So I watched purple hearts for Nicholas galitzine - and it sure was something.
And like hear me out - it was an egregious piece of American military and conservative political propaganda barely covered by a poorly written rom com
But as a politically left leaning queer woman who was raised in a politically conservative church situation, boy oh boy do I have complicated feelings about the characters in this film.
Or not so much the characters that were really two dimensional but the ideas behind the characters.
#I don’t know#I’m writing a fic about it that I might not publish#it’s mainly me working through my feelings#but yeah the main character#awful though he was#reminded me strongly of some of the men and boys from childhood#that were just trying to do the right thing and were being really badly led astray as to what the right thing once#and then they’d grow up and solidify into men who think that they are doing the right thing#as they hurt everyone around them#I just wasn’t expecting to have such complicated feelings about this trash propaganda film#nicholas galitzine#this is what I get for watching an actors entire filmography

Reece Shearsmith Vs. Alexander Siddig
Propaganda
Reece Shearsmith - (The League Of Gentlemen (seasons 1-3), tlc) - "...he has the LONGEST eyelashes in the entire world and the BLUEST eyes and I am really enamoured by the lil scar on his cheek that he got from an accident when he was a kid!" Full text propaganda below the cut.
Alexander Siddig - (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) - The very first actor I ever had a crush on.
Master Poll List | How to submit propaganda | What is vintage? (FAQ)
Additional propaganda below the cut
Reece Shearsmith:
I'd highly recommend people checking out him as Matthew Parker in one of the stories in the League's Christmas episode, the 70's style outfit and blonde wig suit him SO well. picture here:
Ok so given that many of the characters he plays in The League Of Gentlemen are purposefully made to be kinda grotesque and yet he STILL manages to look cute most of the time??? There's also not many actors I'm willing to check out basically their entire filmography for, but not only is he such a brilliant comedic character actor, he has a great knack for making you sympathise with some of the most bizarre and sometimes down right terrifying characters! (and yes I'm also watching everything he's been in because he's hot, sue me) He was also in a kinda weird comedy series called 'tlc' where he played a very hapless and cute doctor but it's so hard to find pictures of him in this since it only ran for 1 series and there's like 300 other bits of media called 'tlc' :( & also as Ross Gaines specifically in that one scene wear he's wearing a dressing gown. (ignore the scene that comes directly after this picture though lol... iykyk...) picture here:
Ok and final remarks: he has the LONGEST eyelashes in the entire world and the BLUEST eyes and I am really enamoured by the lil scar on his cheek that he got from an accident when he was a kid!
Also may i direct all sapphic's attention to the majesty that is him as Judee Levinson... you're welcome <3 picture here:
Alexander Siddig:
"At my first meeting with Garak I became visibly flustered. That was entirely my choice. It wasn’t written into the script. So I set off in that direction right from the get-go. And Andy (Andrew Robinson) obviously loved it, and that character became a series-long character because of that first scene. It’s an innocuous little scene on one of the little replimats on the station, and it only lasted like five seconds but it packed a punch because of the visible, kind of a charged, discomfort. That really made it. [...] I subconsciously keep that door open with just about every character that I play, and I always keep it as ambiguous as possible. One of my first roles was in [the TV movie] A Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia with Ralph Fiennes and I played Feisal and again, not in the script, but that was charged with homoerotica and implied homosexuality. I’d just come fresh off that project. And I’ve done it numerous times since, characters that are written straight I just make sure are not quite straight. That’s just one of my things, probably because I’m not quite straight myself and that’s probably perfect." - Alexander Siddig in a recent interview with comicsbeat.com

