cassidy’s function as the “shakespearean fool” character

o kay this is gonna be rambl-y bc i am half-awake, but enjoy some meta anyway: 

i’ve been trying to figure out what sort of tropes best fit/remind me of cassidy, and i came to the realization that his character type and arc fit very well into the realm of the “shakespearean fool.” mind you, cass is not the “fool” in the traditional sense (i.e., the fool character is often a character with very little power and is usually unable to force change upon their environment), but he makes up for it in sheer understanding. 

as noted by others, cassidy is perhaps the best at understanding human motivations of the trio and can become manipulative when pushed to a point. he actually has quite a bit of wisdom and knowledge he is 119 years old so one would hope so and has often acted as a sage of sorts to numerous characters (jesse, tulip, fiore, the guy in the indian costume in s1). though most do not heed his words (i’m looking @ you jesse), he does act as a confidant-- and so far, one that can be trusted. 

furthermore, i think it is also important to note that cass often grounds the events of preacher into our modern-day society. he is the one with the film/tv references and has found out most of his information in s2 from simply watching tv. this is similar to the classic “shakespearean fool” who almost breaks the 4th wall in a sense, bringing the audience’s attention to the thematic questions posed in the play. not to mention that cass rambled about the three stooges to denis, which obviously parallels the unholy trio’s current status, searching for god with nothing to guide them but intuition and genesis. 

when it comes to cassidy, i see him as a character who knows much more than he lets on. while he scorns the idea of being seen as a fool most of the time, he also understands how disarming his “junkie, lying vampire” persona may be to some people. his dress, appearance, and base personality all feed in to this persona that he weaves, and it is only in times of stress or despair that we see into the more analytical, calculating side of cass-- one of his many complex sides that i look forward to seeing later on as the plot progresses. 

if there’s one thing for sure, just as it was in shakespearean plays, it may prove useful to keep an eye out on the “fool” character cassidy, as his actions and words often act as a harbinger to later plot points and theme (i.e., i’m sure his arc of redemption and the follies of immortality which have been hinted at in the last few eps will be explored and act as a foil to jesse’s internal plights).

Mostly I collect vinyl records, but I have CDs as well.

I love to collect books about/by my favorites artists, but mostly, my jam is vinyl records. I have also been able to collect a few vintage pieces recently, like some music magazines from the 70s, and an ELP promo poster from Spain.

Paul McCartney in 2019!

6. If you could see one artist (or band) who is no longer alive in concert, who would it be?

Emerson, Lake & Palmer, or the original lineup of King Crimson.

Hmm, I don't really have one. I don't want to sully my music, I'm afraid I might not be able to listen to certain things if I associated them with bad or sad memories.

Too many to pick from! Some recent good ones that I've seen are Amazing Grace (Aretha Franklin) and Summer of Soul. Others: Paul McCartney - Wingspan, The Romantic Warriors series, David Gilmour - Wider Horizons, ELP On Tour (from Old Grey Whistle Test), Off the Charts - The Song-Poem Story, The Wrecking Crew, and What Happened, Miss Simone?

Again, there are so many to pick from...David Gilmour's Live at Pompeii is really amazing! Of course, the original Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii is excellent as well! ELP Pictures at an Exhibition, PFM + Pagani Piazza del Campo, Yessongs...

12. Do you prefer listening to playlists or full albums?

Usually, I like to listen to the full album, but occasionally I like to play my daily mixes on Spotify because I like to be surprised and discover new music!

In order. It is especially annoying when songs fade in/out to listen to them on shuffle!

oh, well... idk... like it’s that one, special feeling. it’s not only the power of music but band members and their characters too, they must be a decent human being. and honestly, it’s really hard to say which is my fav.

i’m not sure who is my fav rockstar (too much choice), but the most important thing is big, dark, curly hair.
