This Is How I Can Still Win: How The Penroses Are Related to House Targaryen

SO. In case you don’t remember - you probably don’t, it’s a throwaway line and likely just George retconning and not doing it on purpose - Jeor Mormont misremembers Aelinor Penrose as being Aerys I’s sister instead of her cousin. Here’s the quote, from Jon I in A Clash of Kings:

"No, this was Aerys the First. The one Robert deposed was the second of that name.” “How long ago was this?” “Eighty years or close enough,” the Old Bear said, “and no, I still hadn’t been born, though Aemon had forged half a dozen links of his maester’s chain by then. Aerys wed his own sister, as the Targaryens were wont to do, and reigned for ten or twelve years."

Potentially, this means that Aelinor has ~the Valyrian look~ and that’s why Jeor got them mixed up. But when you look at the information surrounding the Penroses that existed in this era, it looks a little wonky because of this line from The Mystery Knight:

"At the crossing of the Mandel, he cut down the sons of Lady Penrose one by one. They say he spared the life of the youngest one as a kindness to his mother."

So how can Elaena marry Ronnel, Lord of the Parchments, only have one son, yet Quentyn Ball slew all of “Lady Penrose’s” sons? How is Aelinor related to the Penroses and the Targaryens? What woman of Targaryen blood would marry into this random ass house in the middle of Stormlands? Why was it so important to retcon Aelinor from a sister into a cousin? Well - let’s have a think about what other houses have recent Valyrian blood…we have some female lines after all…perhaps even Targaryen women that married into politically active houses, who would love to marry back into the main branch again…I wonder who that could be…..Oh what’s that? Is that-

Allow me to spin two family trees for you, one where Rhaena’s daughter marries into the Penroses, and one where Baela’s daughter marries into the Penroses:

(pls applaud me for the amount of math i did for this very unserious post!) green is a romantic/marriage line, black is a parental relationship.

I am noting that this would mean Alyssa (I made her name up btw, mostly because I thought it would piss Daemon off to have a Hightower named after his beloved mother) gives birth at around 34, which is a perfectly reasonable age to have a child at, and Laena gives birth at like 40, which is definitely a lil risky! BUT there’s plenty of time for Laena to have other children, and for a second born son to have had a child at that same age, so if you think it’s a stretch for Laena to have a kid at 40 (perfectly fair) just pretend there’s a son there named “Roland” or something as Aelinor’s dad and Laena’s second born.

Now, FIRST OF ALL, this makes the cousin thing make sense, but also it makes it deeply funny - Aelinor is Aerys’ great aunt’s granddaughter. That’s a close enough relationship that you would consider them a cousin but it’s also the exact relationship Robert has to Rhaegar (because Rhaegar is Robert’s great uncle’s grandson). Both Aerys and Robert avoiding incest/kinslaying on a technicality lol.

But SECOND OF ALL. Do you know what makes me absolutely fucjing feral about this. Alyn Velaryon is messing around with a woman so much younger than him. That she marries his GRANDSON. because SHE IS THE SAME AGE AS HIS GRANDSON. i feel like george is weird enough to do the Baela scenario too.

And LASTLY OF ALL. Notice there’s plenty of time for Alyssa/Laena aka Lady Penrose after she’s married, to have several sons for Quentyn Ball to slay on the Redgrass Field, including Elaena’s husband, Ronnel himself, and for Elaena’s son, Robin Penrose, to inherit the seat afterwards. It also means, since it’s mentioned that Elaena married Michael Manwoody soon after her second husband died, that the two of them got a long time together. Why is this important? Because Michael Manwoody was her marriage for love and I want Elaena to have been with him for a long time.

This scenario gives her like 9 years with Ronnel (kinda sad, their kids don’t get to know their dad very long) and a minimum of 15 years with Michael Manwoody, who is apparently not the step dad but the dad that stepped up.

If you're on the rivalry path with Aveline, she says:

I always rival Aveline when I play a mage, and if you think Edgar Aristide Hawke, who practically raised Carver and Bethany after Malcolm died and Leandra became a distant mother in her grief, wouldn't stop dead in his tracks at Aveline heavily implying he's a bad influence on his brother and Carver shouldn't hang around him so much since apparently Ed's someone set on ending badly...? Absolutely not.

