do you have any thoughts on nine inch nails/their song “closer” and the music video for it?
to preface: i am autistic and nine inch nails is a special interest for me. “closer” has a deeper meaning than “the sex song” and is part of a big concept album, and i genuinely think trent reznor is a great artist & director, but people brush off his music/videos because it’s “just” sexual or controversially erotic. well, like klimt or whoever said, all art is erotic!! everything has value no matter what part of your brain it is appealing to. the-goya-jerker dot tumblr dot com i think you are the only guy who actually understands this. you dont have to agree with me i just respect how you view art from the perspective of a nine inch nails fan
Thank you for bringing your special interest to me, dear stranger. I am a king, presented a beautiful gift on a velvet cushion. A princess being given the dearest of unicorn foals to nurture here.
I never knew that The Downward Spiral was a concept album. (My music knowledge tends to be broad and shallow over narrow and deep, y'know?). I knew a few songs (The Only Time is a personal fave) but I didn't know much about the band.
So, just as an overview of the album it's about the narrator's titular downward spiral. Wikipedia lists the themes as: "religion, dehumanization, violence, disease, society, drugs, sex, and finally, suicide."
Just looking at Closer, it's not hard to see why people think of it as a "sex song", honestly. But much like a lot of popular art, I encourage the audience to really listen to the lyrics here, to examine it in a different way.
The backing track (hiiii Iggy Pop! Iggy Pop cameo here!!) has a strong rhythm. The breathy vocals add to the sexual feeling of the song. The lyrics are, on a surface level, talking about sex. But there's some pretty loaded language included. The narrator doesn't just use your typical words like making love or fucking. He "desecrates" he "violates" he "uses". The use of the phrase "I wanna fuck you like an animal" isn't about the intensity, it's about self-degradation.
I think a pretty fair general interpretation (and do come correct me if you think otherwise anon!) is that the narrator wants to escape himself, his flaws, his self loathing, by having sex with people. He wants to be someone else.
This isn't a song about just having sex, this is a song about hating yourself so much that sex feels like it must be degrading for the other person just because it's with you.
There's also some things going on with religion and sexuality here. Sex is a desecration of the partner, it is making them worse, it is using them. But also there's this desperate devotion to this person. The way he says "You make me perfect / Help me become somebody else", the constant pleas for help dispersed throughout, even the section where he offers up himself entirely... it feels like borderline religious devotion. But this contrasts against the desecration in a way that's very fascinating to me.
As a review? I give this a 9/10. It's erotic, but not in the way most people assume. The devotion and degradation as constant themes really sell it. The religious themes add to it wonderfully. And I love to hear a man beg.
The only reason it's not 10/10 is because I know Closer to God (the reworking of this track) gets that honor. I think it just elevates the track even more when the two are presented side by side, and for me Closer to God wins out. The more staticky track is really right up my alley (I enjoy the more industrial and distorted sound of it).
In the end though, both feel transcendentally erotic in their own way.
The songs in question for anyone who wants them:

which marauders character/s is this song to you ?
PETER OH MY GOD ITS PETER
this is my reasoning:
in the song, some of the lyrics remind me an awful lot of peter's betrayal and the role sirius had in it, specifically the lines:
See the city's ripped backsides
We'll see the bright and hollow sky
We'll see the stars that shine so bright
Oh, stars made for us tonight
'the city's ripped backsides' reminds me of peter's take on the marauders and their friendship with him, especially in later years and during the war.
'the bright and hollow sky' - earlier in the song, the lyrics suggest the narrator thinks the stars are 'bright in a hollow sky' or (my take) hope in darkness. sirius was peter's opportunity to betray james and lily, and 'the bright and hollow sky' in the verse quoted may perhaps mean peter both regrets and is glad he became the traitor, for he paid with his friendship but gained power and allies, and that he's grateful for sirius' blinded trust and how that elevated his plan.
'the stars that made us tonight' - a direct reference to sirius' part in the betrayal and how he inadvertently caused james and lily's deaths through peter, and how peter benefitted from that decision.
AND DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE NEXT PART OF THE SONG.
Oh, the passenger
He rides and he rides
He looks through his window
What does he see?
He sees the silent hollow sky
He sees the stars come out tonight
He sees the city's ripped backsides
He sees the winding ocean drive
And everything was made for you and me
All of it was made for you and me
'Cause it just belongs to you and me
So let's take a ride and see what's mine
and,
He rides and he rides
He sees things from under glass
He looks through his window's eye
He sees the things that he knows are his
He sees the bright and hollow sky
He sees the city asleep at night
He sees the stars are out tonight
And all of it is yours and mine
And all of it is yours and mine
to summarise what are two paragraphs of utter brilliance, you could see this as peter seeing what others cannot see, and how that may have been yet another factor in his double-agent act. he could see everything wrong during the war: sirius and remus' mistrust, james and lily's anxiety, perhaps even the order's uncertainty about whether they'll win the war, a key motivator in peter's betrayal.
additionally, 'all of it is yours and mine' - this reminds me greatly of peter's naivety when he had just told voldemort james and lily's location - he thought he had it all. he thought he was untouchable. he was not.
this is a ridiculously good song and ask, so please feel free to add more thoughts on to it!!

Las Vulpess: the scandal
Just 40 years ago, four girls from the Bilbo neighborhood of Irala, between 17 and 21, starred in the first media scandal related to freedom of expression in Spain. Las Vulpess had not yet recorded a single single when the music critic Carlos Tena decided to make a music video with them on his new program on TVE, Caja de ritmos.
