Dreamer In Disguise

“I-I made you cookies!”

A platter of lumpy, cinnamon-sprinkled cookies covered in a thin plastic wrapping was held up to Anne. She glanced at them, then at the nervous, but excited girl offering them to her. She smiled and took one.

“Thank you, Joan.” She said. She took a bite and Joan clenched her fingers around the plate expectantly.

The cookies were a tad too salty and a little hard, but good nonetheless.

“These are really good!” Anne said and Joan sighed in relief.

“Thank you, Miss Anne,” She said, cracking a small smile. “I-I have to go find Miss Cathy and Miss Aragon and give them some!”

Anne shook her head fondly as Joan scampered off. The cookies really did help with the hour of warmups with Aragon and then rehearsals. It was so good to see Joan opening a little bit more.

But that all ended when the workday came to a close and Anne and Cathy walked out into the theater lobby to leave to find Joan slumped against the wall, hugging her knees.

“Joan?” Anne said as they hurried over to her. “What’s wrong?”

“Oh. H-hi.” Joan croaked. “I-I missed my bus...”

“Ah,” Anne nodded. “Well, why don’t you call your mum to pick you up?”

“I tried,” Joan said. “She’s in one of her...moods.” She hugged her knees tighter. “I-I don’t wanna go home when she’s like that, anyway...”

Anne and Cathy exchanged worried frowns. Cathy crouched down next to Joan and set a hand on her shoulder.

“Why don’t you come to stay with us for the night?” She offered.

Joan’s eyes went wide. ��R-really?” She looked up at Anne, who smiled at her. “Like...like a sleepover?”

“Yeah!” Cathy nodded. “Like a sleepover!”

“I-I’ve never had a sleepover before,” Joan said wistfully. “C-can I really?”

“Of course,” Cathy said. “Come on. Up with you!”

She got Joan to her feet and they all walked out to the car. Joan was quiet for most of the ride, just listening to the radio she had never heard pop music before. Though, Anne nor Cathy wouldn’t be surprised if her mother only let her listen to church songs and gospel music.

It wasn’t until they parked in the apartment complex parking lot that Anne and Cathy realized how strange what they were doing was. They were bringing home a sixteen-year-old girl they had no relation to at all. If it were anyone else, like Kitty or Maggie, they might have been a little uneasy, but Joan...

With Joan, it just felt right.

“Welcome to our humble abode,” Anne said grandly, unlocking and opening the front door. Cathy walked in first, followed by Joan. Anne locked the door behind them after stepping inside.

“Make yourself at home!” Cathy said as she was turning on the lights.

Joan looked around the apartment, curiosity glinting in her eyes. When she was done examining every inch of the living room, dining room, and kitchen, she hooked her bag on one of the dining table chairs and walked over to Anne and Cathy. They both noticed that she kept glancing over at the dining room the most- was she looking for something?

“Joan?” Anne said.

“S-sorry.” Joan stammered. She reached up to instinctively mess with her necklace, but Anne caught her hand and held it in her own, stroking the knuckles with her thumb.

“It’s alright, sweetheart,” Anne assured her. “We were just about to order something to eat. Do you like pizza?”

“I’ve only had it a few times,” Joan admitted shyly. “Back when I was still in school. Sometimes they did these pizza parties. But, umm. Yeah, I like it.”

“Any particular kind?” Cathy asked. She looked up from her laptop, where she was already on some pizza shop’s website.

“Cheese?” Joan said and Cathy nodded and smiled.

“You don’t go to school anymore?” Anne asked.

“Oh.” Joan looked a little awkward. “I-I’m homeschooled. Actual school—it wasn’t working out.”

Anne frowned slightly. “How come?”

Joan glanced up at her for a moment, then back to the dining room, and then focused her gaze back on the tile floor. She worried her hands in her shirt.

“Kids—were mean. To me.” She said in a tight voice. “Th-they called me names. Like ‘Maggot Meutas.’ And would write things on my desk. Mean things...”

“Oh, Joan...” Anne hugged Joan gently and she hugged back. Anne can feel her nuzzle her face against her chest. Cathy looked up from her computer to frown sadly at the girl. “That’s so terrible. I’m so sorry you had to go through that.”

Joan shrugged casually. “It’s—fine.”

But it isn’t. Anne thought. Not in any way. And certainly not to her. She studied the girl hugging onto her. She’s embarrassed about admitting her treatment because she thinks she deserved it and is also humiliated by it, but she wants to be comforted. She wants people to feel bad for her so they’ll finally take care of her. Because nobody ever does.

“Stop reading people, Annie.” Cathy chided playfully, not looking up from her computer. Anne ruffled and stuck her tongue out at the smirk her girlfriend was giving the screen.

“Wh-what?” Joan looked up at Anne with a confused expression.

“Nothing, sweet girl,” Anne said dismissively, stroking down a few locks of wild blonde hair on Joan’s head.

“D-did I do something?” Joan asked nervously. “I’m sorry...”

“No, no,” Anne said. “You’re being absolutely wonderful, Joan. You have done nothing wrong, I promise.”

Joan hesitated for just a moment, then nodded. She didn’t seem entirely convinced and that was making her glance more and more at the dining room.

What is it? What are you scared of? Anne so desperately wanted to ask. What do I need to protect you from?

A ringtone then went off. Joan jolted and scrambled to take her phone out of her back pocket. It was an iPhone 5, Anne noticed. Joan must have had it for a long time since Anne was pretty sure those models weren’t made or even sold anymore.

“Hello?” Joan said into the phone. She begrudgingly pulled herself away from Anne, stepped into the dining room, and then immediately went to the living room when she cast an anxious glance up at the ceiling above the table. “Mama?”

Anne really hadn’t been wanting to snoop, but not she had to. Besides, Cathy was definitely listening in, anyway.

“I told you, mama, I missed my bus.” Pause. “I-it was an accident!” Pause. “N-no, I’m safe. I’m staying with some friends.” Pause. Joan wrinkled her nose a little. “Yes, mama. Friends. Their names are Cathy and Anne. They’re—” She glanced over at the pair and they tried to look like they weren’t eavesdropping. “—sisters.”

Anne couldn’t help but make a face at that, but then instantly knew why such an excuse was needed. If Joan’s mother seemed as crazy religious as Joan made her out to be then she definitely wouldn’t approve of homosexuality and her daughter staying with two lesbians. She glanced at Cathy and saw that she was giving Joan a sympathetic look.

That made Anne think—what if Joan ended up being gay? Or bi? Or ace? Or anything but heterosexual? Cathy’s parents were very accepting of her sexuality and absolutely adored Anne, while Anne had the misfortune of having parents that were “okay with it as long as she never brought it up”. Not the worst treatment, but definitely irritating when she had been younger. But she couldn’t even begin to imagine how Joan would be treated by her mother if she turned out to be LGBTQ+ in some way. She didn’t want to think about what would happen to her.

“No, no, mama,” Joan had been saying when Anne finally tore her thoughts away from Joan being killed or brainwashed into being heterosexual by a church, “I’m okay, I’m okay, I promise. Cathy and Anne are really nice, I’m telling you!” Pause. She went very rigid. “Wh-what?” Pause. “O-okay.” She turned to Anne and Cathy and stammered, “Sh-she wants to talk to one of you.”

Cathy stepped up before Anne could even really process what had been said and took the phone, saying, “Hello” in her best please-don’t-think-I-kidnapped-your-daughter voice.

Joan scampered over to Anne and went straight into her arms. Anne was slightly shocked at how she willingly went into the hug but pleased nonetheless. She was thrilled to know Joan trusted her enough to cling to her in such a way.

“There there,” Anne murmured, stroking Joan’s hair. “It’s going to be okay, sweetheart. It’s going to be okay.”

“I-I’m sorry, M-Miss Anne,” Joan whimpered. “I-I know you and Cathy a-aren’t sisters—”

“Joan, it’s okay.” Anne assured her. “I understand. Trust me, before I told my parents Cathy and I were dating I would say she was my ‘Latin tutor’.”

“B-but you’re allowed to kiss your Latin tutor,” Joan pointed out. “Not your sister...”

Anne chuckled, filling with endearment. “Well, it’s a good thing she isn’t my sister then, huh?”

“Yeah,” Joan nodded slightly. She rested her head on Anne’s chest, taking a deep breath. “S-sorry—for freaking out.”

“No need to apologize,” Anne said. “You’re all good!”

Joan nodded again. She kept her head on Anne’s chest until Cathy walked back over and gave her back her phone. She said goodbye to her mother and told her she loved her before hanging up.

