Watching Curse of Strahdanya, and falling in love with these ships and characters, is like watching the Hadestown musical to me.
In Hadestown, the first thing the narrator—Hermes—tells the audience is that this tale is a tragedy. There is no happy ending. And yet, as the show goes on, you forget that, somehow. But not fully. There’s still a little voice, lingering in the back of your mind, telling you that it’s always going to end horribly. And if you’re already familiar with the Greek myth, or the musical itself, then you know exactly how it’ll end. And yet, part of you still roots for Orpheus. To save Eurydice. To not turn around. To ignore the voices in his ear. To bring her home with him.
But. That’s not how the story goes. He always turns around. She always returns to Hadestown. And he always returns alone. And Hermes feels for the audience. He, too, yearns for there to be a day where the story changes, somehow. Of course, it won’t. That’s not how the story goes. But every time he tells the tale, some part of him yearns that maybe, just maybe, Orpheus won’t turn around. He would ignore the voices in his ear. He would bring Eurydice home. But he knows this is all in vain, for the tale is that of a tragedy, and it’ll always end the same.
Curse of Strahdanya is the same way. All the way to the title of the prologue; “The Cursed Expedition”. From the very beginning, they tell us that this tale is a tragedy. No matter what the characters do, no matter how strong they think they are, it will always end the same way. Their fates are set in stone. They will never leave, never get out. Strahdanya always wins.
And yet, the audience yearns for this telling to be different. Maybe if this character made a different choice, maybe if they convinced this character to stay, maybe…maybe…
But it always ends the same. It’s a sad tale. It’s a tragedy. Yet we tell it over and over again, as if maybe our heroes will get a happy ending this time
“To know how it ends/And still begin to sing it again/As if it might turn out this time”

Idk if I’ve just been following you for too long or if I’m just incredibly easy to influence, but either way, all your brainrotting has spread and it has had Consequences
First Philza, then sandduo, then Hadestown, then The Amazing Devil, now EPIC. I was normal about these once. Yeah, I watched some Phil streams. c!sandduo was pretty interesting. I knew a few Hadestown and TAD songs. Casually followed along the making of EPIC a year or two ago. AND LOOK AT ME NOW. I have not been normal about any of it since. You really up and changed the chemistry of my brain to align with your interests. Just like that. Just sneaky enough that it took me, like, two years to notice.
Actually, I have no idea when I first started following you. One day you were just There and I was just following you on every platform I had with no memory of doing so. It would make sense that I did that in the beginning of my dsmp phase as I started following a bunch of dsmp artists then, but I could SWEAR it’s been longer than that. I remember being confused about that in, like, early-mid 2021 (when my dsmp phase started) bc I sweared the name “TheChannelWithoutAName” was far more familiar to me than the rest of the artists I had followed within that time.
You are like a cryptid. You came from nowhere, as if you had been there the whole time, and then slowly started rotting my brain and taking it over. When I first saw your Athena design I had just, a few hours earlier, tried to make my own version but it wasn’t coming out quite right. Then I saw yours and I was like “yeah! That’s it! That’s… pretty much exactly what I was tryina go for!” Then just now I finished watching your latest animatic and thought “man! That’s exactly how I pictured her, down to her facial expressions and mannerisms.”

After I posted about how I love the TMA fanart I had a couple people ask about how I think the characters look. I can’t draw so here are some photos and descriptions. Note* I listened to the whole series before I even looked at the fandom. They’re stuck as who they are in my brain and I can’t change them anymore, they’re dug in there.

I know canonically Martin is on the bigger side but that sweet face, the big beautiful puppy eyes and the ginger hair! The 2nd photo is 100% the way I see him in S4. In S1-3 he wears a lot of color but by S4 he’s all gray suits and no smiles in his eyes.

I don’t necessarily know why but she’s all I’ve ever seen Daisy as. Maybe because she has an incredible “don’t fuck with me” look.
Basira Hussein - I don’t have a specific actress in mind for her but she has a gorgeous round face dark pools for eyes and full lips. Idk if Basira wears a hijab all the time, I don’t think I have the right to headcanon one way or another, but if she isn’t wearing it she has curly black hair.
Elias Bouchard - Hear me out, I imagined him before I knew he was evil and hot. By the time I realized, it was too late for my brain to reliably change him. He’s a remolded memory of Uncle Jack in It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia only a little younger and with a Vincent Price pencil mustache and a very nice suit. I won’t add a picture of the actor because it’s not exactly him.
Michael - Bill Skarsgard