This is another case of me wishing Hawke had the option to jump in during party banter with different options, because Ed would've chewed Aveline out for that.

Oh, and then there's:

Carver: Would asking you to stop spying on me help in the least? Aveline: No.

Aveline...................stop it.

hihi toastie! i promised you i would share with you songs that remind me of eclairette and here i am fulfilling said promise (`･ω･´)ゞ

the first one is the enchanted lake composed by anatoly lyadov .. like the title suggests, it sounds just like a fairytale! it especially reminds me of eclair — the gentle trill of the strings makes me think of her since she is very swan-like :3 the build-up is very bewitching too!! maybe swan!eclair coasting along the lake as dragon!neuvie watches on, entranced by her beauty? 🙈

the second is la petite fille de la mer by vangelis ♥︎ another enchanting, magical sounding song — but it sounds a bit more sombre and dreamy … actually the more i think about it, it reminds me of manu’s folklore au! sweet eclair being raised on stories of the sea sovereign and falling in love from just the tales alone … finding him stranded on the shore years later as a woman and nursing him back to health ohhhhdhdjsdhs!!

So firstly, I love both of these! The soft strings and build up in The Enchanted Lake...I'm not going to lie, I kept clicking on the wrong one the first few times (curse you Tchaikovsky!) and couldn't really appreciate it for how lovely it was 😭 I really should pull that swan maiden!Eclair and sovereign dragon!Neuvillette au out again because imagining Neuv silently watching Eclair drifting along the shoreline every evening when she comes her for safety makes my heart tingle a bit! Intruders are never welcomed to such a sacred pool but she doesn't know that's what this is. And he's not exactly in a rush to scare her away. Perhaps he will eventually. Eventually...

That being said, I'm OBSESSED with how La Petite Fille de La Mer sounds!!! It's so dreamy and hazy and even sounds like it's underwater...I don't know how to describe it other than as a kind of ethereal music box. Something Eclair's mother would have played for her when she was a little girl to help her fall asleep. Always make her dream of underwater castles and dragons and the sovereign himself guiding her through sunken corridors with her hand in his...sigh...

Alas, dreams are only dreams and the time and distance she spent away from the sea caused such childish flights of fancy to fade into the background of her busy life. But when she returns to that childhood home - to help with maintenance the house or to take a short vacation away from the city - and finds a man (is he really a man?) unconscious on the shoreline, she can't help but remember those stories and dreams she used to have all those years ago...

I have to think about these both some more and chew on the thoughts that will come about because of them!!! Thank you again for the music recommendations Coco!! 💕

Hi I am back with more Flight Rising art!!

I spent way too long on this and honestly a lot more effort than I feel like I should have but you know what? That doesn't matter, this was a gigantic learning experience in and of itself as well as likely the most proud I've ever been with a FR drawing so.

As you can tell I had loads of fun with the metal and jewelry. I'm actually surprised I didn't get stuck on the pose for a while because I keep choosing Skydancers and then regretting it lmaoo

Then when I finished the metal, everything else looked flat and lazy in comparison, so I ended up going all out on like everything. I still feel like the mist, or smoke, or whatever that is could have been a lot better, but I think that's a lesson for another day because I barely learned how to make metal look good.

I still think the head feathers don't look feathery enough but that's okay, at least they don't look flat.

ANYWAY enough of my rambling, enjoy!!

GREAT QUESTION I gotta chew on this one...!

I think number one favorite might be my Red Robe; I wish it had pockets, but it's super comfy and I drafted the entire pattern myself

honestly I REALLY love this spiral earring I made for my Caduceus cosplay; I like to just wear it around, the only reason I don't more often is that it's held together with magnets and I'm afraid I'll lose it

third might beeee the cloak of the manta ray? I drafted this pattern completely from scratch AND designed the gold accents myself where you can't see them in the DMG illustration AND the whole outer layer is waterproofed so it sheds water, I'm really proud of it
