"Lwj flipped back and forth between full confidence that wwx would come back and crushing despair over wwx just being dead. He collected alcohol for wwx to gift on return, but the only thing stopping lwj from just consuming it himself and getting alcohol poisoning was that he had to stay together enough to raise their son. It features genius Wei Ying, supportive Lan Qiren, learning-to-be-less-naive Lan Xichen, and lazy but talented Nie Huaisang. This takes place two centuries after the war happened, and it has a sort of post apocalyptic vibe. This is a story of rebuilding and finding safety. It's about found family and forming a new society away from the old one that persecuted them.

i love this explanation tho, that goes back to that actual day years ago and what happened. it was the 5th day of filming CQL and they did not have scenes together, so why did he pay attention and followed him? he was filming the scene in the burial mounds, WWX was drunk and reminiscing about when he first met LWJ. WWX misses LWJ cause he is not there. Was XZ also missing WYB that time? to the point that he went to his weibo account and followed him?

it’s not a secret that XZ prefers it when WYB is there, not only to act with, but just there for him. plus this level of attachment on the 5th day of filming is not surprising when it comes to them.

I'm so tired of takes that say Wei Wuxian was absolutely perfect in every way in his first life because yes he was good and so very very good and had the best intentions and saved the others not just because he wanted to but because that was what was good and right.

That was never his fatal flaw though his hubris was that he convinced himself he had to do it all ALONE. That instead of talking to the people who cared about him and working with them, he thought he had to do it alone because he does have a hero complex in that he thinks everything will be fine as long as he's the only one getting hurt. That, combined with the other political machinations, is what led to his downfall. Not his arrogance or his actions, but that he refused to share any of the burden with others.

It's why he and JGY are such excellent foils for each other because as WWX pre resurrection became more and more isolated we saw jgy's social connection and standing get stronger. Then, after the resurrection we see that jgy is almost on his own whole wwx gets the support he needed and actually takes it this time.

Because in his second life he survived because he followed lwj, because he let him help him. They turned the tide of the second siege at burial mounds because the juniors amd the wen remnants helped them, because lwj was there. They took down jgy why because nhs got involved and had witnesses. And guanyin temple succeeded because they all were there not because wwx is a God who never makes mistakes

In his second life he learned he can rely on others and let them help him. That he doesn't have to be alone. That's his character development and without it he'd have never survived

Wei WuXian suddenly murmured, '… Lan Zhan.'

He reached out and grabbed one of Lan WangJi’s sleeves. Lan WangJi had always been beside him. He immediately bent down and whispered, 'I am here.

I'll probably never stop thinking about LWJ being married off to one of the other clan leaders/heirs due to some sort of arrangement (where he still inexplicably ends up attached to WWX at the hip). So, here's some thoughts on all of them: 

Part One: The Nies

NMJ - NMJ is kind, but ultimately treats LWJ like a second HS. In turn, NHS grows to resent being compared to his perfect BIL at every possible point. Within the first month of LWJ living in QH, he develops a habit of making sarcastic remarks about 'why doesn't Nie zongzhu marry LWJ if he loves him so much?'. NMJ spends the early days of his marriage rolling his eyes at his jealous little brother.

He doesn't consummate the union, and he's not afraid to admit it to anyone who asks - nothing personal, he just doesn't like men that way. That's not to say he broadcasts this fact, but he's not about to lie about it.

It's possible he married LWJ as a favour to Zewu-jun, to keep him away from some other party who wanted him (most likely WX. I'm so sorry, but there's not one part of me that doesn't believe he desires LWJ - either carnally or as a sparring partner; I'm not fussy).

In any case, it wasn't a love match and NMJ isn't about to pretend otherwise. On the other hand, he takes pleasure in bringing LWJ to events just to watch how WX's face darkens when he wraps an arm around his husband's waist. He doesn't really notice how LWJ stiffens under his touch. He's not really Aware that way. If he was, perhaps things wouldn't have gone as badly as they did...

About a year into their marriage, he discovers his husband has been sneaking away to Yiling to make eyes at a demonic cultivator. As punishment, NMJ confines him to his quarters until further notice, kept under the strict watch of Nie guards - but not before giving him the verbal lashing of his life.

What was LWJ thinking, going around acting loose for all to see? Doesn't he realise how this will reflect on their clan? What it will broadcast to the world about NMJ, whether his husband actually meant to seduce YLLZ or not? Just by willingly being in the man's presence - spending time with his child of all things - is enough to bring LWJ's morality into question - along with his virtue!

(LWJ cries as soon as he's left to his own devices. He does not strike me as the kind of person who deals well with being yelled at, especially when the most he was doing in Yiling was making friends with another lonely man. He happens to be in love with that man, but that's beside the point - LWJ is no cheater).