Since I’ve seen criticism on Stephanie’s performance as Vaggie here and there, I feel like defending her a little bit.
As someone only got to know Stephanie since Hazbin Hotel, I was very surprised to look at her filmography on IMDb, because I had watched Encanto, Maya and the Three, Q-Force, The Legend of Vox Machina, One Day at A Time, and Modern Family way before Hazbin Hotel, but it never occurred to me once that these characters were played by the same VA / actor. I think it alone kind of speaks how versatile she is.
Some people say they find it weird that Vaggie singing voice does not matching her speaking voice, but I’ve been suspected the different voices were intentional since the beginning. If you listen to her lines in ‘Happy Day in Hell’, ‘You Didn’t Know’ and ‘Finale’ closely, Stephanie can actually sing at a lower register. ‘Whatever It Takes’ and ‘More Than Anything Reprise’ happen when Vaggie is alone by herself or with Charlie, where she feels private and safe to be entirely herself. I think someone as guarded as Vaggie, wears a tougher shell in public but has a softer interior deep down — her different voices are just a manifestation of the two sides of her.
What made me have more faith in my theory is that Stephanie revealed at TCC that Vivienne approached her to voice Vaggie. Since Vaggie’s background did change a lot from the pilot to the series, I assume that Viv pictured a different voice for Vaggie too. An actor who has the range to deliver very different voices. Being a queer Latina is probably a plus.
What I learnt about Stephanie throughout a year catching up on her multiple works is that she does take her craft seriously. If you watch enough of her voiceover works outside Hazbin Hotel, you will know she absolutely has the ability to convey various emotions in her voice, even in that iconic gruffer Rosa Diaz voice. So the reason some people criticize that she sounds “not there” or “not putting in effort” as Vaggie is more likely due to the direction that she was given. Voiceovers are different from live-actions where actors do not get the full scripts often and do not even opposite the other actors most of the time, so they rely a lot on the voice directors giving them instructions. Again back to that Viv knows what voice she wants for her characters, I think that the very monotone performance is also intentional.
P.S. I had the thought of asking Stephanie about Vaggie’s voice acting at her TCC solo panel but the line for Q&A was too long so I settled with watching the panel at a closer distance. Maybe next time. Or wait for Viv to finally open up more about Vaggie’s changes from the pilot to the series one day *fingers crossed* (sometimes I get the weird feeling that Viv has been avoiding talking about Vaggie in depth due to spoilers)

I think I sent you a similar ask a few months ago but here I am, back with some mildly new info! I do the occasional production gig in NYC but have actor friends who get consistent work (closest I got to being an actor was background on Joker 2 👍) and basically, things are still very weird in Hollywood. They have been since covid, with everyone anticipating the strikes and fewer projects being greenlit, then the actual strikes, and now who knows what will happen after the fires. I know it’s not a 1:1 comparison, but the film/tv acting scene in the UK tends to follow the same curves.
I would be surprised if Ewan’s agent well all in on one role without confirmation—could certainly happen, but it sounds like they’ve been in the business a while, and would likely have still encouraged him to go out for other things while that was up in the air. Even if you’re pinned (asked to hold the dates for shooting and not take other jobs during that time) a lot of agents will still have you audition for stuff that overlaps just in case. Only one person gets the role, and business wise it’s just smarter to play the field, so to speak!
But it could also have been he was committed to a project that just didn’t get off the ground, so it was never announced. A lot of things are being scaled back and cancelled, because a lot of studios are losing money on just insane levels. And as much as I hope other countries will divest from the states (seriously, save yourselves) whatever happens with the economy here is gonna be felt there.
Not to make it all doomerism! Things are still being greenlit, and HOTD is still huge. Ewan will also likely be auditioning during season 3 filming- Assuming Aemond dies in, I would bet he has something new announced very soon after the season ends!
I would say modern fandom is also at the root of people’s impatience to see Ewan cast in something new. Not to sound like an old woman giving it the “back in my day” spiel, but before the rise of TikTok, Instagram, etc. fandoms moved a lot slower, and it wasn’t a problem to wait a couple of years between projects to see your faves on screen again.
With the increase of popularity of streaming services dropping entire series at once and people needing to constantly consume, be entertained and then move on, people perhaps have unrealistic expectations.
Ewan still has an entire filmography you can go back and watch. Existing pictures of him aren’t going to wear out from being looked at too much. It simply isn’t reasonable to expect a continuous conveyor belt of new content. And if you feel restless, why not create while you wait? I appreciate fan fiction is not for everyone, but there are other mediums to explore; gif making, video edits, fan art, etc.
Slow your roll and just enjoy being part of the community. You aren’t stopping to appreciate what’s already there if you’re constantly seeking out the newest thing.

