I successfully got Zorin OS 16.3 Core running on an ARM64 Machine. It's like 5 AM, and I'm literally writing this on the ARM Linux version of Firefox because I just needed to. It took me hours of just trying to read between the lines of vaguely related forum posts and doing my best, as someone who doesn't really consider themselves a Linux pro, but I eventually got something right, and now I have Zorin OS running on an M1 iMac via a UTM Virtual Machine, despite there being no official or unofficial ARM version of Zorin OS Core. Idk what to do with this knowledge, so I'm just letting everyone here know because idk what else to do, and I'm kinda excited it actually worked (and is working well) because I really wasn't expecting this to happen.

The photo above is of a 2011 iMac, installed with a new 2020 Mac Mini M1 logic board. It's a lot of effort to avoid buying a 27" monitor, but it's a pretty solid use for an 11+ year-old desktop.

Apple Oct 30 Event: Unveiling New iMac & MacBook Details Inside

For the “Scary Fast” event, which is scheduled for the end of this month and is likely to feature the introduction of the iMac and MacBook models, Apple has started mailing out invites. The unique Apple Event takes place on October 30 at 5:00 PM. PT, according to the invitation that Gadgets360 got on Tuesday from the California-based tech giant.

The event will also be streamed live on apple.com, the company’s official website. A prior source stated that Apple is anticipated to introduce a 24-inch iMac replacement model at this forthcoming presentation. 

Apple started handing out new invites for a future event on Tuesday, October 24. Although the event details have not been disclosed by the firm, a Mac Launch event is anticipated. The corporation has not yet disclosed the roster for the event.

In consideration of India, the event is planned for 5 pm PT, which translates to 5:30 am on October 31. This is a really weird timing for an Apple event. YouTube and Apple.com will both be offering live coverage of the event.

Apple has not yet updated their 24-inch iMac for 2021. A prior story, which drew on Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman newsletter, stated that Apple will introduce a refreshed 24-inch iMac at the next event.

He also mentioned the release of a bigger iMac Pro variant in late 2024 or early 2025. The next 24-inch iMac, according to industry expert Ming-Chi Kuo, will launch the following year. 

M1 Processor: Powering the Previous 24-inch iMac

The M1 processor drove the previous generation of 24-inch iMacs. It has a 4.5K retina display with a peak brightness of 500 nits and is offered in seven different color variants. Gurman was cited in another earlier story that said, Apple’s newest M3 processor would be used in the upcoming Mac devices. According to Gurman’s claim, Apple does not intend to release any new iPad models this year. New iPad models may be released by the firm in March 2024.

I Wanna iMac

I really want a 'new' iMac though in my researches I'm trying to figure out why anyone would buy an Intel-powered machine because if one thing weren't fairly obvious it's that Apple is doing its damnedest to move away from that era with its own in-house designed M-Series processors.

So I'm trolling eBay for a new – for me – iMac because that Intel-shit is done and I not only want a powerful machine but a somewhat future-proofed one.

Appleのオンラインストアには＜学生・教職員向けストア＞があって、＜大学生、高等専門学校および専門学校生、これらの学校に進学が決まった生徒のみなさん、大学受験予備校生、教育機関の教職員の方々などが対象＞であることから、私など重宝している。例えば＜Mac mini＞の一番安いモデルは一般なら84,800円のところが70,800円で購入出来るのだ。今回は自宅のM1モデルを下取りに出してM2モデルを購入した。研究室に入れたiMac（M3）が快適なので、落差が気になりだしたのだ。さて、どうかな？

3時起床。

日誌書く。

Mac mini の入替作業、まずは使用中のM1モデルを初期化して、次にM2モデルに Time Machine のバックアップを復元する。結構時間がかかると思っていたが、いつもの起床時間までには完了した。M1モデルは下取りに出すのだが、土曜日に集荷を予約している。

ツレアイの起床に合わせて洗濯開始。

朝食、珈琲、今朝は弁当なし。

プラゴミ、30L*1。このところ、トレイをスーパーに持っていくので従来の45Lではなく30Lで間に合うようになった。

彼女は夜の太鼓の練習があるので自転車で出勤、私は一人で出発。

今朝は交通量が多く、結構時間がかかってしまった。

昨日の＜情報機器の操作Ⅰ（栄養学科）＞の入力課題をチェック、かなりタイピングにバラツキがある。

＜スタディスキルズ＞第4週の授業内容を検討、ワークシートを用意する。

木曜日3限は＜スタディスキルズ（教育学科）＞、18名のクラスだが1名は退学したようなので17名が3週連続欠席無し。今日からグループワーク開始、3班に分けたのだがそれぞれカラーが違って面白い。

