Now that the Oscar’s nominations are out, i have to say that 2024 in film was quite underwhelming. At least in the ones that were pushed in the mainstream. That being said lots of indie films were released last year that definitely deserved to be seen in the cinema.
So if by any chance your local cinema is playing Hard Truths, Nickel Boys, Sing Sing or I’m Still Here or I Saw The TV Glow you definitely should see them.
Some of these films can be hard watches because of the topics that they deal with but they’re very good.
I definitely recommend to watch Nickel Boys though.

The whiplash of being emotional and thoughtful about Belle 2021 and then also thinking about Chikami Shinjiro and his fucking CROCS.
#I remember seeing them last time I watched the movie too.#noticed them first when he finished his kayak practice but it’s at a distance and I’m like nah no way they’re prob just slippers#and then at the bus station THEYRE REALLY REAL. THEY GAVE MY BOY CROCS. THIS DORK#God and his fucking bit of going omg *scratches neck* *shy chuckle* *single head of sweat* d-does that mean you like me?#and the way the movie lingers on that scene for an unreasonable length of time. the rest of the movie has a certain pace to it and then#we just hang out here and watch him stew in the awkwardness like. where I gonna run king? scenes not over. get back here.#it’s so deliberate and I think my final verdict is that it’s hilarious 10/10 good film making#belle 2021#Belle#belle movie#belle anime

So last week on my boyfriend’s week off, we made the mistake of watching The Boys and the Lord of the Rings trilogy at the same sort of time, and I call this a mistake cuz every single time Karl Urban was on screen my boyfriend, in his best Butcher impression, would go ‘ughie we need to kill omelanda’ during lotr

it’s sooo fucked up that boromir’s last words were “I’ve failed.” literally sooososo fucked up
#lotrposting#it’s interesting how the scene in the movie & specifically what boromir says differs from the book tho#I mean they made it more dramatic for the film obviously but also the speech in which he essentially accepts aragorn as the/his king#while in the book he specifically calls the people of minas tirith his Own people; not aragorn’s#elli rambles#also fun fact I watched the fellowship of the ring with my brother a few days ago#and after boromir’s death scene my brother (who normally thinks shipping is stupid and I always try to make everything gay)#said ‘okay yeah I ship them now’#and he seemed pretty serious? so gay win 🌈💖 (getting my brother who is occasionally homophobic by accident (often either bc he wants to#annoy me or just by virtue of being a thirteen year old cishet boy)) to ship two guys#anyway. I’m not even especially fond of the lad (he’s. fine. shrug. good for showing the power & danger of the ring even on good people)#but this is soo evil to me. he redeemed himself through fighting for merry & pippin (or at least if you see it like that) but his last#thought was that he’d died in dishonour and as a failure#he couldn’t withstand the power of the ring and couldn’t return to protect his home#also aragorn choosing to keep boromir’s betrayal a secret so that it wouldn’t tarnish gimli and legolas’s memory of him…#tolkien

Watching this new Scott Pilgrim show almost drove me to reopen the book.
#not because it’s bad or anything#but because I was wanted to read along as I watched so I can see how faithful this mofo is to the source#speaking of that; this first episode is going really FAST#I mean hardly any build up or introductions like in the book or the film just straight into it with Scott meeting Ramona and hitting it off#and speedrunning all the other stuff that leads up to the brawl with Matthew Patel#honestly it feels like the show expects me to already know some version of the story#mainly the movie ver#which in turn leads to me suspect the show is gonna pull some fucky stuff and go off the set course#(a feeling that is becoming validated by the lack of Crash and The Boys at the warehouse concert)#and that’s fine cause I’m a firm believer in things being allowed to change#+ we already got a decent adaptation of the book with the movie#so really I’m just curious how they’re gonna switch it up#on another note I like the animation. it’s kinda janky but not in an eye hurty way but more of an interesting way#scott pilgrim#scott pilgram vs the world#scott pilgram takes off#comic books

really unhappy with what we do in the shadows rn tbh. i want my boy to kill
#what happened to the fucked up shit. why don’t they want to commit to the fucked up shit anymore#also maybe why the humor is falling flat for me?#the original film and first season or two of the show relies on the juxtaposition between the darkness of vampire stories vs the mundanity#incompetence and silliness of the mockumentary format#watching the pilot right after watching s5e10 is like. complete whiplash wrt tone and style#i don’t like silly little gags with no setup and nonsensical fantasy lore that doesn’t really tie into the whole Vampire thing#tbh i do get why people still like the show like maybe i’m just not the right audience but the show has changed a LOT without actually#committing to any of the big writing choices that could possibly make the writers get creative about the dynamics between the characters smh#whatever whatever i just miss when my boy was my boy. rip#and when there were consequences for the characters. and payoff.#and humor. but you know. whatever

Hearing bits and pieces of “I Can Do Anything” throughout all of The Boys season 3 was just perfection. It really set up that final scene and made it so much better imo. So I watched purple hearts for Nicholas galitzine - and it sure was something.
And like hear me out - it was an egregious piece of American military and conservative political propaganda barely covered by a poorly written rom com
But as a politically left leaning queer woman who was raised in a politically conservative church situation, boy oh boy do I have complicated feelings about the characters in this film.
Or not so much the characters that were really two dimensional but the ideas behind the characters.
#I don’t know#I’m writing a fic about it that I might not publish#it’s mainly me working through my feelings#but yeah the main character#awful though he was#reminded me strongly of some of the men and boys from childhood#that were just trying to do the right thing and were being really badly led astray as to what the right thing once#and then they’d grow up and solidify into men who think that they are doing the right thing#as they hurt everyone around them#I just wasn’t expecting to have such complicated feelings about this trash propaganda film#nicholas galitzine#this is what I get for watching an actors entire filmography
