Strap in if you dare, I’m going to talk about Riko.
Yes, he is a Bad Person. Nothing I’m about to say counters that. However… evil isn’t always so obvious as to dress in black and torture everyone you love. Evil is insidious and nuanced - it can creep in when you aren’t expecting it and have no defences. We’ve been given this incredibly complex and interesting example of it, and we’ve been given it for a reason. Riko is a character worth trying to understand.
Could Riko ever have been saved, and if so what would it have taken? What if he’d been able to follow the Fox path to redemption instead of the Ravens to perdition?
Except both Foxes AND Ravens were traumatised… the thing that ruined Riko was power. Lincoln said it: “nearly all men can stand adversity but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” Who was Riko without power? It’s hard to see.
So I’m fascinated by a different question - how did Riko see Riko?
We know how the Foxes saw him: a low-functioning sociopath with zero coping skills and the personality of a cat trapped in a wall cavity. Presumably that’s not how he saw himself. What kind of headcannon did he construct for himself, what was his own personal mythology?
We know he wanted his father’s approval, he wanted to be number one. We know how badly he dealt with those desires being thwarted.
I know how it feels to be an abandoned child. You feel like the outer edges of a person, with this gaping hole in the centre. It’s not just that you lost a loved one, it’s - how can I say it - it’s like the clasp that lets you hold on to people has been torn out too. Everyone will leave now, and you know it.
(I didn’t cope by turning my bedroom into Abu Ghraib, though.)
It’s the worst of both worlds. His father is far enough away to cause that gaping wound, yet not sufficiently gone for it to ever close over and heal.
But… despite his impossible situation, Riko wasn’t withdrawing into himself. Resentment ate away at him and he liked doing side-projects of revenge, but it was hope driving him on. I see Riko as someone with a very hot flame in them, someone determined to succeed (like Neil). He was driven, even if the goal he chased so eagerly was an illusion. I think he saw his situation as a challenge, an opportunity to prove himself and eventually take his rightful place at his father’s side (surely that’s what Kengo really meant, surely this was a test, a test he can pass if he just wins one more time...)
Imagine something like… the second son of a Roman emperor, sent to some far-off outpost to get him out of the way subdue rebel tribes. A chance to make a name for himself, an opportunity to create an elite unit where violence and skill are everything, where winning is everything. A challenge he accepts with savage excitement.
And the world views them with the kind of awe once reserved for ancient Sparta. Unsurpassed warriors, impossibly focussed. Yes, they endure conditions no one else could even consider but they always win, and everyone loves winners. They are the legends of legends. Surely his father will see.
Kevin was his Lancelot, his shining sword, his right hand. Kevin added to Riko’s status, assured him he must be a hero if he had such a splendid champion at his side.
But Kevin is beautiful, so perhaps Riko’s feelings were more complicated than that, perhaps they were feelings he couldn’t admit he had. He could still work those feelings into the overall picture though… it’s all part of Kevin being his beloved champion.
Until the champion started edging him out of his own story and had to be sacrificed. A necessary sacrifice, but losing Kevin struck a huge blow to the mythology Riko built up about himself. He could no longer look in the mirror, side by side, and see Kevin’s glory (and, yes, Kevin’s dad) reflected back as though it belonged to him too.
Despite this Riko finds a way to keep winning, even without his champion. Surely that is even more impressive? Can his father see that?
Still no response. In the story Riko constructs for himself his father does no wrong, so this towering rage he feels has to crash down on someone else. He tells himself he is punishing his troops for daring to be unworthy.
Then there is Jean, someone from a caste so low as to be unclean, even subnormal, someone it would hurt Riko’s prestige to treat with any kind of respect. But Jean is also beautiful, and those feelings can’t be worked into the myth. Their outlet is the darkness behind closed doors, along with all the other feelings that don’t fit the story of the hero.
Harming his people, his intimate possessions, was Riko’s coping mechanism for rejection and humiliation the way self-harm in many forms is to many others. (Are you hearing me if I say hurting yourself is hurting your own Perfect Court, and there is collateral damage even if you think it’s just you, because people love you and suffer because of it? Are you hearing me if I say stop being Riko to yourself?)
And maybe his enjoyment of that cruelty was, deep down, a form of denial that the cruelty arose from anguish. ‘No I’m not upset, I’m not a loser, I’m in control, I’m doing this because I like it…’ Maybe even to the point where rendition becomes sexual.
But it’s starting to unravel. He’s lost his only friend and can no longer unleash his mounting frustrations on Jean the way he wants to; he’s running out of pieces for his board.
Then he finds the fugitive his family were chasing for so long. This is his big chance. He’ll have a brand new champion for his stable or a valuable offering to please his father, he wins either way.
He captures this feral child who tells him there is no empty throne waiting by the side of the emperor, Kengo never mentions his son’s name, Riko is nothing more than a joke in that far-off capital. So much scorn in those words that the carefully constructed mythology withers before it.
First the would-be rook took the queen, then the wild-card knight escapes again, and now the whipping boy / concubine / bishop is taken by a girl with a cross around her neck. The king has lost all his men… because that’s your REAL story, isn’t it: everyone leaves you.
And then… Kengo dies.
Yes, Riko is a Bad Person. No, I do not like him. But Nora gave us two boys who met their brother for the first time, two boys who cried out their brother’s name only to see their hopes shattered. And in that moment they were one, so I cannot dismiss this monstrous, horrible abomination no matter how hard I try.
I can however dismiss anyone who says Nora is not a goddess of writing.

Benji has always been a bit different from the other Briars. There's no doubt he loves his family but money talks and his phone is always ringing.
prev / next
Benji: Go for Ben.
Ami: Guess who had a very amazing 6 month check up.
Benji: Obviously it’s our best girl-
Finn: Hi papa! S’ Finn!
Benji: Hey, buddy. Had a good day in school?
Finn: Uhhhh huh!
Ami: He was the line leader a 4th day in a row.
Benji: Line leader today, global powerhouse tomorrow, you know.
Ami: Are you sitting down?
Benji: Yess...?
Ami: So...don’t make a big fuss but, Mama and Baba invited us over for dinner.
Benji: Ami...
Finn: Yay!!!
Ami: You have to come this time, Ben. Baba is starting to get antsy.
Benji: Well Baba thinks Papa is a big stinky poopy head.
Finn: [giggles]
Ami: He does not. You know Baba. He’s...traditional. He doesn’t understand the vast complexity and nuances of the corporate world. He values family.
Benji: I value family! Our technology advances the modern family dynamic. Servos pick up the slack so parents can spend more time with their kids-
Ami: I know that, Ben but Baba is old school. He thinks you can work and play and you do too much work. It’s just dinner.
Ami: Tell papa, Finny.
Finn: Yeah, papa. S’dinner!
Ami: Your mother and father will be there. So no excuses.
Benji: [grumbles] ...yes, dear.
Ami: We love you. Dress casual. That means wear jeans. Bye-Bye.
Benji: [groans]
Secretary: Sir? You have a representative from the Landgraab Foundation on line 2 about the merger.
Benji: Take a message, please. I have dinner with my in laws.
Finn: Hellloo! Yooohooo!
Mama Ito: Oh, I am so glad you all were able to come for dinner. You all look like you’re hungry!
Elliot: Thank you for having us.
Benji: Oh yeah. Wouldn’t miss it for the world.
Baba Ito: Mhm. No big hot shot meeting to tend to, Mr. Hot Shot?
Ami: I thought you said you’d behave?
Baba Ito: What! I only make small talk. They don’t small talk in those big shiny offices?
Baba Ito: How was your trip back home, Willow?
Willow: Oh, it was lovely! I’ll take any chance I can get to see our family.
Baba Ito: So your mother makes time to visit family in the states, eh? When is the last time you seen your family, Benjamin?
Ami: Baba...
Benji: I mean...it’s been...some time...
Willow: I was just telling Benji that we’re invited to his Uncle Silas wedding this fall. Perfect time for the kids to meet the rest of the family.
Benji: And that does sound lovely, but the quarter ends at the beginning of fall. My schedule will only allow one trip, and that’s for Winterfest.
Baba Ito: Tuh! You think you have it so good, business man. Next thing you know, you’re an old man and time has passed you by. What then!
Elliot: Mr. Ito is right, beta. He has alot of wisdom we can all learn from.
Baba Ito: Heh. Yeah. Yeah! I am right, aren’t I?
Benji: My company can’t run itself, you know!
Finn’s Inner Monologue: I sure don’t know what the heck is going on here and I’m not sticking around to find out. See ya next episode!