Their marriage ends shortly after, in either a messy divorce and exile, or LWJ being 'stolen away' in the dead of night. In either case, he's located years later on the Yiling Patriarch's lap, feeding him pastries directly out of his hand without a care for who sees. And there are a lot of witnesses, it being the middle of a discussion conference - for the first time in many years, one is being held in the BM, in the heart of YLLZ's lair!

After the first day, many more cultivators show up, eager to see the face of the fearsome demon's rumoured courtesan for themselves! (LWJ has no idea where these rumours came from. You wear lip tint once, and suddenly you're a beauty stolen away from the capital, hidden from the world by your captor after a life spent catering to the whims of kings).

Anyway, as soon as NMJ sets eyes on LWJ, his face contorts with rage. He very nearly starts a brawl in the middle of the discussion chamber, until YLLZ wraps a tendril of resentful energy around his throat to shut him up.

LWJ is conflicted by this show of force. Is it arousing? Yes. Is it overkill that will probably upset the other clans? Also yes. Is WWX wasting precious energy choking his ex when he could be choking LWJ instead? Absolutely.

(LWJ may or may not pout. It may or may not seem more like a glower to the average bystander, birthing even more ridiculous rumours about his love life.)

To WQ's eternal chagrin, WWX is entirely unapologetic about manhandling a clan leader. What else was he supposed to do? Listen to LWJ's ex-husband speak poorly of him in front of everyone else? Absolutely not!

Word spreads of YLLZ's terrible temper and extreme possessiveness over his courtesan (seriously, everyone saw LWJ. Why does this rumour still exist?). Another rumour buds beside it: that YLLZ stole LWJ away from the abusive tyrant NMJ! LWJ is...perplexed by this hearsay. NMJ has been cruel to him, yes, but he was also kind.

WWX, on the other hand, thinks the rumours are hilarious, and fans the fire by recounting his version of the tale wherever he goes - in which LWJ is a blushing maiden in need of rescue from her tormentor, and WWX a dashing (yet sensitive) rogue.

Somehow, the rumours improve YLLZ's reputation (not in QH. Mysteriously, the tales of NMJ's villainous nature have been suppressed close to his home. NHS knows nothing about it, he swears).

Years pass and NMJ eventually settles down with a nice, normal woman who has sensible hobbies such as weightlifting with boulders and dual-wielding long swords. NMJ sleeps soundly with the knowledge she won't one day run off to become a demonic cultivator's concubine, leaving him with a distraught best friend and about 50 strings of gold worth in property damage to deal with.

(WWX was not subtle in breaking LWJ out).

NHS has never been more scared in his life. He wants LWJ back! YLLZ please, this woman is killing him! She makes him run laps when he can't find his sabre! He can't feel his poor, delicate legs anymore... 😭😭

NHS - I feel like NHS is tricked into the marriage. NMJ told him he had to settle down and start focusing on his studies - so he would be getting a spouse to guide him. But, being NMJ - big and fearless - he also described LWJ in a rather unique way. NHS was told he'd be marrying a soft spoken, delicate, demure beauty, NOT a 6 foot tall, muscled, rule-obsessed, diligent🤢 cultivator!

The poor boy actually walked into his marriage with the intention to consummate it. One look at LWJ after the veil was lifted was enough to scare any lasciviousness from his body for years to come! His new husband is terrifying!

After the wedding night, he spends his days running from his husband, who has sided with his big brother in an effort to turn his days into a waking nightmare! It's always 'NHS you must cultivate!' and 'NHS, where is your sabre?' with these people. Why won't they let him live his life?! He wants to be free! He wants to paint his trauma across multiple canvasses, till he reaches enlightenment! Not be attacked by a stone-faced man the moment he wakes, dragged unwillingly to the training arena to be beaten with a wooden sword as his brother watches. It's unethical. It's inhumane!

(LWJ finds it quite soothing to spar with his husband, working off the frustration he feels at being forced into this foul situation. Also, NHS's stances are improving).

NHS either later hands LWJ off to YLLZ as a war prize (much to LWJ's shock and ire. This was not discussed with him), or canon happens and LWJ becomes known as the powerhouse in their relationship - the 'true' Nie zongzhu, one might say. 

A typical day running a sect with NHS:

Lwj: NHS, you left all your work to me. Again.

Nhs: Ah...

Lwj, eyes narrowed: Have you been scheming?

Nhs: Of course not!

Resurrected WWX falls out of a nearby closet. 

Wwx: LZ! 💖

Lwj: Who is this?

Nhs: Okay, so funny story...

In any case, LWJ and WWX end up very far from QH, living their best newlywed life. 

