yes house md as a show is outlandish and insane. house is literally a truman show of his own show. background characters are made out of cardboard, the walls are glass, he is just allowed to bully patients and his coworkers for funzies. but like there is also a deeply realistic element to house as a character. his actions are in line with his life, his backstory, and with his predicament. his chronic pain which lead to an opioid addiction, his childhood trauma, his trust issues that have definitely been shattered throughout his life leading to his cynicism, his refusal to seek mental support. of course the one constant and true trusting relationship in his life will also be codependent. this all makes sense. but this is also a show where house gets shot, gets recruited by the CIA for an episode, goes to jail multiple times. but it’s also a story about a deeply damaged man making the best of what he has and also learning to accept love? oh yeah and this is also a sherlock adaptation.

house md is in a way extremely groundbreaking and no show has gotten even close to what it managed to do. house is a disabled character who stays disabled for the whole series and yes he is a flawed and damaged person and his bad actions are in line with his character and dealing with chronic pain. he changes even though he is adamant for the whole show that people don’t change. house becomes self sacrificing and learns to love in his own flawed way. he goes to therapy and seeks help and support and he is 100% not the same person he started out the series as. there are canon queer characters that aren’t only treated as jokes and have actual three dimensional character arcs. there are unhealthy relationships and healthy relationships. there is loss but it’s not treated as shock value. actions have consequences. characters stay and go. house md is just as real as it is outlandish at times. it skirts the line with absurdity and realism. it’s beautiful and tragic and at it’s core it is a story of love and becoming a better person despite your trauma and flaws. it doesn’t treat house’s trauma and disability as an excuse for his actions but it’s why he is who he is. and despite all of this, house is happy at the end of the show even though the one person he truly loves, his male best friend, is dying. they could have gone the conventional route and gave wilson a female love interest who is actually good for him at the end of the show and yet they choose to have him run away to spend his final days alive with house. and this show ended before gay marriage was legalized. oh my god.

At the end of this show they really said this show is about love, it’s about the sacrifices we make for other people, from strangers to people that redefined our lives by being in them, it’s about love pulling you out of misery, it’s about companionship and community and platonic and romantic and familial love and what it means to be a person and about how maybe house can’t be fixed but how maybe he can change

house tells wilson he’s the wrong friend to come to if he actually needs to talk about the affair with his wife. wilson goes to house when he finds out his wife tells him he’s having an affair

and we’re all supposed to think this is a normal heterosexual friendship between normal heterosexual men

Also as a house fan- i keep saying this but even if House and Wilson’s relationship weren’t basically explicitly romantic (they all but tell people that they’re romantically involved), their relationship is so much deeper than just a friendship. Honestly when I finished the show, I couldn’t really tell what they were to each other, but I knew whatever it was, it was everything to them. The fact that every other relationship for them crashed and burned (sometimes literally), but in the end they’re still together- god. It sends my heart into a fit. House and Wilson have something so real. And it’s incredible. I don’t believe it’s queerbait, because queerbait doesn’t pay off, but Hilson?? They’re by each other to the bitter end, at their worst, at their best, no matter what.

What I’m getting at is Hilson transcends at the very least MY ability to define their relationship. Hilson encapsulates exactly why House doesn’t like to see his patients.

And House doesn’t just. Commit medical malpractice for funsies. He’s breaking rules to save the lives of people who have given up hope.

one of my worst fears as a house fan is being like “yeah house and wilson are so gay” and ppl thinking the house fandom is just one of the ones that can’t just let 2 men be friends/depict a male friendship and is just exaggerating/reading too much into stuff like NO if anything we’re understating it like 😭