帰路は順調、48分とは凄い。

まずはコレモ七条店まで買い物、トマト・キュウリ・レタス・コロッケ・アジフライ。

糠床メンテナンス、キュウリを漬ける。

奥川ファームの真タマネギをスライスして酢に漬ける。

Mac mini のチェック、今回は吊るしモデル（メモリーが8M）なのでいささか余裕がない（お金がないので仕方ない）。

早めに息子たちの夕飯、ホウレン草のごま和え／ニンジンのぬか漬け／トマト／焼きソーセージ（ハーブ）／コレモの＜昔ながらのコロッケ＞、揚げと若布の味噌汁、🍷。

🍷ちびちびやりながら、ツレアイの帰りを待つ。

20時に終了との連絡、あれこれ肴を用意する。

you see i have NO idea how the m1 chips might handle graphic design... my boss bought a m1 iMac and its memory was completely shit it couldnt get a single illustrator file open without shitting itself... when he told me that i was so gagged... maybe 16gb will make everything smooth for you but i have no idea, been getting a lot of mixed reactions from forums etc id recommend reading A LOT abt it first cause my 2015 intel imac been doing just fine cause i maxed its memory with thee very first payment i ever got with my design services... remember when apple stuff was upgradeable? yea...

I hope you know you've earned the title Linux pro my friend. Installing linux on apple hardware is a challenge, installing a linux OS without support for the architecture/arm on apple hardware is truly triumph. Even if you don't believe it i bestow upon you an honorary title of Linux pro. Be well, and be free friend!

Well, to be fair, I didn't install Zorin OS onto an M1 Mac. It's running under a UTM (QEmu) Virtual Machine. I am, however, surprised that I got Zorin OS Core running on an ARM Machine, at all. I'm even more surprised that I've done it before anyone has documented it online. There are plenty of questions about an ARM version and M1 Virtualization on Zorin's official forum, but they usually go unanswered. From the initial forum posts I used to get my leverage, most people seemed to conclude that Zorin OS Lite would work just fine, but attempting to install Zorin OS Core over top of Ubuntu Server ARM resulted in dependency issues. I got this issues at first too, but after trying and trying again, I realize that Ubuntu Server 20.04's own repositories didn't contain the app versions that Zorin OS was looking for when attempting to install. I realized that Zorin's devs probably had to implement these in repositories of their own, and I was right. I found the list of official Zorin OS repos and "sudo add-apt-repository"ed about 3-4 of them into Ubuntu Server. After that, "sudo aptitude install zorin-os-desktop" ran without errors, and one reboot later, I was running Zorin OS 16.3 Core on an ARM Virtual Machine.

It's still not perfect. Strange oddities, glitches, and freezes occur here and there. For example, this is the second version of this post I'm writing. During the first draft, the VM froze, and I had to restart it. It just does that randomly, for seemingly no reason. I've added an app to the macOS host to see if it's the external SSD sleeping that's causing this issue, but I don't know, as of right now.

The Software Store (aka package manager) also doesn't seem to work properly. Nothing installs, and I always have to use "sudo aptitude install" to get stuff. I'm assuming, despite being the ARM64 version of Gnome Software, something under the hood is still attempting to install the AMD64 version of apps, causing the weird failures and indefinite stalls.

The main LibreOffice app, for some reason, also didn't appear in the Zorin Menu, and had to be added manually.

Only one of UTM's sound card drivers allowed the audio settings to appear as normal. Everything else eliminated a bunch of sliders in the "Sound" settings and muted the VM on startup. That was pretty annoying because I wanted to hear the Zorin OS login chime. Luckily, the one sound card option fixed all this, but for some reason, the VM occasionally starts up with zero audio. It always does this when I restart, so I always have to shut down and then turn back on to fix it.

I'm sure there's plenty more, but so far that's all I've found. I'm sure a more power user would find other stuff, but I'm really only looked to use Zorin OS as a productivity OS, so I'm not likely to run into much more.

To be fair, though, even with all the weird stuff, it still runs smoother than the native install on my 2011 MacBook Pro, so I'm not complaining. In fact, I'm just happy to be using Zorin OS on my desktop, at all.

gabbiii what laptop do you currently use to make gifs? i'm seriously considering switching from windows to mac for the first time in my life bc i'm tired of having to buy a new laptop every few years

I’m in the same boat actually haha I have a HP omen laptop that’s nearly 4 years old but it’s about to die, the battery sucks, the fans are wrecked and I can barely make gifs on it, whereas my nearly 5 year old iMac runs like it’s brand new. Now that I get a photoshop subscription through my job and know how to make gifs on mac properly I might get a MacBook pro myself, from what I’ve heard the new M1 chips are really good, as a designer its much more beneficial for me to move away from windows too. we all just got a Mac Studio at work which is mind blowingly good, it’s obviously more pricey but I can barely get three years out of a windows laptop
