the fact that shakespeare was a playwright is sometimes so funny to me. just the concept of the "greatest writer of the English language" being a random 450-year-old entertainer, a 16th cent pop cultural sensation (thanks in large part to puns & dirty jokes & verbiage & a long-running appeal to commoners). and his work was made to be watched not read, but in the classroom teachers just hand us his scripts and say "that's literature"
just...imagine it's 2450 A.D. and English Lit students are regularly going into 100k debt writing postdoc theses on The Simpsons screenplays. the original animation hasn't even been preserved, it's literally just scripts and the occasional SDH subtitles.txt. they've been republished more times than the Bible
#due to the Great Data Decay academics write viciously argumentative articles on which episodes aired in what order#at conferences professors have known to engage in physically violent altercations whilst debating the air date number of household viewers#90% of the couch gags have been lost and there is a billion dollar trade in counterfeit âlost copiesâ#serious note: i'll be honest i always assumed it was english imperialism that made shakespeare so inescapable in the 19th/20th cent#like his writing should have become obscure at the same level of his contemporaries#but british imperialists needed an ENGLISH LANGUAGE (and BRITISH) writer to venerate#and shakespeare wrote so many damn things that there was a humongous body of work just sitting there waiting to be culturally exploited...#i know it didn't happen like this but i imagine a English Parliament House Committee Member For The Education Of The Masses or something#cartoonishly stumbling over a dusty cobwebbed crate labelled the Complete Works of Shakespeare#and going 'Eureka! this shall make excellent propoganda for fabricating a national identity in a time of great social unrest.#it will be a cornerstone of our elitist educational institutions for centuries to come! long live our decaying empire!'#'what good fortune that this used to be accessible and entertaining to mainstream illiterate audience members...#..but now we can strip that away and make it a difficult & alienating foundation of a Classical Education! just like the latin language :)'#anyway maybe there's no such thing as the 'greatest writer of x language' in ANY language?#maybe there are just different styles and yes levels of expertise and skill but also a high degree of subjectivity#and variance in the way that we as individuals and members of different cultures/time periods experience any work of media#and that's okay! and should be acknowledged!!! and allow us to give ourselves permission to broaden our horizons#and explore the stories of marginalized/underappreciated creators#instead of worshiping the List of Top 10 Best (aka Most Famous) Whatevers Of All Time/A Certain Time Period#anyways things are famous for a reason and that reason has little to do with innate âvalueâ#and much more to do with how it plays into the interests of powerful institutions motivated to influence our shared cultural narratives#so i'm not saying 'stop teaching shakespeare'. but like...maybe classrooms should stop using it as busy work that (by accident or designs)#happens to alienate a large number of students who could otherwise be engaging critically with works that feel more relevant to their world#(by merit of not being 4 centuries old or lacking necessary historical context or requiring untaught translation skills)#and yeah...MAYBE our educational institutions could spend less time/money on shakespeare critical analysis and more on...#...any of thousands of underfunded areas of literary research i literally (pun!) don't know where to begin#oh and p.s. the modern publishing world is in shambles and it would be neat if schoolwork could include modern works?#beautiful complicated socially relevant works of literature are published every year. it's not just the 'classics' that have value#and actually modern publications are probably an easier way for students to learn the basics. since lesson plans don't have to include the#important historical/cultural context many teens need for 20+ year old media (which is older than their entire lived experience fyi)

IF YOU ASK ME TO LEAVE, IâLL STAY FOREVER ; SATORU GOJO
synopsis; satoru is stubborn; even when plagued by such a high fever, he insists thereâs no need to take care of him. thankfully, youâre equally as stubborn.
word count; 10.8k
contents; satoru gojo/reader, gn!reader, implied non-sorcerer!reader, sickfic, reverse comfort, sickening amounts of fluff, lots of petnames, satoru gojo vs the mortifying ordeal of being loved, just a tinyyyy bit of angst if u rlly squint, literally just satoru being pampered for like 10k words straight, heâs cute when heâs sick but still manages to be a lil shit <33, heâs also a huge sap you have been warned!!
a/n; what can i say, im a proud member of the âsatoru gojo needs to be babied relentlesslyâ club <33 heâs just a little guy!! tagging @catchuuu my beloved for being the sweetest enjoy a healthy dose of sick sleepy satoru <33 i am tagging all toru enjoyers in spirit btw i love u all
youâve never seen satoru like this before.
head buried into a big pillow, white locks tousled and sticking to his forehead â skin sweaty, hot to the touch, with a flushed face to match. heavy breaths fall from his parted lips, blinking in and out of consciousness, squeezing his eyes shut.
itâs nothing like the joyous, loud, cocky satoru youâre so used to. heâs weak. heâs fatigued.
heâs completely, undoubtedly sick.
âreally, baby,â he slurs, raspy and dry. still attempting to raise himself up, arms straining under the weight of his shivering body. âthereâs no need fâ ââ
unceremoniously, his limbs give out beneath him, and he tumbles right back down; a meek little wince escaping his throat as his face falls back into the mattress. the sound makes your heart squeeze tightly in your chest.
âah. thatâsâŚâ he tries to speak, a disgruntled hum muffled by the sheets. â⌠annoying.â
satoru sounds frustrated. you can tell heâs resisting the urge to close his eyes, a little helpless, unable to even move properly, like a fish out of water. heâs still breathing unevenly, still sweating, still burning up â you can practically feel it, from where youâre standing, crouched down by his bed.
youâve never, ever seen satoru like this. youâve seen him sniffling during flu season, wrecked with headaches during rainy season. youâve seen him vulnerable; not many times, but enough that it matters.Â
but youâve never seen him like this.
(and it makes you terribly anxious.)
âsatoru, please just ââ you croak, gnawing at your bottom lip. trying desperately to swallow the worry in your chest. âdonât overdo it. please?â
you can hear the anxious little timbre of your own voice, and you can feel the frown tugging at your lips. but you canât do anything to quell the insistent pitter patter of your heartbeat, the ache that accompanies it. satoruâs lying down, still trying to gather the strength to reassure you, even through the feverish haze clouding his mind.Â
he looks so small.
this wasnât what you were expecting to see, today. you were expecting to meet up with satoru, and see his happy little grin, those tiny dimples and freckles that only show themselves in the light of the sun. you were expecting to feel the weight of his hand in yours, as you strolled down to the new crĂŞpe stand heâs been wanting to check out since he first found their instagram account.
you were expecting to see him happy. healthy. a little obnoxious, a little annoying â but hopelessly sweet. all the love you could ever need, molded into a human shape. your little angel.
a sigh slips from your lips. you canât help it; because satoru is just so stubborn, so closed off, and he can be such an idiot sometimes. you knew something was off the moment he sent you that text, asking you oh so charmingly, apologetically, if you could postpone your date for just an hour or so. you knew something was wrong, but he still wouldnât let up until you brought out the 𼺠emojis.Â
and then he told you he was fine. itâs all he ever is, apparently.
my throatâs just a little scratchy, is all. wouldnât want you to miss out on the voice you love so much, yeah?
give me an hour and iâll be perfect for you. <3
moron.
heâs curled up in a fetal position, trying to stop himself from shivering, muttering little reassurances under his breath that you canât make out. wearing ripped jeans and a nice jacket, like he was fully prepared to head out like this â like he genuinely thought an hour, some painkillers and a dream would be enough to chase away a fever this severe. like he was so desperate to see you he was fully willing to take that risk.
moron. moron. he shouldâve called you the moment he realized he was sick. instead, you had to coax him into letting you come over, with a flurry of sad and cute emojis you know make him go weak at the knees when theyâre coming from you.
and here you are. in satoruâs house, in front of his bed, trying to convince him that he is, in fact, sick.Â
but he just wonât listen.
âjust â gimme a couple minutes, honey?â your boyfriend mumbles, barely coherent, stringing words together haphazardly. awfully dizzy. âi just need the painkillers to kick in, i promise i ââ
âsatoru.â
thereâs a sad tint to your voice, now. unmistakable. one that satoru notices, even through the feverish, muddy filter over his reality.Â
and it makes him quiet down.
(he doesnât want to disappoint you.)
as gently as you can, you settle down on the bed, eyes painfully softened. overflowing with care. towering over him, leaning close â to press your lips against his scorching forehead, brushing away his sweaty bangs with a palpable tenderness. your voice soothing, coming out almost as a low coo. youâre frustrated, and exasperated.
but most of all, youâre worried.