Hello, I have a question, and probably a strange one. The short version: any tips on how do I and other writers should approach naming Lakota-based characters? Are there any good sources, that can be trusted?
The long version: so I'm making a story where one of characters comes from a nation based of Lakota. Since all main characters are dragon riders, I figured it wouldn't be odd for them to be one too. But I'm not sure how do I go about native people and dragons combination in terms of names. If I'm know what do I do with the rest of the crew but here I feel lost. There are not much sources online about Lakota naming convention avilable in my native language but I'm trying to do my best in what it comes about research. So recently I started digging in English. But not all online sourses seems to be relatable. So I decided I should better find a Lakota person and ask directly, regardless of how stupid I may look. Because one of the last things I want to do, is calling a character or their dragon "ten fighting bear asses" or something just as ridiculous (or, worse - offensive) by an accident.
Ok I’m gonna use this to talk about several things because time and time again I get asked this question over and over, and the out come is always the same, that there’s a deep rooted problem with how people write native people in fantasy. For one thing I’m not sure how you are even representing Lakota people in your story, and you are just going to call these characters Lakota names in English? Do they talk English? Then what does this nation of "Lakota inspired fantasy people" even look like? Are they backed dropped with elves and dwarfs? Why is it that not just Lakota but any native nation is a back drop for a fantasy world? Then there’s the fact that the Lakota tribes are made up of seven sub tribes and then itself is apart of a seven group tribe. You can’t just up root a REAL LIFE people and remove them from what makes them them. You aren’t the only one I have to talk about this with and I end up getting ghosted by the people asking for help because they end up realizing they can’t actually write this weird Frankenstein story of native people. It’s a lot more nuanced to writing about native people and it takes collaboration with people to make a genuine story. Idk if people disconnect us from our land and people just haven’t realized WE ARE NORTH AMERICA, SOUTH AMERICA, you just can’t take us away from our history, what we are apart of and then if you are including one tribe where’s the rest of them? I wanna bring up Xiran Jay Zhao videos because I really think it brings up this whole issue with nitpicking cultures and misrepresenting them. No hard feelings or anything but so many authors come to me for advice and their whole stories and works just crumble and fall apart because they just don’t understand and can’t, you’ll never have a native person perspective. I honestly think instead of forcing it and writing from bull shit you don’t know is a reliable source then maybe you should step back and learn about native people, support their writings, and enjoy their work and authenticity./gen
Here’s a great book focusing on dragon riders, completely from a Wampanoag perspective written by Wampanoag author.
I am so glad you have an interest in our culture and I have no hard feelings about misunderstandings./pos

DRDT spoilers below the cut.
So I’ve heard some people have complaints about the new episode? In the interest of starting shit let’s talk about it.
To give the devil his dues, there is a moment in the chapter I find shaky. No one seeing Ace grabbing the tape is the only thing that gave me pause (frankly though it’s more realistic than the actual danganronpa games sometimes). I’m willing to deal with it, but if that’s a big sticking point for you then I’m not gonna say it’s wrong. If this is something that broke your immersion I’m not gonna blame you.
Let’s talk about some of the common complaints I’ve seen.
1. Ace’s character had so much potential! Him dying now is bad writing.
Wrong. False. Incorrect. Killing off a character with potential is not a inherently bad writing. Arei, Min, and Xander all had fuck tons of potential. I don’t see y’all trashing that shit. It’s part of danganronpa. Dev needs to make sure you won’t call their bluff, so they need to mix more disposable characters with interesting characters and switch up who gets knifed. All good fangans do this. Secondly, an inherent part of the tragedy of danganronpa is how much life these people had left to live. Them dying with potential is like… kinda the point. I’m starting to realize some of you forgot what you’re watching.
2. Him being the killer doesn’t fit the themes of the chapter!
This is silly to me. The theme of the chapter is people not being who they say/you think they are. All that glitters and all that. Ace has been viewed as a paper tiger for this entire series. Someone who would make threats and then back out when it got serious. He was assumed to be someone who’d step to someone who’d actually kill him and become a victim, by both the fandom and cast. For him to not just be a killer, but murder in a way that required planning, stealth, and a level of sophistication is very unlike what he thought of him. This is textbook theming that fits the chapter. Y’all just mad because you were tripping out about people “being a good person”. (Side note: I’ve seen people be frustrated with J for calling Ace too stupid for this plan, but she’s essentially making the same argument I am. Just in worse words. She was bringing up the fact that this entire plan goes against Ace’s perceived nature.)
3. Everyone feels so sympathetic for Ace but is so harsh towards Nico!
I actually agree with like… 40% of this argument. I think the harshness towards Nico is very justified and I’m kinda disgruntled seeing people pass the buck on Ace’s actions. This is because the emotions are still fresh, more nuanced conversation will come in time. It’s also because while their motives were both very human, Ace’s is more relatable for a majority of people. Nico tried to kill out of anger, they tried to kill because Ace was upsetting them greatly and they wanted that to go away, they tried to kill because they were reminded of people who hurt them and wanted a form of justice. These are all very understandable and human. Ace killed because he thought he would be next, because he was afraid of everyone around him and he thought they all had it out for him, he killed because he was afraid. Are you seeing the difference? Nico attempted to kill a specific person because they hated him. Nico wanted a form of revenge and to dole out a punishment. If that got them out of the killing game, wonderful. Ace killed very specifically because he thought he would be next, he didn’t want someone to murder him so he murdered to try and get out first. In this was, Nico’s attempted murder is framed as very aggressive and Ace’s murder of Arei is framed as very defensive. All of this to say, murder is wrong. It’s obvious why people are feeling more connection to Ace’s motive, but he still killed one person and wanted to kill a bunch of others. These actions aren’t defensible. His actions are his own, and while outside factors pushed him in a direction, you always have a choice. He made the choice to kill, and that’s on him.
4. No scrum debate! He isn’t the killer!
That’s unlikely. That lack of a scrum debate can be better explained by like… a bunch of different things. Dev themselves said that they have more responsibilities now. It’s very likely they realized the scrum debate wasn’t necessary and decided to kill a darling to make things easier on themselves. Maybe a scrum debate just didn’t fit in the chapter. Maybe there’s a deeper meaning. Maybe it’s supposed to represent how much everyone kinda ganged up on Ace until he broke, how he had no one to consistently defend him. There’s plenty of more reasonable explanations besides a crazy last minute plot twist. …That is also not entirely off the table though.
5. Teruko was so hypocritical for ganging up on him like everyone else ganged up on her during chapter 1!
Yes, she’s a little bit of a hypocrite for not hearing his side better. This is a fact. This is also a character flaw. Crazy to think someone jaded and disillusioned with the world would act like a hypocritical jackass sometimes, eh?
—
I would like to stress that 99% of the people are being fine and reasonable and you’re all great. However, there’s 1% of people whose arguments just aren’t good. I wanted to talk about that. Feel free to make some new arguments, or respond to my points. I’d love to chat.

Knock Knock Boys Ep 8 Stray Thoughts
Last time, Latte took Almond to the beach so he could relax and unwind. While there, he tried to teach Almond how to pick up strangers, but got concerned when Almond intentionally got drunk too fast. He pulled Almond out of that situation and took him back to their room where they kissed for the first time in a scene full of complex emotional layers. Latte stopped them before it went too far, and later shared his own family beach trip trauma. Meanwhile, Thanwa is back with Max and has decided to move back in with him. Peak waited too long, and so Thanwa is choosing to make pragmatic choices in his life to accept a job he doesn’t like and be with a man who isn’t great to him because he’s wealthy.
Trigger warning for 35:00 to 35:30 for attempted sexual assault.
Ew, is MAX the one who is uploading the clips??
I do love the commitment to using Almond waking up Latte as a framing device for the state of the house.
Oh, Peak, you tried.
What in the Princess Leia is this towel arrangement on his head?
These boys are crumbling so fast without Thanwa feeding them.
Okay, I feel better. Thanwa only intends to stay with Max briefly and is not giving him any suckface.
I’m really glad they got Pak for this role. He put a lot of power into that reconciliation scene with Almond and Latte. I like that they’re letting Almond have both desires: Yes he wants to prove his innocence, and yes he wants to help his friend. These are not at cross purposes.
Thank you, Lukpeach. We gotta actually solve the problem.
Gays, let’s please get it together. Y’all are making me feel awkward and I’m not even at this restaurant.
Peak, I understand you, and I am also so frustrated with you.
There’s something so perfect from the costuming of Thanwa in these clothes. They aren’t sitting correctly on him. He looks uncomfortable.
THIS LOOKING BACK AND MISSING EACH OTHER IS DRIVING ME INSANE.
I am in my 30s and spent my 20s either hustling or working in small businesses. There’s way too much chatter in the discourse about red and green flag human beings that strips them of nuance and personality. Let’s talk about a real red flag from a fucking job: Thanwa has told these food reviewer people that he can’t afford to do this little side gig for them, and then they call him out of the blue trying to pressure him into a 3 month probation for a 6 month job, and he must accept today because they’re the ones in a bind? HELL THE FUCK NO. DO NOT WORK FOR THOSE PEOPLE.
I’m glad Peak called Sean. He’s knows he’s the reliable one in this group.
I see you, Lukpeach. She is reaping! She invested early and it is paying off!
Thanwa is in his 20s. Now is the time for him to take these kinds of risks. I hope this works out for him, but keep your eyes open,
Latte has excellent taste in men. I love how every person we’ve seen Latte reconnect with, they all seem to have enjoyed their time with him and are happy to see him again.
Max, if I see you on the streets it’s on sight.
Goddamn, he’s trying to film Thanwa, too. I’m sick of this man.
Kick his ass, Jumper!!
That’s right, Sean, make sure you get your licks in, too!
Oh, what a messy final scene! Thanwa is totally fine to feel hurt about being accused here, but I also don’t think that Peak is off-base to think that Thanwa is trying to protect Max. He doesn’t know what has happened between them because neither of them has shared the important things.
This show continues to hold together! I’m so relieved. Curious where they go next, and if Max just disappears or manages to use his wealth to circumvent trouble. Also worried about potential video of Thanwa also becoming public and causing problems for him in this new role he just took.

