MĂ„neskin: ‘People are going to talk s**t about you. It’s part of the game’
From X Factor to Eurovision to interstellar fame, the Italian rockers have turned not being cool into a superpower (posted on 21.01.2023)
Down a video link from Rome, Gen Z’s favourite rock band, MĂ„neskin, are making enthusiastic thumbs-up gestures. “Yeah, yeah, yeah,” says guitarist Thomas Raggi, in his rich and rococo Italian accent. “We’re gonna vote for Ireland,” agrees frontman Damiano David. “Go for it.”
The Irish Times has just canvassed MĂ„neskin’s opinion about Public Image Limited singer John Lydon’s ambition to represent Ireland at Eurovision 2023. The former Johnny Rotten wants to boldly go where no punk iconoclast has previously ventured by following in the footsteps of Dana, Johnny Logan and Dustin the Turkey.
Johnny Rotten singing for Ireland is, in theory, an absurd proposition. But so is the idea of an Italian rock band in sex-dungeon dungarees conquering Eurovision with lyrics such as “you better hold on to your balls”. Which is exactly what MĂ„neskin achieved in Rotterdam in 2021 with the zinging Zitti e Buoni (“Shut Up and Behave”).
Indeed it is arguable Lydon might not have even considered Eurovision were it not for MĂ„neskin. Squeezed into unforgiving leather trousers, tattoos on proud display, they gatecrashed Rotterdam with red eyes and flared nostrils. In doing so, they refashioned Europe’s pre-eminent cheesefest in their own image. Eurovision has been a lot of things in the past 20 years. It took MĂ„neskin to make it cool.
Since then they haven’t looked back. MĂ„neskin have won Best Rock Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards, supported The Rolling Stones in Las Vegas and covered Elvis’s I Can Dream for Baz Luhrmann’s hit Presley biopic.
Now, they are about to open the most exciting chapter of their career to date with the release on January 19th of their fantastic third album, Rush! It captures the group at their most riotous – so much so that it comes as a shock to learn it was produced by Taylor Swift/Britney Spears collaborator Max Martin. At moments they sound like Queen trapped in a Fellini movie. Elsewhere, they’re straight-ahead punk. At one point they appear to be channelling Rage Against The Machine – hardly a surprise since RATM guitarist Tom Morello guests on new single Gossip.
“We’re trying to play with our own rules. And not the rules that in the past five to 10 years have dominated the music industry,” says David (24), earrings glinting in the harsh studio light.
MĂ„neskin don’t claim to be reinventing the wheel. Still, they are well aware of how much they stand out in a musical landscape dominated by pop.
“We go on TV shows and play rock music. Which is uncommon. We do analogue music, which is uncommon. We are a four-piece band,” says David, radiating lounge-lizard charisma. “There are a lot of things in how we create or project and how we show ourselves
I wouldn’t say it’s unique. It isn’t anything that hasn’t been done before. But it’s unique in today’s environment.”
MĂ„neskin have come along at the perfect moment. Mainstream rock, comatose for a least a decade, is crying out for a recharge. Now the status quo has been upended by a group who make headbanging riffs and cock-a-hoop bass solos seem as fresh and daring as Harry Styles in a dress.
“A lot of people love us because we are showing them something that feels new,” says David. “For a lot of kids, rock music is new.”
It isn’t just the kids. Iggy Pop cameos on MĂ„neskin’s 2021 single, I Wanna Be Your Slave. At Coachella last year, Jared Leto sought them out for a selfie. Chris Martin insisted David have lunch with him on that same trip. People don’t simply like MĂ„neskin – they adore them.
“We get messages where people say, ‘my five-year-old is now obsessed with Rage Against The Machine because he listened to your song,’” says David. “Basically if you want to make it simple: we sound new for many different reasons – even though we are not new.”
Not all new fans are as welcome. After the Eurovision, French president Emmanuel Macron suggested MĂ„neskin be disqualified because of the “fake cocaine” controversy [see below]. One of those rallying to their defence was right-wing politician Giorgia Meloni. She was subsequently appointed prime minister of Italy. The musicians weren’t aware of her intervention on their behalf before The Irish Times brings it up, and would rather Meloni keep her opinions to herself.
“I don’t want support from them,” says Raggi.