âgo back to sleep,â you hum, a gentle command. your hand finds his, cold skin meeting warm, tracing circles over his palm. âiâll take care of you.â
âthereâs no need,â he mutters, instantaneous. so used to denying kindness.Â
but he curls an arm around your waist, anyway, tugging you closer; a little needy. like youâre much too far away for his liking. finally beginning to settle down, coaxed into resting by the soft touches your grace him with. itâs only a matter of time.
so you keep your lips against his forehead, cradling his slender fingers in yours, murmuring little whispered reassurances. and before you know it, his lashes have fluttered shut, like a white dove landing on the ground. he still looks so troubled, so meek. you canât resist the urge to soothe him, hand cupping his face, thumb smoothing over the apple of his cheek. you watch him lean into it, eyes dripping with care. your poor baby.Â
for a couple precious moments, you allow yourself to indulge in the sight. even like this, he looks a bit like an angel, a painting come to life. like one wrong brushstroke could smudge him.Â
so youâre delicate, as you trace little hearts into his skin, delicate as you maneuver his body enough to peel the layers of clothing off him â leaving him in only an oversized tee and a pair of briefs. satoru can only whine, softly, so quiet you barely even hear him. so disoriented, on the brink of falling into a deep slumber. some part of him is trying to resist, youâre sure, still agonizing over the date heâs missing out on. as if anything matters more than his health.
but it doesnât work. he can only let out a tiny groan, hopelessly pliant as you tuck him in, pulling a big blanket over his shoulders. you card through his hair, another soft kiss planted on his sweaty forehead â and your hand stays between his locks until youâre sure heâs asleep. his breathing mellows out, his grip around your waist loosens, seeking comfort from you even in his dreams.
youâd crawl under the blankets with him, but you have work to do.
stealing one final glance at your fever-ridden lover, your heartbeat ricochets. he still looks so meek, all warm and sweaty, shirt sticking to his skin. a frown tugs at your bottom lip.
satoru is always so stubborn, refusing to lean on others for support. you wish he had called you immediately, nagged at you to come baby him. sure, you mightâve sighed in faux exasperation, and teased him a little, but it still wouldâve made you feel happy. useful. and you wouldâve done it in a heartbeat. maybe, if you just prove that you can take care of him properly, heâll do it next time.
so you stand up, leaning down to press your lips against his forehead one last time, and make your way towards the kitchen.
satoruâs house is spacious. a little too spacious, enough for at least three people to live in comfortably; nice furniture, an expensive sofa in the living room, a large tv youâre almost certain he only keeps around for white noise. such are the ways of the rich, you suppose. he doesnât invite you over very often, so youâve never had the chance to get very affiliated with the space. itâs always the other way around â him, waiting for you on the couch when you get home, chirping out an unconvincing donât even worry about it, baby! when you ask how he got in without a key. or him, showing up at your doorstep in the middle of the night, filling the sleepy silence with jokes to distract you from the bags under his eyes.
(he likes it when you cling to him in your sleep â he sleeps a lot better that way. thatâs what he told you, at least, when you brought him coffee in bed that one time. a little glimmer of honesty.)
he stays over so often he might as well just move in, but you arenât really sure how to even approach that subject. some part of you fears itâd be too much, too intimate, that heâd pack his bags and run away. bringing all his secrets with him, that soft laughter youâve grown so fond of. so you figure itâs better to let him make a home out of yours, let him curl up on your couch and snack on the candy you hid in your kitchen cabinets. thatâs safe for him.
and now that youâve seen his home up close â if you can even call it that â you think youâre starting to understand his preference. because itâs spacious, yes, but also empty. save for expensive furniture and fake houseplants, there isnât anything to indicate that the apartment belongs to him, that he feels comfortable there. like he hasnât even bothered to make it his. like itâs about to be sold, and youâre just one of the potential buyers, checking the place out. admiring the patterns of the floorboards and the walls.
it doesnât feel like satoru at all.Â
his own bedroom was another story, a much more pleasant one. a lot more satoru. filled with little trinkets, key charms and souvenirs and silly figurines. a framed photo of three students by the windowsill, an old uniform hanging by his closet, socks strewn about here and there. a dying houseplant. comic books and movie posters and a ps5 you donât think heâs touched since he finished spiderman 2. a king sized bed, that makes him look like a spoiled little princess when heâs lying in it, next to a cat plushie you won for him at a fair. knowing he actually sleeps with it kind of makes you want to cry.
thereâs this particular scent, too, lingering in the air. mellow, nostalgic, the kind that soothes you with just a whiff; a blend between sunlight, expensive cologne, and something sweet. it clings to all his favorite clothes, to his skin. youâd live in it if you could.Â
something constricts, inside your chest â like thorny vines strangling your beating heart, pressing down ever so slightly. just thinking about it, about him, about his distressed expression as his head hit the pillow. making your way over to his kitchen, getting yourself affiliated with the space, preparing to make a good soup for his fever. the fridge is almost empty, save for sweets and that one drink you like. the takeout boxes on his kitchen table tells you all you need to know.
it only makes you worry more.
luckily, you were clever enough to buy your own ingredients on the way here. chop, chop, into tiny little pieces. chicken soup should help, shouldnât it? itâs all you can focus on, all you can hope for. anything is fine; you just want to help him, be of use somehow. he does so much for you.
you just want to give some of it back.
satoruâs loneliness is a subtle thing. flexible, alert, slipping away at the slightest sign of knowing eyes. for someone whoâs so often surrounded by people, cracking jokes and laughing louder than anyone else, he doesnât seem to make any noise when heâs alone. he curls into himself, just a bit, and a kind of reminiscence smooths over the contours of his face.Â
thatâs when you see him. that lonely, lonely guy. resigned to his self-imposed isolation, paradoxically yearning for something more. watching as the cherry trees bloom, like theyâll give him the answers he seeks once they bear fruit.
but the moment you come into view, he smiles. knowing you wonât push it â that youâll let him take his time. that youâll let him flee, just a little.Â
still, you canât help but wish heâd lean on you a little more. you wish you could chase his loneliness away with a pitchfork, but itâs a fickle creature. you somehow doubt he wants to part with it.Â
all you can do is love him. love him, love him, and love him some more; until heâs had his fill.
(youâre not sure he ever will. itâs a good thing, a very good thing, because youâre almost certain youâll never run out.)Â
and thatâs why youâre here. in his ghost of a home, his kitchen, pouring water into a large pot. tender, sprinkling love over every single action, every slice and dice, every piece of chicken and veggies thrown into the boiling water. you try and you try, hoping itâll reach him.
but before you can make another attempt, something reaches you, instead.
two long arms curl around your waist, suddenly, something warm and soft pressing itself against your back. and you almost flinch, completely caught up in the stirring of the soup, unsure of how much time has passed since you began. it jolts you out of your thoughts.Â
you know who it is, though. never mind the fact that heâs the only other person in the apartment; you know itâs him by his touch alone, the weight of his arms, that particular scent that surrounds him. like memories of summer.
itâs awfully sweet, the way he clings to you, the soft little blissful sigh that slips from his lips. but before you can feel moved at the domesticity of the gesture, worry clouds your senses. he doesnât even get the chance to speak.
âsatoru ââ you place a palm on his forearm, craning your head to look back at him. his forehead rests against your shoulder, and his eyes are closed. heâs still so warm, too warm. âwhat are you doing here? you should be resting.âÂ
your boyfriend mumbles something, under his breath, something that your ears canât quite digest. he shifts, a little, as if getting ready to put on some sort of act â to smile and joke, or laugh and tease you. you can imagine what heâd say if he wasnât in such a feverish state; heâd hug you from behind, a low purr of whatâcha up to? whispered right into your ear. then youâd jolt, and heâd giggle sheepishly, satisfied with the reaction.
but now, all he can do is cough. still leaning against you, gripping onto your midriff a little more desperately than usual. you step away from the stove, turning around, making sure your hands never leave his. looking up at him with concern in your eyes, noticing his little frown.
âcâmon, you need to lie down.â you reach for his cheek, cupping it in your palm, and he practically melts into it. enjoying the chilly sensation to his fever-ridden skin. âthe soupâll be finished soon, okay?â
â⌠you made,â he tries, syllables falling from his lips haphazardly. âsoup ââ a series of coughs. they cut him off, and the worry in your chest only deepens.Â
âdonât push yourself, okay? youâre really sick, dummy.â satoru pouts, but doesnât say anything, only clinging to you tighter when you usher him away. âletâs go back to your room, alright?â
but he wonât budge. heâs so sleepy, so sick and delirious, putting all his body weight on you. you try your best not to stumble beneath it.
âhoney,â you plead, holding him securely in your embrace. his arms around your waist, your hands on his shoulders. âwork with me, please? just gotta get you back to bed ââ
ââsâŚâ he whispers, suddenly, a raspy little thing. scratchy, meek, awfully earnest; you wonder if heâs too sick not to be. â⌠too lonely without you.âÂ
a moment passes. your breath hitches pitifully, at the base of your throat.
satoru is hugging you so tightly, as if you could disappear at any moment, slip away if he doesnât keep you close. heâs holding you as if pleading for comfort, for a touch of safety. as if he needs you. if his meek little admission hadnât already melted your heart the marrow, that thought certainly wouldâve done the job.
taking a moment to collect yourself, you inhale, face surely aflame. satoru just nuzzles into your shoulder, too tired to say anything else, wanting to be close to you. itâs a wonder your knees donât buckle.
gently, you let your hand trail upwards, palm smoothing down his hair. softly, like heâs a clingy, overgrown cat. âsorry,â you start, just a little breathless. âiâll be with you, okay? wonât leave you alone. i promise.â
thereâs an earnesty in your words that you doubt you could ever fake. satoru must hear it too, you think, because he finally begins to work with you. allowing you to stumble towards his bedroom, supporting his weight.
but once you make it to his bed, he still refuses to let go of you.