NHS gets to relax for all of two minutes before someone starts hounding him over finding a new wife. The pain truly never ends! 😭

I am guessing he probably smells like clean human in the early part of his life, and then maybe once he's clan leader he has more scope to have whatever incenses he wants floating through the Unclean Realm so then he might smell of those. And obviously there's various hair oils—he's got his signature look with his rings and his fan so it's possible he has a signature hair oil. But maybe it would be declassé to wear so much hair oil that everyone else can smell it and you'd only be able to tell up close and personal oh my god why have I written this many words about how NHS smells

There's certainly no one in the cast he makes sense with. My personal feeling is that he's really not the type of person who's ever going to work effectively in any kind of partnership, so I don't see him ever being in a relationship that would be a healthy and successful one. Personally, I think the collective dynamic of the Venerated Triad isn't complete without NHS as the unofficial fourth member. LWJ, as is typical, opts out and doesn't give LXC the courtesy of referring to his sworn brothers with fraternal address (not that LXC minds, ilhsm). NHS however is all in on this bonus brother scheme. Not only does he address LXC and JGY as er-ge and san-ge, but he actually treats them like big brothers. He's pleased to see LXC, he's even more pleased to see JGY (omg presents), and it's quite nice that JGY in particular is trying to make up for NMJ's weaknesses in this area. That's not to say that JGY is correct to not make any demands of NHS at all, but he's certainly attempting to be a moderating influence and it's just all really interesting to me.

Of course once NMJ is dead, there's presumably not much time before his corpse first escapes its tomb and NHS concludes there was foul play. So we can't read too much into the way NHS runs back and forth to JGY and LXC, in the sense that obviously a large part of this is an act. But it's still interesting, and I think a lot of people forget that the narration says NHS is bothering LXC at the Cloud Recesses just as often as he's flinging himself on san-ge for fuss and support. This could become its own very long post, so I'll stop here.

a headcanon that is popular in the fandom but that i disagree with

Obviously there are numerous 'headcanons' I disagree with, but to pick one of the most irritating ones, I really dislike this recurring theme I see of NHS showing his hand either postcanon or in divergences. This is a man who never broke character in all of canon—why on earth is he suddenly monologuing at length about his grievances in front of [insert characters here]? Canonically, all he does is obliquely confirm to WWX that he was behind setting the arm on the Mo family, manipulating MXY, killing the cats and luring the juniors, desecrating MS' body etc. But it's all implied and he does not ever relinquish plausible deniability.

It really makes no sense to me to think that NHS would drop his act postcanon, either in the canon scenario of dead JGY, or in a divergence scenario where JGY survives. As infuriating as it would be for him if JGY escaped, he's going to redouble his efforts rather than sabotage himself by confirming WWX's suspicions to literally anyone. He's held it together thus far even when it looked like his plan might go awry, and there's no reason to think he can't continue to hold it together through any further plans and/or confrontations.

NHS' greatest weapon is his ability to not break character, and we already know he doesn't break character in victory. So, a setback as basic as JGY surviving would just not be enough for him to relinquish his modus operandi. I really think he'd be privately furious and distressed, but would continue to disguise that and simply attempt to regroup. (Although, as I have also said before - in a divergence where JGY knows NHS is his enemy, NHS is toast. JGY outclasses NHS on every level and the only advantage NHS has is JGY's profound belief in his harmlessness. Once that is gone, it's game over.)

Perhaps weirdly, I really enjoy NMJ and LXC because of the layers. I really like that the affection between them is genuine but that they just do not get each other and you can see throughout the flashbacks the way their relationship is eroding. And it's not drastic, dramatic erosion like NMJ and JGY, but instead the kind of sad recognisable drifting apart of two people who became friends in their youth because they're from similar backgrounds and have unique and heavy responsibilities—but those similarities are just not enough the older they get, and the more time passes the more apparent it becomes that they have fundamentally different outlooks on life.

I like that NMJ refuses to engage with LXC's basic point about context mattering, yet before he's fully in the grip of the sabre spirit maxing out his worst instincts, he's still capable of being moved by human sympathy when it's LXC making the argument. I like that LXC is the only person NMJ is ever visibly pleased to see. I really believe NMJ cares deeply about LXC, his only actual friend.

And, conversely, I also really like that NMJ is able to see that LXC has a closer bond and rapport with JGY and is frustrated by that. I don't know that I'd go all in on the theory that he's jealous of how close LXC and JGY are as a primary motivation as that's a bit too basic, but I do think that feeling of exclusion is one of the many factors swimming around in the murky depths of the dynamic of their sworn brotherhood.

Finally, I just love the contrast between LXC's relatively clear-eyed view of JGY, where he has a very good understanding of who JGY is and what he's all about even if he's not aware of all the lengths JGY ultimately has to go to, with his absolute obliviousness to who NMJ really is. NMJ is literally trying to stab JGY to death in public and only LXC's intervention prevents murder and yet another inter-clan war, and LXC is still like oh dear, Da-ge really is under a lot of stress. LXC is drifting further and further from NMJ (see the excellent meta from @xiyao-feels for a breakdown of this). Yet he still thinks of NMJ as being at heart the youthful clan leader he first befriended, rather than the current worst self incarnation whose negative qualities have been turned up to the max and who is a lethal ticking time bomb, a danger to everyone around him.

