Bound: Naked by @bixgirl1
Featuring art by: @slyssnakes Typeset and bound by: me, @phoenixortheflame
Harry and Draco are sent on an undercover assignment to catch a Dark wizard — which might not be so bad if it weren't at a Muggle nudist resort. Now Draco has to deal with a very interested Harry, temptation he's long-since learned to ignore, and threats around every corner — including the one to his heart.
My first time doing a cut out! Well... it's not exactly a cut out, because I didn't cut into the cover board. But more on that later.

I made this bind for @dogearedbindery as part of the Summer of Drarry Exchange hosted by @itsphantasmagoria.
I am not big on summer aesthetics. Bright, fruity colours just don't do it for me. Don't get me wrong, other people embrace these elements beautifully, but they just don't feel like me.
For this bind I kept things simple (naked you might even say), featuring a nearly all black-and-white typeset (save for the art by @slyssnakes), a neutral cover, minimalist HTV, and this amazing black-and-white waves chiyogami paper.
The cut-out effect was achieved using a bit of card stock. It was really quite easy, and I'll definitely do it again.
Cut a piece of card stock the same size as your cover board, then, with a box cutter, cut out the shape of the window.
Layer and glue a sheet of decorative paper on the cover board.
Make your case, but instead of the front cover board, use the card stock.
Cut the window out of the book cloth, but leave about 1cm around the edges to turn into the window and glue down.
Glue the cover board to the card stock.
Finish the case as usual.

I did just a single-colour endband, but I used DAS' two-colour front bead method as I find it's the most forgiving. Plus it looks really good!
I rounded the spine on this one — and, y'all, I think I'm sold. A rounded spine (even if not backed) looks soooo slick.

This bind was almost a complete fucking disaster. For a few reasons, actually. First is I used Allure book cloth, which wasn't sticking nicely to the card stock and cover boards. Secondly, I made the hinge gaps too small. I thought because I was rounding I should make them smaller. WRONG. I discovered just how wrong I was when I cased it and tested the covers only to discover it wouldn't open. I quickly removed the text block from the case, replaced the end pages, remade the case using a different book cloth and standard hinge gaps, and voila. (Thank you to @epitomereally for talking me off the ledge while this crisis was occurring.)

The typeset is pretty simple and features three pieces of very sexy art by @slyssnakes. I can't even share chapter three's header as it will no doubt get my post flagged.
I hope you love the bind, Shannon! I'm going to have to make one for myself now....
And @bixgirl1, if you're out there, I'd love to make you a copy, too, so don't hesitate to DM me!
As always, this was made as a gift. No money (or other capital) was involved in this exchange.
Naked is free to read on A03.
And remember, folks, don't be a dick; don't commodify fic!

Bound: Rookie Moves by peu_a_peu
Typeset and bound by: me, @phoenixortheflame
About a month ago, my five year old said, "What if you did a bind of Rookie Moves, but instead of Rookie Moves you called it 'Rookie Moooooooos'."
I'm telling you, my kid is a genius.

My dust jacket design came together pretty quickly. I knew I wanted to use black and white photos with punchy pops of colour. I even managed photos ft. Draco- and Harry-coded cows (and if you zoom in closely on the front cover you'll see I gave them some props).

I've been really into printing designs on the inside covers of my paperbacks, and so I thought, why not do that on the dust jackets, too?? This was a last-minute addition and I'm so happy with how it turned out.

Cover material is Verona book cloth in 509 Orange Blast. I've been wanting to use this colour forever, but didn't have the right fic for it.
I was originally going to also put cow print on the front and back covers with HTV, but decided against it and went with just a simple spine title using layered black and white HTV.

This was my first time rounding and backing, and I think it turned out quite well for a first attempt.

There are some mistakes made. I used PVA instead of paste to case it in and hadn't yet gotten to the part of DAS's video where he said to set the shoulders first so the text block doesn't shift. There are some wrinkles in the endpapers on the inside-front cover, but otherwise it looks (and more importantly functions) nicely.

The typeset is all brand new as well. I leaned hard into the cow theme, but tried to keep it minimalist, too. I'm really happy how the newspaper formatting turned out — as well as my chapter heads.

This bind is a gift for a friend. I messaged her yesterday to say, "It's simultaneously the most beautiful and dumbest thing I've ever made."
As ever, a huge thanks goes out to my pals who helped me if not with guidance then definitely with moral support (not to be confused with "morale" support). @sits-bound @maleekamolscreates @epitomereally @citrusses @copticcowgirl @plor-bindery, you are all wonderful.

