Japanese Ruikasa AU's: A Comprehensive (?) Guide

There are a lot of Rui/Tsukasa AU’s 類司 (派生/derivation or パロ/parody, or both sometimes) in the Japanese fandom, this is a showcase of almost all of them.

A note that the order of names in the ship matters a LOT in fandom spaces in the eastern side, you’ll often, if not always, find artists’ socials with 🎈🌟左右固定 or 🎈🌟🔄❌ in their bio or in their profile cards. All will be in Rui/Tsukasa order here. Listed in romanized alphabetical order.

Rui and Tsukasa need no introduction if you are already familiar with this game, but if you aren't, Rui and Tsukasa are characters from the rhythm game Project Sekai: Colorful Stage ft. Hatsune Miku (Brand New Your World). They’re from the Unit WonderlandsxShowtime, members of a freelance theater troupe with the goal of bringing smiles to the entire world with their performances. They’re also classmates and are often referred to by their classmates as the “Oddball 1, 2 Finish” (or “Weirdo Wombo Combo” as the official English localization goes) because they are a pair of show-passionate weirdos. They’ve also blown up a few things at their school more than once but that’s another story! We continue with the actual AU's!

DanToru・団トル

団長・トルペ Danchou/Torpe

From Rui and Tsukasa's gacha cards and play Wandasho made on Tsukasa's focus event On the Stage of Dazzling Light. In the event's play, Danchou (Rui) is a Band Leader (translation of Danchou) from an orchestra who saw potential in Torpe (Tsukasa), a pianist that had issues showcasing his piano skills in front of others.

One of the original AU's that I still see sometimes. Both of these come from outfits, Rui comes from April 2021 Mission Pass Men's Outfit titled “Elegant Pirates” and Tsukasa comes from 2021 Half-Anniversary Limited Outfit titled “Hummingbird”.

Another OG. Rui comes from a July 2021 Mission Pass Men's Outfit titled “Phantom Thief” and Tsukasa comes from his trained gacha card I'm the Leading Actor! from Mizuki's focus event KAMIKOU FESTIVAL!. He's called ‘Romeo’ because he plays the role of Romeo in a Romeo and Juliet inspired battle royale play. I've seen it called PhantomRomi on the western side like. once.

This is very specific. The names come from the characters Rui and Tsukasa play in their performance in At This Festival Tinged With Twilight's event. Rui plays the "Smiling Devil" and Tsukasa plays the "Elite Devil". Rui here is using the March 2023 Mission Pass Men's Outfit titled "Devil move heart" and Tsukasa uses November 2021 Mission Pass Men's Outfit titled “EVIL ONE” because I've seen them represented with both outfits. Mostly “EVIL ONE”.

I'm using Rui and Tsukasa's trained gacha cards on Tsukasa's focus event A Story Where You Are The Star, since this AU came from there. In the event's play, Nakayama (Tsukasa) is interpreted as a cynical and spiteful editor, Shirafuji (Rui) just works at a bookstore.

I can't find the fanart that started it all, but this one by HIA portrays the most used fanon rendition of them.

- you dont have to watch every season to understand it

- i recommend starting with hermitcraft season 8 (that’s the shortest so least intimidating to start + has a lot with them)

- mumbo isn’t in a lot of the latest season so if u want to get into stuff w/ him specifically go for season 7 or season 6 (grian only joined in season 6) (also id recommend season 7 most but your choice)

'Originally there was a section where Lloyd would follow you and you’d hide. I definitely want to do some stealth stuff where you have to hide under stuff I think that’d be a lot of fun.'

'He’s fully aware of everything around him but he’s programmed to behave a certain way. The best comparison would be GLaDOS or Wheatley from portal. Programmed to act a certain way, but also aware and able to see stuff around them and react.'

'We’re aiming chapter 2 to be just a little bit longer then chapter 1. We want each chapter to be a bit longer than before. I’d say for chapter 2, two and a half

'Lloyd’s cool and Lloyd will be important. That is all I can say.'

'All of the characters we make need a purpose. It’s layers of talking through stuff and ideas to get stuff we like. The designs for them aren’t done but the idea for them is there and i am in love with them.'

'No. We’re working on chapter 1 right now. Again we’re looking at a year and a half or two years until chapter 2 cuz I’m not gonna rush it or my team. We’ll have little animations stuff and between yeah we’re not gonna do anything with that.

“Update is bug fixes, trying to get controller support working,revamping some of the environments and I’m bringing on a new modeler for some of the monster designs. Not confirming but i think Finley is going to get a full on redesign for chapter 2.”

'To be honest with you, i think chapter 3 is where we’re going to start doing the crazy shit possible and then chapter 4 is planned to be the most bad ass chapter i could ever think of. The story gets moving chapter 4.'