The sisters Loles and Lupe Vázquez (guitar and drums, respectively), were responsible for adapting the lyrics of I Wanna Be Your Dog - by Iggy Pop & The Stooges - in their own way, which Mamen Rodrigo would sing while Begoña Astigarraga played the bass. The song's title?: I like to be a whore.
youtube
Nothing happened at that time, since it was a program with a very small audience. The scandal erupted ten days later, when newspaper ABC published the lyrics of the song and vigorously protested its broadcast in children's programming hours, arguing that the song "degrades Spanish society, revolts the father of a family, unworthy the responsible citizen, breaks the intimacy of the home, violates what is established in the Constitution and goes beyond the limits of what is tolerable".
The media of that time asked for heads to roll: Caja de ritmos was not broadcast again, the presenter submitted his resignation and, the following Saturday, what the children's audience could see at that time was… a bullfight.
The snowball continued to grow until it reached the courts. The State Attorney General's Office filed a criminal complaint against the director of the program "for offense to modesty and good customs" and Loles Vázquez as the author of the lyrics and Mamen Rodrigo as vocal interpreter for public derision. Three, five years in prison and ten years of disqualification were requested for them. In 1986, the case was dismissed.
Thanks to growing up in very politically committed families, Loles – whose parents had fought against Franco in hiding, from unionism and women's associations – also had that support.
"My family helped us, my parents and brothers understood and supported us, we all went together, and it was quite important to feel so supported," the guitarist confesses. "We did not fear for our future, but of course it did worry us, because handling a scandal at the age we were was not easy, on the contrary, it was very difficult. A lot of stress, the phone did not stop ringing, everybody wanted to exploit the whole scandal: first musically and then the media, the political parties… It was pretty fucked up, speaking clearly".
Las Vulpess were the first all-female punk-rock quartet in Spain. I would venture to say that, even, rock in general. "If in the US or England it was already difficult for women to be in a rock group, well imagine in the Basque Country at that time. Even the boys had a hard time getting their instruments or a place, nobody had money, we were in a super harsh crisis. Rock and roll was very sexist, women's work was basically escort, groupie. Punk revolutionized everything, and one of the things that changed was the role of women. We too could be in a stage", concedes Loles Vázquez.
Now we are more accustomed, not only in punk but in more formal commercial pop, to hearing the word "bitch" or "whore" reversing its connotations of insult as a symbol of pride and self-affirmation. And, although it is impossible to collect data that proves anything, if they were not the first in the world, Las Vulpess sure were pioneers in this. Before rappers like Queen Latifah or MC Lyte began to use "bitch" in the same way in the US at the end of the 80s, no other precedents have been revealed. "I first played with Latin, hence the Vulpes thing," [Vulpes means fox in Latin, fox in Spanish has the same meaning that bitch in English] explains the author of the adaptation, which she wrote at the age of 15.
"It was what I received then. I wore leopard miniskirts made from car upholstery, we tore our stockings at the feet, because there weren't those things like leggings today… So with those looks, the stiletto shoes, the nets, the eyes painted with the eyeliner, when the guys passed by me they yelled at me: Whore! That was what they called me the most. And, well, I liked it. I liked being who I was. Being different was a source of pride. Those guys who defended marriage and those who were junkies and considered themselves cool, all told me the same. All those people calling me a bitch made me think, to that age, that being a whore was cool."
But what happened to Las Vulpess? Their label, Dos Rombos, hurried them to record the single that quickly sold out a circulation of 7,000 copies and, shortly after, sold 5,000 more, but the girls said they saw hardly any money from it.
Although the worst came with the concerts. On May 18, 1983, barely a month after the controversy, they performed at the temple of the Movida in Madrid, the Rock-Ola. But they ran into the peculiar reception of the security personnel in the room, who gave them a beating in the dressing room for singing a song critical of the Police. According to what Las Vulpess recounted, when they went to the nearest police station to report what had happened, they found that the agents who attended them were the same ones who had attacked them. They were policemen who had infiltrated the concert. It was not the only time, as confirmed by the guitarist.
"Yes, they used to beat us, yes. We were included in concerts with groups that had nothing to do with us. Then the press also released many lies and there were people who thought we would go out naked or in our panties. People weren't going to see a punk rock concert, they were going to cause a scandal. Buses full of fascists also came to boycott us, and we had to get out on our feet many times".
"In the end, everybody wanted to take advantage -adds Loles-, we were fresh meat, and both the politicians and the promoters took advantage, (…) they took all the money and we could not return home. All that burned us out a lot, it annoyed us quite a bit, and clearly, that caused us to break up, although it must also be emphasized that there were already musical differences between us".
That summer at the Bilbo festivities Las Vulpess said "enough" and disbanded a fortnight before entering to record what should have been their first album.

rating music pls dont hate me #33 | BRAT - CHARLI XCX
CHARLI has always been an icon of the pop industry, the internet culture, and the gays. she's responsible for the making of HUGE HITS like I LOVE IT by ICONA POP, FANCY by IGGY AZALEA. she helped REVOLUTIONIZE a new LANDSCAPE for POP MUSIC, taking inspiration from BUBBLEGUM BASS and the PC MUSIC record label and making POP 2. as you can see, she is a BIG DEAL.
with the help of her long-time executive producer A.G COOK, CHARLI returns to the HYPERPOP concept i know and love in her newest album, BRAT. however, BRAT add a simple twist in this form of production—it's a 41-minute long CLUB RECORD. a GREEN PANTONE-coded back drop with with the text 'BRAT' in lowercase printed in the center that is slightly compressed is presented in the cover of the album. "i think the constant demand for access to women’s bodies and faces in our album artwork is MYSOGINISTIC and BORING [sic]," CHARLI tweeted out in response to people's criticism of the artwork's MINIMALISM. she's "not doing things to be NICE." CHARLI's confrontational actions is an introduction of what to expect.