As always, do not get me started. I am absolutely baffled as to where cuddly wuddly giant teddy gym bunny biker Etsy crafter in touch with his fee-fees all bark and no bite NMJ comes from, because he certainly does not feature in canon. I'll stand by this for both MDZS and CQL. I've probably spilt enough ink on MDZS NMJ and we are given very detailed insight into his state of mind so that's a lot easier to reference, but it's worth noting that CQL NMJ is just as profoundly hypocritical and violent and it's vital to incorporate that into his character. Writing only his superficial righteousness, his love for NHS and his affection for LXC is really not enough. It annoys me when aspects of characters are excised in order to sanitise them for what appears to be mainly shipping purposes.

I also know what this guy is doing in my ATLA AU, and I'm super boring and not a huge fan of genuine crossovers—usually I prefer mashups where the characters of one canon are integrated into the setting of another without aping the original plot. I think it's really important to retain his arc of a) losing himself to all his worst qualities, and b) acknowledging that he's choosing to lose himself and handling it badly, but also it's not much of a choice when he can't opt out of the system he's in. I'm thinking maybe an X-Men AU where he has some kind of power that causes sabre-spirit-type degeneration and violence? It would need some kinks worked out of it but might be a decent shout.

I've said this already but for the uninitiated: I was a dumb idiot watching this for the first time and when this shot appeared I got all excited because for a split second I thought. I thought wwx was on one knee. like to propose 😭 obviously for several reasons that was not what was happening but I always think of it when they cut to this shot

ahh they're in the green of summer. growing things, life. not going towards winter. maybe the colors and season was why I think of jc and wwx's relationship as ending, but wwx and lwj's as persisting. that color symbolism is powerful

anyway, bittersweet but ultimately for the best. not just wwx leaving to find some equilibrium in this world he's come back to, but lwj feeling the full force of his own affection and parting with wwx anyway. not exactly the same situation as lwj's parents were in, but significant all the same. wwx needs to be loved and cherished, but he also needs to be free. commitment (a collar) was something he feared in his previous life, and I don't think it's a stretch to say even now he's jumpy about it. after years of persecution and violence, letting him feel everything he needs to, establish himself in the world, and then come back when he's ready is one of the best things he can do for himself. staying in CR for a few weeks to rest and get ready to go back on the road made sense, but several things in cql point to CR not being wwx's preferred permanent home, especially the way this finale played out

one of the most formative pieces of meta I've read described the name of the song as lwj's confession piece, which is why I always find it odd that postcanon fics don't often incorporate it. Okay I've read the main body of SVSSS. I think it's really good as a meta parody and gives some interesting insight into MXTX's mind- I think some of the criticism of her work is unfair and this book is a pretty good example in parts (the running commentary about misogyny in stallion novels is a lot more unambiguous than her accurately depicting misogyny in others wirks like MDZS, though I don't understand why the latter gets read as an indication of her as a person).

However I don't think it works well as a romance story. There are main two problems; one,that while all of MXTX's main characters are people that have gone through the wringer and lashed out on others because of it, sometimes in really grusome and reprehensible ways, we get to see who they are not just before it goes to shit, but after they've acted in a such a way and either by intentional choice or just the passing of time, behave in a kinder and more upright manner. SVSSS's main story ends right after LBH isn't being an antagonistic force driven to the pits. Additionally, LBH is (understandably) a very misanthropic character which makes the way you'd show him learning how to be a person not driven by grief, fear, and anger different.

The other point is SY/SQQ's internalized homophobia is handled in a way that distracts somewhat from his feelings for LBH, and this combines with a lot of the things taken as romantic by other characters being misinterpretions of his internal world. Some of the latter seems to be him bullshitting himself though- "I'm not crying because I'm facing down my beloved student who I've failed horribly and hates me before I off myself without knowing for sure if my contingency plan will work, the sun's just in my eyes", sure Jan. Given how WWX acts its clear that MXTX now knows how to balance internalized homophobia with the character falling in love even if he doesn't realize it, and TGCF doesn't really have internalized homophobia on the protagonists part as far as I've read, he's just a sworn virgin. (However one could argue HC had some issues when he was human depending on how you read the Land of the tender scene).

SVSSS is short compared to her other works, and while I'm not sure how one would do it, having us spend some time with LBH and SQQ after they've gotten rid of his evil sword and SQQ is helping him work through his misanthropy, desire for control, and abandonment issues would improve their relationship from a story perspective, especially because of how obsessive and unhealthy LBH has spent... 8 years of his life regarding SQQ. There's already a foundation with LBH taking SQQ back to his home peak to be taken care of after his near death experience and leaving alone when he gets chased off, and SQQ choosing to go with him with no pressure on him to do so other than LBH's wellbeing (which is no longer tied to things like the apocalypse). I just think there needs to be a bit more between that and what I'm reading in the extras so far.

