You've changed, man. I don't know what it is but some time in the past six months your shitposting got a bitter edge to it. Sure you could blame the political climate or world events on it but...I dunno. I used to scroll your blog to momentarily escape the hardships of today but now it feels like even you're not a safe place any more. I wish you luck on your journeys onwards but I'm sorry to say I cannot travel with you any more. Be well, puki, and I hope whatever troubles you passes.
Escapism is important and I try to offer that to a degree, but ultimately, I am a person. I experience hardships, I empathize with the worsening conditions of my world. As long as I care about things external to myself, I will subtlety, or blatantly express them in some way in my blog, which Iâve done for years, not merely 6 months.
Unbeknownst to you, these concerns are often the inspiration for some of my most beloved posts.
Youâre free to leave of course, if my 1 serious post out of every 30 fucks your day up that badly, then please, feel free! - I simply donât see my blog as escapist fluff, it never has been, even if that is often the outcome. My page has always been about my interests, and I just so happen to enjoy making people laugh.
I see it more as a fun place to hang out and express the feelings I feel inclined to express, most of which are fun and goofy, some of which are not. I love our little playful back-and-forths, and I enjoy seeing your insights, even if some of you are fucking stupid as shit. Sometimes I just like using you guys as little guinea pigs, testing my odd expressions out on you, and sitting back and seeing the outcome.
Ultimately, I try to balance balance 3 things on my page:
Comedy, as you know - I like making jokes, I like testing them out on people. Even if they suck, I like writing them regardless. Sometimes I sit back after writing something I know objectively sucks, hit send, and watch as everyone tells me how much it sucks. It brings me joy.
A desire for money - because if not, I wouldn't be able to make posts half as often as I do (ie, shirt sales, promoting my music, etc) - Sometimes that anxiety for money also bleeds into my posts, it has for years; and I hold back from being even more desperate about money than I feel I should be sometimes.
And the point you brought up: The occasional comment on something real that matters to me. - Over the past 3 years, if not longer, Iâve made a few uncharacteristically-serious statements on things like Covid, Gaza, The Presidency, hell, even the indigenous people of Australia... and more.
Why do I feel inclined to discuss these things? Because I want to. My page has always been about what I want. Fortunately for you, what I usually want to do is to make you laugh! But sometimes I wish to express other feelings, because I have a platform that allows my voice to travel further than that of others!
For those angry at all the qualms I don't bring up, try to understand my balancing act, as someone who understands your desire for escapism, and the comfort that it brings you. If the veil falls, remember, we are of like-company - - and maybe, this veil was only ever in your head to begin with.

long awaited part three of lowselfesteem!reader and simon
part two
invisible clothes
thatâs what you called them, the rags you don when you have to integrate with the general population but you would much rather not be noticed. clothing that is so bland that it isnât nice enough catch an eye but not hideous enough to catch any negative attention
you had told simon about them once, when he called you out on wearing them every time you stepped out in public, including your dates with him. especially since he knew you had a very elaborate wardrobe with a tailored sense of style
clearly they arenât invisible enough to hide you from johnnyâs guilty eyes from across the store aisle. you sigh when he comes up to you, tapping your shoulder to get your attention. he shifts uncomfortably on his feet
âI know ye probably hate ma guts, lass but ye should ken that simon shut down all of that bet talk after your first date. Ah just bring et up to annoy âim.â johnny says, with a nervous chuckles at the end. you donât laugh alongside him
âokay, fair enough. look, heâs miserable without ye! he comes to the pub just to get pished and mope about how he fucked it all up with ye.â johnny continues, a pleading look in his eyes, âheâs supposed to he coming by to drop off some things of yours tomorrow. just hear him out, please, lass.â
you roll your eyes at him, continuing to grab what you need from the shelves in front of you. not even bothering to look him in the eyes when you finally begin to speak
"why should I? why am I always expected to think of other people even when they hurt me? you and simon didn't think about me or my feelings when you made your stupid bet. neither of you stopped to consider that I was just a person who simply wanted to be left alone." you say with a scoff, "he'll be lucky if I don't slam the door in his face."
johnny shifts on his feet, looking down at the floor since he feels too uncomfortable to look directly at you, "fair enough. take care've yerself, hen."
you bite back tears as you watch him skulk off in the corner of your eye. you stand there for a few more minutes, staring at the stacked shelves in front of you to distract you from the war raging inside of your head
-
it's late at night, nearly midnight, when there's a knock at your door. you let out a sigh, already knowing who was disturbing your doomscrolling at this hour. and when you open the door, you see him. youâre brooding prick of an ex-boyfriend. he at least has the decency to look guilty, like a dog caught ripping up the couch cushions
except he wasnât a dog, he was the love of your life. and your heart isnât so easily replaced like a cushion. though he definitely treated it like somewhere to rest his head
âhey.â
you scoff, youâre not sure why. there isnât anything inherently wrong with what he said but it still annoyed you. he annoyed you. with his stupid stormy eyes and his stupid jokes and freckled shoulders that you used to connect like dots late at night
âjust give me my stuff and go, simon. donât have time for this bullshit.â
he doesnât flinch. he saw that hit coming, and sometimes you gotta let them swing at you especially when you know that you deserve much worse
the exchange is quick, a box with small memories passed over to you. a couple items of clothing, a book and some toiletries. before you can slam the door in his face, he jams his heavy boot into it
âwait⊠love, I⊠thereâs somethinâ else. I never gave it to you but itâs yours. got it for you and Iâll never give it to anyone else.â
the glare you give him only falters when he places a small velvet box in your hand, he pauses the speech you can definitely feel coming on. looking at you expectantly to open it. you do, waiting for him to laugh at you when you find nothing in there. ridicule you for even thinking he would consider making you his wife
but all he does it look on solemn, the beautiful ring twinkling as a devastating reminder of what could have been
âI knoâ I âave no right to ask. I wouldnât insult you like thaâ lovie. you can hate me, I deserve it. but you donât deserve it. I wonât let you hurt yourself over what I did. you deserve to know the real extent of how bad I fucked up. maybe itâll help to look at thaâ ring and know that Iâll spend the rest of my life having to know I lost the woman who should be my wife.â
thereâs no chance to respond, not like youâd know what to say anyway,
âIâm sorry.â
and then heâs gone.

I Want You...Professionally
Masterlist
Jamie Tartt x fem! PA reader
TW: cursing
A/N: A tiny little fluff scenario. Just for the vibes.
It was vacation time for Jamie's favorite assistant. Well, his only assistant. She had organized everything, a temporary assistant for Jamie, a good book she could read while relaxing on her couch, but she obviously didn't calculate Jamie's brattiness.
Y/N had barely been out for a week when the first text came in.
Jamie: Who the fuck is this Jerry lad?
She frowned at the message before another one followed.
Jamie: Heâs in my kitchen, Y/N. My sanctuary. Whatâs next? My fucking shower?
Jamie: If he touches my shampoo, Iâm calling the police.
She sighed, rubbing her temple. She had warned Jamie that a temp assistant would be sent to work for him while she was on leave. He probably didn't listen. It was supposed to be a good thingâsomeone to help manage his schedule, make sure he made it to training on time, and prevent situations exactly like this, all while Y/N could chill for like a week. Just one week, please!
Instead, it seemed like Jamie had decided to make it his personal mission to be as difficult as humanly possible.
Y/N: Heâs literally just there to help. Be nice.
Jamie: Define ânice.â
Y/N: Donât scare him off in under a week.
Jamie: Cannot promise that babe.
It did not take a week.
It took two days.
By that time Y/N got an angry phone call from Rebecca. Jamie had apparently run through the poor temp guy so fast that Rebecca had personally told her, âYou need to deal with your idiot. Right now!â
And if the exasperation in her voice hadnât already told Y/N everything she needed to know, the look on the tempâs face when she arrived at the club to talk to him, spoke louder than words could.
The man looked exhausted. Defeated. Like he had seen things no personal assistant should ever have to see.
"Jerry, hey how are things?" Y/N approached the man carefully and spoke in a soft voice. Damn, he looked like he was about to break.
âI canât do it, Y/Nâ he had said, shaking his head. âHeâs impossible.â
âYeah,â she had sighed. âHe does that sometimes.â
"He sleeps bottomless. BOTTOMLESS! He told me that I have the energy of a wet paper towel. And he only ever eats protein bars."
Jerry started crying out of frustration and hugged Y/N's shoulder, a little too tight. Nice, her favorite blouse is now tear-stained. Fuckin' Tartt.
Y/N patted Jerry's back awkwardly. "Shit, okay. I'll deal with it."
So when Jamie showed up at her flat unannounced that eveningâbecause of course he didâshe was more than ready to deal with him.
âJamie,â she deadpanned, crossing her arms. âWhat the fuck.â
Jamie blinked at her. âWhat?â
âYou terrorized him.â
âNo, I didnât.â
âYou made him cry, Jamie.â Y/N deadpanned.
Jamie scoffed. âI barely said anythin'. He cried over one little comment.â
âYou told him he had âthe energy of a wet paper towel.ââ
Jamie shrugged. âHe did.â
âJamie.â
He sighed dramatically, flopping onto her couch like he had just run a marathon. âNah, you don't get it, t'was a whole nightmare. He was just there all the time. Following me around, tellinâ me what to do, actinâ like he knew me.â
She narrowed her eyes. âYou mean like how I do my job?â
âNo.â He shook his head. âNot like you.â
âOh, really?â She crossed the room, standing in front of him. âBecause youâve never had a problem with me following you around before and telling you what to do. But suddenly, this guy shows up, and you turn into a little shit?â
Jamie rolled his eyes. âI am a little shit. Always been one.â
She huffed. âJamie.â
âWhat?â He ran a hand through his hair, exhaling sharply before looking up at her.
"Why is it different with me, tell me." She put her hand on his arm lovingly, trying to coax the answer out of him.
Jamie was frustrated. "I don't know. Maybe because you get me and... And maybe I donât want someone else bossing me around, yeah? Maybe I just want you.â
The words hit her like a fucking freight train.
Jamie mustâve realized what he had said because his mouth snapped shut, his jaw tensing.
A beat of silence.
Thenâ
âIn, like, a professional way?â Jamie said as more of a question than a statement.
âJamie,â she said, with a warning voice.
He exhaled, shaking his head like he wanted to take it all back. âForget it. I'll go apologize to the guy.â
âNo Jamie, wait.â She stepped closer. "I mean you should definitely eventually apologize, you made the guy cry for god sake! But wait..."
Jamie met her gaze, something uncertain flickering behind his eyes.
She licked her lips, suddenly hyperaware of how close he was. âYou want me?â
Jamieâs throat bobbed. âYeah.â
Her heart stupidly skipped a beat. âIn, like, a professional way.â
His lips twitched, but it wasnât quite a smirk. âSure. That.â
Her breath caught.
And then, because Jamie Tartt was a menaceâbecause he could never just say something and leave it at thatâhe tilted his head, voice dropping to something dangerously soft.
âYou okay, love?â
She couldâve said yes.
She shouldâve said yes.