“I bet she’s great at parties,” Cathy chuckled, making Joan blush shyly. “I smoothed things over, Joan. Don’t worry. She said you can stay here.”

Joan breathed out a sigh of relief. “I’m glad. I-I was really scared for a minute that she would...” She shook her head. “I’m glad I can stay.”

She would what? Anne asked in her head. What does she do to you?

“Us too,” Cathy said with a grin. “Because I don’t think Anne and I can eat all I pizza I ordered by ourselves.”

“How much did you buy?!” Anne asked, whipping her head around to her girlfriend. At the same time, she heard Joan giggle softly- actually giggle- and it was the sweetest, most adorable sound she’s ever heard before.

“Not that much!” Cathy said. “I was joking!”

Joan giggled again and Cathy and Anne beamed at her. But then they both frowned in worry when she suddenly gasped in pain and her arms coiled tightly around her stomach.

“Joan?” Anne steadied her when she began to wobble. “What’s wrong?”

“I-it hurts,” Joan whispered fearfully. “M-Miss Anne, it hurts! Wh-what’s g-going on?! Why d-does it hurt?!”

Oh dear. Anne thought.

Joan really didn’t know anything about menstruation. She was working herself up into a proper panic attack, whimpering and squeezing her stomach tighter.

“Hey, hey,” Anne guided her to look at her. “It’s okay. It’s okay. You’re okay.”

“No, no-” Joan shook her head. “I-it hurts!”

“I know it hurts, sweetheart.” Anne said.

“You’re having cramps.” Cathy told her. “I’ll get a hot water bottle and some Ibuprofen.” She quickly went to go bustle through the cabinets.

“C-cramps?” Joan echoed nervously. “L-like a stomachache?”

“Sorta.” Anne said. “But it’s down in this region,” She gestured towards Joan’s lower stomach. “Does it hurt bad?”

Joan nodded with a whimper. “Really bad.” She whispered. “L-like I’m gonna be sick...”

“Do you think you are?” Anne asked. “We can go to the bathroom.”

“I-I don’t wanna throw up,” Joan said miserably.

“I know you don’t,” Anne said, brushing back a loose strand of hair from Joan’s pale face. “Why don’t we just sit down on the couch? Does that sound better?”

Joan nodded and Anne guided her over to the couch. She curled against her side, hugging tighter at her cramping stomach and squeezing her eyes shut.

“Shh, shh,” Anne murmured when Joan whimpered. She began to rub her back comfortingly. “You’re okay, baby girl. You’re okay.”

“Wh-what’s happening to me?” Joan asked fearfully. “I-is it the devil?”

Anne almost laughed, but then she saw that Joan was being completely serious and that the thought of the devil being inside of her was genuinely freaking her out. She shook her head.

“No, Joan,” She said. “It’s not the devil. This is a completely normal thing. All girls go through it.”

“Th-that’s what Miss Aragon said,” Joan said. “Does she bleed, too? And have cramps?”

Anne couldn’t bite back a laugh this time. “I’m sure she does, honey. It’s not really a thing you ask other women, though.”

“Oh.” Joan blushed, and then asked anyway, “But—you. Even you? And Cathy?”

“Yes,” Anne nodded. “And Jane and Maggie and Kitty and every other girl in the show. Although, Kitty’s came when she was twelve.” She tilted her head at Joan. “Yours was super late. What a peculiar little thing you are.”

“It’s because I sinned...”

Anne gave another startled laugh. “What?”

“I sinned.” Joan said, looking up at her. Her shimmering silver eyes were so obliviousness and unknowing to so many things. “M-my mama said that the blood is a curse—from God. And I sinned when I was showering with all those ladies two days ago. A-and I had lustful thoughts about them...” She looked back down, ashamed of herself.

“Did you?” Anne asked.

“I don’t think so,” Joan said. “I-I mean—they’re all very pretty, but I don’t want to— I wasn’t—”

“Hey, hey. Breathe, baby.” Anne murmured, noticing that Joan was getting distressed again. “I believe you when you said you didn’t.”

Joan nodded. She shifted closer to Anne and then winced when another cramp seemed to seize her in a vice grip. She whimpered into Anne’s shirt.

Cathy walked back over holding two pills of Ibuprofen and a glass of water in one hand and a hot water bottle in the other. She gave the hot water bottle to Joan.

“Hold that to your tummy, sweetheart,” Cathy told her. “And take these. They’ll help you feel better.”

Joan obeyed, swallowing down the pills and then holding the fuzzy hot water bottle close to her lower stomach. She rested her head against Anne’s arm, looking utterly miserable.

“Joan,” Cathy said, sitting on the other side of the girl. “Do you know anything about what’s happening to you?”

Joan shook her head. “No... Why does it happen? Am I just bleeding for fun?”

Anne laughed and rubbed her head. Cathy smiled a little at her innocence.

“I didn’t think we would be giving THIS talk today, Cath,” Anne said jokingly.

“Well, we have talked about adopting,” Cathy said. “This is like a rehearsal!”

Adopting, Anne remembered giddily. Adopting... She looked longingly down at the girl curled up against her.

“Okay, so,” Cathy began with a clap of her hands. “Joan— Wait. When did you get pulled out of school?”

“Last year.” Joan said.

“So you would have had biology classes, didn’t you? Or those SexEd courses?”

“Oh, no,” Joan shook her head. “My mama always made me opt out about that stuff.”

“Well, that explains a lot,” Cathy said, then noticed the guilty look on Joan’s face. “No, no, sweetheart, it’s not your fault! I knew a girl who didn’t take the course one time.”

But not every single time. Anne thought.

“Okay, so this may sound a little strange and it’s totally okay to be weirded out by it.” Cathy told Joan. “I was grossed out when I first heard about it, too. Basically your uterus is shedding its lining and it’s passing through your vagina and out of your body. This means that, technically, your body is capable of carrying and delivering a baby now. Every month, your uterus lines itself and waits a while. If at the end of the cycle, the egg cell prepared isn’t fertilized and embedded in the lining of the uterus, it sheds the lining to prepare a new one. Basically, your body finds out that you’re not pregnant, and cleans out everything to get it all ready and fresh again, just in case you get pregnant the next month around.”

Surprisingly, Joan didn’t look grossed out at all, just very, VERY confused. She looked up like she was deep in thought, trying to process all of that, and then finally said, “That’s weird. I could have babies now?” Her nose wrinkled at the thought.

“It’s possible, yes, but not at all a good idea.” Cathy said. “Your body might have a menstrual cycle now, but you’re not nearly mentally or physically ready to have kids yet.” She smiled slightly, glad that Joan was taking all the new information well.

Joan relaxed and nodded. “How do people get pregnant, then? You said the egg has to embed in the uterus, right? How does it know to do that?”

“Well, women have egg cells that contain half the DNA and chromosomes needed to make another human. These samples of DNA all come from you. That’s how children get to look so much like their parents. Men, then, have sperm cells that contain the other half of the DNA and chromosomes needed. The sperm fertilizes the egg and then pushes it up into the uterus. Once the fertilized egg is embedded in the uterus, that’s conception, and the woman is pregnant. This generally happens as a result of sexual intercourse.” Cathy replied to her easily and Anne gave her an amused look at how she explained this so smoothly. She would have to tease her over it when they were alone.

Joan nodded again, this time a little more knowing. “I know what that is.” She said.

Cathy raised an eyebrow, surprised. “Really?”

“Mhm,” Joan said. “My mama told me about it. And warned me to never EVER do it. Not even after I get married, but the Bible says it’s okay once you’re wed!” She paused. “Are you guys married? Do YOU—”

“That’s a conversation for another time!” Anne yelled, covering Joan’s mouth and the girl dissolved into adorable giggles. Cathy gave her a look that basically said, “Another time?”

“How do the babies get each trait from their parents? I mean, if a baby gets half it’s DNA from its mum and half from its dad, why do I look like my mama but she always says I have my papa’s eyes?”

“That’s a great question!” Cathy said and Anne laughed softly. “Some genes that are passed down are dominant and some are recessive. Your mother’s genes must have won out over most of your traits and was passed along to you, but your father’s eyes were dominant over hers.”

Joan took all this information in with surprising fascination. “How long do periods usually last?” She asked.

“On average, they last between three to seven days and happen once a month.” Cathy answered.

“I might bleed for seven days straight?”

“There’s a possibility, yes.”