Hiiiii truly sorry friend this literally took so long!!!!!!!!!!!! b/c i sat here wracking my brain abt what tf i wanted to talk abt and i got all distracted by wanting to finish Biggest Lie and. i decided to just do what i did last time and. Just go over everything that was a reference or not to something else within Almost b/c I do think that is the easiest way to comb over this gd fic from head to toe. If i don't finish in one go I'll just reblog w/ additions and tag you in
"You're in love, aren't you?" / "You've been sighing all day" I've talked about this before, it's actually a pull from Howl's moving castle. Easily one of the most shameless things i've pilfered and it doesnt even really have a meaning, I just think the exchange is funny.
When J2 approaches, Porter Cliffbreaker lights up with the most insufferable, self-satisfied grin J2’s ever seen in his short life. “You’re early,” he practically purrs. - (In ch 3 for context. This is Porter seeing J2 for the first time.) Obviously we're continuing the Hadestown motif of "you're early" "I missed you". This is again part of the Porter n Jace whole Thing of like. Jace breaking up with him (not in the Big Break but you know). Obviously part of the reason Porter is being so smug is that he thinks Jace is coming crawling back to him. Lol. He thought, didn't he?
"I’m in the correct place, right?” / J2 turns to a tiefling girl in a plaid skirt and a ripped band shirt who is strapping bass guitar to her chest. “Hey, kid. Am I in the right class?” This is a weird pull but this is actually Twelfth Night to me, the scene where Viola first meets Olivia. I just think it's so funny when Viola comes in and doesn't know whether Maria or Olivia is the lady of the house. "The honorable lady of the house, which is she?" / "Most radiant, exquisite, and unmatchable beauty—I pray you, tell me if this be the lady of the house, for I never saw her. I would be loath to cast away my speech—" etc etc. There's a lot of Twelfth Night influence just b/c there's a lot of like mistaken identity stuff and being in love with someone while they're in love with someone else etc etc all that good stuff. I also think the scene where Viola has to woo olivia is just like. Hot. To be fair tho, J2 is kinda doing the opposite here, he's letting Porter down easy abt the breakup. It's a loose pull but i like the idea of J2 being so out of his element he doesn't even know he's in the right place.
“ What are you?” “I… can’t say. An olive branch? A… A best kept secret, maybe. Between you and the guy up top.” “A secret?” “A parting gift.” But also “What am I?” “That. But also why are you here? A beat. “I’m…” Finally, J2 settles on, “A messenger?” and “It’s—he wants to insist he’s not at war, here.” “Well, that’s a damn shame" is so this Twelfth Night exchange to me:

