heads- up: someone is taking jc-centric fics and turning them into jc-bashing wangxian fics
I don't usually like to bring twitter drama over to tumblr but since the perpetrator in this case explicitly said they do this ON TUMBLR I felt it was pertinent to do so.
Today user DyuaLan on twitter, aka @jiaoji on tumblr, publically bragged about finding chengxian, xicheng, and zhanzheng fics and changing the names to make them wangxian fics with jiang cheng bashing.
Tumblr media
When authors (understandably) reacted to this by blocking them, they boasted about still having 15 stolen fics in their drafts on top of the ones they've already posted.
Tumblr media
And that they do all of this stuff on tumblr anyway, not twitter
Tumblr media
If you have written any kind of Jiang Cheng ships, or Jiang Cheng-centric fic in general, and are not a fan of your work being stolen, it's in your best interest to block them.
They also said that they block everyone they steal from. Though if you go to the blog now and are blocked, please don't panic, that might just be for fanwar reasons.
Here's proof that DyuaLan is in fact the same person as Jiaoji:
Tumblr media
(@jiaoji and @jiaoji2 lead to the same blog, it was probably called this because they at some point lost access/moved from their previous blog @jiao-ji)
And here jiaoji is bragging on their tumblr about feeling too lazy to even rewrite someone else's work
Tumblr media
Their ao3 is "Jiao_ji" where they have 16 works total, most of which are in portuguese, making it harder to verify which ones are stolen, as a lot of their "sources" are probably in english. (Most of the fics they have written on tumblr itself are also in english) They also have a wattpad account with the url "Dilf_ji"
As a bonus here they are 2 years ago whining about zhancheng authors blocking them because it means they can no longer steal their fics, this has been going on for a while.
Tumblr media
And talking a bit more about stealing from chengxian and zhancheng authors:
Tumblr media
While I haven't written any jiang cheng ships, I am a fic writer, and I know the work that goes into it. I can work on a single oneshot for months on end. So this kind of attitude, where if you hate a ship the author's work is just free for the taking, is appaling to me. Inspiration is normal, fandom is inherently transformative. Hell, ao3 has a "works inspired by" function for exactly that. But wholesale lifting someone's else's writing, only changing the ship and adding salt about a character you hate? Yeah, no. "Character bashing" fics aren't my cup of tea in the first place, but if you're going to do it, at least have the decency to write the damn things yourself.
I don't like doing callouts, so while I know that I can't really control anyone else's actions, I want to say for my own peace of mind... please just block this person. I don't wanna cause even more discourse. Remember: you don't feed trolls. I posted this because i think writers deserve to be warned when someone is maliciously stealing and editing their work, not to instigate harassment.

WIP Thursday
Tumblr media
I’m unsure which WIPs to post snippets of. I’m always writing new stuff and working things that I’m planning to continuing and editing. The writing feels like a compulsion but is also therapeutic for me. It’s a curious conundrum 🤔
I was tagged by @avastrasposts and @frenchiereading I love you two ❤️
Anywho, this week, I’m just going to name ongoing or pending fics I have. It’s a long ass list but if you follow me, you should have an idea that I am a master of none and will write whatever idea sticks in my noggin. Behold!
Current ongoing fics (on Tumblr):
Nights in Coruscant - Din Djarin
Coasting through the Rainbow - Javier Peña
A Safe Place for Us - Dieter Bravo
Our Journey through the Star Ocean - Din Djarin
Weddings 101 with Dieter - Dieter Bravo
Fire and Fury - Pero Tovar (DDDE)
Security Logs - Frankie Morales
Therapy for the Well-Adjusted - Marcus Pike
Uncomplicated Mi Amor - Javier Peña
Come live with me Angel - Benny Miller
Current fics on AO3 (might be on Tumblr one day, you’ll also need to be a registered user to read them):
Front Office Adjunct - Dave York (Dark)
Foul Play - Javier Peña (kinda Dark)
Caught in the Magic of You - Marc Spector
Fifty-Six Wildflower Lane - Frankie Morales (Dark)
WIPs that are in Nerdie’s notes floating around:
Viridesicant Seduction - Ezra
The Green Shop of Memories - Marcus Moreno AU with magic (maybe Nerdie looked at her Harry Potter books too long, thought she was in the coven with the witches from “The Acolyte” and chose to pull a modern day fantasy out of thin air) 👀 Also @secretelephanttattoo ‘s glorious fic Afterword is to blame.
Common Tongue (Moment’s Silence) - Din Djarin
Drinks after Work - Tim Rockford (He’s gotten most of my horny vibes as of late, what’s a few more? Also coworkers to lovers? Also they’re in their mid-forties. The vibes say so, so it shall be written.)
Honey and Sugarplum - Jack Daniels (Him and that damn Stetson. The brim is wide like him.)
No title - Oberyn Martell as a sex worker? (All vibes. Could stay as is, could have an older virgin reader or just an older reader who wanted to explore some stuff)
No title - Poe Dameron talking you through giving yourself an orgasm. (Vibes and also Zoom?)
