Your blog is the only blog where I feel safe enough asking this question. What do you think of Percy Jackson fans who feel as though they and the series have a moral superiority to Harty Potter ? Obviously, Harry Potter and its author are laden with questionable and sometimes straight-up hateful takes and views. But the way PJO fans constantly compare the two, its authors (even though RR is far from flawless), and the two MCs (ignoring how the two both share similarities in the fact that they are both traumatised, abused, angry teenage boys). I'm sorry that this ask got so long, but this has been annoying me for a while now.
This is an interesting question - for one, fandom fights over superiority is a concept that has been around for ages and has never been constructive. PJO and HP fandoms have been fighting in that exact way (and it has gone both ways!) for literal decades (remember, PJO turns 20 this year) so this isn't new, it's just taken on a moral flavor. Let's go over some things though (but please keep in mind i never got into HP and never read the books or fully watched the movies so my knowledge of HP is primarily pop culture absorption/secondhand from my family and friends):
Are either series perfect? No. HP absolutely is full of hateful sentiments and JKR is a hateful person and I do not respect her for that. Disney's marketing recently has absolutely fully leaned into trying to put Rick above her as a moral paragon and emphasizing how progressive he is and his support of diversity in middle grade series, despite some failings to reflect that in the actual text. Are Rick and JKR equally bad? Definitely not. Rick has had tangible good influence on adhd/dyslexia awareness that very directly impacted people like me as a neurodivergent kid going through school in the 2000s. JKR meanwhile has directly negatively impacted trans laws internationally very recently.
Rick absolutely isn't perfect, but he's vocally supportive, has made a lot of effort in the past to be inclusive, and still attempts to do so. Most of his issues simply stem from his own unaddressed internalized bigotry/biases and his research on varying topics not being great (plus poor management decisions such as not hiring a sensitivity reader actually fit for the story he's trying to tell). But he's not hateful. JKR is. JKR is very vocally hateful and bigoted and this is absolutely reflected in her work as well even in earlier HP. They are comparable in that they are both middle grade authors of easily two of the most popular middle grade fantasy (or specifically hidden world fantasy) series out right now. They are not equivalent in the slightest in their bigotry or tangible damage.
In terms of Percy versus Harry, I personally don't think they're very comparable. They share some similarities, but mostly just in that they're both the protagonists of their stories and thus serve protagonist purposes. Beyond that their use within the narrative is pretty different functionally. Their worlds' magic systems are not comparable. The hidden world aspect in both their universes isn't even comparable, since in PJO the "hidden world" aspect is very different from most hidden world fantasy formats because the entire point is that it's functionally not a hidden world. The characters themselves are very different as well - Percy's personality and the way he behaves and reacts to his environment is absolutely nothing like Harry's.
Most of the anti-HP-in-general sentiments stem from wanting to cut off JKR's notoriety, which I think is valid to want to do. And I do think there are a lot of issues with continuing to support JKR's work especially in ways that functionally promote her work or support her financially. Obviously, we will never be able to scrub HP from the cultural zeitgeist. It's just not feasible and I'm very anti-book burning so I do think it's important to acknowledge the role HP has had in pop-culture alongside acknowledging its harmful materials. HP is a text you absolutely can't death-of-the-author your way out of because a lot of the vitriol is baked into the text and worldbuilding in very overt ways - and there are plenty of other pop-culture staple novels like this. But fandom in general, at least true fandom and not mainstream fandom, is so obscure most of the time that I don't think, so long as people are not ignoring negative themes of the source material and are being thoughtful as they navigate engaging with it, that it is an inherently bad thing for HP fandom to just exist at all. It's never going to just stop existing no matter what people do. And HP fandom are not the only ones who should be thoughtful about how they engage with their source material - PJO fandom is not exempt from examining some of the problematic aspects in our own text and figuring out how to be respectful with those topics. It's just a lot easier for PJO fandom to tune it out without it being noticed because there's less of it and it's (at least sometimes) less overt. Honestly if HP fandom decided to go more down the path of a fandom like Warriors or Miraculous Ladybug, where the average sentiment is more along the lines of "Oh god no don't read/watch the source material it sucks/we stopped paying attention to it year ago and it's not relevant at all to what we're up to. We're over here functionally rewriting everything from the ground up/doing our own thing" I would very much support them in that endeavor. I do think there is merit in limiting promotion of the HP source material as much as possible, though.
Hopefully that all makes at least some amount of sense.

Camping - HP
A somewhat unfinished little drabble... Remus and Sirius are on a camping mission for the Order when Remus comes down with a cold.
Note - JKR is a literal trash human and I do not support her financially in any way.
--
Behind him, the vibration of Remus' coughing shook the shared mattress in the small camping tent for what felt like the hundredth time that hour.