Kira’s obsession with perfection extends to the child, and he secretly imagines raising them in his ideal, peaceful version of the world.

Diavolo/ Doppio (just pretend he didn’t try to kill his kid in canon lol)

Diavolo: His reaction is pure paranoia. “This must be a scheme… you’re trying to control me.”

He disappears for a while, grappling with the implications, but his possessiveness drags him back to you.

Once he accepts it, he becomes obsessive about keeping you hidden and protected, seeing the child as something that must remain secret.

Doppio: Doppio is stunned and nervous but enjoys the excuse to take care of you.

He immediately starts doting on you, talking to the baby even when you’re not showing yet.

Doppio tries to convince Diavolo that this is a good thing, leading to internal debates between the two.

Enrico Pucci

Pucci is shaken for a moment as he processes the news.

“This… must be part of God’s plan,” he murmurs, trying to rationalize it.

He becomes deeply introspective, questioning how this development fits into his divine mission.

Despite being your enemy, Pucci sees the child as a blessing and vows to protect you both.

He speaks to the unborn child as though guiding them toward a higher purpose.

Funny Valentine

Valentine’s composure cracks for a moment. “This is unexpected.”

He quickly regains his composure, seeing the child as a symbol of destiny and strength.

“Our child will be a beacon for this nation.”

Despite being enemies, he insists on ensuring your safety, offering you protection under his watchful eye.

Valentine becomes eerily calm and determined, treating the situation like a political and personal mission.

Now that the whole series has been released, I binge relistened to all of Once and Future. And wrote down all my thoughts, of course.

Definitely the series' main problem is something that affects a lot of Big Finish; it wants to have a story arc, but clearly the writers barely planned with each other or put any effort into that aspect. There's no flow or natural build-up to the finale, unlike what the premise and first episode might lead you to expect. Without much of a compelling arc, the only thing the series has to mark it as a special occasion is its many cameos and crossovers ...but in order to have more of those than the average Big Finish series, they had to pack so many in that most episodes struggle to handle it (in one way or another).

As a series, it unfortunately adds up to less than the sum of its parts.

With all that said, it's a series that I enjoyed a lot more during my relisten, since I could adjust my expectations. I forgot my desire for a grand or satisfying larger story, and just took each standalone episode on its own merits. There's a varying level of quality, but overall its not as disappointing as I remembered.

I decided to rank the episodes from my least to most favourite, and write a paragraph on each one.

8. Time Lord Immemorial I was told this was added to the series at the last minute, and I believe it; it features the imminent destruction of every universe thanks to the use of the degeneration gun, and this little fact is not mentioned at any point before or afterwards. The plot is about a dull and generic all-powerful Time Lord fairytale with an incredibly convenient rhyme to tell everyone what to do. Not that anyone actually does much of anything in this episode. It's mostly descriptions of some impressive visuals and the trading of some half-hearted banter. The only thing of any substance at all in the story is the slightly interesting (though not as interesting as it could've been) relationship between the Lumiat and the Doctor, which is okay if you like that, and unfortunate if you wanted Liv and the Unbound Doctor to have any focus at all.

7. Two's Company This episode is the poster child of being assigned a long and truly random laundry list of characters by the producers. All elements of the episode feel like they're thrown together haphazardly, from the total disregard of the previous episodes' plot hook onwards. But the friendship of Jackie and Lady Christina, two of the least likely characters to be teamed up with the sixth Doctor, is perhaps the highlight of the episode (even though Jackie is written rather stereotypically). On the other hand, Harry Sullivan doesn't really add anything, and the bizarre introduction of The Two borders on the insulting. Back when The Eleven was first introduced, the audio took pains to note that his mental illness was not the cause of his villainy. Later authors seemed to have missed this memo, and none fly in the face of it as much as Two's Company. On top of it all, I think Lisa McMullin is just an author I do not vibe with. She's the only one who wrote two episodes of this series, and they're my two least favourite.

6. The Union I'm not a big fan of finales written by Matt Fitton, which is bad news for me because he's been Big Finish's Go-To Finale Guy for over a decade now. He always makes the plot a bit too busy and never quite lands the emotional moments for me. Once and Future's climactic episode gets a lot of fanservicey moments (some that I can enjoy and some that feel like an obligation), but the story arc that the series had been stumbling and crawling towards concludes with the Doctor winning a nonsensical moral argument about how he's fine with being and meeting himself, something that isn't demonstrated in this anniversary special and is contradicted in most others. The villain/s are a bizarre choice and rather unthreatening- but at least River and Susan are fun to listen to.