Instead, she let out a sharp breath and muttered, âFuck you.â
Jamie grinned and turned toward the door. âKnew it. I'll be off then, apologizing to Berry.â
"His name is Jerry!"
"I knew that!"
The silence that followed after Jamie left wasnât uncomfortable, but it was full of things left unsaid. Y/N thought about his words and their meaning a lot. Maybe I just want you.
Maybe they werenât ready for the next step yet, and maybe they were, but for now, they both knew one thingâneither of them was going anywhere.

A plea
Readers! Billionaire-haters! Comrades! I have a request for you, from the bottom of my self-published indie author heart:
Please buy your books from places other than Amazon.
I am not saying do not buy books. I am definitely not saying pirate books (authors need to be paid in order to keep writing). I am just asking you to shift your purchasing to a non-Amazon platform. Any of the non-Amazon platforms.
We all know that Bezos is using his bajillions of dollars to make the world an actively worse place. We know he's sucking up to Trump because all billionaires are the same, and all they care about is their money. We know he's at least partially to blame for this second Trump presidency. I think the world would be a much better place if Amazon didn't exist.
I hate Amazon and Bezos as much as it's possible to do, but I literally can't survive as a self-published author without selling on Amazon. I earned $1094.26 in royalties (through Draft2Digital) in January, and $863.46 of that was from Amazon sales. Even with the criminally low royalties I get from Audible because I choose to sell elsewhere instead of locking myself into their monopoly, I get between $200-300 a month in royalties from them as opposed to $75-150 a month from Author's Republic, which publishes my audiobooks to everywhere else on the internet.
I hate depending on Amazon, but I can't quit Amazon unless readers do.
My plea to readers is this: Get off Amazon. Get off Kindle. See if you can buy books directly from the independent authors you like (like through my shop on my website!). If you depend on Kindle Unlimited or Audible subscriptions to keep up with your voracious reading habits, try your local library instead. You can get so many books and audiobooks through Libby!
If I was getting 80% of my sales through avenues other than Amazon, it would be easy to take the financial hit and drop them. Currently it's the other way around, and unfortunately I do still need money to live.
I know for many people doing a complete Amazon boycott is not possible. I still occasionally use Amazon for stuff like printer toner, or camp chairs for a concert on short notice, or other housewares I would be happy to buy in an actual store except that in-person shopping has been so degraded by Amazon that's no longer an option. I'm not perfect, and I'm operating within a system that is stacked against me.
But books aren't any of those things. They're not two-day free delivery on groceries and pantry staples for a disabled person who can't safely leave the house. They're not a houseware that you'd have to drive a full hour to buy in person from the one shop that still has it available. There are so, so many other options available in the world for book purchasing, even if you don't have access to a cool local bookstore.
Even if you can't get to a Barnes & Noble.
Even if you don't have a good local library.
There are OPTIONS.
(I, for one, love Bookshop.org, but just look at the Books2Read link for Red, the Wolf, and the Woods! There are 14 non-Amazon retailers, plus I sell direct! Bookshop has just launched ebook sales to support local bookstores, too!)
Please, consider changing your book shopping habits! Ask your friends to change their book shopping habits! It's a small thing, but it's a small thing that means a big improvement for authors, and for the world.
Thank you.

tabs w tabs under tabs.
Platonic connections do get shafted very badly by the narrative, huh? Arguably the Grayson family dynamic does get a decent spotlight, but Debbie is pretty significantly changed from her role in the comic, so her relationship with Mark is new to the adaption as well as her overall dynamic with Noaln.
Y'know, I didn't even think about the 'no choice/expectation' angle of the relationship? Like, Mark spends his whole life thinking he's gunna be a Hero Like Dad, and in his personal life suddenly he's got Girl Who Likes You For Sure So You Better Date Her. Like. Where is your choice in the matter. Half tempted to do a 'he and Amber work shit out or at the very least he shelves Eve's interest in him and just does literally anything else' fic bc of what he knows. Like yeah bud, it's okay to do something that isn't predetermined.
Screw going on a date, just hit up taco tuesday with Kate and talk about being a civilian vs being a hero.
A hero's sense of bodily autonomy must be seriously borked in Invincible universe, since most of them ARE lab experiments. And Rex definitely seems like the kind of person who wouldn't let things go that easily. Why wouldn't he be mercilessly weird about? Why wouldn't his fucked up feelings about it spill out over onto Amanda? Like, hey, if you date him, at least you'll know when he gets older he'll look like this. if you suck my dick it's the same dick so it doesn't count as cheating : ) Like. That would could AND SHOULD lbr get real fucking weird with how he acts around him. Or am I supposed to go with him having one outburst before just going 'I'm okay actually (internally screaming)'. But yeah, why AREN'T every member of GoG now worried about what he'd do to them without their consent/knowing? Did the GDA figure out it was Robot who let the Mauler Twins out in the first place? I mean he knew where they were and arrested them once he got what he wanted, and there ain't no way they aren't talking about who they worked for? Ain't no way ppl don't realize it was them who helped Rudy out, right ?? Right? ??
Imagine Debbie having to sit Mark down like 'I know you're a hero but I can't have you freeloading on me when I'm 70. Please get a job that actually pays you'. What's the living at home still culture of heroes? For the non-indestructible ones, how do they cover all those damn medical bills? Does Art run a special payment plan on suits?? how much do those indestructible suits cost?? why isn't he outfitting the fire department ?? does he ?? I do love the throwaway line that implies he also outfits anti-heroes/villains tho. Like. I'm neutral. I just make clothes. bruh. Darkwing fought some of your clients ?? bc he was willing to go after other heroes or bc they were doing crime ?? Art explain.
Mark seeking a mentor/refusing mentorship after his dad would have been neat. I saw someone say he and Immortal had a parental thing and I just squinted at my screen like ??? where ??? where do you see that ??
Also, I will laugh and laugh and laugh forever about the show giving me just enough rope to hang the entire Levy incident on Immortal lol Like, bro really went to stalk a recently injured TEENAGER to yell at him rather than do his job scouting the ruins of a fight HIS TEAM should have been at to begin with, and BOTH survivors of the blast got away to wreak more havoc. You suck bro.
It's like, I get it to some degree, the greater global stuff isn't what the narrative is focusing on - this is adapted from a 20 year old comic- but like you're changing mediums! You're tweaking the story ! Give us a throwaway line about how this world operates! One pissy comment from someone about Cecil/the GDA being the real shadow government, borders melted long ago ! Yet, the one line we kind of get about stuff, is Bulletproof calling out Cecil for only being interested in saving white Americans! And it's like. if that comment wasn't total snark, does that mean Cecil IS hoarding very important global resources to protect a small population? How many other organizations are trying to do the same? Does he just have the monopoly on power right now because he got control of GoG? Also still baffled that Immortal cared so much to yell at Shapesmith about AMERICANS getting left behind on Mars and not just, y'know, HUMANS. Why was that an important factor in the anger Immortal. Why.
Are there incentives to try and get superheroes to have kids in your country?? Recruiters?? We'll pay your bills if you keep us alive and ONLY us? Live here for free, but you work for us kind of shit. Has to be.
Debbie being so chill with Mark going into space bc as a toddler the damn GoG where taking him around the planet doing insane shit with him in the back seat lol There had to have been some Incident with Cecil. Girl you just yelled at a man taking medical care of your comatose husband. 'You have some nerve' she yells at Cecil the moment he shows his face. SOME NERVE? About what? What happened between you two????
Like I'd love to poke more at her sense of physical danger in the hero world. I lover her ambivalence about the destruction of the white house, and Nolan going into alien portals being Tuesday, like- does she have a weird bubble in her brain that bad things happen To Other People? Arguably she had a bit of one for Nolan that burst when he was in the coma, but how much does that extend to what she thinks could physically happen to her? I do love how willing she is to full on confront Nolan about stuff and part of my brain just wants to be like 'that's a sign of a healthy relationship, being able to bring up your concerns w your partner' and the other half of my brain is just like 'Debbie isn't the least bit hesitant about confronting a massive brick shit house of a guy ?? does she just have no sense of personal danger ?? what was her upbringing ???' or am I suppose to conclude that in a superhero world where crazy shit happens all the time People Are Just Like That, bc yeah, you could die in an alien swarm invasion so why hold back talking to the people who could physically hurt you ! There's men running around with canons welded to their arms ! you got nothing to lose !
While I'm not too familiar with the DCU- your batfam meta posts are intiguing- so in transfering some of the broader strokes from them- I think you tackling a 'Mark isn't Nolan's biological son' fic would be fascinating. Sort of a step to the side of the 'what if Mark never got his powers' fic that sometimes pop up in the fandom
OOOOOO chewing on this currently, hm, the much a distinct flavor of exactly what youâre talking about, but the potential for more family drama depending on WHO knows. Does Mark know?? Is he waiting every day only to be crushed? Does he confused non-Debbie features with Nolanâs? I suppose Iâm not the most enthusiastic about non-power AUs, but I think thereâs something very fun to explore about Mark having to settle with, if he knows all his life, he will never have powers? I think the trajectory of his dreams will obviously shift, I can see him still having that distinct fatherly idolization, but perhaps embraces being useful to the GDA? Cecilâs number one internâonly internâcurtesy of nepotism, ha! There is something tickling me about Mark taking the Robin Route/Role for the Teen Team in terms of having no powers, just insane skills, BUT thereâs something way more delicious about intern Mark when s1e01 happens and Mark tries snooping around to find out the truth about what happened to his Dad.
I wonder if, with Mark having a whole another father, if theyâre more or less distant relationship, depending on WHEN Nolan entered Markâs life? Like if Debbie met Nolan later for this, or just for fun, they dated once, separated (Mark being born during then), then they happened to stumble into each others lives again and Markâs already been born, anywhere from tween to teenager so thereâs a gap in how close they are. I feel like one important aspect of the whole Family Drama is how close theyâre supposed to be, a functional, loving family turned upside down? So I wonder what more distance does. I wonder how Nolan copes when his family is entirely human and he canât project onto Mark.
I love thinking about these, omg.