No title - Marcus Acacius fic (The plot? convoluted and doesn’t have Marcus in the orgy because he wasn’t invited. Frankly he doesn’t want to be there and it’s not hot without him. But is still plot relevant, sneaky stuff, plans and an assassination or two. It’s Rome baby, just a Tuesday evening before we hit up the bath house.)
No title - trying to rework an m/m fic I’ve been trying to write since January. Why did I need a time skip in there? Also don’t worry about feelings. It’s buns out. But also feelings because, we care kinda. Well about seeing tears and knowing we did that. This is why it needs to be reworked, maybe with different characters. Theme will stay the same though.
So you know, a few things. Just a couple. 🤭
Does anyone believe when I say it might be a problem? Who does all this at the same time? Ugh…😭
Peeps who might be interested: @inept-the-magnificent @megamindsecretlair @soft-persephone @soft-girl-musings @angelofsmalldeath-codeine
@maggiemayhemnj @magpiepills @morallyinept @lotusbxtch @bitchwitch1981
@mysterious-moonstruck-musings @for-a-longlongtime @lady-bess @westside-rot @fhatbhabiee
@sin-djarin @syd-djarin @julesonrecord @perotovar @djarinmuse

Round three of the Fandom Boost Bingo is ready to go! This round, Astrocat has found love and is celebrating with a Valentine Edition!
The round officially starts Wednesday, February 1. Feel free to grab the card and get going! Remember, there's no need to sign up, but if you would like us to share your card (whether you just fill one square or get a whole blackout), the due date to @ us is February 15. That's right: two whole weeks to share high fives and love across the fandom universe!
Astrocat and Aliencat would also like to encourage anyone who's interested to join them in celebrating love with a special Valentine's OTP Edition. Feel free to focus your high five efforts this month on your one true pairing -- whether that's your favorite romantic ship ever or the best gen buds that you love so much. (For the nonromantic, Aliencat wants to assure you that you can just fill out a regular card if hearts & flowers aren't of interest.)
As always, a list of definitions for each of the squares is below the cut. Don't forget to include a link to each fanwork or creator you high fived when it's time to share your card!
☆ How do I fill my card? How is each square defined?
Here’s the way we’re defining the activities associated with each card. If any of this is confusing after you read it over, send us a message and we’ll help!
- ‘leave kudos on a fic’
This is the easiest one! Just go out and find a fic you like and leave a kudos on it, if you haven’t already. It’s a small gesture but it makes an author know that someone actually read their story!
- ‘reblog/retweet an art post’
Find any art post you like and share it! Here’s the catch: you need to interact with it a little. When you reblog/retweet, please tell the creator what you thought about the piece – you can add some tags, or reply to the post, or quote-retweet or add a comment, or anything! A simple “I love this!” is nice but some details are even better (“your linework is so good!” or “that shade of blue is perfect”). One thing to think about: a lot of art on Tumblr is reposted (like when a user posts another artist’s work from Pixiv, say), so it’s nice if you make an effort to interact with posts that are actually from the creator if you can. That way the artist will see your comment!
- ‘reblog/retweet a fic post’
Same as the above, but for fic! Again, tags/replies/comments are needed, preferably with a little detail. You don’t need to be super eloquent or leave a detailed review (although if you have time/energy, that would be appreciated!); a tag as simple as “that was really cute” or “great characterization!” will do. Like with the art posts, it’s nice if you reblog directly from the writer (if you can) – some fics are posted by AO3 feed bots and the like, so the author may not even know a reblog has happened.
- ‘reblog/retweet an edit’
Same as the above, but for edits! Edits can include a gif set, or a set of screencaps, or even a fanvid. And, again, some simple tags/replies are needed. “I love that song choice!” for a vid or “great coloring!” on a gifset can let people know their work is being appreciated.
- ‘comment on a fic’
Find a fic, on any fic-hosting site you like, and leave a comment. That’s it! Again, no need to leave a novel-length comment (unless you’re inspired!) – a sentence or two is all we’re asking for this square to be considered complete. This is a great opportunity to let a writer know how their piece made you feel, or what section you particularly liked.
- ‘message a creator’
‘Creator’ here can mean anyone who makes *anything* to do with fandom: art, edits, fic, meta, knitted sweaters with character faces on them – if they’ve made anything, they’re a creator, and now’s your chance to let them know they’re appreciated. Send a message (anonymous or not!) letting them know that you enjoyed their work!
- ‘make a rec post’
This is a chance to tell your fandom friends about something they need to see. You can rec a fic, a blog, a fan event, an artist, an author, that person who knits sweaters with character faces – any kind of fandom thing that you want to make sure people see. This doesn’t have to be long or complicated, but feel free to go into as much detail as you want! Just make your own post, on Tumblr or Twitter or wherever else seems best to you, and give that thing you loved a little fanfare.
- ‘interact with a meta post’
A little love for our analytical friends! Here, you can reblog/retweet any kind of meta post for your fandom, whether it’s a three sentence headcanon or an essay-length dissection of why Character X is the absolute best character in Fandom Y. It’s even better if you respond to the meta, whether that’s agreeing or (respectfully!) adding your own thoughts, but sharing it is the main thing here.