^^^ to elaborate (sorry i didn't wanna type it out): Idk the viola n olivia vibes in this whole scene not just this part are so flirtaeous and i liked the mentions of war and divinity. Like Porter is the god of war and yet the clones existing as this kind of olive branch. And there's this question of What J2 Is. And there isn't really an answer to that. I liked this idea of him being a secret. A gift. The line "to your ears divinity, to any others profanation" was just. ough.
I'll do this like. It's a big block of text so:
The fluorescence flickers. Mindless, as if purely out of routine, he makes his way over to the sink, to the cabinets full of mugs and glasses. J2 spots Jace’s immediately—it’s purple, with a slogan from his favorite podcast. He snatches it by the handle and throws it against the floor, where it shatters into a million pieces. He thinks about Jaceprime, and about being Dispelled. Despite the fear he can feel rising in his chest, making it hard to breathe, he thinks for another long moment. What a satisfying crash. He wonders if his fear of oblivion is unique to simulacra, or if it's something Jaceprime also has to grapple with every day. He wonders about the weird glowing gem in his chest, and how Jaceprime always refers to a time Before, with him and The Big Guy, but refuses to say outright what happened. He thinks about Porter—and of rage. He stares at the shattered pieces of the cup on the ground. And after a moment of serious contemplation, he grabs another mug off the shelf, and he does it again.
Anyway^^^: That's a reference to The Haunting of Hill House! Both the show and the movie. Theodora says it in both versions. Here's the anecdote I love so much:
“When I was a child,” Theodora said lazily, “—'many years ago,‟ Doctor, as you put it so tactfully—I was whipped for throwing a brick through a greenhouse roof. I remember I thought about it for a long time, remembering the whipping but remembering also the lovely crash, and after thinking about it very seriously I went out and did it again
The variation from the show also includes something along the lines about "I learned a lot about my own mother that day. Taught her, too." which I completely forgot is such a movie special but. I think was also so vital to why I loved that line and wanted to include a nod to it. Like. I've already talked about this but i wanna reiterate that I do not feel bad making motherhood comparisons w/ Jace and the clones b/c he is their creator! He is their frankenstein! Anyway, the imagery of like, getting satisfaction out of doing something destructive, and then doubling down out. Even if you get repercussions from your parent. Or maybe because of that. Maybe spite is the motivator. It was so striking. I think we tend to get this perception of J2 as this soft baby boy but this is one of my fav moments of his because it's so impotent and petulant. It's so him trashing a bathroom to have some semblance of power. J2 has so little power, but he can destroy Jace's favorite mug! (also, yes it was a complicated woman podcast mug. Also in IYWD Jace mentions the fact that he started bringing crappy mugs to work bc his kept disappearing and this was kinda a nod to that.)
"I—Fuck, Porter! Why don’t you just tell me what to do!" Ok, this is also pretty broad. Pulling from a few things here. I mean. This is very Pearl-coded to me. I still think about that scene to garnet where she says "I'm useless on my own. I need someone to tell me what to do". Also Please don't laugh, I have an old Hugh grant comedy that's my favorite and there's a scene where the son is having an argument w/ his mom and when he says "Because we never have any discussions, we have an argument, and you always win! Why don't you just tell me what to do" and she goes "Because I want you to think for yourself!" and then he's like fine then mom its not up to you if hugh grant is my friend even if he did pretend to have a two year old son so he could sleep with the single moms at the single parent support group. I love this movie btw. which i've already said like the paternal connotations to godhood mean i don't feel TOO bad when Porter's vibe gets weird and paternal. There's also a definite "I want someone to tell me what to wear in the morning. I want someone to tell me what to wear every morning fleabag vibe. I mean. Who said that.
“I—I’m not a consolation prize, Porter,” I think this is technically broad enough to not be a when harry met sally reference, but Sally does say this to Harry when he's trying to apologize to her and he's basically like "lol if neither of us have a date to the new york party we can go together" which. If that's not the vibe for whats going on. Filling in a spot because the other person is lonely.
“I want you. I’m only here for so long, and all I know is. I like you, ok?” and “I think you’re right.” J2 is working to keep his voice steady. “We both know that I was made for you. Literally. But more importantly… I like you. I know that much.” This is such a weird pull but this is such a Parks and Rec "I love you and I like you" (evil version) for me. I think there's such an interesting distinction between like and love. There's something so sad about J2 trying to insist, to me anyway, that he would also choose this even if he wasn't destined to love Porter due to being Of Jace. Love is destiny, but "like"? Like has the connotation of. Friendship. New feelings, innocence, juvenile. Just enjoying each other's company. J2 has so little, and he enjoys being around Porter. He loves Porter, but he likes him. It's... almost... adolescent. But it's also very. Forget the sweeping romance. I would do laundry and taxes with you.
“I like you, too, Bluejay.” I mean. Barely a reference but we all know Bluejay is so Hey, little Songbird coded from hadestown. I've joked about this but legit i was so so so so so terrified to give J2 a nickname to individualize him b/c i was so scared of completely blowing it. And I was just like. This is BARELY an individualization. He likes blue. Is that the dumbest thing ever. Obviously the concept of ownership is so prevalent in almost, and J2 is so comforts of a gilded cage coded. He's the precious gift, the one who learns to love the cage that Jace rejects. He's ESPECIALLY hey little songbird coded to me, b/c it's about Jace running away (Persephone) and Porter finding someone else to replace him (Eurydice).
