I have a local cryptid that I've seen about twice. Nobody who believes me can understand what it looks like, and everyone else just thinks I'm crazy.
Before you get super excited, I want to let you know that it's some sort of bug or animal. It's not extra terrestrial or monster-esc, it's just a really weird bug.
TW for vague descriptions of dead animals
Several things to get out of the way before I can describe it to you.... I live in Michigan, so anything that doesn't live around here is out of the question... and I collect bones from dead animals.
Ok, now the describing. About a year ago I was out tending to my maceration station (the place I keep my roadkill so that the bugs can eat away the bits and I can collect the bones once they're done) when I spotted this.... thing.
It was about four inches long, two inches wide. It had wings, and was flying like how a humming bird would do. Sort of hovering and dashing around. It's abdomin had two bright yellow lines and the shape of it reminded me of a wasp. It's face looked like a butterfly's face, with a probiscus and those weird shaped eyes. It had six legs, but when it landed the wings didn't stop flapping. The wings themselves were short and I couldn't get a good look at them because they never stopped moving, but they could have been a different color than the rest of it. I think it's main color was black but I can't quite remember.
I ran inside to grab a jar to catch it, but it was gone when I came back. I remember researching bugs, butterflies, humming bird moths, beetles.... none of them matched what I saw. And if they came close, none of them ate dead things.
That's right. It eats dead things. Today, I saw it again. I didn't have my phone (a mistake I'll try not to make again. I need a picture of this thing.) I watched it scout out the best place to land, and when it finally did, it unfurled its probiscus and started drinking.
I had a jar this time... (I wanted to catch some American carrion beetles to pin) but I was kinda scared of it. When it saw me trying to catch it, it CAME TWARD ME and started loudly buzzing. When I backed off of it, it flew away.
I'll update with pictures if I ever manage to get some. But it could be a year before I ever see the thing again.

tfw an ellis peters book has not one, but two, and perhaps as many as three, noble and well-meaning but ill-used men who have taken up false names and identities, and subsequently come to seek shelter, comfort, and resolve in the neighborhood of the abbey

Found a mystery bone on the beach! Appears to be a mammal vertebrae. I thought it might've been a seal, but someone on iNaturalist suggested a cetacean. If any bone detectives would like to weigh in, I'm curious!

my naming scheme for the resurrectionists causes me undue stress a lot of the time but when it works it Works
#edgar mortis is obv edgar allen poe + latin word for death. and his surname plays off the fact that there are four other resurrection men#only identified by their surnames which are pallor livor rigor and algor. rigor mortis should be easy to clock but the rest are all stages#of death as well when you attach -mortis to the end of them. which cements edgar's identity as a resurrection man even when he's farrr too#consumed by morana's world of magic and mystery to be actively working.#morana faust is a slavic death goddess + faust. the most famous necromancer in all of fiction. once again her surname cements her identity#as a necromancer specifically even when she gets swept away by unrelated magical happenings#nine and shi aren't their real names but their identification numbers are 9444999 and 4999444. 9 and 4 are both associated with death and#each of their numbers are the other's but reversed. also nine was a classical composer in life and there's a superstition that classical#composers will not live to write their 9th symphony (he sure as hell didn't lol) so it's fitting that he's the one who ended up with the#nickname. abberline isn't his real name either so he doesn't count. valdís has ancient norse for 'death' (val) + 'dis' (goddess) despite th#name not actually being used for any actual death goddess and her surname toth is likely derived from a medieval german word for death#her name isn't glaringly out of place with the rest of the cast but doesn't immediately let you catch on to her whole deal#which is good bc valdís is meant to sort of blend into the backround of reader's minds until The Reveal.#mara is a minor hindu goddess of death and her surname grave is. well. self explanatory. i tried to give the more non-magical side of londo#more straightforward names to contrast with some of the others and obv her dad was created before her and dr grave seemed like a good name#for someone who only popped up in the story while he was hiring professional grave robbers (now he pawns that task off on mara lol)#ereshkigal kore is just queen of the underworld + queen of the underworld but def has a very grandiose feel which is good bc that's#absolutely the vibes she should be giving off. all her servants' names boil down to figures associated with the greek + mesopotamian#underworlds. mainly attendants of aforementioned goddesses. which fits bc they all serve her#but i'd like to give special consideration to the maid trio here bc they're a set of triplets. and their last name is cerberus.#which famously had 3 heads. and the older two feature a similar naming scheme as persephone + eurydice (they even both end in the same e#sound) but the youngest's name is aisha which means 'living' or 'alive'. and obv her departure from the naming scheme makes her more easily#differentiated from her sisters + more memorable in the long run which is good bc she's the most important maid but it also gives me room t#have a 'my name means alive but she's named for the queen of the underworld so i'm willing to not live up to my name if it means being#closer to her' moment w a shitton of lilies in frame in case it isn't clear to anyone what's going on ('her' means eresh not persephone btw#and then there's dysmas. the patron saint of undertakers. which fits bc catholic. and sanson. as in the executioner. for a character heavil#inspired by the nasuverse's church executioners like kirei and ciel#rosette comes from the rosette nebula which looks like a skull. hayden is from one of my kids at work who said that next time i wrote a#murderer into something i had to name them after her so. here you go hayden. you get to be the cannibalistic child. (the topic came up when#i had to make a murder mystery for class so i stole the names from my kids and i told the ones whose names i used abt it later and she was

