I unfortunately saw something I didn't want to see and that was my last straw. I'm fucking doing this.

Let's establish this first. Alastor is stated in the show to be asexual that is not up to discussion. He is also very heavily implied in the same conversation to be aromatic. 'An Ace in the hole' being used in context of him being with Charlie is also implying his aromanticism.

If that's not enough then here is Viv speaking about his romantic orientation. It's pretty clear despite the fact that afterwards she said it's okay to headcanon whatever (it's not but I will get o that later) that he is written purely as an aro ace character.

On top of that going by Alastor's interaction with Angel from the pilot and the first episode it is clear that he is sex repulsed. Not only that but on the fandom website he is stated to be touch averse with two sources which you can check out on the website.

Now we established that Alastor is canonically Asexual, Aromantic, Sex Repulsed and Touch Averse

As I also am all of the above I'll try to explain everything to the best of my ability as simply as I can.

Aromanticism and Asexuality.

I'm probably targeting the audience that knows those terms but regardless I will explain it anyway.

Aromantic - people that experience little to no romantic attraction towards any gender

Asexual - people that experience little to no sexual attraction towards any gender.

Little to no

Asexuality and aromanticism are spectrums in which people can feel certain attractions towards people but those attractions are less occurring or are defined by personal connection.

However some people are at the end of the spectrum, they never felt attraction and that's valid. Alastor was stated to be aroace he wasn't written as demi or as gray he was written as aroace as in the end of the spectrum. His repulsion and not giving shit about romance or sex speaks for itself.

Representation

I do understand that everyone wants to be represented but it's so important to understand that aroace people are one of the most underrepresented queer groups in the media.

And I'm not here to scream about how I want my fav character to be just like me I don't care for it I'm way too confident in my orientation to rely on that however I'm tired of explaining to people what asexuality and aromanticism is just to receive 'are you sure' or 'you'll change your mind' or 'its not real' or the community favourite 'you'll find the right person' no I won't I'm not looking thank you very much (I just smile and nod to be polite and I'm sick of it).

'Harmless' buts like: 'He might be on the spectrum', 'AroAce people can still feel attraction' hurt the final outcome for all the people on the spectrum not only strictly aroaces because it allows people to write one shots with 'Demi Alastor' that falls in love in 2000 words because he is 'demi' (spoiler alert: they don't understand what that label means). It's just a cover, an opening, sneaky way to disregard his orientation, feel good about themselves and move on. Newsflash there is no moving on for aroace people it's our life.

Shipping

Shipping is just harmless fun right? Usually yes but not in this case. In the same way its not okay to ship gay characters with genders they are not attracted to.

It's erasure and since there is much less people identifying on aro/ace spectrums then there is gay or bi people our voices are being silenced. Not to mention that gay people received support from entire LGBTQIA+ community over the years in contrast to aro/ace specs who to this day are told that we are 'not queer enough' or 'not oppressed enough' often by other queer people.

And finally... FINALLY we get cannon Aro/Ace character that is clearly not interested in romance and sex. Character that beats stereotypes of boring and timid aro/ace people and what's the first people do? They ship him. Alastor's storyline provides so many points to be explored like 'what is his backstory', ' what's about his deal', ' how does he fit in in the found family trope' , 'does he care about hotel guests' yet people choose to write about the only thing that he is not interested in. As a heavily repulsed person that used to be horrified about the fact that I'll have to fall in love with somebody at some point before I found out what aro/ace is I find it repulsive and trust me he would too.

But Viv said it's okay!

Its the same point once again. What if Viv said that it's okay to ship gay Angel with woman. She doesn't have authority to say shit like that.

Queerplatonic relationships

I can't tell you not to do it I don't think he would be necessary interested in it but for fuck sake do your research and try to understand what queerplatonic means before you use it as a cover to shamelessly ship him. Respect the fact that he is sex repulsed and touch averse and you're fine.

Why can't you just avoid it?

First of all I shouldn't have to. Alastor's orientation should be respected in the fandom like any other orientation is. Second of all I've tried. I tried to only look up AroAce Alastor tag I've blocked over 80 people on tumblr alone (I just counted) to avoid to see anything that could trigger me and I'm not talking about slightly shippy posts or fanarts I'm talking about full blown disregard towards his orientation. Guess what it didn't work!