MĂ„neskin’s music isn’t explicitly political. But they know where they stand. And it isn’t with Meloni’s populist Brothers of Italy party. Following her election, David took to Instagram to lament Italy’s drift to the right. “Today is a sad day for my country,” he wrote, linking to a story in newspaper La Repubblica.
“I would do it again. One hundred per cent,” he says, shrugging. “I don’t even know what to say. It’s hard not to say something offending [about Meloni and her supporters]. It’s clear that we’re making the same mistakes that we made in the past. Maybe we didn’t study the story well enough. Our generation is not going to make the same mistakes, hopefully. Italy has a very good taste for old-fashioned things. It doesn’t surprise me,” he continues, referring to Italy’s history of supporting right-wing politicians.
The band formed in Rome in 2016. David, Raggi and bassist Victoria De Angelis [who is under the weather and sitting out the interview] knew each other from high school. They met Ethan Torchio, from the suburb of Frosinone, after advertising for a drummer on Facebook.
De Angelis came up with their name. “MĂ„neskin” is Danish for moonlight. The bassist suggested it, in part as tribute to her Danish mother who died when her daughter was 15. From there they had a rapid ascent. A stint busking in central Rome was followed by a tilt at X Factor Italy, where they blitzed their way to the final with molten versions of Somebody Told Me by The Killers and Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand. Then came Eurovision and the global stage.
MĂ„neskin are great fun. But the energy rippling through their music is interwoven with a fascination with the dark side of human nature. Gossip, for instance, interrogates the American dream and finds it wanting. “Welcome to the city of lies/ Where everything’s got a price,” they sing. They also take on Christianity. The Eurovision winner Zitti e Buoni contains the marvellously baroque lyric, “I wrote above a tombstone: ‘In my house there is no God.’”
“None of us is very Catholic. We don’t have that much influence. We have the opposite influence,” says David. “We feel the weight of the church on society, on our country. We see how late we are on many, many things because of the influence of the church. We have this hateful relationship.”
He pauses, at pains not to be misinterpreted. “I would like to make it clear that [MĂ„neskin’s problems] are with the institution of the church. Nothing against religion. It’s a beautiful thing. The institution of the church and the money-laundering and all that
 I’ll shut up.”
Eurovision was a baptism for MĂ„neskin. However, their coming-out party threatened to turn sour amid an ersatz scandal over David supposedly taking cocaine. A photograph of the singer leaning over the table in the green room was seized on as evidence of illicit drug use.
The image was beamed around the world. There were calls – from Macron and others – for the group to be stripped of their title. Which is what prompted Meloni’s unwelcome intervention. David passed a drugs test and was cleared of any inappropriate behaviour. By then, though, MĂ„neskin were all over the front pages and the talk of the internet. Did they fear they had blown it?
“We were laughing,” says David. “But we were pissed off. We were not worried about anything. The thing that disturbed me was that we had done something meaningful and great. We were a four-piece rock band from 20 to 22 years old who were breaking the hugest TV show in Europe. This was being overshadowed by some assholes who were not good at accepting the loss. I was pissed off that they had the power to do it. And that people were letting them do it.”
They made peace with the controversy by accepting that it was merely a downside of success. Once you achieve a certain level of celebrity, people will come after you.
“We know that being famous and winning and having a good career leads to criticism,” says David. “People are going to wait for you to make some mistake and talk s**t about you. It’s part of the game. You have to be stronger than it. If you are able to make irony about it and laugh about it
 It’s kind of a superpower.”
There have been other controversies. Their performance of Supermodel from the 2022 MTV VMA Awards was heavily edited to conceal De Angelis’s exposed breast (though the cameras still caught David’s bare-bummed chap trousers).
“They have weird censorship rules,” says David of MTV and American broadcasting in general. “You can show guns and people dancing on huge dicks on stage. You cannot show a female nipple. I think it was worse for them than for us. We did our performance. They showed how it doesn’t make sense – their politics.”
Rush! copperfastens MĂ„neskin’s status as the most exciting force in mainstream rock. It confirms, too, that they are magpies, with David drawing on everyone from Freddie Mercury to Kurt Cobain. And from Bono. U2 are adored in Italy and David says that their influence has seeped into his band.
