I wont cover ALL the bachelors and bachelorettes, just the ones who I have really strong headcannons for :)

(Most of these headcannons are HIGHLY influenced by my own music taste. A lot- if not all- of the artists I have listed are artists that I'm a fan of personally.)

Anyways. First off: I think Sebastian- in regards to goth culture- fits the description. I don't think he ever goes above and beyond with his fashion because of his depression (another hc of mine because I highly relate to him as somebody with depression), but he definitely leans more into that than he does emo fashion, that's for sure. He's highly nihilistic. He doesn't want to support the 'corporate fatcats' or big industries, instead self employed, and he hates every Joja gift. Overall there are MANY instances of Sebastian basically saying 'fuck the industry.' (We love him for that) Also, his thing with coffee and smoking is highly stereotypical goth shit. Though, when it comes to music, I definitely think he'd fuck with SOME goth bands very casually, like maybe a bit of Type O Negative, Christian Death, Birthday Massacre... but I think he tends to lean more towards punk/pop punk. Especially Green Day. (And, shamefully, Blink-182. He won't ever admit it, though.) I also think that Sam's music started accidentally influencing him. Like sometimes (a lot of the time) you'll catch him listening to rock, metal, alternative/art rock, and grunge. He got particularly attached to Rammstein, who Sam surprisingly doesn't actually fuck with very much. Also, hot take: I don't think he's emo. Some of the music he listens to (and some of the artists I've already names) COULD be argued to be emo, but he doesn't listen to like- EMO emo. I definitely think he casually likes The Get Up Kids, which ARE considered to be an emo band by some. It's a bloodbath tryna figure out the genre. Midwest emo, pop punk, regular emo... I dunno. I just think he likes The Get Up Kids.

Sam. Sam's music taste speaks for itself. He, as a character, is highly oriented around music and musical talent. I think he's huge on rock and grunge- like Nirvana, Foo Fighters, The Rolling Stones... all that jazz. He also likes metal bands, such as Judas Priest, Metallica, Black Sabbath (as well as Ozzie Osbourne as a standalone artist), Dio, System of a Down... all that jazz. He likes his music slightly hard but classy as well. I also feel like he would be big on Sublime. Idk. It just feels right. I also think he'd be casually into Midwest Emo, which he accidentally got Sebastian REALLY into for a bit. (Examples include The Front Bottoms, McCafferty, Origami Angel- great band btw, Modern Baseball, etc.) He'll sometimes go for some softer, electronic shit from time to time, like art pop/rock bands (so... Radiohead), but not super often. He ALSO accidentally got Sebastian into Radiohead. Like, Sebastian became a bigger fan than he did. Sam has a few guilty pleasures when it comes to music that he won't be very vocal about it, like some female country artists (Dolly Parton, Shania Twain, Carrie Underwood... stuff like that. He absolutely REFUSES to admit he listens to any of them.) He also probably dabbles in Weezer- which counts as rock but I felt I needed to put this at the end with the other guilty pleasures. (I could be projecting. I mean- hey. Look at my pfp.)

Abigail! (I love Abigail) She's into metal. Some heavy, screamo shit, but also some thrash metal. (She likes Judas Priest a lot. Could also be projecting, though. I fucking love Judas Priest.) I think she goes harder with her music than Sam and Sebastian do. She'd be the parent who picks their kid up from school absolutely BLASTING some metal. (For some reason I imagine it being Enter Sandman by Metallica in that scenario lmfao) She'll go for rock occasionally, something wilder like ACDC, but not as much.

(Ik a lot of the bands for The Trio overlap, but they're all really close and literally in a band. I think they would share a lot of music taste with each other. They are the local alternatives, after all.)

Emily is into stoner music. Like- Reggae, 60s rock and roll, Hip-hop, and indie. Her biggest bands/artists would be Sublime, The Beatles, Elton John, Bob Marley, Pink Floyd... stuff like that. I think she would also be into pop, but really eccentric pop, like Chappell Roan, Abba, Amy Winehouse, Whitney Houston, and Britney Spears. Perhaps Michael Jackson??? 👀👀

Haley is into 2000s pop. Kesha, Britney Spears, EARLY Taylor Swift (and ONLY early), Shakira, Beyonce... artists like that. Some music that she likes overlaps with Emily's, but then Haley is put off by the other music she listens to- or in her words: "hippy shit." There's a lot of Chappell Roan lover Haley talk, and I think it would be slightly true. She would find it weird and off-putting at first, but she would learn to secretly like it. Secretly.