now what is BRAT? BRAT is how CHARLI refer to a person who is "a bit MESSY who loves to PARTY and says DUMB THINGS," CHARLI explains. "she's HONEST, BLUNT, AND A LITTLE BIT VOLATILE. that's BRAT."CHARLI's BRAT SUMMER is a SUMMER holiday where you can do whatever you want and be, and you can assume what a BRAT SUMMER is whatever you like. "[BRAT SUMMER] can be LUXURY but it can also be TRASHY. just like a pack of CIGS and a BIC lighter and a strappy white TANK with NO BRA," the POPSTAR joked in a radio interview with NICK GRIMSHAW. "that's kind of all you need." it's like MEGAN THEE STALLION's HOT GIRL SUMMER, but you're a RAVE GIRL.
what i love about CHARLI's BRAT is how HONEST and RELATABLE she is in the ALBUM and how CONFRONTING she approach to it. CHARLI did confirm that there is no other DISS TRACK in the album but VON DUTCH, but the lyricism is BRUTATLLY HONEST and DIRECT, yet it feels PERSONAL and INFORMAL—CHARLI described it as "the way i would say it to a FRIEND in a TEXT MESSAGE". this way of CHATTING her feelings on the album helps me connect more into all the things she's talking about.
the production is top-tier, too. A.G COOK cooks just as hard as POP 2, now with a more UPBEAT and RAVY tune. CHARLI took part in CO-PRODUCING the track APPLE, she did AWESOME looking at the overall quality of the song (and her BOILER ROOM stage which you should check out). with the PERFECTLY-CRAFTED lyrics over a layer of AUTO-TUNE in some places, she cooked up a AOTY contender, no doubt the AOTY winner.
well, in conclusion, BRAT is now my top 1 album of the year, and my most favorite CHARLI album, succesding POP 2.
underrated gem(s): EVERYTHING IS ROMANTIC - crazy how unpopular this song is like HUHHHH, I MIGHT SAY SOMETHING STUPID - my top 1 sad song of all time in tie with CARAMELDASSEN BUT IT'S PLAYING IN A DIFFERENT ROOM (1 HOUR LOOP), SO I - RIP SOPHIA the best memorial song for the best artist in the HYPERPOP game,
tracks that i rec listening: all
worst track: I THINK ABOUT IT ALL THE TIME - it's a very meaningful song but it kind of run dry BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN ITS TERRIBLE THO.
overall score 9.9/10 - this is all opinion so pls no hate

A bid for Black Sabbath bravado in “Friday Night Lights”
Within the pilot episode of the masterful mid-’00s teen drama “Friday Night Lights,” we’re presented with two best friends. There’s the all-American, wholesome good boy, Jason Street (Scott Porter) -- the star quarterback of the Dillon Panthers, with little else but a bright future glistening in the crosshairs of his steely focus. And then, there’s his lifelong pal, Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch) -- a lovable party boy who turns up to practice with vodka on his breath, and who has seemingly accepted the inheritance of a dead-end future from his deadbeat dad. If Lux Lisbon would have survived “The Virgin Suicides” to have a kid with Trip Fontaine, it would have grown up to be Tim.
Set in the small town of Dillon, Texas, the two teens occupy vastly different corners of the pigskin pressure cooker within which they exist. Nice guys like Street do well a place like Dillon, and he has everything going for him -- incredible career prospects, a head cheerleader for a girlfriend, and the entire town’s adulation.
Meanwhile, Riggins is shown to be a reckless rogue, forgiven for his sins only because of how great he plays ‘ball -- and how much the ladies love him. You can see him souring between scenes and his burnout feels inevitable and overdue -- living with his brother amidst a blur of blondes and beer bottles, with nary an emotion in sight. While Street trains and studies and earns his place on the pitch, Riggins emerges with all the discipline of Iggy Pop on a stage full of broken glass -- raw and wounded, he takes whatever fire might fuel that inevitable burnout and pours it like kerosene onto the field.
At a Panther’s Party hosted at Garrity’s Automobile -- the hottest ticket in town, folks! -- Dillon’s mayor, Lucy Rodell, squares up to Street to tell him some home truths. “You’re a nice boy,” she tells him. “And you got great manners.” And while he’s politely Yes ma’am-ing it up in response, she cuts to the chase. “Knock it off. You can't go into the game tomorrow night like that,” she proclaims. “Carpet bomb 'em, you understand? ... Chew 'em up, spit 'em out.”
A closeted lesbian who clearly knows her way around unleashing a certain amount of repressed energy wherever she can, Rodell recommends that he listen to the early work of Black Sabbath, assuring him, “It’ll make you mean.” Boys can’t be soft and nice. Winners have to be mean and gristly. The survival of the town depends on this mentality: It chugs at a fountain of toxic masculinity and it lays waste to those who cannot swallow the broth and conform.
During an episode of the podcast, “It’s Not Only Football: ‘Friday Night Lights And Beyond,” Porter revealed that the sequence wasn’t scripted. But it certainly sets up the tone for the rest of the episode, if not the rest of the show. After all, it was Black Sabbath who performed, “Killing Yourself To Live” in 1973, with singer, Ozzy Osbourne -- a good boy who arguably had to make himself mean to survive -- singing, “How people look and people stare, well I don't think that I even care. You rot your life away and what do they give? You're only killing yourself to live.”