And here’s the non-decorated version, in case you feel like making it your own. Get creative, if you want!

Intro post!!
About me (general)
Hi my name is Alex and I’m a swf age regressor!
My big age is 18 and my lil age is around 3-5!
My pronouns are he/him and I’m a bisexual trans boy!
I am neurodivergent (audhd) and also have an anxiety disorder & cptsd.
I regress mainly due to my conditions and because of how difficult I find the world due to them, but also because of childhood trauma. Although, I don’t always regress due to negative emotions, sometimes it’s just because I find it easier to relax/express positive emotions when in a younger headspace.
At the moment, only my sister knows about my age regression. I am building up the courage to tell my parents about it though!!
I am currently a student in year 13 (behind a year cause of mental health stuffs) & I’m hoping to go to uni to do Forensic Anthropology!! (LIKE IN BONES!!!)
If you could, especially when making jokes, pls use tone tags with me cause I don’t want to take anything the wrong way =)
About me (things I enjoy/interact with)
I have a lot of interests, but you’ll be able to tell when I’m hyperfixating on one of them =)
The list, in no specific order btw, :

questionable government spies but better written and five years late: a newsies multichap coming tonight, july 2, 2023 EST
hi hello. it’s me saph. back at it again.
the title is exactly what this looks like.
for those of you that were familiar with the first iteration of this story, welcome back, i’m so happy to have you. for those of you who are not, welcome to my long anticipated spies fic. this was originally published under the user @/suddenly-im-respecsable in about 2018-2019 (there is the early version still floating on tumblr but i have changed my url since and it’s not easily findable) and was cross posted on ao3 but was taken down
the basic gist of the story was that race and albert were fbi agents and were field training jack. they get summoned to nyc (where they were trained) to deal with some super hard gang case that no one can crack. in the process they meet spot who is working for said gang and wants out. davey jacobs is the head of the nyc branch of the fbi and hates race and albert because they almost blew up his weapons lab.
i think i got through 14 ish chapters before realizing the whole thing was badly written and in order for it to be what i wanted it to be i needed to redo it. and then i graduated high school and started college and changed fandoms and started dating my boyfriend and there was a global pandemic and then i graduated college and all of that.
and now, 5 years later, i am back on my bullshit, this time with a creative writing degree under my belt and @ainti-pretty to force me to finish what i started. the plot is all relatively the same, just a little tweaked. i never got to the point of all the plot twists so if you read the original version you have no spoilers besides some background knowledge that i am changing around a little. im working entirely off of my original hand written outline that is on the back of my notes from my 11th grade english class
and what motivated me to do this now you may ask? well i’m interning in nyc over the summer and can do irl accurate location mapping lol. that and i made a tumblr to literally post this story and i never finished it so i figured that i should probably do that. and if you’re doubting that this will get finished, which, fair, @ainti-pretty and i are literally living together next year and i am certain that i will be hounded about this every day of my existence
i am tagging people who i remember being very excited about this back in the day. if you want to be tagged in future parts of this please let me know. if you don’t just feel free to ignore :) @sun-kissed-star @getchapapes @jack-kellys @spot-conlon-king-of-brooklyn @fairly-awkward-trashcan @ritsunaru @heller-obama @turtle-steverogers @boygirlctommy @newsies-trash-queen @telling-tragedy @alberteatsglass
and since i have every ounce of this planned, here is my casting if you are interested:
92sies: mush, blink, davey
obc: spot, crutchie, smalls, medda, pulitzer
toursies: specs
proshot: albert, romeo, elmer, buttons, jojo, (anyone else i’ve forgotten is probably proshot)
uksies: jack, finch
race: weird combo of btc and giuseppe bausillo
katherine: a literal tiktok girlie
i am cross posting this on ao3, the tumblr version will all be tagged under #spies 2.0 and it will all me master posted and pinned on my blog.
im so excited :)) this fic is my baby and i want to thank everyone who has read it previously and everyone who will this go around. let me know if you want to be tagged !!

Just curious here, what's the point of sharing links of pillowfort in Tumblr if it's not visible for those without an account?
hello hello o/
thank you for the ask, especially such a relevant one
i mentioned before, but i don't like leaving my things unlocked after the ai craze had started. my ao3 is locked for user-only too, and i know it cut off a sizeable portion of my audience (which is always a shame and a downer), but i'm not willing to back down on this one. some people reached out to me because they were interested in seeing what i had to offer, and i've sent them invitation links to ao3. now, they're quite avid users, there.
this is more of the same. i'm more than willing to share invitation links to pf, right now i have 50 to spare, and will be able to give more with time - if there will be a demand for even 50, in all honesty. if people want to check what's in the link, it's a rather easy fix.