Archive of our own where do I start. I've used this website for over a decade and I could probably count days I didn't go there on my fingers. I'm fluent in AO3 I know which tags I should block. I know how to skim thorough the summary and tags to see if I'm interested. I've seen shit I'm a shipper I've been on ao3 for ten years but never had to mentally prepare myself to face queerphobia as I click on the tab.

there is more ff with Alastor/reader (disgusting) than there is Alastor with his canon orientation and to play the devils advocate for arophobic people there is more Angel/Alastor then his stated in the show sexuality. I don't think the tweet should be taken as "nooo alastor being aromantic is deconfirmed :(" because it moreso puts emphasis on his asexuality being 100% undeniably canon.

I still think the context in which alastor's asexuality is confirmed in-canon ALSO implies aromanticism because the context which rosie jokes about is alastor dating charlie and she basically says "HAHAHA jk I know you'd never do that because I know you're aroace! (ace in the hole)", of course there are issues in that, they use ace here to describe an aromantic situation, which isn't good because the two get mixed up as it is but it's honestly better than nothing, most aspec characters don't even get THAT

He was turned at the age of forty one, making him one of the oldest turned vampires within The Volturi of all time. Corin found it quite curious that he had survived the transformation when taking into consideration his physical state.

Eleazar is 6'1, or in other words; 1.85 meters tall. This makes him just as tall as Caius (though Caius has a lot more brawn).

Personally I headcanon him to have a rather deep and soft speaking voice, the kind of cadence you just want to listen to for hours on end.

According to others he smells like white tea, lilacs and cedar wood.

It was Afton and Demetri who stumbled across Eleazar while on a job in Constantinople in 1502. He made the mistake of pointing out there was no point in Afton trying to hide from the vampire they were tracking due to the target also carrying a gift. Eleazar was promptly invited to Volterra, with no chance to refuse.

While his gift can be quite useful, it all depends on what kind of emotional state Eleazar is in at the time; if he is under great stress he might not be able to identify anything. Because of this, Eleazar was very rarely sent out into the field on dangerous missions. Instead, Aro used him as a charming liaison out in the field.

He is a fantastic dancer, ever a popular partner at Volturi Balls, even in the modern day!

As a human he had three younger siblings he helped raise, this shaped him into a quite caring, responsible and dutiful person. It has made his work as the head of a coven easier after leaving The Volturi with Carmen in tow.

Carlisle and Eleazar have similar stories when it comes to how they were turned, it was part of why the two of them got along so well when the good doctor visited Volterra. Eleazar has no idea who his sire is, only that it was a wayward vampire running around the Hungarian countryside in 1492. (There are rumours that The Romanians were traveling through the area at the time, but we do not talk about that too loudly.)

Has Caius on speed dial because he is one of the people who have reported the most sightings of COTM in the modern day.

While he is now a practicing vegetarian, Eleazar will drink human blood if he is in dire need of sustenance; or if he needs his strength in a way animal blood cannot replicate.

Within The Volturi, Eleazar got along well with; Demetri, Corin, Felix, Afton, Santiago and Aro.

Feänor is an easy one, so we're gonna go with Nolofinwë. 1) Fingolfin translates to Finwënolofinwë. Not addressed in the published Silmarillion, the Shibboleth of Feänor adds great context and character depth. 2) "High princes were Fëanor and Fingolfin, the elder sons of Finwë, honoured by all in Aman; but now they grew proud and jealous each of his rights and his possessions." THEY grew proud and jealous of EACH of his rights!!

Whatever his motivations are, (he thought he was a better choice, he wanted to prove to finwe he was better than feänor, whatever) nolo WANTED that crown, and he wanted it LOUDLY.

It's the Orc Bank. I headcanon the Orc Bank. There's this one post that sums it up really well, but I can't find it, so I'll try to sum it up. The theory is that only Eru can create souls. Morgoth can only corrupt them. Given that Orcs exist well into the Third Age, there's a couple options.

1. Modern Orcs have no souls (doubtful)

2. Eru creates Orc souls (also doubtful)

3. Maia have the power to corrupt souls (more believable, but logistically how would that work? Sauron tortures *every* orc? When does an Orc stop being an Orc then?)