Joan wrinkled her nose in an adorably grumpy way. “I don’t like that.”

“Trust me, no woman does.” Cathy laughed. She perked up when the doorbell rang. “Oh! Food’s here!” She got up to go answer the door.

“Better now?” Anne asked.

“I think so,” Joan nodded. “It is weird.”

Anne laughed and stroked her hair. “Yes, yes it is.”

“Come on, you two!” Cathy called from the kitchen. “Before I eat it all!”

“Oi! Don’t you dare!” Anne barked. She hauled Joan to her feet. “Come on! You heard the glutton!”

“A daughter,” Cathy said.

“Huh?” Anne turned away from the movie they had all been watching after dinner to look at her girlfriend.

“A daughter,” Cathy said again, smiling softly down at the girl asleep with her head in her lap. “I want a daughter.”

“Me too.” Anne grinned back at her. “A boy would be way too hard to manage.”

“Yeah,” Cathy laughed. “But also...there’s just something that draws me to a little girl.”

“You are a lesbian,” Anne pointed out. “You do prefer girls.”

“Really?” Cathy said. “I had no idea!”

“You dork,” Anne nudged her playfully. “Keep your voice down you might wake her up.” She smiled lovingly down at Joan, who had fallen asleep with her head in Cathy’s lap halfway through the movie. “I told you Brave was boring.”

“It is not!” Cathy ruffled. “It is a cinematic masterpiece!”

Joan stirred in her sleep. Cathy immediately quieted down and stroked Joan’s hair.

“Shh, shh, go back to sleep,” She murmured when she saw Joan’s eyelids flutter slightly. “I didn’t mean to yell. I’m sorry.”

Joan calmed with a content sleepy noise.

“Good job.” Anne tittered.

“Hush up.” Cathy elbowed her lightly. “I will not make that mistake when we get a little girl of our own.”

“Well,” Anne mused, “when you think about it, we kinda already have one.” She happily looked down at Joan again. Cathy sighed.

“Annie...” Cathy said. “She has a mother. We can’t-”

“We can!” Anne said. “Her mother clearly isn’t good to her. We can arrest her for child abuse! And then adopt Joan!”

Cathy shook her head, but didn’t comment.

“I know what you’re thinking, Cath,” Anne said. “But there’s something special about her. I don’t know what it is, but I— I want her in my life. In OUR life.”

Cathy looked at her, then at Joan, and gently began to thread her fingers through her hair.

“Well,” She said. “I wouldn’t have to give the period talk all over again...”

Not something funny but something VERY IMPORTANT. AH admitting that they all fucked up and how shitty their behavior was when dealing with harassment in the fanbase. People were racist, sexist, homophobic, misogynistic, and just downright horrible to a lot of the employees at RT and AH. This came up after Mica Burton left the company and talked about it publicly and how nothing was done about it. Fiona who also experiences these same things, along with Lindsay and other employees, but Fiona took the charge on the Off Topic talking about people can’t continue to get away with that behavior. She got to sound off her feelings to a group of white men who all respected her and LISTENED to what was saying and how she felt. She cried; Geoff cried. They all want to do more, so this doesn’t happen in the future and they’re not tolerating the racist and horrible comments. AH taking a mature moment to talk about how they failed to stop these comments and Geoff was right when he said the company has a long way to go.

Outside of AH each member has more to them than just all of the comedy and laughs and dumb shit they do

Geoff helped found Roosterteeth and Achievement Hunter. He has a beautiful daughter in Millie who is awesome in her own right. He’s a recovering alcoholic. Currently doing F**k Face podcasts. Was in the fucking army. Takes accountability for every mistake he makes.

Jack also helped start Achievement Hunter. He does so much work for charity. His twitter is full of things to help people go vote. He’s like the dad to AH, especially Fiona. He’s happily married to his wife Caiti.

Michael was an electrician and has a lot of handy man experience. He made a few videos online about him raging at games and that got the attention of RT. He’s currently married to Lindsay who he met because of RT. They have two kids together.

Gavin is an expert at high speed filmmaking and know how use and edit footage from a slow-motion camera. He has worked on actual films. One of the creators of the Slow Mo Guys. Worked his ass off to get to work for RT. Currently dating model and cosplayer Meg Turney

Lindsay flips between being the mom of the group and a complete chaos queen and we all love her for it. She started as an editor for the RT podcast and then AH stuff. She is an incredible voice actor, most known for Ruby Rose (RWBY), Space Kid (Camp Camp), Hilda (Xray & Vav) just to name a few. She also has a degree in finance

Jeremy started as a fan who made videos on the community page. He took over Ray’s place after Ray left to do Twitch full time. He is a self-published author and a skilled rapper and singer. He’s currently married to his wife, Kat.

Matt also started as a fan making videos on the community page. He actually interacted and made stuff for the guys in really early Minecraft episodes. Seriously this guy is like king of Minecraft. He has a degree in electrical engineering. He also has pretty decent singing voice.

Trevor is THE BOSS. Has a degree in aero-space engineering and is getting paid to babysit AH. Currently dating Barbara Dunkelman, RTs queen of puns.

Alfredo worked at IGN before RT and is a well-known streamer. He is the best when it comes to first person shooter games. He and Trevor look so similar.

Fiona. Po. Her majesty. Host of This Just Internet. A Twitch streamer. Baby of the bunch. Grew up in Europe. Her and Gav act like a pair of siblings. She has stated and showed time and time again she will fight for people to have safe spaces for anyone who needs them.

Ify, our new guy. He is wonderful and I want to stay forever. He’s a comedian, a writer, and an actor. Co hosts F-ing Around with Fiona. Has his own film podcast, Who Shot Ya? I look forward to more content with him in it, cause everything he’s been in so far has been great.

Were all hurting but well make it through this

We have all these wonderful moments and a lot more that I didn’t list and this incredible team of personalities with their own accomplishments and achievements. Not to mention old team members who were also great additions and the entire crew behind the scenes editing and making videos look the best that they can.

Here’s to Achievement Hunter and to this community. We need to be here for each other in times like these.

I, a campaign manager

so in addition to being a CTO, a CS major, and a dorm vice president, i was also a campaign manager for 2 weeks (the exact campaign that I was managing is not entirely difficult to figure out if you really want to know, especially if you click on the links BUT i will be trying to not mention it specifically here lol). You might be wondering - (1) why and (2) how did you end up becoming a campaign manager..... you're not even a poli sci/gov/humanities/literally anything vaguely related to this major??

You're correct, yes, how did this happen? Well that's a great place to start this story:

How in the world this happened

Friends drag you into stuff. This happens to be the same friend that dragged me to New York, and then was 20% of the reason I got dragged into the negotiation class, and then was maybe 15% of the reason i got dragged into nonprofit activities? In terms of providing unique opportunities in my life, she definitely takes the cake. So one day, she says "I'm running for this position," and me and the squad says "we gotchu." What does that mean? Clearly wasn't sure in the beginning, but we were texting campaign strategies and slogans and tiktok ideas in the chat for fun. None of us had any real responsibilities, especially since the actual candidates were still weighing the playing field and figuring out their platform.

I also was a course 6, so I guess there was some expectation that I would make the website, even though I didn't actually code the website from scratch.

but anyways, it was actual campaign time.

CAMPAIGN SZN

After they figured out the campaign platform, it was game on for the campaign materials. We spent a lot of time on artwork, we photoshopped pictures from a photo shoot, we came up with campaign motto ideas, we brainstormed strategies for officially announcing the campaign. We had an actual campaign meeting to talk over things in mid-April where I met like six different people, friends from both candidates on this ticket, who were supporting this effort. We had a google drive AND a Dropbox. Look at this:

Despite this seemingly organized effort, it was not that organized because this publicity team didn't actually actively do anything for like a week. Many reasons for this: one being it was actually the semester, and it was also CPW weekend. Unfortunately for me, that weekend was literally hell for me, because I was managing this site for our nonprofit, CPW events (so like five zoom calls on a Saturday), classes (because those are still happening), and then the campaign thing finally started, about a week before voting opened. In the form, of a website.

So the tl;dr is I developed an entire Squarespace website in one night. Yes, one night. I had to model it from I think the website from a Harvard campaign site, which took me like three or four hours on a Saturday night, which is a very fast time in my opinion to learn how to use Squarespace. I also bought a domain and figured out how to connect it to Squarespace at like 1 in the morning, which was the first domain I ever bought in my life!

(It expires in a month. I am absolutely going to let it die.)