said fix would require some effort on the reader's part, no denying that, but if they can't spare three clicks to see artists who are unwilling to budge on this ai shitfest and are moving elsewhere... well. then i won't be the one to blame for the lack of trying, here. i've offered ways how to find me and solutions on how to reach me. and based on how the poll is going, some were only here for reblogs. which is fine, too, in all honesty. i get it that writing is far less clickable than art, for example.
i understand that not all would bother. i accept it. considering that some people won't budge and i don't want to feed tumblr ai, i guess there's no way around it. which is a shame, really. a real shame. i finally started feeling like this place was worth the effort, started recognizing people who left hearts and did reblogs. it would be disheartening to leave it all behind. but i cannot stay here in good conscience. that's why i was trying to offer compromises, started that poll, tried to ask how people saw the way forward and am trying to see how can i make this transition as painless as possible.
i understand that uprooting your whole online presence is hard. it's grueling, it's disheartening and demotivating. i understand that the sunk cost falacy is one hell of a beast to battle. but i can't stay. all i can if offer a way to follow or at least keep in touch. to take this route or not is decision for each and every follower i have. or maybe even had, considering my vocal stance on not continuing here. maybe i'm more used to it after burning bridges with most if not all of the ru-related part of the web. maybe i have less to lose. maybe my roots here turned out much feebler than i thought. i dunno. heh. this turned out in a rant, didn't it? sorry about that.
well, then...
tl; dr: i offer invites to pf to anyone willing to spend 2 minutes and a burner email to register if they don't want to create a proper acc for pf so they can see new things i have to offer

question for you bc you seem smart. with freedom to read, freedom to write; would that also lump in minors writing porn? and, if yes, wouldnt that affect their safety (depending on how they advertise it)?
like obviously if an anon user posted smut on ao3 idk anyone would try and hunt them down. but like if a twitter user posted a full on smut fic and had their acc public and age visible, wouldnt that lead them the risk of getting hurt?
all genuine btw im really curious :0
i'll just say this: i joined tumblr when i was underage and befriended all people who were around the same age as me, and a few who were a bit younger. we were all one big friend group of teenagers being teenagers on the internet, so of course that included talking about sex and mature topics. when i was around 16 years old the friend group had expanded and some people in their early-to-mid 20s had joined, and it all felt totally fine. and it was fine! most of them had taken on mentor-like roles with us. it felt normal and positive, until one of the mentors decided to take my public posts joking around about sex and make them into private conversations. it was not good, it was scary, and i felt trapped for a long while. even though i was having fun with the other teenagers i had befriended, there was still someone with bad intentions watching me the entire time. that is the risk that i'm concerned about when i see underage people posting their erotic works online, in a place where it's way too easy for anyone to contact them directly.
it's natural for people to feel interested in sex and erotica basically as soon as puberty starts, but it really should be kept private (or maybe among trusted same-age friends) for their own safety. i don't want people to feel like their sexual thoughts are something shameful that need to be hidden, but there is just too much risk when it's discussed publicly. the gist is that when you're a kid or a teenager online, you really need to take your safety seriously. i know it sucks, but posting your erotic works publicly is just not safe until you're older. there are precautions you can take to more effectively protect yourself from predators, and you need to take them!

Hi!!!! ʕ •̀ o •́ ʔ
welcome to my pinned post I honestly still dont know what to do with my blog like ever but still :) nice stuff. This blog contains whatever the fuck I reblog, including fandom and 18+ stuff - I do not tag my porn reblogs so if you're following me for fandom things, this is an all in one blog bc i do what i want <3 you are warned! leave if you dislike my beloved freak blog
|・ω・)
just be nice and kind babygirls, that's all i ask of <3 human decency lets go!!!! (ღ˘⌣˘ღ)
my ao3 account is https://archiveofourown.org/users/Daimashiko :) I like writing porn, my brain is constantly on khr mode :) I also never have any consistent name for my accounts, so thats also why my names are different. Hi to any discord friends who know me from well, discord <3 im sure u guys are familiar with my socials in this case
TAGS. ─=≡Σ((( つ><)つ /(>×<)\
#my art (very self explanatory I am not a creative person with names?? sorryyyyy - i also considered making my art tag into artvidaraku but like. thats too much effort jklsjgkldKJDF:SJ:JKL:JK:LDG ;;)
#khr (that is my main fandom ofc <333 - overlaps with my art but also other people's khr stuff so haha... its a mess but oh well)
#poll (i like answering them! or just reblogging polls i wanted to volunteer in but its too late </3)
#lotta tags (i tend to comment a lot in tags but these are the ones where i usually write like. a lot of commentary to the point im like ohhhh i should tag this right? curious if anyone's ever went through them but also i've never talked abt these things so. oopsssss <3 - lot of it is kinda sad / depressing but usually i am pretty reflective. kinda?)
