nobody asked for this, but here's my fan casting of SKZ members in Hadestown
with the announcement of the Hadestown pro shot finally being filmed, and with SKZ coming to North America this summer, Stray Kids and Hadestown have been living in my head rent free lately. I also recently had the realization that there are 8 leading roles in Hadestown and since there are 8 members of Stray Kids, the only logical next step in my stupid stupid brain was to figure out who would play what role if life was Glee and Stray Kids was doing the Hadestown episode. So without further ado:
Hades: Felix
This one I actually had to think about a little bit bc I could also see Bang Chan or Changbin in the role, but overall I think Felix is the best choice vocally speaking. He can hit those Patrick Page notes for sure. Just give the man some fake tattoos and put him in a suit. And maybe a skirt. Hades should wear skirts. Anyways
Persephone: Lee Know
Honestly the only real contenders for this role in my mind were Lee Know and I.N. and ultimately Lee Know won. Idk why, it just feels right.
Hermes: Changbin
TELL ME IM WRONG, I DARE YOU!! TELL ME IM WRONG!!! THIS IS A HILL IM WILLING TO DIE ON!! No but seriously this man would have the energy that we need from Hermes, think Melanie La Barrie Hermes.
Orpheus: Seungmin
I mean, who else? Who the fuck else??? Seungmin Wait For Me??? Seungmin If It's True????? Seungmin Epic III??????? We would DIE, we would DIE DEAD DECEASED but it would be okay!!!!
Eurydice: Han
This makes sense. It just makes sense. Give him a bad bob and put him in some overalls, that's Hanrydice. WAAAIIITTTT FOR MEEEE AND HOLD MY HAND NOW!!!
The Fates: Bang Chan, Hyunjin, and I.N.
AGAIN, YOU'RE GONNA LOOK AT ME AND YOU'RE GONNA TELL ME THAT I'M WRONG?????? In all seriousness tho, they'd eat this up. No crumbs.

Superhyped gor the Hadestown proshot but also super bummed because the Broadway cast just never quite hit the same for me as the off Broadway cast.
Exact opposite for Six though. The West End cast always had my heart so I guess it all evens out.

I’m a bit sad that they’re gonna film Hadestown but it’s with the original cast…
A recording already exists of those guys; I love them but can we not also have new people??

My biggest flex is that I was there for the London cast recording and I will also be at Hadestown for the proshot! Was able to win the ticket war yet again.

I started a newsletter on history, fantasy, and the stories we tell about ourselves (or good ol’ cultural mythmaking, to borrow a phrase from my academic days.) The first essay’s on Hadestown & Woody Guthrie, two subjects which I’ve been obsessively forcing my friends and loved ones to listen to me ramble about - and which will become only worse when the proshot comes out!!!
In all seriousness, seeing Hadestown in London over the summer reminded me what hope felt like. It was such a joy to write about it. <3 (and my favorite ornery old folkie!!)
(Fun fact: the lil doodle above is inspired by one of Guthrie’s illustrations from the first chapter of his memoir Bound For Glory, where he describes nearly getting thrown out of a boxcar while riding the rails)
How y’all feeling about the proshot filming??? I become more feral with every behind the scenes update we get 👀
(Alt text under the cut)
[ALT TEXT: Three images. Image 1 is the following section of the essay:
"The musical takes these bones and casts them in a setting like the Great Depression (1929-1933): Orpheus is a poor boy with a guitar, Eurydice is a hungry young woman in need of work, and Hades is the boss of a company town whose workers are employed in the construction of a never-finished wall.
The same threads which motivated Guthrie’s work run through the lines of Hadestown. “So Long, It’s Been Good ta Know Ya” (Guthrie) describes the Dust Bowl as not just bad weather, but cataclysmic—the end of the known world. The storm “dusted us over, an’ it covered us under / Blocked out the traffic an’ blocked out the sun”. Young lovers say their goodbyes instead of planning marriage, and the town preacher warns his parishioners this may be their last chance for salvation.
Eurydice’s complaints, in “Any Way the Wind Blows”, strike a similar chord for our modern climate:
Weather ain’t the way it was before Ain’t no spring or fall at all anymore It’s either blazing hot or freezing cold Any way the wind blows"
Image 2 shows a different section of the essay, as follows:
"Guthrie’s songs don’t flinch from the realities of the Great Depression, but they’re never without hope. Even “This Land Is Your Land” answers one of the verses cut from school recitals - where the singer sees a long line of hungry people at the relief office and asks “Is this land still made for you and me?” - with a resounding Yes.
“I hate a song that makes you think that you are not any good,” Guthrie wrote. “[…] I am out to fight those songs to my very last breath of air and my last drop of blood. I am out to sing songs that will prove to you that this is your world and that if it has hit you pretty hard and knocked you for a dozen loops, no matter what color, what size you are, how you are built, I am out to sing the songs that make you take pride in yourself and in your work. And the songs that I sing are made up for the most part by all sorts of folks just about like you.”
When you walk into Hadestown, there’s a good chance you know the story already. Myths get invented and reinvented and passed between cultures, the same way that folk music does. (I got into Guthrie through contemporary indie musician Mitski’s cover of Pete Seeger’s “Coyote, My Little Brother”.) Starting with a common understanding of the story lets you play with the beats. It lets you identify the ways that moments in history resonate with each other — today and the 1930’s and ancient Greece."
Image 3 is digital art, made to look like a charcoal drawing, of a young man in silhouette walking beside a railroad. He's silhouetted against the steam billowing from a passing train, with a guitar on his back and an old kerosene lantern in his hand, lighting the way.

Does anyone know why for the upcoming Hadestown proshot Jewelle Blackman, Kay Trinidad, and Yvette Gonzalez-Nacer weren’t invited to participate?
I‘ve been wondering the same thing as well. If anyone knows feel free to pitch in!