And it is needed because of how much LBH's dark behavior was directed at SQQ. WWX's dark behavior wasn't so targeted, LWJ's had an instance of targeting but a large part of the novel has been about him doing his best to respect WWX's boundaries and not repeat his parents relationship. I'm not up to snuff on what happened after XL's first banishment yet so I'll keep quiet on that. LBH is so desperate for this one person's affection that he almost destroys the world to ensure he has no other choice but him (and they have terrible fuck or die sex that no one enjoys about it). Evil sword possession making him decide this was a good idea or no, to work as a satisfying romance story, you need to after of all that. Especially because the evil sword had the ability to push him that far because of how chaotic and wrecked his mental and spiritual state were. They're still wrecked.

First, you just listed all the ways in which Lwj did move on in a healthy way, and therein lies the clear difference between them.

Heck, it's literally spelled out for the reader when WWX observes and criticizes JL's behaviour in contrast to complimenting LS's; one of them is calm, mature, responsible and reliable (reflecting the temperament of the one who raised him), and the other is brash, rude, entitled and impulsive (again reflecting the temperament of the one who raised him). Which of those two showed healthy coping mechanisms again?

On the other hand, their guardians; one of them indulges in one drunken night of desperate grief in which he brands himself yes, but then he also moves on, continues to do good and help the common folk (it's what he gets his title from), raising the next generation with gentle guidance and patience, instilling good traits in them, and most importantly honours WWX's legacy by continuing to do the good which he died for.

The other however, lets himself steep in bitterness and resentment for 13 years, makes it everyone else's problem, greatly changes the once grand Lotus Pier for the worst (his own disciples are afraid of him), obsessively searches for WWX for years convinced that he's not dead despite no evidence, tortures and kills 'demonic' cultivators, and instills in JL the worst traits from himself, and quite simply does not move on.

As for that grudge, even if Lwj did care enough about Jc to hold such a grudge against him with that much intensity, it would not be unjustified.

After all, he is one of the direct reasons WWX died. He led a siege against him to kill him and the innocent remaining Wens, he abandoned him and threw him out of his sect without a second thought without even trying to support him (and I'm sick of people claiming he had no choice but to do that when that's simply not true, the novel clearly states in the Phoenix Mountain chapter that his sect was very much thriving thanks to WWX, it was not in any danger of being attacked), and he continues to prove himself to be very much detrimental to WWX's physical and mental health long after he's resurrected. Yeah, any such grudge would not be out of place.

But as it stands, Lwj doesn't really seem to care for what Jc does or does not do. He only confronts him in that second chapter and tears down all those nets, just to make a point that they were actively endangering the civilian life in the mountain, and were also unfair to all the other juniors trying to win the hunt, as it gave JL unfair advantage. Otherwise he doesn't waste words on him despite JC making incessant snide remarks to try to a rise out of him. He simply leaves after advising the juniors.

Moreover, I think it's really refreshing to see a male lead who simply moves on after his beloved's death, and continues to do the right thing, and lives for his love. We see love declarations of "I'll die for you." all the time in the media, but LWJ is the one who truly lives for WWX, lives to do good and honour his life's sacrifice, and I think that's beautiful.

What in the world?

Surely I did not see a post in which someone said that the difference between Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji was that Jiang Cheng was an emotionally stunted asshole who can't let go of a grudge, while Lan Wangji managed to move on in a healthy way after Wei Wuxian's death, including grieving in a healthy way, coping, and forgiving both Wei Wuxian (for up and dying on him) and himself (for not being able to save WWX).

Surely not.

The sheer irony of saying that the difference between Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji is that LWJ is not an emotionally stunted asshole who can't let go of a grudge, when every bit of interaction between Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng after Wei Wuxian's death, up to and including the time after his resurrection, is icily informed by the gigantic seething grudge Lan Wangji holds against Jiang Cheng, which you will pry from Lan Wangji's cold dead fingers and which he has built on projecting his mountain of grief and anger - at both himself and everyone around him for failing WWX - onto Jiang Cheng is just ...

Mn. Very healthy. Much cope. Certainly, in no way grudgey.

I personally disagree but I also struggle to articulate why I do so I was just wondering if you have any thoughts or opinions on this.

I don't think it's sign of them having an unhealthy relationship because even if we ignore the context around those scenes, the rest of the novel (especially post resurrection) is basically LWJ and WWX getting to know each other better and learning how to interact with each other in a healthy way. They're both considerate, open-minded people, who care about each other and respect each other very much. That being said, I'll explain why I don't think those two scenes don't mean their relationship is unhealthy.