Hey, I'm the previous anon! And I really love your meta long essay commentaries, so please do not feel as if I didn't ask for it! I kind of did. If I'm going to be honest, I absolutely love long essays about Bruce and Dick, and you have some of the greatest analysis of them if I have to say! So, thank you very much for the long response!💙 Also, I completely agree, I always felt that if Alfred was truly the closest to Bruce, then, how come it wasn't until Dick came along, did things get better? Like you can be close to someone, of course, and it might not always do much, but they seemed distant. That's why I couldn't really get under the agreement that Alfred was the closest to Bruce especially if you compare him to Dick who is usually the one who when it comes to the worst situation is the one that is needed to come back to get Bruce out of his darkness that he is put in. I remember a specific panel of when Damien died, and Bruce was locked into this machine to replay any plausible scenario where Damien could've been saved, and no one could get him out of it until Alfred brought Dick to confront Bruce over this. Bruce even said to Alfred, "This calling in the calvary routine is getting old, Alfred." And rather than talking sense into Bruce like Alfred thought Dick would do, Dick instead joined Bruce knowing full well that this is the only way to get Bruce out of this is to prove him wrong and allow him to realize that all he is doing is avoiding the reality of his loss. So, cases like that really emphasize that it really is Dick who understands Bruce the most, I feel. Not to mention like you said that the relationship between Bruce and Alfred starts off as a very professional one, and as much as they do know they care about each other, it doesn't change the fact that at its core it still very much is hinged on that professional relationship. Alfred, as others have said before, is very much an enabler. He may at times disagree with Bruce's choices, but he will never truly fight Bruce out on it. He will not fight like an equal to Bruce, but always like a servant unlike with Dick, who does not hesitate to call Bruce out and has made it a point that he wants to be Bruce's equal. Once again, thank you for your long reasoning, I really appreciate it and adore these truly! I am also thankful for the quotes from Scott Snyder, and now I finally know where the line of Dick's relationship with Bruce being both pathological and endearing came from! But seriously, how is it Scott Snyder who always seems to understand the closeness of the relationship that is between Bruce and Dick. All his quotes on them that I have seen so far always hits it right on!
I’m so glad you enjoy them!! I’m always like “surely I could be more concise” but I’m always happy to ramble if people let me!
(Speaking of rambing… I’m going to cut again to talk about the rest of this. 😆)
I totally agree with you. There’s been more interpretations lately (in some instances of canon as well) of Alfred having a paternal relationship to Bruce from the outset, and Dick considering Alfred more of a grandfather because of that. While I do think Bruce can come to see Alfred as a father over time, I personally think it’s Bruce’s evolving relationship with Dick (and what he sees of Alfred’s evolving relationship with Dick) that helps him contextualize his own relationship with Alfred. Flattening and simplifying everything to fit nuclear family roles may make things “easier” for people to understand, but it removes so much nuance and frankly does a disservice to the characters.
Even in that issue you’re talking about, where Bruce is grieving Damian, he acknowledges Alfred’s grief by acknowledging him as another parent to Damian, not a grandparent. Their relationships just aren’t and have never been that simple.
Batman and Robin (2011) #23
Also pulled out those panels you mentioned because yes!!
It’s more butler stuff rearing its head. I think Alfred and Bruce got stuck in a relationship pattern early on where Alfred knows he’s not and doesn’t want to be Bruce’s father, so he can only go so far in trying to tell Bruce what to do. And it’s a little late to change that when Bruce becomes an adult. So all Alfred can really do is voice his disagreement and then either put up with Bruce not listening to him, leave (like he does when he quits during KnightQuest), or try to call in someone who he thinks Bruce will actually listen to (Dick, though obviously Alfred can’t control Dick either. Hell, even Bruce can’t control Dick.).
Alfred may have learned to support what they do over the years (because he certainly didn’t at first), but he intentionally positions himself as a supporter rather than a peer.
Batman #689
That’s why even in a Bruce & Alfred story where Alfred actually is able to save Bruce by himself, his instinct is still “something is wrong with Bruce -> call Dick immediately”.
Batman: The Brave and the Bold (2023) #18
It’s a self-imposed relationship pattern. Alfred cares for Bruce and will be there for him, but he’s never actually trying to be the person closest to Bruce, and he’s happy to hand that role and related responsibilities off to someone else that he trusts is good for Bruce (like Dick, even when Dick’s no longer living in the Manor). Whereas that was what Dick actively wanted from the start—to be Bruce and Batman’s partner and close confidante in all things. So, in a sense, it’s only natural their relationships have taken these shapes.
I think Snyder understands Bruce and Dick really well! I was disappointed he doesn’t seem to have figured out how Dick fits into his Absolute Batman universe yet, but he’s already given us a very different spin on Bruce and Alfred, so I’m really interested in seeing how he’s going to approach Dick. Hopefully we won’t have to wait long for it! 🤞

Thoughts of an aroace shipper and selfshipper:
[Putting this here on this blog as it mentions self shipping.]
As someone who’s aroace but also comfortable with attraction when it comes to fiction, I honestly feel confused about the whole shipping discourse when it comes to any aroace character that’s on the spectrum. Because, personally, as an aroace, I don’t mind people shipping aroace characters for fun, as long as they’re respectful of their canon identity. Plus, when it comes to fan creations and such, it’s not canon in the first place. At the same time, I understand the frustration with people who don’t want aroace characters to be shipped and feel like it’s erasing aroace spectrum rep. When it comes to the whole “erasing rep” part, it gets muddy and complicated when you’re referring to the whole spectrum.
Although, I do have one thing I’d like to discuss about the whole representation part. When it comes to fandom, people ignore all types of identities and ship what they want. Again, I’m only cool with it as long as the individual isn’t acting like it’s canon canon. That and it’s up to the creator and what they feel comfortable with. If they don’t want their character to be shipped, cool. If they don’t mind their character being shipped, cool.
Then things get a bit more nuanced and somewhat “confusing.” At the same time, shipping characters can help someone figure their own identity. I would’ve never understand that I experience queerplatonic attraction if it weren’t for shipping. I often (unintentionally) put myself in stereotypical black and white boxes. I mean, I thought I wasn’t aroace because of the one and only time I did feel attraction. Later on, I realized my aroace identity is very complicated but I know for a fact that I’m pretty “far down” the end of the spectrum.
Also, specifically, when it comes to OC x canon ships and self inserts of the sort…personally, do whatever you want. It’s for you right? And you just want to have fun. I repeat, as long as you aren’t acting like your ships are canon and recognize the character’s actual identity, I personally think it’s fine.
While these may be my personal beliefs, I also understand the lack of representation. But again, I feel like most aroace representation is lacking no matter what part of the spectrum you’re on. That and while people are going to do what they want anyways on the internet, at the same time, people also need to be respectful of other people’s characters that they don’t own.
Then you have people who can be aroace and fictsexual. Again, if the creator of a character is comfortable with their character being shipped and the person who’s shipping that character acknowledges the character’s canon identity, I think it’s fine for fictiosexuals to do what they want.
Again, this is my personal opinion and I obviously don’t speak for everyone on the aroace spectrum. I just wanted to talk about this and explore this topic.
Anyways, this isn’t as important but I’ll put my further two cents here.
Take me for example. I selfship with Alastor in 2 ways. When it comes to my OC, canonically my OC is aroace as well, and in a QPR. But I also put Alastor in the romantic category. Why? Because I also enjoy writing my oc in romantic situations and I’m lowkey poking fun at myself. It’s for me and it’s purely because I find it fun and well, funny at the same time. Also, I put a tag for it if anyone doesn’t want to deal with seeing that stuff.
Further more, despite my own confusion when it comes to identifying any emotion I feel (I’m sure neurodivergency has a role in that), I also like exploring a range of emotions in what I create because it’s all fictional. It’s not real.
Furthermore, after finding out about what a QPR is, I finally had the words to correctly convey and label my self ships into.
Overall, it also can be cathartic. What if someone is cupioromantic and one way they cope is with shipping/selfshipping? Besides the self shipping, fans like to project parts of themselves onto characters. (I repeat, the ones who are just having fun but also are respectful) I’ve also seen non-aroace people wanting to explore how to write aroace identities as well. As long as they do the research and are respectful, go ahead! If you’re writing an aroace character for the first time, you’re not going to be perfect and that’s okay. Now, obviously, I’m not saying it’s okay to write harmful stereotypes of aroace people.
Shipping can be useful in exposing new identities that some people may not know have/have enough knowledge on. It can also broaden one’s perspective as some people may not understand that being aroace is a spectrum, can fluctuate, and isn’t all black and white.
But yeah. I’d like to hear your thoughts on the matter.
This ain’t for you proshippers.