Sirius fumbled for his wand in his sleeping bag and flicked it upwards, removing the silencing spell that he'd cast earlier inside the shelter. The tent was pitched under the protection of a bower of trees along the edge of a forest, about a kilometre from the Death Eater hideout they were observing. It had been three days of boredom in the freezing winter rain watching for activity in the manor house across the meadow and in three days, Remus had come down with what Sirius could only describe as a particularly heavy cold.
Or perhaps, by the sound of it, some sort of bronchitis. The rattling coughing sound filled the small space as soon the the silencing spell was removed and the mattress shifted as Remus sat up, reaching in the dark for something.
“Silencing spell doesn't much work if you keep making the mattress shake,” Sirius said.
“Sorry,” Remus croaked. The camping lantern flared to life, casting a warm glow across the room. The tent was minimally appointed; “lovingly outfitted, as Remus has informed Sirius, by the practical tastes of Mad-Eye Moody. Beyond the mattress and sleeping bags, there was a small kitchenette, a table with four chairs, and a tattered sofa.
Remus found what he was looking for: a large glass water bottle which he uncapped and drank from eagerly. The water didn't seem to quell his coughing. He started right back into it after, bent forward with his face tucked into his elbow.
“I'll go sleep on the couch,” he choked between coughs. “Sorry.”
“Poor Moony,” said Sirius, shifting across the bed towards the thinner man. He reached up and ran a hand down Lupin's spine. “No, you don't have to take the sofa. It doesn't bother me - I was just worried about you.”
The coughing finally settled and Remus slumped back into his pillow, sniffling back a runny nose. In the dim lantern light, Sirius studied his face and was dismayed to see that Remus looked worse than he had a few hours earlier when they'd gone to bed.
“Should we go home?” he asked softly, reaching out to test Remus' temperature with a hand to the man's brow. “We can always evacuate and tell Dumbledore we had to go before the observation period was over.”
“No, I'll be fine,” Remus said. “I just need to sleep but I can't...everything's clogged up.”
“C'mere,” Sirius offered, extending his arms to wrap Remus up in an embrace. Remus settled his head against Sirius' chest. “Are you sure there were no helpful potions in the emergency healing kit?”
“No,” Remus croaked. “Just some fever reducer, but I don't think I have a fever. And Pepper-Up, of course, but I might as well just drink tea and save myself the ear smoke. That crap has never worked for me.”
Sirius hummed in agreement and ran his hand through Remus' hair. It was dirty and tangled after three days outside.
“We'll get the bath set up in the morning. Your hair could use a wash.”
“Pot, kettle,” Remus murmured. Sirius' own tangle of long hair hadn't come out of a bun in three days and was looking particularly greasy.
“Black” Sirius replied. “That's me.” Against his chest, Remus shifted and Sirius thought for a moment that he might get a playful punch, but instead Remus tensed and fumbled to get a hand up to his face to shield Sirius' pyjama top from a damp sneeze.
Eh'tsh-GHHSST!
“Oh, Moons,” Sirius sighed, resuming his massage of Remus' scalp.
“Fucking immune system,” Remus groaned, searching the sleeping bag for a handkerchief he'd tucked there earlier. He found it and wiped his reddened nose. It was beginning to get raw around the edges of the nostrils.
“I could hike out tomorrow morning past the Apparition detection wards and get some potions,” Sirius suggested. “But I'd be worried to leave you here alone.”
“I'll be fine,” Remus repeated. “I just need some sleep.”
“Nose is clogged up?” Sirius asked.
Remus nodded against his chest. “Feels almost like a sinus thing. I've got this awful throbbing behind my eyes.”
Sirius extended his fingers, pressing lightly along the top of Remus' cheek bones and tracing under the man's eyes. Remus winced but didn't pull away.
“Ugh,” he groaned and sniffled thickly. “Yeah, that's all blocked up. That helps a little...it—ehhh....Sirius....”
His breath hitched and he pulled away, turning his nose down and sneezing harshly.
Eh-TSGHH!
He followed it with a thick, gurgling sniffle.
“Don't snort it back in,” Sirius admonished. “Where's that handkerchief?”
Remus reached for the cloth and blew his nose with a strained honking noise that made Sirius wince with sympathy. The strained blow turned briefly into a cough that Remus shielded with his fist before he slumped back into Sirius' embrace, exhausted but still stuffed up.
“Try to sleep some more,” Sirius said, resuming his sinus massage with a gentler pressure.
Remus closed his eyes, breathing through his mouth. Eventually he nodded off and Sirius carefully transferred Remus' head to the pillow. Remus murmured a little but didn't wake up.
The next thing Sirius knew, it was morning and he was waking to a thin sliver of sunlight from the tent flap. Remus' side of the bed was empty but the muffled sound of a nose blow from outside made it clear where he'd gone.