In WWX's first life, LWJ says he wants to bring WWX back to Gusu, but he also recognizes that WWX doesn't want that and so, LWJ doesn't bring him back to Gusu against his will. We can take it as just LWJ saying he wished WWX would agree with him and being sad he didn't because, ultimately, LWJ didn't act on it. As for how it relates to the relationship between his parents, it's hard to say much, because we don't know much. I know fandom likes to speculate about Madam Lan possibly being innocent, but there's just not enough evidence to say for sure what happened then. We know her sons loved her but that doesn't say anything about how fair or unfair her treatment might have been in the Lan sect. She seems to not have wanted to marry LWJ's father at some point, but we don't know for sure if she changed her mind later or if he married her against her will. We do know she never complained to her sons, but they were her children so she may have been shielding them from the truth, she could've loved them for being her children even if she had despised their father. We just don't know. LXC is the one who speaks of it and even he doesn't know much. So I don't think it makes sense to say LWJ is "like his father" as evidence that wangxian's relationship os unhealthy, like some antis do - we don't even know enough about what kind of person LWJ's father was, and the only comparison we have between them is the scene where LWJ chooses the opposite as his father.

As for the scene where LWJ does take WWX back to Gusu post resurrection, we have to look at that in the context it happened: JC was trying to frag WWX back to Lotus Pier to torture and kill and WWX himself was yelling about how he liked Hanguang-jun in order to throw off JC. It was WWX's plan to use LWJ to get away from JC, and while we know he didn't mean that at point in time, LWJ is no mind reader. WWX also complained a lot, but did little to actually leave, which he could've if had wanted to, and LWJ knew that. At that point in time, LWJ was still under the impression that WWX knew he had recognized him, after all, so he didn't think WWX was acting like that to make him leave, he probably thought WWX was just teasing teasing him like he had done when they were young. WWX even says, not long before, that the silencing spell is easy to break and will only leave you with a sore throat. He could've broken it in front of LXC and gotten himself kicked out, and he could've just used guidao to aid in his escape if he really wanted to.

After arriving in the Cloud Recesses, WWX's "escape plan" was basically to peep at LWJ bathing and sleep in the same bed. He never said he wanted to leave, partly because he assumed he wouldn't be allowed to, but also because he was having fun. Later on he goes with LWJ to look for NMJ's body parts and he has a million chances to leave but he just doesn't. In fact, when they get separated he consistently goes back to LWJ's side.

In any case, the rest of their relationship is unambiguously positive and healthy, they communicate with each other and respect each other, so I view their relationship as perfectly healthy. Personally, wangxian is one of healthiest couples I've come across in a book.

mxy's pov where he keeps seeing this ghost out of the corner of his eye and then he meets lwj and finds out that everyone he knows is a reincarnation and they're all doomed to follow the same path, meaning that he has to give up his body for wwx and just his thoughts on knowing that he is doomed to follow the same path, and that there's no other way for wwx to return. And at first he resists it, bc his life was tragic but now he's got a job at a coffee shop and his makeup account on insta is starting to gain traction and he doesn't want to die, not like he did when he was still living at his shitty aunt's house with his nasty ass cousin. Because that's what this means, his giving up his body for wwx means that he has to die in the process. And lwj tries to find a way to keep mxy alive bc he isn't a Bad Kid and he doesn't WANT mxy to die, and he remembers wwx in all their past lives telling him that he hated how in order for him to be happy, mxy had to suffer so.

And wwx isn't actually present in this reincarnation, he just waits on the edges of Mxy's peripheral and at the end of dark hallways, his skin torn off and hanging limply all over his body, burns all over his legs and his arms, always bloody, always pale-faced and stoic and silent. It's hard to connect the ghost that stares back at him in the deli windows to the sweet stories lwj tells about him, hard to think of that ghastly figure as the one who puts such a sweet smile on lwj's otherwise stoic face.

But as time progresses mxy notices that wwx is getting fainter and fainter, getting ready to move on. And one night lwj gets drunk and he mistakes mxy for wwx, and claws at him while he sobs for an hour and just tells him "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry" until he eventually passes out. And mxy knows that no matter how much lwj tells him that it's okay, that in every lifetime wwx has returned to him, he doesn't need to in this one...no matter how much looking at lwj makes his heart flutter, makes him ache to press their lips together, makes him want to let the ghost that's been following him for years now disappear forever, and take wwx’s place to live happily with this strange, stoic man...mxy cannot allow lwj to suffer any longer.

And so that night, mxy pulls out the pictures of the ritual lwj had given him and he draws it out on his own floor, hands shaking but determined to see this through. He says the words he needs to say, spills the blood he needs to spill, and just before he goes he makes sure that his soul cannot return to his body, this time on purpose, to allow wwx to live out the rest of his days with lwj. And as his soul is ripped from his body painfully and in a bright flash of power, mxy swears he hears someone sob a "I'll save you next time, I swear. Thank you."

