love your blog and your art!! and realised ive been following you for almost ten years so thank you for the quality posts

have you got any thoughts on ralsei and noelle in terms of both of them taking on “the girl” role in the game? or i guess rather ralsei trying to be the girl in his own meta and sorta weird way. i know youve drawn them together a couple times but would love to hear any analysis if you have thoughts (if youve already posted about this and i missed it my bad! feel free to ignore)

well damn that's flattering. wish I had some kind of membership program so I could give you a little gift, haha

anyway. this is something I've touched on before but only really spelled out once so you're good. I think there's several factors at play with ralsei's metatextual femininity: his status as the party squishy mage/healer, his status as kris's (and by extension, the player's) love interest, his obsession with roles and subservience, and the fact that ralsei is probably meant to be as appealing to the player as possible. none of those things are INHERENTLY feminine of course, but they are in the context of a story with an audience. we don't know for sure yet how ralsei feels about all that, but I'd wager he either thinks he wants it or thinks it has to be his purpose and he wants to do a good job at it. ralsei is like..... the wife. he's the perfect wife. and he's really good at it! the audience LOVES ralsei! whenever my art gets reposted on reddit, there are way more romantically charged or even sexually explicit comments about ralsei than any other character. when I posted my "choose your bride" illustration, most of the people commenting said they would choose ralsei over noelle, with some even saying that it's because noelle "already belongs to susie".

and that leads into his parallels with noelle. like ralsei, noelle is a fragile magic user, is generally more shy and demure (though both of them can break out of that easily), is shown as pining for the object of her affections, and she's slotted into the role of "the love interest" for susie (or for kris/the player, but I'm gonna focus on normal route here). the ferris wheel scene also directly parallels the acid tunnel of love- both forcing the two "couples" to be alone together in a deliberately romantic setting with nothing to do but talk. I've already talked plenty about noelle's roles as the girl, the bride, the damsel, etc. so I won't get into it again, but I think the connections made between kralsei and suselle are worth keeping an eye on. there's nothing to indicate that susie and noelle's budding romance is anything but sweet and genuine, but at the same time you have to wonder what it means that the game is pushing them together in a way so similar to kris and ralsei.

to reference classic jrpg dragon quest v: hand of the heavenly bride, nera comes out of nowhere and was tailor-made to be a wife, while bianca is a childhood friend you have an actual prior connection with. but it doesn't really matter who you choose to marry. in the end they both get kidnapped and sidelined as soon as they're done having your babies.

Isagi Yoichi is the epitome of what is called "A fool in love". You only have to observe the way he looks at you to be convinced. He practically has hearts in his eyes whenever it comes to you. This is even more obvious when he is on the field, his face is focused on the ball and his teammates and the opposing team, then his aggressive gaze falls on you. And as if you have cast a spell on him, his gaze instantly softens and the hearts return to his eyes.

Isagi LOVES your thighs. He likes to rest his head on them to take a nap while you read a book or watch television. Once, while he was lying down with his head on them while you were reading your novel of the week, he was watching you. He thought you were so beautiful with those reading glasses on the tip of your nose, your gaze focused on the book. He loved watching your reactions when you read certain passages. He stared at you for so long with those eternal hearts in his eyes, that you ended up noticing.

"You look at me like I'm the eighth wonder of the world"

you said jokingly. But only god knows how right you were at that moment. For Isagi, you are literally the only wonder of the world. Not to mention the fact that you are literally the goddess of his.

Know that each of his "I love you" and compliments he gives you are sincere, never ever did he think otherwise.

Also, since you've been in his life, there's one thing he's discovered about himself: he's a bit of a masochist. He even blames you for it

"Ah but it's your fault, you're the one who made me like this. I can't help it if you're too sexy when you're angry."

Oh, he tells you that often. He doesn't tell you but he loves it when you lecture him or make him angry. Once he didn't do the dishes even though you kindly asked him to. He preferred to sit in front of the television to watch a match. So you got angry with him and after 10 minutes of lecturing, he said

"Do you know that you're terribly and divinely beautiful when you're angry?" With a smile plastered on your lips.

