride.
“I saw that last point,” he said with a grin. “I don’t think anyone will underestimate you anymore, kid.”

୨୧ ⠀ : ⠀ NOTES ON⠀ ——⠀ wakutani minami high school⠀ . . .
wakutani minami high school is canonically one of the top four schools in miyagi, which also makes it one of the powerhouse schools. in my mind, it's not as rich or prestigious on its own, unlike shiratorizawa or aoba johsai, but it shines in its various after school programs. key one being: its volleyball team!
from what we can gather, it's at its strongest now, with takeru as the captain, but it's also always had a strong foundation. ukai calls them the nekoma of miyagi, ⅋ i think this is a nickname that its probably had for a while, especially since grandpa ukai has been coaching karasuno for some time as well.
rankings wise: shiratorizawa is first, guaranteed by its prestige ⅋ funding, but i think the ranks of the other powerhouse schools tend to fluctuate. even if shiratorizawa won't hold practice matches with wakutani ... the other schools will!
aoba johsai —— wakutani struggles to win against them consistently, but they have won several matches, either in practice or in tournaments. johzenji —— they struggled against johzenji up until okudaku left; with terushima as the captain ( ⅋ before karasuno knocked some sense into him ), wakutani ended up dealing with them much better. date tech —— most matches end in a draw in my opinion, or very close for both sides; i think that with date tech's defense being what it is, ⅋ wakutani's receives being what they are, they're constantly struggling to win against each other. their win/lose rates against each other are very similar!
despite this, i think wakutani has rarely, if ever, made it to nationals. while the school is a big deal in miyagi, outside of the prefecture ... it kind of has nothing to its name. i think that the only reason that they have any recognition outside of it is because they're called the nekoma of miyagi by ukai, ⅋ probably by grandpa ukai before him.
regardless, i can see grandpa ukai probably mentioning to nekomata that there's a school similar to them in miyagi—— i like to think that this has caused several practice matches to be scheduled between nekoma ⅋ wakutani. i think their relationship was come ⅋ gone after the coaches retired ( ⅋ came back ) but they still know of each other! i like to think that during nekoma's round robin of practice matches in miyagi in season one, wakutani was one of the schools they went up against.
( i also think that, considering takeru's reputation as the potential next little giant, it causes nekoma to keep a keener eye on them. after all, that's what hinata wants to be, so who's going to win in the end? )
after the spring nationals, the rankings definitely get a shakeup. ( at this point, i think it should be considered a total free for all. ) afterwards, wakutani adds karasuno to their list of schools they regularly play practice matches against! though, they never make it to nationals in hinata ⅋ kageyama's time, i like to think that they made it at least once. they have a huge group of alumni willing to come back and teach them, after all!

You get to play switcheroo and take one player and out it into a different school, who do you choose?
Only one...hm 🤔... There are so many ways this could go...
Oikawa could go to literally any school and succeed, so that's kind of a boring answer.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, moving Kyoutani Mad Dog to Kurasano like Suga mentioned could end up with so many funny arguments between he and the first years. He and Tsukishima end up playing together post time skip, but I feel like they both did a lot of growing up before then. Tadashi would be very intent on defending Tsuki's honor whenever Kyoutani bad mouthed him. There's no way King of the Court Kageyama would know how to handle the Mad Dog. Hinata would respect how powerful of a player he is but he would give as good as he got insult wise from him. And all that only if he and Tanaka didn't murder each other or get expelled from school for fighting because I cannot see them getting along at all.
Another more interesting option would be to strengthen a team Kurasano had a difficult time beating with a player that gave them a hard time.
I would give the two meter tall Hyakuzawa to Wakutani Minami. Kurasano found a way to work around Hyakuzawa's height, and they struggled to beat the well rounded team that is Wakutani. Adding Hyakuzawa to a strong team like Wakutani's would support him and such a skilled captain as Takeru would be able to bring out the best in him while not solely relying on him. I feel like that combination would really give, not only Kurasano, but all the teams in the Miyagi prefecture a run for their money.