5. A Genius For War It's slightly baffling that in the middle of a series that flaunts its random character line-ups is a fairly standard Time War episode, with characters you'd expect to see in it (except for the Seventh Doctor I guess, but he doesn't feel that out of place in a Davros story like this.) I refrained from calling it a "bog-standard" Time War episode, because it does actually put some effort into being relevant to this series specifically, and is a fun little action movie to while away an hour (and celebrate the Doctor's longest-running alien foes in all their mediocre glory). Still, the fact that this ep is just before halfway through my ranking means that I enjoy this series more often than not.

4. Past Lives This is a charming episode, largely due to its fun cast of characters. It takes its time with its story, being literally halfway done by the time all the characters have been brought into the plot together, but I'm not saying it's badly paced. I'm certainly fine with it just giving us the Doctor and the Monk for the first 15 minutes. But the moment of this episode that always sticks in my head the most is the Doctor and Sarah reacting to all the pictures of the Doctors in Osgood's house, having a little bit of an existential crisis about it. It's amazing how taking even just a small break from the action for some genuine emotion can add to a story. See number 1 on this list for more. Oh I do wish it did more with the King Arthur/Once and Future theme though, especially seeing as it was what gave the series its name.

3. The Martian Invasion of Planetoid 50 Michelle Gomez and David Tennant are so good together. I don't have an awful lot more to say about this one, it's just solid entertainment. It's got great characterisation and a lot of funny lines. The episode really understood the Master when it said "Only one Time Lord would ever do something so mind-bogglingly, time-consumingly ridiculous."

2. Coda—The Final Act The final episode is second only to Two's Company in how random and long its list of returning characters is, but it handles them with much more grace and a satisfying story. I mean I do wish that Vienna Salvatori had a bigger role, but that's just because I'm a fan of her series, she works fine narratively (and there was a Jexie reference to appease me). Really my biggest complaint about this one is that it doesn't quite commit to the Doctor vs Doctor premise as much as I wish it would, with it all being a contrived trick, but it doesn't do that badly, it's fine. Wait, maybe my biggest complaint is the title: why give it two? Why not just call it Coda? Anyway, Bernice was a great choice for this episode, she's always been great at speaking her mind to the Doctor. And it was easy for me to forget this this is Jo Martin's first audio because she sounded so at home. Great stuff.

1. The Artist at the End of Time This might not be the episode I go back to listen to the most, but I think it is the best made, with the most time to breathe and the most coherent themes. (And it also happens to be the episode with the least amount of returning characters heaped upon it. What a coincidence.) The degeneration giving the Doctor something of an existential crisis, compounded by the end of the universe and the presence of the Curator, gives the series some much needed time to reflect on a key aspect of the franchise for its anniversary; the Doctor themself. It certainly works a lot better than whatever The Union tried to do in its last 15 minutes. Aside from all that, Five and Jenny and the Curator are just a rather sweet team to listen to, with an interesting problem to investigate and a lot of witty dialogue.

He can also usually be found at Adam and Eve's house :3 Adam is a social worker and Chuuya's case worker and is also really suspicious of Verlaine (Verlaines chill dw Adam just doesn't rlly like him </3.) and Eve is a lawyer!! Ill draw them after I draw smth I don't hate 4 Rimlaine probably 😈

He's always arguing with Verlaine but is chill with Rimbaud (who usually has to be the peace maker when they fight) and even though he makes fun of them for their ghost channels he will defend them with his life from ppl at school. He leaves so many hate comments tho (Verlaine originally argued back on the official account and that's how he lost access to it ((so now he just uses his personal account))

What's your interpretation of the Sumi6 ending??? I know they're meant to portray a more unorthodox type of love, given their origins are rather unusual/lh, but I can't fully grasp why Habuko ate Sumire? Is it like the whole loving someone so much you'd want to canibalize (Habuko's not human but yk) your loved ones just so they'd be apart of you forever? Or eating her is like. Taking fate into his own hands? He could have destroyed his yoroshiro any other way but he chose eat her. Is there deeper meaning to be had

! TBHK CHAPTER 94 SPOILERS !

So we all know that hakubo only ‘’realised’’ his love for sumire when they were separated, after her death. And that since she’s his yoroshiro, she is the thing most important to him.

Here, he says ; « I could let you go again, but that wouldn’t change anything. If I cant forget you anyways.. » we then cut to where he starts eating her.

From what I understood the first time I read it, he wouldn’t be able to forget her, and If he just lets her go nothing would change. So what he said.

Why Is he eating her? Like you said, its basically the « loving someone so much you’d like them to be apart of you forever ».

(note that this isnt in the English translations. I first read the book in french since I live in france) — Also, as said by Nene to Sakura later in chapter 95

« was it because he didnt like that I would be the one to destroy Sumire’s seal? »

Im pretty sure I saw a translation that translated this line similarly to that, but I cant find it anymore 😭

Also PLEASE note that Sumire seems completely fine with that. Even calling him cute while he’s eating her. I’ve seen a lot of people saying that sumire didnt want that, or didnt like it.