You rolled your eyes before heading to the kitchen to do the task he hadn't done.

He let slip this sentence, implying that he had done it on purpose to make you angry.

You made him seem extraordinarily naive. He drinks all your words like water, whether they are true or false.

"Yoichi, did you know that it is impossible to touch your elbow with your tongue?"

You told him once.

"Oh really? If you say so, it must surely be true."

That's all!!!?? He didn't even try like 99% of people to check. The fact that he didn't ask any questions alarmed you.... and if you...

"Oh my god!!! Yoichi!!!"

"What the hell!?"

He watched you panic.

"We saw a unicorn walking around attacking people in Shibuya!!"

No, that's too big of a lie, he'll never believe that...

"SERIOUSLY!!!!??? WHAT ARE THEY WAITING FOR TO CATCH HIM?!"

He says that but his trembling voice and the drops of sweat on his face lead you to have doubts about his honesty on this one.

Disclaimer: These are just my observations. If they don't resonate with you, simply read and move on.

Thanks for the tag x3 Sorry it took me so long to get to it haha. I'll highlight characters in red if I had a lot to say about multiples in one answer.

Favorite girl: I think I'd say Jinx because I love her character. All her scenes in S1 are compelling and tense, and I found her to be thoroughly tragic by the end. She's the thread that holds everything else together and it's beautiful. Also Ambessa and Sevika are both super hot and I always look forward to seeing them.

Favorite boy: I like boys. O_O My favorites are Silco, Singed, and Viktor. Silco is one of my favorite villain characters, very layered and complex, and I was genuinely intrigued and excited as I learned more of his story in S1. I'm also totally guilty of mega-simping for him in S2 despite how my opinions of the story would later sour. Singed honestly just has a fantastic voice and animation that hits me the same way Rango's animation does, where "ugly" characters are treated with such care that they're a treat to watch anyway. He's so stimulating aaaa. Finally, Viktor's arc in S1 is one of my favorites, handled patiently and expertly, and his arc in S2 has quite a few problems, but I still... really enjoy seeing him, and seeing him with Jayce, so I don't tend to be bothered by how S2 handled Viktor.

Least favorite character: You know what? I was so close to posting this with "S2 Caitlyn" because she's a nasty person who never gets to have a proper arc in any direction, but I think a more fitting answer would be S2 Vi. Caitlyn being an awful person in some scenes was still interesting and believable, if a bit rushed, and I would have been fine with her character going that path had it been executed a bit better. Vi, though, is just... turned into a sad lapdog who doesn't act on her own at any point and is just depressing to watch, even in her "happy" moments. God damn, they destroyed her this season. ><

Favorite ships: Zaundads, Sinco, JayVik, and Jilco. If I elaborated on each, I'd feel like I spent way too much time on this, but they each have dynamics I enjoy for different reasons.

Least favorite ship: S2 Caitvi. They were cute in S1, but S2 made Caitlyn an abusive war criminal and then pretended that didn't need to be properly addressed before Vi just gave herself to her. Blegh.

Favorite side character: Lately, it's Salo because I like em pathetic ahaha~ I've always loved Mylo too, adorable little Junkrat kid. x3c

Favorite songs: Oooooh this is a hard one. x3 Goodbye and What Could Have Been will always hit me so hard and remind me how watching Arcane for the first time felt, and for that, they're extra special. I think Playground still gives me those vibes too. I also adore Guns For Hire, and Dirty Little Animals goes so hard. S2 introduced quite a few songs I love too. Ashes and Blood, Renegade, and Spin the Wheel are favorites. Favorite score songs are: The Bridge, The City of Progress, You're Stronger Than You Think, You Can't Escape the Past, A Story of Opposites, Stubborn to the End, I Can Help Them, The Era of Hextech, Revenge, You're a Jinx, A Bicentennial, The Assailant, Romance, Traitor, She's Back, The Toy Boat, I'm Right Here, Showdown, First Steps, You're Perfect, and I'm far less familiar with S2's score, but I can't stop listening to I Promised You. <3

Favorite episode: S1 episode 3. There are tons of scenes I love throughout the story, but this episode marked one of the greatest experiences I've ever had watching a show.

