this is my cat, taiyaki! i'm always unsure what color he is, since he's far more "blonde" than orange. he has stripes and white markings on his nose, stomach, underside of the tail, and paws (except for one toe, which i call the hole in his sock). he also has freckles on his nose and toes :) thank you!!!

this lovely boy looks like a cream mackerel tabby with low white! cream is the dilute of red, so he is paler than a cat who does not display dilute, like your average red tabby :3

What's the best way to tell lilac and blue cats apart at a glance?

It isn’t always easy if you don’t know what you’re looking for, I definitely had a hard time with it before I started to run this blog but I guess you pick up some things through exposure looking at and labeling thousands of cats.

If the cat is not a purebred it is generally safe to assume they’re blue not lilac. There are random-bred lilac cats out there but statistically speaking if you see a moggy and you’re not sure if they’re blue or lilac… you have a much better chance of getting it right if you assume blue.

This is also applicable to breeds where lilac is not a recognized color. In theory the cat could be produced from a breeder looking to introduce new colors into the breed… but more likely the cat is just blue.

2. If they’re side-by-side it’s usually pretty easy to tell. Blue is often referred to as gray colloquially while lilac is more… pastel, powder-y? It may also be referred to as “lavender” depending on the breed.

Even if you don’t really know what lilac looks like you probably know what blue (or “gray”) does, so in cases where they’re side by side you can conclude the lilac cat is the not-blue cat.

3. Check the nose and paws. These are less likely to present with drastic changes due to other genes or lighting, although you have to keep in mind genetically agouti cats will have different nose leather than their no -agouti cousins of the same color. Fortunately the paw pads don’t generally seem to change.

On the left we have a sampling of blue noses, depending on individual and lighting we get a range of almost-silver to slate gray to charcoal.

On the right we have a sampling of lilac noses, which often have a sort of ‘matte’ look to them and can range from a mocha-like color to sort of purple-hued.

On the left we have a sample of blue paw pads which are sort of a crushed/cooked blueberry color and on the left we have lilac paw pads that are pink-ish.

Any snake knowers identify this lil guy my cat found this morning. He seemed ok once the cat was removed and returned to its natural habitat, Slithered right out of the tupperware container.

Found in maryland if it helps and very small, only 2-3 inches across when coiled up like shown

help needed 😭

hi everyone. i could really use some help identifying an entity. i’d feel more comfortable discussing in pms bc i don’t wanna put too much information out there. essentially i was doing an identification on an entity but know i’m stumped, and at this point i’m wondering if i’m getting pranked or not

i also feel a little anxious and uneasy about my own abilities. i would appreciate another hand because im not so sure at this point. any help would be appreciated, thank you 😭

What would you call this calico? I’m curious about why there’s tabby stripes in her orange areas but not the black area - is that common?

your cat is genetically solid, hence why her black patches are solid. However, red cats always display tabby, even if they're genetically solid. This is why she's black self with red tabby :3

Telling apart two tiny Salish Sea jellies

Both these jellies are ~1 cm wide and have a very similar shape and coloration, especially with the ring of golden dots at the base of the tentacles and the cross shape formed by how their gut attaches inside the bell. This makes them easy to mix up in the water, but if you get closer you can tell them apart by their radial canals - those transparent structures coming off the yellow cross and down to the tentacles.

Trichydra pudica (left) - has four straight radial canals that go from each point of the gut down to the bottom of the bell. These four radial canals have curved but unbranched branches coming off both sides of the main radial canals.

Proboscidactyla flavicirrata (right) - radial canals start at each of the four points of the gut but branch immediately and repeatedly until there is a branch that ends at each of the tentacles. This branching looks like phylogenetic trees.