And while the song’s lyrics may be about the hollow nature of the music industry, the song could certainly apply to a small town community that rests all its hopes, fortunes, and futures on the score card of a teenage sports team -- no matter the cost.
That certainly feels true when Street becomes paralysed after experiencing a catastrophic spinal injury during a tackle on game night. The Rodell scene might have been played for laughs, but it lurches back into focus like a harsh foreshadowing: Was Street too nice? Too polite? If he would have been tougher, meaner, nastier, would his body have experienced the impact of another body differently? Would he have been protected by the dark arts of Black Sabbath?
Obviously, the answer is no. As Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler) reaffirms to Street, his team, and just about anyone else who needs to hear it, the tragedy was blameless. Unfortunate but unavoidable. Life is cruel. Unpredictable. Much of “Friday Night Lights” pivots around this problem -- like a coach drawing up the strategy of an upcoming game, you have to decide how you’re going to play against the obstacles of being alive.
Alas, though apt, “Killing yourself to live” isn’t the mantra of the Dillon Panthers, but rather the searingly motivational, “Clear eyes, full heart, can’t lose.” Like much of the storytelling on “Friday Night Lights,” the team motto doesn’t just apply to football -- it’s also a sturdy life affirmation that just about anyone in need can scribble onto the desperation of their morning journals. It’s a statement that urges anyone who can pay attention to it to remain sweet and vulnerable in the face of adversity. You’ll be dealt tough tackles, the mantra insists, but don’t lose yourself in the pursuit to overcome them.
Ultimately, it’s a mantra that suggests that softness, sweetness, and niceness can also create winners -- but it’s all about strategy. It’s no good being soft, sweet, and nice if you don’t how to apply those qualities properly. Alas, the universe -- and other people -- are generally not so kind. Make yourself too pliable, and life will contort and reshape you into something you may not recognise -- or at the very least, may not want to recognise. As the show progresses, it becomes evident that much of “Friday Night Lights” also pivots around the “Can’t lose” aspect of that mantra. Say it isolated, without the eyes and the heart, and it sounds desperate -- almost deranged. For many of the male characters, their arcs in the show center around how they reckon with failure, tragedy, and defeat: What loss does to masculinity and how others perceive it.
For Street, it hardens him. But it’s earned.
During an appearance on “It’s Not Only Football,” the showrunner of “Friday Night Lights,” Jason Katims, revealed that in the development of the show, he was drawn to the idea of producing stories about marginalised people. “There were very few shows at the time -- or movies for that matter -- that really looked at real small town America [and that were] about people that weren’t privileged,” he explained. “Television, even the good television, was really about privilege.”
In the world of “Friday Night Lights,” all fortune is predicated on football. If you’re within the vicinity of the ball, then you wield a certain amount of privilege. Whether you’re a player, a coach, a financer, or a loved one of any of these people, then you probably have a little of power to leverage within Dillon. But that isn’t to say that this power is versatile or something that can be wielded within the real world. After all, it becomes quickly apparent that being a part of the game doesn’t protect any of these characters from the indignities of prejudice. Nor does it salvage against the sort of failure that becomes of a person who isn’t equipped with the same access to opportunities as those with more privilege.
With the exception of a sacred few well-to-do, able-bodied white folk in the show, “Friday Night Lights” is populated by characters who are weighed down by obstacles related to poverty, abuse, race, gender, addiction, homophobia, and disability. However, part of the show’s charm is how it centers on these characters not so much overcoming these obstacles, but rather rising above the prejudice and bullshit of it all so they can figure out how to live their lives on their own terms. Even if that means leaving small-town Dillon, Texas -- and the team -- in the process.
In the pilot episode, Street is presented as being perhaps the most privileged person in Dillon. His parents appear to be happily married and of a fair, stable income. He’s straight, able-bodied, athletically gifted, good looking -- and, impossibly, almost ridiculously humble about all of it. But with one injury, much of that changes. He’s forced to reckon with being paraplegic while watching his family’s savings and income be stripped to the bone due to medical expenses and rehabilitation.
He’s reconfigured by the community that once heralded him a hero, and he loses access to almost all the corners of the world and the people that meant anything to him: His game, his girlfriend, his best friend.
While Street reconfigures his idea of masculinity -- featuring some bold declarations about simply being a cripple who wants to listen to Nirvana, moooom -- and toughens up in the process, Riggins stops fighting his emotions, and softens up, instead. When Street becomes paralysed, something inside his best friend breaks open and for episode after episode, he lets life pulvarise him into a tender steak of emotional frailty -- and it’s rare that he ever gets a swing in, himself. It’s a far cry from the beer chugging emo-void of episode one. Regardless, although Street accepts a tougher interior, he nevertheless maintains his heart. He might speak up for himself more now, but his actions are rarely cruel or without merit.
The character arcs of “Friday Night Lights” lean against this same principle again and again -- the people who prevail aren’t necessarily the ones who give in to the impulse to strike back and be spiteful or seek vengeance. But rather, its those who allow themselves to be vulnerable -- who take the hits without striking back and who rise above, soft and strong. Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.
But there’s someone who can put this far better than I ever could. At the end of the pilot episode, Coach Taylor makes a rousing speech to his wounded team. They’ve just watched their friend and teammate be carried off the field, his parents and girlfriend screaming from the rafters. Pushing their feelings aside, they were forced to continue the game and not lose sight of the goal.
“Life is so very fragile. We are all vulnerable. And we will all, at some point in our lives ... fall. We will all fall,” he tells them. “We must carry this in our hearts, that what we have is special. That it can be taken from us, and that when it is taken from us, we will be tested ... It is these times, it is this pain, that allows us to look inside ourselves.”