[My Opinion on Yandere Tropes]
I’m putting up a disclaimer so no one can misunderstand my words. I am not dissing anyone who writes Yandere tropes like how I present nor do I think of them any less when portraying canon characters this way. If anything, I find this concept interesting and believe some improvements can make said stories fascinating and less predictable with the trope used. ALSO! Just because I read some Yandere fics, does not mean that I agree or condone any of the actions written in these narratives. Thank you for understanding.
Now for opinion time!
After reading my fair share of Yandere fanfiction, I’ve always found most actions done by the characters inside of these stories becoming either extremely predictable or doing something out of left field to the point where they act like a different character entirely.
Yes, some may contest that this archetype can change how a character acts. Sure, that is the case but that doesn’t mean that their personality and characteristics should be put on hold. They’re still human no matter if they’re sickly in love or not.
Some writings don’t have any nuance with the Yandere trope and just go the simple route with it. Adding depth and context to Yandere’s mindset can bring out your work for the better! Think about how the characters would act in a situation where they’re sickly in love with someone instead of using cliché lines and scenes.
Make them have some self-doubt in their actions to add some interest to your writings. Make it believable and thought-provoking when talking about the psyche of the “Yandere” in question.
And one character I’ve seen done a little bit dirty is a certain hunter with the Nicki Minaj Bob.
YES, I DID SEGWAY THIS SO I CAN TALK ABOUT MY VIEWS ON YANDERE! ROOK WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO!? NOTHING EXACTLY! Anyways…
I’ve only seen a few Yandere Rook fics but the ones that I have viewed just left me kind of baffled. Most of them involve hurting the person he’s interested in or putting them in dangerous situations while also trying to make it suggestive. Again no dissing anyone who writes him like this! But I am going to take this time to write down my opinion on Yandere Rook while also keeping parts of his personality. Because Rook has such good potential for a great Yandere fic and it’s kind of sad to see writers miss such an opportunity with him.
My View of Yandere Rook
If Rook was a Yandere, he definitely wouldn’t hurt the person he’s after. He sees the person as a beauty worth persevering only for his sight and benefit. Hurting his love would be like destroying the one thing he’s been desperate to seek his whole life.
Contrary to popular belief, I don’t think Rook would go after people who simply talk to his partner. Sure he’ll be a little antsy at times when people get too friendly with the partner in question. But, all he would do is just stare them down after they leave. And to combat this he’d take his partner to places around the college. Rambling about his love for them, serenading them or just giving them affection. He does anything he can to make sure that the person he’s in love with only focuses on him and the scenery around them.
But if someone DOES try to pursue his lover. Then he’s going to have a problem. He’ll go up to them as casually as possible trying to strike up a “nice” conversation.
Potential Dialogue and Use of Tactics Rook uses
“Say I’ve been hearing from the grapevine that you’re in pursuit of the lovely trickster. Is that so?” He says this knowing the answer already.
Becoming even more dramatic saying:
“I’m so sorry to tell you this, but they’re currently in a relationship. It would be a pity if their partner were to hear about this…they aren’t very forgiving when it comes to their love.”
He does it to scare them at first. But if they aren’t persuaded he drops the act entirely. “I tried to warn you. Tête de noeud…you just wouldn’t listen would you? Still trying to go after my love even after knowing they were together with me. Do you seriously think they would be with you? What a horrible joke…they would never fall for a fool like you. If you value your life please do the smart option and leave them out of that small dense brain do yours.”
“Oh my! My temper was far too wild! Please accept my humble apology. I’m sure you won’t make the same mistake twice…right?” And then leave them to their devices.
In simple words instead of killing off or injuring people, Rook strikes fear into their hearts to ensure they don’t come near his lover. He isn’t an outright killer but he’s great at making people think that he might kill them. Only using empty threats to get the job done. Keeping them on their feet and letting them overthink whatever might happen to them. Making them crumble under their fear.
Conclusion
The moral of this long opinion piece is that Yandere tropes can be used to make eye-opening fan works. Doesn’t matter which fandom you’re in, TWST or not!
It’s up to you whether or not you decide to add nuance to said fanfiction. That’s all I wanted to say! Thank you for reading all the way through. I hope my points were understandable.
ANOTHER THING! I’m not saying that I’m a better writer! Trust me I have a long way to go. I just wanted to talk about what I’ve been noticing lately in this genre and give people ideas for their possible fics. That’s it. Now I’m done.🫶
#you are fully allowed to disagree with this#because at the end of the day it’s just an opinion of mine#twisted wonderland#rook hunt#yandere#yandere trope#yandere rook hunt#yandere rook x reader#viper’s thoughts