There was a cool draft coming from the open tent as Sirius climbed out of his sleeping bag and reached for a jumper, pulling it on over his pyjamas and stepping in to a pair of boots.
Outside, Remus was curled up in a camp chair, hands wrapped around a mug of tea. He looked awful. There was a thin stream of congestion shining around his nostrils and a red flush to his cheeks and lips. His golden brown eyes, normally bright and playful, were marked with dark smudges of exhaustion underneath.
“What are you doing out of bed?” Sirius asked, putting a hand on Remus' shoulder and squeezing.
“Couldn't fall back to sleep,” Remus said hoarsely. “Woke up at dawn needing to piss and figured I might as well take the first watch since I was up.”
“You should at least have a jacket on,” Sirius admonished.
“There's a warming spell on the chair. Anyway, the air feels kinda good...I was all sweaty from coughing.”
Sirius snuck a hand up to feel the back of Remus' neck.
“Still no fever. That's good.”
“It's just a cold, I told you,” Remus replied, ducking away from Sirius' touch. “You don't have to make a fuss.”
“If you're taking first watch, I'll make us some breakfast,” Sirius said. “Beans on toast or pancakes?”
“Doesn't matter. I can't taste anything,” Remus replied.
“Some fun you are. Beans on toast it is.”
Hurhh-tsghGHGHHHT!
Remus suddenly trembled with a harsh sneeze which he mostly managed to direct into the raised crook of his arm.
“And I'll grab you some spare handkerchiefs,” Sirius added, going back in to the tent.

For the past month I've been working with @konstantynowitz in making family trees for our original characters within the hp universe. As of late, we've gotten pretty far in the development of the families working together. I'd already said in a post I made this afternoon that I have been assigned the Rosier branch of this tree and intend to expand on it the best I can. This collaboration will definitely not be a fast process, but in time we hope to complete the entirety of this tree and fill in a couple blanks for you guys to get the full picture of what Konstantyn and I have created together. Right now, there are a few missing pieces within the Rosier branch, but in the next few weeks I plan to complete it. In this tree, I've added a few new ocs into the family. I will go over a few names with you in this post, as well as give you a glimpse into the tree itself.
Tumblr media
From the sneak peak Konstantyn had posted recently about the English branch of the Lestrange family, some of you might've already seen part of the Black family's side of the tree. Let's just say that the Blacks will be the last tree Konstantyn and I work on together as it has the most members, but right now my main focus will be on the Rosiers, which are featured on the right side of the tree.
Tumblr media
The Rosiers were a wealthy and influential pure-blood family and allies of Grindelwald from the late 1920s to the late 1940s. At the top of the family tree are Eglantine Rosier (née Volant) and Laurent Rosier, both loyal acolytes of Gellert Grindelwald. Eglantine and Laurent are the parents of Druella Black (née Rosier) and Étienne Rosier, who is Konstantyn's version of Rosier Sr., a classmate of Tom Riddle. In addition to Druella and Étienne, I have created my own Rosier sibling, Céléase, who is the youngest of the bunch.
Here are the children's birth dates in order:
Étienne Rosier - b. 1926
Druella Rosier - b. 1932
Céléase Rosier - b. 1934
Tumblr media
Laurent Rosier was born in France within the year 1903 and was the younger brother of Vinda Rosier, Grindelwald's most faithful servant. Around the 1930s, Laurent was imprisoned by the French Ministry when he was found guilty of financially supporting Grindelwald and his Alliance. By 1936, he was released with the support of many prominent pure-blood socialites who were either close acquaintances of Rosier, or close friends that all shared in his ideals. The charges against Laurent were dropped and shortly after this incident he moved his family to Great Britain.
If you'd like to know more about Laurent's involvement with Grindelwald and his followers then you can pop into the inbox of @konstantynowitz since he is their oc.
Tumblr media
There are a few blanks regarding the earlier members of the Rosier family, which is something I am going to be working on later. As of now, I don't have names for the parents of Eglantine Volant or her husband. In spite of this, I have made progress on Eglantine's maternal line which consists of the noble Trefle-Picques family that hold a French Dukedom within their bloodline, and the Escoffier-Floquent family (a wizarding family of my own making).
Tumblr media
I have nothing much else to share about the Rosier family itself, but I have been branching off a bit into the French side of the Lestrange family and have connected both lines through Minette Rosier. In this tree, I've made Minette the great-great-aunt of Vinda and Laurent, which would make their father (who is currently unnamed) third cousins with Leta Lestrange.
I know that it’s still a little bare, but I am going to keep working on building it up and will post updates with @konstantynowitz so that we can show the progress we are making with all of this. I would understand if some people may still have questions because not everything that I’ve introduced about the Rosiers was explained in this post. I’m open to hear anyone’s thoughts or questions about anything so feel free to message me anytime.