“Hey. What’s with the silent treatment?” says Porter. “Cat gotch’er tongue?” Um. Hey. Little songbird. Cat got your tongue? Always a pity for one so pretty and young... No excuse.
I'll pair it with Porter rises from his desk, and J2 is in the embrace of his arms. and It feels so good being in Porter’s arms. and “I can make it go away,” says Porter, so softly—tenderly—even as he tightens his grasp on J2, secure. etc etc. Because that's not like. As on the nose but that's ALL Hadestown comforts of a gilded cage imagery. Someone who could love these walls that hold her close, and keep her safe, and think of them as my embrace. etc etc. Just. This idea of J2 running away from somthing and straight into the trap that was so heartbreaking to me. "Strange is the call of this strange man. I wanna fly down and feed at this hand. I want a nice soft place to land. I wanna lie down forever." etc. Even as he's getting this like. Horrible revelation about the truth of what Porter did to jace, and he's feeling this new fear that this could be him, he was built to find comfort here. He was raised to find comfort here. Porter wants everything. And J2 owns nothing, not even himself. "Seeing as you've got nothing to lose, and I could use a canary"
To go to something... maybe funnier? Maybe not. Again. Silly pull. J2 sniffs. Finally, he braves a look up, blinking back tears as he says, “Can… you just hold me a little longer?” Porter’s smile makes him forget all else. “Of course.” Like. This doesn't take place in chapter 7, but to me, this is the smoking gun that J2 and Porter were always going to sleep together (i mean, they already have, but in a Mega Turbo Detect Thoughts Sex Trick Orgasm Way). This is actually something from When Harry Met Sally! Sally says this to harry when she's crying about her ex getting married. And he holds her and gives her a kiss and this is the first time they sleep together. Like this is so Hurt/Comfort (evil version) of that scene to me, and the nature of like, comfort that turns into sexual tension is fascinating to me. And like. There's something so comedic and pathetic and cloying about the way she asks it too. Like. The desperation but also the slight comedy of it.
I'll also say, if you wanna read this into it too. I do this this is All I've Ever Known (evil version). "all i've ever known is how to hold my own, but now I wanna hold you, hold you close, I don't wanna ever have to let you go. Now I wanna hold you hold you tight, I don't wanna go back to the lonely life" etc etc
 “He still loves you, you know.” / Jace is... “ —A good guy,” he insists hard, / “I—I know we are… of the same. But—I don’t understand it. If—” / “Porter, gods, Porter, if I loved you the way my master loves you…” / "How does he love me?”  OK. So this entire scene is a little bit Handmaiden coded in that it's like. Ohhhh what if we were fucking and I was pretending to do this in service of teaching you what the person you're supposed to be with and what they would do this is just instructional i prommyyyyy.
But Also this whole Thing to me I was taking on a kind of. Like. Reverse Twelfth Night thing? Like, the concept is very much closer to Orsino and Viola's deal, in that Viola loves Orsino while Orsino loves olivia (Say that some lady, as perhaps there is, hath for your love as great a pant of heart as you have for Olivia! You cannot love her, you tell her so. Must she not then be answered?". "I am all the daughters of my father's house. And all the brothers too") But I do really like the idea of Viola having to convey the depth of Orsino's longing for Olivia by using her own pining for Orsino. That's littered throughout this scene. There are a ton of nods to the exchange. "How does he love me" is a direct quote. There's also this:
If I did love you in my master’s flame, With such a suff’ring, such a deadly life, In your denial I would find no sense. I would not understand it.
But yeah it's this idea of like. J2 is channelling jace and getting extremely horny about it. He's imainging the depth of Jace's longing and he finds it genuinely moving. He things Porter deserves that. but also. J2 is using his own longing here, and essentially giving Porter a gift because he knows the depth of that longing would mean more to Porter if it was from Jace. Which of these is the truth? Maybe both
"With adorations. With fertile tears. With groans that thunder love. With sighs of fire" This is the only thing that is like. A direct quotation of something Viola says in Twelfth Night, and I just think its so horny and honestly? Effective. Why ruin a good thing?
OK! Last one!
J2 is getting what he wants. He gets to be by Porter's side, despite the risk. (And in his memories, Jace looks so happy. Doesn't Porter deserve that, too?) So why does this feel like… death? Like he’s dissolving into snow—dissipating in the warmth of the sun? That’s how it works, right? He doesn’t know that much, but it feels true, doesn’t it? When your heart breaks, you should die.
Like.... Am i gonna get stoned for this? Do I have the right in invoke Tony Kushner? Do i deserve this? I'm being so real here, this is one of those "janelle is using paradise lost to talk abt jaceporter" things that just feels deeply WRONG.
Anyway. This is 100% and Angels in America reference. And I... It feels a little wrong to put Jaceporter fanfiction and such a beautiful piece of art in the same breath but here we are. The line is:  "I don’t understand why I’m not dead. When your heart breaks, you should die. But there’s still the rest of you." Like... I just think that line is so sad and beautiful. Am... Am I allowed to do this??? Like. It doesn't feel right. It felt right to put it there. It was so clear in my mind. It just felt so emotionally true... J2 is so green... And it's this like. Invocation that he's a person but he's a simulacra. he's animated snow. How does being a person even work. How does it work when you've been robbed of your purpose?
It's just. That's how it should work, right? When your heart breaks, you should die.