#invincible chatter#tbh eventually we're going to fall into the AND ANOTHER THING#in the tags too I feel like where even more meta commentary is going to take place down here#the threads are STILL multiplying

I was just ambushed within the turbulent halls of my own mind by some headcanons about rye ingellvar's childhood that did 15000000 points of psychic damage to me and my heart personally and also made me almost sure of how I want to play it all at the end (very very differently from how I imagined going in!). some 'oh holy fuck this changes everything' rocking my own world bullshit going on in my neurons right now I'm reeling
#I'm sorry to say that despite what I expected I think the dread wolf might be going down violently on my first run???#not because *I* love solas any less but because of who rye is and some of the twists I know happen down the line#which does make for a neat thing b/c I meant to play the crow I'm going with second as initially incredibly hostile#and then growing to feel for him and redeeming him at the end.#so if rye starts out very reasonable and sympathetic and then is brought to 'haha. no. fuck you forever for that in particular' at the end#...a pleasing cosmic symmetry in it I must admit. perfect and also makes me feel a bit sick#I'll try to put together something coherent eventually but for now#it's sort of a 'my name is ellaryen ingellvar you killed the guy#that my brain went 'close enough welcome back beloved and much missed deceased father figure' over. prepare to despair and die'#I think just the killing part might not have done it but everything that comes after? rye is a chill guy until he finally decides#that enough is fucking *enough*. and that was the most enough of all time for them#it also explains rye's accent (one of his primary caregivers growing up was a dwarf)! so many birds with one stone here#also I am so fucking sad now and I did it entirely to myself. I love fiction I love games (embarassingly genuine)#dragon age#dragon age: the veilguard#dragon age: the veilguard spoilers#dragon age spoilers#oc: ellaryen ingellvar#thank god that the romanced solas playthrough is the second one tho that does make things less dire haha#adaar would have given it the good old college try to get solas to change his mind right to the end I think#but even his capable hands and politician's mind could not hold back the sheer beware the fury of a patient man storm#that is about to hit solas for the shit he just pulled. I think rye and solas are -- as it turns out -- TOO alike in many ways#...solas buddy I'm so sorry I'll come back for you on the second playthrough and make it right I swear fhsak#it's just that a second dead dwarf dad has joined the chat to haunt the narrative (and this time it's fucking personal frfr)#it's almost scary how quick I've gotten attached to my rook tho. I've waited A DECADE to save this bald elf man from himself#and then rye shows up with steel in his normally kind eyes going 'no. I want that fucker *dead*'. and I just go anything for you babyboy#I'll see what we can do. unspeakable stuff

#okay but reading this Belloc essay on Austen really made something click in my mind#and itâs because of something he said#which is that women care more about what men think of them generally#(as a general rule. not all the time. etc.)#and men care more about the opinion of the one woman they care about#like women do care (as a first instinct at least) what every man she meets thinks of her#but men are mostly indifferent. until theyâre NOT.#which makes women more vulnerable to a greater number of people#but men are MORE painfully vulnerable to the woman whose opinion they care about#and I donât actually know that that vulnerability only extends to a woman they are attracted to/feel romantic feelings for#I think if they just think well of you as a person you (a woman) have a lot of power over them#which is sooooo interesting and makes so much sense!!!! and is something Iâve sort of been dancing around with teaching#like. a lot of the boys I teach come to care about what I think about them#which doesnât mean they all have a crush on me. though that step can be super easy and super small#hence the need for the boundaries of steel etc. but it does mean that they care what I think about them!#and Iâve always felt that instinctively and felt that I had to be so gentle with them because the power to crush them is mine if I so choose#donât let me overstate it. it doesnât happen all the time or anything close to it. but the thing about me being a teacher is that#they are forced to know me not just in a surface-level way. simply because I spend so much time with them#and talk to them a lot!#ANYWAY. enough about me but yeah this hit me so hard and of course exceptions exist#and/or endless variations on this exist because people are unique and surprising and also everything is changing all the time#etc. etc. but there is something to this I think! and you know what#itâs so interesting because that base-level instinct for women (allowing it to be a thing I mean) can be grown out of#I have trained myself out of/maturity has helped me leave behind that immediate female instinct#of being hurt at the idea that this random waiter (for example) is indifferent towards me. Iâve come to accept it#the instinct is still there!!! because imo women are always scanning and searching and sizing up. and also we are so open to being won over#if that makes sense? which is why insta comments complaining about how only good looking men get away with things like. PLEASE.#there are so many medium-ugly men who get married. itâs the average because the average woman is prettier than the average man#(this is not an insult) women CAN be and usually are so open to being surprised. won over. moved by the simple fact that a guy likes them#and men are not like that. but my point is: men donât grow out of caring if they care. when they care they care sooooooo much. anyways yeah

The worst thing about suffering is that it still hurts when the danger is over but no one cares about it anymore because it shouldn't hurt. No one will ever say "I'm sorry that happened to you" especially when they barely say "I'm sorry that's happening."
#Okay to tb btw all the personal stuff is in the tags#Like. Not eating for a week because you couldn't get groceries hurts#and people will say 'oof sorry that's happening' but then#after you're able to get food no one will ever say 'I'm sorry that happened' even though you think about it and hurt from it constantly.#No one will ever say ':( that must have been so hard' because you're fine now right???? No psychological damage there?????#This example is stupid but I do think about it every time I feel hungry. I told people I wasn't able to get groceries#and there was no food in my house. And they said. Oof.#Instead of idk Oh God Are You Okay ??#No one cares when you've been abused your entire life and behave the way you do out of genuine terror because your brain is fucked forever#They don't say 'I'm sorry that happened it must have been really scary to turn you into Such An Asshole. I pity you like a dog :('#Speaking of man everyone loves fucked up abused terrified dogs and wants to be the one who makes them open up#And shows them that people can be good and kind and that touch doesn't have to hurt#But everyone is scared of fucked up abused terrified people#Humans are capable of harm even more than dogs and fear is understandable but.#Can you please call me good boy and shush me and tell me nothing's going to hurt me and let me curl up on your lap#And not hit me if I get scared and start to growl and feed me good and take me on walks and play with me#Even though I'm not very fun to play with and I'm still learning what's fun and what's mean and what's a toy and what's a hand#Plleeeaaase don't be jealous of a dog that doesn't eat good don't say 'tch he's so thin what am I doing wrong'#I want to eat good and grow and gain fat and be warm and be comfortable I don't want this#Don't say 'if abused dogs don't eat good then I don't deserve to either' no no no no eat good so you can take care of us both#Please please please I learned so many tricks to make people happy and call me smart but I don't actually know how to do anything I'm#Literally like such a stupid dog it takes me like one day of no one paying attention to me for me to become un-housebroken#I make a lot of mistakes even though I know better or I really should know better#And sometimes do things wrong on purpose to get attention either yelling or showing me how to do it right#But most of the time I genuinely don't know how to do stuff because I was never taught or I was taught and#My previous owners said 'this is how it is. It is this way because it is and it is forever. The answer is Because.'#'now quit asking repetitive questions before I pop you'#If I do something Because and not know the reason why I'm doing it that's not learning that's acting#Especially habits taught specifically to hurt me and not being allowed to question it or know why I'm being hurt#Oh my god I acted out so much when I was younger and all my friends were so disgusted and hurt by me and yelled at me every day

This new OFMD season has me wondering more about how Hollywood treats actors' bodies, because just within this cast it's already striking me as inconsistent. CW for talking about body types, weight, body image, stuff like that y'all.
Just to start us off, we here at BringingHometheRain Blogging Inc. believe no body type is inherently good or bad. Fat, skinny, doughy, jacked, whatever. Bodies are bodies. I believe that, but obviously the people who make movies and tv shows don't believe that, or movies and tv shows would look a lot different in the year of our lord 2023.
OFMD started off, like, actually pretty progressive for a romcom in 2022. Your romantic leads are skinny/doughy guys in their late 40s! A fat Black man is also portrayed as a romantic interest, with no derogatory fat jokes! The other pairing is two gay guys who are not jacked dudes, they're just dudes! One of them has a speech impediment and it's never played for laughs! We're doing great!
And coming into this I had already noticed a divide between actors based mainly in the UK and actors based mainly in the US. My experience of British television is that the actors tend to look more like average people, and US-based actors tend to be skinnier and more muscular. Especially over the last decade-ish, actors in US films and tv have gotten noticeably more muscular, to a level that "normal" people don't tend to reach unless their main hobby is Gym (and even then). I haven't spent sufficient time watching NZ/Aussie tv and movies to really have a feel for what the general expectations for actors' bodies seem to be in that region of the biz. Also this is not, like, a hard-and-fast set of rules I'm proposing here, it's just a trend I've noticed from watching a lot of tv and movies.
So last year with season 1 we had our Stiddies moment and all that stuff I mentioned above and that was great for everyone. And I imagined to myself around the start of season 2 when Con started posting workout stuff on insta that they were making a good portion of the cast work out for season 2. I pictured it as some some beginning of the shoot all-cast meeting where they were like "yeah so uh, several of you are now sex symbols? In light of this we've written in more nudity and the following cast members now have workout plans:" and so on and so forth.
(Not really, but not not really)
And I didn't think much else of it until Con's birthday post on instagram and the trailer came out with Con shirtless, and then I thought as far as "ah, yes, Con sure did work out. He looks good!" (Note: That's a lie, I thought "OMG WHAT A BABE.")
And starting the new season yesterday, it looks like Nathan's lost some weight and/or put on some muscle. And again, that lined up with about what I was expecting. Vico and Madeline's arms are hella muscular, which makes sense given what the body norm is for AFAB people in tv right now. Most of the rest of the cast looks pretty similar to how they looked last season, which did not surprise me. Taika looks like he might've upped his workout routine a little, but he's a Real Hollywood Celebrity so he probably actually has a personal trainer and shit, he left average working actor/screenwriter life behind a long time ago.
But then!
We got our merStede fever dream come true, and Rhys's body type is almost exactly the same as it was last season. Which is fine! I'm not pointing this out to be like "how dare this man not make his muscles bigger for us." The man CLEARLY already has buckets of sex appeal without needing to work his pecs 4 days a week. He's doing just fine for himself, the proof is in the fan art.
So, because I am a person who loves thinking about process and logistics and all of the little moving pieces that go into something like OFMD, I am now wondering: why did Con have to build muscle if Rhys didn't? Or did he not have to, was he just told he would have some shirtless scenes and he was offered the personal training if he wanted it? How does this decision-making process work? Are there differences between UK/US/NZ studios on this? Is this all settled during contract negotiations? Do actors push back on this kind of thing ever? Is any of this being covered under the SAG-AFTRA contract negotiations? Should it be?
I understand why it's not really talked about, but given how extreme Hollywood likes to take their actors' body types I do wonder about the behind-the-scenes aspects, especially on smaller shows like OFMD where a lot of the cast are closer to middle class than the cast of Marvel movies.
#ofmd season 2 spoilers#ofmd spoilers#if you are a person who knows about these things please hit me up i am very curious#and again NO BODY SHAMING#BODIES ARE BODIES THEY ARE NOT A REFLECTION OF MORALITY OR CHARACTER#THEY JUST ARE

I want to step away from the art-vs-artist side of the Gaiman issue for a bit, and talk about, well, the rest of it. Because those emotions you're feeling would be the same without the art; the art just adds another layer.
Source: I worked with a guy who turned out to be heavily involved in an international, multi-state sex-slavery/trafficking ring.
He was really nice.
Yeah.
It hits like a dumptruck of shit. You don't feel stable in your world anymore. How could someone you interacted with, liked, also be a truly horrible person? How could your judgement be that bad? How can real people, not stylized cartoon bogeymen, be actually doing this shit?
You have to sit with the fact that you couldn't, or probably couldn't, have known. You should have no guilt as part of this horror â but guilt is almost certainly part of that mess you're feeling, because our brains do this associative thing, and somehow "I liked [the version of] the guy [that I knew]", or his creations, becomes "I made a horrible mistake and should feel guilty."