Crucially, “Friday Night Lights” hangs its cap upon the stern fist pumps of this speech. It’s a sentiment that offers the reminder that nothing is owed, and everything is earned. Mayor Rodell had it wrong when she encouraged Street to get mean and obliterate the opposition. What the show suggests is that the only path to true success and accord is to leave yourself open to being the one to get chewed up and spat out by life, not the other way around. The victory can be found in however you emerge from the other side. It takes courage to be vulnerable -- and to be vulnerable requires a period of transformation. Even Black Sabbath dropped their meanness and bat-snacking to reckon with heartbreak via a piano-ballad, “Changes” -- “The world had its evil way. My heart was blinded, love went astray.” Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose, boys.

Thursday – “White Bikes”
Thursday have released another new song, titled “White Bikes.” SURPRISE! We’ve been blown away by your support this year: you’ve bought our merch, come to our shows, streamed our music. In April we dropped our first song in over a decade. Then in June we had the opportunity to spend some time at Hansa studios in Berlin, where David Bowie wrote and recorded Heroes, where Nick Cave, Iggy Pop, Depeche Mode and REM all made history. There are still magical places left in this world and Hansa is one of them. The result of this session — a song called “White Bikes” and a video documenting our time in Berlin — will start to appear online as the clock strikes midnight around the world tonight / tomorrow morning. Twenty five years to the day that we unveiled our first ever song, we are sharing our newest one. This is our gift to you this holiday season. We hope you love it as much as we do. “White Bikes” started with an idea from Norman Brannon, and you can hear his distinctive style all over this song. Stuart Richardson had the idea to produce the track like a nostalgic, upbeat, summertime version of War All the Time. Geoff told us that the lyrics deal with the loss of a dear friend — one of the first people he ever played music with — who disappeared one day on his bike. This one means a lot to us for a lot of different reasons. We have no record label, we have no “team” behind this. But we have each and every one of you and that is all weve ever really needed in these 25 years… “White Bikes” on the side of the road.Thursday --- Please consider becoming a member so we can keep bringing you stories like this one. ◎ https://chorus.fm/news/thursday-white-bikes/

A Call for Peace in 'Red, White and Blue' by FireBug Have you heard FireBug's powerful new rock anthem "Red, White and Blue" yet? This Southern California duo has been cranking out gritty, bluesy riffs for years, but their latest single takes on a whole new level of meaning and passion. For Jules and the FireBug crew, "Red, White and Blue" represents a rallying cry for unity amidst all the toxic division plaguing America recently. The hard-hitting lyrics pour straight from the heart, touching on how everyday people from all walks of life are dealing with the same struggles and shouldering the same burdens. Jules' soaring vocals echo with the simple but vital message - at the end of the day, we've got way more in common than what separates us as a nation. But "Red, White and Blue" isn't just words. From the first thunderous drum beats that hit like a colonial-era battle cry to the scorching guitar melodies and driving basslines, this is a full-blown rock 'n' roll assault on the senses. At times it feels like an unholy collision of The Cranberries' haunting vocals and Janis Joplin's raw firepower. Having a studio legend like two-time Grammy winner Adrian Bushby behind the boards doesn't hurt either. The guy who's worked with Muse and the Foo Fighters brought his magic touch to "Red, White and Blue," injecting FireBug's bluesy backbone with punchy modern production that makes every component pop. For a band that rose up from playing local dives to iconic stages alongside legends like Iggy Pop and Iron Maiden, "Red, White and Blue" feels like the perfect next step in FireBug's journey towards mainstream transcendence. This is a song that deserves to be screamed from rooftops and airwaves across the entire divided union. More than just a killer rock track, it's a galvanizing reminder that even as we're bombarded with hate and negativity, there's still a unified community out there striving towards hope. If you're searching for the light in these divisive times, "Red, White and Blue" is one helluva inspirational lighthouse. MUSIC JOURNAL #4
Stardate 2024.64
Some recent song reviews:
1. Strings and piano-laden, emotional and personal song about the lyricist finding and longing for their ideal self. It follows a similar lyrical narrative to one longing for a missing lover, 'when will I see her/when will I feel her again'. An interesting and pleasingly constructed song.
2. Interpol/Editors/Joy Division is the obvious influence, both with the post punk tempo and his vocals, but the lyrics seem more positive and intimate than its main inspiration, and injects something new into that familiar sound.
3. This band have featured on my playlists before, what I like about this particular song is what happens past the middle mark, something slightly elevates here out of the Johnny Marr/Headland/Sparklehorse sound, the effect on the vocals overlaps into slight indecipherability, but some vulnerability is tapped into, the guitar is isolated briefly and then; 'all the pain that you held onto' (that's the lyrics from their bandcamp, but it sounds like 'blame' which also works) 'hoping it would somehow amuse/Leaving out all the fine details/Obscuring the truth'
4. Some swaggering, Iggy Pop/Bowie glam rock, though based on the band's profile photo on Bandcamp, which looks like a genuine 70s band photo, they aren't going for glam rock specifically, but I hear it in this song. Fun, energetic Rock 'n Roll.
5. This is the kind of vulnerable, inspiring, borderline theatrical woman-power song I cannot possibly add to my playlists since accepting vulnerability and announcing it also means you are liable to give into said vulnerability, the 'I will never' is more likely to become a 'I will' than a lukewarm opinion. Because talking about it and singing it means you're thinking deeply about it. In this instance, focus on the song 'I Am My Own' and the passionately delivered lines 'I won't give to you/Not my soul to you/My control to you/I am my own' sounds so much to me like someone fighting this notion and could easily succumb, especially because she drops the 'Not' in the third verse. So that aside, her pitch/range, intonation, vocalisations and powerful delivery combined with emotional, inspiring lyrics, she should be writing songs for Disney blockbusters for real. Quite spectacular.
