Cynthia Griffin Wolff, acclaimed biographer and longtime MIT professor, dies at 87
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cynthia Griffin Wolff, a noted scholar of American literature, passed away on July 25. She was 87.
Wolff joined the humanities faculty at MIT in 1980 and was named the Class of 1922 Professor of Humanities in 1985. She taught in the Literature Section, and later moved to the Program in Writing and Humanistic Studies. Her expertise was in the exploration of 19th and 20th century female American writers. She retired from MIT in 2003.
Wolff was born in Saint Louis, Missouri, on Aug. 20, 1934. She was a graduate of Radcliffe College, attended Harvard Medical School, and in 1965 received her PhD in English at Harvard University. Before her arrival at MIT, she was a tenured professor of English and American literature at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
Wolff wrote two major literary biographies. “A Feast of Words: The Triumph of Edith Wharton” was published in 1977. That was followed by the 1986 biography “Emily Dickinson.” Wolff worked for several years to unearth new and original primary sources before even starting the process of writing a first draft. She sought to analyze her subject’s literary oeuvre with a complete understanding of the authors’ historical and personal contexts. She also edited numerous books that brought long-overdue attention to American women writers.
Several years before her retirement, Wolff began composing a third literary biography on writer Willa Cather. Wolff continued work after her retirement but found herself unable to bring it to fruition and eventually put it aside.
“A devoted teacher and an inspired scholar, Cynthia Griffin Wolff cemented her literary legacy worldwide with her highly influential biographies of Edith Wharton and Emily Dickinson,” says Kenneth Manning, the Thomas Meloy Professor of Rhetoric (programs in Writing and Humanistic Studies and Science, Technology, and Society) at MIT who worked with Wolff during her tenure. “I was anticipating the same creative force in her biographical research on Willa Cather.”
Following her retirement, Wolff spent much of her time in South Dennis, Massachusetts, in an early 19th century Cape Colonial she restored. She later moved into the Orchard Cove senior community in Canton, Massachusetts.
Wolff is survived by her sons Patrick and Tobias; Patrick’s wife, Diana; and two grandchildren, Samuel and Athena.

"Oh sacrament of summer days"
“Quick, now, here, now, always,” open your door and lean into the freshness of the world. Run barefoot across the lawns of summer. Thank the generous sun. Breathe the golden air. Find the hidden treasure. Don’t come home till dark. #SummerSolstice #summer

A something in a summer’s day, As slow her flambeaux burn away Which solemnizes me.
A something in a summer’s noon – A depth – an Azure – a perfume – Transcending ecstasy.

Lady Agnew of Lochnaw by John Singer Sargent, 1892
Tumblr media
When examining portrait art from the late 19th and early 20th century, the use of women as a “symbol of virtue [became] ambiguous” (Wolff 17). The woman became the artist’s subject and the portrait assumed a more realistic representation. In her article, “Lily Bart and the Beautiful Death,” Cynthia Griffin Wolff observes that in the “area of portraiture, the artist’s attitude toward his subject is difficult to define,” and that “the techniques suggest a quest for genuine representation.” She notes that contemporary criticism regards the portrait artist as one who could “render the depths and psychological complexity of his subjects” (Wolff 18).
When viewing Lily opposite himself on the train after not seeing her for three months, Selden could be seen as viewing her from the lens of an artist. He notes that “a subtle change had passed over the quality of her beauty…it had a transparency through which the fluctuations of the spirit were sometimes tragically visible; now its impenetrable surface suggested a process of crystallization which had fused her whole being into one hard brilliant substance” (Wharton 191-92).

Female Characters in Literature
The way women were portrayed in our texts throughout the semester is a topic that I took note of. The Arabian Nights by Husain Haddawy was a text in which gender played a major role. The way women are treated in this novel is unsettling, but it is historically accurate and important to learn. There are many examples throughout the novel of women being mistreated, in fact that serves as a main purpose for the storyline. The novel starts off intensely by discussing women being raped and murdered, but soon after Shahrazad perseveres to put an end to the cruelty. With so many historically accurate and disturbing parts of this novel, Shahrazad serves as a defiant heroine to give the reader hope. One of my favorite quotes by Shahrazad is when she stands up for her people and says to her father, “I would like you to marry me to King Shahrayar, so that I may either succeed in saving the people or perish and die like the rest” (Haddawy 15). Shahrazad’s determination and dedication to her people is inspiring and heroic. This text not only shows how women have suffered for centuries all over the world, but it also gives the reader hope by describing a strong heroine, willing to die for other innocent people. I absolutely love seeing strong, female characters portrayed in literature. It is so important to defy gender stereotypes and norms in every way possible, and as a writer, I intend to do this. Cynthia Griffin Wolff wrote an interesting article that discusses different stereotypes that are placed upon women in literature. Wolff discusses the way so many woman characters are placed in literature for the benefit of a man when she states, “Usually the chaste woman is identified with the positive elements in a man’s life; typically she inspires literary productivity or other virtuous acts such as patriotism (as in Scott’s novels)” (Wolff 208). This quote by Wolff marks one of the major issues with the portrayal of women in literature; it is important for writers to defy these stereotypes, by writing in women who are placed in a novel for the same reason that men are. Gender is another topic that I will take seriously and discuss in my future classroom.

EVENT 021 - HOGSMEADE OLYMPICS
With everything going on, local leaders and authorities decided that a community event to cheer everyone up and bring us all together. After much discussion, an event quite like the Olympics was put together.
Time to get your team spirit and competitive attitudes in check because there will be teams and there will be events and there will be a winner !! It’s important to remember that we’re all in this together and no matter how bad things seem to get, tomorrow is another day. As the late, great Albus Dumbledore said:
❝ Happiness can be found in even the darkest of times, but only to those who remember to turn on the light. ❞
OOC
This is not a time constrained event per se. All the events will take place throughout August and possibly into the first week of September. You will be allowed to continue and begin nonevent threads throughout but each activity/event should be acknowledged and incorporated into conversations, particularly when your character and their team are involved.
This is not an optional event. All characters will be taking part and have been split into teams (which you will find under the read more below). We encourage all muns to branch out and create new friendships/connections with each other through the team they’re in and the teams they’re playing against. A tournament board will be posted shortly, showing the first round of events/activities and we will be asking muns to vote in our OOC discord chat on the winners of each event sporadically throughout the month. There will also be a few extra awards such as team spirit, sportsmanship and more at an awards ceremony at the end of the month.
Please use the tag #sdhqolympics1 for all threads that are meant for the teams taking part in events/activities. If it’s a closed thread for certain characters taking part, be sure to tag their blogs. Also if you want a specific plot where your character gets injured (minor injuries only) or helps the team win / causes them to lose, please run it past the main as soon as possible.
Like this post when you’ve read it so we know that you’ve seen it !!