You didn't, loves, you didn't.
We're human, and we can only go by the information we have. And the information we have is only the smallest glimpse into someone else's life.
I didn't work closely with the guy I knew at work, but we chatted. He wasn't just nice; he was one of the only people outside my tiny department who seemed genuinely nice in a workplace that was rapidly becoming incredibly toxic. He loaned me a bike trainer. Occasionally he'd see me at the bus stop and give me a lift home.
Yup. I was a young woman in my twenties and rode in this guy's car. More than once.
When I tell this story that part usually makes people gasp. "You must feel so scared about what could have happened to you!" "You're so lucky nothing happened!"
No, that's not how it worked. I was never in danger. This guy targeted Korean women with little-to-no English who were coerced and powerless. A white, fluent, US citizen coworker wasn't a potential victim. I got to be a person, not prey.
Y'know that little warning bell that goes off, when you're around someone who might be a danger to you? That animal sense that says "Something is off here, watch out"?
Yeah, that doesn't ping if the preferred prey isn't around.
That's what rattled me the most about this. I liked to think of myself as willing to stand up for people with less power than me. I worked with Japanese exchange students in college and put myself bodily between them and creeps, and I sure as hell got that little alarm when some asian-schoolgirl fetishist schmoozed on them. But we were all there.
I had to learn that the alarm won't go off when the hunter isn't hunting. That it's not the solid indicator I might've thought it was. That sometimes this is what the privilege of not being prey does; it completely masks your ability to detect the horrors that are going on.
A lot of people point out that 'people like that' have amazing charisma and ability to lie and manipulate, and that's true. Anyone who's gotten away with this shit for decades is going to be way smoother than the pathetic little hangers-on I dealt with in university. But it's not just that. I seriously, deeply believe that he saw me as a person, and he did not extend personhood to his victims. We didn't have a fake coworker relationship. We had a real one. And just like I don't know the ins-and-outs of most of my coworkers lives, I had no idea that what he did on his down time was perpetrate horrors.
I know this is getting off the topic, but it's so very important. Especially as a message to cis guys: please understand that you won't recognize a creep the way you might think you will. If you're not the preferred prey, the hind-brain alarm won't go off. You have to listen to victims, not your gut feeling that the person seems perfectly nice and normal. It doesn't mean there's never a false accusation, but face the fact that it's usually real, and you don't have enough information to say otherwise.
So, yeah. It fucking sucks. Writing about this twists my insides into tense knots, and it was almost a decade ago. I was never in danger. No one I knew was hurt!
Just countless, powerless women, horrifically abused by someone who was nice to me.
You don't trust your own judgement quite the same way, after. And as utterly shitty as it is, as twisted up and unstead-in-the-world as I felt the day I found out â I don't actually think that's a bad thing.
I think we all need to question our own judgement. It makes us better people.
I don't see villains around every corner just because I knew one, once. But I do own the fact that I can't know, really know, about anyone except those closest to me. They have their own full lives. They'll go from the pinnacles of kindness to the depths of depravity â and I won't know.
It's not a failing. It's just being human. Something to remember before you slap labels on people, before you condemn them or idolize them. Think about how much you can't know, and how flawed our judgement always is.
Grieve for victims, and the feeling of betrayal. But maybe let yourself off the hook, and be a bit slower to skewer others on it.
#listen to old auntie Shades#serious#fuck I don't know how to tag this#I should probably read-more this but I'm not sure where#and now I need to go take a walk for my stupid mental health#you never stop processing#you do it over and over and over and over#and hope it gets a bit easier each time#Someone might get upset by using prey#but 'preferred prey' is an important concept from the predator's view#it doesn't mean the people are inherently prey#you feel me?#it's the best word I can find for the concept#neil gaiman#adjacent

things people should know:
do not mess with your cat.
do not mess with your sukuna.
you thought this was common sense. apparently, it wasnât.
it started when you left sukuna in the waiting area of the vet clinic, because you needed to pick up some medication for your catâbless his furry little soul, the bravest warrior you know, who had just survived a vet visit with minimal casualties. sukuna, being the grumpy menace he is, had grumbled about waiting but ultimately sat down with your cat carrier beside him, arms crossed, looking like a bouncer for a very exclusive club. and thatâs when they appeared.
the poodle posse.
a group of women with perfectly manicured nails, dressed like they were about to star in a reality tv show called luxury lives of lapdog owners. their poodles were equally pamperedâfluffy, primped, wearing tiny designer jackets that probably cost more than your rent. you werenât there to witness it, but based on sukunaâs expression when you came back, things had escalated.
âoh, wow, such a strong, brooding man,â one of them had probably purred, leaning into sukunaâs personal space. âis this your cat? heâs so cute!â
bad move.
your cat is not "cute"âyour cat is a warrior. a veteran of the battlefield (otherwise known as your apartment). he has fought many enemies (the vacuum, a particularly aggressive curtain, and one unfortunate houseplant that did not survive). and most importantly, he is loyal to you. so, when a strangerâs hand reached out to pet him?
he hissed. and not just any hissâthis was a legendary hiss. a hiss that spoke of betrayal, of fury, of how dare you touch me, peasant. and sukuna? sukuna looked at them like they were the scum of the earth.
"ya deaf?" he had grunted, because subtlety has never been his strong suit. "he doesnât like strangers."
but did that stop them? oh no. if anything, it made them more interested.
âaww, heâs just shy! maybe he just needs to warm up to us!â
and thatâs when your cat, your beautiful, petty little creature, smacked their poodle in the face.
gasp. horror. scandal.
the poodle recoiled like it had just been personally insulted. its owner gasped, clutching her dog like a victorian maiden about to faint. "your cat just hit my precious baby!" she shrieked.
sukuna? sukuna had the audacity to laugh. âgood. he had it coming.â
the poodle posse was outraged. they tried to guilt-trip sukuna, fluttering their lashes, attempting to appeal to his (nonexistent) softer side.
âyou know, a guy like you shouldnât be wasting time with a cat person. dog lovers are way more fun.â
mistake.
because thatâs when sukuna turned to them, his usual mean grin stretching across his face, and said, âyou think i like cats? nah. i like my girl. the catâs just part of the package.â
devastation. utter defeat.
when you finally came back, you were greeted with the sight of the poodle posse storming out, their spoiled dogs in tow, throwing death glares at sukunaâwho looked smug as hell. you raised a brow at him. "what did you do?"
"nothin'," he said, draping an arm over your shoulders. "your little monster defended his honor. i just enjoyed the show." meanwhile, your cat, still sitting in his carrier like a king on his throne, looked very pleased with himself.
moral of the story?
donât mess with your cat. donât mess with your sukuna. and definitely donât mess with both at the same time.

dividers by lovely @saradika-graphics!
joel found a lodge houseâŠ
You donât know what you did to make Joel Miller hate you so much.
He's never outright said it, but you know itâs thereâin every sharp glance, every clipped word, every deliberate avoidance.
Besides, his silence is worse than anything he could say. A quiet condemnation that settles in your chest like stone.
You tell yourself it doesnât matter, that you donât care what he thinks, but the truth is harder to swallow.
You do careâmore than you want to admit. His approval, his respect, hell, even a sliver of kindness from him feels like an impossible prize youâll never win.
And you hate yourself for wanting it. For needing it.
It's not just the weight of his disdain that eats at you, it's the not knowing why. God, do you wish you could ask him why.
What did you do to make him look at you like youâre some necessary evil he has to tolerate. Why does he hold some unspoken grudge that's manifested itself into something you couldn't dream of ever comprehending.
But the thought of confronting Joel feels like standing on the edge of a cliff, staring down into a void that might swallow you whole.
So instead, you do what you've always done. You keep your distance, try to match his indifference with your own, and tell yourself itâs better this way.
You were young when the outbreak hit, six years old.
Youâre sure thatâs part of it. That thatâs how Joel sees you, as some bumbling, naive child whoâs more of a hassle than anything else.
Another mouth to feed, another back to watch, baggage.
You've been with him for almost seven months now, traveling side by side when you may have well been miles apart. Trekking through abandoned cities, overgrown highways, and every godforsaken patch of wilderness in between.
In the beginning, you did everything you could to prove him wrong.
You pushed yourself past your limits, hunted, scavenged, fought, kept up. You did everything that needed to be done without hesitation.
All to show that you were more than what he made you out to be. It never seemed to matter much.
After you lost your parents in the early days of the outbreak, it was just you and your sister. She taught you everything you know, taught you how to survive.
It's because of her that you know how to shoot a rifle, how to skin a rabbit, how to start a fire with nothing but sticks and dried moss, how to snap bones and locate which vital arteries bleed out the quickest.
It's because of her that you've been able to hone some sick skill in the maiming of clickers.
A skill you never thought you'd need to use on her.
You were supposed to be safe in the QZ. You weren't supposed to be fifteen years old, aiming a gun at the one person you had left.
Your own flesh and blood wasn't supposed to be the very first in a long list of red tallies under your belt.
Itâs been years and youâve still never forgotten that day. December 19th, 2012, the date burned into your brain like someone took a branding iron to the tissue.
You canât count the amount of times youâve been ripped from your sleep drenched in a cold sweat with the tail end of a scream tearing at the skin of your throat.
The image of what was left of your sister, slumped on the ground lifeless as her blood painted the wall behind her flashing behind your closed eyelids. The sound of her last labored breath ringing in your ears louder than any shotgun blast.
You ran that same night, with the weight of her death on your shoulders.
Your entire world spinning out around you as you clawed through barbed wire fencing, not caring where you were going or what would happen to youâjust needing to escape.
There was nothing left for you to do after that but survive. And thatâs what you did, for years, scraping by in a world that had already chewed you up and spit you out a mangled mess.
You learned how to be ruthless because of it.
How to harden yourself against the loss, the pain, the brutality. But there were cracks, too. Cracks you hid well, buried deep beneath layers of stubbornness and distance.
The endless days blurred into each other. Empty houses, hollow streets. A life reduced to scavenging, hiding, and the occasional, fleeting moment of human connection that inevitably ended in loss.Â
And then you found yourself with Joel.
You hadnât exactly found him, though. More like crashed into his orbit by accident.
A few desperate days spent scavenging through the ruins of a small town, a chance encounter that left you both wary and unwilling to turn your backs.
But, inexplicably, you somehow became part of his traveling routine.
He wasnât like any of the others youâd met before. At first, you thought he might be different. A man who seemed broken, but different nonetheless.
As the days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, you began to see the truth. Joel Miller wasnât concerned with you. He didnât need you. And, more than that, he didnât want you around.Â
You didnât know what to do with that.
Itâs a bitter kind of irony. Youâve survived all this time completely on your own, fought tooth and nail to stay alive, but with him, you might just crumble.
Joel found a lodge house. It's a small, weathered place tucked away in the dense trees of the wood surrounding it.
He only deemed it suitable after an extensive perimeter check and a thorough sweep of the interior.
It's not muchâjust another run-down place in the middle of nowhereâbut for the first time in what feels like forever, itâs a roof over your head for the night.