Elliot is into classical music. Not orchestra, but very piano-y classical. He would also quite like folk. He could be persuaded into folky pop, like The Decemberists. He isn't really a music snob, but if you showed him a metal song, he would be quite confused. We love him anyway.

At last I am enabled HE IS MY FUNNY LITTLE GREEN GUY AND I LOVE HIM I am honored to be chosen as a certified appreciatior ANYWAY SO UM let me just explain like. What he is rlly quick because there are so many different types of guys in the whole bleach world

you have humans, who live in the world of the living and souls (dead people) who also live in the world of the living and then you have hollows which are like corrupted souls that the soul reapers gotta defeat to get them to love on to the next life (which is in the soul society)(the soul reapers also live there)(the soul reapers are also dead people)(it’s like a whole reincarnation thing)

the hollows live in this other dimension called hueco mundo they look like this (the guy on the left- hollows are more “monster-y” looking whereas arrancars are more human looking but they still have the holes where their hearts should be-hence the term hollow)

So these guys called arrancars (that’s what ulquiorra is!!!) they’re hollows that have been modified to be kind of…like a cross between a soul reaper and hollows because they have swords (soul reaper thing) but are also hollows. Basically like. You have a bear and your like let me give that bear a gun. Like that. The main antagonist is responsible for all that for reasons™️ but that’s a whole other thing in it of itself. But yeah he’s like an an evil henchmen.

but onto greater, more important things

ok completely on a surface level his charcter design is like. 10/10

I don’t know much abt charcter design but since his colors are limited he really like stands out (it’s part of the reason why I think kny characters have such good designs because they stick to the two main color plus accent color)

He’s mostly black n white with accents with green which is just so striking and the green tear makeup is just *chefs kiss* PLUS the combination of the traditional Japanese hakufu pants combined with the almost (not rlly sure how to put it) like European tail coat kind of deal he’s got going on really is such an interesting combination of two different cultural fashions. Ichigo (the guy on the right) has kind of a similar deal going on with the pants and the more western looking tuxedo looking deal and they’re design are supposed to Parallel each other for thematic reasons but PERSONALLY I think ulquiorra does it way better . But idk Maybe I’m biased!!

And there’s his other powered up forms which are just so cool

ok so now. Plot stuff

so basically his whole deal is that he’s a nihilist. Throughout his appearance he’s always like oooh nothing matters I don’t care blah blah blah despite the fact that he has emo make up. He does NOT put the emotion in emo. (Which, at least my impression of emo is about wearing emotions on your sleeve. I don’t know much abt emo as like a whole but if anyone has any like critique on my definition please let me know I’d love to learn more) My man is emo in style but is like yeah whatever I don’t feel emotions I don’t have a heart I’m not human don’t think of me as a human I’m a logical emotionless creature yadayada.

it’s such an interesting design choice to me because it really highlights how…hypocritical his worldview is. As the story goes on you can see his whole nothing matters deal kind of crack, towards his finally battle we see him get angry and surprised and then (spoiler alert) love right before he dies.

And you really can’t talk about ulquiorra without talking about orihime.

orihime was kidnapped basically by orders of the main antagonist because she has powers that he needs for reasons™️. It’s kind of a long explanation why so I’ll just leave it at that. But the whole reason Orihime is there was because she loves her friends, and she goes over to the side of the enemy because she didn’t want her friends to get hurt (basically the “bad guys” were like come with us or we’ll kill your friends and she was like. Well I guess I have to go because I love my friends) which is like the complete opposite of ulquiorra because he’s all like whatever friendship love and bonds are all bull. But as he interacts with her he gets (upset?curious? Not sure of the wording) about what it means to have a heart (or a bond with another person really). I just love how as we move through the arc we see him gradually more humanized, partly as a result of orihime being all like. You’re wrong things DO matter but also because he IS human in a way.

specifically there’s a scene in his backstory one shot where orihime catches him sleeping and brings him food and it just shows that yeah maybe he’s not technically a regular guy but he gets sleepy and needs a little snack!!! He’s grumpy about it but I just love how it portrays him in such a different way than we usually get to see him. (He’s embarrassed he’s so funny. “Ooooh I take naps and eat snacks 🙄so embarrassing” He’s so silly)

As he talks to orihime throughout this arc he gets CLOSER to understanding as his whole nothing matters deal keeps getting shut down by her when he tries to convince her that nothing matters. But he really doesn’t GET it until right before his death when he realizes what “the heart” is. Because orihime showed him humanity and kindness he’s like oooohhhh I get it now. But at the last second which just is so…cries

anyway. He finally realizes what it means to care about something as he dies and it’s so tragic because this is the first time he’s ever felt anything and now he’s going to die reaching out to her. It’s probably THE most tragic anime scene I’ve ever watched it kills me literally Everytime I watch it screaming crying throwing up. You know the deal!!!