Also, if anyone from squarespace is reading this for some reason, yall made a really solid product. I actually was very happy with my experience. You all should use it, I am 100% not sponsored by them at all, but honestly it was a very good experience. If you need to develop a website in four hours and don't have a lot of webdev experience, definitely consider it. You can even see website clicks and user analytics, it's actually really put together.

The next day we spend a lot of time going through website changes and artwork changes. It's bad. We had so many discussions about color palettes and the advantages of a 3 column vs 4 column layout. Yes. I'm serious. I'm starting to go crazy.

If anyone's interested, I would say that our website definitely was better than the other campaign's website. Like objectively. Like both campaigns were great, but the website? well. Here's the link (archived because I only paid for 1 month of squarespace :D) The amount of detail that went into it is actually incredible, the amount of spacing, i even had to custom CSS the header image so that mobile headers would show up correctly.

THE CAMPAIGN VIDEO

so sometime during this week, I had this thought about making a really good campaign video. I was very inspired by some of these Google ads that started with a Google search bar. (Yes, I am aware that I am that much of a Google simp.) To be honest, rewatching this ad, I really definitely just copied this entire ad lol, it's ok we don't have to talk about that.

That Wednesday, we coincidentally talked about what makes campaign videos successful. We talked about how Trump's incendiary imagery helped stoke the flames and how it was really effective in getting people to vote, and eventually helped him beat Clinton in the presidential election. So I went and took that and grabbed news clips and campus videos and overlayed that in the video, and it went from like a solid 6 to an 8 immediately, in my honest, unbiased opinion. You can see what I mean in the video itself: [link].

We also had to put together quite a few interviews about what they wanted from the school and were looking for in their candidates, which took a million years of coordination, but we somehow got it done in three days, and everything was put together in a flurry of a weekend, unending changes and small fixes for sixteen hours straight. I could not even tell you how much I learned about premiere pro and how to use layer masks and everything. I even composed the music for the first fifteen seconds of it. Literally, composed, it.

And so on a Sunday afternoon FINALLY right before voting, the video drops. I'm sitting in my backyard absorbing the sun because I hadn't left my computer for 48 hours straight.

It gets like 1000 views or impressions or something in like two days, which is incredible for me, since I'm not a professional by any standards, but I am considering being a professional campaign manager at this point. By the way, we're also managing an Instagram page, a Facebook page, a tiktok page, a website, our individual social media pages, and we're trying to synchronize this video drop and all of our publicity efforts across every single one of these channels. It's chaotic at best.

VOTING SZN

So it's voting week, where we give everyone an entire week to vote. Across the week, it's mostly a waiting game, we make a few more tiktoks and funny videos that we publicize to get out the vote more. The last day, we're thinking about it, and we know the final vote's gonna be close, so we message every. single. person. in our Facebook friends list. I think I singlehandedly convinced like twenty people to vote (and hopefully vote for our ticket).

There's a lot of drama about different stuff. I won't really talk about it because I think it got really messy, but this week and entire couple weeks was a lot to get through honestly. As a reminder, I'm also working on my senior thesis and my nonprofit website work is peaking at this point, so everything is very, very bad and none of us have slept in a while. Also it's the pandemic.

Finally, the results come out. We lost by like 20 votes or something, out of 1500 or so total votes casted or something like that. It's one of the highest voter turnouts in school history or something, I don't quite remember. After that, we're so emotionally drained from this whole thing that we just don't talk about it for a while and that's that.

If the ticket won, I wonder how it would've turned out. I feel like things would've continued to be busy, and maybe that's not a great thing. So maybe everything happened for a reason. I don't know, but those three weeks were quite interesting, quite fun, quite odd. I'm putting those videos in my personal portfolio and am putting Adobe Premiere Pro and Squarespace on my resume and moving on.

Anyways, thought I'd just share! i haven't posted in a while, and this was definitely one of my #weird #odd stories from my time at MIT, which is quite reminiscent of #weird #odd at MIT in general.

In 2016, Trump retweeted an image negatively comparing the looks of his wife Melania Trump, a former fashion model, and Heidi Cruz, the wife of then-primary rival, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas.

Cruz went on offense, defending his wife: "Donald, real men don't attack women. Your wife is lovely, and Heidi is the love of my life."

So what is it with Trump and blood anyway? He directed these offensive comments toward MSNBC anchor and "Morning Joe" co-host Mika Brezinski. As The New York Times reported:

"The president described Ms. Brzezinski as "low I.Q. Crazy Mika" and claimed in a series of Twitter posts that she had been "bleeding badly from a face-lift" during a social gathering at Mr. Trump's resort in Florida around New Year's Eve. The White House did not explain what had prompted the outburst, but a spokeswoman said Ms. Brzezinski deserved a rebuke because of her show's harsh stance on Mr. Trump."

YES - they really did go with the "she was asking for it" defense.

Trump has said some pretty terrible things about women during his 71 years of wandering this Earth. But these remarks to a former "Access Hollywood" host might be the sine qua non to understanding his attitude.

'Some, I assume, are good people.'

The racist gaffe heard 'round the world: Trump said of Mexico.

"They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."

These are quotes and tweets this man who is supposedly running our country has said. How great have we've become in these last 4 years? Were we having more racial unrest than ever? When black men are being hung once again? When he stirs the pot by saying "Stand by and stand tall"

When he calls people who are not like him names, when he belittle and demeans women? When he is trying to divide us instead of bringing us together?

This man is out for himself and his "white friends" he doesn't care about anyone but himself. He literally wants us to go back into the 50's where blacks had no rights, women had no choice and the LGBT community were in the closet. Instead of moving us forward, he is moving us backwards.

So today my friends, remember all of this when you vote but more importantly remember this if you are not voting, if you think your vote doesn't count, if you are undecided, this is what you are voting for. This is the character of the man who wants to run our country for four more years.

This vote is literally depending on you, it is your life. Your vote affects the women in your lives choice, if you're black or of color this could mean life or death for you and your loved ones. If you are LGBT or know someone that is this is a vote to keep them free and living how they want to.

Please, please... I am begging you to vote as if your life depends on it because it does.

Jumping off from the "prog het" post, I would solicit your opinion: I've been involved in fandoms where if a ship wasn't "gay" enough, it was written off, with the consequence of usually completely erasing bi characters/bi fans and their experiences as well as actively alienating straight fans. It also tends to be an age thing, with older fans embracing bi characters, or characters of any sexuality, and younger fans being upset if something isn't "gay" enough, (cont)

(cont) and then charmingly telling older fans they don’t belong in fan spaces and should go pay their taxes; especially cute if it’s for a fandom the older fans actually grew up with. Did the concept of “prog het” merely swing the other way, where only “sufficiently gay” content is “valid?” I also often see a lot of the same bad actors involved in “anti” wank.

I did not observe that one happening in the wild, but can venture a few guesses.

My training in mental health taught me to focus on the process, not the content. Which is to say: To look at patterns of whether people are impulsive or thoughtful, tolerant or judgmental, empathetic or merciless, balanced or polarized. To see if they’re able to build identities and relationships that slowly change as they learn and grow, or if those identities alternate between extreme rigidity and absolute breakdown. That’s far, far more important than what they’re concerned about.

Because yeah, if someone has the tendency to hold a really strict dogmatic belief, and to judge people on how well they conform to that ideal, and to flip out and cut ties with anyone who begins to question them, they are way more likely to just switch dogmatic beliefs, than to learn how to be okay with ambiguity and not-knowing and people who aren’t on the same page. When they’re presented with unequivocal proof that their old set of ideas doesn’t work, they can just jump to, “Okay, this OTHER set of extremely rigid beliefs will be Much Better!”

Partly because distress tolerance and comfort with ambiguity and telling people what you want and need and are okay with, without being aggressive or abusive, are all really complicated skills that need to be modelled for you; they’re incredibly hard for someone who doesn’t have them to just intuit them out of thin air, and then deal with the really painful process of practicing and fine-tuning them enough to make them useful in day-to-day life.

And age is partly to do with it. These are skills that humans aren’t really equipped to start mastering until we’re teenagers, and they don’t really solidify for most people until their early-to-mid twenties. So it is in fact REALLY NORMAL for teenagers to go through periods of being super rigid and extreme, and to flip back and forth between different positions and concerns as part of their development, and not to have developed the ability to predict other peoples’ reactions or future consequences enough to understand the effect they’re having on other people.. The best thing for them is honestly contact with grounded adults who can say, “Huh, that’s an interesting opinion. I’m not sure I agree with all of it, but I’d be interested to hear how you got there,” and, “I don’t care how problematic she is, you can’t be viciously mean to your friend.”

