Made a moodboard for my gothic French opera singer X-Men girlie, Erika Deforest and it's too pretty to keep just on my phone, so here she is 🖤🥀 more about her below the cut if you want to read

Erika is an empth with an emphasis on hypnosis, allowing her to alter the emotions and actions of others. Her powers are channeled predominantly through her voice, and anatomically, her larynx (ie voice box) has some unique physical mutations and traits that impact her vocalizations; there is a subaudible quality that occurs when using her hypnosis that is believed to basically hijack the target's neural signaling. (Basically I'm a vet student and have to have a scientific explanation for stuff and here's what I've come up with for hers 👍 happy to wax poetic about scientific hypotheses of xmen powers any time)

Given her hypnotic powers, she eventually adopts the codename Siren when she goes into the field, rare as that is. She much prefers her day job as an opera singer at the Metropolitan Opera. Her mutation does directly make her a better performer, but no one knows it and she's keeping it mum. She'll give singing lessons and French tutoring to students at Xavier's.

In her canon, she falls head over heels in love with Wolverine, and the romance is very reciprocated (I have a whole fic and some one shots of them on my AO3, titled These Mortal Desires).

That said, an alternate version of her exists in my friend @duckyduckposting 's OC's (Helena) universe where she is not with Logan cause we made the same woman in different fonts with the same ship. Great minds yada yada 💖 (Alternatively, an alternate Helena also lives in Erika's canon also)

(There's also an evil version of Erika that only my og's know. I debate revamping her cause she was cool)

interesting to compare the homoerotics of wolverine & cyclops in the xmen films vs deadpool & wolverine in dp3. cyclops almost works better for how wolverine constantly engages with him when he doesnt need to, ie the love triangle, the vehicular theft, the bantz. i rlly felt they were friends -- there's such a real relief when logan reunites w him in dofp. dp beats cyclops in physicality & intention & screentime, but theyre disadvantaged by the weak film theyre in. after watching the xmen series tho, it's crazy that The Hugh Jackman Wolverine is in a deadpool half-joke homo film. the mythic wolverine from xmen 2000. like thats crazy

deeply frustrated to discover that my local weavers guild meets exclusively on days i am scheduled to work :(

also just in general deeply frustrated about my job. i had my 6-month review on friday and it was an annoying waste of time where my boss said very little & expected me to run it, then when i described a problem i was having asked me what would help and, after i answered, told me that she would not do either of those things. but she wants me to feel supported!!! better get on that ig

anyway here are some good things

1. my partner got a rosemary plant at the farmers market so now we have two little plants in pots on the windowsill over the kitchen sink and they both make me happy (one is a cactus in a pretty ceramic pot my mom gave us, she swore it's unkillable but we will see)

2. got tickets for minor league pride night. yay i love cheesy themes at baseball games 🏳️‍🌈

3. i talked to one of my friends on the phone! she's having a terrible time (also work) but i love company

4. my new binder is awesome

5. sweater i am knitting is coming along nicely! it's a good balance between interesting and possible to knit while watching xmen 97 (mostly bad but very fun)

6. we watched starship troopers, which we had not seen before, and had a great time. very funny movie, interesting stuff going on. the football thing was my favorite part

7. recorded and now get to edit a podfic! fun to have projects. as always if there is something you would like me to record feel free to request, but i might take forever to do it haha

8. have been churning through graphic novels so i can be an informed voter in the three eisner categories i care about (ie, the youth ones). it's fun!

Okay so *cracks knuckles* sorry for the incoming spam.

Long story short, my series is an urban fantasy that takes place in a world wherein the earth has a huge cavity belowground that is a perfect geographical mirror of our actual world (ie there's a copy of Spain, the US, the oceans, etc. underground). This other world all makes up the territory of a single country, since it was artificially created (by people their mythology calls Roxia) and artificially populated by the creators' heirs --aka current mythological figures. This country is called Mirror --since it mirrors Aboveground-- but the overall society + political structure and stuff is called The Kinship. Hence the name of the series: The Kinship Chronicles.