The silver lining to all the fandom bullshit, for me, is that I came out of 4x03 loving both TK and Carlos a whole helluva lot more than I ever have... and also seeing the ways, across 4x01 to 4x03, that they love so fiercely - both each other and others - with their whole fucking hearts... and knowing that loving that hard, that intensely, means that it’s never perfect because it’s so easy for emotions to make things messy and complicated when it consumes you like that... but I’ve always said that I could go through any angst with these two as long as the love is still there... and oh boy is it still there.
I just really fucking love them both, warts and all.
[More under the cut because I have too many thoughts:]
I've analyzed both of their behaviors and I fully get them and appreciate them. I think what it boils down to is that they just have different priorities in 4x03 that aren't fully working in tandem at the moment and it's causing some tension... but it's actually really good tension because what couple has the same exact priorities every damn moment of their lives?? What are they, clones??
And if I'm thinking of only TK's emotions then I'm upset by Carlos's distance for sure... but I also think TK is a lot more than just upset. He's also feeling guilty (and he was before Carlos even knew about the visit, so that guilt was all his, Carlos did not put that on him initially) and concerned for Carlos because he's seeing Carlos behave erratically and that's new for him. Like, TK sees this change in Carlos and he is scared of it because he knows how far Carlos is willing to go for the people he loves, he’s seen Carlos do that for him before. He knows. So, I am reading TK's reactions as a lot more nuanced than just sad/upset - the man is feeling a lot... GIVE HIM A HUG PLEASE AND THANK YOU.
And as far as Carlos... our tragic, compartmentalizing Carlos... when Iris goes missing he pushes so much down just to focus on her - on finding her, on protecting her, on supporting her. He and TK have one argument and he does his best to not lash out... he buries it and shifts his focus. Full-on focus on finding Iris, finding answers. He gets right to work, he’s in detective/cop mode, just like Ronen said. And we know he has his own guilt driving him towards that, especially since he thinks that maybe coming back into her life like this, with the divorce and with TK, has fucked up her stability. He remains super focused on the s*x doll call because when he comes into the call it is literally in response to the missing person alert - unlike the 126, this call is tied to Iris from minute one for him... and then when he has Iris back he's still just focused on her because she is not doing well. But he's not ignoring TK completely this entire episode as I've seen so many people claim... he literally calls TK to give an update about Iris... he's concerned about Iris and he chooses to talk to TK about it... about whether or not he can believe her like he wants to when all the evidence says he shouldn't. It's the trusting his gut thing all over again... but this time it's trusting his gut to trust Iris... but he still calls TK to talk through that. And it’s not so that he can further blame TK for it either - that blame and guilt is still very much coming from TK himself, and if Carlos is doing anything wrong here it’s that he’s not reassuring TK that he’s blameless... and, like, I get that? Because Carlos also isn’t feeling blameless so maybe he’s thinking it’s both of their faults, that they did this to her. (Not correct, not rational, but understandable, at least to me.)
And then the final call that he makes... I love that the scene starts with his attention on the house... he clearly wants to go right in and get to work... but he pauses and calls TK... and sure he lies to him but that's because he's doing something he knows he shouldn't and he doesn't want to be convinced not to... which is understandable, too, I think. He would’ve lied to anyone in that moment. But he also doesn't want TK to worry when he doesn't come home so he calls and at least gives him a little bit of relief... and yes it's a lie but like... we knew Carlos was gonna be irrational this episode... he doesn't ALWAYS do the right thing. So it's a lie but it at least it gives him time to do what he wants to do AND it - in his mind, though he is wrong - will help settle TK worries.
I don't know... I'm just not mad about all of this. I actually think 4x03 was an incredibly strong episode (the Carlos plot only though). I mean those scenes with Iris... y'all I'm still losing my mind over them. Their friendship is so beautiful and you can clearly see how they were each other’s whole world at one point in time. I love seeing a Carlos that breaks the rules and does the wrong thing because my god I don't know a single person who doesn't fuck up every once in awhile... but he does it out of LOVE, he does it out of his NEED to help, to protect, to be there for the people he loves. Like, how the fuck am I supposed to hate him for that? (Spoiler alert: I’m not gonna and you can’t make me.)
I think if you’re THAT mad at Carlos, it’s because you’re not even trying to understand him in all of this... you’re seeing the POV that the show is giving us (which for the Tarlos of all of this is clearly TK, that’s why we got the talk with Tommy) and you’re not even trying to analyze the rest of the story. And, like, I’m not here to tell you you have to, but I think you’d find this a lot more enjoyable if you at least tried to see where all the characters are coming from. And you might still be frustrated with Carlos - he’s frustrating, hallelujah! - but you’d also realize he’s not the fucking devil. He’s just an imperfect man with a too-big heart stuck between a rock (tunnel) and a hard place (a shovel). And I’m so excited to see the LOVE that he and TK have for each other SAVE him (and them). IT’S. STILL. ALL. ABOUT. THEIR. LOVE.
Anyway... bring on 4x04, I’m so fucking READY.
#whoops... my brain wouldn't shut up#ls spoilers#ls speculation#tarlos#911 lone star#I want TK to have all the hugs#I want Carlos to have all the hugs#I want Iris to have all the hugs#I want someone to hug Andrea when she finds out her son is missing#Y'ALL GIVE EVERYONE HUGS THEY'RE GOING THROUGH HELL RIGHT NOW

why do people take paul’s grief for john as something romantic? like people like to overanalyze his quotes about his death and i’m not denying he expressed and said some weird things but like let’s be honest, this isn’t something unique to paul. many people have a hard time expressing themselves after someone close to them has died and that can last years, it’s just that for the majority of us, there isn’t a microphone or tape recorder taking down every thought you had on the matter and publishing it. You aren’t being asked about it like it’s just another everyday question about your life. especially considering these two never had a chance to truly work out their differences, like obviously you’re going to have mixed emotions, your relationship was being pitted against each other by media for years. you have people pretending they know more about your friendship than the actual two people who were in the room together. like i can’t imagine that happening to me and my best friend, heck im sure that would drive me crazy. that’s why i appreciate your views. you understand nuance.
:(
Yeah.
I also think… Like yes I do think sometimes Paul goes over the top with the way he talks about John.
But then I remember how Paul accidentally said something terrible the day he found out and was viciously raked over the coals for it. And I remember he'd by that point already lived with the guilt of "saying the wrong thing after someone died suddenly" since he was fourteen, and here he had done the same thing again.
And I also think about the fact that, before I became a fan, I did have a vague notion of the Beatles as people and… I was 100% one of those people who assumed Lennon-McCartney was a cold and opportunistic business-relationship, not a real friendship. That was the narrative instilled in my brain before I'd even given any of this any thought! And that's the very thing Paul struggled to dismantle for decades, and maybe finally sort of managed with Get Back/Now and Then!* And I remember how he lives with the pain of feeling he didn't make his love for John known enough during John's lifetime, and suspect some of this might be a kind of atonement.
And yeah, everything you mentioned. These things are hard for everyone to go through, but not everyone gets recorded every step of the rocky way.
*We can talk about the specific accuracy of this new over-simplified "JohnandPaul Were Simply Besties :)" story – but the general public is never gonna settle for a nuanced narrative, and it's natural this is the one Paul prefers.

you REALLY think jk was awkward in hugging tae because he was conscious of medias like dispatch paying extra attention to them and writing articles? you think a media outlet like dispatch wouldn't b paid extra money to shut up about a potential queer couple in a highly sensitive time like enlistment? you think they're just running free waiting for taekook to interact to pounce on them and write articles that would put them under a spotlight and potentially endanger them if they weren't careful? LMAOOO just sounds stupid as fuck i'm sorry. whatever jk's reason was for that awkward hug i can bet a decent amount of money it wasn't because he wary of dispatch
Hi anon!
It always amazes me when anon’s like you seem to be unable to voice your thoughts in a normal non-aggressive way. Coming at me in this tone makes me believe you aren’t actually interested in my clarification, but rather that you are more interested in ridiculing me.
I truly had to search through all my posts from yesterday, because the way you describe my thoughts did not correspond with my actual thoughts on the matter. I understand I can be vague at times, or that my nuances might be lost on some.. this fandom does have a tendency to only talk about the extremes. But, i found what you are referring to. Had you read correctly, you will find that my answer was about there being several different factors at play that possibly causes Jk’s state of mind. What I ended that post with is that we shouldn’t cone to any conclusions, because some other footage may drop which made us reconsider our initial idea about a situation.
After that post more information did come out, which did change my initial thoughts on the matter. I/we learned that that hug wasn’t them seeing each other for the first time that day. It wasn’t their initial interaction. I also started to pay more attention to Jk’s facial expression, which was a smiley one (crinkled eyes). So right now I do not believe he was uncomfortable during that hug . I think he reached out for Tae who did not notice him at, Jk started his high school welcoming Jin but his arm/hand went towards Tae, Tae held his hand throughout the Jinkook hug after which he said something to Jk which possibly was about them hugging (again?) too, this ended up in the hug. Sure the hug was sidewards, but they were both laughing during it. I don’t think it was as awkward as people make it out.
I believe Jk and Tae always have to think about the way they interact in public. Not only does that come with being an idol in general (I think all members are probably way more informal when they are amongst each other), but it also comes from being closeted. In this case though I think Jk’s main discomfort comes from being enlisted. He’s not shared an image of himself once since enlisting. I might be wrong about this ofcourse, but that is what it looks like to me at this point.
My thoughts about things might change when more information comes out anon. You could’ve just ask me in a normal way about whatever it is I’m thinking.