Which, you know, in a PERFECT WORLD, they would have. They’d have teachers and professors and mentors and group norms and, who knows, website moderators, to help the discussion from getting too overwrought and out of hand. But on the Wild West that is Tumblr, that does not happen, and every mood swing and black-and-white mindset gets amplified to an incredible degree.

So yeah, I 100% believe that a lot of the people who fed into “prog het” before this have just 180′d themselves into a different faction of the fandom purity police.

Thoughts on Steven Universe Future 3/28/2020

I wanted to write this last night, but there was just so much information to go through.

Spoilers Ahead

Homeworld Bound: I watched the episode when it came out on Cartoon Network’s website. I had planned to go see it in theaters, but that was canceled.

The gems in this episode are very concerned for Steven right now, because he has been missing for days. It must have be a surprise to see him with Jasper walking out of that bathroom. She continues to address him as “My Diamond”.

Steven seems to have run out of people to turn to in this crisis. He feels like he can’t talk to the gems anymore, talking to Connie would dredged up too many feelings, he’s lost his connection with his dad, and now he’s even hurt/killed Jasper. With no more connections, he turns to the Diamonds.

Homeworld is now more colorful than ever. All kinds of gems run around the throne room and there’s even tours of the palace. There is an upcoming election between the two Zircons we met during the trial.

Spinel is on this tour (has she done this before and does she do it all the time? Or is this the first time she’s decided to do this?). There seems to be no ill will towards Steven, and most of what plagued her during the movie seems to be gone (I’m not actually sure how “fine” she is. When Steven asks “What’s wrong with you?” she responds “The usual”. So I would possibly say that not all of her issues are resolved but at least she has the diamonds to support her). After explaining his gem troubles to her, Spinel takes Steven to see the diamonds.

This whole sequence of events felt very fairy-tale-esque. Something about visiting three people to solve a problem, with three very different approaches, except in a fairy-tale the third approach is what usually works.

Yellow can fix any gem and change their form, but the root of Steven’s problem isn’t physical. Blue can make any one happy, but Steven’s problem isn’t exactly emotional either. It’s deeper than surface level emotions, it’s trauma and a lack of a support system. White’s new ability is to let others control her and in a way this amplifies the voice of the voiceless and this can allow gems to talk to themselves. Steven, while controlling White, tries to shatter her, or at least has an intrusive thought about this. This sequence could be interpreted in many ways however, he might have been trying to hurt himself, or White, or Pink, or even all three.

Disturbed by what he did, he leaves. He asks Spinel how she got rid of her “vengeful thoughts” (because that’s how he felt about White, himself, and Pink in that moment). She tells him that she met him and that he told her that she could change. Steven does not want to hear his own advice anymore.

With no more answers or solutions than he started with, Steven leaves homeworld, leaving his sandal behind. Many have pointed out that Steven usually has lost a sandal (in bubbled and bismuth) when he is mistaken for Rose. Here, I’m not sure he’s mistaken for anyone.

So the diamond’s powers are all the opposite of what they used to be. I’m not sure why I didn’t put this together until Tumblr user its-a-gemfact pointed this out, but Pink’s powers were destructive, but she chose to be a healer instead. I think it’s the backwards reveal of all this that had me not thinking about this in its chronological order.

When this episode ended, I was unsure of where he could go. Would he run away all together? Where could he possibly go?

Everything’s Fine: Steven takes the route of denial to try and move on.

Connie calls him and he continues to deflect. He doesn’t want to admit that he’s struggling or that he has hurt anyone. His thoughts about this broadcast on the tv. When he turns it off, he sees his diamond eyes in the reflection for the first time.

So he decides to act like nothing happened. That he is the old Steven and he can just go on with his life without confronting any of this. He looks to the old painting of himself and Garnet in Poolhopping. There he is depicted as an angel. That’s what he want to be. He (unintentionally) yells “I’m fine”, this shatters the glass of his window.

He literally runs away when the gems try to talk him about this. He decides to go to little homeschool again, because it’s the place that he has felt the most needed before.

He crashes Peridot’s horticulture class. Volleyball is there and we don’t get to see whether or not her eye healed. Steven inserts himself into the lesson and offers to perk up some of the plants. Him doing so causes many Plant Stevens to grow and they just run around little homeschool telling people that they are there to help.

It looks like Garnet is some kind of marriage counselor now, so that’s interesting.

Steven then decides to “help” Bismuth at the forge. Blue and Yellow Pearl are there as well as the Crystal Gem Pearl. They are forging “wedding armor”. Is it Yellow Pearl that is getting married or is she merely a model for the armor? When doing the detail work on the armor, Steven splits the anvil in half. He can no longer do delicate things. This is because his stress management is not going well and his body just thinks he is always in danger.

He leaves to find some gems and Onion playing baseball. He joins and catches a ball that almost hits the Heaven and Earth Geodes. For once, one of his plans almost goes right. He lets out a cry of relief and joy, but this destroys the buildings around him. He says he can fix it. He and the plant Stevens begin to move the debris.

When he returns home, the Crystal Gems, Greg and Connie are all there. They confront him about how he’s been acting like he’s okay when he clearly isn’t. He’s even been subconsciously broadcasting a cry for help to Connie’s phone.

Steven has a great monologue here. He talks about the mistakes he’s made these last few episodes, the fight he had with his dad (normal he says), breaking the anvil, the vengeful thoughts towards White, and shattering Jasper. He calls himself a fraud. “How did I keep getting away with this?” He says that he will just continue to make mistakes and fix them forever and ever. He concludes that he is a monster and from within him a monster bursts.

I have felt (and sometimes still feel) like Steven here. As someone with ADHD, my days can just feel like one big series of mistakes.

I Am My Monster: Steven feels like a monster, so he is one now. He doesn’t rampage through the city though. He seems more or less confused and afraid of this new form.

The Crystal Gems, Connie and Greg do not want to hurt him. A plan of attack is never formed. They know that he could potentially damage beach city, so they need to restrain him or return him to his human form.

The B team and the Diamonds (plus Spinel) show up as well. All of these people have had their lives very much effected by Steven in a very positive way. Even the Cluster shows up.

Everyone tries a multitude of ways to restrain and help Steven. Nothing seems to be working and they all try to blame themselves, but as Connie points out, that made the situation about themselves, not Steven. She tells them that they need to show that they are there for him now.

They all give him a tearful hug and tell him all the ways he has helped and now they are there to help him.

“Steven, you must have been so afraid to show us this side of yourself, but we’re not going anywhere. We are all going to take care of you the same way you take care of us. You know what? I don’t have your powers but” and in true fairy-tale fashion, he is transformed by a kiss.

I quoted Connie here, because she said it the most succinctly. This is what Steven needed to hear. This has been a lonely season for him. His family has always been there physically, but him hiding away his problems and feelings distanced them from him emotionally. She didn’t tell him he was or good or that his mistakes are without consequence, she just told him that they would be there for him.

When he becomes human again I think he’s afraid that he has hurt someone. He cries into Lion’s mane. That crying was realistic. I’ve heard people cry like that and I’ve cried like that. It is a great way to end an episode like this.

The Future: Steven has a therapist, finally.

Steven has decided to leave and tour all 39 (apparently) states. He wants to know where to live now.

I’ve seen some have qualms with this. I do too in a way. But in the defense of the show, he does still have his support system back home, he has solid plans to continue to see his friends as well as Connie and there’s always warp pad and Lion to bring him back.

He gives the gems some homemade cookie cats to explain his leaving. They all pretend to take it well. This makes him feel like they don’t care. He goes to the B team and they give him a tearful goodbye. Peridot finally gets to wear an appearance modifier that doesn’t meld to her body.

Jasper, who seems to be living in Little Homeworld now, tries to go with Steven. For a moment, I thought he was going to say yes. She is still addressing him as Diamond, but she does ultimately decide to stay.

Greg helps Steven pack up and Steven gives Greg his room. Steven is leaving like his dad once did and Greg has finally settled back into a home. Steven, however, plans to visit again. The gems and his dad are still his family.

Steven hugs everyone goodbye, for the first time. He and Connie seem to officially be an item after all this time. She plans to meet him at one of his first stops. (Also among his earlier stated plans were college tours with her). He starts to drive away, but he’s still bothered by the fact that the gems did not give him a tearful farewell. He puts the car in reverse and lets them know this. They were afraid of holding him back. Of course they are sad and upset, but they are still his family and this isn’t goodbye forever, it’s just a change.