#animals (self explanatory. i love me some fucking creatures. respect nature babygirls i adore them fellas <3)
#tumblr classic (i love getting to see the classics / things i'd personally consider a classic on my feed)
#fandom (this one's pretty commonly used! yadda yadda, talks abt fanfic and stuff / sometimes i get disappointed with fandom but that's not new lol)
#fashion (i don't use this as much as I should be?? but if you want to check out what i think is fun / a vibe <3)
#avidarecs (****i literally just made this on impulse so there's not much rn but i want to share more of my recs for things in general! fandom / songs / whatever other thing comes to mind?***// will probably be rarely used? but you never know~)
there might be more tags I haven't included but from the top of my head this is it?? Might add more, i have no clue. But anyways back to my other interests and what I'm into!
media i like: khr (its number one bc i am unable to pry reborn's hands on my stupid silly little soul so i cannot escape even if i wanted to), slay the princess + scarlet hollow (games made by the same studio. i love the art and vibes sooo much and also the fanart is sooo beautiful), Jenna Marbles (i've been obsessed w her stuff recently and I hope she's having a good time w her dogs and Julien :), kpop (honestly its only just loona bc im tired and feel old as fuck despite only being in my 20s so i am not gonna get into another thing lol), and sanrio!!! i love my melody she's a cutie patootie <3
-probably more stuff I like but this post would be a lot longer
I'm certain its obvious but I am a proshipper (also i am always in rarepair hell girl HELP. but also i will chain myself to that random mix of characters without prompting. ah....), if you don't like proshippers, leave my page and block me <3
But anyways my fav tropes (i definitely have more i just cant think of them but in general im chill with lots of stuff!)
incest (i am so fr when i say somehow i always revolve around incest ships they're just soooo good. my brain is absolutely destroyed in favor of tasty fucking food. shout out to incest shippers you guys rock luv yall :3)
age gap / size difference (these tropes are lovers and they're already fucking each other within one yard of each other. good fucking food yk?)
any toxic/problematic food (necro + lolisho rights!!!) in general. i am just. yeahhhhhhhhhhh MMMM LOAD THAT SHIT UP. i also have very little memory but still whatever
genderbend - i know it's a dwindling trope in popularity but there is nothing better than mindlessly turning a guy chara into a girl like wow..... so hot.... <3 this has also been a long time trope i've adored and i'll probably never stop using it bc its just that good for me <3 mmm. girls. cute.
monsterfucker stuff is great! (does this include animal hybrids? im going to include it with that soooo)
i think this is enough, but also before you go explore whatever maze my blog is in bc i cant be bothered enough by my blog, i will also reblog things in tandem to politics / real world things (I support Palestine <3). Am American. Am Mess. But I hope the world is kinder even just a little bit more. This world is cruel, but I hope we can continue to offer each other support and love, even when times are harrowing as always.
(っ ᵔ◡ᵔ)っ have a hug/kiss!!!! (i like gifs hehe)

please commission me: the second part
Tumblr media
hello all ^_^ my name is vero and i am asking, if people are able, to commission me! basically my last job was seasonal (april-oct) and i’m currently looking for a new job now, but something to fill the gaps between my last job and my next one. have had sufficient funds since then but as they’re Waning and i’m applying for jobs rn but i’m just trying to stay prepared, also because i’m setting aside some money for the birthdays of my sister & best friend in late jan. so i’m just trying to earn some coin for da Bills & public transport & groceries above all else while in this transitional period btwn jobs… for more essential things, etc etc.
you can commission me directly through ko-fi (my ko-fi is same as my tumblr user, krookodyke) and my general commission terms & conditions are also accessible on tumblr! (under the commission tag on my blog.) my writing is accessible on ao3 so you may get a sense of my style and etc. (my ao3 is krokorok for anyone unable to access the link.) basically, i’m open to most things— i will not write pr0ship or fetish content, but i am open to writing NSFW (50% up charge, i.e. a $10 commission with NSFW would become $15). as long as of course you’re 18 and you’re able to prove that if need be. i accept most all forms of payment, including p@yp@l, v3nmo, & c@sh@pp. as i said you can commission me directly through ko-fi, but i do recommend messaging me on tumblr first. you’re free to do it either way, but of course any comms through another method of payment need to just slide me a message first. i generally recommend sliding me a DM regardless if you’re interested, so i may get a sense of what you want and the vibe you’re looking for. generally comms take 3-5 business days depending on length, but i will always communicate and update you frequently. you’re entitled to a max of three previews of the fic as well.
i am open to writing whatever, even if i’m not in the fandom for it! but i Do possess the inherent knowledge able to write saw, yellowjackets, as well as a host of different other things. if you’re unsure or have other questions, just shoot me a DM and ask! i am more than happy to accommodate you. thank you all for tuning in and i hope you consider commissioning me soon ^_^

Various thoughts on kudos/reader engagement, which are unlikely to be of interest to anyone but me -
Like many people who are writers and/or tumblr users, I love me some external validation. At the same time, I'm pretty confident in a lot of my skills. So my issue isn't so much "oh no, people don't like my work, I must be terrible" as it is "argh, this is so frustrating, my stuff is good, why won't people recognize that?"