4. The Orc souls are Recycled into the Orc Bank.

4) With regards to question three, in the (honestly, and sadly, unlikely) ( completely forgot what word I was going to type, and It as too much trouble to type that so I'm just going to use another word that won't flow as well) situation (I'm so unhappy with this word, my stomach is turning something fierce, man.) that you DO go the standard "with the other book as a very, very, loose guideline) Would you go the route of OYH or would make an entirely new plot?

Also, if you do go with the same general outline, (which is unlikely since Irina isn't with Laurant in newmoon but with Charlie, so there's no bitter feelings and she won't immediately go to the kings before she's heard Carlisle's explanation.) How would you make that work?

5) I know you said that if you do make a fourth book you would just use the dhampire from OYH, Elisha, does that still reign true? Or are you planning to make a new character entirely?

6) If you do make a fourth, and go the OYH route, would you still make Elisha Emse's mate, like in OYH? Or will you go with Garette?

7) Also, since you have previously made an ff about Garette and Bella having a brother-sister type friendship would we see that and get to see Garette claim her as his sister and charlie as his father, and everyone goes along with it? (Honestly, I REALLY want this to happen, especially since I've spent the last hour scrolling through your tumbler and stumbled upon the 'I'm older than my father' post.)

8) Really, all these questions border on the main one of "is there going to be a breaking dawn/part 4-5 (depending) in your rewrite?" but if you do, would Carlisle buy Isle Bella as a honeymoon present of would that be in the oneshots book (that you'll hopefully be writing after this is over) as like a "Have fifteenth anniversary" thing?

9) Are you going to write a book full of random one-shots you couldn't fit into your story? I REALLY HOPE SO.

"He's making an army," Or just straight up CANNON!Aro with his need for power be like "It's an immortal child, and it needs to be destroyed." But really be thinking, "They're growing too large, already their numbers rival our own, they must be put down! This is the perfect time!" Like the (cowardly) power-hungry and villainess we all know and love. Kinda.

I basically want breaking dawn and the third (Do you count Charlie's book as part of Bella's story or as a stand-alone since you weren't really progressing the plot very much (also a very good way to have a time skip in your main)?) isn't even done yet.

I don't know if you can tell, but I've been reading this series for three days straight (new fan!) and just started your OYH series and I'm just filled with a desire right now. Like, I typically hate sex scenes in a twilight book (but that's because I was a child when these movies came out (saw them all in theatre!) and still was when I read the books, so Bella is SACRED lol, and It just makes me uncomfortable to imagine her in those positions (it's like a trauma okay?) but I really enjoyed your stories (even if I basically glossed over your sex scenes and read through them quickly) and could actually sit through your sex scenes (mostly, because it wasn't INTENSE! Like, a lot of rewrites turn breaking dawn into literal Porn and sully the books for me because they basically remove a lot of plot to make room for Bella's sudden appetite, and while, yes, you gave her an appetite and... I haven't gotten an ask in a while and AJKHFJKHD Listen!! THE FACE I MADE AT HOW LONG THIS IS??? Superb!! I'm honored you've taken the time to write this all out so I'm gonna try to answer you as best as I can!!

Right now I'm 100% sure that there will be a couple of Novellas/Novelettes directly after Earthshine. The Renee Story, the Charlie Story, and the Roommate Story which all will get maybe 40k and mini plots that are far more focused than Charlie's first story. Charlie's new story will be focused on his relationship with Carlisle too, so that should be fun!

Edward having a Mate is still up in the air at the moment. Since he is still very young, I don't see the need to really give him someone so quick when other characters have waited WAAAY longer. As for who it might be, that's also still up in the air in case I want to do a short story with him that's a part of a series of Novellas after the main books

If I do make a BD rewrite IT WILL have wedding/honeymoon/surprise pregnancy then it will PRETTY MUCH go off the rails from there because the Pregnancy will be VASTLY different. Carlisle is a Doctor and Bella isn't an idiot. They won't be in Washington either.

Again. The first half will be loosely based on the book and then just go completely off the rails because, Like you said, the Volturi have brains and I LOATHE an 'idiot' plot where people are required to suddenly become stupid for the story to work. As for the OYH route, I will be borrowing a couple elements from OYH but the conflict will be very different.

Elisha is baby and there's no way I could make another Dhampir at this point. Not with how much I love him.

The aging process will work differently in this fic for Dhampirs, so this question is irrelevant since Elisha will be a child for the entire fourth book. As for when he's older, Its still up in the air for this series. He deserves to be baby and I very much dislike the trope of age faster = mentally develop faster because that's BS.