He finally leaves and it seems that the whole town is out with a farewell banner too. He listens to Being Human as he drives off.

While there is a part of me that wishes some other characters could have gotten more screen time or that some other things could have been wrapped up, the other part knows that this is Steven’s story. Rebecca Sugar has talked about the theory of the sublime before. That when you have a story that goes on without showing it, when the audience takes that story and makes it their own, it becomes sublime. So when the fans inevitably write their fanfiction about Steven’s travels, Jasper’s time at little homeschool, and about the myriad of other character and things they could possibly do, this becomes sublime.

I’m glad I got the watch this show from the very beginning. I’ve met some great people online and irl because of it and it has inspired me and will continue to do so.

I have several games that I’d play occasionally, but most of the time I just check the same three apps – Messenger, Facebook, and Twitter. A Belated, Nuanced Response to the Rooster Teeth Animation Glassdoor Controversy

2019 has been an especially problematic year to be a fan of animated content from Rooster Teeth.

By now, any of you reading this might already know what happened. But for those that don’t know the gist of it, since late March of 2019, Rooster Teeth consecutively received rather scathing reviews from anonymous employees via the job recruitment website, Glassdoor.

As of the time of this post, there have been 15 negative reviews listed that can mostly be seen with a Glassdoor account. Although they did gain a bit of attention from certain people that attempted to exploit this to any Rooster Teeth Animation fans at one point or another, it was not until RWBY Conversations on Tumblr made a blog post on June 15th with a compilation of screenshots of each review and addressed the matter quite aggressively. That same day, the post made its way to all the major social media platforms and emotions spiked incredibly high.

There have been numerous opinion pieces in the form of tweets, blogs, reddit posts and videos, the last of which has been made by people who otherwise don’t know anything about Rooster Teeth. Lots of other people have been outspoken about the matter, but what do I think of it? First off, as a clarification, I was... somewhat aware of this reputation Rooster Teeth had recently been receiving a couple of weeks prior to when things blew up. I say “somewhat” because I stumbled into this from someone (who shall remain nameless) who has been quite known for being committed to paiting anything related to RT Animation in a negative light. I took the matter with a grain of salt not because I thought the reviews I saw were false (more on that later) but rather because not having an actual Glassdoor account, I only saw a small fraction of the reviews made available so I admittedly underestimated the magnitude of the situation.

With that out of the way, to sum up my thoughts on the controversy, it’s definitely concerning. Coming from someone that has spent a good year highlighting and analyzing the skills of individual animators from RWBY and the show’s production into volume 6, the scale of the backlash from former and current RT Animation employees has been a bitter pill to swallow. It’s alarming knowing that things have gotten bad enough to warrant the responses seen on Rooster Teeth’s Glassdoor page as both a stern advisory to higher management and a warning to anyone who has considered working there. However, as alarming as this all has been, what I’m not going to do at this point and what I’ve been mostly careful about avoiding is emitting a knee-jerk, heightened emotional reaction.

As stated in the beginning of this post, 2019 has been pretty rough for fans of RT Animation. This is far from the first controversy of the year to come by and invoke extreme and conflicting feelings regarding this one company name and what tends to follow are very loud, irrational and even some bad faith discussions. It doesn’t matter if it’s about the company’s animation department or about blacklisting a voice actor or what an employee advises about watching something you don’t like, the responses have been consistently reactive with extreme opinions and with little thought for nuanced or educated conversations. This matter with RT Animation has been no exception in that regard, though to be fair, it’s not without good reason. I may have my interests towards RT Animation and content both in front of and behind the scenes, but I do also value seeking information and learning. And going forward, the latter is very relevant in order to get as much of a full picture of this controversy.

Now, having said that, this is something to be genuinely concerned about and is thus a rather difficult and touchy subject to talk about. I want to make it clear that everything I’m about to say from here-on is not meant to discredit what former and current employees have said nor is it to sugarcoat Rooster Teeth’s tendencies. I may ultimately be giving Rooster Teeth some benefit of the doubt, but I’m not going to obscure the things they have done that have led to things being the way they are. At the same time, I’m not going to viciously crucify them over this either. I won’t judge or blame anyone that has or will continue to resort to harsh measures to call out Rooster Teeth on their practices regarding crunch and production management. I’m just choosing personally to throw my two cents in a less harsh manner since what I plan to cover in this blog post will require avoiding that. The goal is to share and dissect some things using whatever information I can collect and contextualize which would hopefully provide a better understanding about how things got to the way they have and what Rooster Teeth is supposedly attempting to do about it.

Getting to the Bottom of The Situation

There’s a lot to unpack so let’s first start by breaking down the reviews themselves. As mentioned earlier, between the months of March and June of 2019, there have been at least 15 critical reviews from a combination of current and former employees regarding their experiences at Rooster Teeth animation. They each may vary a bit in tone and wording, but just about all of them share the same set of complaints that can be summed up as follows:

More often than not unpaid overtime work hours

Poor planning of scheduling and budgeting from managers in higher-up positions

General pay that’s too low to compensate for the unpaid overtime

Unfulfilled promises to contract employees of being given full-time employment after their time was up

Inexperienced directors/producers/managers

This is the bulk of the criticisms and to breakdown the pattern of reviews further:

5 of them were from former employees while 10 of them were from current ones.

4 of them were from animators (2 specified 3-D animators), 2 were from compositors and the rest did not specify.

2 claimed to have worked at RT Animation for less than a year, 7 claimed to have worked for over 1 year, 2 claimed to have worked for over 3 years, 1 claimed to have worked for over 5 years and the rest did not specify.

Now some fans who have spoken about the reviews questioned the legitimacy of them. This is an understandable reaction but given the broken down information between the set of reviews, there’s evidence to suggest that they are very true. Most of who claim that they are true would immediately point to a handful of tweets from the creator of the 2-D animated series, Nomad of Nowhere, Georden Whitman who left RT Animation in 2018. His claims have much validity to them, but he’s not the only former employee who has brought up the matter directly or indirectly. Without getting too specific or naming names, one person who had been credited on RWBY & Red vs Blue from 2016-2018 indicated that the management and scheduling of productions was the reason said-person left. Another instance was one whose position was in the post-production stage of a few projects who had left RT Animation in early March of this year after having been credited in a few projects since latter 2017. This actually matches the description of one of the former employees who left a review in late March, who had been working at RT Animation for over a year. Even the description of one of the current employees who claimed to have been working for over 5 years is especially specific, as that would’ve been at least since at least 2014. Back then, the staff count on productions like RWBY volume 2 and Red vs Blue season 12 was much smaller and Rooster Teeth’s animation department was not officially founded until later that same year.

So it’s not really a matter of whether the reviews themselves have any truth to them or not. Instead, a better question to ask and focus on is why did this happen? How did things get so problematic that it led to harsh responses one after another on just one job recruitment site alone? One thing I’ve seen fans and critics of RWBY suggest after this controversy broke out was to have volume 7 be delayed, with some going as far as launching a signature campaign to plead Rooster Teeth to delay the volume as if volume 6′s production was the main culprit behind the backlash. Putting aside the very questionable success rate of online signatures, while delaying the next installment of one of their shows is not ultimately a bad idea, it’s overlooking a couple of important details. The big one is the timing of these reviews which again, have been consecutively posted on Rooster Teeth’s Glassdoor page since late March of 2019. On the 9th of that same month, the season finale of Gen:Lock premiered which actually was the same date as when the former employee who worked in post-production left the company. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Gen:Lock’s production was what ultimately led to the backlash when you take into account director and writer of the show, Gray Haddock, posted a journal entry on June 2018 where he elaborated on the arrangement of staff between that show and RWBY volume 6′s production.

“Some of you have had questions about how production of gL impacts RWBY or vice-versa, and the answer is that these are largely parallel productions with separate crews.”

Earlier in January of 2018 on the season 1 finale episode of RWBY Rewind, Gray confirmed that Gen:Lock was “in the throws of pre-production”, where Gray was finishing a couple of the scripts left characters and mechs were being designed. A month prior, Gray posted a journal entry, stating that storyboards started on the first week of December. Though when he said the characters and mechs were being “designed”, it’s unclear whether that meant they were already designed and were in the midst of being modeled or not. But given how Gray also said animation would start “pretty soon” at the time, it might’ve been the latter, maybe?