The walls are sturdy, though the windows are cracked and half of the floorboards creak like they're about to give out at any moment.
You explored the second floor alone, creeping through the desolate rooms and taking in all that was left behind.
Old family photographs covered in thick layers of dust, worn clothes riddled with holes still hung in the few closets you stumble across.
The oddest of all was an old jewelry box tucked away in a dresser draw, tarnished silver dull and muddy.
The sound of familiar footsteps comes from somewhere behind you. The door creaks open slowly.
Joel. Of course.
He clears his throat, the sound abrasive in the quiet of the house. Â
âFireâs low,â he says, voice rough from its lack of use today.
You donât turn around, not yet. You take the box in your gloved hand, running your fingers across the intricate design of the lid, touch trailing over winding vines and small roses.
âOkay,â you mutter, your voice coming out quieter than you intended. âIâll grab some more wood later.â
Another beat of silence. Then, âItâs gettinâ cold out, Iâll go.â
Your fingers pause their ministrations, moving to flip the lid open. Empty.
âSuit yourself,â you reply after a moment, your tone just as neutral as his.
Joel doesnât leave right away. You hear the floorboards groan beneath his weight, his presence lingering in the doorway.Â
You wonder what heâs waiting for, or if heâs waiting at all.
Finally, he speaks. âDonât touch anything.â
With that he turns and leaves the room, you wait until you canât hear his footsteps trailing down the stairs anymore to let out the scoff festering in your chest.
You snap the jewelry lid shut with a little more force than necessary. âAsshole.â
Joel's been gone for a while now. Longer than it takes to chop a few logs for firewood.
You came down from the upstairs a few minutes after hearing the tell-tale sound of the heavy door opening and closing. The main room is quiet, save for the soft crackle of the dwindling fire.
You're perched on an old armchair near the entrance, peering out the dirty window that has the best view of the treeline as you nervously pick the skin around your nails.
You tell yourself not to worry. Heâs probably fine, heâs been doing this a lot longer than you. And if Joel is anything, itâs annoyingly competent.
Still, a nagging doubt itches at the back of your mind. It's been at least half an hour, maybe more.
Youâre just about to grab your own pack and go looking for him when the front door creaks open.
Joel stumbles inside, the frigid evening air rushing in behind him before he slams the door shut. At first glance, he looks fineâno more haggard than usual.Â
But then you notice the way he favors his left side, the way his free hand is pressed against his ribs, blood seeping through his fingers and staining his torn undershirt.
Youâre on your feet in an instant.
âFuck,â you say, voice sharper than you expected. âWhat the hell happened?â
âRaiders.â Is the only explanation you get as he tries to brush past you like itâs nothing. The stiff way he moves and the tightens of his jaw betray him. âSâjust a scratch.â
âBullshit,â you snap, stepping in front of him and blocking his path to the fire. âSit. Now.â
He gives you a look, one of those deep, withering glares youâve seen him use to intimidate countless others into submission. But you stand your ground, chin raised and jaw setâdefiant.Â
His stubbornness finally meeting its match in your own.Â
Finally, with a low growl of frustration, he drops onto the couch. âHappy now?â
"Not until you let me take care of that." You motion toward his side, where the blood is still spreading.
âIâm fine,â he mutters, lolling his head back to rest more heavily on the couch.
âSure you are,â you snap, crossing the room to rifle through your bag. âAnd Iâm the fucking Queen of England.â
"Said Iâm fine," he bites through gritted teeth, but youâre already moving, heading back to him with the first aid kit from your pack.
"You want to bleed out on this ugly-ass couch? Be my guest," you shoot back, dropping to your knees in front of him. "Otherwise, shut up and let me help."
Joel surprisingly doesnât argue any further, just sighs heavily and reluctantly sinks further into the couch cushions.
You push the front of his jacket open to slide it off his shoulders as gently as you can, peeling back the layer of his flannel next.
The smell of blood hits you immediately.
The gash is about five inches long, trailing the span of his ribcage. Itâs deepâbut not fatalâjust an angry red and oozing blood.
Definitely not the simple 'scratch' he made it out to be.
Your stomach churns at the sight, but you push it down. No time for that.
âJesus, Joel,â you mutter under your breath, reaching for the alcohol in your kit. âYou really know how to underplay a situation, huh?â
He doesnât respond, just watches you with those dark, calculating eyes of his. Always watching, always assessing.
Itâs unnerving, but you focus on the task at hand, grabbing a clean cloth and soaking it with alcohol.
âThis is gonna hurt,â you warn, though thereâs a part of you that doesnât mind the idea of causing him a little discomfort.
A petty, vindictive part that still stings from all the scorn heâs thrown your way.
âJust get it over with,â Joel grits out, his voice low and gravelly.
You donât give him any more warnings as you wipe the soaked cloth over the wound. He flinches, a harsh curse slipping through clenched teeth, but he doesnât pull away.
You work as quickly as you can, wiping away the blood and dirt with steady hands, your movements as gentle as possible given the situation.
You let out an annoyed huff when the torn fabric of his shirt gets in the way of your hands for a second time.
You lean back on your heels, glancing up at Joel. âYou need to take your shirt off.â
Joel raises a brow at you, his lips pressing into a thin line. âThat really necessary?â
âYes, itâs necessary, Joel,â you huff, already losing patience. âUnless you want me to sit here and cut around every thread of this ratty thing while you bleed out, then by all meansââ
He sighs heavily, cutting you off as he shifts forward and grabs the hem of his shirt. He tugs at the fabric, grunting in pain each time it strains his ribs.
You roll your eyes at how slow heâs moving, and your patienceâalready worn thin by the day's eventsâsnaps.
âJesus Christ, let me help,â you huff, reaching forward and grabbing the fabric.
Joel jerks back slightly, his hand shooting up to stop yours mid-motion. âI got it,â he growls, a sharp edge in his voice.
You glare at him, your hand still caught in his grip. His palm is calloused, his hold firm enough to make your pulse jump unexpectedly.Â
For a moment, the two of you just sit there, locked in a silent standoff.
Then he releases your hand and pulls the shirt over his head himself, wincing as the movement pulls at his side.
You wait with your arms crossed, trying to ignore the awkward flutter of nerves in your stomach as the fabric peels away to reveal his chest.
Joelâs broad, solid frame isnât new to you. Youâve seen him shirtless beforeâbrief glimpses when bathing in rivers or changing in run down houses between stops.
But this time feels different, more intimate somehow.
Youâre staring, and you know it.
The firelight cast shadows over his skin, illuminating old scars, faint lines of muscle, the barely there jut of his stomach over the hem of his jeans.
You had been getting more game kills recently, two hunters are always better than one.
Joel clears his throat, dragging your focus back to the present. âYou gonna gawk all night, or can we move this along?â
You snap out of it, scowling to cover your embarrassment. âYeah, yeah. Donât get your panties in a twist.â
You finish cleaning the gash and grab the small needle and thread lying next to you.
âThisâll hurt worse than the alcohol,â you say, threading the needle easily.
Joel snorts, a rare sound. âFigures.â
The needle pierces his skin, and this time, you catch the smallest hitch in his breath. He doesnât make a sound, but his jaw tightens, the veins in his neck standing out like cords.
His hands grip the edge of the couch hard enough that his knuckles turn white with it, but he doesnât tell you to stop or slow down.
Heâs too damn proud for that.
You shift closer, your knee brushing against his leg as you position yourself to work from a better angle. You feel his eyes on you, that intense, scrutinizing stare that makes your skin prickle.
âYouâve done this before,â Joel says after a moment, his tone less sharp than before. Itâs not quite a question, more of an observation.
You shrug, keeping your hands steady. âOf course I have.â
âWho taught you?â
The question catches you off guard, Joelâs never shown much interest in what your life was before you met him. You glance up briefly, catching his gaze. Thereâs no malice there, no judgmentâjust curiosity.
You swallow hard, dragging your eyes back to stitches, half way done now. âMy sister.â
You donât elaborate and Joel doesnât push.
Maybe itâs the sudden tightness in your tone or the look you know must be clouding your face that keeps him quiet.
You finish off the stitching, tearing the thin strand of thread with your hands before youâre leaning away again.
âGood as new,â you say, dabbing some more alcohol on your own hands to disinfect. âTry not to tear these open anytime soon.â
Joel leans back, strong arms spread across the back of the couch, his face unreadable as he peers down at the fresh stitching on his side.Â
âCouldâve done it myself,â he mutters, but the edge in his voice is gone, replaced with something softer, almost resigned.Â
You roll your eyes with a scoff, not even trying to hide your irritation as you rise from the floor. âSure you couldâve, right before you passed out. Youâre welcome by the way.â
You gather your supplies and turn to head back to your bag, but Joelâs voice stops you in your tracks.
âYouâre always like this, yâknow,â he says, and the words carry that same gravelly drawl, but thereâs something new thereâsomething heavier.
You pause, your hands tightening around the kit in your grasp. âLike what?â
âPushy. Stubborn,â he replies, his tone cutting, though it lacks the usual venom. âLike youâve got somethinâ to prove all the damn time.â
You whip around, your patience officially gone. âYou think Iâm stubborn?â you shoot back, your voice rising. âComing from the guy who would rather bleed out on a fucking couch than admit he needs help?â
Joelâs jaw tightens, and his hands flex against the couch cushions, but you donât stop. Not now. Not after months of this.
âIâve been busting my ass since day one to prove that Iâm not dead weight to you. Iâve fought for us, for you. And for what? Just to get more of your bullshit attitude?â
âYou donât know what the hell youâre talkinâ about,â Joel snaps, pushing himself upright despite the obvious strain it puts on his freshly stitched wound. âYou donât know a goddamn thing about me.â
âBecause you wonât let me!â you fire back, stepping closer, your voice rising. âAll you do is look at me like Iâm some burden you canât wait to get rid of.â
Joelâs glare sharpens, his lips parting as if to respond, but you cut him off.
You really canât stop yourself now that you started, all the anger and frustration reaching a fever pitch hot enough to burst the tight lid youâve kept on your emotions.
âIf Iâm such a hassle, why didnât you just leave me back there, huh? Why didnât you just walk away like I know you wanted to?â
Joelâs breathing is heavier now, his broad chest rising and falling as his dark eyes bore into yours.
For a moment, he doesnât say anything. Then, he stands, and the sheer size of him forces you to tilt your chin up slightly to keep your glare fixed on his face.
âYou think I wanted this, kid?â he growls, his voice low and strained, like heâs barely holding himself together. âYou think I wanted to be responsible for someone else? To have someone elseâs fuckinâ life on me?â
âDonât call me kid,â you spit, shoving a finger into his chest, ignoring the way his jaw ticks at the contact. âIâm not a fucking kid.â
He scoffs, casting his eyes to the ceiling disbelievingly. âCouldâve fooled me.â
âFuck you, Joel,â you growl, fists clenching at your side. âIf you hate me that much, why the hell are you still here? Why didnât you tell me to fuck off the second you met me?â
âBecause I couldnât!â Joel snaps, booming voice filling the small space.