Ranking the Haikyuu Openings
Haikyuu!! was my first ever sports anime/manga I consumed, way back in 2015. Immediately after season 2 concluded, I caught up to the manga and read the entire Shiratorizawa match after being so hyped about it after the amazing Aoba Johsai match. Ever since then, I diligently read every new chapter weekly from 2015 till 2020 where it finally concluded with the controversial ending to say the least.
Haikyuu will always have a special place in my heart even though it might not be my favourite sports anime/manga, and to show my never ending appreciation for this piece of art I will be ranking all 7 openings of the Haikyuu anime because I love all the songs.
7. Opening 6: Burnout Syndromes - PHOENIX (Haikyuu: To The Top)
Tumblr media
The highly anticipated national tournament arc of Haikyuu was finally released 4 years after season 3. Burnout Syndromes returned with another banger of an opening with PHOENIX and they didn't fail to disappoint the long history of amazing openings this anime had to offer.
However, it was the weakest opening in the entire anime I feel as it was lacking in the hype department. I personally didn't feel as amped up and excited after listening to this opening compared to the others and it's probably because I don't think any of the lyrics or instrumentals were as catchy or memorable. It was still an amazing opening however and it's still worth a listen.
6. Opening 7: Super Beaver - Toppakou (Haikyuu: To The Top)
Tumblr media
One word: SEISEIDOU!!!
To be frank this is the only season of Haikyuu I didn't watch because I've already read the manga but I still went out of my way to listen to it multiple times. The chorus is really catchy but it just doesn't have the same emotional impact as the other openings for me (nostalgia factor lol). Objectively speaking it might be a better song and opening than the next one but my feelings and emotions towards the other openings are still much higher than this. Still an amazing opening!!
5. Opening 2: Sukima Switch - Ah Yeah!! (Season 1)
Tumblr media
Sukima Switch and sports anime do not sound right in the same sentence but this opening still works really REALLY well. The second opening in the entire anime had a lot to fill after the legendary first opening, and it was a good attempt to say the least.
I think this might be most people's least favourite opening due to how slow and "boring" it might come off but it came alongside one of Haikyuu's emotional peaks - Karasuno losing to Aoba Johsai. I think the slower pace of the song represents the journey of the Karasuno team and rather than being a culmination of their journey, this loss was just a stepping stone. I appreciate the direction the opening was going for and I feel it's highly underrated.
4. Opening 3: Spyair - I'M A BELIEVER (Season 2)
Tumblr media
If this list was ranking the most hype Haikyuu opening songs, this would be number 1 by a milestone. In a vacuum, the instrumentals and vocals are notched to an 11, and for good reason as well.
Similar to the second opening, this opening also represents a part of Karasuno's journey - their triumphant return to glory by working on their mistakes and shortcomings in the training camp arc. I realise this might be most people's favourite openings, but the other remaining 3 openings have more emotional impact for myself and that's why I've ranked them ahead of this one.
3. Opening 4: Burnout Syndromes - Fly High!! (Season 2)
Tumblr media
This particular screenshot of team Shiratorizawa lived in my head rent free and basically carries this opening to a third place in my personal list LMAO. Whenever I watched this opening before the Shiratorizawa match was adapted I was filled with hype and excitement of the developments to come after the Aoba Johsai match.
Anyways back to the rest of the opening - IT WAS AMAZING, especially the shots of Aoba Johsai, Johzenji and Wakutani Minami at the beginning hinting at Karasuno's opponents in the Spring Tournament. The other detail that was amazing was Daichi's injuries being added onto the opening in the sequence where Karasuno receives Oikawa's spike after his injuries occurred in the Wakutani Minami match. It really showed a level of care to the small details which isn't present in other animes alike. However, there are two more openings which I feel are better.
2. Opening 5: Burnout Syndromes: Hikari Are!
Tumblr media
Objectively speaking, I think this might be the all time best opening in the entire series. The first 30 seconds alone (the sequence where Karasuno stands before a mountain which then turns into an eagle and Ushijima before the vocalist shouts HIKARI AREEEEEEE) stands above most sports anime openings I've seen due to its impeccable animation and sound.
The match up against Shiratorizawa is Haikyuu's definitive final boss match that's comparable to matches in other sports anime such as Seirin Vs Rakuzan in Kuroko No Basket and Seigaku Vs Rikkaidai in Prince Of Tennis and it does NOT disappoint. A match of this importance and caliber of course needs an amazing opening to go alongside and I can't think of a song and a sequence better than this one. It fits the purpose and direction this season and match was heading towards and my god it was satisfying to watch every week when it was airing. It is still however my SECOND favourite opening in Haikyuu.
1. Opening 1: Spyair - Imagination!!
Tumblr media
It's 2015, I was 13 years old and I had just begun watching anime in general. I was talking to the first girl I've ever liked in my life about anime and she brought up Haikyuu!! and how great it was. I was skeptical because before this I had only watched the basic starter kit anime like Dragon Ball, Code Geass etc and was wondering how the hell an anime about volleyball was going to be any good, especially since I have no idea what volleyball was about. I logged onto Kissanime and searched up Haikyuu anyways to try it out and the first thing that played after the first episode (which was basically the prologue) was this opening sequence.
From that moment, I was hooked. It began my years of addiction to anime in general and cultivated my love for the sports anime/manga genre. Watching Haikyuu legitimately changed my life forever as it made me want to try hard in an endeavour I was pursuing competitively, which was Scrabble. Yes, kinda lame that I used to play this board game competitively but this anime show filled me with so much motivation and passion which ultimately made me REALLY good at it (of course it was the friends and memories I made along the way that mattered).
The fact that this anime was so impactful to my life, and it all started from this very opening. Everything about it fills me with nostalgia and gratitude for making me the person I am today. I might be coming off as a little melodramatic but it REALLY did have an impact in shaping me to the person I am today. Therefore, Imagination is my favourite Haikyuu opening as it started it all for me.
In conclusion, I love Haikyuu and all of its openings. I have not seen another anime series that has such a high level of consistency when it comes to the quality of its openings and I implore everyone who reads this to this point to give it a re-listen and appreciate how good all of these opening sequences and songs are. (This took me an hour to write)