âtoru, gotta go finish that soup. ân make you some tea.â you rub his back, soothingly, as he nuzzles into the crook of your neck. shaking his head and emitting a throaty groan, only squeezing you tighter when you try to guide him under the covers. how cruel of him, to act so cute when said soup is most likely boiling over by the stove. âplease, sweetie? it wonât take long. i promise. you can go back to sleep.â
another groggy huff. youâre both still standing by the edge of the bed, and satoru still wonât let you leave. all you can do is sigh, smearing a little kiss against his neck.Â
he squirms, ever so slightly, and you get an idea.
so you keep pressing little kisses against his skin, knowing just how to make him melt. feeling him relax in your embrace, snuggle into your chest, so pliant that he lets you tuck him in â as long as your lips stay pressed against his jaw. before he can realize whatâs happening, you grab hold of the blanket, draping it over him; his half-lidded eyes blinking up at you. you press a final kiss against his forehead, grabbing the cat plushie from the edge of the bed and placing it close enough for satoru to reach if need be.
âiâll hurry, toru. be a good boy and stay here, alright?âÂ
a teasing lilt sneaks into your voice, coaxed out by how adorable your boyfriend looks like this; baby blue eyes all droopy, snowy hair messy as it falls across the cushion heâs resting on. blinking sluggishly, grunting a little in response.Â
when you scurry off the bed and make your way towards the door, you glance back at him. heâs still looking in your direction, with half-lidded eyes, and your chest aches. âiâll be back soon, baby,â you try to soothe him. âtry to sleep.â
this time, you hurry. body working almost on autopilot, images of your boyfriend still tugging at your heartstrings like heâs arranging an orchestra, moving your legs forward. before you know it, youâre walking back, carrying a tray with both your hands. steam wafts up from the hot soup and the warm cup of tea, shaking a little as you walk, a pair of painkillers in your pocket. just in case he needs more. an eager, pulsating joy rushes through your veins â now you can be with him, tend to him, not leave him alone in a room so like him you wish you could stay there forever.Â
your footsteps are light, almost careful as they cross the threshold. satoru stirs, waiting for you to come to his side, looking like a kicked puppy in his giant bed. he tries to lift himself up, but it looks like it requires an intense amount of focus, like his elbows could buckle any second.Â
âcareful,â you croon, hurrying over, placing the tray on the nightstand. gently pushing him back down on the mattress. he complies almost instantly, too out of it to put up a real fight. staring at you, as if in awe.
to satoru, you appear almost as an angel, a somewhat blurry figure that he recognizes without looking. your very presence is soothing, like a lullaby in human form. with the hazy filter clouding his mind, he canât even seem to form words correctly â all satoru can focus on is you. your movements, the lilt of your voice, a cold hand dulling the heat of his forehead. Â
his fever still hasnât gone down. you try and muster a smile, but youâre sure it must look painfully coated in unease. crouching down, you place your elbows on the bed, your jaw meeting the mattress. youâre at eye level with him, now.
âhey,â you start, low and comforting. you donât want to be too loud. âsorry it took so long.â
using what little energy he has left, satoru crosses the distance between you, inching closer and closer. noticing it, you reach a hand out to cup his cheek â lips quick to find his forehead. a barely audible sigh leaves him, and you smile.
âdâyou think you can eat?â you whisper, gazing at him fondly. treating him a little like a baby, maybe, but you canât help it when heâs like this. quiet as a mouse. âi made soup and tea⌠sound okay?â
he tries to make a noise. it comes out sounding like a strange blend between a dissatisfied groan and an affirming hum, but he still ends up nodding slightly. you wonder if indulging you is ingrained into his bone structure.Â
â⌠okay. think you can sit up, toru?â
once again, your boyfriend only hums â but he does begin to move, trying to hoist himself up, wobbling pitifully. you help, keeping him steady until his spine meets the headboard. slumped against it, he blinks slowly, feverishly.
âthank you.â you press a chaste kiss against his cheek, before reaching for the cup of tea, the scent of chamomile and lavender filling your senses. you blow on it softly. âhere. it should help with your throat, so try to drink a bit, okay? sâ got honey in it.â
silently, he accepts the cup, bringing it to his lips. when he takes a sip, you catch the slightest hint of a grimace on his lips; even with your warning of careful, itâs hot, you think he must have managed to burn his tongue.Â
satoru keeps his thoughts to himself, not wanting to worry you. but he canât say bringing himself to drink it is an easy endeavor, with how sweaty it makes him feel, how it forces him to acknowledge how painfully dry his throat is. how he canât even taste the herbs.
he wants to be good for you, though.
so he gulps it down, slowly, managing to sip almost all of it until you decide to give him a break. compared to this morning, he already feels just a little better, a little less like heâs in a fever dream. youâre sitting by the bedside, so patient, so caring. he canât take his eyes off you, even now. clearing his throat, attempting to get used to speaking again. âthanks.â
the mutter sounds strained, but slightly easier on the ears, easier to make out than before. courtesy of the honey, you assume. gosh, you hadnât realized youâd begun to miss his voice so much.Â
âno problem,â you hum, reaching over to tuck a strand of hair behind his ear. âthink you can eat something? or is that too much?â
ââcourse,â he croaks. thereâs a slight sense of liveliness in his eyes that wasnât there before, but before he can continue, heâs caught off by a small coughing fit. harmless, but sufficient in making you worry.Â
âno need to force yourself,â you soothe, patting down his head, watching as he quiets down. the tea mightâve given him a temporary energy boost, but you still donât want him to overdo it. âjust relax, satoru.â
he hums, weakly, and you reward him with a light ruffle of his hair. then you direct your attention to the soup on the nightstand, still hot, smelling of vegetable broth and fresh chicken and coriander. you bring the bowl down to your lap, and take a spoonful of the soup, blowing on it like you did with the tea. bringing it towards his lips.Â
âi dunno if itâll taste very good,â you admit, scratching absently at the back of your neck. âbut it should help with the fever, at least. iâd be happy if you could eat a bit.â
as his lips make contact with the metal of the spoon, satoru canât help but let himself be swept away. he still feels a little too hazy, too feverish to really comprehend whatâs happening; he feels oddly bare like this, vulnerable, a little afraid of what might come out of his mouth if he doesnât keep it shut. so he opts to accept the treatment heâs receiving, not putting up a fight or making a fuss. not meeting your expectant eyes.
(he feels a little shy, being spoonfed by you. how very unlike him.)
the soup does feel soothing. he thinks he can even get a sense of the taste, how hard you mustâve worked on it. but more than anything, the way youâre acting is like balm to his soul â looking at him so kindly, treating him so tenderly. offering him spoon after spoon with gentle words of encouragement. being babied in such a way makes him feel so oddly content that heâs almost embarrassed. it should be the other way around.Â
yet here you are, spoonfeeding him soup that you made yourself, because heâs sick, even though he hates to admit it, and you care about him. he allows the information to linger in the back of his head, for a while, wallowing in the comfort it brings him. fully comprehending it would take too much of a toll on him, in this state.Â
satoru basks in the intimacy of the situation, and so do you. brushing strands of hair away when they stick to his skin, pressing your lips against his forehead to check his temperature. you keep doing it until satoruâs appetite dwindles.
âalright, that should be fine ââ you glance down at the bowl, now roughly half-empty. more than enough, you think. âuhh⌠how do you feel?â
â⌠better,â satoru answers, truthfully, the ghost of a smile on his glossy lips. âthank you.â
for a second, you only stare, saying nothing. thereâs something in satoruâs expression that catches you off guard, something thatâs a little hard to identify. is it the way the light reflects off his skin, his pupils? the red, feverish flush of his skin? that flimsy little smile? or is it the honesty in his eyes, the way heâs looking at you like heâs trying to convey something he canât put into words?Â
as you look at him, take him in, the boy you love so dearly, you canât help but feel like he just carved open his chest â let you peek inside his ribcage. itâs hard not to feel flustered, in the presence of something so vulnerable.
and heâs thanking you. as if taking care of him is a great burden, a chore, something youâd demand gratitude for. you want to tell him that itâs the bare minimum, the very least of what he deserves. the very least of what you could, should do for him.
you want to tell him that heâs safe, here. that thereâs no need to be the strongest, whatever the hell that means, that he can let go of the burdens you know he hides from you. that he can just be your sick, terribly stubborn boyfriend.
â⌠okay,â is all you breathe out, every other word getting stuck in the back of your throat. âthatâs good.â
satoruâs fingers curl around yours, suddenly, where they lay on your lap. his movements are still a little groggy, disoriented, as he brings your hand up to his lips. theyâre warm and soft, especially so in light of his fever. he closes his eyes, white lashes catching the light of the sun, flitting in through the haphazardly closed blinds. your heartbeat stutters.
â⌠love you,â he mutters. a soft little thing. your eyes donât leave his face, and your lips part before your brain can instruct them to.