When lwj busts down mxy's door the next morning, silver eyes snap to his face, startled and confused and wet with tears. There's a whispered, "lan zhan?" And lwj crumples to his knees.

Canon Jiang Cheng tag, well as stated multiple times, was made for his character discussion based on things he did in the novel as close as possible. So 'but jc did xyz in CQL/Donghua' that were adaptational changes aren't really a source/point of talk, because he never did those things in the novel (such as the cliff scene that didn't happen in the first place and is CQL exclusive) but even then? CQL made sure to highlight he was at least going to injure/cut off LWJ's hand to make WWX fall so seeing that WWX let go. The entire scene afterwards focuses on LWJ's horror and JC's smirk. (maybe other adaptations decide to somewhat go softer on his character but they still carried some novel points in them too) That aside, did JC successfully kill WWX in the novel? Did he land the killing blow? No, but not because of lack of trying on his part, he did his best to kill him. And your point JC not killing WWX in the next life? Dude went around killing anyone who reminded him/he suspected was WWX (who if it were in fact WWX who he thought was possessing those people zidian's strike would've yeeted him back out of life) and even after zidian confirmed it wasnt wwx he would still take them back to torture them. Didn't LWJ take WWX under his protection though? And you know Wei Wuxian never calls Jiang Cheng his shidi/brother even once after resurrection? Much less hold love for him (why would he when jc was the first and foremost force in killing him in his first life.?) And I'd like to ask you for source on the "And most of dc are either up to no good or they lost their minds, how do you know they won’t harm other ppl if you don’t capture them" because novel absolutely does not specify the people he tortured were causing trouble like that but it did specify he'd 'caught the wrong guy again.' And someone else covered Jin Ling and Jiang Cheng already so I'm not going to go into detail, its here. But also, loving someone and hurting them aren't always exclusive, I agree that Jc loves JL and JL loves him, but that doesn't mean JC never hurt him either *(for one there are scenes of him hitting JL in anger in the novel) So you’re not gonna mention that JC tried to save WWX from the wens despite it’s the moment he’s supposed to hate WWX the most. I mean, its just like the time he promised to keep the dogs away, its the tragedy of their relationship, jc cared once about wwx a lot, but then? he declared him an enemy to the entire sects even though he and wwx only agreed to defect, he led the siege and supplied the most disciples to kill wwx, like the reason people dont bring up 'oh but he promised to keep the dogs away or how he rushed out to distract the guards once' is because it stops being relevant when he intentionally brings the dog, and he intentionally leads a siege to kill wei wuxian. Or he still kept WWX’s chenquing clean after 16 years? As a guarantee 'if wwx comes back he'll come for his flute and i'll know' so he can kill him again, alot of your points are explained the novel. Or how he still tried to save WWX at Guanyin Temple? Can you tell me the source/quote for this one too? Or how many dialogues of him telling WWX “Don’t be too reckless, you’re gonna get hurt”?? During their younger days before jc grew to hate wwx

canon tag was made specially because people mentioning his more negative actions/things he did in the novel that were terrible were called anti and harassed to keep the content out of the jc tag, even though novel quotes were provided with the text or even when the post was only novel text. So if you're going to do a repeat of that at least provide source with your interpretation too because it seems like you're just talking about CQL, because just saying 'jc secretly loves wwx because he kept the flute' doesn't make sense when he killed him (yea so what if he didnt deal the final blow? he was sulky about that in the novel too because he wanted to, he was the active leader of 'lets kill wwx' siege) and he continued on to killing ppl who reminded him of wwx? (Highlighted in chap 10 of novel)

And this is a whole separate tag made for all the negative things he did, which you can just, y'know block if you don't want to read them?

.JC antis, you can’t just pick every flaw a character has and leave out anything that makes that character “good”/”morally gray” and claim “This is canon”. This is very one sided view of a character. Your shallow interpretation of a character is not superior.

Every character gets uwu-fied by some parts of the fandom, it’s nothing new, it’s all for fun. Stop trying to act like you have big brain and “THe fANdOM ruINs tHiS ChARActER”. WWX in canon is not a uwu character like the fandom potrays either. JC is not a special girl.

So the important thing to remember is that Wei Wuxian starts off the book liking Lan Wangji and that doesn’t actually really change. What changes is whether or not he thinks Lan Wangji likes him. He thinks he’s fascinating and curious in Cloud Recesses, fusses and worries about him in Wen Indoctrination and while yes, they are fighting throughout the Sunshot Campaign, it doesn’t change the fact that Wei Wuxian likes him.