I dunno- this and into the woods is my favorite musicals and I’ve had traffic brain rot for AGESSS and I was finally re-listening to Hadestown and this absolute fever dream of an idea dawned on me during hey little song bird
So yeah. Enjoy?

And obvious disclaimer this are all the character versions of these people not the actual people thank you very much for you patience.
ANYWAY

Eurydice- Jimmy Solidarity ✨the canary✨ you see the vision. This (joke?) is what started this whole thing so.
Orpheus- Still deciding between Scott and Tango
Tango pros:
- They are soulmates
- the goat horns are kinda vaguely like music/an instrument 👀
- ranchers duo is SO SWEET always
- their lives are tethered which in a way fits the story of the show and the myth.
- idk i just like this idea
- why are you still here? It’s over. Go home.
- c!jimmy seems to be on better terms with c!tango than c!scott soooo
Scott pros:
- they were husbands, Jimmy died first tragically (very accurate to original myth)
- THE FLOWER MOTIF- specifically a red flower. It’s just so perfect
- they saw each other in the afterlife
- Scott is always attached to flower husbands which seems fitting
- he likes to sing? Empires musical? I don’t know but it seems like it works
-flower husbands and desert duo have connections (you will see why this is important)
So yeah leaning towards tango for the vibes but leaning towards Scott for actual similarities in plot and such.
(If someone wants to say Joel or someone I will happily hear you out lol)

Hades and Persephone- c!Grian and c!Scar/desert duo. The characters were once in love and then it grew into a a more bitter relationship. There are lots of potential parallels with Hadestown older lovers and desert duo. Grian and scar also have flower/plant motifs.
Grian as hades- He is a watcher, which seems fitting. Creator of the games seems fitting for god of death and also the industrial foreman Hadestown has. Original winner.
Scar as Persephone- Now that he is a winner, I personally love the idea of him being the earth, which is perfect for the god(dess) of spring. I also think his secret life skins going from green to black is an accidental parallel.
The only real issue with this is I want to incorporate Grian being the sun but that’s contradictory;-;
Hermes- My main idea atm is Martyn. This is mostly because storytelling and lore is very connected to him and his character. Who doesn’t love some eyes and ears AU/lore
I am also considering pearl just because I like that idea, her being the moon and being connected to g and s, etc
And Ren because he is such a storyteller/theater kid
The Fates- I have several ideas for this
-the watchers(and secret keeper.) Obvious reasons
- the other winners
-clethubs because they are a fun/good trio lol
- ren, pearl, Scott (in case I don’t have them as Hermes/orpheus)
- the remaining Evo members: bigb (also he was so creechur in third life ), pearl, and if he’s not Hermes, Martyn (also good since pearl and martyn have won)

I’m having thoughts about hadestown and they need to go somewhere so here we are
Ok so “hey little songbird” is like so fucking good top 5 songs in the show at least maybe even top 3 but anyway I wanted to talk about the lyrics more than anything and how I don’t at all blame Eurydice for signing the contract with hades
It’s repeated over and over again in the show that “Eurydice is a hungry young girl” and hades is offering her what she wants most and what Orpheus can’t give her just yet; food, shelter, and warmth.
Her first verse in the song saying “strange is the call of this strange man/ I want to fly down and feed at his hand/ I want a nice soft place to land/ I want to lie down forever” saying how she doesn’t know if she should trust him yet but his charm and offers are already getting to her, and she knows he can offer her a “soft place to land” because she’s been running all her life and she’s saying she wants to “lie down forever” meaning she doesn’t want to have to run anymore. she craves safety, and consistency, another thing Orpheus can’t give her just yet. and while he is working up to being able to do that, from Eurydices point of view she sees the man she loves changing, and being distant, ignoring her to work on this song.
And Eurydice can’t handle this change, her whole life things have been changing on her like the wind and we know already she has a tendency to run when things feel uncertain.
So when hades comes and offers her this certainty and promises she won’t be hungry anymore obviously she’s considering it
And her next verse shows that she’s hesitant because for the first time she truly loves someone and I’m sure she was already nervous that he was changing like everything else in her life from her lines in “chant” trying to get his attention, begging him to shelter her from the wind, but still she thinks of him in this moment saying “suddenly, nothing is as it was/ where are you now orpheus?/ wasn’t it gonna be the two of us?/ weren’t we birds of a feather?”
And hades knowing her love for Orpheus and seeing her hesitation feeds into her fears reminding her that he’s is penniless and saying “you give him your hand he’ll give you his hand…to mouth” (had to look up what that saying meant cause I had never heard it and it just hit me how insane that line is) and “he’ll write you a poem when the power is out” basically telling her Orpheus won’t be able to take care of her and finishing his verse by saying “Hey why not fly south for the winter?” Telling her that he can
He then reminds her how dangerous it is for her saying “hey, little songbird, look all around you/ see how the vipers and vultures surround you/they’ll take you down and they’ll pick you clean/ if you stick around such a desperate scene”because obviously he wants to make her current situation seem as bad as possible so his alternative seems better by comparison. Master manipulation tactics by hades here tbh praying on the weaknesses of a hungry young girl to prove a point to your wife and also make her jealous
But Hermes said it best in the intro song to “when the chips are down”
“Songbird versus rattlesnake/ Eurydice was a hungry young girl/ and hades gave her a choice to make/ a ticket to the underworld.”
And I love how in “gone, I’m gone” it really puts emphasis on how desperate people get in the face of hunger. She talks about how she loves Orpheus but can’t wait for him saying “my heart it aches to stay/ but the flesh will have its way” (side note just the way she says “Orpheus, I’m hungry.” Scratches my brain and idk why I love it sm)

