It’s been said a billion million times but why do people think ‘Edelgard wants a meritocracy’ is a gotcha? She grew up under feudalism. All three lords are literal monarchs. Why would modern day real world criticisms of meritocracies be at all relevant to her as a character? Why does Dimitri get a pass for believing in the divine right of kings, but Edelgard is problematic because she didn’t invent democracy from a system of feudal lords?
I’m a history major, and I actually love post canon fics that deep dive into the politics of Fòdlan. And it’s actually a bit of a pet peeve of mine when people write Edelgard’s government as perfect. It feels unrealistic having her perfectly reform the government after years of corruption, and there’s absolutely going to be a ton of political unrest, especially in verses where Faerghus and/or Leicester were annexed. The principle criticism of meritocracy is that without social welfare it becomes an aristocracy. Seeing Edelgard’s government confront that is cool and interesting (and is touched on in canon but no one talks about that). If people want to write a more fantastical or idealistic take on it, that’s fine, but it’s also not my cup of tea.
But, it’s equally annoying when people see said problems and just come to the conclusion that she’s dumb for trying to change society at all and we should all just settle for theocratic monarchist feudalism because the good nobles will decide to give the peasants more rights someday because they’re so nice. Okay.

Idiocracy (2006) 🍕
As much as you can giggle and appreciate the sentiment, this movie is ultimately more cringe than fun. The Trump presidency comes pretty close to Camacho’s (Terry Crews), considering it was 10 years before it does get Idiocracy points for going there. Still, the social commentary is a little too simplistic for the depth of the topic.

Idiocracy was supposed to be satire not a prediction
Tumblr media
Banning discourse and books is how conservatives cancel intellectual and emotional growth.
The Right Wing has stunted themselves into irrelevance. Power only lasts so long. Republicans have no long-term solutions. They have reduced the complex evolving world into simple dog whistles that trigger regressive feelings and inferiority complexes.