6. This is a bit more like something I would have playlisted in 2012, the echoey, Ladytron-esque production as well as the gender-swap cover version would definitely have been up my street back then, but I pay more attention to lyrics these days and I don't relate to these. But the production is very good, a solid electronic-indie pop song. (Upon opening the blog post I see this was a track on a free Mojo CD from 2012, so I guess I nailed the era)

Gaesteliste.de “Between trash and art” - 2000
We actually know Queen Adreena, because behind the new name are Katie Jane Garside and Crispin Gray, who caused a sensation in the early 90s as the disturbed pop music apocalypse Daisy Chainsaw, but then relatively quickly got fed up with life as rock stars and with each other . Now they are back, albeit in a new guise and with newly assigned roles. Katie Jane now writes her own lyrics, and while she explores the psychological depths of her own past more confidently than ever before, Crispin’s music today is more oriented towards PJ Harvey and Björk, but for every trip-hopping piece à la “Yesterday’s Hymn” there is also anno 2000 another guitar shocker like “X-ing Off the Days” from Garside/Gray. A band between trash and art. It’s not entirely clear to me where they’re going with this, but the moment they figure that out, Queen Adreena will be a really great band. Promised!
But let’s start at the beginning: In 1991, Katie Jane Garside - for many the female version of Iggy Pop - was already on the verge of becoming a megastar, because Daisy Chainsaw was pure energy, and none other than Courtney Love announced that it was only There are three women who are really important for the Riot Grrrl movement: yourself, Kat Bjelland from Babes In Toyland and Katie Jane Garside. But the pressure became too much and Katie was forced to leave Daisy Chainsaw (“The band was like an untamed animal”). She then spent most of the 90s trying to get her own life back on track before she accidentally met former Chainsaw guitarist Crispin Gray last year and decided to make music with him again. “I live in a world of my own,” Katie admits to us during the guest list interview. “I only very rarely come into contact with the ‘waking’ world. Music is the means of crossing the border, my way of escaping isolation.” “Taxidermy” only partially has something in common with the apocalyptic noise of Daisy Chainsaw. Because between the attractive noise that you are used to from Garside and co, there are also trip-hopping songs, some even have some gothic elements. Katie: “It depends on how you define Gothic, though. If you mean romanticism, that’s okay, but many people think of smoke machines and bats when they hear the term. We have nothing to do with that.” Queen Adrena In a way, Queen Adreena is as chaotic as Chainsaw back then, Katie admits, but now - better organized and with the help of strong management - she is able to separate the chaos within the band from outside influences. She rarely thinks about the future: “It’s like Alcoholics Anonymous. Nobody there says: 'I’ll never touch a drink again’. And just as I don’t say: 'We’ll definitely make another record. I always just think about the next day and hope that things continue somehow.”

PSA on Britney Spears and the #FreeBritney movement for anyone that needs or wants more information on what is going on with her. It’s a fucking rabbit hole, so buckle up.
A little backstory first. Britney was a child star starting at the age of 4 years old on Broadway, and then worked her way to the Mickey Mouse Club, and eventually the solo career we know today. Her career has been on autopilot her entire life. If you look back at her music, she’s been telling everyone for years she’s too controlled and treated as a product if you listen to the lyrics of most of her hits. Examples include: Lucky, Overprotected, My Perogative, Circus, Piece of Me and Gimme More. Her music videos, social media posts, tour props and photoshoots regularly show her in a cage or in chains. If anyone has ever seen videos of her when she was younger, you’d know her REAL singing voice is very similar to Christina Aguilera’s. Her record label didn’t like it, as they were both on the Mickey Mouse Club and about to release their debut albums at the same time. So they had her voice retrained to sing in the baby voice we all know today because they believed it to be more iconic and would create a brand and career for her instead of her real voice. It’s unhealthy, and it’s been destroying her voice over the years, thus why she is known for lip syncing. She wanted to make an acoustic type pop album in 2006 titled Original Doll and reinvent herself using her real voice. The album was shelved and cancelled once her label realized she would be singing in her real voice. She isn’t allowed to sing live because she will either fail terribly, or she’ll have to sing in her deep voice that she isn’t known for. Her entire career she has been treated like a product meant to sell.
Now, for the real tea.
Everyone remembers the 2007 meltdown. Everyone. Leading up the meltdown Britney was going thru a public divorce, had two children under the age of 2 at the time and was VERY much the focus of the public. We all saw her on every magazine cover. We all also saw the photo of her with one of her kids on her lap while driving. Go on YouTube once and look up ‘Britney Spears paparazzi’. You’ll watch her be chased and followed by hundreds of them, even trying to get into a public restroom to photograph her, videotaping her in tears asking them to leave her alone, and even filming her thru the windows of an ambulance while she was naked being taken away for her final mental health hold.
After the public meltdown, shaving her head, locking herself in her home with her children, speaking in a british accent on regular basis, wearing the imfamous pink wig everywhere, and shopping naked, she was hospitalized twice. After the hospitalization, her father petitioned the courts to be a TEMPORARY conservator to her until she was mentally stable and for only one years time. 2 months after her hospitalization she did a guest appearance on How I Met Your Mother. 6 months after her hospitalization, she drops the Womanizer video and starts to promote her new album Circus with its worldwide tour that grossed $131.8 million. If she’s so unwell, why did she start working right away?