“U2 have been so big it’s impossible not to be influenced. Indirectly, you’re influenced. The idea of the big frontman and blah blah blah. I think that indirectly it has been very strong. Also, putting the political into the music
they really changed that. Made it more common.”
The comparison goes beyond music. U2 were never much bothered about being cool. They never went out of fashion because they weren’t particularly fashionable to begin with. The same is true of MĂ„neskin. From X Factor to Eurovision to interstellar fame, they have turned not being cool into a superpower, as David acknowledges.
“It’s a bit insecure to have this mindset [of wanting to be credible]. The idea that if you go to a pop environment, you’re not rock any more. It’s insecurity. Fortunately we were confident enough of our music and our identity to not think a stage or a TV show could change us. In fact, it didn’t happen. We brought ourselves everywhere we went. It was always the right thing to do. It is the only advice we could give to anybody. Bring yourself to the table. Don’t try to conform.”

I really loved this finale. It felt like excellent story telling that really connected back to the pilot and came full circle in a beautiful way.
Not gonna lie, I wish Max had stayed but the way it played out really did make sense for his story. And I was beyond happy that he was making Luna a priority while not giving up who he is (like he was practically forced to do in London). I was so relieved with Iggy and Martin, I felt like they were purposely putting me through torture with that one. I think before Wildwin, Iggy x Martin was definitely my OTP of the show, so it was nice to see their story come to a wonderful close. I was so glad that Lauren reunited with her sister, that Floyd got the family he wanted, and that if Wilder had to stay behind, that she got to take over for Max with New Amsterdam. It was an amazing end for a lovely show and I couldn't be more grateful, especially with the Luna twist (my God, talk about spectacular writing, they really did close every layer up minus the one they planned to leave open). I've been watching since day 1 and that to me was definitely a finale worth celebrating.
I know maybe some might not care for the open Wildwin ending, but personally, I loved it. I think Max made his decision back a couple of episodes ago and I think that was really powerful. Despite Max's leaving, what happened between these two and how they left things just felt right to me and open with possibility like the showrunner says here.
You know, when Sharpwin started being hinted at in the show, I despised it. Not because Max and Helen didn't have chemistry, not because Ryan and Freema weren't enjoyable to watch on screen together, but because it felt as if the show quickly killed Georgia off to do fanservice. (and if you've been following me here for a while, you know by now how much I hate that LOL) But I tried my best to give it a shot when it went canon. Despite loathing Helen's response with "I should have never let you in" while Max was happy and glowing, completely in love with her and wanting to show her. But regardless, I slowly came to appreciate it, especially after Helen's speech on the bridge. They had finally showed to the audience, in my opinion, just how real it was for both of them, why it could actually work, and just why Max was making this move. So I was on board. I rooted for the little family they were creating. Then I really couldn't stand it when it became obvious that Max was basically forced into giving up everything in order to make Helen happy by following her to London, though you could tell her heart wasn't fully in it. (I had no idea what was going on bts with Freema's decision to leave the show btw)
For me, not to sound harsh in regards to Max, the moment she jilted him wasn't what had me angry at the pairing again. (that's not to diminish what happened or what he went through) It was the fact that she allowed Luna to call her 'Mummy', allowed Max to keep telling Luna that she was indeed her mom and that they were going to be a family, and then did what she did. Here's the thing: cold feet, I get it. And Iggy was right, Helen was going through A LOT. But doing that to Luna and basically abandoning her...that's unforgivable in my book. Luna had already lost one mom that she never knew and Helen knew that. Tbf to her, she had been hesitant about the mom thing at first when Max went full throttle, but she eventually went with it and formed a full bond with Luna as her mom. And then she just disappears (again, I get it, Freema left the show) from the kid's life, not even making sure she's okay, regardless of where she left things with her dad. Unforgivable.
So for me, Wildwin when it first started being hinted at was such a nice contrast. Don't get me wrong, I love the friends-to-lovers trope, the slow burns, and the whole healing process from a broken heart & falling in love with "what's good for you" but Ryan and Sandra definitely had chemistry, Wilder was there for Max, and I was so glad when the writers went with it. And I was thrilled when Max chose Wilder over Helen, his future vs his past like they say in this article. (and that shot of Luna with Wilder was adorable btw!)