Least favorite episode: So like... I'm not entirely sure which entire episode is my least favorite, so it might be easier to list "chunks", like all the Mel/Black Rose stuff is a boring waste of time to me, and all the final battle stuff is like... uuuuugh. But I didn't just wanna say s2 episode 9 because I do still like the Jayce and Viktor stuff even if, critically, I don't think most of it makes sense x'D. Those two are legit just a guilty pleasure this season and I'm okay with that.

Favorite duo: Oooooh, mmmm..... I think Jayce and Viktor fit the term "duo" best out of my favorites. My other fave is Jinx and Silco, even though they basically never work together, but their interactions are priceless. <3

Favorite design: Aaaaa so many good ones, ummm... honestly? Powder is one of my favorite characters to watch and her design is adorable and complex (a lot of characters are complex in design, but ye). I really love the mismatched look of a lot of Zaun outfits. Also past Silco is um, I'm locking him in my basement. >u>

Least favorite design: Hm... so... I don't think I've looked at any design and hated it, just felt like a few of them were kinda... not as appealing to me as previous versions. So, I prefer Ambessa's pre-S2A3 designs, and I think it's because she looks too slender in her final look compared to previous ones making her look so big and imposing. I think Jinx's newest design is... overrated and kind of messy to look at. I know she's a messy character, so that would fit, but I dunno, there's something missing or... something. It's also hard not to let my feelings on the story taint my feelings for some of the designs, like Vi and Caitlyn's, which look pretty damn cool actually, but I just always picture that final cuddly scene with them and it makes me feel icky.

Favorite scene: The Guns For Hire sequence ✨

Least favorite scene: The Silco, Vander, and Felicia flashback because it ruins the motivations of Silco and Vander, not just to adopt their kids, but to free Zaun from Piltover's oppressive hold. Felicia is pretty and even has some fun sassiness to her personality, but I want her far away from my boys.

I don't like this ending on a negative, so Imma add one more question myself:

Favorite visual moment: Of course, I can hardly pick less than a dozen, but I'll just list a couple off the top of my head, not counting previously mentioned stuff of course. I love the scene of the mage saving young Jayce and his mother. It's so gorgeous and fluid and the music adds so much too. Gahhhh- I also super love that shot of Silco leaning back while smoking right after he talks to Marcus.

"dean, what is this?" it's comical, how similarly sam reacts in the face of the exact same thing he'd already once been through. this time, instead of the winchester family car standing in front of him, it's baby and another half-naked girl. you. what the hell was sam's life right now?

you smile widely at him, your hands flap in the pockets of your big brown coat, flailing excitedly. "hi, sammy!"

sam's eyes flit over to dean, then, narrowing in on him. "what is this?" repeated again, because dean's silence was loaded with answers sam probably didn't want to hear but needed to anyways.

you don't even seem deterred by him refusing to address you properly. like, how were people supposed to address journals? you didn't know. this seemed fine. anything sam did was fine.

dean's head drops to look at the ground, his dimples deep in his cheeks, giving away his grin even as he hides his expression. "listen—"

"dean."

"baby was lonely..."

baby was oddly, uncharacteristically silent until then, when she chimes in, of course, to defend dean. she always does. it's not a surprise that she jumps in but a surprise it took her so long. "i was!"

"so..." dean doesn't even try this time to stifle his amusement. he's laughing. sam's staring at him like he's grown two new heads, and he has, just in the form of girls that didn't used to be girls, and dean is laughing. "so she told me—"

"i did. i did tell him." baby grabs your hand, lifting it into the air and dragging her toward sam, to which sam instinctively recoiled a step. "this is your dad's journal."

a lot of pieces were missing. baby tended to do that, too: defend dean, and forget the rest of the story in favor of skipping to the ending. trying to teach her to read some of sam's favorite books was a nightmare.

it takes him a long minute to process the end of the story she'd said, too. he stares at her, a little disbelieving laugh falling out of his mouth. "what?"

his gaze flicks between you, to baby, to dean. again, he asks, "no, what?" dean's shoulders lift in a shrug as if he wasn't partially liable for whatever this was. "dad's journal? that's not true. can't be. i left it on—"

"the desk," you speak up for the first time since arriving here, that same warm smile on your lips, "you left it on the desk over there, and at 11:03 am, baby put it in her pocket."

baby nods fiercely. "my pockets are very big. it fit right in there."