The inhabitants of Mirror are called Saz, their language is Sazla, and they're different from humans, either because they have powers (insignias, as they're called) or because they're fundamentally a species other than human (imlia; singular: imlium). Regular humans can become Saz by establishing a symbiosis with an imlium.

Anyways.

The books are written from different POVs, but the main character is Coraline (Cal) Everitt:

Her insignia (doppelganger) allows her to split her body into two, and to make one of those split versions near invincible. Cal is Dahlia and Matthias's only daughter, and she grew up being in the dark about The Kinship because, well, her parents had forgotten all about it for Reasons. If she discovers The Kinship, it is because Simone/the Spawn (formerly introduced as Big Evil) sent my world's version of demons on her.

This is Simone:

She's an immortal imlium who doesn't really have the markings of an actual imlium. For once, she's immortal, and she's also able to establish two symbiosis: one with a regular human and one with a human that is also Saz (which Shouldn't Happen because insignias =/= symbiosis). Even though Simone is the leader of a cult that does her every bidding, she is but a pawn in the grand scheme of things. There's a reason she's called the Spawn: she has a mysterious master, one that pushes her to fight an unending war with the supreme leader of The Kinship's army (who's also immortal).

Over the centuries, Simone has dispatched everyone who started suspecting that there was Something Fishy within The Kinship. Cal's parents she couldn't truly defeat, so she eventually went after their daughter: Cal.

But you know who she also went after? The children of Dahlia and Matthias's two best friends.

On the left, Morgan Hao (oldest); on the right, Hunter Hao (middle child). Morgan is a wraith, so she can become immaterial. Hunter is a mirage, so he can create illusions. Unlike Cal, they did grow up in The Kinship, since their parents weren't there to suffer the same fate as Cal's.

In book 1 they come to London from Shanghai because their youngest sister, who's only 6, has disappeared and they could last trace her steps to the English capital. That's where they meet Cal and enlist her to helping them find their sister. But they also enlist other people without which they couldn't have found her.

This is Selvar. He's an imlium, which means he can change shape at will (think of the blue lady from XMen). He's also a descendant of one of the original founders of Mirror, those that were turned into mythological figures. His family knew the Truth about The Kinship and what was wrong with it, so Simone has been persecuting them for generations. Selvar's parents and older sister died because of Simone and they couldn't pass their knowledge onto him because they deemed him too young (he was eight).

Selvar would've died along with his family if it hadn't been for Diana:

Diana was a regular human. She lived with her parents and older brother in a small English village in the countryside, but her whole life changed when she and her brother decided to play in the house Selvar was using as a refuge from Simone. Simone ended up finding Selvar: she killed Diana's brother in the process, but she and Selvar survived because Selvar kickstarted a symbiosis that gave them just enough strength to ward Simone off.

For the next 8 years, Diana wouldn't understand why the ghost of her brother followed her; she didn't know Selvar had adopted his appearance and now followed her because they had sort of become one. When Diana, who's friends with Cal, learns of The Kinship and subsequently of what Selvar did, she sends him to the other corner of the world (actually Luxembourg) and tries to cope with her situation partly by investigating the diaries of a Victorian woman petrified (a sentence in The Kinship) for allegedly murdering a key politician.

This woman is none other than Madeleine A. Woolaham:

Born in 1848 in the heart of a very, very, *very* conservative Victorian family, her family didn't take well to her being a lesbian who kissed Jewish girls (actually Cal's ancestor HAHAHAHA). They abused her relentlessly and even forced her into a marriage to a man, but it was fine because he was gay (and another of Cal's ancestors HAHAHAHA) so they became fast friends. Through him, Madaleine met and fell in love with a Simone disguised as her fiancé's cousin.