Odd confession: I'm terrified of going back to school and facing bullying once again.
Like, I had an anxiety attack this morning thinking of how now I'm wearing glasses and someone could break them just to be mean?
I know they are college kids but you don't get it. I actually had a convo with my brother the other day explaining a lot of these 18-20 year olds are emotionally stunted since they didn't get to go through normal High School during Covid so now they are living their "High School phase" in college?
Like, for example, I went to see the Beetlejucie tour the other day right? And as per traiditon I bough myself some merch like I do every time I've seen it. I have ADHD and as y'all know Beetlejuice is my hyperfixiation and comfort media.
And then I realized I am gonna get relentlessly bullied for liking Beetlejuice so much? And having a shit ton of Beetlejuice shit. A backpack, shirts, hoodie, pants, plushies, pins and now thermo & socks too.
I remember this one autistic kid in my major getting relentlessly made fun of and excluded for "liking Hadestown too much" and he did his best to graduate early to get away from them bc he got sick of all the childish bullying. So idk why the same wouldn't happen with me.
On the one hand I want to ignore them and keep around my Beetlejuice stuff because it brings my little ND brain JOY!!!
And like, we are ALL THEATRE KIDS so idk why liking musical theatre this much makes me a creep in their eyes? Or having hyperfixiations I can't help bc I'm ND.
But also I don't want to go through hell again and get excluded and called a rapist r*etarded freak :/
Also since I'm latinx I have an accent which means I sound "funny" and some have bullied me by calling me iliterate and r*tarded :c
(My fav is being called a "dirty mexican that's here to steal our jobs" by my now ex roommate 🙃)
I also remember being made fun of on my birthday last year bc I was "too old" to be in college (hence a loser and creep) and a "self centered narcissist" for even daring to mention it was my birthday when the professor asked what was new with me (a couple of classmates did get pissed off on my behalf for the mockery but the majority of them joined in)... and my birthday is this semester so I am afraid of what kinda BS i'mma have to face that day.
I also fear I'm not gonna get invited to any Halloween parties once again, and am planning to dress as either Star Lord (I want his leather coat so bad lol), Fizzarolli or Blitzø on the day to at least celebrate in my own little way (also an excuse to cosplay)... so maybe I am not helping in keeping them from thiking of me as a pathetic freak?

top five characters from musicals
ooo VERY fun question! it was actually kinda hard for me to answer this bc it turns out that when it comes to musicals I weirdly tend to not get super attached to the characters - apparently I'm here for the bops and the melodrama first and foremost
but off the top of my head here's my current fave musical characters that live in my brain rent free (also I feel like this was implied in the question but for the sake of being precise here I'm limiting this to either stage musicals or Things That Were Originally Stage Musicals, so no animated Disney musicals or anything like that):
1. obviously eurydice hadestown is my primary blorbo from my stage musicals - I’ve loved her in basically all of the show’s many weird and varied incarnations, although eva noblezada and nabiyah be’s eurydices occupy the most important place in my heart. I just think that what hadestown does with eurydice is such an interesting and unique and thematically brilliant take on a character who historically has always been kind of an afterthought in her own myth. I mean, the concept of eurydice choosing to go to the underworld is a fascinating one, and it’s not like hadestown is even the first retelling of the myth to attempt it, but I do feel like the way hadestown crafts its world and builds up eurydice’s character and flaws around it makes it feel a lot stronger than it does in other versions. SPEAKING OF WHICH ACTUALLY, I do feel like there’s a kind of... tradition, I guess, around romantic tragedy as a genre going back to the original orpheus and eurydice myth, where the female characters at the centre of them tend to be written as “pure and innocent” and like, that’s why it’s sad when the bad stuff happens to them. funnily enough you even see that in the last thing eva noblezada did before hadestown in the form of miss saigon (which is. a whole other thing that I don’t have time to get into). and so I love that hadestown is absolutely echoing that romantic tragedy tradition but eurydice is allowed to be deeply deeply flawed in a way that fundamentally impacts the narrative!! she has agency!! she has a really prominent fuck-yours-got-mine attitude that’s literally The Thing that ends up fucking her over initially but that’s never treated as making it any less tragic and it’s super compelling!!! idk it’s weird bc i wouldn’t necessarily say she’s even a particularly complex character but within that simplicity there’s still something so messy and compelling about her! i just. want good things for eurydice and i’m aware that that’s a deeply unfortunate opinion to have just on the face of it but I guess that speaks to how well hadestown is able to suck you into its tragedy
2. lydia deetz is my goth daughter and I adore her!! I think one thing I really love about musical adaptations of things is that for whatever reason they tend to be a lot less... bound to the source material than adaptations into other media - I have no idea why this is a Thing but it definitely has some interesting results! For whatever reason the people who adapted beetlejuice into a musical decided it should be turned into a story about a teenage girl coping with the grief of losing a parent, and I think the world of theatre is better for them having made that call! I love the musical’s version of Lydia and I love the Energy every actor has brought to her and I love the weird little dynamics she forms with a recently deceased couple and a Ghost Zombie Jesus. the arc she has is just. blindingly sincere in a way that really caught me off guard listening to beetlejuice for the first time and not expecting much more than a Fun Comedy Musical, and every time I think about her saying “let’s clean it up” right before the final number I want to cry a little bit in the best way possible
3. I basically perpetually have brainrot about anita westsidestory, partly because I think it’s a natural human instinct to feel a very strong sense of attachment to Rita Moreno, and partly because the new film version of west side story handed me my Entire Ass, twice because I went and saw it a second time just for the dance numbers. look, sometimes you see a character and you’re just instantly like “ok. I see why they’re considered an icon of musical theatre” and anita is one of those characters. she is a VERY memorable standout in a musical that isn’t generally remembered for its characters - she’s incredibly fun and entertaining to watch in act 1 and then makes such a dramatic shift to just having so much pathos in act 2. even though she’s a secondary character, I do feel like she’s the one I most Feel the tragedy of the musical for. anyway, uh. idk how to end this point so congrats to ariana debose for the very well deserved oscar nomination i guess?
4. would it be cheating for me to include jo march here? probably, but there is a musical of little women and she is my main girl always and for all you can say about the little women musical, jo herself is definitely one of the things they do get right, at least where it matters! it’s to the point where I’d honestly consider the musical version of Jo one of the best Jo Marches out there, and trust me, considering how inconsistent the musical is that’s pretty impressive! she strikes a great balance between unsure teenager trying to figure out how to fit in the world and completely unhinged theatre kid and I live for it. and my feelings on the ending aside, I do think her arc in the musical is really strong - when little women adaptations have jo write her book in honour of beth it basically always Gets To Me, but I do feel like the musical handles it particularly well. or maybe it’s just that the songs really heighten the emotions - who knows!
5. uhhh for the sake of my 12 year old self I kind of have to include jean valjean here - he’s not a character I’m overly invested in anymore but he was my favourite of favourites in my youth and les mis is still one of my fave musicals of all time (even if it has been kicked off the number 1 spot lately by hadestown) so consider this a tribute to my past. and also to the character who’s probably responsible for my love for the Grizzled Old Dude Who Accidentally Becomes a Dad trope