"and dean took her to a witch," sam's eyes narrow at that part of your story, flicking back up to dean's with blatant irritation. dean fucking giggles, the bastard. "and baby asked very nicely to turn the book into me! so you had someone, too!"

the fact that this was a normalcy, now, in sam's life was completely fucking baffling. he bypasses dean and his little bursts of giggles and turns his attention to you, fully.

your coat looks familiar. almost like the one he'd brought with him from college, just a little more worn and faded, somehow. a pair of glasses rest on the bridge of your nose, stains that look suspiciously like coffee and beer on the big cream-colored t-shirt you wore. your legs—

sam did not, in fact, look at your legs. he caught a glimpse of tattoo ink on the bare skin and promptly looked back up, clearing his throat. "this is insane."

you break into a grin, clapping your hands together. "insanely good!"

he did not forget about baby. dean was to blame for encouraging and entertaining baby's ideas, but it was baby who started this. he puts on his best stern face, trying to pretend that he wasn't for a moment thinking that it was sweet that baby had done all of this for him.

"you can't just go to witches and demand they turn things into people for you." what a crazy sentence to say, but okay. this was just sam's life now. "you could have... i dunno, bought me a tamagotchi instead, if you wanted me to have something to care about." sam knew he would have killed that tamagotchi, but you didn't need to know that, and neither did baby. he is trying to instill good behavior into the chaos that was the both of you, damn it. "but it is very nice, that you thought i needed..."

he trails off, his eyes drifting back over to you again. what, exactly, did baby think he needed? she usually spelled it out to him in harsh, honest words, not knowing any better. in any other case, baby would have just told him straight up, like, you need to write better. i can't learn to read if you are just scribbling, which was something he'd heard plenty of in the last few weeks.

but this? he couldn't tell her intentions, or dean's intentions on going along with it. instead, all sam had to go off of was you standing in front of him, looking like a dream and like you thought he was a dream too.

"lore," he whispers it, like it was a thought that just occurred to him, sticking in his brain and unrelenting. "it's nice to meet you, lore."

with baby, she'd been absolutely hellish about calling her anything but the name dean gave her. with you, your face seems to light up at the name. as if it lived inside of you all along, the name melds into your features and sits as easily on your skin like your glasses do.

"technically, you already met me," you say, moving the t-shirt collar away from your clavicles and pointing at yet another scrawl of ink, this time— sam falters.

an idle doodle he'd done as a kid, sitting on the corner of the table while john scribbled notes into one side of the pages, and he'd been left to draw in the margins on the other side. three messy, uneven hearts over your left clavicle, and his even messier handwriting, spelling his name.

his smile is involuntary, dragging up on his lips and punctuating in his cheeks. "well, come on," he says with an exaggerated sigh, nodding toward the rest of the books sitting on the desktop, "we've got a case to work on."

omg, its you again! hola hahahahaha Yea that's my bad lol I tend to draw "story beats" out of order so I can see why the confusion. So if you don't mind, imma kinda look like this

First Meeting - The start of it all, atp the Shaolin have been winning and gaining back territories and recourses from the Red Dragon. Kung Lao is called in to "fix" the problem. Raiden only knows by word of mouth about Kung Lao (vise versa Kung Lao with Raiden). Kung Lao is more amused about this new "champion" as he doesn't see him as a threat (until he gets his ass beat in that first encounter lol) obviously the two still don't like each other.