We'll see, I love Bella and Garrett, but there's A LOT I'll have to cram into the last book so we'll just see.

As much as I'd love to answer this, I'm covering the honeymoon in the fourth book so you'll see what happens in there ; )

I HAVE PLANS for random one shots. I REALLY DO. I just has so little time to work on the main story so I might write some when Earthshine is done! I have a name for the one-shot collection already too and some Ideas!

I very much plan to write the fourth book you'll be fine. Bella will not be nervous, she'll be WAY more anxious about it going right. Mostly her nerves will be from anticipation and excitement because she'll be 23 and be very secure in her forever with Carlisle.

There will be a fight in book four that will not have the Volturi turning stupid. Don't worry about how.

Charlies little story is a Novella so I don't count it as a book.... GOD hearing you plowed through the series in so short a time is MIND boggling. I get people telling me this occasionally and I NEVER stop being amazed by it!

As for the sex scenes, yeah, I didn't want this to be erotic literature. I frequently scream that 'THIS ISN'T A SMUT BOOK' because them having sex is just a normal healthy thing that happens in relationships and wanted to show that. The sex scenes I write tend to be glossed over anyways so I'm glad it was readable for you. I get feeling frustrated and wanting more plot, but there are plenty of people who prefer the very explicit smut.

If sex scenes aren't your cup of tea, that's fine. I don't view Bella as pure and innocent though. It teeters dangerously on the Madonna/Whore dichotomy to act like she is. I get wanting to preserve the innocence of your childhood through her. That's not me though. Bella/Carlisle's relationship is highly sexual in nature within SoG and that's ALRIGHT too!

“Miraak?” The first dragonborn looks up from the book he’s reading, Deathbrand, to glance at Breyth. The youngest dragonborn sits at the base of a tree, etching the blade of a newly forged nordic sword with dragon words. 

“Yes, zeymah?” the youth taps his fingers against the blade, chewing on his lip. He’s clearly got things on his mind.

“Do you feel… wrong somehow? Or is that just me?” Miraak pauses, fully turning to face his baby brother. 

“What do you mean?” the ex-champion of Hermaeus Mora asks. The last dragonborn fidgets and sheaths the half etched sword. He ruffles his hair, pulling out the tie and fixing his ponytail.

“It’s just… I don’t feel right.” Breyth slumps against the base of the large oak, waving his hands. Miraak nods, brushing a platinum blonde curl out of his eyes. 

“Yeah I’ve felt that before. You know intrinsically that inside, something isn’t right.” Breyth nods, turquoise eyes brimming with life, slit pupils blown wide with relief that he wasn’t crazy. 

“Vogevoth.” the deep rumble of the world-eater’s voice draws their attention. The gigantic black dragon touches down near the tree where the boys sit. Breyth jumps to his feet, as does Miraak. 

“Vogevoth? I don’t know that word.” the youngest dovah tilts his head. Alduin settles on the grass. 

Miraak briefly wonders if it’s a good idea to rest so close to a road, but Breyth had said very few travellers venture this close to Lake Ilinalta aside from a few hunters and bandits. Nothing they couldn’t handle.

“Disconnect.” Alduin continues. “Your souls do not match the bodies they inhabit.”

what if, the fight in apocrypha is so destructive that Mora has to cast both dragonborns back to Nirn in order the preserve his realm.

Ok ok I’m finally rewriting my long ass post, edited to be slightly shorter, about

Asexuality & Aromanticism in Old Gods of Appalachia

Alright, so, I was sold on OGA because I was told it had a canonically aroace character. I have complicated feelings about this character that I want to discuss. Potential spoilers through season 1.

First, the character is not cannonically aroace. The podcast does not use the words asexual or aromantic, and because there’s so little aspec representation out there, I personally want to hold “actually using the words” as a minimum standard.

The way we are led to read Daughter Dooley as asexual and/or aromantic is that when the evil force she’s made a deal with sends her six empty men to do whatever she wants with, she reflects that she has no use for men that way [sexually], or women for that matter. Because this podcast is set in the early 1900s, I’m inclined to accept this as evidence; the words asexual or aromantic would sound odd coming from her mouth.