You could also interpret it as him taking fate into his own hands, other than killing her, I dont think there were many ways to destroy her. So it was either killing her or eating her

I personally really love this ending! A lot of people just reduce it to Hakubo eating Sumire, which isnt wrong but I feel like those jokes are kind of annoying. Seeing them on almost every sumi6, Sumire or Hakubo post/picture is honestly tiring 😭

So basically, from my understanding, Hakubo wanted to be the one that could destroy Sumire’s seal. Loving her to the point of wanting to be together, forever. There’s not a lot to be said since pretty much everything is written in the chapter.

OKAY. IM AT THE "NAV AND SAPPH TALK" CHUNK OF THE TRANSCRIPT. and i IMMEDIATELY have to focus on this:

Sapphire: So you… know me. How. Navigator: I do— Of course I know you! Sapphire: Do you. Navigator: You don’t remember?

if this is the same Navigator from the Clocktower stream, why does Sapphire ask him how he knows them? why does Sapphire treat him as a stranger? after all, ze's perfectly familiar with who he is and their relationship with each other in Clocktower. that was not the first time they talked, and Navigator wanted it to be their last.

Sapphire: How do you know me? [...] Navigator: Come on now, sister, don’t be that way. [chuckles] You can see it in the eyes, can’t you? [ there’s an awkward pause. Sapphire glances away. ] Sapphire: So you— Navigator: Oh, wait, I forgot. The eyes look a little different when I’m… in this one. Hm.

this line could be taken a few ways, but all of them center on the fact that this Viking doesn't have green eyes normally. it's a side-effect of being in tViking's body.

and the thing is: Navigator is tRuby's* nickname for green-eyed Viking. we, and likely tRuby as well, assume that if tViking has green eyes, then he's being possessed by the same entity that star spoke to before.

(* i think tViking also says "Navigator" at one point later in this stream but ill get to that when i get there.)

tViking has been possessed before, when he built the bamboo farm in his "sleep", and it likely wasn't by Navigator. Nav isn't too keen on tViking's industrialization, and also thinks he's insane. and, sure, Nav is convinced that tViking doesn't know about the other Vikings, but he absolutely does. again, tViking namedrops Navigator later, but there's also the entire "Vikings help Viking" conversation.

look. something is wrong. things don't add up. the more i think about it, the more it stands out. whoever this Viking is, he lies omits the truth. whoever this Viking is, he's taking advantage of the uncertainty around Navigator's existence.

if he is Navigator, he's spent every interaction before now lying out his ass:

Ruby: How do I know you’re not a liar? Navigator: I’ve never lied before! That’s this one’s specialty, not mine though. [...] Ruby: So you- you lied to me. You lied— First of all, you lied about never having lied to me, because when we first met… You- you told me— Navigator: Well, I omitted the truth… Ruby: No, you kn— You said you didn’t know a lot about them, but it seems you guys go way back! Navigator: And you believed that? Considering how much I asked about them, you believed that? [laughs] Okay, well, maybe you aren’t that good at detecting lies. I’m not very good at them.

...which, okay, he did definitely dodge around things in his very first conversation with tRuby:

Navigator: <Sapphire scares us more than we want to admit. we know nothing> Ruby: “Sapphire scares us more than we want to admit. We know nothing.” How— …Okay. Great, so I scare him, that’s awesome, that’s great. Navigator: <they are an unknown. and we do not like not knowing>

but the most important part here is that he would have been lying to Sapphire. he doesn't need to pretend around Sapphire like he has to around tRuby! if he's such a bad liar, if he only ever omits the truth, then why does he talk to Sapphire like this during Clocktower:

Navigator: How is it gonna be different this time. Sapphire: You feel it, right? They’re different, this time. Both of them. Navigator: Yeah! Yeah, for starters, this one didn’t exist. Sapphire: Chyea! I know. We didn’t exist. You’ve told me before.

Navigator: [pause] You won’t tell me anything. And none of the others seem to know… or know even he exists. So that- that- That’s not the point, though! Why did you wanna talk to me. Sapphire: Well. First of all. I haven’t seen you in so long. So many tries you’ve tried to avoid me. But… why did you reach out to this Ruby. Tell me.

Sapphire: We’ve been much worse. We’re not supposed to be here! Navigator: No! No I’m not! Sapphire: You know where we’re supposed to be? You know where we’re supposed to be? Navigator: Why did you— No!

you can see the difference, right? there's no defensive hostility on Sapphire's side. there's no questioning, because she knows who Navigator is. she knows what he's about, how he knows her, and what she's focused on is "why are you here this time after spending so long dodging me".