MONTHLY MEDIA: October 2024
I'm not one for horror so don't expect too much spooky stuff out of this recap.
……….FILM……….
Dredd (2012) Karl Urban deserves greater recognition for this if for no other reason that that frown. I doubt we'll ever get another one of these so to me the ending sends a clear message that the only way to avoid becoming a bad apple is to quit the bushel.
Perfect Blue (1997) Loosely knowing the premise, I thought I was prepared for what I watched but HO BOY was I not! Some truths are timeless and I think the now dated technology makes it all hit even harder. So well directed and a perfect use of animation. This is going to stick with me for a while.
Millennium Actress (2001) After Perfect Blue, I wanted to continue with the director's filmography (Satoshi Kon) and wasn't ready for how this would FLOOR ME. Such an emotional and lovely depiction of the intermingling between art and life and what drives an artist throughout their career. And the trope of characters playing multiple roles in different time periods will always land for me.
Death Becomes Her (1992) I only know Meryl Streep from this, The Devil Wear Prada, and the Mamma Mia series so to me, she's strictly a comedic actor. Given its subject matter, this continues to age surprisingly well.
Hansel & Gretel (2002) Felt like a made-for-tv movie but turns out it had a theatrical release! I did laugh at the Boogeyman subbing in for the Sandman and the design of the Witch's oven is cool, but that's about it.
……….TELEVISION……….
Dandadan (Episode 1.01 to 1.04) Teens fight aliens and ghosts? Heck yes. I will say the first ep has an alien abduction scene that almost turned me off of the entire show but once you get past that, everything else is really great. Fun worldbuilding, clever rules, and at its core it's a charming romcom. Just promise me you'll watch past the abduction.
Neon Genesis Evangelion (Episode 1.23 to 1.26) Okay so that's the ending! Not what I expected but you know what? I don't mind it. I know there's a movie that continues on after this BUT if it ended here I think I'd be okay with it. What a strange series.
Love is Blind (Episode 7.01 to 7.13) I keep thinking "why would anyone still sign up for this?" but here I am into another season asking "why would anyone still watch this?" And dang that reunion was meeeeeeeessy.
Love is Blind UK (Episode 1.01 to 1.04) This iteration feels a little more sincere, but that may be because the cast seems a little older or because the machine hasn't yet pumped out minor celebrities so folks don't know what might lie ahead? Either way I'm a fan.
……….YOUTUBE……….
Dead Man's Bones (Ft. Ryan Gosling) - Documentary Special Presentation by Pitchfork While spooky season is nearly over, the music of Dead Man's Bones is evergreen. Watch this, if you haven't seen it, and especially listen to the album if you haven't heard it. VIDEO
Game of Clones by Just Write As much a reflection on how artists can't create in a vacuum as it is a critique of the modern tv landscape. There's a lot on influence and the different ways artists react to prior work that I found both informative for my own approach and just generally really interesting. VIDEO
Why Are Movies So Obsessed With Trains? and The Infinite Possibilities of Train Action Scenes | Blue Flame Special by Patrick H. Willems I love trains. VIDEO (Obsessed) VIDEO (Blue Flame Special)
Black Cops Won't Save Us by F.D Signifier I'm not going to be able to add anything new to what's already been said in this video. VIDEO
……….READING……….
Hallowe'en Party by Agatha Christie (Complete) Very excited I found this at the start of the month but turns out Halloween plays a very small role. Not one of her strongest, perhaps because I felt like I'd pieced the mystery together far too soon.
Swords and Deviltry by Fritz Leiber (Complete) There's something so wonderful about a story where two guys meet and immediately clock each other as awesome and become best friends. Such a delight. The end may be a worn out trope that you could spot a mile away, but it's all so evocative and swiftly paced that I just have to shrug and accept it was written in 1970.
Beauty by Kerascoët & Hubert (Complete) I wish I knew about where to find more comics like this. The artwork is loose and evocative but filled with details when necessary (and the COLOURS are so fantastic and are contained to each page to really highlight the format). The writing is also killer as it's both mature and whimsical. Every time I read this I'm reminded of just how fantastic it is.
The Adventures of Tintin: Red Rackham's Treasure (Complete) Grew up watching the cartoon yet never read any of the comics so when I saw this at a thrift, I was really excited. While mostly self-contained, it really does feel like it's part of a bigger story and I suppose I was expecting a little more pulp adventure? The art is stellar so I'll continue to pick these up as I see them.
……….AUDIO……….
Slugger by Sasami (2024) Two solid songs though I admit I tend to prefer her fuzzier/more dangerous-sounding tracks from Squeeze. Here's hoping the full album has a good mix.
Search Engine (Podcast) Always a great listen but their recent two-parter about why it's so hard to tax billionaires in the united states was a particular standout.
……….GAMING……….
Oz: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) The Tuesday Crew just relocated some migrating birds and are now choosing from their myriads of quests. You can read all about them here!
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (Nintendo) Top down Zelda is always going to be great, and this art style is 100% what I want out of games. Do I like the summoning mechanic? Sure. Do I think it leads to game design feeling half-baked? Yes. But I will say it stuck the landing so overall: big fan.
And that's it. See you in November!