But saying all of that, I'm more than okay with where they left things with Wildwin. I would have been massively disappointed if Max left to find Helen again, taking Luna with him, breaking it off with Wilder in the process. I'm okay with staying open-ended on this one because it leaves things open for possibilities. And while we got closure on the other characters' stories, if you think about it, we really got the theme of "open possibility" with all of them as well. Iggy and Martin have started a new beginning; Lauren and her sister are starting a new beginning together; Floyd is starting a new beginning with his relationship along with his family embracing his dad being around again. And of course, Luna was given her own new beginning as well, which was all tied beautifully to the moments these people chose to become doctors.
I just wanted to gush a little over it. I just really appreciated that they finished out this story right and didn't fall short on anything while attempting to bring it full circle while also bringing it to a close. I will miss these characters but damn if there won't be a rewatch in my future at some point lol.
What a fantastic show!

Song Suggestions Wanted
My 16yr old (they/he) is currently in a youth residential treatment program after a psycotic break, planning to kill himself, and a stay in a psych ward. While they still can't have their phone they are now able to have a mp3 player. I'm putting together some playlists to put on the one I bought that's being delivered later today.
They asked for music I'm into as well as stuff I know they like but going through my & their liked songs a lot of it is too angst ridden and/or depressing. (It's almost like depression runs in the family.)
So I ask ~ what songs have helped you get through hard times? He's got an eclectic music taste so any genre is welcome.

NEW AMSTERDAM REACTION
This reaction is for the season 5, third episode titled "Big Day" which originally aired on October 4, 2022. The episode was written by Laura Valdivia and directed by Nestor Carbonell. Spoilers ahead!
Tumblr media
Between The Rookie and 9-1-1 and now this latest episode of New Amsterdam, this has been a wildly shocking and borderline horrific week in television. This week's new episode started with our favorite doctors responding to a catastrophe at a wedding and by the end of the episode, I, as a viewer, felt the strong urge to go bathe in bleach to cleanse myself of the ickiness I felt when certain revelations were brought to light. But hey, I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's pick up where we last left off.
Reynolds meets with his mom and siblings to talk about his dad who he believes is bipolar. His sister throws some epic shade at him when she brings up his failed three-way relationship with Dr. Malvo and Dr. Baptiste. Hearing another character talk about that cringy storyline makes it seem even more ludicrous that Reynolds was even a part of it. The rest of Reynolds' family aren't as concerned about the man who abandoned them decades ago as he is, so he decides to talk to his dad alone.
Tumblr media
The thing that frustrates me most about Reynolds is that he is a brilliant cardiologist but when it comes to his personal life, he is dumb as a box of rocks. He leads too often with his head and not his head which is why he ends up investing his time and emotions in fruitless scenarios. I get that he wants to have a relationship with his dad, but he doesn't seem to get that the man who is his father is a dumpster fire of a human being. Hopefully Reynolds got the message loud and clear at the end of this episode when his father used his undiagnosed bipolar disorder as an excuse for his past behavior. I hope we don't spend the rest of the final season watching Reynolds pour energy into this rather pointless relationship.
Speaking of pointless relationships, Bloom is still living with her sister. I still don't get why she can't get a hotel somewhere or another apartment - I'm sure she makes quite a bit of coin running an emergency room - but for now she is content to be roommates with her estranged sister. What bothers me most about Bloom's relationship with her sister is that it's codependent as hell. On top of that, they're both addicts and I'm worried that Bloom is going to throw her sobriety out the window for the sake of rekindling her relationship with her sister.
Tumblr media
Before I talk about Max and Iggy, let's talk about the main plot of the episode. An explosion at a wedding lands several members of the wedding, including the bride and groom, and a few guests in the ER. We have an older couple who sustain injuries as a result of all the chaos. Reynolds works on the wife who has inhaled several shards of glass that shred her insides and Bloom aids the husband who ended up with his wife's stiletto heel in his back after she nearly trampled him. Honestly I was rooting for both these characters to survive their injuries ... until I found out what was really going on at the end of the episode.