And in fact, looking at my Ao3 numbers, my ratios are very good. A significant percentage of the people who read leave kudos, and a fair number of the people who leave kudos leave comments. The people who read my fics like my fics. It's just that, relative to the other writers I know, very few people read them. I'm seeing responses to my poll saying that "this has a lot of kudos" means 500+ or even 1000+ kudos. I only have two fics that have over a thousand hits. Half my fics don't even have 500 hits. It's an entirely different world.
Like I said, I'm pretty secure in the quality of what I write. And I've come up with explanations that make sense to me for why I have such a small readership (I don't often write the most popular ship; I usually write short, single-chapter fics; I don't generally write things that give readers happy and/or horny feelings; and I didn't start writing until a lot of readers stopped following the tag and just relied on subscriptions and word of mouth. If I'd started in the earlier days of the fandom, when more readers were checking the main tag and also more readers were interested in a wider variety of content, it probably would have looked very different.) Most of the time I'm ok with this. I write boutique fic for a select audience. There's nothing wrong with that.
But it throws me off a bit when I see just how different some other people's expectations are, even within the same fandom. Like I'll see people reblog posts about how you should write for yourself, not care about kudos, etc etc, and I'll think "that's easy for you to say, you're extremely popular" and then apparently they don't think they're extremely popular, because their idea of what "popular" means is orders of magnitude larger than mine. And then the brain weasels creep in and say things like "maybe you aren't writing boutique fic for a select audience. Maybe it's just that no one gives a shit about your fic and you just make yourself look foolish by pretending you have any significance in this fandom" and I have to go read comments until they go away.

AO3 Search is Awkward, Actually
Whenever someone criticizes AO3's search for being difficult or confusing, there are a lot of long-time users that chime in that it's the best and not confusing at all and even going so far as to belittle the people that don't get it, and I find that a very exhausting and just sad that new user's frustrations are blown off instead of maybe attempting to see things from their perspective. Because the truth is, while AO3's filtered works system is great, actually getting to that point is not as simple as some make it out to be. Allow me to extrapolate.
Say you've never used Archive Of Our Own before and you decide you want to browse it for the first time. In this day and age, I think many new user's instinct is to search for the tags to go directly to the themes you're interested in, like so:
Tumblr media
Searching via Works has way more options out the gate and has filtering right from the start, but most new users, especially ones that grew up on tumblr or tiktok, are far more familiar with Tags when it comes to finding their way around, so this is the section they're more likely going to gravitate towards from the list of options. That's easy enough to find, sure, but then the weird part is when you start searching for stuff.
Tumblr media
So naturally what's the first thing you do? Type in what you think is an approximation for a tag that should be there and hope that you'll get a set of options that is close to what you want.
But instead, what you find is this:
Tumblr media
This is an awkward and confusing list, mostly full of weird variations of the same thing. Even with AO3's tag wrangling, there are loose-ends everywhere, especially for less popular entries. Now it is only by sheer luck that the most populated tag, Freeform: Teratophilia ‎(3364), is at the very bottom of my screen cap. I only manage that because I expanded my browser and it just so happened to be at the bottom of the list. But in many cases, the tag you're looking for might not as easily be found.
For those experienced with AO3, you would know that the most populated tag is clearly the one you're looking for. But for a brand new user to the service, it is very easy for that to be drowned out in the sea of information that has been presented and be overwhelmed and confused. And this is only for a small tag, in the case of much more variable tags, the Most Populated tag that you're actually looking for could be buried on the third or fourth or even thirtieth page. For anyone that doesn't know what they're looking for this is the point where they try one more thing to attempt to make sense of what they're seeing.
Tumblr media
They go to the Sort By menu and look for a 'most populated' option but there is none. Just Name and Date Created. There is no ability to sort by 'most populated' tags, which would make it much easier for a person brand new to the service to find what they're looking for. If you're lucky enough that the thing you're looking for has been around a long time, then Date Created might help you find the tag, but this is not always the case. (this has happened to me, many times.) This is probably about the time any new user with no one to help them, will give up. This is the first hiccup in the issues with AO3's search.
But say they find the tag they're looking for, Date Created sorting can account for most tags, sure, maybe I'm making a big deal about a fringe case. But then we get into the issue of 'what if the tag you're looking for, isn't a common tag.'
For anyone brand new to AO3 with absolutely no context for its hierarchy, will likely have no idea that AO3 has a 'Common Tag' system. I used my example of Teratophilia, not only because of my personal bias, because I knew it wasn't a common tag. For those not familiar with what a Common Tag is on AO3, it is an 'Official' tag, as in officially recognized by AO3 and are most commonly media/character with some significant concepts thrown in. These tags are not only marked in bold in a list making them visibly distinct, but they also offer the robust filtering features that AO3 is known for.
When you look up something that might be highly populated, but isn't a common tag, you don't have the luxury of the tag being made more visible by a bold style, making it even more difficult to pick out from a list.
But say you find your tag easily enough, and you click on it. You are now presented with the results of the tag, but to anyone new, you'll see that you are offered no option to filter the works under that tag because you have learned the tag you want to search, isn't a 'common tag'. Without any context for what this means, it can be confusing to know what to do with this information.