âi love you too,â you blurt out, instantaneous. like you couldnât bear to keep him waiting. â⌠satoru.â
he smiles against your skin. he always does, at the sound of those words. you make him feel so terribly, terribly weak, all the time, everyday. you make him feel so human, and he canât bring himself to think of it as a bad thing anymore.Â
heâs still cradling your hand when he brings it down to the blanket. âthanks for coming,â he continues, pushing himself. trying to get the words out while he still has the energy to say them. âyou didnât have to.â
theyâre a little clumsy, a little stale on his tongue, but theyâre honest. he is thankful â the prospect of being seen like this is discomforting, gruelingly so, but he doesnât mind nearly as much if itâs you. heâd never tell you, but he did feel just a little lonely, when he woke up this morning. disoriented, enveloped by hot flashes of pain, in a way heâs not used to in the slightest. missing out on your date, too, that he had been looking forward to ever since you decided on a time.Â
but, as if sensing it, you came to his rescue. the feeling of your lips on his skin was the first sensation he felt, when he woke up for the second time â with you by his side, this time. his guardian angel, carrying the scent of spring with you. the memory of a certain boy, of better times.Â
(satoru thinks youâre nostalgia personified. he likes to imagine that you met as children, underneath a cherry tree somewhere, but he knows itâs not true. thereâs no way he wouldnât remember you.)
you smile. pleased, at his show of vulnerability, small as it may be. âi wanted to,â you assure him. equally honest, equally full of double meanings and hidden messages that neither of you need to uncover to understand. â⌠i care about you. of course iâd come.â
a light, raspy chuckle; thatâs all satoru manages to vocalize. his mind is stuffed, and thereâs an ache in his chest, longing to be filled. itâs been there for a while now. but somehow, some way, you manage to fill it up, slowly but surely, almost effortlessly â with every sound you make, every slight movement, every flicker of an expression on your face. everything seems so effortlessly perfect, in his eyes.
the words leave his lips before his mind can think the thought to reel them back in.Â
âwhat did i do to deserve youâŚ?â
you blink. a moment passes.
then your eyes soften, considerably so, crumbling at the corners like the cookies satoru loves so much. heâs looking at you, eyes soft in a similar sense, layered over with adoration. you think the love inside your chest might crawl out of your throat and eat him alive.
a chuckle of your own drips into the air, quivering slightly. terribly fond. this time, youâre the one who drags his hand up to meet your lips; kissing his knuckle softly. his breath hitches.
âiâm the one who should be saying that to you,â you grin, a little weakly. and you mean it. you donât think youâve ever meant anything more.Â
itâs so honest that it strikes a cord right down his heart, more heat than the fever can account for rushing to his cheeks. satoru hopes you donât notice it. all he can do is squeeze your fingers, lightly, not trusting his voice not to break. silence lingers, and you only gaze at him softly.Â
â⌠do you want anything else?â you finally ask, with a tilt of your head. still so eager to assist, racking your brain to come up with anything else to do for him. âiâll get it for you, no matter what it is.â
and, truthfully, satoru thinks youâve done more than enough. more than he could ever make up for. but heâs always been greedy, and thereâs one thing, only one thing, one thing he canât help but ask for. something he craves more than anything. he canât help but indulge himself, indulge in his selfishness, in the need to feel your skin against his.Â
so he stretches his arms out, and looks at you with a distinctly needy glint in his eyes. his fingers move in a grabby motion, almost unconsciously, and he mightâve been embarrassed if he wasnât still so feverish. all he wants is to keep you close, to make the hollowness inside his chest dissipate. you always make that lonely feeling go away.
needless to say, you heed his request. almost instantly, your heart pumping in a steady rhythm, with this visceral desire to keep him close, to protect him. and who are you to resist, when heâs asking for it himself?
you waste no time crawling beneath the covers, situating yourself right next to your lover. only then do you finally, finally, reach your arms out to pull him close; so close you feel the heat of his skin, the beat of his heart. his cheek meets the softness of your chest, snuggling closer, and you card a hand through his soft locks. his arms reach around your midriff, a perfect puzzle piece, and he releases an audible sigh â deep and satisfied. in his tired, clingy state, he subconsciously throws a leg over yours, trapping you further.Â
you wouldnât have it any other way.Â
finally, satoru can fall asleep. with the fever still clouding his senses, and your nimble fingers smoothing along his scalp, the occasional kiss to his head as he listens to your soft heartbeat, heâs drifted off before either of you know it. melting into you, into your warm embrace, cheek squished against your chest. tiny little breaths fall from his lips, and you feel like youâre cradling the whole world in your arms.Â
youâre relieved. making yourself comfortable on your back, with satoru sleeping soundly on top of you, hoping heâll feel better when he wakes up. careful, even with your breathing, intent on letting him sleep. knowing he doesnât get nearly as much rest as he should, most days.Â
before long, even you succumb to the cozy atmosphere, gradually dozing off. satoru is always warm, even more so now, and his weight is comforting.
stifling a yawn, you tug him a little bit closer, allowing your eyes to flutter shut. you could use a day of catching up on lost sleep, too.
when you wake up, youâre acutely aware of something poking your cheek.
itâs a ticklish sensation, sort of irritating, and it rouses you from your cozy slumber. disgruntled, so cruelly ripped away from your sweet dreams â satoru was in it, you think. you feel robbed.
still, you canât be too mad. not when the real deal is right in front of you, eyes crinkled and full of warmth, a teasing smile on his lips. heâs still snuggled into your chest, all cozy and cute, as you lay on your back, propped up by a myriad of fluffy pillows. he looks up at you adoringly.
âwell hello there,â he purrs, shooting a giddy little grin your way. still poking your cheek. âwakey-wakey, sunshine!â
a series of blinks. you stir a little further, the sleepy haze of your brain beginning to slip off, slowly but surely. it takes a couple of seconds for you to remember why youâre here, what happened before you fell asleep.Â
â⌠hey,â you greet, at last, stifling a yawn and squeezing your eyes shut. stretching lazily, like a sleepy cat. âhow do you feelâŚ?â
âiâm perfect. better than perfect, actually,â satoru chirps, a little cheeky, hoisting himself up so that heâs hovering above you. a hint of mischief in those pretty eyes. âyouâre a good nurse, yâknow?â
you huff out a chuckle. as always, his actions reveal more than his words â you could tell he felt a lot better the moment you saw his smile, heard how he formed his words. âalright, thatâs good,â you hum, exhaling softly. âhow long was i asleep? what time is it?â
âi woke up just now, too,â satoru lies, albeit a small one. he did wake up recently, only to spend what he thinks mustâve been at least fifteen minutes staring at you until he physically couldnât take it anymore. he had to hear your voice, see your smile. itâs a personal record for him; usually he spends less time admiring your peaceful expression, far too eager to speak to you.
âitâs pretty late,â he continues, another small lie. pleased with himself. âway too late for you to go back, actually. how about you spend the night?â
another blink, your eyelids heavy and droopy as they open and close. then youâre reaching for your phone on the nightstand, and checking the time. a smile is quick to bloom on your lips, teasing and bubbly, as you tilt your head to meet his gaze.
âitâs only four, satoru.â
âway, way too late,â he only reaffirms, flopping down on top of you again, keeping you from leaving. âgod knows what kinda creeps are out there at this hour â much too unsafe. iâm just looking out for you, baby.â
âof course,â you indulge him, a sly little roll of your eyes that makes him pout. âyou know i was planning on staying over anyway, right?â
well, of course! i wouldnât expect anything less from my favorite nurse.â
his eyes betray his words, gleaming with a sudden colour of excitement, all glitter and relief. a joy that clogs up his throat like seafoam, and spills out from his lips. you look down at him, for a second, unable to resist the temptation â reaching for his forehead with the back of your hand.Â
itâs significantly less scalding, now.Â
you let out a sigh, laced with relief, one you didnât know youâd been holding in. âit really has gone down,â you hum, stretching the sleep from your limbs again. âthatâs good.â
satoru huffs. âi said i was perfect, right? donât you trust me, my sweet lover?â
âi never know with you,â you give him a huff of your own, exasperated. fond. âyou said you were just fine this morning, too.â
âi was!â he whines. piling up lie after lie. âi totally couldâve made it to that date, you know. i got worse because you had no faith in my abilities.â
âright. of course.â you shoot him a lopsided grin. âyou just donât wanna admit the fever beat your ass, huh?â
âsee? no faith.â a chuckle slips from your lips, and satoru has to bite back a smile. âunbelievable. i fought that fever off just for you, and here you are, laughing at me.â
âoh? i thought it was thanks to my top notch nursing skills?â
âwell, that too! but it was mostly me.â
a sigh. âwhatever you say.â then youâre smiling, once more, unable to help yourself. eyes crinkled at the edges, soft around the corners. âiâm just glad youâre better. i was worried.â
satoru pouts, again, but you can tell he acknowledges it â your earnest concern. this is how you love, the both of you, through words that never say it all and actions that say the words your mouths canât fit. decoding the meaning of it all in silent gestures, glints in your eyes. little truth games.
âyou really thought a lilâ fever was gonna be enough to keep me down?â he shakes his head once, then twice. and you know that what he means to say is i never want you to worry. âcâmon, now, baby.â
another lighthearted roll of your eyes. âyeah, yeah, yeah. my sincerest apologies, my strong, stubborn, totally-not-sick boyfriend.â
âdonât you mean your strong, perfect, beautiful, clever, flawless, totally-not-sick boyfriend?â
âdonât think i didnât notice you sneaking the stubborn out of there.â
âhehe.â
a silent moment passes, something tender filling up the space between your words. satoruâs weight is still so comforting, like a big blanket, his arms enveloping you as he breathes in your scent. youâre so happy that heâs acting insufferable again.
âalright, my honeybee,â he suddenly chirps, breaking the silence, hoisting himself up. âtime to go. we can still get those crĂŞpes if we hurry.â
you blink. once, then twice.
â⌠satoru.â
âyeah? whatâs up?â
you give him an unimpressed look, gazing up at him, towering over you like he fully thought youâd be alright with letting him leave. âyouâre⌠not going out today,â you deadpan. âyou know that, right?â
this time, heâs the one who blinks. once, then twice.