While she is evidentially not interested in people sexually, she still longs to be around people. She’s a witch who draws her power from the greenery, but when the evil power tells her to go live in a village for a few months, she is overjoyed. She considers it a reward for her service. However, when she’s around people again, she finds that she literally siphons their life force, making herself younger and killing them. She narrowly avoids being present as a midwife, which the story implies would have killed the mother and child.

This means that she must live in isolation, or she will be a danger to the people around her, especially to the reproduction of humanity. I don’t really appreciate this for an aro/ace character! The lonely, long-suffering asexual or aromantic is a trope reproduced to such an extent that when aspec folk first realize their own identity, it is not uncommon to experience grief! There are some people who are happy living in isolation, and some of them are aro or ace, but people tend to view aspec identities as causing isolation. Daughter Dooley being forbidden from the human contact she longs for reinforces this belief, even if accidentally.

I love Old Gods of Appalachia, and I wholeheartedly recommend it as excellent horror writing, but I wish they’d been a little more thoughtful about their representation. I also wish fans would stop promoting the show based on its ace representation, because again, it’s not cannon, and the implications aren’t great.

Well, there's one ship I ship with clarity.

Hal and Jess.

I like the idea of Jess making Hal work for it. But also, I think Jess is too good for who he is currently.

So, right now right now I ship Hal with character development. (Also I kinda see Jess as the type to not date in highschool.)

I used to just ship the counterparts because that's simple and fun. (not Supergirl and Aqualad though) But I doubt that the show will make it anything like that. So I don't ship simp for this show anymore.

There's also hints at Babs' and Harleen having chemistry which I willfully ignored in hopes that Barry and Babs' might have a shot. I know, though, that the second something goes cannon I will abandon ship.

In other words I refuse to lead myself to heartbreak if or when Babs is matched with someone.

Uhm, I don't have anything to support the fact that Zee and Oliver should be shipped except the trope.

Man, I love the rivals to lovers trope!! Plus their banter is hilarious. Really I have no strong opinion on who they date so I'm open to anything.

Uhm, I think for representation sake it would be cool if Kara was ace/aro. But to be honest the show could set up a love triangle between Clark and Lois and Kara (obviously with the cousins fighting for Lois's affections) and I'd be all for it.

I really also got nothing for Carter and Karen... Except for the time when Karen tried to befriend him and ended up flirting. I just like their dynamic in general. Both introverts except one is intimidating and the other is a nervous wreck. There's also the trope around height difference so I'm all for that.

I think it would rock if Garth had a double life underwater and like a merfolk boyfriend. Who's hot and royalty and treats Garth like a king. But that's just me.

So... I don't ship simp- meaning I don't go crazy when I see my ship sharing the screen and psychoanalyse it so much that I twist what happened so it fits into my ship- for this show for the sake of my sanity. All the characters are amazing and flawed and two dimensional. They deserve the world!!

But there is one ship that I'm willing to risk my heart for...

I'll tell you- Giganta and Livewire.

Just look at the Superhero Shorts (can be found on YouTube) and you'll see.

Anyway, the ask was awesome and actually helped sort out what I was thinking for myself. If you have any strong opinions I'd love to hear them!!

There is a widely held misconceptions that all Aromantic identifying people lack emotion,  lack the ability to form social connections and are “loveless” in reality many Aros are capable of all these things. It varys just like they do.

A person who identifies as Aromantic  is still capable of other types of attraction, such as recognizing when a person is good-looking ― Some Aromantics get platonic crushes or "squishes", also known as platonic attraction.   Aros are capable of feeling “love”- for example Aro’s feel platonic love such as that between close friends very strongly.

On the other hand, some Aromantics may not experience platonic love or attraction, and may identify as aplatonic. Others may not desire partners of any kind, and may identify as nonamorous. Some Aromantics embrace the loveless label and reject the idea that love is necessary for happiness. want to know more? ask or research yourself. As regards me... Emotions: As certain people will tell you I am not completely emotionless as much as I have wished to be, but I do not have the same emotional map as other people do. I do my damndest not to show what little I do feel, and only those certain people have ever truly seen me with the walls down. Its debatable whether that’s because i’m Aro or because I developed a way to cope with being used and bullied when I was in school and it just stuck, either works.

Squishes: I hate the term, but if its the only way to make people differentiate and stop assuming  i’m faking and am really some sort of  straight/bi letch (naming no names) . I will happily stand here and say that my admiration and ‘love’ of characters and actors counts as ‘squishes’ even if the word makes me want to murder people when they say it in connection with me, its too... sappy, personally I prefer the more formal term of “platonic attraction.” Or “admiration based attraction.”