It was never made clear when the animation phase started for Gen:Lock between the months of January and June of 2018. Regardless, the fact that both productions were for several months happening at the same time was what bit Gray in the butt. Now on the one hand, he’s not entirely wrong about the crews between productions being separate. As far as higher positions like directors, supervisors, leads, and assistant leads were concerned, certain teams like animation, lighting, and modeling between Gen:Lock and RWBY volume 6 did have separate names leading the helms. However, as the old saying goes, the devil is in the details and upon closer inspection, not all teams for both shows’ respective productions had separate leads such as camera layout, crowds & tech. Not only that, but the lower positions of each team had a lot of names overlap. And these credits were just from the first episodes of RWBY volume 6 and Gen:Lock. This is not counting how certain names like Paula Decanini who was co-lead animator throughout RWBY volume 6 wound up being co-lead animator for Gen:Lock by episode 7. Also, something to keep in mind is that a one or two reviews mentioned how some employees were under contract for roughly 90 days, equating to 3 months. It’s possible that Gen:Lock needed the extra hands by earlier January as maybe a sign that maybe deadlines during the production were not being met accordingly.

Now none of this is to say that RWBY had no potential issues of it’s own. One review from a 3-D animator mentioned about doing a “10-14 minute episode in 2 weeks” (whether that’s through the entire production or during later episodes is unclear) as an example of higher management having insanely high expectations, which likely referred to RWBY. It doesn’t help that for volume 6, the Lost Fable episode marked both the longest and one of the most difficult episodes to make, so it is not exempt from this. However, Gen:Lock’s episodes were longer, spanning between 20-30 minutes on average which meant that on the day of an episode’s premiere, every stage and aspect of that half-hour long episode had to be finished with each episode premiering back-to-back without a break. While RWBY’s episodes can vary more wildly in length, they are on average under 20 minutes. Also, not every episode of RWBY has a fight sequence whereas every episode of Gen:Lock had at least one either in the form of actual battles or sparring matches between mechs, humans or aircraft. That’s noteworthy due to how, at least in RWBY, a fight sequence can span between 4-6 weeks while a dialogue sequence can take roughly 2 weeks to do. Assuming a similar time frame applies to the same kinds of sequences in Gen:Lock, that, combined with each episode’s run time and the amount of animators, compositors, lighting artists, modelers, layout artists and crowd artists having to go back and forth between RWBY volume 6 & Gen:Lock, especially when the latter premiered right when the former finished, that would have likely led to the absurd crunch periods we’ve been hearing about.

Speaking of crowd artists, that’s another matter to consider. RWBY and Gen:Lock may both be 3-D animated projects, but the latter is arguably more demanding of its presentation due to its story’s hard sci-fi setting. This can apply to the show having a set of assigned User Interface or “UI” compositors for the many holographic images and text displayed throughout the show, which is unique to Gen:Lock, as well as models of background characters and their animations. In an interview from the website Inverse on October 9th, 2018, Miles Luna, the voice of Migas in Gen:Lock and co-writer of RWBY said the following:

“It’s one thing to make a fantasy world because you can’t compare it to real life,” says Miles Luna. “But a cartoon version of something that exists? All eyes are going to be on what’s correct. One of those things is crowds.” Without getting deep into the specifics, Luna says Rooster Teeth has made leaps in efficiently creating crowd scenes, not to mention making them look alive. “We did a whole bunch of R&D on crowd research for gen:LOCK that we’re now able to use retroactively for RWBY Volume 6,” he explains.

It was never specified ever since what supposed leaps were made in creating crowd scenes, but there is a clue. Back in RTX Austin of 2018 in August, it was confirmed from both the compositing and tech panels that RWBY volume 6 would be utilizing a new software for Crowd simulations called Houdini from Side FX. This is different from how for volume 5, the Autodesk Maya plug-in, Golaem was used and before that, crowds were done more manually. This is backed by lead crowds artist, Jacob Hilton on episode 1 of CRWBY: Behind the Episode season 2. It’s a likelihood that Houdini was similarly used for Gen:Lock and this is not the first time a software was used for one production before being used for another one. Though given the scale of background characters for crowds that have to sit, talk, walk, run and whatever other kinds of gestures in various shots, it may have possibly served as a challenge to handle, even with a more efficient software. It doesn’t help either that a majority of the main cast are seen wearing 2-3 different outfits which require extra models to be built and rigged.

I want to stress that all of backlash is not due to Gen:Lock exclusively, as much of this applies to other animated shows like RWBY. But it does seem to be the straw that broke the camel’s back for some and it’s production and scheduling might’ve been part of a broader problem. In 2018, there was a certain strategy to scheduling various Rooster Teeth animated shows, be it 2-D or 3-D ones. Let’s look at the following:

Although there are a few small gaps and a one or two overlaps, a season/volume of each show have come and gone right after one another. And that was just from 2018 to 2019 as of the time of this post. Scheduling content like this was not always case for Rooster Teeth, even back when the Animation department was founded. I imagine that this schedule is parallel to the gradual changes in how their first membership has been arranged which is due to the success of their animated content. Once upon a time, before Rooster Teeth Animation existed, it use to be that RWBY and Red vs Blue would be available for paid subscribers a mere hour before it was made available for everyone else on the website.

It’s clear that Rooster Teeth does consider their animated content very valuable, but the scale of the projects and the rate they end up being made are at the expense of the middle-men going through unpaid overtime. There are cases where with say, RWBY, measures are taken to increase the quantity of staff so that almost everyone is not required to wear more than one hat, have the pipeline for different software and plug-ins set-up at the start of a production and making sure every team has their own coordinator and manager. But it’s clear that despite these measures taken, they have not been large enough to fully compensate for the increased scale of the productions and the rate these productions need to get made. These circumstances are unfortunately not exclusive to Rooster Teeth either, as this has been a prevalent problem in the Japanese animation industry. On rare, more extreme occasions, you hear of staff members of animation studios either committing suicide or dying from overwork (otherwise known as “Karoshii”), whereas reports of how animation studios are suffering tight schedules to get shows like Black Clover, Dragon Ball Super, Märchen Mädchen, Dynamic Chord, God Eater the Animation and Attack on Titan out week-to-week with either poor, mixed or efficient-looking results through the presentation are more commonly made. Though similar to this Glassdoor situation, there are people in the anime industry, such as production assistants, who have anonymously spoken out about the harsh, troubling working conditions. Part of these situations may be due to Japan’s culture being taken to an extreme, but the systemic woes plaguing the anime industry can always be seen as cautionary tales of what a company like Rooster Teeth should avoid doing.

Looking Ahead towards Rooster Teeth’s Future

A lot has been touched on regarding the Rooster Teeth’s poor management within their animation department and there’s more I could touch on. There might even be certain woes behind-the-scenes that I’m unaware of. However my goal is not to perpetually dwell on the downsides. The question to ask from here-on is what can be done about this or rather what is being done about it? To stress, it’s not just about what should be done. Yes, Rooster Teeth should improve their management and recruit people who know how to handle deadlines better. Yes, Rooster Teeth should avoid overtime crunch periods from happening in their animated productions as much as possible. Yes, staff of various positions should be payed better. There’s a lot of discussions about what they should do and I do not disagree with any of those advisories. But there’s not a whole lot of what they can do or even what they are supposedly doing about the situation right now.

There have been certain suggestions on what Rooster Teeth can do. Delaying RWBY volume 7 is one thing, but balancing out the scheduling between all of their live-action and their animated content more would help, assuming they haven’t already done so. Unionizing would also be a significant improvement and is something I’ve seen a former employee desire. Another animation studio in Austin, Texas, Powerhouse who is most known for making the Netflix Castlevania series, is one of many studios signed to collective bargaining agreements with The Animation Guild. These are some valid steps they could take, though for now, let’s examine what is actually being about all of this, starting with looking at Rooster Teeth CEO, Matt Hullum’s Journal Entry post who responded about the matter on June 17th. More specifically, certain segments of his entry are worth examining:

“Over the last several months we conducted a review and have taken several steps to improve communication and workflow to ensure we have a studio where people are happy to come to work every day. We are announcing today new measures on the road to improvement.

Effective today, we are moving forward with a previously planned change in our producing and creative structure. Gray G. Haddock is stepping down as head of studio for animation to dedicate himself to a strictly creative role. With Gray’s help, we have been in the process of hiring a new production head of the department, who will be responsible for the overall producer hierarchy and staff management. We want to thank Gray for his hard work and dedication to growing the animation studio over these years, and are excited to continue working with him in this new capacity.