The Girls are Fighting - probably the least amount of drawings out of the arcs. honestly that one drawing is even leaning more towards "changing Point". essentially, This is the messy part of the story. both the champions don't like each other what so ever. its also the longest part of the "story" (months time in the story) Mavado/ rest of the Red Dragon starts picking up about this new threat. In turn they put more pressure on Kung Lao, it makes him so fucking mad. Its as if he's not a threat anymore. (he still very much so). Raiden on the other hand also gets pressure from his piers, the champion should have already fixed most of the issues already. ((side note - yea they should go after Liu Kang but *plot twist* Liu Kang is actually weakened. Its why he wont just rewrite the universe, something went terribly wrong, plus he's not a "public" figure)) both sides allies think they are getting "obsessed" with the other.

Changing Point - Raiden by default is a nice person, even in this rough situation. So seeing how this war just brings so much pain and suffering he goes for a different tactic. Diplomacy with Kung Lao- just enough to try and reason with him. It doesn't exactly work and in that moment of vulnerability Kung lao takes his chance to disarm Raiden. Raiden can keep up with Kung Lao but he panicked with his amulet stolen, so he did the most crazy thing (aka kiss him). If you asked, Raiden has no idea why he would even go for that tactic he just panicked lol. But he didn't hate it, no matter how much he tells himself otherwise.

Feelings? - Mavado gets wind of the new annoying champion, and sees how Kung Lao is annoyed with him...or is he? Mavado knows Kung Lao's mannerisms, hes 90% sure its not hatred. And knowing that, he feels...annoyed, mad, upset even? but instead of actually thinking about it, he acts petty and tries to hurt them both (alt. to fighting). He hurts Raiden at the party- Raiden doesn't know why he's upset seeing that. And Kung Lao doesn't know why he cares for Raiden's feelings. - Kung Lao knows how to sneak around (he had to for survival) so he often goes to see the enemy front (its often how he's able to defeat the enemy) but this one night is different. He see's Raiden very close to another individual (smoke). He doesn't care who or what that person is, he does not like them being that close to Raiden. (this is bit of a toxic trait- not enough to thinking of killing that individual- but immense jealousy)

Earth Realms Champion Injured - Raiden is one man, and while he's very strong and powerful, he's still a humble farm boy. He tries to please everyone and over works himself to the point of almost passing out in battle. The pressure and stress has got to him at this point. Despite telling everyone he's fine. He almost dies in battle but Kung Lao comes in just in time to save him. He sees the state Raiden in and is pissed. (just to note they are not fighting each other here, this is a separate issue trying to take over- aka Shang Tsung's army) Long story short (i wanna draw something later lol) Raiden is out of commission for a bit.

Something Changed - Raiden got better! but something strange keep happening during his recovery. Little gifts and such keep popping up in his room, he tries asking the others, but they deny leaving anything. He knows who it is, but he doesn't want to believe it really because why would he care about him? they are enemies, sure there's something, and he's scared. He shouldn't have these feelings, but he does. Is Kung Lao playing with his feelings? Is he just messing with him before killing him once and for all? He doesn't know. - Until one night, he stayed up enough to catch Kung Lao enter his room looking...normal. Soft. A little exhausted by the bags under his eyes. Its the first time in a while the two have gotten to see and talk to each other after all the shit they gone through. Just the two of them alone for once. They both know things were never going to stay the same again, and they don't hate that. That night they embraced each other as though they were meant to be together.

Omg Change Pt. 2 - Still working on it LMAOOOOOO--- the two now know what the other is feeling. orrrrr they're trying lol. Kung Lao is raised to keep emotions in otherwise its a weakness and can be used against you. Raiden learns people pleasing is how he is able to help his village. Its how he got injured in the first place. so they are both trying to work on it lol - will they have a happy ending? idk but thats for later hahaha.