Because you said Taiwan might be your favorite country for BLs. What are some of your favorites or ones you think are underrated? I'm just looking for recs 😊
Why Anon, I am so glad you asked! I have such a soft spot for Taiwan. Thai BLs are usually most people's starting point (understandably so), and Japan and Korea get a fair amount of attention and praise, but no one should be sleeping on Taiwan.
I don't know your level of experience with Taiwanese BLs, so I may be repeating some that you're already very familiar with, but hopefully there's something new for you in there!
Also I have not watched everything, and still have some to catch up on, so if anyone else wants to chime in with something I am missing, please do!
History 3: Trapped
My official entry into BL obsession. A cop and a gangster falling in love while trying to figure out who is responsible for the deaths of people they both cared about. Side couple is the most innocent and naive policeman in existence and a bad boy who just wants to be his househusband. Co-written by Lin Pei Yu, whose name is behind a lot of the shows on this list, so her filmography on MDL is a great resource.
History 4: Close to You
Warning Anon, some people really hate this one. It has a stepbrothers romance, so depends on your comfort level with that kind of story. And there is some dubcon. There are a few bits I usually skip on rewatch, though overall I still enjoy their romance. But for me, the real selling point is couple number two, who are my all time favorite friends to lovers couple. They are both disasters in their own way, but when they fall in love, it's so damn romantic and sweet.
History 1: Obsessed
Lol, yes, I like the History series a lot. This is just a single episode, they didn't have the money for full series at this point, so they have three one hour stand alone stories. The other two in season 1 were pretty forgettable for me, but this one stuck. Another warning here, this one does live up to the title and there is dubcon. As the first season, it's clearly low budget. But you can tell it's a labor of love. I have a fondness for it, the acting is really good, and actor Teddy (who is gay and married irl) has talked about how much it meant to him to do a queer story that was different from the norm of what had been portrayed up to that point.
I enjoyed other History series, but the above are my favorites. Also you may have already heard, History 3: Make Our Days Count is very, very good, but has a tragic ending that was excruciating to get through. If you want to dive in, just be prepared.
DNA Says Love You
This is one I feel is super underrated. I almost never see people talk about it, but it is so incredibly sweet and uplifting. It does start a little bit slow, but it picks up once Amber arrives. Amber is the most precious blorbo ever, and I just want to put him in my pocket and keep him safe. Also, I don't want to spoil anything, because it is plot-related, but it has a form of representation that we almost never get to see in QLs, and is handled well.
See You After Quarantine?
A very quick watch, takes place almost entirely over video chat. This is a really fun one, it's a romance between a Japanese man and a Taiwanese man, and considering the limitations of the format, they do a fantastic job of selling two people falling in love when they cannot see each other in person.
Kiseki: Dear to Me
I don't know if anyone could have missed this one, as it's so popular on here, but it's such a good series. Totally lives up to the hype. Basically Taiwan's version of "what if the entire mafia was gay, and also bad at their jobs".
Unknown
Anon, this one will make you feel things. I literally had to stop watching because it was hurting too much to wait between episodes, and I needed to be able to binge it. It's another brothers romance, in this case an adoptive brother, but it was so beautifully done. There is quite a bit of angst, but the payoffs are worth it.
First Note of Love
Another really sweet one. Two people struggling with where they are in life lifting each other up, and finding their own balance in the process. A rare BL reappearance for an actor, as Charles Tu from History 4 comes back to work with a new partner, and they're fantastic together. Also a very cute side couple, and genuinely good music (if singing scares you in BLs).
I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but hopefully this gives you a few ideas of things to watch!

Have you seen fantabulosa? As a film it’s so-so but I spent the entire time wondering what the fuck Michael Sheen is trying to do with his performance only to then look up videos of the real life person he is portraying and realising he is indeed the greatest actor of his generation….also yet another repressed effeminate gay man role for him lol
I haven’t seen it yet but when I say I’m watching his whole filmography I’m serious about that so I’ll get there eventually. This is so much though I can’t wait

