my review of the critically acclaimed movie hot to trot (1988)

with a record breaking 0% yes ZERO PERCENT on rotten tomatoes (proof below) you can'ter deny that this movie is a stable for any list of the worst movies of all time.

featuring cringeworthy celebratory dance sequences, hairdos, and a whole scene where he does the cliche climbing around on the edge of a really tall building, leading man bobcat goldthwait did his absolute damnedest with what he was given. the horse is not funny and the voice actor sounds like a failed radio comedian. the antagonist is annoying and punchable in the worst way. the movie is cut REALLY BADLY-- scenes that needed a little bit to sink in get cut short half a second too early. there are unnecessary and confusing sound effects only sometimes, not even through the whole movie, in the weirdest spots!! according to interviews this movie put him in "comedy jail" and led him to deciding he was not cut out to be an actor but rather a director, just so he could make sure something like this shitshow never happened again (only the first part of that is true lol but come on). to top it all off this movie features some casual assault with a woman forcing a kiss on the main character (like why do people think this is funny??), and, by nature of being an animal movie in the 80s, pretty blatant animal abuse. so does it deserve the 0%? yeah. yeah it really does. oh did i mention also that it implies dead horses are reincarnated into horseflies? yeah. um what the fuck. also the blow up horse sex doll they never mention again.

anyways i'll play devil's advocate for a bit. goldthwait was nominated for worst actor for this movie and i absolutely have to disagree. for what he was given (NOTHING!) he DOES create a likeable character. virginia madsen as allison (😳) is probably the best actor in this movie. she plays a coworker that pretends to like fred (the main character) just because he's suddenly getting lucky on the stock market, but then grows to genuinely like him despite how fucking WEIRD he is and the fact that his best friend is A HORSE! and in the end they enter a horse race together and win blah blah blah she's really cute and sweet and excited. anyways. so if you've seen anything of goldthwait's from this time period you know that he's doing this screamy, stuttery sort of awkward act that was a byproduct of like, 80s comedians just thinking screaming was funny for some reason and also being chronically nervous about performing and using it as a sort of defense mechanism. for the faint of heart it could be a huge turn off, i can see that! but seriously, worst actor, because of a bit directors had him keep cause it made people laugh?? he creates what is honestly an enjoyable character that you feel bad for, you root for, you laugh at how dumb he is, you feel for him trying to impress this girl, you just want him to end up happy. i mean that's mediocre acting at worst. idfk. bro if anything the horse's voice actor should've been nominated for worst actor. apparently after the script had been rewritten for him bc the previous horse guy sucked ass so bad they had to scrap his lines, john candy IMPROVISED most of the new script anyways. so if the movie fucking sucks maybe it's that guy's fault.

anyways! to keep the tradition of this movie being rated disgracefully low, i give it .5 out of 5 stars. but fred and allison will forever hold a very special place in my heart where they hang out with their newfound horse buddies, all watching shitty cable tv on their farmhouse porch <3