Simone convinced Madeleine to establish a symbiosis. Madeleine, simply put, served as her disguise to successfully murder the aforementioned politician. In the end, Madeleine was found to be innocent, but since symbiosis were judged as one...

(Needless to say, Simone didn't actually suffer any repercussions).

When Madeleine's knowledge helps find Morgan and Hunter's sister, Madeleine's sentence is reversed and she finds herself not in the 19th century, but in the 21st. While Diana soon becomes her Crush, it is someone else who Madeleine confides in:

Atalanta Everitt-Melton is Cal's adoptive cousin through her mother's side (Dahlia has a twin sister). Atalanta has albinism and she's awfully mysterious. She attends the same school as Hunter and is childhood friends with him, so she helps him find his sister without having to be asked twice. She's a historian so she sees the past.

Although Atalanta is 'single' from book 2 onwards, she's dating Oliver Whitaker in book 1.

Oliver is Cal's best friend and a puppeteer, meaning he can manipulate living beings. His parents landed a job as the Everitts' spies and, by default, Oliver was entrusted with Cal. But here's the thing about the Whitakers... do you remember Simone's cult? Yeah, Oliver's family are a prominent part of it. Oliver, however, doesn't even know of its existence.

His parents thought it would be for the best, since that way he couldn't spill the secret to Cal. But when he grows old enough to be told, not only has Oliver begun a quest against Simone: he's also fallen for a guy that's everything his parents hate.

And that's because Caleb Verninac's parents died actively fighting against Simone, leaving him an orphan who didn't even know his parents' true lives.

Caleb's Troubled and he only joins the search in book 1 because he's seeking the thrill of danger, but things get personal afterwards.

By the way, he's French (mother) and Irish (father) but lived in the US at the time of his parents' passing. He was adopted by an American man and together they moved to London.

Caleb is someone I feel like I’m definitely going to love because troubled thrill seekers? That’s my jam. Also because he’s paternally Irish and maternally French, just like me (though I’m American and not actually from there, it’s just my ancestry)

And everyone else is just super interesting too, like everyone’s super diverse and no one is too similar in personality wise, which is something I definitely struggle with with multi-POVs

"my heart is a stone, my body is not my own" because i PLANNED on it being a hurt/comfort fic and then one character was shitty at comforting and the other was not in the right place to be comforted and it became too messy for comfort to happen and it became hurt no comfort instead.

also Ethereal because while the group bonding is supposed to be a huge part of the story, sometimes I get too invested in the conversations everyone is having and I'm like "OKAY WRAP IT UP PLEASE THERE'S PLOT THAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN" and they're like No.

born september 13, 1917

physically 26 (107 as of 2024) / she/her / speaks & reads english and arabic

powers were inerhited / X gene was passed from grandmother to mom, and reinforced by her father's. her powers are derivative of nuha (n. arabian sun goddess), ruda (n. arabian moon god), atarsamain (n. arabian astral deity) who she can hear and talk to in dreams in addition to the others. stellar, solar and lunar manipulation as granted by the trinity. on her own, she possesses black magic power - telepathy, telekinesis, reality alteration/illusionism, black magic (curses/hexes), item transformation, occultism, self regeneration (exacerbated by deity granted powers). magic starts a bright green and turns black when being used ie moving things, etc. she also pretty please begged the gods to let her cat be immortal with her. lovecraft has been her cat since 1945.

intelligent, semi-confident, somewhat self-assured and very self-reliant. length of her fuse depends on how fast someone gets on her nerves (which seems to be pretty fast). keeps to herself for the most part for her sanity. suffer in silence type - introverted socially. will open her big mouth if she hears or sees something she doesn't like. would rather die than ask for help. analytical, stubborn. tends to be overcritical of herself a lot of the time and other's especially when she gets upset. chronic worrier. the devil is in the details. she hates being seen by other people but loathes being ignored. very much an outsider in more ways than just one. lover girl. strong sense of justice and believes in an eye for an eye, or more. more than willing to serve it herself. flawed in the way that she thinks she is the worst person in the world and deserves to be alone despite doing nothing wrong. ambitious, cunning.