even though i’m no longer as active here, nor do i currently write fic, i’ve wrestled with the repercussions of continuing to engage in the marauders/hp fandoms (such as just leaving this blog up and archiving my older fanworks here or on ao3 with disclaimers) after everything jkr has said and done (and continues to do) despite the extreme importance and comfort they once provided me. obviously, this decision has created a divide both in fan spaces and between average tumblr users over whether one should completely give up everything harry potter altogether or if you can denounce j*anne while still maintaining your presence in the fandom (either as a creator/artist/writer or just an observer) because it does not directly benefit the author monetarily as licensed merchandise and games, box office and book sales, or theme park attractions do.
the author has stated she sees any sort of support for her series as support for her beliefs or approval by fans that she’s justified in her behavior. i personally disagree with this, as i know better than she does how i feel about her politics and her bigotry, despite the fact that there is still an emotional attachment to fanon versions of her characters for me, and i already know she’d see all the ways in which i once enjoyed them as not supportive but mockery or bastardization or something. still, it must be taken into account. i don’t want to speak for minority groups i am not myself a part of on whether each individual is “valid” in reclaiming hp or not as that isn’t my place. as it is, i personally struggle enough with whether it’s okay to retain some sentimentality for the fandom and series at all as a queer person and whether i’m “trans enough” for it to be seen as justified. that is something we all must decide for ourselves and help each other to conclude. so although i’m not here to try and convince you one way or the other, i will recognize there IS an undeniable, tangible (if not financial) impact of creating fanworks and engaging in fandom practices. she has perpetuated so, so much harm, and her series itself was and has always been, rife with problematic themes, imagery, and worldbuilding. it is not enough to simply say you “reclaim” hp and put “jk sucks” in your bio; if you’re going to remain in the fandom you have to actively speak out against the systems she supports and upholds today and be critical of the flaws within the series itself. if you cannot completely let hp go right now, i encourage you to renounce jkr’s beliefs always, entirely stop supporting her through purchases or words, and contribute to lgbt/jewish/bipoc rights through donations to verified charities + legal support and/or their ability to survive and thrive through mutual aid funds so long as you continue to keep the hp series culturally relevant. it’s the least we can do, really.
of course i recognize this viewpoint will likely be upsetting to some who may want to block me. i completely respect that. i also welcome civil discussion in the replies, however i refuse to respond to discourse or trolling as that is a response to conflict i am actively trying to unlearn.
as always, terfs/bigots/homophobes/racists/antisemites are NOT welcome here

mixed feelings and complicated thoughts
Next week, 07-10 September, is BrickCon 2023, the longest-running LEGO fan exhibition in the United States. The convention is usually in Seattle, Washington, but this year, it's in Bellevue, which is perhaps a little bit closer to where I live. It's a wonderful convention and if you are local or have the ability to attend, I strongly recommend it :) Meanwhile. I am registered to display a MOC (My Own Creation). This will be my first ever public display and I'm a little bit nervous. I've built a pink castle defending against a skeleton army, which will likely be categorized into the "fantasy" display area. One of the other women in my LEGO Adult Fan of LEGO (AFOL) / LEGO User Group (LUG) posted elsewhere on social media that she would be displaying her "Umbridge House" and that it would probably be placed for display within the "fantasy" display area. I'm mildly concerned about how our displays might be placed near each other, as they are both pink and "fantasy". Why is this a concern for me? I'm part of the QUILTBAG (Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Lesbian, Transgender, Bisexual, Asexual/Agender/Aromantic, Gay) community and I don't feel comfortable around JKR/HP (abbreviated to avoid algorithms, henceforth known as "the garbage human") because of how damaging that author is to the entire community. The garbage human not only says and supports positions damaging to queer lives, but she is one of the only authors I've heard of who read her entire publication contract and kept her rights to her work. This means that for every HP toothbrush sold, the garbage human gets money. So while the LEGO Group is not giving the garbage human money directly, they are required to pay a certain profit/percent of the licensed LEGO they sell back to the owning company, in this case Warner Brothers, who then generates a royalty check back to the garbage human. The garbage human then uses the millions of dollars made in profit to purchase lobbyists all around the world. These lobbyists spend a great deal of time and effort drafting political bills in countries all over the world, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and a whole bunch of other countries, in order to specifically remove the rights of all QUILTBAG personnel. I have a really difficult time understanding how people can claim they love and support the QUILTBAG community only to actively give money to those who are using said money to take away rights and endanger lives. I know there's a lot of thoughts out there about how people have a right to like what they like and it's too much work for people to care about issues like this. I know many people who have a very powerful sense of nostalgia for HP. HP got a lot of people through some very tough times. But. The love/obsession of many of the fans often chooses to turn a blind eye to the actual and real damage and danger of financially supporting the garbage human. I know it's possible people don't understand that buying LEGO HP is giving the garbage human money to fund horrible things. Or maybe they don't care, as they can't actually see the damaging actions and they would rather remain ignorant. Or they know and just don't care because their own comfort and happiness is more important than "other" people's lives and rights. If I arrive at BrickCon and I find that I am displaying next to HP MOCs, is it fair for me to ask to be moved? I know this is a very sensitive topic and I am open to all well-thought-out and considerate comments. It's possible I'm missing something and I do appreciate the views of people who aren't me, so long as those comments are respectful.