âhuh? why not?â
âuh, because youâre sick, maybe?â
âwhat?â satoru pretends to be shocked, offended, as if he canât believe youâd even suggest something so outrageous. âiâm all better, though!â
you raise an eyebrow, thoroughly displeased. all better? âyour fever isnât gone, satoru. itâs just not horrible anymore. youâll get yourself even more sick if you go out now.â
âi wonât! seriously!â he insists, looking down at you with a sorry attempt at puppy dog eyes. âi feel good enough to run a marathon!â
âyouâre not doing that either,â you mutter. then a sigh, exasperated. you canât let this charade go on for too long. âcome on, satoru â donât be so stubborn. we can go there another time.â
âbut ââ
âbesides, didnât you say i have to spend the night because itâs too late to go outside? remember the creeps?â thereâs amusement in your voice, a light smile on your lips. âwhat if they get us?â
âwell, they obviously wonât get you while iâm there,â he huffs. âwhat, you donât think i can protect you properly? youâre hurting me, angel.â
you bite back an incredulous laugh. god, heâs stubborn. youâre so in love with him you just barely restrain the urge to pull him in for a kiss.
âsa-to-ru,â you coo, dragging each syllable out, sending a shiver down his spine. âweâre not going outside. end of discussion.â
âwhy not, though?â he continues to pout, still refusing to give in. resorting to cheap guilt-tripping. âdonât you wanna go on a date with me? you donât want to see me happy, is that it?â
you only sigh, thoroughly exasperated, reaching up to cup his cheek nonetheless. he nuzzles into it. âyouâre such a baby.â
âyour baby.â
another sigh, to mask your adoration. at this rate, the back and forth will never end, so you scramble for solutions.
âcanât we just have our date here?â you suggest, after some contemplation. âi bought some ice cream on my way here. we could watch a movie, or something. isnât that enough?â
satoruâs eyes bore into yours. contemplative, as he lets the silence linger, gears turning inside his mind. he wants to go outside with you, wants to hold your hand and hear you hum happily as you bite into your crĂŞpe; wants to steal a bite when youâre not looking.
but it is a tempting offer. you could eat ice cream, and binge a bunch of movies, and he could rest his head in your lap. coax you into playing with his hair.
(heâs maybe, just maybe, a little bit tired, too.)
so, finally, he sighs â softly. in resignation.Â
â⌠well, i guess thatâs fine,â he pouts, allowing himself to fall back into your embrace. his voice is muffled, as he nuzzles into the crook of your neck. âi wanted crĂŞpes, thoughâŚâ
âiâll get you your crepes,â you assure him, relieved to have reached a compromise. âi can go buy âem myself and come back. then we ââ
âno, no, no!â satoru suddenly interjects. whining, tugging you closer. âyouâre not going anywhere. not without me!â
a sigh, just as adoring as it is fatigued. âthen iâll⌠order crĂŞpes, or something. or weâll eat ice cream today and then crĂŞpes when youâre better. does that sound okay?â
satoru is silent, for a while.
â⌠okay,â he hums. âthatâs fine.â
âhaah. okay, good ââ
âhowever!âÂ
you give him a look, a silent what now? that has him smiling. shuffling a little, in your embrace, planting his jaw on top of your chest and gazing up at you with a grin. âinstead of the crĂŞpes, i want a kiss.â
you blink. exasperated, as an amused chuckle follows. âso convoluted. you can just ask, you know?â you donât give him time to answer, eager to appease the pouty man. âwhatever.âÂ
leaning in, you press a chaste kiss to his cheek. sweet and soft. to your surprise, heâs still pouting when you pull away. âi meant on the lips,â he explains, as if it was obvious.Â
a tilt of your head.Â
â⌠but youâre sick.â
âso?â satoru just pouts, expression practically etched into his face at this point. âyou wonât kiss me anymore? just cause iâve got a tiny, miniscule fever?â he huffs, turning his head to the right and shutting his eyes. âif you donât love me anymore, you can just say that.â
another sigh leaves your lips. heâs so ridiculous. you canât really deny him, though.
â⌠fine. itâs your fault if i get sick, though.â
in the blink of an eye, heâs perked right back up. wagging his non-existent tail, closing his eyes and waiting for you to try again. silly.
but you relent. his lips are only slightly warmer than usual, and you choose to see it as the good sign it is, proof that his fever truly is starting to dissipate. you feel satoru relax, melting into the kiss, but before it can drag out too long youâve pulled away. ââ there. happy now?âÂ
âfor now,â he quips, equally teasing. heâs cute, though. a little kiss or two is a small price to pay for the spark of joy in his iris, even if it ends with you sick on your deathbed in a couple of days.Â
âthatâll do,â you grin, hoisting yourself up with your elbows, carrying satoru with you, his jaw still on your chest. âwanna go eat some ice cream, mr unreasonable?â
you donât really need an answer. of course satoru wants ice cream. youâve never seen him turn down anything sweet â and, lo and behold, he perks up again, getting into a sitting position. like an excited puppy.Â
âgot it,â you chuckle, stopping to think for a moment. âthereâs soup left, too. but maybe youâd rather order something? it turned out kinda so-so.â
satoru gapes. âyou kidding? that was the best soup iâve ever had!âÂ
his exclamation makes you roll your eyes, words so coated in confidence that you almost want to believe him. âsatoru. you donât have to lie.â
âiâm not!â
âyou couldnât even taste it.â
âi could, i could!â he stubbornly whines. âi tasted all your love. every single drop!â
you give him a look. he only grins at you, a little teasing, a little giddy. you canât help but feel a bit embarrassed; averting your gaze with a sharp scoff. âyeah? and how did my love taste?â
satoru leans forward. itâs sudden, and you blink, instinctively leaning back in turn. heâs wearing a signature smirk when he stops moving, close enough that you feel his breath on your skin. hot.
âdelicious,â he purrs, glancing down at your lips. blue eyes gleaming with mirth. âbest thing iâve ever had.â
you know heâs just trying to fluster you, so you try to fight against it, but it doesnât work nearly as well as youâd like â crumbling under his gaze, averting your own with a quiet huff. and he lets you off the hook, satisfied with your embarrassed expression. pulling back slightly, letting you breathe.Â
as swiftly as you can, you regain your composure. clearing your throat. âwell, you can have more of it later, then,â you make a move to get off the bed. âletâs go eat ice cream.â
after being caged in by satoru for so long, your limbs are a little stiff, caught under the weight of his boundless love. when your feet hit the soft flooring, you stretch them out, watching satoru follow your lead. still clad in that sweaty shirt.
âyou should probably get a change of clothes,â you suggest, exhaling as your muscles loosen up. âyouâve been wearing that shirt all day.â
âoh? is that an excuse to see me out of it, sweetheart?â satoru grins, fresh mischief gleaming in his eyes. âyou know you can always just ask.âÂ
you huff out a sardonic breath. âyeah, yeah, whatever. throw on a hoodie or something, weirdo.â you stifle a giggle when he makes an offended noise behind you. âand some pants.â
âyou donât like the underwear?â he looks towards the corner of the room, studying himself in the mirror. âthis is an expensive brand, you know?â
âyouâre the only person on planet earth whoâd give a fuck about underwear brands,â you scoff, a little snarky. âjust â put some comfortable clothes on, okay? iâll go get the ice cream ready.â
âwait!â he exclaims, attaching himself to you, curling his arms around your bicep. âyouâre not allowed to go anywhere without me, remember?âÂ
â⌠okay, okay. hurry up and get changed, then.â
sitting back down on the bed, while satoru walks towards the closet, you scroll through your phone â refusing to meet his expectant stare. he wants you to look over, youâre well aware, just so he can tease you for trying to sneak a peek. you wonât give him the satisfaction.
when heâs done, heâs wearing a comfy hoodie and some sweatpants. itâs a good look on him, casual and cozy. awfully cute. he wastes no time in attaching himself to you, again, an arm linked with yours as you travel to the kitchen; grabbing the pints of ice cream from the freezer, a couple snack bags from the drawers, before plopping down on the couch.
satoru maneuvers you into his lap, and you donât put up a fight, leaning into him as your back meets his chest. he keeps you locked in place, arms around your waist, planting his jaw on the top of your head. and he relaxes, comforted by your smaller body pressed up against his. holding you so close satisfies a certain protective itch in his brain, never failing to calm him down. a safe haven, of sorts.
you watch the movie and eat the snacks, chattering away, letting the silence linger every now and then. after a while, satoru gets a slight headache, resting his head in your lap and whining for you to soothe him. you do so without any teasing; youâre much too soft for him. and heâs still sick, even if heâs doing better. you couldnât resist him even if you tried.
so you opt to indulge him.
âbaby, i think my feverâs going up againâŚâ satoru pouts, gazing up at you through fluttering lashes. âcan you check?â
you smile, with a raise of your eyebrow. âthis is the fifth time youâve asked me to check your temperature, toru.â
âjust wanna make sure,â he whines. âplease?â
with an exaggerated sigh, you lean down, lips once again meeting his forehead â humming against his skin. nope, his temperature hasnât gone up. just like it hadnât gone up the last time you checked, or the time before that.
âyouâre good.â
âoh, thank god,â he exhales. âare you sure? like, a hundred percent sure? maybe you should check again. just in case.â
âsatoru,â you coo, a teasing lilt on the tip of your tongue. âyou can just ask me if you want a kiss.â
âa kiss? scandalous. i just wanna make sure my condition doesnât worsen.â
heâs grinning, and youâre rolling your eyes, and both of you know damn well youâre going to indulge him anyway. he sighs in satisfaction when he feels your soft lips on his heated skin.