Then we have the groom who was close to the explosion. When he arrives in the ER has lost a lot of blood. The groom's blood type is very rare, Lutheran B negative to be exact, and Max and Wilder scramble to find a supply of it. The closest supply is in Toronto but Customs won't allow it cross the border. With Seattle out of the question, the two doctors learn of a donor in Bermuda so they hop on a flight to the Caribbean with Ben to track down the anonymous donor. After some clever detective work on the part of Wilder, they get the address of the donor and head to her home. She turns them a way because she is tired of giving and giving and all she wants to do is be present for the birth of her grandchild. For the second episode in a row, Wilder guilts a patient into doing what she wants them to do which I don't know how I feel about her weaponizing her deafness but that's a blog for another day.  The donor shows up at the airport and agrees to head to New York so that she can donate blood to the dying groom.
Tumblr media
Then we have a woman and her daughter who were present at the wedding. The little girl is in a catatonic state presumably because of the horrific event she witnessed at the wedding. Bloom enlists Iggy to help and he suggests that the girl be admitted to the psychiatric ward. Iggy spends time with the patient and uses some toys to help her act out the scene that happened at the wedding. When Iggy asks about the bride, it is revealed that this little girl is the bride which means the groom who was dying in the ER was the man she was being married off to.
Naturally all of the doctors are disgusted and the episode does a great job of highlighting how as healthcare providers, they can't be selective about whose lives they save. Iggy talks about how state law makes it legal for the little girl to be married off to an adult man. Honestly now I'm disgusted as well. All of the patients they saved this episode, including the older couple and the groom, were all a part of this child wedding and the only person to object to this awful, awful situation was the little girl's brother who is the one who caused the explosions. I can't believe something like this could happen in this country although a part of me thinks I shouldn't be too surprised because there's a lot of messed up stuff that happens in this country, a lot of it affecting the most vulnerable of the population.
Tumblr media
At the end of the episode, Iggy heads to his old home where Martin and the kids are living. When Martin reminds him that it's his turn to be with the kids, Iggy breaks down in front of him and asks if he can see the kid. Martin, of course, obliges his request. I still have hope for Iggy and Martin. I don't think they're a perfect couple but then again, no couple is perfect. I'm hoping by the end of the season they work through their issues and get back together.
Max at the end of the episode, has a moment with Wilder. They are really pushing this romance and I'd honestly feel a little bit better about it if Max hadn't just gotten out of an engagement. Max has bounced from one woman to another. First it was Georgia and then he went to Helen and now he's moved on to Wilder. Max, you need to take some time for yourself. Work on yourself for a bit. Make peace with things and then maybe you can pursue romance. Another sweet moment of the episode is when Max returns home and asks if he can stay with Luna in her room. I imagine being a parent, after witnessing something so twisted and awful happen to another child, you just want to be close to your own.
Tumblr media
That's the end of the episode. Overall, I thought it was a well done episode. I'm glad we got more hospital drama and less personal drama. I'm seriously not interested in Reynolds' daddy issues or Bloom reconciling with her sister. Oh, speaking of Bloom, where the hell is Casey? Casey's been missing in action since the season started. Bring back my Casey! Anywho, back to the episode. I thought the twist was well executed. I was really caught up in figuring out what happened at the wedding. I spent most of the episode trying to figure out where the bride was and she was there the entire time. At the end of the episode, I told my mom that when we first saw the little girl, she was dressed in white and holding a bouquet. I assumed she was the flower girl but flower girls generally carry baskets with rose petals. I still can't believe this girl's mother allowed her to be put in this situation. What's even more frustrating is that it seems like none of these people that were treated in this episode will suffer any kind of repercussions for their vile behavior. But, I reckon that's the most realistic part of the episode. Well done, New Amsterdam. So far you've yet to disappoint. I'm excited to see what happens next week. Until next time ...

‘We’ve always been very divisive’: MĂ„neskin on fighting fascists and breakfast with Chris Martin
First The X Factor, then victory at Eurovision, now a Grammy nod: the Italian glam rockers have taken the road less ordinary on their way to worldwide fame. So long as they can be themselves, they wouldn’t have it any other way (posted on 21.01.2023)
Damiano David is bent double over a large glass table, gleefully snorting an imaginary line of cocaine. His MĂ„neskin bandmates – bassist Victoria De Angelis, guitarist Thomas Raggi and drummer Ethan Torchio – collapse in fits of laughter around their frontman, each one pretending to wipe the nonexistent powder off the table in their rented LA flat.