I know you said you like to keep this blog on theme, but in light of that h*gwarts question, I have to know: how do you feel about trans people?
(I hope this doesn't sound rude. For context if you aren't aware, jk r*wling is possibly the biggest TERF alive today and has used h*rry p*tter money to fund anti-trans bills and legislations in Britain. Thus, anything relating to the books, movies, etc., has become known as a TERF dog whistle)
I have answered a similar question before and I have had mail and discussions with trans people and allies for various topics (i.e Greek pronouns, conditions in Greece etc). Again, the blog is a pro-positivity, inclusive space. Everyone is welcome to have a good time here, as long as they are not haters and exclusionists of any sort or anti-Greeks. Of course there are posts sometimes that are about sad topics / negativity but this is never targeted towards a particular group of people or well-meaning people.
I was a dedicated HP fan in childhood and puberty which explains why I know hp stuff and why I have opinions on the plot which had been formed long ago. However I had reached adulthood and completed the movie / book journey way before J*R became the type of person she is now or revealed her true face anyway. I am pretty sure I haven’t supported her financially or in any other way ever since she started her terf campaign. And even a little before that, because I had already sensed some off vibes.
I don’t know if old hp stuff is terf dog whistles though. Some of the readers are people who went through her work long before she went full asshole mode, like me, some are minors who are not aware of her beliefs or don’t yet understand these things well and other readers are people that don’t have Twitter / tumblr or they live outside the northwestern hemisphere and don’t know what she has apparently devoted her life to currently. I mean, if I wasn’t on tumblr, I wouldn’t have a clue either. Lets not go out there insulting people without asking what their own positions are first. That doesn’t go to you but to people extreme in their “holier than thou” attitude.
Anyway, that’s all for this.

That blazed post is giving me serious anxiety and I even cried. Am I really so horrible for liking HP? It helped me in the worst of times and I can't let it go. It'd be like letting go of my childhood friend. Idk why she who must not be named had to ruin it for us. Why couldn't she just stay quiet? I hope this shit is just on Tumblr and not irl .
OOC:
Short answer - You're not horrible. At all.
Long answer - It's nuanced. I know plenty of queer/marginalized/ liberal minded people who are still engaged in the fandom on their own terms. We are out there. We are inclusive and supportive.
Keep in mind a lot of these antis are extremely hurt. Many used to be hp fans and feel betrayed by the creator. They deal with that in different ways. I stopped buying anything that would support her financially, for example. Other people actively try to discourage anyone from engaging. And while I cannot dismiss anyone's individual choices or pain, I can be critical of people who try to control what other people like and how they process things.
Sometimes people compare the creator to Lovecraft, and while there are similarities, this isn't entirely the same issue. Lovecraft has been dead for a long time and you can become aquainted with Lovecraftian horror with the disclaimer at the beginning of the journey. There have been decades of processing and evolution. Many (most) hp fans were lured in and then a bomb was dropped. The creator is still on Twitter. It's harder to ignore. Former fans lash out.
I like Lord Voldemort. The character and fic were a key part of getting through some serious mental health shit in my teens. Also hp was my first real exposure to large scale world building, which impacted me greatly as a writer. So while I've lost connection with much of hp, I'm not letting go of this Volde-centric corner of fandom. And I don't feel bad about it in the slightest.
I think many (mostly younger) people today are (rightfully) horrified by the world and some of the people in it, and are therefore holding each other up to higher (and in many times impossible) standards. Some of these revelations are good. Others - such as fandom purity culture and "your fav is problematic" - is excessive. It's a trauma response, yes, but truly - I am much more worried about people's stances on say - the state of bodily autonomy in the US or the human rights violations in Iran than I am what their favorite fictional character is.
No one should be put on a pedestal. No one. Not your favorite author or celebrity, not your parents or other irl role models, not your partner, not even Mr Rogers. They will let you down. I've let people down in the past. I'll do it again - not intentionally, but that's not the point.
You can't live your life trying to justify your choices to as many people as possible. You can just live your life being the best person you can be according to your ideals. Be kind, open minded and accepting. Set boundaries with people you can't agree with and whose behavior is truly unacceptable. Allow yourself to change over time. Allow others to do the same. And for farts sakes, like whatever piece of fandom you want. Liking a book is not a moral judgement. Being a dick to others about what they like is.