âhmmâŚâ you narrow your eyes, thoughtfully, before looking down at him with a teasing smile. ânope. definitely still the same temperature.âÂ
âyou sure?â
âa hundred percent.â
âhmm. okay, got it.â he rolls over, burying his face in your stomach. wrapping his limbs around your midriff. âthatâs good. just wanted to check, you know?â
âof course.â
âmight need you to check again soon. just to be safe,â he chirps, biting back a soft grin. you donât bother hiding yours.
âgot it, got it,â you coo, fingers carding through his messy hair. âanything for my sick baby.âÂ
satoru releases a soft breath, bordering on a giggle. you canât help but let your smile grow wider, heart brimming with affection. you let it clog up your chest until the movieâs almost over, and you simply canât help yourself anymore.
âyour room is very like you.â
itâs sudden, breaking the peaceful silence, making satoru stir. youâre both starting to get sleepy again. but he blinks up at you, studying your expression before parting his lips.
â⌠oh? how so?â
âwellâŚâ you stop to think. humming, absently fidgeting with a lock of your boyfriendâs hair. âwhen i first walked in, i thought the whole house felt kind of empty, you know?â
satoru hums. unsure of where the conversation is going, maybe just a little intrigued. he mostly just likes listening to you talk.Â
âbut then i went into your room, and â it just felt very you. kinda messy, and stuff, but cozy. and a little sentimental.â satoru looks up at you, admiring that certain soft glimmer in your eyes. you meet his stare with a smile. âmaybe it doesnât make sense? i guess iâve just been thinking about it.â
he closes his eyes.
thereâs something soft in your tone, something silky and simple, and he can tell youâre being sincere. itâs something he likes about you â that willingness to be soft, almost pridefully so, to bare yourself even if you arenât sure that heâll return the favour. he likes to think itâs rubbing off on him, slowly but surely; he doesnât think heâs quite as bad as before. telling you about things that are dear to him isnât something that scares him, anymore. and even when you see him vulnerable, sick and delirious in bed, he isnât afraid that youâll use it against him.
youâre a comfort; his safe haven. a place to rest his weary head. maybe you always have been, even before he really got to know you.
âi like your place more,â he finally admits, lighthearted in its weight. your gaze flits down, but his is still lingering on the tv, not really paying attention to it. âit feels very⌠you.â
a smile crawls up to rest against your lips. playing along, your hands finding solace in between his fluffy locks. âhow so?â
and satoru smiles. eyes sparkling with something mellow, like a soda pop cracked open on a boiling summer day. he shifts a little, just to gaze up at you again. âitâs⌠homely. warm,â his smile only grows. âand awfully sentimental.â
he lifts a hand up, to touch your cheek. tender, as his thumb smooths against your skin. itâs warm, beneath his touch, heating up with every word he speaks. satoruâs love feels a little like the sun, when it spills out this fervently, like it could burn you into cinders â you think youâd be happy to lie in the ashes. heâs smiling at you, like sunshine, like little dusty specks of light. and he exhales.
âi wouldnât mind staying there forever.â
the expression on his face is a lovely one. you take a moment to simply bask in it, desperate to etch it into your memory. you donât think you could forget it even if you tried. how fondly the light of the room embraces him, that soft grin heâs shooting your way, only vaguely teasing. and his eyes, the gateways to his soul, so sincere you canât look away.
you love this man with your whole chest. you knew before, youâve known for a long time, but each day you fall in love all over again. itâs all you can think as you look at him, all snug and safe and happy in your lap.
you donât realize youâve been staring at him silently until he chuckles, pulling you out of your sentimental stupor. it only flusters you further.
âyouâre cute,â satoru croons, still cradling your cheek. tender, soft fingertips against your heated skin. all you manage is a meek little furrow of your brows, but that only makes him chuckle again.
â⌠you can.â
he blinks. still smiling.
âstay forever, i mean.â
you canât look at him, when you say it. the words are barely above a whisper, and you arenât sure if theyâre conscious or not. itâd be nice to say they just slipped out, but they feel somewhat deliberate, all the same. you know you mean them, either way. itâs the one thing youâre sure of.
this time, satoru is the one who can do nothing but stare, his expression unreadable. you try not to let your gaze wander to his face, his eyes; but through the peripheral of your vision, you feel like you catch a particular kind of sadness reflected in them. or maybe itâs something closer to yearning, longing. something like that.
â⌠well,â he finally hums, voice so low you barely pick up on it. âmaybe i will, then.â
you reach something.Â
you catch a glimpse of it, at least, for just a second or two. something warm and bare, something simple and incomprehensible at the same time. an emotion so strong it leaves you reeling, yet still so light. itâs there and then it isnât, just out of reach, and you think that if you could only find the courage to curl your fingers around his, then â
a laugh track plays from the tv, snapping you both out of your thoughts.
(the moment passes before you can fully understand it, fully comprehend it. maybe some part of you already has.)
âŚ
satoru chuckles, reaching for another ball of mochi and popping it into his mouth. âthis movieâs awful, huh?â
âyeah,â youâre quick to agree, maybe a little too quick. grinning weakly. âitâs good in a so bad itâs good kinda way, though.â
he hums in absentminded agreement, still chewing on the soft treat. keeping his gaze steady on the screen, the flicker of emotional scenes he hasnât been keeping track of, barely resisting the urge to look up at you again. but his heart already feels a little too mushy for his liking â heâs not sure he could take it.
satoru doesnât get sick often.
his immune system is strong, thereâs no denying that. but more than anything, he simply canât afford to be sick. there are people who need him, people who depend on him, and the idea of being in such a defenseless state â stuck in bed while the world continues to spin, unattended â makes him feel so anxious he could throw up. even sleeping makes him feel a little skittish, sometimes, though heâs gotten a lot better since he started falling asleep with you in his arms.
itâs funny, he thinks. before you, being sick wasnât something that really existed in his world. if he felt a little under the weather he would simply puff out his chest and down a painkiller or two, waving it off with a flick of his wrist; no biggie, really. heâs satoru gojo, after all, and the world needs his eyes on it.
but then you came along. you came to his rescue, spring in your pockets, and you took care of him, with what he knows to be love. genuine, earnest concern for his wellbeing. his happiness.
yeah â itâs funny, for sure. satoru never thought heâd ever enjoy being sick.Â
yet here he is, head in your lap, feeling you run your fingers through his hair. kissing his forehead whenever he whines, indulging his little convoluted ploys. bringing him soup, when he gets hungry again, soup you made yourself. he wasnât kidding when he said he tasted your love through it; it was all he could taste, with his numbed out senses, all he could feel.
youâre so good to him. thereâs nothing he would trade for these moments with you, absolutely nothing. heâs glad you came over, after all. glad youâre so stubborn, and oh so caring. satoru canât help but smile, heart almost stuffed to the brim with gratitude â what could he possibly do with this immense love in his chest?
âi love you so much,â he blurts out, practically beaming. now youâre in his lap, again, and he takes the opportunity to smear openmouthed kisses against your neck. delighting in the little squeak you try to muffle.
âwhere did that come from?â you blink, squirming a little in his embrace. a movie is still playing on the tv screen, one better than the last â your attention was fixed on it before satoru broke the silence.
âjust felt like saying it!â he only chirps, grinning ear to ear. âi love you. youâre the best thing that ever happened to me,â he murmurs, earnestly, lips against your skin. âmy whole world.â
for a moment, you wonder if the fever is making him delirious. then again, this is pretty standard for satoru; always eager to fluster you, to shower you with love until youâre pushing him away. itâs overwhelming, but youâve never minded. this is how you measure his love â little gaps between too much and never enough.
â⌠youâre not gonna say it back?â comes a whine, right by your ear. now heâs nibbling at your neck, little beast that he is, pouting because you let the silence linger for too long. heâs being such a baby about it. but you still rush to reassure him, echoing his words in earnest.Â
âi love you too, satoru,â you smile, slightly exasperated. craning your neck so that your lips can meet his jaw, and satoru grins, giddy at the attention. âmy whole universe.â
satoru lets out a happy little noise, almost a giggle, sleepy and pleased. his arms squeeze you just a little tighter, like you could never be close enough, even when heâs got you in his lap like this. if he could, heâd keep you there all the time. attached at the hip, close as can be.Â
even with a ruined date, even after worrying you, he feels well and truly satisfied. because you're here, and youâre watching a good movie, and youâre gonna stay over tonight. when it gets dark out, heâll get to fall asleep cuddled up beside you, hold you in his arms and feel you nuzzle into his chest. then heâll pepper your face with kisses to wake you up, and youâll grumble all sweetly, and heâll carry you to the kitchen despite your grumpy protests. youâll eat breakfast together, chatting and enjoying the way the sunlight flickers around the room like a happy cat. maybe he can even make you breakfast himself, to thank you for today.Â
if the feverâs gone by then, youâll probably let him outside. then you can go get those crĂŞpes, and maybe go to a park, or to the movie theatre, or a fun arcade, before heading back to your apartment to relax. and then heâll stay over. the day after, too. and the day after that.
living together with you wouldnât be so bad, he thinks. it wouldnât be bad at all, actually.Â
the thought has been on his mind for a while, now. getting to fall asleep with you every night, eat breakfast with you every morning, see more of your footprints in his life⌠satoru canât think of anything heâd like more. maybe heâll start hinting at it, slowly but surely. if he can lure you into broaching the subject, that would be ideal â but if he has to, he doesnât mind doing it himself. youâre worth the emotional toll.
you curl into your boyfriend a little further, his jaw now resting cheekily on the top of your head, large palms underneath your shirt and rubbing circles into your bare skin. you have no idea what heâs thinking, no idea about his plans, and he thinks thatâs for the best. he knows youâll indulge him, at the end of the day.
maybe heâll just ask you, tomorrow. if you say no, he can just blame it on the fever making him delirious.
