Don't mind me, I'm just thinking about this headcanon I saw where Soap had eidetic memory...

... and, as someone with "eidetic memory" myself, I can't help but know that ADHD+"Eidetic Memory"+Army (army man?? soldier?? we just call them war criminals where I live! but anyways) Soap would be soooo plagued with memories and thoughts and oh my god the CONTENT for SUFFERING?

When you remember too much you can see all these good memories, full HD, good audio and subtitles included. Unfortunately it is the same for the bad stuff.

All the faces he would recall, lots of them dead, most of those deaths happening before him, some of them committed by him. The details from every "scene". Innocent or not, so many names ringing non-stop in his head, day and night.

And then every injury his friends suffered, which ones could've been prevented, which ones linger...

But sometimes it's not so bad. Even though it takes a toll on him, his memory would also make him a good friend. Always trying to mitigate others' pains, carrying heavy things for that person with fckd up hands, walking slower so that one with bad knees didn't have to strain themself. And people wouldn't even notice, they'd just think it was a coincidence.

Of course nothing is too good it can't be ruined. His helping isn't innate, he does it so people know he cares and they matter. So, when his closest friends don't seem to remember all these small things about him, it just feels like maybe he doesn't matter that much. "Surely everyone acts the same as me, maybe the problem is I'm not that person to them."

Here comes ADHD with its terribly regulated emotions and then BOOM now Soap hates himself!

i've noticed just how often achilles' dragging of hector's corpse is framed mostly as an act of extreme disrespect, or only some brutal show of triumph. personally i think that's underselling both achilles' intention and what the trojans must be thinking as they watch it happen.

hector's corpse is divinely protected so it can't be damaged by the greeks after death; all that effectively happens in the iliad is that his body gets dirty. but under normal circumstances (and i'm not gonna impose realism on mythology, but the iliad is famously detailed when it comes to bodily trauma), the physical reality of dragging a corpse along stony ground for miles would be severe disfigurement and dismemberment. first the skin would wear off, then soft tissues, then extremities would start to detach. i think the iliad's original audience would be aware of that as an intended outcome.

achilles (who doesn't yet know that hector's body has been granted divine stasis) doesn't just want to parade his enemy's corpse around, he wants to tear it apart ("i only wish that this fury inside my heart would drive me to carve you to pieces and eat your flesh raw..."), he wants it to not resemble a human anymore. he wants hector's blood and flesh to circle the city of troy. he wants to make it impossible for hector's family to gather the pieces of him to cremate and that way hector's spirit won't find passage into the underworld. that's what the gods are preventing from happening, they're not just keeping the corpse pretty for priam to pick up later.

I think, perhaps one of the funniest things to come from EPIC popularising the Odyssey is that now a ton of people think Poseidon wanted to kill Odysseus.

In the Odyssey, Poseidon has no intention of killing Odysseus. In fact, part of the whole reason Zeus lets Poseidon do whatever he wants even though he thinks Odysseus is rad and should get to kiss his wife is explicitly because Poseidon had no intentions of killing Odysseus. Poseidon wanted to pay back the suffering/inconvenience blinding Polyphemus would have caused. It's a really abstract thing tbh. How do you pay back someone permanently disabling your son? Poseidon's solution was just to amputate Odysseus from his other half; i.e. Penelope. The end game was never murder, it was always an endurance race.

Also, for those wondering if there's any sort of in text reason for why Poseidon wasn't around in God Games - at the time in the Odyssey when Athena petitions Zeus to let Odysseus leave Calypso's island, Poseidon was -checks notes- on vacation in Ethiopia. Yep. He left to Ethiopia for a festival and thusly was very much absent for Athena's whole "please let Ody go? Please? 🥺" request.