You said you're busy, so feel free not to reply now (or ever lol), but what's the difference between supporting that wizard transmisogynistic antisemite and supporting something like, say, Disney? Genuine question. Aren't both bad because it's been proven their profits go straight to anti-LGBT laws? Or is it different? I hate both either way lol. Thanks!
I think the main difference is JKR is singularly making her entire platform about hating trans women, vocally encouraging others to do the same, and has boiled down her career to that one thing. Passively, she is doing OTHER egregious hateful things (mostly antisemitism but also homophobia and racism and more).
Disney is different because... Disney is buying every single thing. Lots of works that exist and were created outside of the Disney "mindset" (whatever that is) have been purchased by Disney. There are things streaming on Disney+ by people who would probably roll around in their graves if they knew who owned their work now.
Disney is harder to avoid in that way but it's also not one singular issue. It is a multiple of projects, some of which are affirming, some of which... are hateful and awful.
I personally do not consume much Disney branded content.
And I think people who worship at the altar of Disney often CAN end up identical (in behaviour and in harm) to HP-defenders.
But... idk... when it becomes less about actual creators and more about the people who end up owning their shit, it's harder. Like... most chain stores are donating to Republicans. I'm sure most streaming services are too. This does get closer to the "no ethical consumption under capitalism" thing where like... you can do the best you can to shop "well" but... corporations are all donating to whoever will protect their profit margins the most and will fund any law possible to get that going.
Corporations have such overwhelming nets they've thrown over hteir industries that it's hard to find anything that has escaped their grasp untainted. It's like... if someone selling their book lets it be distributed through amazon, do we immediately accuse them of supporting amazon exploiting and even killing employees?
It's more nebulous and I'm more willing to handwave (especially the more and more outside of the "Disney" brand Disney owned things get) but JKR isn't so nebulous. She is the creator of HP--the DIRECT creative mind of the entire IP. She is a bigot. The bigotry exists inside the work. The bigotry exists OUTSIDE the work. She specifically uses her platform to spread hate. Uses HP as part of her platform to do that, directly trying to indoctrinate fans into her mindset.
There is no sort of absolving quality to HP left. It isn't detached enough from her hatred to attempt any mental hoops to justify it.
It's not quite comparable to Disney which is a conglomeration of a lot of people who just have the same financier essentially.
If we're talking about specific Disney works that have hateful/prejudiced content in it, yeah it's a more similar comparison.
But also, even with that, I do recommend people do try to consume less Disney branded and even just Disney owned shit. There's more room for lenience in there--I don't think a parent letting their kid watch Moana is doing the same harm as the parent who reads their kid HP every night--but at the end of the dya aI will always say... look for more media on the margins.
Media produced by more independent workers strugglign to make ends meet. Media produced by people who have shit to say. Media with less direct connections to megacorporations who are all donating to the worst peopel on the fucking planet just so they can get more blood from the stones of society's creative soul

hi! due to what rupert said ( a tv show for the book etc ) and the games, i’ve seen so many people talk badly about HP, it breaks my heart, even tho i know they do it bc of that horrendous person ( fuck her, honestly ) how do you feel about it when you see the hate towards the series from people on the internet? i also have a irl friend who judges me a lot for liking the series and buying the game, the books etc. it’s just really hard for me to leave it behind, being something that has been with me for so long?
Personally, I’m the one telling people around me about the problems with JKR so that hasn’t been an issue for me. I haven’t financially supported neither HP nor anything related in years (game, movie, merch, etc). I wouldn’t buy anything related ever again either. These characters mean something beyond their creator for me and my interaction with HP content is solely through fandom. I’m okay with that and not relinquishing what we’ve reclaimed as queer fans. Me interacting with a self-contained queer fandom space, which constantly criticizes and holds JKR accountable, isn’t supporting her or the series imo. I’m good with that & will continue to educate IRL people about her actions and their consequences.
You don’t have to be though! This is a really personal topic. If interacting with HP distresses you, take a break or leave it. Your own wellbeing should always be the priority. I think critique of the series is really important though, especially reflecting the influence of JKR’s bigotry. There are so many fantastic analyses on the topic and they’re beneficial for media literacy in general in my opinion. Those have their place and shouldn’t get dismissed. There needs to be nuance though, I’m not gonna engage with someone telling me to “read another book lol”.