#save me sick soft sweet sappy satoruâŚ.. save meâŚâŚ..#he means the wholeeee universe to me :â3 i love this specific toru sm !! i really do think heâs a lonely sweetie at heart :((#i wrote this fic a LONG time ago but i polished it a bunch so hopefully it doesnt feel rusty !!#i scrambled to come up w a title in time but i think this one kinda slaps idk ⌠im severely sleepy rn so it might. You panted, slightly exhausted as you reached your hand out. Using only your index and middle fingers, you gently brushed them over the line following his back. From the top all the way to the bottom, feeling his hot and sweat covered skin underneath your touch, going until your hand was resting right above his ass. There, you moved it to the side, finding a nice place to rest it and squeezing his waist with just the right amount of strengh.
And Choso shuddered and withered oh so sweetly, head pressing against the already wet pillow as he arched his back even more. Shoulder jumping upwards while his muscles tensed, trembling like a hurt animal. âDidnât like it?â You asked, reaching your hand out again, this time to stroke his black hair. His buns had come off, and it was hanging loose over his shoulders. The man beneath you didnât manage to answer your question, in contrary, he whined out, âah- aHh..! Y/n-~~ too mu- muUuchh, too faaast..!!âĄâĽď¸â
How could you expect him to even register the fact you asked him something when you are currently pounding him like thereâs no tomorrow? Like a hungry beast trying to devour him whole? Taking advantage of all his weak spots while heâs in such a vulnerable position, youâre too mean to him! âOh dear, canât say anything other than that?â You asked in a condescending tone, scraping his scalp as you held him tighter with your other hand.
âIâll help you then.â A cheeky giggle before you pulled back enough for the tip to slid out of his puffy hole, watching him clench onto nothing as a dissatisfied whimpers ripped from his throat. âNghh~ please⌠s-stick it back inââ you pulled on his fairly long hair, causing him to moan out loudly and throw his head back, âah- annNghhh.?!â Tears rolled down his cheeks, and his lips were swollen from him biting on them too much. His cheeks flushed so cutely as he hiccuped.
âSuch a needy thing, you really want to be fucked dumb?â Your grip on his hair loosened a little, and his head fell forward. He gritted his teeth, hands bawled into fists and kept right below his mouth as he sound back into the pillows, nodding furiously. âWhat a pillow princess.â You chuckled, kissing his hole with the tip of your dick. Just testing him, watching his body squirm in anticipation before pushing it all inside him with a swift movement of your hips.
That wasnât difficult at all, considering heâs been so stretched already, so good and prepared, just for you. He was so eager he basically sucked you right in, that cute little boy cunt of his fluttering around you, taking you so good. You subconsciously licked your lips at the gorgeous view in front of you. He had such a nice body too, pair that with the most adorable expression and lewd noises heâd make, lord he was exactly your type.
âAaarghhâ ⥠nnNngggâŚ!! Please, y-y/n âĄâĽď¸âĄ~?!!â The moment you re-entered him, he felt like he was in heaven. Tongue rolling out, eyes teary as he groaned, not knowing just how loud and erotic his voice was. If he knew, heâd be so embarrassed. âOh? Such a pretty sound you made there, so cute, just like a girls moans~â you hugged him from behind, head pressed against his shoulder, whispering sickeningly sweet, âshould I change to calling you my good girl?â
It took a bit until he understood your words, you helped him by slowing down your thrusts. Then his ears turned red, and he cried out, ân-no, mânot a g-girl..??â Then his brows furrowed and eyes rolled into the back of skull, al because you hit that sweet little spot inside him with such precision he was trembling all over. âAre you sure~? Donât you love it when I fuck your pussy like this?â You rolled your hips in a slow, steady motion, and it made him see stars.
God, his mind if so foggy, so mushy he couldnât handle all this ecstasy. The pleasure was too overwhelmingâŚ! And if you were to start calling him yourâ ah â your good girl too, he definitely will melt. âPlease, j-just fuck me and shut u-up..â ah, there it is, now heâs being self aware again, feeling humiliated just by having sex. Well, youâve toyed with him enough for now, havenât you? Any more teasing and heâll really come~ but the night is still so young, he still has to last for a bit.
âHaha,â you couldnât help but chuckle loudly, which only added to his frustration and excitement, then you mumbled, âwhatever for my princess.â

Misfortune Teller
tldr: An older Danny, apprentice to Clockwork, does a lot of field work across dimensions, resetting the timeline, queuing future events, and who knows what else. Occasionally, he warns people about such upcoming possibilities, to set them on the right path. How, you might ask? Well in this case... as a wandering fortune teller.
Crack-fic (oh god, it's getting long and my logic brain won't let it remain as crack) where Danny becomes Clockwork's apprentice after getting his GED. Living his infinite afterlife to the fullest. Inspired by this tumblr post.
Working for Clockwork had been... interesting so far. At first, Danny got frustrated by how vague and cryptic Clockwork was. He'd just shunt Danny off to some ancient time with a few words, his own time medallion (Danny carried it everywhere with him now), and then pop back into the portal, leaving Danny with only the faintest idea of where to go.
Eventually, after enough time (ha!) spent around Clockwork, Danny figured out that it just basically meant that he had free reign and to do whatever he wanted. Because if he went on the wrong path, (like that one time in Pompeii when he had almost caused the volcano to explode a few years too early), Clockwork would just pop on by, say another few cryptic words, and then it'd all be fine and dandy, or as he liked to say, "All is as it should be... Now stop practicing your wail by an active volcano."
After telling Jazz about that (it was supposed to be funny, not concerning), she just sighed and shook her head, with a forlorn "think before you act, Danny!" but hey, it'd turned out fine so far, so who cares how he does what Clockwork asks him to do, as long as it gets done, right? Even if it's with a liiiiitle more mischief than strictly required.
Besides. Danny was the one who had been doing time shenanigans across millennia, not Jazz. And he thought he'd been getting pretty good at it too! He'd actually started giving himself a different made-up background for each universe he visited. Sam and Tucker were helping him keep up with the identities on a spreadsheet, so if he had to go back to one he'd already visited, he'd remember who he'd said he was supposed to be.
---
He was on a call with them one evening while haunting Jazz's apartment, doing just that, when he felt a familiar tingle in the back of his throat, as well as a heightened awareness of the seconds passing by, that always accompanied his mentor's appearance.
Sam was talking about his past stint posing as a god of death when he cut in. "Hey- sorry to interrupt, Sam- Clocky's here, guys, I gotta dip."
"Aw, come on! We hardly talked any this past week since you passed your certifications, man," Tucker complained.
Danny rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. "Yeah, yeah. Partly on you too though, you've been caught up outside of class, and Sam's schedule is nearly the opposite of yours."
Sam hummed in agreement despiter Tucker's scoff.
Danny missed hanging out with them as much as they had in high school, but hey, life goes on. Or at least, theirs did, to college. After finally flunking out of Casper High, he'd taken some time to get used to his responsibilities in the ghost zone, and when he had, he realized that he didn't really have much enthusiasm or timeleft for his human life.
And he didn't really want to go back home either.
But Jazz had made him tie up any loose ends before he noped-off to god knows where, which frankly, he had to thank her for. Getting his GED took a few years, but it was an accomplishment that could be attributed to Danny Fenton, no ghostliness required. Then he was able to let that tether go free.
Pulled out of his musings by a few more grumbles from Tucker, Danny said his goodbyes, promising to call the next time they were all available.
After hanging up, Danny swiveled around, anticipation already lighting up his eyes an ethereal green.
Clockwork, for his part, had been waiting patiently through Danny's lengthy goodbyes. Although he supposed that it tracked for the watcher of time to be patient. With his job, it'd be a nightmare if he wasn't.
"Phantom," Clockwork spoke, calm as always. "I have some tasks I need you to complete as my apprentice."
And Danny, always ready for adventure, didn't need him to explain any further. "Sure! When do you need me to be?"
Clockwork smiled at that. "I am fortunate you are eager. Follow me."
---
Danny popped into existence in this universe with a burst of cold air and static electricity. He found himself hovering by a clocktower above a sprawling, gothic city. Smog and light pollution obscured the stars above him, to his disappointment. He comforted himself with the fact that he'd probably have all the time he wanted to fly someplace less populated to see them later.
He started off by familiarizing himself with the city. As he flew, he followed the trail of power and met the resident city-spirit, a spooky- but kind underneath- woman draped in black lace, who told him her name was Gotham. He spoke in length with her about this universe, its heroes, and her knights. On that, she was very enthusiastic... or at least Danny thought she was, her projected emotions belaying much more than her gloomy exterior. She told him how her knights had been through a lot and would need some guidance fighting the darkness that pooled in her deepest corners, smiling with too much glee, filling lungs with fear, and terrorizing with cold hard bullets.