Choose your own And-venture*
So when my Andrew crush was revived, I realized how little of his filmography I’ve actually seen… or even heard of? I really had no idea where to start, but now that I've been making my way through it, here are some notes that hopefully help you find the Andrew you’re looking for! (I will keep updating as I watch more!)
*🙈 I am so sorry--once this entered my brain, it became the only title.
(We all know the gist of Spider-Man and The Social Network, right?)
Big “precious bean” energy:
Boy A (2007)
🏆 Won a best actor BAFTA!
Aesthetic: Sooo young and bashful/endearing
Plays: Jack Burridge, a boy who is starting over after years in juvenile detention.
Love story?: Yes, and it makes me all 🥹🥹🥹.
⚠️ Childhood stuff can be intense.
Would I rewatch? 👍 (I already have lol)
Never Let Me Go (2010)
Aesthetic: Shaggy hair to shaved head
Plays: Tommy D., a young man living in a wild dystopian England.
Love story?: More like love triangle!
👎 The characters are kids at first, so Andrew isn’t in it the whole time.
Would I rewatch? 👍 (and I'm currently reading the book because I found the movie so interesting!)
Promising college student ("non-Eduardo Saverin" division):
Lions for Lambs (2007)
First feature film!
Aesthetic: Cute enough frat boy in a hideous shirt.
Plays: Todd Hayes, a privileged, disaffected yet apparently promising college student.
Love story?: No
👍 Despite the ridiculously famous names in the cast, Andrew has one of the leading roles!
Would I rewatch? 🤔 Maybe? It’s not great, but Andrew does manage to make Todd kind of interesting. (Or at least not totally one-note.)
Portrayals of real people
Hacksaw Ridge (2016)
⭐️Oscar nom #1
Aesthetic: 1940s country bumpkin to blood-covered army medic
Plays: Desmond Doss, a “conscientious cooperator” in WWII.
Love story?: Yes and it’s cute
⚠️ Violence (In a war movie?! What are the odds!)
Would I rewatch? 🤔 Only the beginning (pre-war) because I could not handle Andrew in peril. (And I really liked The Pacific, so I did not expect to be so freaked out!)
Breathe (2017)
Aesthetic: ‘50s sportsman/adventurer/“tea broker”
Plays: Robin Cavendish, who lived for decades on a respirator after contracting polio (then a death sentence)
Love story?: Yes, and it’s lovely and inspiring and all the things. 🥹(I’m not entirely sure why they are so in love, because the movie really speeds through everything pre-polio, but Andrew and Claire Foy do sell it.)
⚠️ Full disclosure, I did cry at this one.
Would I rewatch? 👍
Weird with a side of conspiracy theory/mystery
Red Riding: The Year of Our Lord 1974 (2009)
Aesthetic: All in on the ’70s—long hair, sideburns, bellbottoms, etc.
Character: Eddie, a young reporter who uncovers shady goings-on.
Love story?: Kind of?
⚠️Nudity
⚠️ Violence
Would I rewatch? 👎 Just could not get into it--didn’t like his character, found the story to be meh/confusing....
Under the Silver Lake (2018)
Aesthetic: Stoner slacker in graphic tees and skinny jeans
Plays: Sam, an aimless L.A. 30-something who becomes obsessed with his neighbor’s disappearance
Love story?: Ehhh… kind of, I guess? Not formally, though.
⚠️Nudity (prob the most out of all of these?)
Would I rewatch? 👍 and this is not my type of movie at all. For as weird as it is, it's also... fun?
Rom-Dram
We Live in Time (2024)
Aesthetic: Clean-cut, sometimes bespectacled, lots of cozy sweaters
Plays: Tobias, a sensitive and nerdy Weetabix salesman going through some major life upheaval.
Love story?: Yes, the movie revolves around it.
⚠️Nudity
Would I rewatch? 🤔 When I first saw it, hard no. (With these actors, my expectations were high. And the movie did not convince me that Almut and Tobias were actually a perfect match. 🙈) But I did love Tobias, so I would watch again for him. 👍

for the good omens ask game— a lot since you said you’re traveling! 1, 3, 9, 11, 16, 19, 23, 24!
oh, what an honour to get an ask from op! :D thanks! strap yourselves in this is gonna be a looong one!
1. when did you first watch/discover good omens, and how did you find out about it?
i actually first heard about it after the first or second trailer for s1 dropped! idk how and when exactly that was (it's been a while) but i remember thinking 'oh i gotta watch this, it looks funny and has david tennant in it'. guess what. i didn't watch it until s2 came out and the entire internet was screaming about it. so i finally caved, asked for my friends amazon account (bc she had a prime account) and gave it a shot – the rest is history.
3. have you created any fanart or fanfiction, or really any content for the fandom?
i have created some gifs! you can find them here
9. have you seen any other work by david tennant and/or michael sheen?
oh yeah LOADS. i've been a fan of DT since i first watched doctor who back in 2011? or 2012? and i've seen the twilight saga films lots of times (aro was always a fave).
now, After-GO, i've seen/listened to a lot of davids stuff (like idk, 50 or 60%? which is a lot bc he has done soo much things) and i'm currently "working on" michaels filmography :) 'm watching masters of sex atm and i just bought tickets for the cinema run of Nye, since i wasn't able to see it in person when i was in london 2 weeks ago, sadly.
11. what is (if you read) your favourite type of human au for good omens? (ex. coffee shop au, surgeons au, plant store au
i adored almost every human au i've read so far!! but the two i'm obsessed with are that one actors au everyone and their mother knows and read (Slow Show on ao3, don't have a link rn sorryy) and the formula 1 au (idk how that happened, i don't even watch f1, it's just so good) i'm currently reading.
16. do you know anyone irl who has also watched good omens?
UHM YEAH but that's because i made them watch it lmao. a few of my close friends, that is. but besides them... nope.
19. have you ever read the crowley therapy fic (the most-read fic in the fandom)?
yep! i took me a while bc it was... A Lot but i finished it a few weeks ago. let's say it fucking destroyed me yup yup ✌🏻
23. what's a good omens headcanon that you considered canon?
idk if this is considered a headcanon but... they kissed in 1941. 100%.
24. what's a theory for season 3 that you NEED to be included?
hmm i'm not sure. like, i really like all those theories going around, but i'm traumatised by bbc sherlock so i'm trying not to get my hopes up lmao. again idk if that's considered a headcanon or theory, but i think we're likely gonna see (parts of) crowleys fall and i think it will also play a part in the plot. also: book of life shenanigans. and bamf aziraphale dismantling heaven (and hell). OH and a part 3 of 1941. (maybe a kiss...? 👉🏻👈🏻). yeah.
ask game for people in the good omens fandom!