What they lack more than anything is time and security to build things. While some of the collapse in their relationship is to their teenager abilities to handle large feelings (Wei Wuxian wants to poke and tease and flirt, Lan Wangji wants to either run away or otherwise tsundere panic through the cutest boy he’s ever met taking an interest in teasing him in a way that he can’t tell if it’s serious or not), even back in Cloud Recesses lectures we can see Wei Wuxian starting to get through little by little to Lan Wangji.

But that whole first life is marked both by disaster striking in a war that devastates both of their homes at the very beginning when they are seventeen and the aftermath of the war where people love to talk shit about how much they hate each other. It’s hard to believe that it’s not true when it’s everywhere. There is a sense of yearning and missed chances in the Yunmeng and especially Yiling meetings. A wistfulness and a bitterness that they can’t seem to surmount these challenges because they do seek each other out even still after what’s happened. As Wei Wuxian says, their relationship was never as bad as people said, but they lacked the time and security that they needed to build something solid.

There are two more things that I would like to point out on their relationship in that first life. The first is that when we see them at Nightless City, Wei Wuxian is pretty clearly in the middle of an emotional breakdown by the time they interact and the things that he says here are not ever proven to be true even at any point in Wei Wuxian’s narrations. He has never thought that Lan Wangji hated him from the start and is lashing out to hurt him because he has finally broken under the heavy weight on him that he has borne alone for years.

The other thing is that Wei Wuxian has a huge barrier in his first life that becomes sort of irrelevant in his second is the nature of the golden core sacrifice. It informs so much of Wei Wuxian’s decisions and choices and how he keeps people at arm’s length so they can’t see it. Lan Wangji has a barrier to get over that is going to take a lot of time and trust before Wei Wuxian will even let him close enough to see that. A thing that at points he seems to regret, because it is actually the biggest line that he refuses to let Lan Wangji cross. If he gets close enough, he’ll see and Wei Wuxian isn’t ready to find out what Lan Wangji will do.

I guess to sum up, my feelings on their relationship is that they have always yearned for each other even from those early days, but there are so many outside factors that it makes it hard to tell how much of this regard existed till you know where the secrets are. Wei Wuxian stops chasing Lan Wangji because Lan Wangji could see the secret he holds most dear and he is not ready for that, but that doesn’t mean that he didn’t want it still. They stumble and gravitate around each other because the barriers that lie between them are less because of what they want and more because they had one of the shittiest adolescences of their generation.

They’re both so happy when Wei Wuxian comes back to life and they finally just get to be together without any of those barriers there anymore. There’s still fights to make up for and secrets to share, but they finally have the time and safety to do what they actually want. Which is hang out together constantly and talk. It’s adorable. I love it.

This could get long but I'll try to be as brief as I can for a change because I'm not feeling too well so I might get hopelessly sidetracked if I go on for too long here. Also I'll throw around the word love a lot here, and by that I am including unhealthy definitions of it.

The thing about Yi City is that the entire story is about memories. CQL plays with that a bit, but that post was about the novel first and foremost, and so I'll stick to the novel.

By the time WWX even gets to Yi City, the key players except XY are dead. Their story is, in a sense, done. XXC himself, arguably the most important person in this story, is never even really allowed to exist outside of memories - it's just a matter of whose. XY and AQ both express their love through remembering XXC, like LWJ remembers WWX. They do this initially by preserving candy, but later also by trying to assert which version of the events will ultimately prevail. And of course, SL, the one person to walk out of Yi City, keeps XXC's soul, yes, but he also seems to intend to keep alive the things XXC once stood for, which is also an act of remembrance.

Like, obviously Yi City is a horrible, horrible thing. XXC being as kind as he is did not help him in the slightest, just like being loved did not help WWX. Loving and being loved - these things can't hold a candle to the profound injustice of the world. But because he loved all those he met as much as he was able, there's a mural of memories held by those who loved him in return. We know so much about him simply because his kindness made an impression on people, and they remembered and fought for his memories to be passed on to other keepers. Usually, the keeping of memories is done by one's family, one's sect. But XXC who dreamed of having a sect that did not rely on bloodlines has his memories told by people who came to love him simply because he loved them. In a world where love is demonstrably useless, XXC's simple acts of love ripple on until WWX is able to get for him the justice he was unable to find in life. It's still horrible but he's managed to carve out a silver lining where there wouldn't be any if he hadn't been so loved.

In other words, it's like... Yes, Yi City sucks, but if WWX draws comfort from at least LWJ knowing what he was trying to live for, I have to imagine XXC would draw great comfort from the people he helped - plus WWX and the juniors, etc - all coming to understand what he was trying to do, you know? It's not a happy ending but it's as happy an ending as I think can be salvaged out of a story which ends far before any hero can swoop in and save the day, if that makes sense. If you can't be happy in life, at least having people after your death say "That was a person who deserved to be happy" is a comfort, the way I see it?