And yes I do consider my small inner pack to be my “platonic love” because I am fiercely protective of them, and I’d like to think they can read that in me under all walls and shields i hold up on a daily basis out in ‘the world’   If I count you as pack, understand that it is not just me using a term from a fandom, it means that you have done something, been through something with me that makes me admire you, and that it is ONLY ever going to be platonic no matter what is said in society.

Fandom: To Date I can't say there are any cannon characters in fandom that i can name who have openly come out as being Aromantic, but in the Shadowhunter chronicles (mainly The Mortal Instruments) Cassandra Clare wrote Vampire Raphael Santiago as Aromantic Asexual, and while this was watered slightly when the show was made and Raphael only came out as Asexual he remains my go to when asked. Though as with most geeks I have several head cannons  that I could wax lyrical about _____

Was looking at Meet the Robinsons stuff for an image edit hopefully forthcoming and...anyone wanna see my collection of Robinsons headcanons? Because every so often, I remember this film exists and also that I made, like, a slew of backstories for these characters

-I don’t have much to say about Bud and Lucille since they’re kind of what you see on the tin. Same with Lewis/Cornelius, Wilbur, and Carl.

-Franny has been dating Cornelius since the science fair. She actually went through high school and college at the expected rate while Cornelius blew right through college before Franny even graduated high school. She felt self-conscious about this for a long time, but Cornelius never saw her as less intelligent and always loved her. She eventually found out that she set herself up with Cornelius via time loop and her only reaction was “See? I’m ALWAYS RIGHT.”

-Gaston Framagucci knows so much about cannons because he used to develop weaponry for the military. After his designs killed civilians, he underwent a mental breakdown, walking out of his position and vowing never to hurt anyone else again. Cornelius invited him into his house with open arms so as not to leave him alone during his depression. He got better over time. He’s also gay and very shy around handsome men, which is why you never see him with a romantic partner. Franny’s still trying to set him up on the ultimate blind date.

-Art Framagucci has wanted to deliver pizza all his life. Delivering pizza is his passion. But delivering pizza doesn’t earn you a living wage. Once Cornelius realized he was making more money than he could spend on himself reasonably, he immediately invited Art to move into the house as well so Art could have food and lodging paid for without having to give up his passion. He doesn’t have a partner because he just hasn’t gotten around to looking for one (might be aro).

-Both Art and Gaston thought of Franny’s biology work as “nerd stuff” before Cornelius started coming over as a teen and giving them a double dose of the smart stuff, at which point Gaston realized ballistic physics interested him and Art, despite not being a scientist in any sense, had a lot of respect for most fields. They still liked to tease Cornelius a lot, though - never in a bullying way, but affectionately.

-Petunia Robinson died in a motorcycle accident. Fritz wears the puppet because he can’t bear to think of her as being gone. Her personality, while alive, was as boisterous and confrontational as Fritz makes the puppet - she and Fritz were always fighting like a married couple and very opposites-attract.

-Tallulah Robinson is trans. (Yes, I thought of this because of the voice - and kept it that way because I just liked the idea.) She told Cornelius before she told her own parents because Cornelius always was the one to be accepting of new ideas. When she did come out publicly to the family, no one judged. She’s not very science-oriented at all, but she loves fashion design, and she made that skyscraper-hat herself. Her closet is actually packed with really avant-garde clothing she has made herself. Her dream is to become a big name in the fashion circuit. And also to never need to take off her roller skates ever. She actually has held a part-time position as a waitress in a roller-skate café (I actually saw this idea on another Tumblr post a long time ago but can’t remember who it was, so if it’s you, thank you; I accept it!)

-Laszlo is similar to Tallulah in that he’s more artistically oriented than scientifically. He didn’t actually make his paint device; that was Cornelius. Laszlo loves to experiment with paint styles, but is one of those people who thinks there’s a very blurry line between “graffiti” and “public art.” He’s gotten some citations for “masterpieces” he doesn’t deny having painted on the side of the hospital. (Also, if you misgender his sister, he will squirt red paint into your eyes.)

-Though Laszlo and Tallulah seem to be at odds almost constantly, they are a dynamic duo and love each other very much when the chips are down.