Y’know, there’s one thing I don’t get about Arkham Rids. And it’s the whole bit about him being aro or ace or both. Lots of people say he’s aro/ace because ‘the base nature of (Catwoman’s attachment to Batman) disgusts’ him. And that’s fine. Honestly, I’m disgusted by it too sometimes. And so are some people who aren’t into BatCat in general. The thing that gets me is that people use this one line as evidence or something, and then leave no room for discussion, which I think is a bit stubborn. Yes, their overtly sexual relationship grossed me out too. Yes, I myself am arospec and aspec. But that’s the thing, it’s a spectrum. So while I understand that people get frustrated that he may very well be one of the few characters in media who is aro/ace, people have to understand that 1. It’s a spectrum. Attraction is a very complicated thing. 2. One line, does not a confirmed aro/ace make. And 3. I’m sure lots of allo peeps can be disgusted by a ‘base nature attachment’ as well. Lots of people, regardless of orientation don’t like hearing about what I can only assume Riddler interprets as an extremely sexual relationship that somehow breeded feelings. Which, to me at least, sound more like a demisexual sentiment that a flat out asexual one. It’s fine either way in my opinion. It’s just frustrating to me how some people aren’t open for discussion or nuance. Especially when I myself fall into said nuance.
hello lil beloved! i am not qualified in the slightest to discuss aro/ace spectrum stuff because i am a monogamous slut who loves romantic things
but as for the eddie, i think it's probably coming from two places:
wally wingert said in a cameo i saw once that he can't see the riddler flirting, he doesn't see him being romantic or anything like that. i think he might also have mentioned it in a behind the scenes interview or something? that plus i guess some people think that if he had a woman captive and didn't shoot his shot, then he's not into that? but that's a stretch and a little bit weird lmao
here's the thing though, there's so much eddie does say and doesn't say, and it's all down to how you interpret a character or their tone. some people go MAD for arkham!verse riddlecat, they see sexual tension between them and the way they talk. some people see eddie as canonically bisexual because he's depicted as such in other canon sources. some people see him being repulsed by catwoman or batman or sex in general. which brings me to the second point:
canon doesn't matter a tiny bit when people have their favourites. you can do what you want, you can think what you want. i headcanon arkham!eddie as bisexual, monogamous and autistic, because i can. and because the source material doesn't say that he isn't. and even if it did, it wouldn't stop me lmao which i think is where the big thing with eddie (and a lot of riddlers actually!) comes from. there's that little bit of a suggestion, a lil bit of hope and like you said, people cling to it, because the representation isn't anywhere else for them!
but ultimately people can do whatever they want for whatever reason forever and ever 💚 i know it's maybe annoying when some people won't hear you out about it, but also, they don't have to. which sucks for you, but they're entitled to be stubborn bub!
all that matters is that he's fictional and that people can do what they want with him u-u 💚
#i am so sorry if i was rubbiish at answering this i am not the person to debate canon because i am silly#i dont even stick to my own headcanons#i've called that fucker ace and then written a million bajillion fics about him desperately wanting his hole constantly lmao#sometimes my headcanons get in the fuckin WAY#i don't think he's like 100% into sex that much like i don't think it crosses his mind#and for my own self-insert and daydreams that is a fuckin NIGHTMARE to deal with lmao#it's why i added captain boomerang into the mix lmaooooooo#friends being friends#anon

Can Deities read every thought we have? It occurred to me that the Deity I’ve been praying to could probably hear what I’m thinking and since then I swear the worst shit pops into my head. I mean I don’t flatter myself They’re always paying attention, but if I was already feeling Their presence, or if the nasty thought was about Them, i feel like it could attract their attention. I apologize and try to explain when it’s just a random thought that formed because my brain likes to generate the worst things it can, but I feel like that’s a shitty excuse
I am not entirely sure how much the Gods hear from us but I do know that They don’t take precedent of our thoughts unless They are mentioned. It is my understanding that, unless you are within the range of proximity to Them, They likely cannot get more details than the general overview of information from your life.
There’s blindspots - like perhaps They know what is going on in your life, but They don’t have any context for it unless They were physically manifesting around you in various ways and that typically still warrants blindspots because They don’t know everything about us all of the time.
Even if They did, if They were worth Their weight, They wouldn’t care to be listening to your thoughts all day everyday unless you specifically talked to Them and invoked Them by saying Their name. Otherwise, it’s likely They aren’t paying that close attention to you unless, as I said, They are physically present in a way that They are manifesting within you or another person through possessory work or anything akin to channeling and etc. and I don’t believe most people have that capacity much less have it every waking hour of their life unless there is already an agreement in place. And those agreements come with lengthy conversations about boundaries and expectations.
Regardless, They don’t really care for you speaking insults about Them. I don’t think They are standing over you with a clip board, marking off each and every concern or thought you have. They are not the Christian God and do not police those sorts of things and there is no punishment for thinking less than savory thoughts about your Deity.
If it’s any consolation, I have hurled curses and insults at Loki because He does awful things sometimes and I don’t understand them until after it’s already passed. But yet, we’re married and we have a pretty solid relationship. He respects my privacy even though we work very intensely together and even though I do possessory work with Him, He doesn’t pick apart my brain and analyze my thoughts. That would be paranoia and also anxiety that is unwarranted. Regardless, He has earned my trust that even if He does pick up on something less than savory about Him, He knows that it wouldn’t be okay to discuss until I am ready.
Also something to be aware of is that They don’t always have an issue with certain things. They aren’t listening all the time and They don’t concern Themselves with small stuff that doesn’t determine anything beyond intruding thoughts. If you’re angry, annoyed, or upset at your Deity, it doesn’t bother Them and it can also be helpful in considering how to move forward in your relationship with Them. It’s better to communicate your issues flat out to Them intentionally than to assume They know what you’re talking about. They don’t know everything. They know pieces of information we don’t always have available, but the nuances are very fragmented is my understanding.
I hope that makes sense anon. Probably way more information as always but I hope you have a better understanding now.

What do u think about those that extremely venerates Sasuke but hates Naruto the character for being a Konoha bootlicker? Is Naruto really a bootlicker like Itachi or Kakashi? Why can't they learn to understand Naruto like they do with Sasuke? They can like both at the same time
hmmm i think you’re new to my blog, i’ve talked about this so much already, but it’s fair that you can’t find it that easily since the posts aren’t that specifically tagged. i don’t think those people can even understand sasuke’s character when they come with those claims, like how “sasuke would be much better without naruto” or stuff like it, and they surely can’t understand naruto either, or aren’t willing to for their own personal bias. sasuke is someone that challenges the status quo, true, but it comes to a point that those people only care about their own political projections onto his character. sure, they can talk about how much he loved his family, but they don’t get that sasuke is a character defined by love, and not only the love he feels for his family, but also for naruto, something they can’t accept, they will say that’s retconned, even though it’s obviously not, or that naruto is bad for sasuke, even though we clearly see that sasuke is happier. with naruto, is happier when he accepts naruto’s love for him. they don’t take the many facets of his character into consideration, making his character less complex than what he actually is. they think love and justice are mutually exclusive, which it’s not. they also can’t be unbiased towards naruto, but since naruto genuinely cares about sasuke in the manga, they have to twist that and claim that “naruto never cared about sasuke and only wanted to control him” or some other bullshit. and no, i don’t think naruto always understood sasuke, always got him and his reasons, but i don’t see how that’s a flaw either, it’s called character development. and, unlike those people, i also don’t feel the need to go through a checklist of whatever naruto did or didn’t do, because those don’t ruin or outshine the bigger picture that is a story about love and devotion and being there for someone and feeling pain when they are in pain, a story that, despite all its flaws, shows that naruto is the only person that sympathises with sasuke, the only one that says what he does is understandable, and clearly the only one who stood against the village to protect his precious bond and even gave up on his own dream for sasuke. nor i eat the narrative up as if it’s 100% right, or pick a side as completely right or completely wrong, since i have critical thinking and am able to understand that there’s nuance in life and that a lot of kishimoto’s ideas weren’t adequate to the magazine he worked for. but, above all, i am able to understand that both characters are happier when they are together and that they balance each other out, like yin and yang.
i myself am very critical of the naruto ending, but i can acknowledge that it’s harmful for both naruto’s and sasuke’s characters, not only one or the other. it does both dirty because it prioritised easy plot conclusions over satisfying character arcs, since the editors pushed for boruto as an easy cash grab, be it because of their behaviour or their beliefs/politics. naruto has been someone that rejected a lot of aspects of the shinobi system, he promised to change it in multiple occasions, because of multiple reasons, so why that’s not the case in boruto? because you can’t have haha ninja kids, in which the main character is the son of the village leader, if the village leader is against being a ninja, knows the problems of being a ninja kid, so everything is swept under the rug for the sake of a sequel no one asked for. the same way sasuke can’t keep his need for justice and revolution, otherwise it contradicts the idea of the sequel. but i’m thankfully aware that the naruto ending we’ve got isn’t a consequence of naruto and sasuke’s reconciliation, isn’t because sasuke accepted naruto’s love for him, isn’t because sasuke didn’t go for his own self destruction in a plan that honestly wasn’t going to work. and i’m not someone who thinks that kishimoto handled everything perfectly, but i see that a lot has to do with the narrative of the story, other than the character itself, a narrative that also forces itachi down people’s throats and, honestly, that was something that made both naruto’s and sasuke’s characters worse, as well as their views and resolutions.
i understand that people that love sasuke notice that a lot of times he gets the short end of the stick in the fandom, including the sns fandom (and especially the sasunaru one), he truly does and i hate that as well. but my response to it is fortunately not hating on naruto, because the character has nothing to do with bad fan interpretations. naruto pretty much acts the opposite of what a lot of people would like him to act actually. when they want sasuke to “redeem himself” and show that he’s worthy of naruto’s love, naruto has accepted sasuke already, he has never held anything against sasuke and never stopped believing he is a good person. when they want sasuke to act out of guilt and regret, the moment sasuke starts doubting himself at vote2, naruto tells him to “stop sulking” in his very unrefined naruto way, but sasuke likes him just like that. i would rather criticise the fandom’s attitudes and interpretations other than responding with nonsensical character hate, which i do already.
and there’s also the fact that a lot of them are homophobic and in denial. but a lot of people will only “understand” what they want to, really.
sorry if i extended myself on this one, but, like i said, i’ve talked about this so much already, and believe me, there’s much more besides this.