I feel like the Kathryn Hahn fandom is small on here? But also I feel like she’s just a normal woman, like she doesn’t really come across as Hollywood actress etc. but then again I haven’t watched a whole lot of interviews but she just comes across as a middle aged woman you’d meet on the street.
Yeah, the way she is very chill and down-to-earth makes her likeable, and that is one of the reasons I love supporting her work. It is great that she is finally getting bigger roles and being recognised for her talent and craft (pardon the pun).
As for the fandom size, I'm not entirely sure if it is small or not. There are a lot of Agatha All Along blogs, but I imagine everyone has different favourites. It is nice seeing more people appreciate her work and either discover or rediscover her previous filmography.
I think Kathryn’s approachable and grounded vibe draws many people in. I just hope she doesn't get scared away from Instagram with some of the weird comments! I think it’s more than okay to be a fan of a real person (I’m a fan of so many actors, musicians and footballers) as long as people are mindful of boundaries and parasocial tendencies. Fandoms can be fun places if people respect those boundaries.
It is also nice to see Kathryn supporting the LGBTQIA+ community, especially given the characters she plays. It is refreshing to see someone so connected to the characters and invested in their stories and what their representation means to the community.

It’s so interesting to me to see people commenting about Chris’ career as though he’s supposed to ALWAYS star in top hit movies. Chris has done independent films and people claimed they weren’t good enough or didn’t support, then he had some hits after marvel with Knives out and Defending Jacob. He started to drift a bit and we have various movies that show a change that aligns with his personal mess, but it seems he’s slowly coming back and if the next three movies after RedOne are successful, watch people go back to kissing his ass.
He’s always been a decent actor and I get people have opinions and this isn’t against anyone who clearly sees he has potential and has called out his recent stuff, that critique makes sense, but over the past few years, some act like this man just sucks as an actor or like his career is over or like he hasn’t already made his historic mark in cinema history via Marvel. As a fan I’d love to see him reach a level of success and respect solely for his independent films, so I’m looking forward on what’s to come. 🤗
I think it’s crazy to think any actor will always be in top hit movies. That’s just not going to happen. And I think it could possibly be fans of Chris’ because of Marvel movies. Or maybe they’re new fans and haven’t watched his entire filmography. Before the MCU a lot of Chris’ movies didn’t do well. That is a fact. But for me, his performance was always solid. I like and have rewatched the majority of his movies. I am not a fan of London 😂 that’s one of the few that I just really don’t like.
But I think sometimes people forget the behemoth that is Marvel is not going to be duplicated with other movies, so everything is going to seem small compared to those box office numbers. There’s just no competition.
Chris is a good actor. Chris has had some misses. Chris has his weaknesses. Chris has been in meh movies. Chris has been in bad movies. But Chris is a good actor.

i have a ton of favorite movies and some of my mutuals have put together really good lists BUT honestly if you've never seen any then i think one of the easiest/most rewarding ways to get an idea of what you like is to pick an actor you're intrigued by and play around with their filmography, then let that branch you out into other studios/genres.... bc "old Hollywood" encapsulates like.... an entire system and vast time period so. for me, i was obsessed with musicals as a kid, which got me into audrey hepburn and julie andrews and carol burnett, which got me into their filmographies, then i watched more technicolor musicals.... gone with the wind was my favorite book so then i was in love with vivien leigh, which got me into her films, which made me watch larry olivier's work....... screwball comedies took the reins for a while and kat hepburn/cary grant....... then there were gothic romances/dramas...... i think it's fun to just kind of pick a starting point and follow the rabbit hole. but i can also pull together a specific list if you're really wanting direction on how to start.