Theres still gaps in the story, but honestly that comes in when I actually draw them in lol

So just some small spark notes I couldnt fit up above- - Raiden becomes more tolerate of Kung Lao around Changing Point. His feelings also start to slowly build up. Same with Kung Lao. - While he's not exactly against sex, Raiden definitely had a more tame upbringing. He's raised as a farm boy, and trained as a monk. Kung Lao existence alone is making the poor boy spiral LOL. Poor man is having a crises as to why he's feeling these things, he shouldn't! but he does! (also kind of makes him insecure but Kung Lao reassures him to never think like that) - The parts from changing point to omg change pt. 2 is actually short in terms of time compared to the girls are fighting.

Sour Green Apples Epilogue

indulged my delusional fantasies too deeply last night and now i can't get over the idea of an total amnesiac!caleb who feels nothing but resentment towards mc for being the reason why he is where he is—in ever's hand as their puppet, all because of his past self's alleged love for her.

and by the end of the whole journey of love & deepspace's story, with evils defeated and mc now understanding just who and what she really is, amnesiac!caleb moves far away from mc in hopes to never run into her again until one day he inevitably did.

he sees her at his local area's diner. he wants to confront her, ask her if she's stalking him like how his past self stalked her. however, when they do make a brief eye contact through the glass window panes, she doesn't recognise him.

...mc is now also an amnesiac, has forgotten all of their time together like he did, but he can't figure out how she lost all her memories in the first place—because really, how dare she forget them.

his past self went through hell for her, so the least she could do is remember just how much he went through for her, knowing the reason why he cut her out of his life. it was the perfect punishment for her—to live with the knowledge she was the reason behind his sufferings, and be aware that's why he never wanted to be near her again.

in his investigation, he comes across a report that states that mc had undergone a heart transplant surgery, trading out her aether core heart for a regular one. weirdly enough, the aftermath of that surgery included memory loss.

what's more weird is that the report had predicted the memory loss. he convinces himself it must have been a deliberate choice for mc as to why she was willing to undergo this surgery despite that—so she could forget him.

he can't help but resent her even more in her blissfully oblivious state.

i suffered for you.

i went through hell for you.

i sold myself for you.

the least you could do was to live in misery and guilt knowing i never want you in my life again...

...but now you've forgotten me and all of the sacrifices i made for you? just like that?

how. fucking. dare. you.

he doesn't care that she gave away the aether core heart to revive a long lost civilisation, doesn't give a fuck that the main reason why she traded her aether core heart for a regular one was so she could finally be a normal girl.

that aether core heart was the reason why they met in the first place, why she was locked up in that godforsaken research facility with him as a test subject to be studied. that aether core was the reason why his past self loved her so fucking much, he became obsessed with protecting her.

she gave it away.

what's more infuriating is the five men hanging around her, hanging on to her every word, who don't seem to be bothered interacting with a girl who's forgotten all of the sacrifices they made for her.

mc is living in total bliss now, in a delusional reality where she's just a normal girl with a normal life, but lucky enough to have more-than-just-eligible bachelors caring for her.

amnesiac!caleb couldn't allow that.

and so one day amnesiac!mc finds out a new neighbor is moving into the apartment unit across from her. he introduces himself at her doorstep, offering her his homemade apple pie, but it was made with sour green apples for some reason.

girls last tour, as the name implies, follows two girls on a tour journey through the ruins of a post-apocalyptic world. they scavenge for food and fuel, encounter remnants from long-forgotten cultures, and day after hopeless day they choose to carry on forward.

while this may sound bleak and depressing, it's actually an iyashikei (slice of life). and let me preface this by saying i usually do not enjoy iyashikei stories, but i wholeheartedly think girls last tour is nothing short of a masterful work of art.

the reason i think it stands out from all others in its genre is because it doesn't shy away from despair, but despite it (or perhaps even because of it) still has this undercurrent of hope and a profound appreciation for life.

this juxtaposition of a world ravaged by war and death against two girls trying to make the most of their life day after day is beautifully poignant and poetic. we see the best and the worst of humanity—and it's surprisingly wholesome in its melancholy.

borrowing from the official synopsis:

But as long as the two are together, even an existence as bleak as theirs has a ray or two of sunshine in it (...) For two girls in a world full of nothing, the experiences and feelings the two share give them something to live for…

so yes, it's a slice of life, but if you're willing to look deeper, it has some incredibly profound themes. it gets very philosophical but it doesn't intend to give you all the answers; rather, it simply allows for contemplation on humanity and life as a whole, and it brings it all back to the here and now.

it's about choosing to keep going—to keep living another day even as the world is falling apart around you. it's about finding joy in the small things you stumble upon along your way. it's about watching these two girls rediscover humanity through what we leave behind and learning to see your own life through different eyes.

it's about choosing not to succumb into despair. yes, maybe you could've made better choices along the way—but you still shouldn't bring yourself to regret the life you've lived.

it's about realizing life is about making the most of it that you're able to amid your circumstances and living it to the fullest. it's about how the people you meet, the experiences you've lived, the things you've learned... you carry them with you always.

it's about how humanity is interconnected through our inherent curiosity and passion and love and perhaps our beautifully pointless endeavors, and how all of these give us meaning even if it will all come to an end someday.

plain and simple, it's about how beautiful it is to live. how even despite all the horrors, you can still find joy in living.

i don't think it's an exaggeration to call girls last tour life-changing, and if any of these themes resonate with you i'm sure you'll end up loving this story too.

some people say this story gave them depression. but tbh i think they're missing the point: this story will cure your depression <3 (yes i'm being hyperbolic but ykwim)

anyway if you'd like to get into it i'd recommend watching the anime first!! (i think the manga's visual contrast and use of negative space work better for the tone, but the anime genuinely did such a wonderful job with the music and some sequences in particular, and imo even elevated them. so for your first experience i'd say 100% anime)

however, the anime didn't adapt the full story and while you are able to get the overall themes from the anime, imo some of the best chapters can actually be found towards the end of the manga.

it's a very faithful adaptation otherwise, so you can pick it up from chapter 30 if you don't want to read from the beginning (and it's only 47 chapters so it's super short!)

also if you watch/read pleaseeee let me know what you think i literally don't know anyone else who's into it and i've been kind of going insane about it 😭

TLDR: if you like stories that are philosophical and contemplative, that don't shy away from despair but also choose to find the beauty in life, then this story is for you <3

Harry and Draco survive the apocalypse. This is what happens after.

If you've watched the Last of Us, you know that episode.

It's one of the best hours of television I've ever seen, even if it did leave me a sobbing, incoherent mess for weeks.

And so when I came across this fic based on that very episode, I was intrigued. And Dodger assured me — she ASSURED me — it has a not-tragic ending, so I pulled up my big-girl socks and read the damn thing. And, oh boy, am I ever glad I did. Good doesn't even begin to describe it. It's PERFECT.

For the design concept, I knew I wanted to incorporate similar typography as the show, but also tie in some of the imagery repeated throughout the fic.

When I found this still life painting of wild strawberries by Adriaen Coorte in the public domain, I knew it would become the cover.

The fic is only 41k words, so designed it as a legal quarto, and it's the perfect little paperback size.

I used Affinity Publisher to create my typeset. It's the second fic I've typeset using this program, and I highly recommend it as a more affordable (and non-subscription) alternative to Adobe.

There were a lot of scene breaks in this fic, so I broke them up with horizontal lines when dates were indicated and tiny strawberry graphics when they weren't.

I was lucky to be able to include art by @babooshkart, which Dodger commissioned for the fic. It's so gorgeous and suits the fic perfectly.

I hope you love it, Dodger. Your story means so much to me — as does your friendship!

Actual February Reads

The Thrifty Guide to Ancient Rome: A Handbook for Time Travelers by Jonathan Stokes: As someone who knows next to nothing about Ancient Rome, this was a very fun way to learn the basics (and get reminded that ancient royals were very brutal).

East by Edith Pattou: I read this once a long time ago and disliked it. Now, it might deserve a spot on the all-time best retellings list. The multiple first-person narrators and lots of real-world details give it a nicely literary quality. However, I can't shake a feeling of disappointment--the very real-world setting makes me more uncomfortable with the way she presented some magical elements, and makes it lose a lot of the sense of wonder, especially in the ending parts, by taking away the most fairy-tale elements (no riding the four winds, for example.)

Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh: I've talked about this one a lot. My dislike/disappointment built to an explosion of outright hatred by the time I got to the ocean liner chapters, but it resolved into a nice ending that's been annoyingly helpful spiritually.

Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by Jessica Day George: Another "East of the Sun, West of the Moon" retelling that I liked better the second time. I hated the first two-thirds--too much focus on her brother's story, too many random elements that felt like a third-rate Disney movie, and horrible behavior from the hero and heroine. The transformed prince forcing a sapient polar bear to die? Not cool. And the girl! Looking at the prince's face is an understandable mistake in the original; here, she is surrounded by people who beg her to stop investigating, who are being killed because she's investigating, and she still doesn't stop! How am I supposed to be on her side? But then the moment her journey starts, this story comes very close to my ideal retelling of the fairy tale. Help from mysterious old women! The fairy tale imagery of the different winds! I wasn't crazy about the complicated explanations of how the magic works (never a strength of the author's), but otherwise, I loved the ending almost as much as I disliked the rest of the book.

Plato in 90 Minutes by Paul Strahern: Too flippant and opinionated, but it did what it promised: I got the gist of Plato's life story in less than an hour.

Deus Caritas Est by Pope Benedict XVI: I'd recently read/listened to some things about similar topics, so this wasn't as mindblowing as it might have been, but it still had some lovely thoughts. I especially loved the explanation of how charity is a vital function of the Church.

The Fairy's Mistake by Gail Carson Levine: I didn't expect to like this reread, given that my retelling of "Diamonds and Toads" is partially a rebuttal to the cynical/satirical attitude in this one. I didn't like it much, (and I outright hated the "she fell in love with the prince despite him showing no character growth" of the ending), but it wasn't quite as obnoxious as I remembered, and it was cute enough for what it was.

Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine: I still love this book. I'm at the point where I'm so familiar with the good parts of the book that the only new observations are nitpicks, but it's still a top-tier retelling.

Sir Orfeo, translated by J.R.R. Tolkien: I finally read it! It felt less like Orpheus than I expected, but there is a lot of resonance with other fairy tales of this type, and I loved the strong relationships on display.

Cuddy Yarborough's Daughter by Una Silberrad: Once again, Silberrad's strength is the characters. Sam's a charming, sensible extrovert, Violet's a sensible parentified daughter, Maud's a charming beauty whose thoughtlessness becomes more and more horrifying as the book goes on. Not much really happened, but I'm glad I pushed through and saw the end of the character arcs. I was really dreading that the endgame was going to be a marriage between a young girl and an adult she's known since childhood, but Silberrad managed to pull it off in the least creepy way possible (the guy has zero romantic thoughts about her until like the last page of the book when it's clear she's in love with him), so I could almost be okay with it.

Prudence and the Romantic Poet by Nina Clare: The romance had its cute moments, and I liked the idea of the story, but the execution was pretty dull. Especially in the last chapters, where most scenes became a parade of names as we meet up with all the other characters from the rest of the series.

Vibrant Paradoxes by Bishop Robert Barron: Pretty good essays. All nice and short. Nothing mind-blowing (I can't remember very many specifics of any of them), and these essays make it clearer where my theology diverges from his, but I'm glad I read it.

THAT'S HOW CHARLIE DIES??? i mean i know the show has a penchant for killing off every character who's not a winchester brother or an angel of thursday but good god. what the fuck. charlie was such a good and enjoyable recurring character, and she had such a fandom impact that i've seen, and she's only around for THREE SEASONS?? (sidebar: it's amazing she has the presence she does for only being around for a couple episodes in the long run!) but: was this necessary? and she just dies offscreen after her skills are utilized to progress the plot of decoding the book of the damned?? oh my god. what in the actual fuck. i'm finding myself getting genuinely very upset at her death. she did not fucking deserve that. and i can absolutely see why the fan response to her death is what it is now. completely fucking unjustified and throwaway and useless.