-Joe Robinson is nonverbal but actually is very eloquent with the written word. Billie made such a good match for him because she didn’t mind doing the talking for two and he loves listening to her. He writes her the most beautiful love poetry in the world.

-Billie Robinson is autistic and trains are her special interest. She met Joe through being contracted by Cornelius for a monorail project for the city; she came to the house for business dinners and Joe stopped by the office to visit Cornelius a few times. She’s also asexual and Joe is completely accepting of this.

-Mike Yagoobian is a close family friend. He actually has made it into a local baseball league, with prospects at the Major League, adding the athletics field to the Robinson deck. While he is no longer evil (or, more accurately, has never been evil), he’s still that much of a goofball. Wilbur, Tallulah, and Laszlo all call him “Uncle Goob” and he loves spoiling them with candy and other fun things tailored to their interests (like fancy new shoes for Tallulah and bright paints for Laszlo).

-Lefty is another of Franny’s biological creations. He’s very close to her and she sometimes treats him like a big baby.

-The gag about Spike and Dmitri being total enigmas is so funny that I actively refuse to come up with any backstory or explanation as to who they are or why they’re there. They just showed up one day and the others made food for them and now they won’t leave the pots.

It’s my experience with any emotional issue I have that resolving it is 75% figuring what on earth it even is that I’m upset about (which usually requires going to the pain of actually talking it through with someone; hello I’m an extroverted feeler) and 25% actually working on the problem.  In other words: figuring it out is the hard part.  Actually, a lot of the stress and angst evaporates once I pin down the problem.

That doesn’t mean it’s all resolved just from understanding myself a little better.  There’s still work to do.  But clarity brings a lot of peace, you know?

Good Omens was released a tiny bit more than two months ago.  It’s hard to believe it’s been that long... and also hard to believe it’s only been that long.  I watched it all in one day because I wanted that first viewing to be mine- I didn’t want to share it.  I knew, even then, that I was going to be a bit... touchy... about the shipping of the main characters.  Not because I felt that anyone was wrong to ship them, but because they’re a pair I ship very specifically.  (Which is not something I do overly much, I tend to be pretty open about my ships.  Not just in a ship-and-let-ship way, but in the way that I multi-ship, myself.  Tenth doctor, for example, I ship with four different characters.  Even though the main one I blog about is Rose.  I have two anti-ships, but only one of those actually bothers me to the extent that I have the tags blocked- and that’s more because the other character disgusts me than an overt problem with the ship itself.)

And, not just that, I ship them as being a similar kind of queer to my own.  So, they’re dear to my heart.  I see them as ace, as I am myself.  I see them as nonbinary, like me.  As beings somewhere outside the human realm, I don’t think they have to follow human friend/romance rules, and that’s a relief to me.  Because I have an incredibly difficult time understanding where all those lines are.

I have a lot of myself tied up in these characters, okay?  I related to The Doctor, yes.  I’ve related to a lot of characters.  But... not like this. 

And I have felt, predominantly, unwelcome in the fandom.  In the fandom’s defense, a lot of my emotional reaction was from the initial round of “you either ship them or you’re homophobic” that was aimed at not just other members of the fandom, but the author of the story himself.  But, in doing so, people alienated aces, aros, and nonbinary folks.  It’s not just me.  I do understand that this was not everyone’s opinion, and that even if it was it wasn’t intended this way...  But, it was a loud enough message that I shut every related tag down for over a month, and still have them filtered.  I’m one that’s pretty stable in my identity, but I felt banished for it.  I felt I wasn’t queer enough for a space that I wanted to occupy- one that was supposed a queer space, itself.  

And, I let it fester.

That festering bled over in to my tumblr home fandom: David Tennant.  I dunno if anyone noticed, but I haven’t celebrated Tennant Tuesday in weeks.  I mean, a lot of it was tied in with GO, anyway, and I was trying to avoid that.  But, the constant barrage of how slutty he and all his characters are... just grated me to the point that I wanted to find a hole.  That hole was pulling out of it almost entirely.  I’m trying to rally, it’s just taking time.

But still, there was more to it...  I was getting increasingly frustrated with myself because of how upset I was.  And how much that upset was spreading in to other fandom areas that I love.  I didn’t understand it as I have always been a “don’t like, keep scrolling” or blacklist kind of person.  And, my goodness, I do want fluff from this pairing!  But every time I put my toe in the GO fandom sandbox it was akin to being lit on fire.  And not in a slow burn, this is fun suffering kind of way.