Do you believe that because people aren’t ok with what you say about fs? Like you say she likes waffles and they say no she doesn’t? Because they don’t fit the description?
I think it’s a combination of things that are not specific to this situation but more internet culture generally. The first is trolls. There are people who run around the internet trying to pick fights with people because they are unhealed and would rather pull others down than work on their own growth. They will have a problem with everything said by everyone because they want to have a problem. They don’t care what your stance is, they will choose the opposite and argue it, usually very rudely. They will often employ techniques such as deliberately misunderstanding what is being stated to bait people into defending themselves against accusations that they said things they never did.
The second group is decent people who see the discourse around “you said you like X which means you are against Y” and they are Y, or know people who are Y, and they just want to make sure others understand Y and that it’s ok to be Y because they’ve seen what happens when intolerance spreads. This is why tolerating the intolerant is a problem. If you let them, the trolls will destroy the world while they’re standing on it.
There is a third group of people who just generally don’t understand or who genuinely misunderstand because language is nuanced and they want to make sure I’m not just being sarcastic. The fourth group is people who, like you say, want to be the person I’m talking about and will fight for me to represent them. I won’t.
The last group is the self involved who frame their worldview to themselves and can’t understand why what fs or Chris might be or want is different from what they want or are because let me tell you about me. This is the bean soup phenomenon from that TikTok where she talks about a viral bean soup TikTok that are full of comments where people are asking what if they don’t like beans and she points out you see this everywhere. People asking about how to apply things to them that don’t apply to them without stopping to think it doesn’t have to because it’s for the people it does apply to.

A Wisp of Smoke - Chapter 1 (Mike Duarte x F!Reader)
Summary: An unconventional member joins the Bronx Gang Unit.
Word Count: 3364
Content Warning: This is mildly canonical but like not really, so if that bothers you, then I’d skip. Some physical description - gave hte reader some gray hair cause I'm old and I want to represent some old people lol. Edit that out of your mind if you need to. Foul language (if that bothers you?), Gang talk, coworkers who don’t like each other, this part I don’t think has anything that would be triggering, but if you feel differently I can update the warnings.
A/N: When I tell you that I started writing this in October…it means exactly that. This has morphed into something different than I was expecting and I imagine I will have to scrap some stuff I have written once the next episode airs, so this is EVOLVING. Who even knows what this will be about by the time it’s finished. God help me. If there are typos, I apologize - I proof read this a few times and i'm sure somewhere there is something wrong
UM, Minors probably shouldn’t read this but I’m not your mother.

The thing about the subway is it takes time to understand the quirks—the nuances—of the subway lines you take. The majority of your time is taking one line to and from work if you’re lucky. You’ve been taking one train line for so long, you’re at 90% accuracy of predicting when something is about to go wrong. You like the routine of it—knowing if you get to the platform right at 8:01 AM you’ll only have to wait a minute before the train comes and you’ll get to work early. It’s an art and a science, but it takes practice. It’s why taking a job so far out of your usual subway line is annoying; you have to learn it all over again. It’s made even worse by having to switch to another line, if something goes wrong on that first leg of the commute, you’re fucked for the rest of it.
And today, you feel like you’re fucked. You leave your apartment like a parent leaving for the airport; panicking about the time and trying to make sure you have everything. You feel smug catching the subway right when it pulls into the platform and getting in a nearly empty subway car. The smugness fades when you transfer to another train that happily sits between stations for 30 minutes and then decides to switch to the express track. It’s not express for you though, of course. It puts you a good mile away from where you need to be, instead of the five blocks you planned for. The extra distance isn’t an issue, for once you might show up on time without having to walk around the block ten times. It is, however, unseasonably warm for February and now your coat is overkill. You stop and take it off, juggling your bag from hand to hand as you remove it. It’s insane, not even being able to feel cold in February in New York.
While you walk the unfamiliar sidewalks of the South Bronx you think about how this is your brother-in-law Tommy’s doing. You don’t even know how or why he’s sending you up to the Bronx as some kind of backfill in the Gang Unit. You aren’t a cop, so you have no idea why they’d want you up there. You feel like it’s going to look pretty strange, a senior analyst for the NYPD in the Intelligence Bureau, joining the Gang Unit. Gangs in the Bronx aren’t really on your radar; the majority of your time is spent juggling mostly empty threats against NYC. Analyzing the message boards and social media where people spew garbage 24/7. It’s weird to think that maybe this will be a break from that.
You do know a little about Duarte’s reputation. For as much as Tommy thinks gossiping is a female trait he certainly loves to partake in it. You heard all about the drama between him and Captain Benson–Tommy was almost gleeful when recounting it. You get the impression that like most men in the NYPD Duarte is only happy when he gets his way. You could be completely wrong, it’s not like Tommy is the most reliable narrator.