consistently wears a lot of gold rings on each hand with various symbols/numbers for luck (literally never takes them off) usually black or green painted nails. about 5'2 or 5'3 without heels, about 5'5 or 5'6 with them. civilian clothes are pretty much mostly black outfits meant for different occasions with some accent of gold and/or green to them. tattoo of a wishbone on her ankle. tattoo of the sun, the moon and the north star on her back, on her right shoulder. long dark brown hair, dark brown eyes. wears a jade jasmine necklace from her grandmother.

fatima was born in armenia to a young mom dad (aged 13 and 14) in the duration of the armenian genocide in 1917. her mom turkish, her dad armenian - in trying to move to keep fatima safe, her mother and father left her with her maternal grandparents because they were afraid the ottoman empire would kill her too for being armenian. her parents taken and placed in a death march line down to iraq. her grandparents raised her, and as she got older stranger things would happen as her powers developed - as did her connection with nuha, ruda and atarsamain. at 3, things would disappear and reappear in the house, change shapes and forms as she experienced emotions and changes in her development. by 10, she learned / gained her other powers of telekenetics, telepathy, regeneration.

frequently was responsible for things like getting so upset and shake the surrounding buildings and farms, neighborhood through primary school. mostly, leaving behind acts of defiance and her brand of justice in her wake. her grandparents loved her very much but did not understand her powers - or why she had them. she took care of them up until they both died - her grandmother of breast cancer and her grandfather from a staph infection from cutting part of his leg open on farm sheers. the deities intervened and offered to care for her and guide her, but she needed to leave the middle east. she moved to the united states after she laid them to rest in 1943. allowing the deities intervention stopped her aging process at 26.

she had been on xavier's radar since cerebro's inception in the 1960's, but it was only when a semi-severe earthquake struck her college when she was studying in california in the 70's, causing structural damage and a fraternity house was burned down, runic symbols were burned into concrete, and all the fraternity members were found in their underwear, strung up by their ankles and crying - that it caught people's attention and was cause for concern, particuarly the xmen.

it was also not the first time where an earthquake and arabic text and runes were burned into the ground but proof someone was there that charles could hold against her. previous documented places it occured was not only the college - but through time it's been a documented phenomenon across the united states. after graduating college that semester, she backpacked through europe and left the same hellish trail behind her. she has fought them every time she has encountered them with no desire to join them because of her solitary nature.

after evading the xmen for a few years, she retired to the woods in washington state. she slowly resocialized herself into the small town of north bend - going into town to work, eat, and that's it. she would spend the rest of her time reading, and cultivating a small cabin and greenhouse. getting comfortable, she went in more often and drank at a bar called the drunk cattle. eventually, charles would try again despite her fighting them a few years prior - following another large event like the one at the college, occured in gig harbor - another small town in washington following an attack from juggernaut's attempted forced recruitment for the brotherhood of mutants. fatima had not been seen by the residents of north bend in two weeks when wolverine and storm came asking for her around town. storm was frustrated and wolverine was pissed. charles / cerebro can't find her because she's blocked herself off.

they leave the bar with logan fuming and ororo trying to be reasonable. two teenagers tell them about the lore of a witch that lives in the woods outside of bend and that she's been alive forever. logan scares the shit out of them and they spill that some lady does live in the woods but it's just the town's librarian/historian (she is really weird, never talks to anyone about more than the town or work, never has anyone over. "my dad's the mayor and he says she's nice. jack's mom works at the library with her." "my ma thinks she's a mutant." "you can't say that!" "i'm not! my ma thinks that. i do too.") followed by ororo asking nicely what that means before logan gets pissed off and almost tosses a 15 year old asking what that means.