Ok another Kinda Like a Cowboy preview because fuck it, I feel bad it's taken so long. “Fuck do you mean, you’re glad?” He asks, absolutely incredulous, like she’s just told him she’s going to the moon.
She laughs out loud this time as she picks up the tweezers. “I mean, it’s… y’know.” She trails off, the metal of the tweezers grinding loudly against the glass in proximity to his ears as they grip it.
“It’s what?”
“It’s uh… it was kinda’ chivalrous.” With that, she yanks the shard out, Cooper hissing between his teeth, not from pain, but because the sensation just feels weird. He fully intends to ask her what the fuck she means by that, but he doesn’t need to — true to form, the Vaultie keeps on yapping. “Back in the Vault,” she starts as she drops the glass shard into an old, discarded bucket beside her, “my dad was really into movies. He didn’t get much free time, but when he did? We’d go down to the Vault library and pick out a holotape from the archives and we’d watch it together.” She picks the cloth back up and proceeds to clean the now glass-free skin. “His favorites were these cowboy movies with this one actor in it—“
Oh fuck.
It’s like time stops for a second while it clicks in his head, and he immediately feels stupid for not considering it earlier. Hank MacLean wasn’t just a fan, he was one of those fans. Not that he ever had any problems with them or anything, but they were a little intense, the ones who knew his entirely filmography word for word. Of course he’d make sure his movies were in that Vault for him. Of course MacLean would watch them with his family, including his daughter — the daughter that Cooper is fucking.

Two questions: top 5 things that the Inexperienced Jared Observer should watch him in
Which Terror ep would you rate as Thee best and why?
OOOH HO HO AND I SHALL ANSWER WITH GUSTO Ok. Barring the obvious three choices (i.e. Foundation, The Terror, and Chernobyl, which are really the biggest powerhouses of Jared's acting abilities to date, and then the tier two shows: Carnival Row, Mad Men (it is a very good show overall but if you're there just for jared it takes a while to get to him and it takes a LONG time to get over him), and The Crown), these are my recommendations:
Certain Women His part in this movie is very short, but honestly. it really shows how much this man can do with such a little character, really proving the "no small parts only small actors" adage that folks like to throw around. I still think about him a lot. really showed such a range with so little and it baffles me to this day. Also it's an anthologized narrative and his part and also Lily Gladstone's role in it (her first film role ever btw) as being a horse lesbian with Kristen Stewart really makes it worth the watch a lot more than some of the other bit part things I've seen him in.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows I genuinely think he's my favorite Moriarty of all time. Full stop. he's just such a wicked delight, and it will forever make me curse Guy Ritchie for only giving him bit parts in some of his other films. absolutely criminal.
The Devil's Violinist @prismatica-the-strange and I absolutely did not go into this film expecting it to be as good as it is. we thought it was gonna be a flop. that Jared Harris was gonna play the devil and we'd have a laugh and that would be that. Incorrect. Turns out the guy playing Paganini is actually a bonafide child prodigy violinist and he blows a LOT of the musician biopic performances out of the water because he REALLY DO BE PLAYING THAT VIOLIN LIKE THAT. Oh and also Jared plays his manager who is literally the devil and he has a pincer beard. and he's a sarcastic little shit and he's just a delight.
Two of Us This was genuinely the first film that made Jared a lifelong stand-out name to me at age fourteen. iykyk. He also fulfilled every McLennon shipper's dreams with this movie by kissing Aidan Quinn full on the lips. So if you want an explanation of why he queer codes a lot of his roles, this is it.
It's really hard to choose between The Beast Must Die, The Quiet Ones, and the 2015 Poltergeist remake, so I suppose I'm gonna go with The Beast Must Die because he's a saucy little asshole and he absolutely looks the prettiest in that. But that's the bitch of it with : this man has made a career of making himself a highlight no matter what kind of bit part you throw at him, so like honestly anything in his filmography is worth watching. But yeah he's so pretty in the beast must die. That's all I got. As for the second question... man why can't I choose all of em? why??? 😭😭😭 I can't pit all these bad bitch episodes against each other at any given moment in time man. I love this show too much. I simply cannot choose. it's all so good. I would like to say it's ep 5 for the way jared acts drunkenly (best drunken performance I've ever seen in my entire life), but then I think about him on the gunwale with blanky talking about the reindeer and laughing and how much Jared literally changed from the script to make that moment so goddamn endearing and human. but then I also remember the moment blanky leaves him like??? DUDE. I can't. I cannot choose. my favorite episode is the whole show.