David is playfully reimagining the Italian rockers’ most infamous moment: hours after winning Eurovision 2021 with their pogoing glam-rock stomp Zitti e Buoni, in front of a global audience of 183 million, footage circulated of David appearing to snort something off a table in the green room. The images quickly went viral, with Emmanuel Macron reportedly calling for the band to be disqualified (France’s entry was in second place). In the end David offered to take a drug test, which cleared him of any wrongdoing; the results are still pinned proudly to his fridge at home.
“I think the view people have of us, and of me, it’s very off-target,” David says now, his usual rock star uniform – Gucci-styled 70s glam idol mixed with Rocky Horror Picture Show vamp – replaced by an oversized beige sweater and a violent cold. (Every band member is struck down with it, rendering a grey-looking Raggi almost mute.) “People think we behave like the Sex Pistols, or Mötley CrĂŒe, but we’re nothing like that,” David continues. “We’ve got more educated on the risks of drugs and how they affect your body. I don’t even drink alcohol any more.”
“At the time we got so upset about it and now we don’t give a fuck,” smiles De Angelis, the band’s most outspoken member, sat looking resplendent in an Italians Do It Better T-shirt.
David, however, is having none of it: “No, I am still upset about it, actually. I think it’s dumb to tarnish the victory at Eurovision. I think we should go back and hand flowers around.”
MĂ„neskin, despite their throwback vintage rock vibe, represent a very modern take on the rock’n’roll mythos. Prior to Eurovision – a DayGlo pop jamboree not renowned for its links to rock excess – the band gained notoriety via Italy’s version of karaoke conveyor belt The X Factor. Their origin story has led to some music purists taking umbrage at the band’s success, with their CV now including two UK Top 10 singles, more than 4bn streams, multiple world tours, a collaboration with Iggy Pop, plus a support slot with the Rolling Stones in Vegas.
“Some of the stupid comments we get are probably because of [having done The X Factor and Eurovision],” shrugs De Angelis. “People are so narrow-minded that they can’t see beyond the idea that if we went on Eurovision we must be shit. They can’t listen to our songs with an open mind and judge them based on what they really think.”
On their highly anticipated third album, Rush!, MĂ„neskin’s first since becoming one of the few new rock acts to break through globally, the band can often be found grappling not only with the speed of their ascent (hence the title), but also a complicated relationship with what rock’n’roll means in 2023. “The whole concept of rock music is not conforming to what society would love you to be,” De Angelis says. “It’s ignoring those made-up rules and being yourself. We don’t think real rock music is about these stereotypes of the sex and drugs and rock’n’roll lifestyle,” she continues. “It’s about expression and creative freedom.”
Still, Rush!, which was mainly co-produced in LA by Swedish hitmaker Max Martin, is stuffed with songs about sex, drugs and, indeed, rock’n’roll, but often with a twist. While lead single Supermodel criticises, rather than valorises, LA’s vapid party scene (“Everything [in LA] is so huge and big and wants to impress you, it’s all showing off,” sniffs De Angelis), the band confess to having enjoyed at least one A-list schmooze with Coldplay’s Chris Martin, who invited them over to his and girlfriend Dakota Johnson’s house for breakfast.
“Dakota cooked us eggs, Chris didn’t cook,” remembers Torchio.
“He was enjoying the moment,” suggests David.
Supermodel also references the band’s apparent drug of choice, cocaine, as does the frenetic Bla Bla Bla, though it largely serves as a warning of sorts, as David sings: “I’m too drunk and I can’t get hard.” “It happens when you drink too much,” the 23-year-old shrugs, ignoring his bandmates’ giggles. “Even when you haven’t had a drink. [That song] is a mixture of honesty and putting on ‘crazy guy’ shoes. [That character] says some things I would never say.”
Perhaps the best example of stereotypical rock’n’roll swagger arrives on the ludicrous Kool Kids, a punky marauder that finds David aping the spit-flecked delivery of Slowthai. “That [was written] three days after Eurovision so our feeling was: ‘Fuck off, we won and everybody has to eat our shit,’” David says. “Before Eurovision we went through a very tough year; everybody was trying to stop us doing this kind of music and doing Eurovision. Nobody believed in us. So we had this feeling of being the underdogs that won.”