they settle for what information they have. eventually fatima comes out of her hole and goes back to the bar after a third week. xmen bar intervention. everyone pretends to do their own thing. fatima doesn't really notice or care. it's the cranberry festival and fall faire. it's busier. each of them take turns saying hi to size her up and talking to her. she gives the same dry energy to everyone. smiles with her mouth and not her eyes to anyone. logan takes a stab at it and is annoyingly persistent. she gets annoyed easily and leaves to go to the fall carnival. more watching from the sidelines. logan tries again at charles' request ("she told me to fuck off, so we should fuck off. can't make her do nothin'." "logan, were we not patient with you?" "can't make the lady be an x-man, bub." "she does not have to be an x-man, but she must know she's not alone in the world like some other mutants i know.").

she walks around the carnival and logan talks to her. she's annoyed but she doesn't tell him to go away. he talks at first trying to have a conversation with fatima before getting annoyed and cutting to the chase. we've been looking for you a long time. she looks at everyone in the crowd. that's foolish. a waste of time really. why. 'cause charles believes in that kinda thing, no mutant being alone kinda shit. i'm not alone. i know there's other mutants. no, like bein' a pack animal. i'm no pack animal. i don't talk to anyone and i'm fine that way but thank you. is that all you want? what? to convince me to become an x-man. is that all you want?

i guess. well the offer is on the table if you change your mind. i don't know if it means anything to you i was like you. i don't think we're the same. i don't think so either but you're not alone. what's your name? logan. thank you logan. no problem bub. (forgets to ask for her name. he knows it because the papers know it, and charles knows it but it's different for someone to introduce themselves.)

he does take it upon himself to go back to north bend more often than not to see her and visit her in the bar. they don't do more than exchange maybe a few words and drink in silence. sometimes he'll talk about stuff and she'll nod or offer an apology no one has given him for the pain he's endured. she doesn't introduce herself by name once. you never told me your name. you never asked. what have you been calling me all this time then? i dunno. hex. the whole magic thing. i lke that. but what's your name? fatima.

eventually fatima does become an xmen and leave north bend after pyro burns her home down and threatens the citizens of the town, and after their fight on the washington coast and another set of runes burned into the rocky shores she shows up to the school. some people aren't excited to have her, like scott initially and butts heads with him a lot. she didn't talk to anyone. ororo and jean are happy to have her. jubilee is scared of her at first. hank is polite. gambit and rogue try to be really friendly even if she isn't receptive to it.

at the end she's a happy little member of the x-men <3 she does get a matching besties bracelet with logan (genuinely) where it's one of those silly heart bracelets that magnetically link up. their conversations are still the same but they talk more now. scott still fights with her but they get along sometimes over food or talking about strategy when charles is mediating. ororo and her talk about nature and jean helps her control her powers. jubilee hangs out with her and lovecraft watching tv. she'll borrow hank's books and ask him questions about what he knows and she finds interesting. she fits right in.

oh i just remembered. i think i had given keagan heterochromia running with the idea of it being a "mutation". ie post war radiation leading to more of all types of mutations including benign ones. i dont actually know if its a mutation the thought was entirely based off of that one thing charles says in xmen first class and then i forgot i ever even planned it that way

prologue: kitchen

- starts with kitch joining up, freshly 18 and baby faced

- blah blah blah training n couple low stakes missions, gets the callsign sputnik:

THE POTATO LAUNCHING INCIDENT OF 2024:

- earned the callsign after accidentally launching a potato into the colonel's soup during mess hall duty. the incident was so legendary that his comrades decided he had a knack for unintentional "launches," dubbing him the potato-propelling pioneer sputnik

- eventually whole team except ezra dies on a mission

- ezra gets hurt really bad n kitch blames himself (spoiler alert it's not his fault)

- kitch feels like he can't be besties w ez anymore bc he feels responsible for the mission going wrong and thinks ez deserves better/will just end up getting hurt again if they continue and ez feels abandoned bc kitch doesn’t explain it v well and just wanted them to recover together