Tumblr media
They're going to see this page and go 'where's the filtering everyone's talking about, what the heck is a common tag' and get frustrated. Maybe they'll weed through the list presented but others may just leave the site because they don't want to manually search that many pages. They don't have the context to know that their best next step should be to search a much more general tag, and then refine it down from there because they don't know the difference between a 'Common Tag' or 'Additional Tag' and how to find it.
For many long-time users of AO3, they may be quick to point out that AO3 does have a glossary and an FAQ, and that new users should start there to sort out any confusion. But the glossary isn't much help when it lists the term 'canonical tag' but any new user's introduction to the tag will usually happen when they click on their first non-canonical tag and see that the description uses the term 'common tag' as shown above. This makes it inconsistent to anyone not familiar, where to start when looking up this information to find context.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If your first encounter with the concept of the 'Canonical Tag' is to see it referred to as a 'Common Tag', but you go to look for it in the FAQ and you don't see 'Common Tag' in the list, you're going to feel like you've hit another dead end. This will likely be another point where new users stop using the site.
This means that if someone's first experience with the site is looking up something not popular and not 'canonical', they're going to get lost very quickly, and the usual means that they could have used to find their way around, simply aren't there. This is made more confusing/complicated by inconsistent use of terms on the site, and lack of using both terms on the glossary. This is very easily and simply solved by changing the glossary entry to Canonical Tag (Common Tag), as well as providing direct links to the Glossary/FAQ sections when searching.
But that's not the only issue, say if you do actually click on one of the 'Canonical Tags' for the first time, this is what you're greeted with:
Tumblr media
Especially for some of the most populated tags, you are presented an absolutely overwhelming amount of visual noise and no actual search results. Long time users will know the next step will be to click on Filter Works, but anyone new will likely find that small text downed out by the absolutely massive wall of synonymous tags, along with the list of subtags that follow below it. New users probably haven't learned the buttons at the top right corner also link to using the tag in a search.
It can be very strange to a new user how clicking on a non-canonical tag will result in getting a listing of works right away, but clicking on a canonical tag will not. I'm aware that this because the tag page is a landing page to provide additional information/context, but there isn't even a description on this page for what the tag means so it doesn't even serve that purpose. I am of the opinion that the sections such as synonymous tags and subtags, should be collapsible areas to reduce the visual noise that would be off-putting to most new users. (though I'm of the opinion that clicking on the tag from the search should go straight to the filter works, but that's me.)
And a quick search side-note, when using the search in the top right, it does an 'any field' word search for everything in the archive, it doesn't bring the user to a tag list like many tag-oriented new users might have expected.
Tumblr media
Using the Edit Search will help refine if from there, but it would be nice if there was something to indicate 'hey there's a tag under this thing you searched' to help with refining the search, better.
Once you get past the hurdle of understanding what you're even looking at when using the search, AO3 does indeed have some great filtering features that still does not seem to be matched anywhere else. But that hurdle is not exactly intuitive and I do think there needs to be some shaping up on AO3's part. (Among other things, but that's not this post. I am only here to point out issues with the function of its search and navigation choices.)
If you run into someone saying that AO3's search is bad or confusing, this is probably what they're talking about. If you want new users to use and enjoy the service, you need to listen to them and try to figure out where they're coming from instead of blowing them off. Because yes, in fact, AO3's search is very awkward and confusing to anyone not familiar with how it functions and belittling others for not getting it, is not helpful.

With a lot of people slowly testing out the tumblr waters again, especially artists, here's some old, new, and underutilized features the site offers that I've found super useful and always appreciate personally when looking through artist's blogs. (See under the cut for more)
Have your own custom page setup:
To have your own blog page setup first make sure to enable your page under blog settings > enable custom theme
Tumblr media
This lets users view your page at {username}.tumblr.com instead of tumblr.com/{username}
On this view you can add tabs that link out to your specific tags, custom sub-pages, or even other sites (eg. I have tabs that link out to my art tag as well as my AO3 page)
You also get control over setting up your own theme, which does require you to configure your HTML but luckily there are tons of free themes others have made that are as simple as pasting in the code then using the configurations
My personal preferred way to find themes is to navigate to the theme-maker's page from a blog I already enjoy and follow, usually there's a source/credit hyperlinked somewhere on the page (for example, the one I'm using is linked in the bottom right)
This also lets users access your blog's archive (see the next point)
Use tags and also enable featured tags:
If you think of your blog, especially as an artist, as an archive/portfolio it helps if a user can easily find all of your old art and the best way to do this is to tag all of your art
A lot of people simply use "my art" but some use other tags more specific to their username, either one works as long as you consistently tag only your work with it
Fandom tags/OC tags/theme tags/etc also all help with this, if a user is interested in all your content for X fandom or of X original character, this lets them easily find all posts for that fandom or character
You'll also show up in the global tags this way, but only the first handful of tags count towards this, so make sure to prioritize putting label tags you want for global searches first
Featured tags take this to the next level and are a relatively new feature that not many people take advantage of customizing, but you can set your featured tags to whatever you want, and this allows a user to then go into your archive and sort on these specific tags so now they can easily scroll through the tag in your archive without having to manually go page by page
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Have a large set of posts already but they don't have the right tags? Mass Post Editor is your best friend here - it opens the archive view for you and lets you click on all the posts you want to update and edit the tags in the archive view across all of them at the same time
Tumblr media
Blaze and Customize visibility per-post
Blaze is a new-ish feature that lets any user on the platform "blaze" your post which will push it onto the dashboards of X number of random users - there is no algorithm to determine who gets to see this posts
Blaze was originally original-poster permitted only, meaning only the person who made the post could blaze it but they've since updated it so anyone can Blaze any post that doesn't have it disallowed - you can update the global blaze setting for all posts on your blog to allow or disallow it in your blog settings (by default this ENABLED)
Tumblr media
Sometimes you just want to make a personal post that you don't want going outside of the scope of your blog, you can now set whether or not a post can be reblog for each post
Tumblr media
Set this to "No one" if you don't want it reblogged, similarly, disable blaze on the post
On the flip side, if you want your post to be shared, make sure this is set to "Anyone (on Tumblr)"! Otherwise your posts will never get spread and never be seen, which is fine for personal use and personal posts, but if you actually want others to find and share your content, make sure this isn't set to "No one"

Let me tell youuu! It not only haunted me, I think it saved my fcking life.