The confession slips out like it pains him. His fists clench at his sides, and for a moment, he looks like he might break something.
Youâve never been scared of Joel, even though youâve seen first hand just how scary he can be.
Now, as he looms in front of you, eyes blazing and jaw working furiously beneath his skin, itâs the closest to scared youâve felt.
âIâve seen you out there,â he continues, tone low and dark. âYouâve got a fuckinâ death wish. Youâre too damn stubborn to just stop, and Iâm not gonna let you go so you can run off and get yourself fuckinâ killed.â
Your heart pounds in your chest, his words hitting far too close to home.
âIâm just trying to survive, Joel,â you snap, your voice shaking. âThatâs what we do, isnât it? Survive.â
âSurvive,â Joel repeats bitterly, his gaze burning into yours. âThat what you call it? Throwinâ yourself into every goddamn fight, gettinâ stabbed and shot right fuckinâ in front of me and expecting me to brush that shit off?â
You let out a humorless laugh, nodding your head exasperatedly. âYes, yes I do expect you to just brush it off, because thatâs what you always do.âÂ
âWell I canât,â he grates out, taking a step closer. âI canât âcause despite whatever it is that you may think about me, I donât hate you. I care about you too damn much and that's my goddamn problem.â
That shuts you up, your mouth snapping closed with a sharp click of your teeth as you stare at him, shocked.
Joel holds your gaze, lips pressed into a thin line. âThat what you wanted to hear?â
Itâs in that moment that the fire finally fizzles out, the dull hiss of it the only sound left in the room.
Youâre quiet for a beat, stunned into silence. The heat of his anger, his frustration, it radiates off him, and you realize suddenly that this isnât just about you.Â
It never was.
âThen show me,â you challenge softly, your heart pounding in your chest. âShow me that you donât hate me.â
Joelâs eyes darken, his head cocking to the side as he searches your face for a sign. You donât say anything, you only square your shoulders and raise your chin, your eyes just as hard as his own.
âI want you to prove it.â
The tension snaps like a rubber band stretched too far.Â
You shouldnâtâthis shouldnâtâhappen. Not like this. Not after everything thatâs been said.
But when Joelâs lips crash against yours, hot and desperate and urgent, it makes everything blur into nothing.Â
Itâs not gentle, not softâthis is anger and longing and frustration all wrapped into one. Itâs messy, frantic, like a fight thatâs been brewing for too long.
He grips your arm, pulling you closer, almost too roughly, but it feels like itâs everything youâve both been avoiding.
His other hand moves to cup the back of your neck, grounding you as his lips press harder against yours, like heâs trying to pour everything he canât say into this single moment.
You respond just as fiercely, nails digging into the skin of his shoulders as you kiss him back with all the pent-up emotion thatâs been simmering beneath the surface.
The coarse hair of his beard scrapes against the skin of your chin deliciously, the scent of blood and firewood filling your senses as his arm wraps around your waist, dragging you impossibly closer.
Close enough that you can feel the wild beat of his heart booming against your chest.
You pull away for a second, breathless, both of you looking at each other, your eyes wide and pupils blown.
âGoddamn it,â Joel mutters, his voice thick with frustration and something else you canât place. He presses his forehead to yours, the deep brown of his eyes dark than before. âWhat the hell are we doing?â
You donât have an answer. Youâre not sure if you even want one.
You reach for him again, arms looping around his neck to drag his mouth back to yours.
This kiss is nothing like the first, it isnât a clash of frustrationâitâs filthier, rawer. A near feral thing, all teeth and tongue, a surge of hunger and need that borders on violence.Â
Joel groans into your mouth, a low, guttural sound that sends a shiver racing down your spine. His teeth catch your bottom lip, pulling just hard enough to make you gasp.
He takes advantage of the sound, his tongue sweeping into your mouth to slide against yours with wet, messy desperation, like heâs trying to claim every inch of you.
The taste of himâsalt and iron and something distinctly Joelâmakes your head spin.Â
Your fingers knot into the chocolaty curls at the nape of his neck, surprisingly soft to the touch. His own hands roam the soft curves of your body, rough and insistent, like he canât decide where he wants to touch you most.
âJoelââ His name spills from your lips like a plea, and he answers with a deep, guttural noise that sends heat pooling low in your belly. His tongue follows the path of his teeth, soothing the bites with lazy, deliberate strokes that make your knees weak.
Youâre moving before you even realize it. Joel dragging you across the room and down onto the couch with him, using the strength heâs built up after all these years to manhandle you until your thighs are spread wide on either side of his lap.
âJoel,â you gasp again, rearing back enough to break the kiss. âYour stitchesââ
He cuts you off with a sharp nip to the sensitive spot behind your ear, tearing a high whine from your throat. âCan hardly feel âem.â
You make a displeased sound, but itâs undermined by the way you tilt your head to give his wandering lips more room. His hands find a home on your hips, one slipping beneath your shirt to press against the soft skin of your stomach.Â
His fingers splay wide across your skin, his palm callused and rough. His pinky just barely brushes the underside of your breast, and youâre suddenly rearing back.Â
âWait,â you say, your voice barely a whisper.
Joelâs hands immediately loosen their grip on your hips, his brows knitting together in concern. âYou okay?â
You nod quickly, your heart pounding in your chest. âI just...I need to tell you something.â
His jaw tightens slightly, but he stays quiet, waiting for you to speak.
You take a beat, chewing at the skin of your bottom lip nervously.
âIâve never...â You pause, swallowing hard as your cheeks heat up. âIâve never done this before. I mean, Iâve never been with anyone like this.â
Joel pulls back slightly, his expression unreadable as he processes your words. For a moment, you think he might pull away completely, but then he exhales a long, slow breath.
âChrist,â he mutters, scrubbing a hand down his face. âYouâre tellinâ me this now?â
âI didnât exactly plan for this to happen,â you snap back, crossing your arms over your chest defensively. âItâs not like I had the luxury of a high school sweetheart to pop my cherry out here.â
Joelâs gaze softens at your tone, and he reaches out to cup your cheek, his thumb brushing against your skin. âHey, hey, I didnât mean it like that.â
You glance away, suddenly feeling self-conscious under the weight of his stare. âI just...I wanted you to know. But I want this, Joel. I want you.â
His thumb stills against your cheek, and he swallows hard, his adamâs apple bobbing as he considers your words.
âI donât...â He pauses, the most hesitant youâve ever heard him. âI donât want to hurt you.â
Itâs the most vulnerable heâs been around you, round eyes shining with something so raw and so earnest it makes your heart ache in your chest.Â
âYou wonât,â you insist, your voice steady despite the nerves fluttering in your stomach. âI trust you.â
Joelâs jaw clenches, and for a moment, he looks like heâs going to argue. But then he nods, his shoulders relaxing as he cups the back of your neck, pulling you closer until your foreheads touch again.
âAt least let me do this right,â he murmurs, his voice so soft you almost donât hear it. âNot here. Not on some goddamn couch.â
You blink up at him, surprised by the tenderness in his tone. âWhat?â
âUpstairs,â he says, his thumb tracing lazy circles against the side of your neck. âThereâs a bed up there. It ainât much, but itâs better than this.â
You canât do anything but nod, your pulse racing beneath your skin fast enough to combat the cold night air seeping through the walls.
âOkay,â you say softly, voice barely above a whisper. âUpstairs.â
Joel stands, gently pulling you to feet and taking your hand in his. He leads you upstairs, each step feeling heavier with anticipation. The small bedroom is dimly lit, the faint glow of moonlight filtering through a broken blind.Â
The bed isnât muchâan old mattress on a worn frame, covered with a patched-up blanketâbut it doesnât matter.
Joel shuts the door behind you, the sound of the latch clicking into place sending a shiver down your spine.
âLast chance,â he says, his voice a low rumble. âYou say the word, and we stop. No questions asked.â
Your throat tightens at the sincerity in his tone, the way heâs giving you an out even though you can see the strain in every line of his body, the way his hands flex at his sides like he wants nothing more than to reach out and touch you.
But you donât hesitate.
You step closer, placing your hands on his bare chest. You bite back a smile at the goosebumps that break out all along his skin at your touch.Â
âJesus, Miller,â you mumble teasingly, nails lightly scratching through the salt and pepper hair scattered along his chest. âHow long are you gonna drag this out before you get it through your thick skull that I want to fuck you?â
"Christ." Joel huffs, shaking his head as the corners of his lips turn up in a small grin. âLike I fuckinâ said,â he starts, big hands kneading the meat of your hips. âPushy.â
Joel walks you backward until the backs of your knees hit the edge of the bed, and you fall onto it with a soft gasp.
He follows you immediately, crawling over you, his body covering yours, his weight a comforting pressure. âIâll take care of you,â he murmurs, his lips brushing yours. âIâll make it good for you, I swear.â
His fingers are everywhere, unbuttoning your shirt with a practiced ease that has your pulse racing. His lips follow the path of his hands, each touch a branding mark, each kiss leaving you wanting more.
âPretty girl,â he mutters softly, pressing a kiss right between the valley of your breasts.
You feel his cock stirring against your stomach, and it makes the ache between your legs flare to life, the weight of it, the hardness of it, driving you crazy with need.Â
You want him so badly you can barely think straight, but when his lips graze over your collarbone, you canât stop the quiet whine that escapes your throat.
Joel growls in response, a sound that resonates deep in his chest, and you know then that heâs as far gone as you are. His hands slide down to the waistband of your pants, tugging them down your legs with urgency.Â
As your skin is exposed to the cool air, you can feel the heat of his gaze on you, like heâs memorizing every inch of you.
âYouâre fuckin' perfect,â he mutters, his voice thick with desire.
Joel's hands find your thighs, parting them with a deliberate slowness that makes your breath catch in your throat. He positions himself between your legs, his body weight pressing you into the mattress, his chest rising and falling with the same frantic rhythm as yours.Â
The anticipation is almost unbearable as his fingers trace the line of your panties, the fabric damp with want.
âJesus, sheâs drippinâ for me already,â he mutters, voice rough, as he slides the material to the side, his thumb brushing over the sensitive swell of your clit.
Your body jerks at the contact, a desperate sound escaping your lips, but Joel doesnât relent.
âYou touch yourself down here, baby?â he asks, working tortuously slow circles over your clit.
"Please," you beg, your hands grasping at the sheets, pulling at them as if they can anchor you to the moment.
He looks up at you, his gaze dark and filled with an intensity that makes your stomach tighten. âAsked you a question, honey.â
You whine, high and loud in your throat as your thighs clench desperately around his wrist. âYes, I touch myself.â
Joelâs lips curl into a satisfied grin, sliding his thick index finger through the messy wetness to slip inside your clenching hole, making you gasp. Your hands grasp at the sheets, pulling at them as if they can anchor you to the moment.
âGood girl,â he breathes, eyes darkening at the broken moan that bursts from your lips. âWhenâs the last time you touched yourself?â
Your brain feels hazy as you search for the answer, pleasure clouding your mind slow and sweet as molasses. âAâa few nights ago.â
Joel hums idly, slipping a second finger alongside the first. The stretch has you whining, his fingers a lot more to take than your own.