No offense to you at all, much love in fact, but I’m really tired of talking about this over and over again. :’)

🍃🕊🍃 Raising Confident Young Muslim Women 🍃
🍃 Young Muslim women, growing up in the West are, for the most part, encouraged to study, work hard, and develop careers to gain financial independence and contribute their skills to society. However, aside from the importance of educating oneself and establishing a career, it is also important for women to be confident in themselves and their abilities. Confidence is fundamental to fully contributing as active citizens and is a direct reflection of a supportive and nurturing upbringing. 🍃
🍃 Importance of Education 🍃
🍃 The importance of education, which was discussed in ‘Raising Youth to Contribute to the Community’, is essential for raising knowledgeable, confident, women. They can then better influence society through their discoveries, research, writing, lectures, teachings, and expertise. Even young women who choose to stay home and raise their children are in a greater position to impact and enrich their children’s lives by imparting knowledge to them. 🍃
🍃 In fact, the Holy Prophet (S) said,
🍃 “Asking for knowledge is a duty imposed on every Muslim. Verily God loves those who seek knowledge.” 🍃
Al-Kafi
(The Sufficient)
(Part One, p.30)
🍃 Muslim women are often misrepresented as uneducated, backward, oppressed, and invisible members of society. However, this hadith clearly illustrates that in Islam, obtaining knowledge is a duty assigned to all Muslims without distinguishing between male or female. In fact, Islamic history has numerous examples of pivotal women, who were not only incredibly educated, such as Lady Fatima al-Zahra (sa), but who also were famous for their stances against oppressive factions in their community, notably Lady Zainab (sa). Clearly, Muslim women have much to offer and contribute as citizens and are not discouraged from participating in society. 🍃
🍃 Belief in Oneself 🍃
🍃 Belief in one’s ability is crucial to the self-development of young women in order for them to achieve their full potential. This is where the support of the family is fundamental to their upbringing. Families must raise their daughters with the same fervor and dedication as their sons, just as our Holy Prophet (pbuh&hp), and Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (as) so gracefully raised theirs, with love, support, and a core belief that their existence was crucial to the society around them. 🍃
🍃 Lady Fatima al-Zahra (sa), for example, is the source of the lineage of the Prophet (pbuh&hp), and one of the flag bearers of his teachings, manners, discipline, and knowledge, and who has impacted the religion of Islam in the most fundamental way. We seek guidance needed to achieve nearness to God through her example and the examples of her progeny. 🍃
“We have granted you abundant virtue.”
Holy Quran
(108:1)
🍃 In this verse of the Holy Quran, the abundant virtue (al-kawthar) is an indirect reference to Lady Fatima (sa), as she is a spring of knowledge and the heir of the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hp) from whom our Imams originated. 🍃
🍃 Role Models 🍃
🍃 Very often, culture and unIslamic values pervade the manner in which young women are raised. We are taught at an early age about key Muslim women, such as Lady Asiya (sa), Lady Maryam (sa), Lady Khadija (sa), Lady Fatima al-Zahra (sa), and Lady Zainab (sa). Yet we do not always fully demonstrate this knowledge in our own lives. Most of us are aware of Lady Fatima (sa) having to defend her rights of inheritance, specifically the property of Fadak, which was gifted to her during her father’s (S) lifetime. How might we reflect and comprehend just how her stance against injustice might serve as a reminder for us? 🍃
🍃 Similarly, do we truly understand the gravity of Lady Zainab’s (sa) speech in the courtyard of Yazid, (a merciless and tyrannical ruler who was holding her and her family members captive)? How might we reflect on our own roles and duties within society using her as an example? Lady Zainab (sa) was not a voiceless, powerless, helpless Muslim woman. She operated within the framework of God’s Divine guidance while upholding tenets of justice and truth. 🍃
🍃 Confident Muslim Women 🍃
🍃 We are often fed a concept in the media of who a Muslim woman should be: voiceless, powerless, useless, and ignorant. Does this image truly reflect the legacy that women such as Lady Zainab and Lady Fatima (pbut) have left for us to emulate? These two exemplary women took action when needed. They were vocal and not silent in the face of injustice. They were confident in their belief, faith, and in themselves while they had the support of their families and followers. They were raised to be strong women with the foundation of Islamic beliefs and manners embedded firmly in their hearts. 🍃
🍃 Therefore, it is the acquisition of knowledge, strong faith in God, and a supportive upbringing that fosters confidence in oneself. These qualities are needed to know one’s rights, to fight for them, and also to participate in righteous causes. Both Lady Fatima al-Zahra (sa) and Lady Zainab (sa) chose not to remain silent and allow their rights to be taken from them. Through their firm belief in God and conviction of justice, they made their positions clear and thereby created a roadmap to guide future generations of young women. 🍃
🍃 Young Muslim women, growing up in the West are, for the most part, encouraged to study, work hard, and develop careers to gain financial independence and contribute their skills to society. However, aside from the importance of educating oneself and establishing a career, it is also simultaneously important for women to be confident in themselves and their abilities. Confidence is fundamental for fully contributing as active citizens and is a direct reflection of a supportive and nurturing upbringing. 🍃

I have a question about boycotting million and\or billionaires. How much financial damage can it do? Is the aim political damage? Asking because I've seen 'Boycott Jkr to stop her financial influence on British politics' stuff around and I'm just wondering if it will actually have an effect on her financially? The women has millions of not billions of pounds and I'm just not sure a boycott, at what is probably the tail end of her career, can do. I personally don't buy HP merch because I don't like her anymore and I don't want to show her any support, but it's more political for me than actually trying to un-millionaire her.