In 2020 I came back to fandom spaces thanks to the It movies.
It all started in twitter. I was lurking, looking for memes and I found one of those screenshot fics accounts and began reading Turtle Creek. (that format was insane! i kinda of miss it tho).
I eventually ended up in ao3. The same person who was making some of the twitter accounts wrote some fics there.
I kept going through twitter cause, again, that format of screenshot stories was addictive and I found a very interesting fic.
This screenshot fic was a short story that was all text messages until the last chapter. In this, Eddie text a wrong number and it turns out to be Richie, but obviously they don't know, but they keep texting and im not going to spoil cause when I tell you this one is GOOD im not joking.
That fic becames one of my absolute favourites even after finishing the story, I absolutely love it.
After covid (around 2021) I say goodbye to It and go back to normal boring life.
You see, for the longest time I lived like a closeted fan. Im not sure what made me so reluctant to be active in fandom but I just couldn't. I didn't want to be a fan and I was afraid to interact with communities. I didn't like or shared or comment, I was like a ghost, I read and I left. My close friends knew what I liked and once in a while I talked about how much I loved the It movies, but specifically online I didn't want anything to do with fandom, so when covid stopped I thought the logical thing to do was to just, go back to living "normal life".
I started uni and time passed. Then, around march of 2023 I was looking for something in the IG stories archive and find a story I made with a Pennywise filter and thought "aw! the It fandom, nice ❤".
A week later I can't stop thinking about It. Im in class and I remember a meme i've seen in twitter 3 years ago and I can't stop laughing. I find an old drive file filled with It memes I download in 2020. I go to twitter to see if I can find Turtle Creek and it's gone. I don't remember any of the user names of the people who wrote those other screenshot fics. I never followed anyone, I never interacted with anyone, I don't remember fics names or accounts, I only have some memes and art, some from artists that they don't even have accounts anymore.
The thing is, I was entering depression again at that time. Just like in 2020, the It fandom was holding my hand and telling me "hey, here is something lovely for you to enjoy today, life isn't horrible!" so, I relented. I came back to tumblr, I opened an account on ao3 and started looking for new fics, cause for some reason I thought all the fics I read on twitter were lost forever (so dramatic lol).
Months passed and istg if it wasn't for It fics im sure I would've dropped out of uni. I was so fcking depressed, the only thing that motivated me was reading a new one shot or next chapter and I used it as a reward to study. I used it as a reward to get out of bed sometimes. When I was really depressed I thought 'but I want to know what happens in the next chapter' 'I want to read one more fic by x author' 'maybe x abandoned fic finally gets an update'.
Around september I was scrolling through the reddie tag and I find this fic, 'Wrong Number' by Blissymbolics (amazing writer!!) that sounds really interesting. Is a story in which Eddie texts a stranger by accident and it turns out to be Richie... guys... I cried re-reading that fic lmao. I can't explain exactly why, it felt like finding an old friend on a crowded street and giving them a big hug. I was in a call with friend like "DUDE I FOUND IT!! I FOUND THAT AWESOME FIC I READ IN TWITTER!"
After that I think something clicked, I was like, yeah I love this place, I want to be part of the communities, I want to interact and leave comments, the writers deserve to know how much I love their works, how they make my day better every time they post.
So yeah, it haunted me, and it saved me. It literally saved me.
has anyone else ever had a fanfic that just… haunts them? like it’s been months and maybe even years since you read it, but it just lingers with you and you can never truly leave behind the imprint it made on you? and maybe it’s just a single line, one sentence that you can’t shake off, that takes up residence in your mind and stays there, feeding into your psyche and subtly influencing your brainspace and maybe even your writing or other works?