That feeling has helped cement MĂ„neskin’s sibling-style bond. It’s been fostered since they formed at high school in Rome in 2016, with David, De Angelis and Raggi coming together after their various other bands didn’t work out (Torchio was later recruited via Facebook). “I remember when I started playing guitar at school, everyone was like: ‘Oh my God, you play electric guitar. Are you a lesbian?’” De Angelis says. “It’s all these stereotypes you know.” Suddenly her eyes dart around the room. “But then actually they were right,” she adds with a huge roar of laughter.
The band, named after the Danish word for moonlight (De Angelis is half-Danish), would quickly garner similar reactions across Rome for their style, which often involved every band member donning makeup. “I remember even when we were busking or playing at school parties everyone always looked at us like freaks,” says De Angelis. “This gave us even more of an attitude of wanting to tell them to shut up. Growing up and being inspired by a lot of the artists from the 70s, the glam, it showed us something we hadn’t seen.”
In 2017, the band appeared on The X Factor, eventually finishing second and landing a chart-topping album in Italy a year later. “When we went on The X Factor we were the first rock band to [appear], but we just played as if it was our own show,” De Angelis continues. “We didn’t have to change.”
While more success quickly followed in Italy, including five Top 10 singles in two years, the band say they felt a shift at home after Eurovision sent them interstellar. “We’ve always been very dividing,” David says. “There are a bunch of people that love us and are very proud of what we’re doing, and then there’s a whole other part made of conservatives and traditional rock’n’roll fans and fascists that hate us with everything they’ve got. Then there’s this conspiracy building up
 ”
Everyone at the table looks bemused.
“What?” splutters Torchio.
“Yeah, guys you have to be informed,” snaps David. “It says that we’re getting famous because we’re being paid. That we’re working with the Italian government to share this gender-fluid culture!”
“A lot of people are really proud,” De Angelis says. “But Italy is a very conservative country and they’re intimidated by the fact that someone can wear makeup or high heels or appear half-naked or not be straight. But fuck them.”
This passion for nudity caused problems last August when the band performed at the MTV VMAs, where they won best alternative video for single I Wanna Be Your Slave. While David donned a dog collar, leather chaps and buttock-revealing thong, De Angelis covered one nipple with a silver star before her top slipped down revealing the other one to be unadorned. Cue lots of hastily edited aerial shots to save everyone’s blushes. “We’re too hot for US television,” smiles De Angelis. “It’s so stupid because they want to appear so open-minded and then they get scared about a pair of nipples. There is this difference between men’s and women’s bodies and how you’re perceived and sexualised all the time. Everyone has nipples.”
“It’s very clear the different standards people have because I was literally butt-naked,” adds David.
Perhaps it’s no surprise that a band whose success was forged in controversy are now under the microscope. For David and Raggi, the band’s straight contingent, there have been accusations of queer-baiting, thanks to their penchant for sporting makeup and experimenting with a more fluid style. “There are some cases where it happens, but sometimes [the accusations are] so extreme,” says De Angelis. “It’s stupid for queer people, who should fight these stereotypes, to label it as this and create more hate. The fact [Raggi and David] are straight doesn’t mean they can’t wear makeup. Or heels.”
David agrees: “Everything me and Thomas do is always filtered by two people who are [queer]. Of course we don’t experience the same stuff, but we live every day very closely with people from the community.”
They are keen to also deflect their spotlight on to more immediately concerning issues, with Rush!’s throbbing Gasoline – performed at last September’s Global Citizen festival in New York – aimed at Putin (“How are you sleeping at night? How do you close both your eyes? Living with all of those lives on your hands?” run the lyrics.) The song, they say, is a message of support for their Ukrainian fans. Rather than shy away from politics, the band see it as entwined with who they are. “Everything you do as an individual is political,” says David.
For now, however, they are keen to get some sleep. There is a discussion around how much time they’ve had off since winning Eurovision in 2021, with the general consensus landing on about two weeks in total. With another tour booked for this year, including a sold-out show at London’s O2 Arena, and a Grammy award to fight for (they’re nominated for best new artist), their schedule seems unlikely to let up any time soon.
“Two weeks off in two years!” repeats a dazed David shaking his head. Rock’n’roll stops for no one.