"Expect"
Written for @drarrymicrofic weekly prompt "Expect" | 265 words | Summer bingo squares: dialogue-only, mpreg, omegaverse, Azkaban, pureblood culture, rated G
"I don't know what more you want from me, mother." "To do your duty, as all Pureblood heirs must." "And haven't I done just that? Landed the perfect Alpha and gotten him to impregnate me—" "If you think the Potter boy—" "Lucius, please. Let me handle this. Draco, your father and I are grateful. Your union with Harry Potter will do wonders for regaining our rightful place in society, regardless of our personal opinions on his suitability as your mate." "And I suppose it doesn't even matter to you that he makes me happy?" "Happiness is a luxury not every Omega can expect. That you've found it despite the odds, well, as your mother of course that matters." "How could he possibly make you happy? That half-blood knows nothing of our ways." "Unbelievable! You'd both still be in Azkaban if it weren't for Harry. As you both enjoy your own luxuries, I hope you remember it's his mercy that allows you to have even a semblance of the life you think you're owed." "Draco, darling—" "I can't stay and listen to him, mother. I won't. I'm leaving." "Back to that muggle flat, no fit place for my son—" "Lucius, stop it, please. Draco, don't go. Bopsi has made a splendid lunch, and I wanted to show you the orchids that bloomed this morning." "I can't. If you want to be a part of your grandchild's life, I suggest you find a way to let go of this outdated bigotry. We're not raising him like this. When you're ready to change, you know where to find me."
Thanks for the speedy, encouraging alpha @smugrobotics

I'm a chronic long-haired Draco illustrator, so I challenged myself to draw the reverse – only now I want to draw them both with long hair, all the time... whoops.
This is my favourite illustration I've ever done tbh

Bound: Nothing Gold Can Stay by @moonflower-rose
Typeset, bind, and illustrations by: me, @phoenixortheflame.
One summer evening, Harry Potter vanished in the middle of dinner with his friends. Four days later he came back. Sort of. Draco Malfoy is on the case.

Well that got out of hand.
So — I planned to bind this for myself and then another for the author. But then, I had to make one for @reveriepi whose recording lulls me to sleep so very often. And one for @sits-bound because she’s a good girl who deserves good things. And of course one for @maleekamolscreates because the fic begins ON OUR BIRTHDAY!

Anyway, paperbacks are dope. Made using the double-fan method. I think I have the process fully memorized now, but if you're interested in learning how, I highly recommend checking out Mally's video on it, which I've watched a dozen times at least.
Cover is 48-lb glossy photo paper covered with soft-touch laminate. The inside cover design is printed directly onto the back of the photo paper and is not finished in any way.
Cover illustrations done by me in Procreate. Cover design done in Canva. Inside cover design as well as full-title page done in Affinity Designer; typeset done in Publisher.

ANOTHER 50 words for that most versatile @drarrymicrofic prompt wound (P.S. in my head this takes place in the same universe as my fic Blade of Sun, but that's just for my own amusement. It stands wholly on its own!)
Their swords clash; a cold and ancient song.
Harry seizes his chance, pushing past Malfoy's guard.
There's a lick of sweat on Malfoy's neck, escaping into his tunic.
Harry falters.
Then he's in the dirt.
Malfoy laughs, triumphant.
Harry's bleeding.
But what's a little wound when it conjures that sound?

Another jayvik book, completed! This is the incredible motion on a circle, by @runesick. Stunning artwork by @marika-misc, who kindly granted me permission to include her art <3
As always, crafty chatting + more pics under the cut!
Whereeee do I even begin with this fic oh my gosh. The worldbuilding is PEAK. There are so many fun things that rune does with the structure that convey the strange, otherworldly, in-between space of the arcane. And the jayvik? AHHHHH. THE YEARNING! THE GRIEF!!!! It's both cosmic horror and sweeping romance at its finest. It's so, so good. I left a comment that was literally *checks notes* 2,000 words??? LMAO. Thank you rune for reading my yapping! I just had to bind your fic; it's been living rent-free in my mind for months now.
Some fun design things! There are a few sections in the second chapter that are written in the style of a screenplay, so I mirrored that in the typeset :3 For font, I went with Courier New, which is (I believe!) the standard for screenplays, and also changed up the justification for the paragraphs to be left-justified.
I really love the resulting effect--the chapter this happens in is about (spoilers aha) Jayce getting tossed into the metaphorical basement of the arcane, and because he's not technically supposed to be there, he's kind of only...partially rendered. But he's also literally aware that he's a construct, which is BONKERS and so delicious, narratively speaking. All that to say, I really wanted to convey that feeling of unreality, and I feel like the stark contrast between the two fonts really helps with that!

The title page was also super fun to design! After Viktor gets spat back out of the arcane, his face kinda splits into a thousand different after-images. I thought it would be really neat to convey that somehow, along with the general idea of motion as named in the title:

I liked the effect so much I did it for the cover text as well! This was my first time using printable canvas and gosh is it a game changer. For the cover artwork, I used Vasily Kandinsky's Several Circles and flipped it around so that that the title would fall in the black part of the big circle:

My bindery logo falling right in the middle of the orange circle was a happy accident heh, but it's one I'm quite pleased with :3 This was one of those designs that sort of fell into place the moment I found the artwork--it just felt right.

This was also my first time making paper endbands! I used the same paper for both the endbands and the endpapers and love how it brings it all together.

A million thanks again to rune for letting me bind their work, and to marie for letting me include her artwork! I had so much fun with this bind, and this is legit one of my favorite fics not just in arcane fandom, but also just in general. I'm so so happy to have it on my shelf! Here it is once more, for the road <3