I'd also want to add
Iron Wall team defeated the main character's team the previous year: Seiho, Seirin | Dateko, Karasuno
Raising a player's morale by saying there's a girl: during the Seirin vs Josei | Karasuno vs Wakutani Minami
the more I watch KnB the more it reminds me of Haikyu lmao
character with a bright colored hair and their special ability is jumping very high/people are surprised at how high they can jump: Kagami Taiga | Hinata Shoyo
Plays a practice match against one of the strong teams, said strong teams have powerful players that are popular among women: Kaijo Kise | Seijoh Oikawa
A strong player returns to the team: Teppei | Asahi, Nishinoya
Team is not at 100% power when they don't matchup well: Kagami, Kuroko | Hinata, Kageyama
Team with iron wall defense: Seiho | Dateko
They have apparently the strongest lineup for that year but gets defeated in the end anyways: Rakuzan | Shiratorizawa
The popular strong player from the strong team they had a practice match with is always hanging around their well-grounded/ level-headed teammate who says "I'll punch you/ I'll kick you" during/after they punch/kick: Kasamatsu, Kise | Iwaizumi, Oikawa
A very good captain that's actually pretty scary: Hyuga | Sawamura
Tall people with soft hearts: Teppei | Asahi

Randomly Generated Haikyuu Character #55: Nakashima Takeru
Date drawn: October 13, 2023
Takeru is such an interesting character and the Wakunan game is also really interesting, season 2 is definitely my favorite of everything that's been animated so far and I'm not sure if anything will manage to top it! Even when I don't feel like a full rewatch of the series or even just the season, I think I've watched this match in particular at least a couple dozen times
Screenshot redraw, comparison and my thoughts under the cut!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I quite like how this one turned out! Not the most impressive or technically complicated ones but simple drawings have their place and there's nothing wrong with that!
Also I think I did a good job on the hair this time! I've said before that I find hairstyles close to the head more difficult to draw, mainly because you really have to make sure the back of the head is shaped correctly, but I don't have any issues with how it turned out in this drawing!

Was scrolling through my liked posts for some BroccoliFish that i liked before and I found a wakutani incorrect quote. Then I looked in the tags and one of them was "Incorrect Wakutani Quotes" or smth and I was like "WOW DOES THAT ACTUALLY EXIST??"
It doesn't.
I was welcomed by complete and utter disappointment upon clicking that tag
I'm gonna have to create ALL the Wakunan incorrect quotes now, huh?
Tsubakihara too?
Yk what, I'll take Shinzen and Ubugawa while we're at it, no one else is gonna want those ones
Kakugawa? Sure
Ohgiminami? I'll make it work
This is a threat. I will make incorrect quotes for all the teams you people have been too lazy to acknowledge.