Further, we are consulting with experienced leaders in the animation industry on our workflow, pipeline, production structure and other areas to enhance the workplace experience for our staff. Margaret M. Dean, the head of Ellation animation studios and president of Women In Animation, will consult with us and aid the search for a new studio lead.”

There are a few important things to dissect about Matt’s response. First of all, the fact that this is something higher-ups at the company have spent several months doing can be interpreted in two ways. On the one hand, it can be seen as wondering why is it that only in that span of time have more drastic steps been taken to do something about this as oppose to a year or so before that, which is a very fair counterargument. On the other hand, taking several months to do this which could’ve been around the time the series of Glassdoor reviews since March were posted, if not before that is at least a sign that they have been conscious about these issues to want to do something about it and spend the time tending to the matter.

If the journal entry ended there, then it would naturally be seen as vague, damage control, press release speak that would satisfy no one. But there is of course more to examine, such as Gray Haddock stepping down from his position as Head of the animation department. When Gray became the head of RT Animation as the department was founded in September of 2014, that was at a time when the staff count was a lot smaller than what it is now. Whatever the reasons why, Gray stepped up for the position when the department was just starting. The problem is that as far as his career up until that point, his prior credentials were generally in voice work and theater, specifically anime dubbing. He had a creative background, but not so much a management one. That’s not to say his time spent on voice acting did not lend itself to management at all, though. In an interview with Inverse on August 7th, 2018, Gray mentioned as a means of being flexible, until the rest of the cast for Gen:Lock got around to recording lines for their respective characters, Gray “voiced the entire first batch of episodes by himself”:

“We had to hit milestones. We had to begin animating,” he said. “I read all the parts with the cadence and intonations I was hoping to direct the performances into, and roll with the changes as needed. The poor crew had to put up with three or four months show of me performing every part on the show.”

This is elaborated more in his interview with Anime News Network on October 26th, 2018 where he mentioned that despite getting A-List actors on board, getting the cast to do recordings in the midst of their busy schedules forced the production staff to be flexible. Whether or not this included the character Kazu Iida, who was voiced by Koichi Yamadera at Warner Bros anime in Japan and thus constantly speaks Japanese (Gray supposedly knows some Japanese), that was a hell of a task to do either way. This is not the first time he did this either. During production of volume 3 of RWBY, when Meg Turney, the voice of Neon Katt, was not available to record lines for the character, Gray had voiced all of her lines for chapter 5 so that the animators could get around to handling the character. So he has at least been pretty conscious about making sure the ball in a given production like Gen:Lock kept rolling through whatever he could do. But it’s clear that as Rooster Teeth Animation is growing up, not just through the tone of their content but through the need for a more efficient and healthy working environment, Gray Haddock was only capable of so much.

This leads us to the final point of the journal entry, the matter of consulting with experienced leaders in the animation industry. As far as animation studios go, RT Animation is still a fledgling that since its founded has arguably grown too big, too quickly. and at least some of the management staff do not have many years of experience under their belt. So to consult names like Margaret M. Dean, the head of Ellation Animation and President of Women in Animation is an especially big deal.

Though before talking further about her, a quick clarification should be made as to what Ellation and Women in Animation are. Ellation is a division of Otter Media which is under Warner Media Entertainment. Ellation studios is Ellation’s animation department with two sites located in Burbank, California and Tokyo, Japan. Women in Animation is a non-profit organization that Margaret has remained co-president of since 2013. With that out of the way, what is Margaret Dean’s relevance in all of this? This is sadly the part of the journal entry that’s most neglected even though it’s the most important. To make matters worse, the few people who have referred to Margaret when talking about the journal entry associate her name exclusively with the Crunchyroll original animated project, High Guardian Spice announced last August. This is one of those times where it could not be any more essential for one to separate his/her opinion of a work (or in this case, a teaser trailer for an upcoming work) from the names involved with the project and their credentials. With Margaret M. Dean, what people should look into is her IMDB profile page which gives an extensive list of her career in the American animation industry.

This is someone with over 27 years worth of experience in Animation and almost all of her credentials have to do with production management, coordination and supervision on a variety of shows. That’s nearly 5 times the amount of time Gray has been credited as supervising producer in a majority of the animated shows he has been involved in so far. To further put this in perspective, here’s a list of some of the animated productions she worked on:

Production manager/assistant for episodes of The Ren & Stimpy Show (1992-1993)

Production supervisor for every episode of Teen Titans and the Trouble in Tokyo movie (2003-2006)

Production manager for season 1 of Men in Black TV Series (1997-1998)

Production supervisor for many episodes of Ozzy & Drix (2002-2004)

Production supervisor for seasons 1 & 2 of Xiaolin Showdownn (2003-2004)

Line producer of most episodes of What’s New Scooby Doo (2002-2006)

Supervising producer of Supermansion (2016-2019)

Supervising Producer for 30 episodes of Robot Chicken (2015-2018)

Supervising Producer of Hot Streets (2016-2018)

That is not a resume to sniff at and the fact she’s one of the experienced leaders in the animation industry Matt and Gray have been consulting is a testament to how seriously they are about resolving this problem going forward. Or maybe this is all a way for them to save face. Who knows? I’m a just fan making educated guesses, not a psychic.

What Can Fans Do About This?

This situation has of course led to varied emotions suddenly erupting when the Glassdoor reviews went viral. Some have been weary about this while others have capitalized on the matter to stir up further controversy for the sake of views. But some (including me) have wondered if there is anything the fans can do. Some have declared that they would cancel their First member subscriptions to teach Rooster Teeth a lesson. I’m not going to tell people how to go about spending their money (and no, what I spoke of in my Monty Oum Vision, part 1 video was not meant to say otherwise) but I’m not sure how much good rioting by not paying anything will do beyond getting the company’s direct attention. At best, it may put the higher-ups on even higher alert but the whole point of the reviews is to address the need for current and would-be employees to have better working conditions and better pay.

We’re talking about certain animators that due to various circumstances, one of which being financial, that at least some employees are stuck with working at Rooster Teeth. Make of that what you will, but that is the reality and I’m not so sure how much canceling a paid subscription will help the animators as oppose to hurting them. Again, this is not about me telling you to keep your subscriptions out of obligation. That’s not the point. Rather, this is about finding other possible ways on our end to help the ones suffering the most.

So what can we do? Well, that’s another reality about the situation. There’s really a whole lot we, the general public since this is something that at the end of the day has to be resolved internally. Sure, we got the CEO’s attention over the course of the weekend. But beyond that, I’m not so sure we can cause more to happen than that. That said, we can provide support to those who either currently are or have worked on the Rooster Teeth shows we are fans of. Familiarizing yourself with the names of anyone in the staff of a show’s production through the ending credits and following them on Twitter or wherever else they frequent via social media is a good starting point. This is especially helpful in case certain folks may announce needing financial help of some sort. RWBY and RWBY Chibi animators Asha Bishi and Andrea Caprotti specifically spring to mind. Asha, who some may know of for her expertise character acting, including with Faunus characters like Blake, Kali, and Sun and how their animal traits are animated, put up a Go Fund Me campaign since April of 2019 where she needs outside help in order to pay off her Hospital Bills after going through some heart problems and being rushed to an ambulance a few times. Andrea who has animated scenes in Gen:Lock, RWBY, RWBY:Chibi & Red vs Blue, including Pyrrha kissing Jaune goodbye, part of Cinder, Emerald & Mercury vs Amber, and the “Evil Genius” skit, opened art commissions as of late June to raise money to get a ticket to see a very close friend of hers going through Chemotherapy.

These are right now a couple of the only examples I could find, but they are nonetheless more helpful ways fans can immediately help any skilled talent. And even if you can’t pitch in by providing money yourself, spreading the word also helps. Beyond that, the best thing we can do is wait-and-see. I know that’s not the most game-changing answer, but again, this whole situation is mostly internal affairs and while much greater measures are being taken to make things better for the animation departments employees, whether this will ultimately amount to great improvements is something only time will tell. That’s not to say I’m advising people to stop speaking out about the matter (though perhaps contacting them via email may be a more direct and expressing what you want for the employees may be a more direct and precise way than broadly shouting via social media). That might be necessary at this point in order to make sure the company does not get too lax on resolving the problem. At any rate, we can expect to start seeing the results of said-changes either as soon as RTX or whenever we see the new name for the next head of RT Animation in ending credits, whoever that might be or if there is a change in the scheduling of their content. Whatever happens, change is definitely on the horizon, one way or another.