- kitchen meets trick (how tbd) and they give him his new callsign

- (will make up a new reason every time you ask him why (ie took down 7 men with nothing but a rolling pin or infiltrated high class op dressed as a chef) only trick knows the real reason and refuses to tell just bc it's funny)

- they work together grow together and fall in love <3

act 1:

- kitchen eventually makes captain and trick is his 2nd

- trick prolly could’ve been cpt but

a. didn't really wanna

b. kitch has better social skills

- gets assigned to stop the big kaboom (how why who tbd)

- ezra teams up with the big bad bc of the shit that happened w kitch (maybe some underlying trauma? abandonment issues? child neglect?)

- the big bad is convinced they are in the right and they make some compelling points (think magneto from xmen)

- ez feels super guilty and goes back and forth the whole time, but is ultimately convinced they are doing the right thing and kitch just can’t be trusted/can’t see the bigger picture

- they do some mission impossible shit filler filler filler

- somewhere near the end angel gets shot and dies bc of the big bad (v important, has to be a gsw, maybe dies in ezra's arms?) and ez REGRETS

act 2: finale

- this is where shit starts to get real and they gear up to go to war

- more plot happens, boss fights, getting to the big bad, etc

- not long after it is revealed that ezra was a traitor all along and its super dramatic

- and then the big bad like drops a building on them or smth and ezra sacrifices himself to save them, n does some explaining while he's bleeding out (kitch forgives him)

- kitch and trick run off to try to finish the mission

- more plot happens

- they ultimately fail and die in eachothers arms

epilogue:

- shot of trick/kitch as gay post-nuclear zombies? 😏

hello starlight i am here to request kitty and ororo hanging out in the mansion. i had a good day today and i hope you did too!

send me a character/pairing and a prompt, and I'll write a three-ish sentence fic!

"Ororo? Can I help?" Kitty hovers at the door and holds up her hands ruefully when Ororo looks up from where she's laid ingredients out on the counter before her. "I promise not to touch anything except what you tell me to, I just figured, since almost everyone is still sick..."

Ororo gestures to her with a potato, mock stern, and says, "See that you don't, kitten. Now, come here. You can peel these potatoes while I chop the onions."

"What are we making?" Kitty asks, bounding forward excitedly to take the potato. Kitty knows she's not a great cook--it's an ongoing project, okay--but she loves the kitchen. Her bubbe jokes that she's too Jewish not to think that being in someone's kitchen while they cook is proof that they love her.

"Githeri," Ororo sayss. "I ate it as a little girl, it's good comfort food. And," she gives Kitty a sly smile, "with all the moaning in this mansion, you would think no one here had ever had a little head cold, so I thought that comfort food would be just right to shut them up."

FPC 2022 -Day 5

What's the most recent thing you've dreamt?

I had a really interesting one last night, something involving a heist, cards, ribbon, and food (the food was good, I think)

Do you think DC made the Doom Patrol to make a point about how fucked up Xavier was? i mean they're led by a wheelchair bound telepath that orchestrated their accidents to make them codependent expendable outcasts

mmm, maybe later on after its revival in like what, the 80s?  I do know that there was like, some sort of weird ‘he stole my idea’ ‘no u’ kind of thing going on with Arnold Drake, the creator of Doom Patrol (the whole group of weirdo super-characters lead by an older dude in a wheelchair living in a mansion sorta premise, with doom patrol coming first?), so i guess there’s that.

I think the idea of corrupt founder who you’ve been taught to love and adore and follow unquestioningly finally being called out on their bullshit is a great idea and interesting to explore; the problem being marvel never sticks to that last little bit: in-universe acknowledging consequences of xavier’s fuckups.  And honestly, that’s just like, a symptom of a larger problem in media in general: consequences not existing, especially not for creators’/writers’ favs.