Your hands come up to claw at his shoulders, relishing in the way his broad muscle ripples and shifts beneath your greedy palms.
âJoel,â you whine, hips canting down against his hand impatiently.
He just shushes you softly, free hand brushing soothing circles along the skin of your inner thigh. âI know, honey,â he mutters, the pace fingers speeding up. âBut I gotta get her nice and ready if you wanna take my cock.â
The gush of your pussy around his fingers is loud in the stillness of the room, a filthy wet noise that burns your ears each time he plunges them into your aching hole.
âI am ready.â Your breath hitches as your body begins to tremble beneath him. âPlease, Joelâfuckâplease, I needââ
âNeed what?â His voice is thick with dark amusement, but there's a hunger in his eyes that has your stomach twisting. âTell me, baby. What do you need?â
âI need you,â you rasp, your nails digging little crescent moons into his skin, your body pleading for release. âI need you inside me.â
Your hands grab at his hair, pulling him back up to meet your lips in a feverish kiss.Â
The pressure of his body on yours, the way his hard cock grinds against your trembling thigh, drives you to the brink of madness.Â
Your hands trail down his chest, past the waistband of his jeans, finally reaching the bulge straining against the fabric.
Joel groans when you rub him through his pants, feeling his cock twitch in response. He pulls back, breathing heavily, his lips curling into a smirk.Â
âYeah?â he asks, his voice thick with lust. âYou want my cock in this pretty pussy? Want me to show you how good it feels to be fucked?â
âGod, yes,â you answer, desperation lacing your tone as your hand moves to unbuckle his jeans. âWant it so bad.â
He lets you push his pants down just enough to free his cock, and you gasp, your eyes drawn to the way his length stands, thick and hard, just waiting for you. The tip flushed an angry red, drooling pre-come onto the scratchy sheets.
Joel pulls his fingers from you, using his hands spreading your legs wider, positioning himself between them with such careful precision that you can barely stand it.
The head of his cock drags through the mess between your legs, slipping all the way down till it catches on your soaked entrance.
Joel pauses, looking down at you, waiting for your signal, but the only answer you give is a pleading whimper, your hands pulling at his shoulders, urging him to move.
His mouth captures yours once again as he slowly slides into you, the stretch of his cock filling you steadily, making you gasp into his mouth.Â
The slow burn of him carving a place for himself inside of you is almost too much, your body trembling as you adjust to the feeling of him.
âFuck, baby,â Joel mutters against your lips. âYouâre so tight, so fuckinâ perfect for me.â
As he sinks deeper into you, his thick cock finally buried to the hilt inside of you, the feeling is overwhelming. You gasp, nails digging into his back as the pain slowly shifts into pleasure.
Joel groans into your mouth, his hands moving to your hips, guiding you as he rocks gently against you.Â
The rhythm is slow at first, deliberate, as if he's savoring every inch of you. Your body quivers beneath him, every inch of your skin tingling with sensation. You clutch at him, your legs tightening around his waist, needing more, wanting more.
"That's it," he murmurs, his voice thick with desire. "Take it, baby."
You screw your eyes shut tightly, trying to steady yourself as he thrusts deeper, harder. The angle shifts just enough to make your breath catch in your throat.Â
Every stroke feels like itâs hitting the deepest part of you, sparking heat in places you never knew could burn so hot.
"Fuck," you gasp, the sensation too overwhelming, too much in the best way. "Joel... please..."
"Please what, sweetheart?" He pulls back slightly, teasing you with a slow roll of his hips before driving back in with a grunt.
Your nails dig into his shoulders, urging him to move faster, harder. "Donât stop," you breathe, your voice trembling. "I need you to fuck me, Joel. Faster. Harder. Please."
The sound of skin slapping against skin fills the room as Joel finally picks up the pace, each thrust harder and deeper than the last.
Your back arches off the bed, chest pressing flush to his as your body coils tighter and tighter, already so close to the edge.
Joel reaches up to take your wrist in his, dragging your hand down to press flat against your lower stomach.
âFeel that?â he asks breathlessly, the speed of his hips knocking the dingy bed frame into the wall with every thrust. âYou feel how deep I am?â
His own hand blankets yours, pushing down so you can feel the way his cock punches up against your palm on the next thrust.
Your pussy clenches desperately around him at the feeling, your slick lips dropping open on a loud moan.
You can barely hold on. The heat in your stomach tightens, coiling painfully as your free hand scrambles to find purchase on his skin. "I can'tâI'm gonnaâ"
He grits his teeth, his jaw clenched as he drives deeper, pushing you closer and closer to the edge. "Come for me, baby," he growls, his voice dark and commanding. "Let me feel it."
With a strangled cry, you finally release, your body clenching around him, every nerve igniting in a white-hot explosion of pleasure.Â
Youâre lost in it, your world spinning, your senses overwhelmed by the sensation of Joelâs body pounding into yours, the way his cock brushes against that sweet spot behind your clit enough to make sparks go off behind your eyelids.
Joel pulls out of your velvety warmth, hand coming up to fist his dripping length until heâs bowing over you tightly and coming with a deep groan of your name.
His release paints your stomach with milky strands of white, rope after rope of warm come claiming you in a way no one has before.
He finally collapses against you with one last shuddering breath, both of you breathing heavily, your chests rising and falling together in the quiet aftermath.
For a few moments, neither of you speaks, the only sounds are the soft creak of the bed and the quiet hum of your racing hearts.Â
Joel rests his head against your shoulder, his breath warm against your skin, and you can feel the tension begin to slip away, the weight of everything thatâs happened between you both settling into something newâsomething different, but still there.
Your hand slips down the sweaty expanse of your stomach, your fingers swiping through the sticky mess of his release curiously.
âChrist, quit that,â Joel groans, tearing his eyes away from the sight to press his forehead against your shoulder.
âWhy?â you hum, brow raised in amusement as you drop your hand back to the mattress. âCan you even get it up again?â
Joel pinches your side hard enough to make you squeal, your body flinching away from him as a surprised laugh bubbles from your chest.
âWatch it,â he warns, though thereâs no bite to his tone. You only laugh in response.
The two of you settle into a comfortable silence, wrapped in each other as crickets chirp from outside the window.
Then Joel clears his throat, fingers idly tracing different shapes on the skin of your hip as he gathers the courage to speak.
A circle, a square, a diamond, a circle, a heart, a heart, a heart.
âIâmâŠâ he starts, trailing off softly. âIâm sorry. Iâve been a real fuckinâ prick, and you didnât deserve it. You never did.â
You turn your own gaze to his chest, hand coming up so you can trail your fingers along the jagged scar decorating his shoulder. Your touch featherlight over the rough patch of skin.
All the anger seeps from your body, a heavy weight gone until you feel so light you could float off the mattress and into the cold night air.
âItâs okay,â you whisper softly, so soft you think it gets lost in the quiet darkness of the room. âI understand now.â
And for the first time in what feels like forever, you both just lay there, tangled in each other, not worrying about the world outside, about the chaos that waits.Â
Just you, him, and the soft glow of moonlight.

know someone who enjoys horror stories? share this one! it's true!
hahahahahahahahahaha aarrggghhhhhhhhhh 3,000,000 deaths due to COVID-19 last year. Globally. Three million. Case rates higher than 90% of the rest of the pandemic. The reason people are still worried about COVID is because it has a way of quietly fucking up your body. And the risk is cumulative.
I'm going to say that again: the risk is cumulative.
It's not just that a lot of people get bad long-term effects from it. One in seven or so? Enough that it's kind of the Russian Roulette of diseases. It's also that the more times you get it, the higher that risk becomes. Like if each time you survived Russian Roulette, the empty chamber was removed from the gun entirely. The worst part is that, psychologically, we have the absolute opposite reaction. If we survive something with no ill effects, we assume it's pretty safe. It is really, really hard to override that sense of, "Ok, well, I got it and now I probably have a lot of immunity and also it wasn't that bad." It is not a respiratory disease. Airborne, yes. Respiratory disease, no: not a cold, not a flu, not RSV.
Like measles (or maybe chickenpox?), it starts with respiratory symptoms. And then it moves to other parts of your body. It seems to target the lungs, the digestive system, the heart, and the brain the most.
It also hits the immune system really hard - a lot of people are suddenly more susceptible to completely unrelated viruses. People get brain fog, migraines, forget things they used to know.
(I really, really hate that it can cross the blood-brain barrier. NOTHING SHOULD EVER CROSS THE BLOOD-BRAIN BARRIER IT IS THERE FOR A REASON.) Anecdotal examples of this shit are horrifying. I've seen people talk about coworkers who've had COVID five or more times, and now their work... just often doesn't make sense? They send emails that say things like, "Sorry, I didn't mean Los Angeles, I meant Los Angeles."
Or they insist they've never heard of some project that they were actually in charge of a year or two before.
Or their work is just kind of falling apart, and they don't seem to be aware of it.
People talk about how they don't want to get the person in trouble, so their team just works around it. Or they describe neighbors and relatives who had COVID repeatedly, were nearly hospitalized, talked about how incredibly sick they felt at the time... and now swear they've only had it once and it wasn't bad, they barely even noticed it.
(As someone who lived with severe dissociation for most of my life, this is a genuinely terrifying idea to me. I've already spent my whole life being like, "but what if I told them that already? but what if I did do that? what if that did happen to me and I just don't remember?") One of its known effects in the brain is to increase impulsivity and risk-taking, which is real fucking convenient honestly. What a fantastic fucking mutation. So happy for it on that one. Yes, please make it seem less important to wear a mask and get vaccinated. I'm not screaming internally at all now.
I saw a tweet from someone last year whose family hadn't had COVID yet, who were still masking in public, including school.
She said that her son was no kind of an athlete. Solidly bottom middle of the pack in gym.
And suddenly, this year, he was absolutely blowing past all the other kids who had to run the mile. He wasn't running any faster. His times weren't fantastic or anything. It's just that the rest of the kids were worse than him now. For some reason. I think about that a lot. (Like my incredibly active six-year-old getting a cold, and suddenly developing post-viral asthma that looked like pneumonia.
He went back to school the day before yesterday, after being home for a month and using preventative inhalers for almost week.
He told me that it was GREAT - except that he couldn't run as much at recess, because he immediately got really tired. Like how I went outside with him to do some yard work and felt like my body couldn't figure out how to increase breathing and heart rate.
I wasn't physically out of breath, but I felt like I was out of breath. That COVID feeling people describe, of "I'm not getting enough air." Except that I didn't have that problem when I had COVID.) Some people don't observe any long (or medium) term side effects after they have it.
But researchers have found viral reservoirs of COVID-19 in everyone they've studied who had it.
It just seems to hang out, dormant, for... well, longer than we've had an opportunity to observe it, so far.
(I definitely watched that literal horror movie. I think that's an entire genre. The alien dormant under ice in the Arctic.)
(oh hey I don't like that either!!!!!!!!!) All of which is to explain why we should still care about avoiding it, and how it manages to still cause excess deaths. Measuring excess deaths has been a standard tool in public health for a long time.