The precinct looks different than you thought it would. You had imagined something along the lines of a bland box with windows, but this is a beautiful limestone building. Some of the stone work looks like it belongs in an Italian palazzo in the 16th century. The inside reminds you of an old library with the heavy wood furniture and dim lighting. It’s really quite something—all these disappearing architectural gems throughout all the boroughs. As you walk towards the Desk Sergeant you wonder how much longer it will be around before the city turns it into a glassbox citing progress in the neighborhood.
When you ask where you can find Captain Duarte you realize the charm seems to end with the interior and doesn’t really extend to the people. She looks like you’ve just ruined her day by speaking to her. She nods her head towards the stairs and says it’s the third floor. You thank her, thinking maybe that’s her problem, no one ever sounds grateful for her assistance. Halfway up the stairs you do consider turning around and walking right back down and out of the building. You suppress the urge; dealing with Tommy in the aftermath of flaking would probably be worse than whatever fresh hell is waiting for you a few flights up.
You duck into the bathroom when you get to the third floor and are relieved when you find it empty. You set your bag on the edge of the sink, and drape your coat over a stall door. You turn back to the mirror and give yourself a once over. You were going for an overall look of extreme competence so you went with all black. Black silk button down, black skinny jeans, black thick soled loafers. You think maybe you look like you’re about to attend a funeral—probably your own. You hike up your jeans a little and try to ignore how much your feet hurt. You look back up to your face in the mirror to check your makeup. It still looks good; your eyeliner is intact and hopefully giving the impression that you’re precise, detail oriented. Your hair looks fine, the gray pieces framing your face, glossy under the overhead lights. You used to hate that you started going gray fairly young; you must have spent thousands covering it up over the years. At some point you stopped caring and just let it be. It came with a fun bonus, men you worked with suddenly thought you were old and left you alone. You give yourself one last once over before washing your hands. As you grab your things and head out of the bathroom you run through the little information you have like you’re cramming for a test.
An officer shows you to Captain Duarte’s office and tells you that you can wait inside, that he doesn’t know when he’ll be back. It’s very you to think that you’re going to be late to something and be the person that ends up waiting. When the officer leaves you put your bag on one of the chairs and drape your coat over the back. His desk is neat and you don’t see much in the way of personal effects on it. There’s a few books and you’re tempted to go to the other side of his desk to get a better look, but restrain yourself knowing the moment you do, he will come walking in. You sit down in one of the chairs and wait.
—-
As Duarte approaches his office he can see you sitting inside. He had put your arrival out of his mind once McGrath had told him and seeing you now throws him off for a moment. He should be prepared, he only knows what McGrath told him. Although, he’s sure that since McGrath is the one who sent you here, the information isn’t reliable. When you get up and introduce yourself, his initial impression is that you’re prissy. The way your coat is folded over the back of one of the chairs. How you’re now clasping your hands in front of you. Your outfit, a far cry from the recently departed, hoodie-clad Muncy. He can’t tell what he hates more right now, the way you look or that you were foisted on him by McGrath.
Duarte closes the door to his office and turns back to face you.
“I don’t really know what you’re doing here. You have no gang—no actual police experience. I’d wager to say you’ve never used a gun. I don’t care about your intelligence experience. Frankly, you could single handedly bring down all gang activity in this city and it wouldn’t matter to me. If you think whatever relationship you have with McGrath is going to help you here, you’re wrong.”
It’s a lot all at once and you try to ignore the way he says ‘relationship’. As if you slept with Tommy to get you a job with the Gang Unit. If you’re going to sleep your way to a new job in the NYPD, it wouldn’t be for a mostly lateral position all the way in the Bronx. You can feel yourself about to do that thing where you match the energy that’s being directed your way. It’s great when the person you’re dealing with isn’t an asshole. But if they’re looking to take the low road, well you own a home there.
“I’m sorry, I must have blacked out. I think I missed a part where you said something like ‘I’m glad to have you on the team.’”
The look on his face tells you he was expecting you to be more yielding in your response. Maybe eight or ten years ago you would have been. You’re tired of minimizing yourself to make men in the NYPD feel better.
“If I felt that way, I would have said it. This is real shit we deal with, no one here has time to babysit you.”
“Well, I’ll just have to cut the crust off my own sandwich then, won’t I?” You try to keep your voice calm. “Look, I’m good at my job and whatever it is I’m supposed to do here, I’ll be good at that too.”
Duarte grabs a box off of his desk and thrusts it at you.
“I think you’re going to find your confidence is misplaced.”
You balance the box on your hip as you pick up your coat and bag from the chair. You consider not saying anything else, but when you get to the door you turn around and smile.
“I just have to say, this has just been so pleasant. Really looking forward to working with you.”
He huffs in your general direction before turning back to his desk. You know he’s setting you up for failure—not giving you a single inch already. He’s probably looking forward to watching you spin your wheels and flame out. If there’s anyone that can dig their heels in it’s you, so if he is looking for some kind of low level fight you’re ready.
—-
You’re unpacking the box at your desk when you see a friendly face standing at the desk across from yours. It could be Satan smiling at you at this point and you’d take it. You both introduce yourselves as he sits down.
“Should I call you Jordan or Williams? I know how much everyone in the NYPD loves going by their last name.”
“Ha! True. Honestly, either is fine.”
You pull another stack of files and a hard drive out the box and look at your computer for the time. When you see it’s barely 10AM you know it’s going to be a long rest of the day.
“Well, Jordan, can I ask you something?”
“Let me guess, your face is giving me, is he always like that?”
“Ha, yes that is the question.”
Jordan lets out a sigh, “It depends. He’s still pissed at McGrath I think. After he let Captain Benson snatch Muncy from us. And then Benson gets attacked, I don’t know, there’s a lot going on.” He pauses for a moment. “It’s fucked up, but he’s probably worried McGrath sent you up here as a spy or something.”
“What if he did?”
Jordan leans back in his chair and scans your face trying to determine if you’re telling the truth.
“Did he?”
You give Jordan a wry smile.
“No. But it will be fun letting Captain Duarte think so.”
You can’t help but laugh because it’s so dumb; that someone would think you were sent up here to spy. It seems like something Tommy would do—send someone up here to unknowingly spy for him. Tommy is an idiot, but you’re not.
Jordan chuckles as he shakes his head.
“I think it’s going to be good having you around.”
You both chat a little more and you’re able to get from him what you couldn’t from Duarte; what he’s actually looking for. You already had a feeling that he wanted to treat gangs like terrorist groups and your theory proves true. It also proves true that he wanted someone with your experience but who was also a detective. He must think Tommy short-changed him with you so he could have a person on the inside. At least now you have a clearer picture of why he hates you. You’d probably hate you too if you were in Duarte’s shoes.
You spend the rest of the morning going through everything Duarte gave you. It’s strange trying to apply everything you know to a completely new set of circumstances. You can already feel some doubt creeping in. Yes you’re good at your job—but this is not that. You think that Duarte probably views you as some interloper trying to use this as some kind of play to get ahead. Take credit for fixing a problem and leave behind other growing problems. It’s only partially true; you don’t care about taking credit for things but you are an interloper. It’s not like this is really your community; you don’t live in areas impacted by gang violence. You don’t have the depth and breadth of knowledge on the specific systemic issues that allow this type of thing to flourish. With counter-terrorism it always seems like a much broader issue where the violence impacts many, where gang violence only affects the few. It’s something that you feel like you’re going to be unpacking for as long as you’re here.
Duarte and Williams leave early in the afternoon. You don’t know if you were expecting Duarte to tell you what’s going on, but he doesn’t. He just gives you an annoyed look as he passes by your desk and you give him a tight lipped smile. You think back to this morning and wish you would have taken the high road and acquiesced to his running commentary of your lack of abilities. It’s the ‘relationship’ jab that’s bothering you the most for some reason—probably because it was so unnecessary. You wish you were the type of person that could just move on from comments like that but you’re not; it’s probably why your last relationship ended. So you know you’re going to hold on to that relationship comment much longer than necessary.
With Duarte gone you feel like you can finally relax; your shoulders drop and you take a few quiet breaths. You plug in the hard drive to your laptop and try to figure out where to start. When you first started with the bureau in counter-terrorism, it was overwhelming, but you quickly found your footing. It was a lot of research and developing counterintelligence reports. It was your job to plan, research, develop, and communicate in-depth analysis of targets, networks, and issues to key leaders in the department. You know how to plan and implement strategies based on a combination of information and gut feeling. At least here you won’t be starting entirely from scratch. You have your experience—and while this is a different set of circumstances you know what’s needed. You settle in and start familiarizing yourself with all the information you have.
You want to memorize the faces, the names, everything about the people in the files and computer in front of you. You know right now the focus seems to be BX9, but you also know as these groups collapse they splinter off or join existing gangs. You work on putting something together that you can leave for Duarte. The thought crosses your mind that if he doesn’t expect anything of you then why bother, but you have enough self respect to not do that.
—-
He sees you in his office as he comes into the squad room. He can see through the open blinds that you’re standing behind his desk, looking out of the window towards the street. He was hoping you’d be gone and that he wouldn’t have to deal with you again today. He just wants some fucking peace.
“Do you need something?” Duarte’s voice is quiet as he enters his office but he sees you jump a little in place at the sound of it. As you turn around and see it’s him you half smile. He recognizes it as the kind of smile that says you didn’t want to see him either. He thinks for a moment how this could have gone differently. How he could have been given someone qualified—a real detective. He wouldn’t have this generalized annoyance he’s been feeling since this morning.
“No, sorry. Was just leaving something on your desk.”
You brush past him as you say it and it breaks him from his train of thought. He watches you grab your things from your desk and then turn to leave. He sees you stop as Williams comes back to his desk. He watches as you say something to Williams but it’s not loud enough for him to hear. Whatever it was it must have been funny because Williams laughs. Duarte calls him into his office and he hears you say goodnight as you’re walking out of the squad room.
“You need something, Cap?”
“I want you to keep an eye on her.”
“Yeah, of course.”
“I need to know if she’s—”
Williams cuts him off and shakes his head.
“I don’t think she’s like that if that’s what you’re getting at. I like her.”
“Good for you. Just do what I ask.”
“Aye, aye Cap.”
Williams turns to leave and Duarte closes the office door behind him. He goes over to his desk and opens the bottom drawer and pulls out a bottle of bourbon and a glass. It’s incredible how fucking exhausted he is every day. Every day since the subway attack in Manhattan has steadily been draining him. And then Benson getting attacked and her inserting herself into the investigation; he feels like everyone is coming at him from all sides. He feels like a tire slowly losing air. He uncorks the bottle and pours himself a drink and downs it before sitting in his chair.
He mulls over the decision the DA’s office made every single day. On the surface he understood the reasoning behind it. But deeper, he felt it was a mistake, a decision made for optics. A lie that Manhattan has rid itself of BX9. That only the poor fucks in the Bronx have to deal with them from now on. Well that went out the fucking window once Benson got kicked in the ribs. If she had listened to him instead of only thinking about her case it would be a different story. Instead he has two dead kids in Rikers and he’s hunting for more. He pours himself another drink while he tries to ignore the pressure building in his chest. He’s grateful for the nearly empty floor, the quiet.
He leans in his chair and notices a manilla folder on his desk; it has a post-it with his name on it scrawled in unfamiliar handwriting. Maybe you’re already resigning, it wouldn’t surprise him. He knows he wasn’t very welcoming. He has no desire, no energy to be—this job is all consuming. He grabs the file folder and opens it. Inside he sees you’ve put together a briefing based on all the information you went through. You seem to have analyzed what you view as gaps in the systems that are being used to monitor gang activity currently. You’ve even outlined the resources you’ll need. It’s not even entirely focused on BX9–you included other gangs in your briefing, gangs that weren’t included in the information he gave you. He feels a little sting of something reading through everything. He can’t tell if he’s impressed or irritated that you put this much together in a day. He realizes that he knows almost nothing about you, having put in almost no effort to find out. He closes the folder and starts making some calls. He wasn’t expecting so much from you on your first day.