It occurred to me a week or so ago what it was that was bothering me: I am assumed to be courting whoever I’m friends with.  Sure, laugh it up, but I’m serious.  I’m assumed to be in a romantic relationship with my married best friend nearly every time we have a day out.  From clerks in stores to kids on the street to waiters at restaurants.  I’m not insulted by the insinuation.  My best friend is my best friend for a reason- she’s a phenomenal person and I’m very lucky to have her in my life.  We don’t even correct them most of the time, anymore.  That doesn’t make it any less exhausting sometimes.  It doesn’t do anything to make me less paranoid about, not just our friendship, but every friendship I have.  In my first years at my workplace I was assumed to be sleeping with multiple married women.  How people came to that conclusion, to this day, perplexes me.  Here I was going home to tea and TV and I was supposedly out dallying with these women behind their husband’s backs!  Even now, I’m hyper aware of some of my friendships with married friends... Because their SOs have made comments... maybe joking, maybe not... that nice things I’ve done for them is me coming on to them.  Please, I’m just a genuinely nice person who likes doting on people I care about.

It really fucking sucks that my friendships are misread.  I have spent a large portion of my life just not understanding romance.  Not knowing how to engage in it.  Not knowing where the lines are.  Not understanding what might be expected of me- worrying about that.  I haven’t really had those kinds of connections, guys.  I’ve been in love, yes, a couple of times.  But, it’s never been more than a confession that’s either rejected outright or... a slow dissolution of what used to be a cherished friendship.  I feel an enormous amount of love for the people in my life, but when it comes to expressing it in any kind of romantic way... I am just at a loss.  I’ve always kind of chalked this up to being queer and having a late start, but sometimes I wonder if I’ll ever figure it out.

But if there’s one thing I know, I know how to love my friends.  Or, at least, I think I do.  And my friends don’t seem to mind.  It’s the way that it’s labeled from the outside that bothers me.

And, that brings me full circle to my point: the thing that bothered me was that I saw these two romantically challenged ace/enby characters and I thought “omg that’s me!”  Then I saw people shipping them sexually and that was okay!  Ship whatever you want.  But, then I saw that if you didn’t ship them that way it was homophobic.  It was wrong.  How could you see it anyway but gay?  Yes, QPRs have their place, but this isn’t it (something I actually saw in someone’s tags!).

I was gutted.  I understand why now.  People ship me and my close friends together all the time, friends.  It makes people really happy to do so.  They’re getting rep in public.  They think it’s sweet.  It makes them smile.  It makes them engage socially with us when they might not otherwise.  It gets us nice tables at restaurants so we “can see one another better.”

But we’re not romantically involved.  No matter how much the public may enjoy imagining us being so.  We have always been and will always be the best of friends.

Am I right to be mad at the whole fandom for how much this hurt? No.  Absolutely not.  And I have not, at any time, been mad at everyone.  I can separate my own feelings from the situation.  To be honest, I don’t even remember who made some of the comments that hurt me to begin with and I’ll never try to find out.  I’m not in any of this to start arguments or sling mud.  I’m in the fandom life for fun, to escape from real life for a bit, and to make friends if I can.

I say all of this mostly for my own mental health: I want to share it.  I want to be understood.  And, if there’s anyone out there who feels like me: I want them to know I understand them, too.  It’s not just you.  You’re not alone. 

And I also want to explain that coming to these conclusions and talking about them has made it a bit easier to pat at the sand in the Good Omens sandbox.  I’ve been poking and prodding as I feel like I can.  So, you’ll likely see some GO stuff on my blog.  I’ve still got everything filtered at the moment because I’m letting it in, as I said, as I feel like I can.  All at once feels like it might squash me again and I don’t want to ruin the progress I’ve already made.

I guess I’ll end this by saying that I loved GO the book.  I loved the series.  I’m eternally grateful for Neil Gaiman and how he’s continually put his foot down that we can all make of it what we like: that’s the fandom’s toybox.  The only things that are cannon are the words in black and white and that’s all he’ll comment on.  They can continue to be your romantic gay ship.  They can continue to be my ace/enby QPR.  We can all play in this massive sandbox together.  Just... pardon my bandaged wounds and my being a bit shy.  It’s taken me a while to get up the nerve to be here.