We know how many people usually die from all different causes, every year. So we can tell if, for example, deaths from heart disease have gone way up in the past three years, and look for reasons. Those are excess deaths: deaths that, four years ago, would not have happened. During the pandemic, excess death rates have been a really important tool. For all sorts of reasons. Like, sometimes people die from COVID without ever getting tested, and the official cause is listed as something else because nobody knows they had COVID. But also, people are dying from cardiovascular illness much younger now.
People are having strokes and heart attacks younger, and more often, than they did before the pandemic started. COVID causes a lot of problems. And some of those problems kill people. And some of them make it easier for other things to kill us. Lung damage from COVID leading to lungs collapsing, or to pneumonia, or to a pulmonary embolism, for example. The Economist built a machine-learning model with a 95% confidence interval that gauges excess death statistics around the world, to tell them what the true toll of the ongoing COVID pandemic has been so far.
Total excess deaths globally in 2023: Three million.
3,000,000.
Official COVID-19 deaths globally so far: Seven million. 7,000,000. Total excess deaths during COVID so far: Thirty-five point two million. 35,200,000.
Five times as many.
That's bad. I don't like that at all. I'm glad last year was less than a tenth of that. I'm not particularly confident about that continuing, though, because last year we started a period of really high COVID transmission. Case rates higher than 90% of the rest of the pandemic. Here's their data, and charts you can play with, and links to detailed information on how they did all of this:
Here's a non-paywalled link to it:

Oh: here's a link to where you can buy comfy, effective N95 masks in all sizes:
Those ones are about a buck each after shipping - about $30 for a box of 30. They also have sample packs for a dollar, so you can try a couple of different sizes and styles.
You can wear an N95 mask for about 40 total hours before the effectiveness really drops, so that's like a dollar for a week of wear.
They're also family-owned and have cat-shaped masks and I really love them. These ones are cuter and in a much wider range of colors, prints, and styles, but they're also more expensive; they range from $1.80 to $3 for a mask. ($18-$30 for a box of ten.)

that 141 x reader you just did was so good! i need to know what happens next. like after reader is better, do they stay in the military? stay in 141? or do they take a discharge? Iâm not the original ask but it was just so good.
love your writing btw!
thank you! hereâs part two :)
ALL PARTS CAN BE FOUND HERE
you were beginning to hate the infirmary.
the white walls. the moans of pain. the smell of bleach and blood.
the reminder of why you were here. of who put you here.
your friends. your family. your team. john. johnny. kyle. simon.
youâd told the doctor to not let your teammates in, and she had tried, but there was only so much she could do. she couldnât monitor the door all the time, and so a week after waking up from your coma, john price is sitting at your beside once again.
his hands are clasped together, knuckles white with the intensity of his grip. heâs leaning forward, elbows resting on the bed, hands under his chin. his position conveys his regret and worry. he looks like he should be in church, knelt between the pews and spewing silent prayers to a god that isnât listening.
you havenât spoken to him since he sat down ten minutes ago. the second you saw him step inside the infirmary, you knew he was there for you. there to try and speak to you, to apologize.
fuck him and his apologies.
you turned your head to the side, eyes staring at the white curtain separating your bed from the next. you studied the stitching while you listened to him breathe next to you. he hadnât spoken eitherâ just sat down and watched you.
it made your skin crawl, how he thought this was okay. how he thought this would be the way to get back into your good graces.
he clears his throat then, a sound youâve heard a million times before. it makes you want to gag now.
âlove,â his voice is soft, caring. you want to hit him in the jaw.
âcan we talk? please?â
you donât turn over, donât even spare him a glance. you keep your gaze trained on the curtain. the only giveaway that he has your attention is the fists you clench at your sides.
he takes the silence as an invitation, that bastard.
âwhat happenedââ he begins, then grunts. stops. takes a second, then begins again.
âwhat we did,â he says, and you roll your eyes. âit wasnât right. the intel was from a trusted source. weââ he sighs then, and you can tell heâs rubbing his temple. he did that when he was stressed. when he was anxious.
âwe were wrong to believe them over you, love. and imâ im sorry.â
silence ensues. you donât give him any indication that youâve heard what he said. he sighs again, inhaling deeply.
âyouâre still part of this team. johnny and gaz, theyâve been sitting outside this damn room like sentries. can barely pry âem away for drills.â he chuckles then, but itâs sad. pitiful. mournful.
âthereâs nothing we can do to make this right,â he tells you. youâre still mulling over what he said about johnny and gaz. still hung up on the fact that he didnât mention simon at all.
simon, who did the most damage to you, both psychologically and physically. simon, who shared your bed. simon.
simon, who is too much of a coward to face you for his crimes.
âbut we want to try,â price is speaking again. âif youâll let us.â
he stops talking. waits a beat, then two. then, you hear his chair scrape. heâs getting up, and thatâs when you turn your head to face him.
he looks bad. bags under the eyes, skin pale, beard overgrown. you think he deserves this. deserves worse than this. his eyes meet yours, and they widen the tiniest bit at the attention youâre showing him.
your voice is full of venom as you speak.
ânothing,â you seethe, angry tears blurring your vision. âwill ever undo what you did to me. what he did to me.â
price knows youâre talking about simon. the whole team knew you were a thing. hell, when theyâd strapped you to that chair and debated who would âinterrogateâ you, they hadnât even thought to include simon. why would he want to torture the person he loved?
to their surprise, he had volunteered to take point.
âwhen i get out of this bed,â you continue. âim gone. and i never, never, want to see any of you again, or else im putting a fucking bullet between your eyes.â
the captain doesnât speak. you can see the remorse on his face. you couldnât care less about his feelings.
he gives a short nod, and without another word, he turns and leaves the room.
after johnâs visit, no one else tries to visit you. you no longer catch glimpses of kyle or johnny outside the infirmary door. youâre glad theyâre starting to get the hint.
but youâre still getting flowers. you donât know where theyâre coming from. sometimes theyâre dropped off by a nurse, other times they appear in the morning after a restless sleep. thereâs never a note. never anything to suggest who would be leaving them.
you know itâs one of the 141, but you donât know exactly who. you feel certain itâs not simon.
but, unbeknownst to you, it is him. he knows you donât want to see himâ to see any of them. price had told them all about what youâd said to him during your talk.
price had also told them that heâd already started preparing your transfer papers. that had caused an uproar from soap, whoâd quickly been quieted by a saddened price.
simon had expected it. expected worse, actually. he knew that if the roles had been reversed, he wouldnât have been as merciful as you. it made him hate what theyâd done to you so much more.
there had been the tiniest doubt in his mind when all the evidence pointed to you. he hadnât believed it at firstâ and then things became damning. everything pointed to you. trusted sources were pointing their fingers at you, and everyone listened. he had listened.
he had volunteered to torture you because heâd been angry. rage he hadnât felt in years bubbled to the surface of his skin, and he wanted to tear you limb from limb. how dare you come into their livesâ his lifeâ and betray them so substantially?
simon didnât trust easily. he was battered and broken and scarred. shattered and malformed pieces hastily glued back together. he let the team in. let you in. let you see his face. let you into his bed. let you into his fucking heart.
and you turned around and drove a dagger into him. or so he thought.
he thought his anger and actions had been justified. thought he was doing the world a favor by butchering you. but he was wrong. the team was wrong.
he finds himself regretting how he hadnât listened to your pleas, but thereâs nothing he can do about it now.
he knows the chances of you forgiving him, of letting him back into your life, are slim to none. but how could he not at least try?
youâd know each other for years. been together for years. all of it thrown away because he still knew the hurt of betrayal all too well. because it was too easy to fall back into the mindset that it was him against everyone. that the only person he knew, the only one he could rely on, was himself.
so he left flowers. your favorite ones. and he did so without making you face him, without apologizing or groveling. it was the least he owed you.
a month after your coma, you were finally allowed out of the infirmary. you were still healing, skin still tender and bruised. pink, jagged scars lining your skin; eternal reminders of the pain youâd been subjected to.
youâd been given a t-shirt and a pair of jeans, which youâd pulled on with much fuss. every time you struggled or stumbled, you found yourself getting angry. angry at the men who did this to you.
the anger was going to eat you alive, at least thatâs what the psychologist that had been dropping by to see you had said. sheâd told you you need to let it go, and youâd laughed in her face.
how do you let something like this go?
you didnât know. you didnât think you were strong enough to do that. not a good enough person to forgive the men that had carved into you.
once you had dressed, you shuffled out into the hallway. youâd profusely denied an escort, and the doctor had reluctantly acquiesced. sheâd let you go, with just the promise that youâd keep your iv hooked in.
so here you were, trudging down the halls of the base, iv pole rattling along behind you.
you could feel eyes on you, but no one dared to get too close. you were glad. you didnât want more empty apologies and sympathetic words.
you still remembered the way to priceâs office like the back of your hand. you doubted youâd ever forget it.
time and time again youâd found yourself here. sometimes, getting reprimanded. others, congratulated. a few times youâd shown up in tears, and price had let you in without a word.
now you were standing outside his door, trying to contain the rage in your veins.
you raised a hand. knocked once, firm and loud.
âcome in!â price called from inside.
you were already twisting the door knob, pushing into the room.
your eyes found price first. he was leaning against his desk, arms crossed over his chest. his hat was absent from his head, instead resting beside him on the desk.
and then you noticed simon.
he was wearing all black. his hands were covered, bones decorating the black gloves. gloves youâd seen many times before. gloves that had been pressed to gunshots, trying to stop the bleeding.
the lower half of his face was covered, allowing you to see from his eyes up. his sandy blonde hair was ruffled.
you quickly turned your attention back to price.
âlove, what are you doinâ here? you should be in bedââ he began, but you waved a hand as you stepped further into the room. you pulled your iv pole in behind you, then kicked the door shut.
âdonât talk, just listen. i still mean what i said when you came to visit. the only reason im here right now is because you havenât put in for my fucking transfer.â you hissed.
the captainâs eyes widened, his face taking on a sheepish expression at the revelation that heâd been caught. simon stood quietly beside him, eyes trained on you. you ignored him.
âlove, i didnât want to do anything before you were readyââ he began. you cut him off.
âbullshit! you didnât want to do anything because you donât want me to leave. you want me to forgive you, right? hear you all out? come back and be a happy little family again?â
the room fell eerily silent as you stared at the captain. your heart was roaring in your ears.
âput in the fucking transfer, john.â you finished.
he reluctantly nodded. he inhaled, his eyes glancing at his lieutenant briefly, before he spoke again.
âof course, love. âm sorry.â
you didnât say anything else. you turned to go, your back to the men, when simonâs voice cut through the air.
âyou should be respectful to your captain, sergeant.â
you froze as you took in his words. was he fucking serious?
you didnât turn around. you trained your eyes on the door as you spoke words through gritted teeth.
âyou should watch your tongue, lieutenant, before I fucking cut it off.â
with that, you pulled open the door and stepped into the hallway, slamming it loudly behind you.