Her father after one year petitioned the courts for the conservatorship to become permanent due to her ALLEGEDLY having EARLY ONSET DEMENTIA in her TWENTIES. It passed and has been that way ever since. For 12 years to be exact.
Now for everyone that doesn’t understand what that means let me break it down for you.
Britney Spears is a now 38 year old woman who is not allowed to do the following without her fathers permission or he can legally lock her up in a mental health facility:
• drive a car
• vote
• get married
• have children
• spend HER OWN MONEY
• see how her money is being spent
• see her children (she has 30% custody of both of her boys due to her dad assaulting one of her sons)
• leave her home
• hire her own lawyer
• have any control over her career
• speak about the conservatorship publicly
• do interviews that aren’t scripted and all final cuts are approved by her father as well
• use a cell phone without being monitored
• use social media unmonitored
• contact ANYONE without being monitored or having them extremely vetted. (Iggy Azalea allegedly had her house searched for drugs top to bottom when they collaborated on a song together)
• go shopping
• go for a walk
• get Starbucks
A conservatorship is meant for people with mental health issues or decaying health. Most likely grandparents or people with actual dementia etc. They are meant for people who literally cannot take care of themselves. If she is so unwell that she isn’t mentally capable of doing anything for herself, why is she still working? Since the conservatorship began 12 years ago she has:
• released 4 albums
• done 3 worldwide tours
• did a FOUR-year Vegas residency
• was a full time judge on X-Factor
• released multiple perfumes and a lingerie line
• made $138 MILLION DOLLARS or so A YEAR
In January of last year, Britney was placed in a mental health facility for 3 months after being seen driving her car to In-N-Out with her boyfriend without permission and for refusing to take the sedating medications her father has doctors prescribing her to keep her under control. She testified to a judge in documents that she was held there against her will by her father. After it was leaked to the press that she was there against her will, the Free Britney movement picked up speed causing a judge to open an investigation into the impact and legality her conservatorship has on her life. Britney’s mother Lynn was also liking and commenting on Free Britney posts saying she agrees that Britney is trapped by her father. Britney’s team had Twitter disable the Free Britney hashtag, and regularly threatens any celebrity that speaks out using the hashtag with a lawsuit if they don’t remove their support for the movement. She was seen shortly after leaving a hotel thru the front door (99% of celebrities park underground to avoid paparazzi unless they WANT to be photographed) stumbling while carrying her shoes, and out of it. Her team used that moment to justify to the public that she needs this conservatorship. She is not allowed to have any say in the hiring or firing of anyone on her team. Every year she pays $1.1 million dollars in fees for the conservatorship to continue, including paying her father a solid $100k+ salary and paying a lawyer she isn’t allowed to choose. She is allowed an allowance of around $1,500 a week for bills, shopping and essentials. Her net worth is $250 million.
So, when everyone sees her on Instagram walking up and down her hallways like it’s a fashion show. That’s all she is allowed to do. She has NEVER had control over her life. I don’t care if you personally like her or her music, NO ONE DESERVES THIS. All this woman wants is to see her children, make the music she wants to make, and go get a frappuccino in her car. She is a light of sunshine in this world, and we must protect her at all costs. So please, do not make fun of her, support the Free Britney movement, and send good vibes her way. She has a court date this month to review the conservatorship and decide if it is abusive or will continue to be in place. There are so many details to this that i left out that would make this post entirely much longer than it is, but a simple search will show you what else is out there. Spread this far and wide. ❤️ Free Britney

Hi, I was just wondering if you could make a post about what determines musical taste?? Thanks xx
this is a very interesting question,
let's talk about it!
How to determine music taste with Astrology 🎶
to determine music taste through your birth chart, I would mostly look at your moon and venus sign. the moon rules over emotions and feelings, and we usually listen to music we feel emotionally connected with. venus, on the other hand, is what appeals to us, it's our aesthetic, it's what we like, therefore it also plays a huge role in our music taste.
♈️ ARIES MOON/VENUS, MOON/VENUS IN THE 1ST HOUSE ♈️
aries people tend to like very bold and up-front music. you may be into upbeat tempo music, pop, rap, hip-hop, rock music... anything rebellious that can boost your confidence. musicians with aries venus/moon: lady gaga, rihanna, shakira, mariah carey, bob marley, tyler the creator, chris martin, travis scott...
♉️ TAURUS MOON/VENUS, MOON/VENUS IN THE 2ND HOUSE ♉️
taurus placements, on the other hand, are way more placid than aries. since this sign is ruled by the throat and the voice, people with taurus moon or venus tend to like songs that are heavy in vocals, they appreciate good singing and ballads that can showcase a singer's skills. they probably also listen to jazz, blues, r&b... they definitely enjoy slow, sensual songs, but they don't mind listening to mainstream pop songs either. musicians with taurus moon/venus: christina aguilera, chris brown, jim morrison, ariana grande, melanie martinez, pharell williams, lana del rey, paul mccartney, iggy azalea...
♊️ GEMINI MOON/VENUS, MOON/VENUS IN THE 3RD HOUSE ♊️
gemini don't really stick to one music genre, they listen to anything they like! they easily go from playing indie music to listening to the latest commercial song on the radio. they're not picky, they appreciate anything as long as it resonates with them from the lyrics to the rythm. yet, they could prefer upbeat songs, such as dance / electronic music and pop songs.