Ireena songs
“Show Yourself” from Frozen 2 - specifically my Saturday Ireena having a conversation with Tatyana for what seems like hours in the few seconds it takes her to hit the bottom of the pool of the White Sun. You are the one you’ve been waiting for all of your life. I cried in my kitchen over this line. Tatyana letting Ireena go and Ireena finally getting to be Ireena and Ireena Alone. 
“Hey Little Songbird” from Hadestown - Strahd and a Tatyana incarnation. IDK who. But it hit me like a sack of bricks after “Show Yourself” tonight
“Poor Unfortunate Souls” from The Little Mermaid - another Saturday thing specifically, but Ludmilla taking over coaching Gertruda in being a bride since Finnegan is on the cusp of catastrophic failure because this girl doesn’t know how to have a pleasing conversation with Strahd. 
“Once Upon a Dream” from Sleeping Beauty - Tatyana’s soul seeking Sergei’s EVERY LIFETIME and never finding him

hadestown brain dump (songs)
SPOILERS FOR HADESTOWN/THE STORY OF ORPHEUS AND EURYDICE
ok so it may have been more than a few days, but what're you gonna do about it?
so i wanted to do another brain dump, and i wanted to listen to hadestown, so i'm doing a song by song brain dump as i go along. this means that my thoughts are going to be even more stream-of-consciousness style (if that's even possible.) also i'm talking specifically about the original broadway cast recording bc i haven't listened to any other version. (also this was completed across multiple months so it is even more chaotic lmao).
also i highly recommend that you listen to the musical and/or pull up the lyrics as you go along! enjoy!
road to hell. the way andre brings in the chorus is flawless please. also the way that hermes is both a narrator and a character in the story he's narrating? beautiful. "the king of the mine." he sounds so nice here for some reason. also love his self-introduction "maybe it will turn out this time" no it won't but thank you for trying. also breaking the fourth wall to acknowledge the chorus and crew is so nice, here comes reeve ;) mans sounds like an angel. you can hear amber's voice stick out of the chorus and i literally love it so much. i'd die for amber gray but we'll get to that later.
any way the wind blows. the fates literally sound so perfect together. Eva's intro throws me off every time, she sounds so pretty. dear god the harmonies with the fates hit so different. can this cast please narrate my life? there's the wind comparisons ;D the "ooos" are so good. "and it ain't because i'm kind" idk i just like how andre sounds here. oh and the funny behind "so i took him underneath my wing" because hermes has wings on his helmet and shoes.
come home with me. orpheus is so oblivious but i love it. also eurydice is literally such a mood. the wordplay with "come again". the "oh, he's crazy" is my favorite part of the whole song. also eva's voice acting is so good.
wedding song. the way she says "lover"? my ass cannot handle this. eva sounds so smug in the beginning of this song and i love it. "sing the song ;)" eurydice is so fantastic. the chorus of "la" is so pretty. eva joining in during the end is just. so perfect.
epic i. hell yeah introduce the king and queen (both literally and figuratively). reeve's falsetto <3 the way orpheus looks to hermes for approval throughout the musical. hermes narrating over orpheus singing.
livin' it up on top. HELL YES THE QUEEN HAS ARRIVED. i love amber gray so much. the gravel and the rasp. please step on me. also i love the idea of persephone being the wine aunt, especially because media usually portrays her as soft and breakable. the way she says "haaard". the way the music gets more upbeat and energetic when hermes says "the world came back to liiife!" the instrumental/dance? break is so good. please kill me with that trumpet good sir. the leadup to when amber starts singing again. orpheus really knows how to give a speech. "i will ;)" amber please step on me i am not joking.
all i've ever known (intro). thank you for the intro king. the music is so pretty. the way it picks up with the piano part <3
all i've ever known. eva sounds so pretty dear god. yay more wind references! the wordplay with "hold". and also the references to hot and cold throughout the musical. "i don't wanna ever have to let you go." lol ironic because she ends up going with hades. "i knew you before we met, and i don't even know you yet." the fucking wordplay. like holy shit. the "love at first sight" feelings. this line gets me every damn time. the wordplay from 2:10 - 2:38 is so fucking incredible. i lose it every time istg. the instrumental portion is so pretty. the wind! "we'll always be like this" i fucking love irony so much. its so underrated and adds so many layers to the story.
way down hadestown. amber gray. that's it. "you either get to hell or to hadestown, ain't no difference anymore". i fucking love this line so much. not really sure why but the delivery is perfect. also the whole thing with it being a train? i love that so much. all the allusions and comparisons they can make are fantastic. more amber gray appreciation. and ofc. the fates. more fantastic instrumental breaks. "and you better forget about your wishing well." this line is so good but so sad because its literally persephone saying that "hey, fair warning, life is shit down there" and i feel bad for her. like the way she's super sassy and shit, but just stops singing when hades gets there, you can tell that she's definitely not ok. speaking of hades, holy shit patrick page. sounds so fucking fantastic. thank you for existing good sir. eva with the breathtaking single lines. and eva's voice standing out when she sings "ground".
a gathering storm. the constant references to weather and nature throughout the whole musical. eurydice with the common sense. the wind again! "did you hear me, orpheus?" he did not, in fact, hear her.
epic ii. the different names for hades in each epic make me so happy. hades thoughts: "i think my wife might not come back cause i'm super controlling. whatever shall i do? oh, i know! be even more controlling!" lmao dumbass motherfucker. that might not work out so well. i fucking love the transition into "chant" so much.
chant. this is one of my favorite songs from the musical. the wordplay within the entire song is so fucking fantastic. hades singing about desire and then orpheus singing the "song of love" was definitely done on purpose and i'm living for it. every single one of eva's lines make me emotional. ma'am why are you good at everything?? the band! more weather references! patrick page singing "lover" hits different. orpheus singing about hades and persephone being blind and deaf. lmao irony because he's not paying attention to anything around him. the wind! weather! "the song of love" is what brought orpheus and eurydice together, but orpheus' devotion to finishing it is what drives eurydice to hades. "did you think i'd be impressed" i was right ;) it didn't work out so well.
hey, little songbird. the strings <3 patrick page is a god (lol i'm so funny). how does he manage to make manipulation sound so good? bird references! the vocal contrast! eva's voice has this kind of "innocence" to it. especially compared to patrick. not sure if that's on purpose or not, but i love it. also the low note kills me every time. the octave jumps between patrick and eva's voices is just. ugh. and also eva's entire second verse is so fucking good. the emotion she portrays in her voice is so spectacular. seriously hades with the manipulation is so interesting and its so good. (manipulation is not a good thing i just mean that its done so well in the show. do not manipulate people!)
when the chips are down (intro). "your ticket ;)" yes pls sir i'll take a ticket cause life sucks ass.
when the chips are down. i fucking love the fates dear god. gambling references! eva has literally one line and still owns my heart. the band! "shoot to kill" sounds so good like i love it so much pls. also this fucking line "cast your eyes to heaven, you get a knife in the back" is so good. i'm gonna have to get into quite a few lines throughout the musical in a different brain dump because i have so much thought.
gone, i'm gone. darling eurydice. its not your fault that you're starving stop apologizing. "talk of sin" lol she do be going to hell. that's funny. the harmonies.
wait for me (intro). the piano. heremes trying to change the subject hurts my heart. and orpheus' reaction is so sad please. "no.." just rip my fucking heart out, why don't you?
wait for me. the transition. andre coming in clutch with the narration. reeve sounds wonderful, as always. the fucking fates. just kill me already. they literally sound so good. the strings' build up between the "la"s. the chorus. the buildup at the end.
why we build the wall. the total 180 in the vibes. call and response has a special pace in my heart. mr page killing it again. god, hades is such a piece of shit and its perfect. he really is a master manipulator. fuck capitalism. the chorus sounds so good. i want to platonically smooch all of them. jesus fucking christ burn capitalism to the ground. the end is amazing. also the not-so-subtle references to slavery/forced labor.
why we build the wall (outro). i'd die for andre. "anybody want a drink?" yes ma'am. yes please. (don't drink, kids) i love you so much.
our lady of the underground. its so jazzy! jesus fucking christ. oh my fucking god. i would literally sell my soul for amber gray. what did we ever do to deserve her? god the raspiness fucking kills me. also love that she breaks the fourth wall to acknowledge the band. when she comes back in after the instrumental break? consider me dead. "what the boss don't know, the boss won't mind" she sounds so good here. also i love that she straight up doesn't give a fuck about hades here.
way down hadestown (reprise). hell yeah i love reprises. the fates. andre. the chorus. i love them all. i'm such a whore for reoccurring lyrics. the strings! fuck capitalism! eva's emotions are just so fucking good. "you've already forgot?" holy shit. this shit hurted. the "ahh ooh"s are so good.
flowers. the intro <3. eva sounds so pretty. the fucking symbolism in this song is incredible. i'm gonna get into this in another brain dump bc it's a very sensitive topic. the fact that she can't actually fully remember orpheus makes me so sad. so pretty <3
come home with me (reprise). hell yeah another reprise. the way the music is much more upbeat when orpheus shows up. their excitement! eva's vocal emotions are literally so fantastic pls.