Then after that whole arc is finished the author published this art . And look at him. He’s so silly look at him

Also idk if this is like ok to add & also probably worded horribly but to kind of piggyback off of this I feel like the “aesthetics” of subcultures have been narrowed into such tiny little boxes. Like when I was younger black jeans and a t-shirt were very much considered acceptable in emo, goth, grunge, or even punk subcultures. But now it feels like people are so picky about what is and isn’t the fashion. It feels like because of fast fashion people are so intensely elaborate about the aesthetics which like that’s fine if you want to go all out that’s totally cool, but it feels like everyone is expected to go all out all the time and that’s just so not what these subcultures are about. Especially bc majority of these subcultures were based around political ideology, music, and DIY culture.

Also it feels like people make micro labels for every tiny subset of a fashion aesthetic. Which we had to an extent with like pastel goth or nu goth or romantic goth, but it feels so weird and meaningless now. What is “clean grunge” “fairy grunge” “mermaid goth” “emocore” it’s just beyond me but that might just be me.

It feels to me like the labels are becoming more important than the subcultures themselves. Like back in the 2000s a lot of us would never even claim labels like that (partially out of fear of being called a poser and partially out of just simply not caring). We just kind of did what we liked and whatever label people chose to give us was like “okay cool whatever I guess but also I just like what I like”. Whereas I see so many posts that are like “am I emo? Am I punk? Am I goth? Is this okay for Jirai” like babe it’s really not that deep if you like it then you like it & just run with it.

I don't know quite how to articulate this so bear with me, but it feels like there's something about this era of fast fashion and social media that has robbed subcultures of an understanding of their own barriers and pushed people into aesthetic boxes that just aren't "real." I started considering myself goth age 12 because I listened to the music, and I liked the associated aesthetics. I was way too young for goth clubs and shows, and I couldn't dress goth for a variety of reasons. But nobody would've objected to that label to the degree that people would these days. "You don't HAVE to wear x fashion to be part of x subculture but why WOULDN'T you?" seems to be a prevailing idea. Because clothes are affordable now beyond DIY and require no skill and resourcefulness, and subcultures are more 2d and visually tethered to certain images than ever based on social media presences, and... Idk. there is just something depressing about this, you know? there are reasons beyond money why people might not wear certain clothes or wear them regularly. there are reasons beyond money why people might not want fast fashion. there are people who don't even have the money for fast fashion. there are people who have lives you will never understand, who love the same things you do, and shouldn't that be enough?

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I’ve never been a fan of long ass fake nails. I think this is a “me” problem, but I feel like they would be uncomfortable to wear and you wouldn’t be able to do certain things with them on. I’m somewhat of a tomboy myself, so I think this is where a bit of my own bias comes into play. Just put some acrylic on my nails, no need to do all of that extra stuff with me lol (I don’t even paint my nails either. The only color I’d paint them is black lmao)

Hiii!!! 🥰🥰💖 thanks for the ask!! And well, if you ask then I'll tell you a bit about me and my reasons to like so much Kanato!

What attracts me most about Kanato is his appearance mostly!! And I do not say that is the cute and his childish face, but for his aesthetics! His style, clothes, accessories, and well the iconic purple hair😩😩💜💜

Since I was a child I was extremely attracted by the purple color, a good example are the barbie movies where I was NEVER Barbie herself but her FRIEND in a purple dress KSKSKKS Not just on the barbie which I was a fan of, but anywhere where there was a character in purple I already looooved im just a weak for the purple color. Movies, animes, mangas, animations, cartoons: It was always purple.

