151. Westcountry Abbey Ale. St Austell. 05/01/20
ABV 4.7%
5.0/10
It’s been on he porch shelf for ages, I think it may have been picked it up originally when shopping in Tesco, simply because I hadn’t seen it before. Drunk at home on a Sunday evening watching television.
They say:  Belgian Abbey ales are notorious for their strength, however a little more restraint is required from the monks as they dedicate themselves to prayer. One glass of modest strength beer is allowed at mealtimes, so special, weaker beers are made for consumption within the monastery walls. Rarely seen in the wider world, these brews combine the incredible complexity that is the hallmark of Abbey beers with simple purpose and function to provide refreshment and nutrition during the day of work and dedication. Westcountry Abbey Ale is an all-malt brew with aromatic noble hops and the complex signature of Belgian Abbey ale yeast.
I say: Not listed on the brewery website, other than a news article stating that Tesco have agreed to stock it. It seems that getting it into a major supermarket may have curtailed any character it once had. It poured okay, a medium brown with minimal carbonation. The aroma was lacking and so was the taste. It was easy drinking, but oh so bland. It’s as though everything has been sacrificed to get into the supermarket.

150. Splann. Dynamite Valley Brewing Co. 28/12/19.
ABV 6.3%
6.5/10
One of a number of Cornish beers I received from Scott for Christmas Day, drunk with a big meal.
They say: Sometimes brewers need to brew something for themselves to keep them sane. Dom, our head brewer, wanted something strong and sweet, with little bitterness, but still a noticeable hop flavour. We coined the phrase ‘Cornish ESB’ for this strong, very drinkable, beer.
I say: Poured a reddish brown with minimal carbonation. The aroma was faintly malty with a touch of spice. The flavour was a bit of a mish-mash. The strength was there in the background with some malt, spice, berries and fruit. Not unpleasant, but so mixed up it was not that enjoyable either.

149. Resolve. Treen’s Brewery. 25/12/19.
ABV 5.2%
7.5/10
One of a number of Cornish beers I received from Scott for Christmas Day, drunk with the big meal.
They say: Full, rich and very dark. This Premium Ale is brimming with flavour. Deep, roasted malt competes with dark chocolate and coffee culminating in a smooth, comforting finish.Strong, dark and warming. This steadfast and dangerously drinkable beer is comfort food in a glass.
I say:Poured smoothly and darkly, with little head. A most attractive brew. Little aroma and a very smooth taste with a touch of nuttiness. I like a bit more body and character, but nice enough.

148. Spingo  IPA. Blue Anchor. 07/02/19.
ABV 4.5%
8.0/10
A purchase from the Food Festival at Porthleven before Christmas.
They say: A clean tasting hoppy beer, originally brewed for Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Julilee in 2002. A light, refreshin and golden Indian Pale Ale, an intricate blend of malts and hops give it a fine balance.
I say: Poured a very pleasant pale gold colour, with no discernible sedimentary cloudiness. Slight hoppiness in the aroma. The taste was similarly slightly hoppy but much smoother than I would have expected for a Blue Anchor brew considering their previous reputation fo roughness. I like it, a pale or light IPA.

147. Bad Habit. St Austell Brewery. 08/12/18.
ABV 8.2%
8.5/10
A birthday present which had been sat on the shelf far too long, drunk t home watching I’m A Celebrity on TV.
They say: Bad Habit is a Cornish brewed Abbey Tripel that deserves serious contemplation. Pouring hazy gold, this unaltered beer delivers layers of flavour that tempt the drinker to delve even deeper to find the soul of this beer that just keeps giving. Aromas of spice, yeast and banana overlay a palate of peppery hop bitterness, citrus fruit and barley sugar, followed by the warming finish that reminds the drinker this beer deserves ultimate respect. (Tripel beer was the term traditionally used to describe a brewer's strongest beer).
I say:  I had to pour it slowly to avoid disturbing the little bit of sediment, the efoort was worth it, an amber brew with minimal carbonation and a pleasing spicy aroma. The taste was not as strong or as spicy as original Belgian Tripels, so you get a much easier drinking beer with a pleasant flavour and lots of strength should you want it.

146. Hero. Keltek Brewery. 24/11/18.
ABV 4.2%
8.0/10
A draught pint at The London Inn on a quiz night.
They say: Robust copper ale, the website has no listing, but that's what the pump clip says.
I say: I was nervous before tasting this. In the past Keltek beers have always been disappointingly poor, but this was different. I liked it from the first sip, and even more surprisingly so did Kaye. Very much like the previous week’s offering (Heligan Heroes from St Austell) this is a solid British bitter. Unpretentious pleasing taste which was very easy drinking.
