alright everyone listen I have such a delightful encounter to share with y’all today

I was just in my Academic English class which had been going… rather poorly. We’re supposed to do oral summaries of paragraphs and while that was pretty easy for me (being fluent etc) the other students (ESLs) were Struggling. very clearly. and you could tell the professor was also getting pretty frustrated — in general it was the kind of atmosphere I am not entirely unused to, one where it feels like the whole class is being scolded for not understanding (especially since I was there and did understand, so clearly the teaching wasn’t the issue)

anyway I was feeling a bit despondent as I packed up after class bcs I normally enjoy Academic English, but then the professor asked me to stay back so she could talk to me for a bit

okay! that’s not concerning at all

a bit of small talk later, turns out she wants to have my opinion on her teaching and how she can make it better. something is going wrong here and she wants to fix it.

and so… I give her my opinion. maybe she’s going a bit fast. maybe she should try alternating between English and the native language. and it’s so wild to me how as I was doing this I didn’t feel anxious — I was calm and thoughtful, mirroring her calm frustration and genuine desire to improve

and she listened! we went back and forth a bit, then she decided she’d try some of the things I recommended. she even asked me to continue giving feedback because it was very important and helpful to her