Here are Yumi from Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi; MY QUEEN Ino Yamanaka from Naruto (since 9 yrs until this day im her biggest fan😭😭💜) ; Plum Pudding from Strawberry Shortcake; Barbie princess & Popstar; Viveca from Barbie and the 3 Musketeers ; Alexa from Barbie and the Diamond Castle grrr I just love girls and purple princess 😩😩💜😭

And coincidentally, Kanato has this exact same palette of purple colors yeah???? 💜💜😭 (despite being a "normal" girl and then talking ab a sick)

But beyond that, Kanato brings with it a more androgen and feminine appearance to a certain extent and come on, I'm a weak bi for this too. His eyes are soooo lovely, he must have such a sweet smell and such a delicate touch. Just imagining his soft, cold fingers I get so 💖🥰💖💖🥰🥰💕💖💖💕🥰🥴🥴🥴🥴🥴

Moreover, for having grown up as an emo addicted to black color I today greatly appreciate and gothic culture, a bit of pastel fashion too!! 🥰🥰 I love these pinterest Victorian outfits and if I could I would wear them until I die!! But as a 19 yrs in a tropical country with beaches, I will never be able to wear it because of the heat.

And well, I know Kanato would show up wearing lolita clothes but I'm not a big fan of that boy/girl childish aesthetic, and I prefer to imagine him just wearing more comfortable and softer black/pastel clothes. Something like pastel goth.

So well!!! To like Diabolik Lovers, each of us has to have peculiar and sadistic tastes to some extent, especially in the case of beautiful young vampires soooo to like strange, morbid, dubious, seductive characters and omg Kanato fits in that mainly 😱???!!!!! I Met him by anime in 2016 at my 13 years and i wasn't very interested, but at the age of my 17 years I saw him through the anime once again and those dark circles... the fangs... the blood... purple hair, the clothes and his voice... cmonnn his skin is almost gray and he's in love with death and dolls, he looks sick psycho and obssessive there's any way to like him even more??? Kkkkkk🤪🤪 idk i've always liked weird and eccentric characters more.

His voice is also a great... cosiness. I fell in love with his voice because I love singers of beautiful voices and songs, usually. Just an old to like orchestra and opera😓 let's not fail to notice that Kanato suits in that in therms of music, like the ones I mostly like that is "Nocturne" of Frédéric Chopin and "The nutcracker" of Tchaikovsky (the one the most suits Kanato 🗣️).

Kanato has one of the most yummy voices and grunts in the franchise and that I came to hear in all my life. It's so sweet and smooth while it manages to sound wicked and dirty 😩 It's mesmerizing. He's tasty asf 💜 I could hear him sing without complaining in no time.

Now finally, a question!! You know that saying where the characters we like the most are the ones who look like us?? Yeah!! That one!

I am OBVIOUSLY not like Kanato, nor do I share the same experiences and traumas as him. But I don't know, I like the "healthy" and sweet mature part of him, because that's where I most identify. Mostly the arts part, make works and sculptures, sing, sew and practice handmadet 😭😭💕💕💖💖💖💖💖💖💖

The modus operandi of leanan sídhe is that they are attracted to artists, and become beautiful muses who offer inspiration to an artist in exchange for their love and devotion; although the supernatural affair leads to madness and eventual death for the artist. Maybe Marc is obviously in love with Nathaniel, but won’t pursue him out of fear of the curse that fall on lovers of leanan sídhe. This has amazing potential for an angsty love story. With that being said I’m also considering a baku since they are known to eat nightmares, which would be a good contrast to the Alp’s ability to create nightmares

Kim's still technically a hatchling according to Kraken biology, so he's a two-year-old prodigy in the eyes of his parents

He has trouble walking when he's underwater for so long, so Mondays are always hell for him

She can emit a purple inhalant from his skin that puts people to sleep. This only happens when she gets scared or angry

Daughter of the Invisible Man, Sabrina's clothes are kind of flashy just so she can stand out a bit. Her legs become translucent at the knee

She can turn invisible at will, and this extends to anything she's touching

Sabrina turns invisible mostly to get away from Chloé when she's on another tirade or to mess with people she doesn't like

Chloé:

She's a literal witch who casts spells on her classmates to mess with them and lords it over their heads that her mother heads the most exclusive witch coven

also idk how to really explain it but many things, particularly in emo culture, at that time were like... schrodinger’s gay... it was like. you WANTED things to be gay but knew better than to like, believe it, and just the like willingness of pop culture figures to Play with it, and the experience of having fandoms or whatever be excited by it along with you, was basically good enough... i feel like even though i was literally into them at the time and was openly bisexual and also clearly now am trans i like didnt even really comprehend how like gay/gender mcr was until i. saw people talking about it on tumblr like it was kind of a moment of Huh... So it wasn’t like, entirely in my head... does that make any sense. idk how much this was like a matter of the culture at the time (yknow, back when we didnt have gay marriage or like, performative wokeness) objectively vs my own weird lens on it due to not knowing i was trans yet but. Yeah

i think maybe the part that’s difficult to untangle is that like, there is a distinction between ‘doing things that will get you called gay’ and ‘doing things that ARE gay’ and the category of ‘things that will get you called gay’ was so broad and volatile back then. so yeah there were loads of emo bands with dudes who would do ‘things that will get you called gay’ aka wearing makeup, tight pants, singing a certain way, having lyrics about your Feelings. but many of those dudes would let it be called Guyliner, and their Feelings lyrics were still always about girls (and still had the capacity to be misogynist and/or violent), and just generally you could tell that even though they were willing to get Called gay they werent. vs there were other people who didnt like, assert masculinity in the same way, and were noticeably more comfortable in that gnc emo Look than some other guys were (and didn’t abandon it when they got more successful lol), and had less-straight or actively gay lyrics... but like. idk i think at least to me it still just came off like... ‘well i like that these guys arent being distractingly tryhard masc’ and that was it, rather than registering as ‘oh this is gay for real. youre not just like hoping it is or projecting like it’s actually there’ lmao. 

and so i think maybe if youre younger and dont Remember the 2000s like that, you look at the entire scene and youre like well none of these celebrities are like flag-carrying LGBT Activists now, so all of that was Intentional Corporate Queerbaiting, or something... or like that’s not even what that op is saying huh. like they think the specific purpose of mcr (or, im guessing, emo in general) was to like Steal Queer Aesthetics and sell them to the public...? and like, sure, the whole Emo Boys Kissing thing generated profit but in the form of convincing guys who did not want to kiss boys to just dress similar to boys who kiss each other. the only people who actually carried on that part of the trend were like. people with actual gay desires. everyone else was just like being cishet in their emo jeans and feeling very proud about how counterculture they were for letting people call them gay for wearing emo jeans. 

and the homoeroticism and androgyny in emo didnt just. come from nowhere??? it wasnt made up by marketing. if you wanted to accuse a band of selling a gay aesthetic in a straight way you have to go WAY farther down the chain of influence, like when you would end up briefly seeing Guyliner on bands that were making like, cheap top 40 butt rock for dads, because it did eventually become like defanged enough that it was like ‘this is just the thing to do if youre Alternative’ but. actual emo, especially early 2000s emo, especially early 2000s emo boys who were actually willing to kiss boys, were not the ones selling it in a straight way... they were the ones who were (As many gay people are) trendsetting and interesting enough to prompt other people to (whether earnestly or not) take on similar fashion and behaviors in order to like, form community. and that community of ‘people with an Alternative and often gay fashion and music sense’ just happened to get big enough to turn into a money thing

and again, getting mad about emo queerbaiting in 2021 is just completely fucking absurd because everyone at the time was so like cautious and defeatist that even gay people who wanted it to be gay didnt like believe it might actually be gay. this is why i cant stand queerbaiting discourse like bro at the end of the day no matter what it’s just gonna be about You and what You’re bringing to it and you could very easily be overlooking some important shit that’s, yknow, actually there, in the course of chasing after some imagined perfect reward. *2000s internet voice* End rant!

Just out of curiosity, did you read JK's essay? I don't support everything in it but many parts resonated with me. Not to mention the horrific online abuse hurled at her, especially the countless, countless "choke on my dick" phrases thrown at her which are so violently misogynistic, it left me with a deep seated feeling of not only discomfort but fear as well. Idk I guess I just felt safe sending this because your blog seems more open to discussion from the other side instead of instant cancel.

i’m glad you think so about this blog and i hope that remains the case.

i didn’t have a chance to read JK’s essay until today (my previous ask about her was written before that) but here are some very, very imperfect thoughts on it:

the essay confirmed my previous take that she has inoculated herself against certain outside arguments but it’s also made me wonder about JK’s understanding of gender and sex. She is very attached to “natal women” and calling all people who menstruate “women” because of “common experiences”, despite the fact that her beloved de Beauvoir, whom she quotes in the essay extensively, acknowledged that “woman” is a social construct. JK herself at one point complains about having to comply with the rules of femininity while growing up and how it made her want to stop being female, so what is the truth? She argues that young girls shouldn’t be thinking about transitioning just because they are made to hate their femaleness but that’s!!! exactly what!!! pushing the term “woman” as sacrosanct does to girls!!! most of what JK felt in her childhood was the kind of misogyny which connects women strictly to their uterus. it made being male a better alternative precisely because of the gate-keeping of penis/vagina. a young girl who acted like a tomboy, for instance, would be criticized for trying to deny her sex, because deep down her biology still made her a “woman”. both sex and gender cannot be divorced from socio-cultural realities, because we act with our bodies and embody what we act. so, if we expand what it means to be a “man” and a “woman”, we liberate, not confine. JK wants young people to feel free to be whoever they want to be, but they must be called “women” when discussing menstruation or else (i won’t even go into the obvious addition that many cis and trans women exist who cannot or no longer menstruate).

Now, she does bring up some fair points about cancel culture and freedom of expression that I will level with, but the problem is that the nuancing she is trying to achieve also serves as weirdly specific dog-whistling. So let me address that:

(warning: spoilers for the Cormoran Strike series)

Right off the bat, we have this explanation added in her intro: 

“On one level, my interest in this issue has been professional, because I’m writing a crime series, set in the present day, and my fictional female detective is of an age to be interested in, and affected by, these issues herself (...)”  

and already, i’m asking questions. how is Robin Ellacott, one of the protagonists of the Strike series, “affected" by these issues, personally? she’s “of an age” to...what? be gender critical? there’s not a lot of that in the novels (unless you count Robin being tall and knowing how to drive well being framed as anti-girly...).  How does crime relate to it? How is she connected to this really? 

the real connection JK wants us to see because she’ll reveal it later in the essay is that Robin was r*ped in college. she’s a sexual assault survivor, which must make her critically engaged with the fate of trans women because....because underneath JK’s empty statement about her female detective....is the correlation that men “disguised” as trans women can perpetrate the same sort of horrific abuse.  she keeps making this correlation throughout the essay.

Here she talks about various people who’ve reached out to her:

They’re worried about the dangers to young people, gay people and about the erosion of women’s and girl’s rights. Above all, they’re worried about a climate of fear that serves nobody – least of all trans youth – well.

And again here:

“So I want trans women to be safe. At the same time, I do not want to make natal girls and women less safe. When you throw open the doors of bathrooms and changing rooms to any man who believes or feels he’s a woman – and, as I’ve said, gender confirmation certificates may now be granted without any need for surgery or hormones – then you open the door to any and all men who wish to come inside. That is the simple truth.”

This one is my favorite because it’s so twisted (here she’s listing her charity work):

“The second reason is that I’m an ex-teacher and the founder of a children’s charity, which gives me an interest in both education and safeguarding. Like many others, I have deep concerns about the effect the trans rights movement is having on both.”

What JK wants to spell out with these “common sense” arguments is that she fears that trans women are predatory, and the most convincing argument she can bring, ultimately, is that she herself has been the victim of sexual abuse and therefore, that potential fear never goes away. That’s a very dangerous leap to make. The climate of “fear” she mentions is also connected to cancel culture, of course. She fears women won’t be able to express their opinions online without receiving various amounts of vitriol. But you see how she has merged all three issues together? So that if you agree with one, you must agree with the others. Because yes, cancel culture often goes too far, and yes it is a real issue, but to say that the trans community shutting her down foments the same atmosphere of “fear” as boogie trans women hurting children in bathrooms and her being abused by her cis husband… that’s a veeery slippery slope. Instead of sticking to “freedom of speech” and whatnot, she keeps correlating these issues that should not be correlated (some of them being false issues, as well).  

Is there too much opprobrium around discussions of trans identity? Yes. Are there worthy discussions to be had about young women, homophobia and gender dysphoria? Absolutely. Can being trans become a fashionable trend/identity among kids, like the bygone goth and emo labels? Sure, but these discussions shouldn’t be had at the expense of trans people who have to constantly prove that they “mean” it. Because by stringing up all these issues together, JK is saying “the kids don’t know any better, and the adults are faking it”. Yes, cancel culture is impeding dialogue, yes, we shouldn’t shy away from discussing young teens’ identity problems, but if you pile up all of these things in a giant “trans women are the problem and they might be predatory too” milkshake, you won’t get anywhere.