Also I was thinking abt this earlier but like WAIT ONE OR TWO BILLION LIVES SCHNIZEL IS WILLING TO SACRIFICE????? THATS A LOT OF PPL SCHNIZEL. anyways what I was thinking abt was how when you watch anime (especially dubbed anime. Especially anime from the 00s and the 10s) you inevitably know some actors voices really well resulting in a sort of unparalleled consumption of media with a singular actor that you recognize or even enjoy that you don’t really get in other forms of media. And it can happen even if you don’t like an actor too, which is sort of the nature of anime dubbing being anonymous when going into watching something (unless you look it up before, by nature of being animated). But yeah I have been thinking abt it a lot bc it’s like. You also then get the experience of most of the ppl you know will know at least one character played by, say, Johnny yong bosch, but they might be in entirely different contexts and yet he’s still recognizable, and people still know who he is. I can name like five things jyb has been in that I have seen and that’s probably lowballing. Which again really isn’t the same as when you’re watching movies or smth bc it’s a common experience amongst nearly everyone who watched dubbed anime rather than say ppl who love rom coms and know hugh grants filmography ppl who don’t like romcoms might only know his face. Idk why this is so interesting to me but lmao. Also lelouch is literally doing all of this to be evil to save people. I’m so.

Sympathy for the Devil (2023) Review
It's Collateral in the desert, with the Cruise out and in with the Cage.
Plot: After being forced to drive a mysterious passenger at gunpoint, a man finds himself in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse where it becomes clear that not everything is as it seems.
I do hold a special place in my heart for the acting enigma that is Nicolas Cage. He's truly like no one else, with his over-acting techniques and outrageous performances consistently being enjoyable and interesting to watch, even if he is stuck in a dumpster fire of a movie, and boy there are many turkeys on his filmography! Lately, however, Nicolas Cage has been actually allowed to appear in some solid films, with the wonderfully weird psychological hallucinogenic trip in 2018's Mandy where Cage loses more shit than he usually does; to the hilarious 2022 flick The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent where Cage played himself and gave us the best friend duo we never thought we needed in himself and Pedro Pascal; and this year appearing as Dracula in Renfield. Yep, there was also that Western dud earlier this year called The Old Way which was the most boring interpretation of the Wild West possible where even Cage was on low form, but the less we mention that the better. Be sure to look out for my Top 10 Worst Movies of 2023 list end of the year - The Old Way will surely be making an appearance. Anyway, enough with the shameless self-marketing of my own blog - let's discuss the new Nicolas Cage movie that's gracing our screens!
Sympathy for the Devil is a very by-the-numbers kidnapping movie, that is definitely inspired by the Michael Mann 2004 thriller Collateral, which involves cab driver Jamie Foxx driving around Tom Cruise's assassin as he completes his dirty work. Thrilling movie by the way - can recommend it! As for Sympathy for the Devil, there is nothing new here or original. There's some fun camerawork taking advantage of the neo-noir lighting of Las Vegas at night, and most of the events that transpire are in this one car with these two characters was simplistic yet director Yuval Adler managed to keep this limited setting engaging. Reminded me a bit of that Tom Hardy 2013 drama Locke where he spends the entire movie driving his car and talking to folks on the phone. The script however is very weak, and the twist at the end of the film is extremely predictable, so the movie sorely relies upon its two central performances.
Luckily the two lead actors do solid work. Nicolas Cage is given yet another shot to give an unhinged crazy performance as the maniacal stranger, and he's given a physical makeover too with red dyed hair and a flashy red suit jacket. A lot of the film is spent on him giving out goofy line readings and monologues while rolling his googly eyes and being general Rage Cage. Joel Kinnaman brings vulnerability and humanity as the innocent driver who simply wants to get to the hospital to his wife who is giving birth to his third child. Kinnaman especially can be a very intimidating and strong presence as he's done before in The Suicide Squad as soldier Rick Flag, so seeing him here stripped down was definitely an interesting casting choice.
Overall Sympathy for the Devil is not particularly memorable, with there being no devil in the details of the script. However if you want another excuse to watch Nicolas Cage do his maddenic lunatic thing, then it will be an enjoyable 90 minutes to pass the time. Can't say I'm not a little disappointed - the trailer made the movie seem like much more of a deranged experience than what the final product turned out to be. Ah well, no sympathies for the devil this time around.
Overall score: 5/10