Friday mystery object #460 answer
The answer to a down-at-heel mystery object from an absolute unit.
Last week I gave you a somewhat challenging bony mystery object to have a go at identifying: The first challenge is recognising the type of bone. It’s not part of the axial skeleton (like the skull, vertebrae, ribs, etc) and it’s not one of the long bones, which are very distinctive.bits of the appendicular skeleton (which includes the pelvis, shoulders and limbs). So that leaves the distal…

Does anyone know what this might be?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've been scratching my head trying to figure this one out. It's not any weed I recognize, and the internet seems to think it's Dill, but the way it's flowrr buds look is all wrong and leaves, while similar, aren't quite right. It's growth habit is straight up like a stick and it's flower stalk reminds me of Lupin or Delphinium- though I don't think it's either of those.

Phantom Academy
DP x DC Prompt
A mysterious island housing an academy had mysteriously popped up in the bay that separates Gotham and Metropolis. There was nothing that showed how it came to be, no strange energy spikes, no noises in the night, no light show in the night either, and when the the Watchtower showed the satellite view from above, it wasn't there one second, but there the next.
The next day from after it arrived, ads for the building, Phantom Academy, began to pop up across both cities and across the television on commercials for further away cities.
It didn't take long for people to start sending their kids to the Academy, as it's a mostly free admission, and if you aren't close enough to send your kid(s) there? The Academy provides transportation for the kid(s) that get to the Academy on time, with tech that's much more advanced than the Justice League and the Bats tech as well.
From what the League could acquire about the Academy's staff, they are people that haven't existed before the day the Academy arrived in between Gotham and Metropolis.
The Principal of the Academy, Daniel Nightingale, who runs both the Academy and two classes, Chemistry and Engineering. Jasmine Nightingale, the vice principal, and the councilor for students to consult in with problems they have of any kind. Tucker Foley, the teacher for Computer Science, and the one who supposedly runs the cyber security for the Academy. Samantha Manson, the Gardening teacher, and a Meta with plant powers who isn't afraid to hide her powers. Paulina Sanchez, the coach for the cheerleaders of the Academy who is aided by Star Anderson. Dash Baxter, Gym Teacher, and coach for the football team, the Specters. Wesley Weston, another gym teacher, and coach to the Academy's basketball team. Valerie Grey, the self-defense instructor for the Academy and the one in charge of the security for the Academy. The Justice League couldn't get any information on the rest of the staff for the Academy (because of the fact that the rest of the staff are Ghosts and are in the process of getting identification for them).
Ember is the music teacher, Lunch Lady is the Foods teacher, and, obviously, the Lunch Lady, Clockwork is the History and English teacher, Pandora helps Valerie for the self-defense classes, Undergrowth helps Sam in her gardening classes, Nocturne runs naptime for any little kids attending the academy, Frostbite is the on site doctor for the Academy, Technus helps Tucker for both Computer Science and the cyber security, Boxy manages the boxes in the storage areas for the Academy, Skulker helps Valerie with security, Walker is the detention teacher, Ghost Writer is the librarian, and Fright Knight is the hall monitor.
The Justice League needs to find out what the intentions of the Academy staff are because Batman is too paranoid to accept that they are clean and not planning anything nefarious. So they plan to send Young Justice, the Teen Titans, and other younger League members to investigate the Academy as students of the Academy.

Can anyone help me identify this bone? I found it while helping go through my best friend's stuff to take to Goodwill, it was wrapped in bubble wrap, taped, and then taped to the bottom of a shelf in a corner cabinet. None of us put it there and I know what all my bones are and where they are, so it's not one of mine.