I want to come back to this quote:

Beyond the (in my opinion) not very tasteful enumeration of things she’s done to help, JK’s mention of “education” there is veeery interesting. On the one hand, she probably feels that schools will try to censor “free speech”, but on the other hand, I bet she’s also concerned schools will not do enough censoring, so that impressionable kids become pressured into adopting a trans identity. You see how it flips on a dime? What does she ultimately want children to learn about this? Does she want them to be kept in the dark completely? Does she want them to be allowed to critique or invalidate trans identities without being censored? On this second point, things get complicated. Schools and institutions will naturally censor free speech.  Kids are there to learn how to express that free speech; they will be told “hey, don’t say that to your colleague, it’s not very kind” or “you need to structure your argument appropriately instead of just saying “I don’t like it””. Is there room for criticism in how schools operate that benevolent censorship? Obviously. Hell, Foucault & co. have been talking about this for decades. So what does this argument about education ultimately mean? What are we protecting the kids from? Imo, it goes back to that covert argument about sexual violence.    

Since I’m a teacher too, I’ll talk about my own experience: I brought some texts to my undergrad class about the trans experience with the goal of 1) building empathy, because literature is the grand unifier of experience and 2) showing different literary perspectives which i also included within literary theory. ultimately, the trans experience is about being human. we were learning about being human, nothing more, nothing less. if younger kids end up treating it as a fad it means that a) they need more, not less education,  b) parents and schools should work together to make them understand that being trans is not the same as being “emo”, for instance. this partially resembles the trend of white kids adopting black culture just because it’s cool, but not actually engaging with the black experience. who do you sanction for this? black people? because in this analogy, the trans community should be responsible for children not benefiting from education and parental support.

oh, I know what JK is saying. the trans community is responsible for shutting down conversations about this. it’s part of the general climate of tiptoeing around trans issues. yes, here I can agree with her that Twitter discourse either helps build sympathy or loathing for the “cancelled” person instead of seriously grappling with what that person has done. it’s the nature of Twitter and I hate it, but to go from that to saying women and young girls are in danger from other “fake” women really undermines her own argument. There are normal pitfalls as we try to incrementally do some good in this world. Cancel culture and the deplatforming and ruining of lives of certain individuals will not promote the cause and is certainly to be frowned upon, but JK will be absolutely fine. there are hashtags right now like “istandwithJK” and there’s a slew of people who support her. the misogyny she faces is deplorable, but we shouldn’t conflate valid criticism with trollish vulgarities. I don’t want to minimize the dangers of online culture; I know people have lost jobs and livelihood, but that is a discussion to be had under different parameters, admitting the responsibility of both parties (for example, maya forstater realizing that maybe saying some hurtful things about public figures and proudly talking about the “delusion” of transwomen will come back to bite her in the ass) and the fact that under capitalism, your job is always at the whim of appearances and simulacrums. essentially, you are the job. this is a state of things that deserves a larger discussion not on the back of the trans community. should we live in a world where you are allowed to say anything, free of consequences? some of us do, because we can say whatever we want in our head, in our room, in our house (other ppl aren’t so lucky), but the trouble starts in the public sphere. even if we wanted to build a public sphere where everything goes, we’d be at each other’s throats in five seconds anyway because we’re human. the most we can do is educate and correct where we can.  “facts don’t care about your feelings” discourse is often not informed by facts at all and forgets the vital importance of feelings.

anyway, that’s my incomplete take. still lots to think about and debate. ultimately, i think any fair points JK brought up were tainted by other bad-faith arguments and i wish she’d use this time to self-reflect because this isn’t a topic that should be breezed past in 3k words. nor should young trans ppl be called “adorable” (facepalm). i myself have many questions and constantly grapple with all of this, but since she’s a writer (and for better or worse, i still like her books), she is in a perfect position to investigate the matter with kindness and stop giving ultimatums. and i hope this post fosters discussion and doesn’t shut anyone down.

( forgot to mention that other nifty subplot in the Strike series about these really unlikable kids who are transabled and experience BID ( Body integrity dysphoria)  and want to have a disability. Strike is super-offended by them since he’s genuinely disabled and we as readers are meant to think they’re real pieces of shit, and while transableism is suuuuper complicated and my thoughts on it vary wildly, i do think those BID kids also stand in for other folks in her mind..again, food for thought.)

What would your ideal weekend getaway look like?: Road trip to Anchorage and staying at my mom’s cousin’s estate in the mountains. I only got to go there a few times and the view is absolutely captivating. You can see the waters, the city, all the lights.. fuck I’d love to draw that.

