@ieatgrass see this is what i and @blinday were getting at with saying that there is racism in the episode but aang isn't racist. in-universe, it's totally understandable that vegetarian aang is a little put off by animal skins and that those feelings would be amplified by feeling excluded. it's just that indigenous people and their food and hunting practices are often seen as "savage" and "barbaric" and the way aang's discomfort is portrayed plays into that. like they named the water tribe food after a widely disliked food and had the bearskin rug scare momo, our friendly animal sidekick we do not want to meet that fate. we end up sympathizing with aang partly because of cultural biases about these things even if in-universe his actions aren't really rooted in racism

the depiction of the water tribe in "bato of the water tribe" is interesting because aang is pretty...antagonistic...towards a lot of water tribe things and we're obviously meant to sympathize with that to some degree. naming the water tribe dish after prunes is a clear signal to the kid audience that This Food Is Icky And Weird and aang is correct to dislike it. aang's disgust at the furs plays on the mainstream american squeamishness about animal slaughter. it's kind of a racist framing.

but i also think that accusing aang the character of being racist is kind of missing the point. the point is that aang has lost his community and culture and all he has is sokka and katara. knowing that sokka and katara have a community and a culture they could go back to without him scares him. so he resents the signifiers of that culture, and more importantly the way that they in their eagerness to reconnect with it shut him out of the conversation.

and the fact that they ultimately choose aang over reconnecting with their father and other members of the community doesn't mean aang is portrayed as unquestionably correct or that they're portrayed as wrong for connecting with their culture. aang hiding the map is obviously not portrayed as positive and it is ultimately sokka and katara's culture that motivates them to go back for aang. prompted by bato talking about water tribe community connection, sokka remembers being left behind by someone he cared about (hakoda), and the advice he was given to go where he's needed. they go back to aang because they're listening to water tribe wisdom (at least, wisdom given by members of the water tribe).

so like. yes there is racism in this episode, in the "icky food and animal skins" vein, but on a broader thematic level the episode's attitude towards culture and community is much more nuanced and respectful, about the way we grapple with the loss of community&culture and balance loyalties to multiple people&communities we care about