♋️ CANCER MOON/VENUS, MOON/VENUS IN THE 4TH HOUSE ♋️
this is probably one of the zodiac signs to appreciate ballads more, as cancer is ruled by the moon, which represents emotions and feelings in astrology. these cancer placements appreciate songs heavy in emotions and melody, they enjoy slow songs that talk to them, that relate to their own story. they need to be able to relate to a song to call it their favourite. I also see cancers enjoying r&b music, which probably puts them in a better mood than ballads, as well as upbeat genres such as funk, pop, or even country and soul. definitely a taylor swift kind of vibe. last but not least, they could also treasure songs that are somehow linked to their memories, maybe to their childhood. these songs will become extremely meaningful for cancers, and they'll never get bored of them.
♌️ LEO MOON/VENUS, MOON/VENUS IN THE 5TH HOUSE ♌️
leos are extremely passionate and energetic, and therefore they enjoy music that is similar to them. they need their music to boost their ego, their self-esteem, they need it to feel better about themselves. pop, upbeat and sexy songs are definitely a must in their playlist, such as britney spears, rihanna, beyonce, etc. some of them may even appreciate hard or soft rock. leos also tend to follow trends, they could get into the popular music on tiktok for example but get tired of it after a couple of months. they also probably enjoy music from musicals, anything that is theatrical and fun.
♍️ VIRGO MOON/VENUS, MOON/VENUS IN THE 6TH HOUSE ♍️
I feel like virgos pay particularly attention to the music they listen to. they are picky, they'll most likely end up listening to indie, r&b, jazz... anything that isn't too commercial. virgo placements are also careful to the lyrics of the song they're listening to, as they are ruled by mercury just like gemini. they need their music to communicate with them. of course that doesn't mean that they don't like commericial music, they just probably prefer less known songs. they could actually jam easily to the latest songs popular on tiktok.
♎️ LIBRA MOON/VENUS, MOON/VENUS IN THE 7TH HOUSE ♎️
libra is the zodiac sign of beauty, therefore people with these placements will take in consieration the aesthetic of a song. for instance, they may like a song for the melody, especially if it's particularly articulate or elegant, and also for the lyrics. in fact, libra and virgo are the poets of the zodiac, they need to be moved by the lyrics of a song to enjoy it. libra is also the sign of love, therefore romantic songs are a must have in their playlist. they may also enjoy classics, such as edith piaf's la vie en rose. they have a similar music taste to virgos, with the difference that libras are less picky, and they can easily enjoy more commercial and popular songs as well, they usually have the tendency to follow trends even if unconsciously.
♏️ SCORPIO MOON/VENUS, MOON/VENUS IN THE 8TH HOUSE ♏️
scorpio rules over sex in astrology, therefore they definitely love listening to slow and sensual songs. basically, sex music. anything darker that makes them feel more confident. the first artist that comes to my mind for this sign is obviously the weeknd, but anything that is r&b and with a soul vibe, such as sza, will work for them. scorpios also love rap, especially if the lyrics are particularly strong and empowering, for example most scorpios love doja cat. scorpios are indeed very sexual, but that doesn't mean that they can't be romantic. in fact, their playlists are probably full of ballads with meaningful lyrics to them. even if they don't listen to them often, they still hold a special place in their heart, as scorpios have the ability to easily dive into the lyrics, becoming one with the song.
♐️ SAGITTARIUS MOON/VENUS, MOON/VENUS IN THE 9TH HOUSE ♐️
sagittarius placements, just like their sister sign gemini, love experimenting, they don't stick to solely one music genre. first of all, sagittarius is a fire sign, therefore they love upbeat music that puts them in a good mood. they love dance music, as well as rap. even though these placements are extremely philosophical, they're not as picky as virgos and libras when it comes to lyrics. of course they enjoy a well-written song, but what matters the most to them is that it's fun to listen to. and of course sagittarius is ruled by jupiter, which represents foreign cultures and languages in astrology. these placements are therefore the most likely to enjoy kpop, jpop, cpop... they don't have prejudices, they can literally listen to anything, even music considered bad or weird.
♑️ CAPRICORN MOON/VENUS, MOON/VENUS IN THE 10TH HOUSE ♑️
capricorns definitely enjoy more serious melodies in their music, they don't really listen to bubbly pop songs. instead, they prefer rap, hip-hop, r&b, jazz, soul... anything that is more mature will work for them. they may also be into old music, maybe music from their parents' years. they don't mind listening to slow, sensual songs like taurus and scorpio either. examples of singers that capricorns could listen to are amy winehouse, stevie nicks, frank ocean, miley cyrus, azealia banks, the weeknd, björk, alicia keys, frank sinatra, megan thee stallion...
♒️ AQUARIUS MOON/VENUS, MOON/VENUS IN THE 11TH HOUSE ♒️
aquarius is ruled by uranus, the planet of electricity. therefore these placements definitely enjoy music heavy in rhythm, such as dance music, metal, punk, rock, edm, rap, etc. just like geminis they don't stick to one music genre, they can listen to anything, even unconventional music, such as indie. for example, aquarius placements usually go from loving harry styles, taylor swift, bts, etc. to listening to maneskin, maroon 5, britney spears, eminem... they may also be into vintage music, especially into 70s/80s music, and maybe also into futuristic beats.
♓️ PISCES MOON/VENUS, MOON/VENUS IN THE 12TH HOUSE ♓️
pisces are the dreamers of the zodiac, therefore they have a knack for dreamy melodies. I don't really know how to describe this with words, but they almost love lullabies, anything that sounds very soft and calming. a song that comes to my mind as an example is slow dancing in the dark by joji. they love magical music. pisces also love lo-fi and indie as well. one thing I've noticed about these placements is that they prefer having pictures connected to their music, therefore they may prefer songs with a choreography they can remember, such as kpop, or in general music they associate to their memories. last but not least, pisces is a mutable sign, therefore they can listen to anything, they're not picky with music.