"young mannn" kill me patrick. train references! hell yeah persephone. the way andre gets louder when he says "raised up his voice." eva <3. reeve just always sounds so pretty. ohmygod the laugh. kill me good sir. mans straight up admits to owning people and is like "it's cool tho cause they signed a piece of paper. def not taking advantage of people that are literally starving or anything. it's fine." fuck you hades. go step on a fucking lego. orpheus is so sad :(
papers (instrumental). yes. sounds so good. i'm imagining an epic chase scene. the transition into nothing changes <3
nothing changes. respectfully? the fates could kill me any day and i'd thank them. the weather reference! that "anyhow" is so fucking good istg.
if it's true. another one of my favorites. pop off intro. the broken "is this how the world is?" sadly, yes. "but everybody knows that walls have ears." is literally such a powerful line to me for some reason. it does a great job of bringing in the chorus. and by calling the workers "walls" it shows that hades views them as "less than." they aren't even referred to as people. "what's the use of his backbone if he never stands upright." oh my god. because they literally cannot stand upright. anais mitchell is literally a fucking genius. fuck the 1%. gambling references! the chorus backing him is just so pretty. the way orpheus looks to the chorus for advice and support. "we're standing." ugh its so good.
how long. oh my fucking god. amber fucking gray. (that's it, that's the post). the way she sounds resigned/disappointed when she says "i've had enough" makes me so sad. there are no words to describe how i feel about 0:25 - 0:41. like their relationship is strained, and super mega fucked up, but it's obvious that they still care about one another. the emotion in their voices throughout this song is fantastic. the play on light and dark. also more bird references! how they view themselves/their self importance. hades is a most importantly king. persephone is most importantly a wife. it really show that hades views power as more important than anything else. "nothing comes of the songs people sing." holy fucking shit. cause their song is the "song of love," but they can barely stand each other and their relationship has fallen apart. persephone commenting on his love of power over his love of her. amber's voice during "the earth must die" is so nice and for what? god i love her. they sound so nice together <3
chant (reprise). another favorite hehe. the strings! it's all just so pretty. when the piano comes in i die a little. the self realization coming from the chorus when they're like "oh shit, this is wrong. i don't deserve to be treated like this." is so fucking fantastic. the "young mannn" again! hades really be like "manipulate her! make her depend on you financially! i've been ding this a while kid! i know how to successfully control women!" reeve sounds so pretty pls. the way that eurydice has basically become part of the chorus (since she's just another worker now). more self realization! the different ways that hades and orpheus view the "song of love." "sing before i kill you so i can use it to manipulate my wife and make her feel like shit." patrick's voice tho.
epic iii. reeve coming in with that falsetto like nobody's business. orpheus really about to bite you in the ass with your own damn song. amber gray <3. the "ooo"s in the background. the way the music picks up when reeve gets to the "la"s. it's just so fucking good. that falsetto again. orpheus really looked at the king of hell, a literal god, and said "i want to ruin him psychologically" and it fucking worked. which is some of my favorite irony because hades wouldn't have shit if it weren't for that fact that he's a good manipulator and takes advantage of the needy. that last line <3
epic iii (instrumental). i have no words for how fucking beautiful this is. i so desperately want an extended version. like for real love this so much. if i get married, i want this to be the song for the first dance.
promises. eurydice is so proud of him for finishing. the way that eurydice realized that she cares about him more that material objects. wind and weather references! "if we can do it so can they!" she sounds so excited. :( "hand-in-hand" lol nope. not them refencing wedding song, anyway the wind blows, and then giving their "i do"s. absolutely heart wrenching.
word to the wise. the fates. pls step on me ladies. the lyrics throughout this are so fucking good. lol hades being damned. cause he's the king of hell. honestly its solid advice tho. humans are really fucking stupid.
his kiss, the riot. give us them adjectives king. " how dare people want rights! >:(" hades is really trying to make himself the good guy rn. the music! 2:15 - 3:03 is so good pls. the lyrics are just so spectacular.
wait for me (reprise) (intro). hello again andre! hermes literally says "he's trying to psych you out and manipulate you. he wants you to doubt everything" and orpheus says "are you sure tho?" and then procedes to doubt everything. the way the music changes is <3. the song transition.
wait for me (reprise). my absolute fucking favorite song in this musical. the first fucking lyric is so good. it really sets an expectation for the song and i am not disappointed. lyrics that talk about how fucked up any single person's brain is are so fucking cool to me. god i love this song. how soft the first set of "wait for me"s are. the support/pressure from the chorus. the entire exchange between hades and persephone. the way amber's voice sticks out of the chorus. the fates coming in clutch again. train references! more brain talk! amber gray please end me. eva sounds so pretty. and the final note is so good!
doubt comes in. the long intro that builds up suspense. the first time that orpheus's "la"s aren't echoed by the chorus/music. wind! weather! the fates sound so pretty like always. reeve genuinely sounds so scared. the way the music picks up and the chorus joins in when eurydice starts singing. the music is so unsettling and i love it. god i love his voice. 3:44 - 3:57 always hits so different. you realize just how much she means to him. how it all goes to shit when the music reaches the climax. the fact that the music clashes on purpose. the sadness in their voices.
road to hell (reprise). it all comes full circle. god andre sounds so sad. the way you come to really hear the lyrics because there's no upbeat music to distract you this time, "its a tragedy" lol because the actual written story is a tragedy. "i learned that from a friend of mine" poor orpheus :(. the way the chorus slowly joins in and the music slowly picks up. the "can you feel it" is literally so fucking powerful. fuck yes amber. fuck it up queen. amber and eva sound so nice together. the "its a love song, its a sad song" is so sad. the final lyric is just. ugh.
we raise our cups. yes pls amber. this song is so pretty. good night queen.