You are one smart cookie, my dove! For you're right: what we as individuals do to boycott millionaire creators like J.K. Rowling will have very little affect on their bottom line. But boycotting is not without merit. Lemme 'splain!
Why it won't affect her income:
- She's already a billionaire. And when you have a billion dollars, it's easy to KEEP a billion dollars even if you never work for another dollar again in your lifetime. That's because of the power of compound interest through investing. Rowling doesn't NEED your money anymore, because her own money just keeps replicating itself.
- Her legacy is secure. In 50 years, people will look back at her transphobia the same way they look at Tolkien's racism and say "she was a product of her time." Her transphobic ideology will not age well because acceptance of transgender people is on the rise. But historically speaking, people might go gently on her because right now... she's sadly not alone in her transphobia. The arc of history is long, but it bends towards justice.
- Rich people will always have a disproportionate say in political policy until world governments put laws in place to mitigate their power. In the United States, that means overturning Citizens United (among other things). I'm sure the UK has a similar fight to get money out of politics, and you should look into it and get involved!
Why a boycott still matters:
- THE WORLD IS WATCHING. The arc of history doesn't just bed towards justice on its own. It gets BENT that way by people like you who are willing to make a fuss against discrimination and injustice. J.K. Rowling is such a famous, powerful person that I'm POSITIVE a lot of people who never even knew transgender people existed are being educated on trans rights by the outcry against her. You need to raise your voice every time she says something transphobic, to make sure her viewpoint is countered where the ignorant can see and learn.
- She's such a beloved figure for so many people, and has a reputation for teaching about love, friendship, acceptance, and being anti-bigotry. Her hypocrisy when it comes to trans rights is a startling contrast to this reputation. So boycotting her products now is a way of saying "It's not good enough to say you're against bigotry. You have to live that principle in every way, and be willing to learn and adjust over time."
- Again, this is a reeeeeeeally public fight. There are people out there who are creating content that is directly influenced by this fight! Boycotting a transphobic creator shows others who are less successful that there are consequences for transphobia, and they will learn and adjust accordingly.
Anyway, I hope that helps kiddo! I know the boycott is not for everyone (a friend has massive Harry Potter tattoos she's not covering up, for example). We ourselves wrote a couple of Harry Potter themed articles a few years ago, and we're leaving them up. Context is important, and we don't believe in sugarcoating our history. Some stuff doesn't age well, and sometimes we all make mistakes! But we're learning.
I think talking about this stuff, even in the vein of Your Fave Is Problematic can only be helpful. As painful as the boycott and discussion is right now, I'm optimistic about a more trans-inclusive future.

Pirate, support fanartists/fanwriters/giffers/etc who pirate, and do not purchase anything that puts a cent in his pocket.
That's how you separate the art from the artist when there isn't a fundamental issue with their works. It's literally that easy.
"Butbutbut Harry Potter" JKR may not benefit financially when you pirate her IP, but the thoughts she puts into your head through them are just as bad. That's why separation doesn't work with HP. I thought we all knew this. When there's nothing wrong with the product, then the artist gains nothing from you pirating it.
Reality check to (former?) fans of Neil Gaimen, you funded what he did. Your consumption of his work helped him abuse and exploit, both economically and sexually, incredibly vulnerable women. You don't own The Sandman, you don't own Good Omens, Neil Gaimen does, and to the extent you have continued to stan this despicable man and his creations, you have contributed to the wealth that allows him to hurt people. If you're still identifying yourself as a fan of Good Omens...God I just don't know how you sleep at night. The separating of artist and art is only valid if the artist gains no benefit from your engagement.

what i don't get about ppl who continue to insist on consuming jk rowling's work is the amount of loopholes they'll go through to continue supporting the franchise without financially supporting rowling herself, like it's fine to read the Baby Cop Wizard Books as long as no one gets a dollar from it but like
i loved those books as a kid and even as an awkward adolescent, to a totally obsessive degree that only kids really can achieve. and i stopped reading/watching/interacting with the franchise entirely because rowling's politics make it impossible to enjoy the franchise at all because ultimately it's way more important to me not to a) fund and b) support in any way a person who has made a fortune spreading some questionable tropes and themes and then used that money to deny people access to medical care
like if you're not cool with her politics and how she uses her money to fund far-right ventures, you should be uncool consuming her work AT ALL. it should bring you no pleasure whatsoever. if it does, i assume that you're not uncomfortable with her politics per say but you are really uncomfortable with other people thinking you may not really care how she thinks one way or another so long as you can immerse yourself in the HP universe
