Hello!
Tumblr media
Figured I’d make a little intro post now that I’m settling into this account! My name is Alexzandria, and I was a chronic tumblr user in middle school/high school, but now I’m back to the chaos!
Tumblr media
A little about me;
- I’m a 24 year old Irish American!
- chronically ill (POTS/MCAS)
- I’m a hearth witch who works with An Morrigan, Persephone, as well as the spirits of my home
- I practice traditional/folk/Appalachian witchcraft
- I’m an aspiring illustrator (pray for me.)
- I have a degree in animation I do not use but I might post some art here and there!
- Usually playing the sims if I’m not working on a craft or reading
- some of my favorite books; Bridgerton, the Practical Magic series, If We Were Villains, The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings, Good Omens, and most of the classics
Tumblr media
Please feel free to come say hi, drop an ask if you’re into that, or send me some book recommendations! I love meeting new people and gaining new perspectives!

[iwwv spoilers]
do yall think everyone in the group knew/assumed of/were suspicious of james & oliver?? like obviously richard and meredith but like the others too?
can you just imagine sweet little wren watching the two cuddle "platonically" on the couch? or chaotic alexander, whos like already gay as hell, just quietly observing them??
honestly too cute for me to handle.

butchered tongue still singing here
Day 3 of AUgust 2024 Challenge: Dark Academia
Rating: Teen and Up
Pairing: James Farrow/Oliver Marks
Words: 8k
Summary:
“What did she say?” he asks. Meredith sucks her bottom lip again, uncharacteristically hesitant. Though Oliver only reintegrated about a week ago, he’s already noticed Meredith’s edge, sharper than ever. She knows her worth, and Oliver guesses, without having asked, that Meredith hasn’t simply climbed the ladder; she’s clawed her way up. “She’s wondering if you’re returning for the reunion. Dellecher. Classes 1996 to 1999.” Oliver freezes up. “Go back to Dellecher?”
Or: Right out of prison, Oliver joins the rest of his Dellecher year for the alum tradition of returning for a week, and someone unexpected shows up. (You know who it is.)
Read on AO3
“Dark Academia” AU for the AUgust 2024 challenge (@augustwritingchallenge)! The collection is here!
This is only halfway beta-read but at least a did a edit read-through myself?

witchcraft in your lips
"She can't go on stage," Filippa announces calmly, and the room explodes into chaos as actors speculate over what will happen, and who will replace Wren as Juliet. "Does anyone know Juliet's lines?" Meredith asks, her voice cutting through the cacophony. The room falls silent, and glances are exchanged, but no one speaks. I look at James sidelong. I don't know all of Juliet's lines, but I know some, from practicing with him day in and day out. Perhaps I know enough to make this work. James catches my gaze, and his eyes flicker with understanding–then excitement–and he nods. I raise my hand.

requested by @demoniccak-e: oliver in a dress!
my apologies for less of oliver in a dress and more of him getting to kiss james on stage aidjkd
to make up for it here's a little sketch of what Oliver's poster would've looked like if he'd actually been cast as Juliet:

This can resonate in summary, with characters giving repeated performances—like the hundreds of portrayals of Richard III and Hamlet in Karen Joy Fowler’s Booth, building up like tragic poison in John Wilkes Booth’s familial bloodstream; like the similarly toxic academic drilling of theatrical artifice of in M. L. Rio’s If We Were Villains, in which an overcommitment to the study of Shakespeare leads to a real-life murder—or, again, in Choi’s Trust Exercise. (Choi wins a particular genre-bending medal for having both a meta-play and a meta-novel in her work.)

If We Were Villains
Tumblr media
This book is popularly marketed as a dark academia book. It follows a group of college actors at a Shakespearian acting school as their lives go awry after the death of one of their fellow students.
If you are looking for a book that heavily features queer characters and themes, I would not recommend this book. I will admit, I am covering it because it is my personal favorite book. There will be spoilers in the next paragraph.
If We Were Villains is subtle with its queer representation- in fact, it could be argued that this is not a queer book at all. The reason I believe it deserves a spot on my blog is because near the end of the book, the main character kisses his friend, and realizes that he probably has always been in love with this friend. There is a conversation at the end of the book that goes,
“'Were you in love with him?' 'Yes,' I say, simply. James and I put each other through the kind of reckless passions Gwendolyn once talked about, joy and anger and desire and despair. After all that, was it really so strange? I am no longer baffled or amazed or embarrassed by it. 'Yes, I was.' It's not the whole truth. The whole truth is, I'm in love with him still.”

So I've just finished reading If We Were Villian's as I've decided to start getting into Dark Academia. One thing that has stuck with is the question of "When did things start to go wrong?".
You could easily say it was Halloween/Macbeth. Richard's behaviour could be said to have started due to the casting of Macbeth. We learn in the very beginning that everyone's more or less become typecast over the course of their time at university, with Richard always getting the leading male role. Whilst everyone has expectations of what roles they'll get, as the constantly lead, maybe Richard grew to not only expect being the leading man but feeling entitled to it. It's not like he doesn't deserve being lead but that doesn't mean no one else does too. Maybe his entitlement to leading male role is what lead to him being shitty to James and everyone else, which is why everyone ultimately accepted to let him die instead of trying to save him.
Maybe it started with Caesar. Something frequently mentioned is how when you play a character, you take on part of that character in you and sometimes it's hard to know when the character ends and the actor begins. Maybe everyone got too deep into their roles where everyone comes together for a murder plot to kill Caesar/Richard. Without knowing it, the plot of Caesar played out in real life, except instead of everyone stabbing Caesar/Richard, everyone but James let him die. Not direct killing but indirect. We know they all feel some guilt around it, we see how it affects everyone after.
You could also say it started well before the beginning of the book. All the years of resentment and possible rivalry building up was always going to lead to disaster, maybe not necessarily the death of one of them but something bad was always going to happen.
I think Macbeth makes the most sense but I prefer the idea that it started with Caesar. I don't know if I'm the only one who isn't 100% sure where the downfall of Richard began but if I'm not the only one, where do you think it started?