Just being in a drawing simulation where I can run around and create anything and everything around me. But if we’re talking actual worlds.. I’d probably love to be in Avatar The Last Airbender’s world. I love that series so much. 

What room in your house most represents who you are as a person?: The Office. It’s got art supplies, our gaming PC, all of my schoolwork/homework, the drawing tablets.. 

How clean a person are you?: Tbh I am pretty clean, it’s just cleaning huge messes/unpacking that I hate.

If you could only eat at one restaurant for the rest of your life, what would it be?: Fuck. Hahaaaaa. I’d probably love to just sit and eat at the Family Diner. I love their Reubens. 

What is something about your personality that you like? Don’t like?: I like that people feel comfortable running to me when they need a friend. I don’t like a lot about me, though.

What would your friends be surprised to learn about you?: I am ambidextrous and I know German/Englisch and some French! I want to learn Norwegian even more and Gaelic!

Tb to when someone brought up Magnus and Alec picking up each others habits and Matt said Alec wouldn't wear makeup and stuff. Sir, if Magnus asked him to he absolutely would, even if it's only a little. He can't say no to the most beautiful man in existence, he's not that strong. Also the idea of Alec wearing subtly pretty things because Magnus thinks he'd look nice and it makes him happy is cute. And maybe I associate pretty things with being happy. Idk where I'm going with this, sorry :/

dont apologize!! i actually love this ask, and it made me thing of pretty things being, like, lowkey a form of love language for magnus?

like look we all know about how magnus uses pretty things to armor up, be it his clothing, his tasteful apartment, even his fancy dates - he surrounds himself with this air of refinement and taste, and it makes him feel in control, and safe, and he can both hind behind it and draw strength/inspiration from it, to keep his front running, you know what i mean? it makes him feel safe, and grounded

there's plenty of on the nose examples about this (the way he struggled to keep himself pretty when he lost his magic, look at me, can you honestly say you like this?, a tiger has stripes, i have eyeliner, etc) but a more subtle example that i only recently noticed is when Lorenzo gives him his magic transfusion. the first thing he does is to change his clothes/style, and like he could have gone for anything to make sure it was working, but he chose to change his clothes, because this was not just about checking that it worked, but proving to himself that it was real, that he was safe now, and what better way to do that than completely change his outfit? immediately he feels more calm, in control, its his first instinct and i think that says a lot

so like in a way making the people he loves pretty, sometimes, feels like he's doing something to protect them too? like you look at raphael's outfits and there's a lot of stuff that looks suspiciously like Magnus' stuff, and obviously Raphael doesn't bother with fashion as much as Magnus (doesn't wear accessories, etc) and also when he went to Detroit he was always wearing jeans and t-shirts so like. i get the distinct impression that all his vests and nice fitting pants and all that stuff were gifts from Magnus. and they all have the same vibe, dark, covering most of his body, very serious and edgy-looking, just like Magnus' clothes on s2 and s3, when things were the hardest for him. so what if he bought/gave Raphael these clothes because he felt like he was helping protect him?

or when alec was like "id rather have my own clothes" magnus' instant reaction was to go and summon them, and while yes that obviously has to do with his overeager to help/make others comfortable thing, i think it also speaks to the simple fact that this matters to him

(sidenote: with him being trans this makes even more sense, because Magnus is acutely aware of how important it is to present himself the way you want/mean to, how it can quite literally be life-saving, how it can make such a difference to your comfort and well being. so yeah)

and so it would make sense that sometimes he expressed love/care through stuff like this, like helping Alec with his suit before a particularly important clave (or even family) meeting, adding in small accessories to help him feel more confident, etc; or when theyre going to pandemonium, sometimes doing his eyeliner, or undoing the buttons of his shirt, or just generally trying to make him look more club-ready so he feels more comfortable? or when Madzie hits a particularly important milestone he gets her new clothes, etc. and he likes taking Alec on fancy dates around the world, showing him the riches all around, because obviously he loves it, loves the different cultures and aesthetics and tastes, but also just as a way to sooth both of their nerves and have them both feel a little grounded. like just using these small details as a way to ensure that the people he loves are protected, and ready, and taken care of. and they all see what he's doing, and let him, and treasure it, because if it matters to Magnus it matters to them. and in return, they also give Magnus stuff like hoodies and sweatpants and comforters to remind him that he doesn't need to be in full armor all the time, that he also gets to relax and that he deserves to feel safe and not like he needs to have his arsenal at the ready, and wow im weirdly emo about this didndkjdndodm