Danny could sense that the dangers she spoke of were growing in power, ever slowly. The longer they shadowed people's minds and hearts, an intangible thing grew that lent them more otherworldly pull than their physical forms had right to hold.
That must be what he was sent here for.
But... they were weak, pitifully so for him, infinite king as he was. And besides, he wasn't here in that sense. He was a messenger, a simple apprentice. And he could do this however he wanted.
Cue his talk with Lady Gotham, and subsequent idea to arm her knights. With what? Well, he figured knowledge would be a start. Flying high above the city invisibly, Danny noticed a sea of colors and lights by what appeared to be the city's pier. He flew down, noting that it appeared to be the setup spot for a travelling circus or carnival of some kind.
He considered what to do. One of Lady Gotham's troubles was a madman clown, right? Well maybe he'd be attracted to his ilk here... and with the danger came the knights. Maybe he could catch one of them here?
Danny was floating around at the entrance and beginning to formulate a plan when a flyer caught his eye. Looking for a mystic to read fortunes. URGENT!
Hadn't Clockwork said something about fortunes? And he hadn't made an identity in this universe yet...
A mischievous smile crept across Danny's face, splitting it in two with far too many teeth.
---
Half a city away, a man in all black, perched on the very same clocktower that Phantom had Appeared by, shivered as he felt an ominous premonition about his sanity in the near future...
Said man quickly opened his comms to check in with his many, many kids. Yet even after hearing back from each, he still felt apprehensive.
Somewhere even further, Clockwork laughed.
---
And that's how Danny found himself seated at a fortune teller's booth at a pier in Gotham, two days later, for the Tricksy Traveling Circus's grand opening.

Meeting people 35+ participating in fandom spaces is so refreshing. Idk why, but weâve developed this hive mentality that youâre supposed to stop enjoying things once you reach a certain age. Remember that your favorite dramas, movies, comics, manga, books, anime, cartoons, etc., are written and created by people who have been around the sun for a few decades.
#letâs stop alienating people 25+ for liking what they like#those fics you enjoy so much are sometimes written by people in my age group or older#it comes with experience and age#i legit look back on some of the things i wrote when i was 21 versus now and iâm envious of who i was before but also baffled because#iâve come a long way with my experiences#that smut that makes your toes curl is written by someone whoâs aged like fine wine#that angst that squeezes your heart is written by someone whoâs had their heart broken a few times

So, for Starters: Book Of Bill Spoilers warning. Another opinion from me below. This new one is about the lost journal pages again, of course.
Originally, I wanted to make a super big crazy essay about all the reasons I think the journal pages in BOB (The Book of Billâs given name) are fake, and show off my super-cool totally completely sound deductive reasoning techniques in the process. Â
Unfortunately, knowing myself Iâm not sure Iâm actually capable of accomplishing such a feat. You all know how I tend to post things in parts, sometimes out of order, often never finished. However I would like to share something in particular thatâs been eating at me that Iâve seen⌠partially discussed, but only partially. And certainly not the part that I would like to discuss.Â
Itâs about the rats.
You know, the rats.
I saw these rats being talked about since before I was even able to have a look at the book myself.Â
But before I get further into it all, I would like to start off with a joke:Â
Why did dead rats, eggnog, a land orca, shrimp colors, Itâs a Small World After All, and an Anti-Cipherite Suit cross the road?Â
Well, thatâs easy. To get to the other side.Â
Of the book, that is.Â
If youâre anything like me, you probably skipped right to the journal pages upon contact with the book. And if youâre even MORE like me, you were probably left a little confounded by them. Not only did they seem⌠wrong somehow. But they also felt random. Full of odd choices of subject that didnât make a lot of sense. Could these pages really have come from journal 3? If so, why do parts of them feel so⌠completely out of context?Â
And this is where the rats come in. As I mentioned before, I saw many people discussing them. In particular, they were noting a connection to this passage from earlier in the book:
Many of the related discussions also felt odd to me. Though I lacked the knowledge to be able to articulate why at the time. UNTIL, I read the book for myself from start to finish. That's when I realized something: This is not the only time something from earlier in the book connects back to the journal pages. In fact, it happens many, many times throughout the earlier passages. (Here is a small collection of them for your perusal.)
And then it started clicking into place. The reasons the pages felt like they were so abnormally out of context⌠is because they WERE lacking context!
Now, before you can finish saying âGin, youâre an idiot.â I would like you to ponder these three questions:Â
1) Why, if these pages were taken from Journal 3, should they require context from outside of it to be able to be completely understood?
2) Why is it that this context can be found in what Bill Cipher has been writing in the preceding passages up till now?Â
3) If you put food in a mogwaiâs mouth at midnight EST but drive it over the CST time zone line back to 11PM before it can swallow, will it still transform into a gremlin?Â
Okay, you caught me, that third one is unrelated. But the first two I believe require further thinking. So letâs delve a little further into the idea. Consider this the real third question:Â
3) Are we to seriously believe that these, the only pages of J3 still lost to us, just so happen to tie into the new topics from the rest of the Book of Bill over and over like this? Â
And since youâve done so well thinking thus far, Iâll ask a fourth question:Â
4) Are you aware of the concepts of Watsonian and Doyalist analysis?Â
Assuming you donât and you wonât google it, Iâll skip to the important part. Watsonian analysis is to analyze a story from within it, as if you yourself were Watson making deductions in a Sherlock Holmes novel. Â
Now, from a Watsonian point of view, what happens when we try to answer our earlier questions? Why should it be that the Book of Bill provides so many of these points of reference to the journal pages?Â
One possible line of thought could be that Bill wrote the earlier passages of his book *around* the idea of what was contained in the pages, but I think this doesnât work for a few reasons. For one thing, the purpose of the book is to get the reader to make a deal, not to take a whole novel to set the stage for a 3 day mini Ford adventure. For another, not all of what I described prior is really fit to be called âcontextâ, is it? The rats, the âSmall Worldâ cassette, and the Bill-Suit are one thing, but Eggnog? Shrimp colors? Land Orcas? I certainly wouldnât define them that way. If anything, theyâd be better suited to being called âreferencesâ. And unlike the more contextual ideas, thereâd be no real need for Bill to sneak mere references to the pages into his grand story. And lastly, there are a great deal of Bill pages that have nothing to do with the content in the journal pages at all.
So what exactly am I trying to say here?Â
If we do intend to think of the callbacks outlined above as references, the only logical conclusion within the story is that the journal pages themselves are referencing back to the Book of Bill, not the other way around.
But⌠how? And why? Something Ford has written in the 80âs shouldn't be able to reference something Bill is writing post-weirdmageddon certainly.Â
Thatâs because âFordâ isnât referencing it at all!
And as for why⌠Well, have you ever noticed when you're writing a story on the fly, things you wrote earlier all come crashing back to you as you try to wrap things up? I believe personally that the journal pages are not pages actually written by Ford, but more a strange endcap on Billâs crazy train of thought! That Bill is the one writing them, and the "references" are just fuel that further the pages creation. Almost as if, to quote someone much more knowledgeable than me on this subjectâŚ
(This single paragraph has been inserted a good deal after the original writing of this post.) I would like to clarify, I am not trying to claim the ideas presented in the pages have no basis in reality whatsoever. Ultimately, what I'm saying is I think Bill wrote them, and they should be taken with suspicion instead of as complete fact. "Did this event happen exactly this way?", "Does some of this feel distorted?", "Did this part even happen at all?" I think those are questions worth examining with the events detailed on these pages.
In the end, all I've described above (as well as other aspects of the pages I've not mentioned here) leave me with the impression the pages are not real.
As I stated only a bit earlier, the idea that these pages, the only pages of J3 purported to be lost, should be so connected to the rest of the book is beyond coincidence to me. Not to mention that in order to take these pages as total truth, you must give credence to several other passages of Bill's book as well. And I'm not too keen on having to trust him that much.
To all who have read this far, even to those who may have scoffed at the ideas in here or think I've only written up nonsense. Thank you for reading and considering my thoughts.
I am not saying anyone must agree with me on this. I know some people have found the pages to be important and meaningful to them, and I do not wish to give the impression that I think my view is the end all be all correct one, or that I think lesser of those who believe them to be Ford's own writings. I only want to share my own thoughts on them. And to anyone else who found the pages to feel "off" somehow, possibly validate their feelings too.

A little touch of Miles in the night
Do you think about this Michael Sheen post as often as I do?
Cause...you can see what he meant here, right? Comparing Aziraphale (especially this Aziraphale, with this boa) to Miles Maitland. Comparing two Sheens with twenty years between them.
And it's not just a boa. They are so...them. Gayer than a treeful of monkeys on nitrous oxide. Dramatic. Flamboyant. You can see this similarity in their energy in these particular moments.
And yet...is it all? Or there is something else?
Spoilers for "Bright Young Things" under the cut. tw:homophobia, just in case.
You remember what happened to Miles in the end of his storyline? To sweet, frivolous, charming Miles?
The police got Miles' letters to his ex-lover. It was 1930s, and one piece of paper with love confessions inside could lead you to prison. So he had to leave for France to avoid arrest, without even really packing his things. And it's happened just before WW2, so his further fate in soon-to-be occupied France was...unclear, let's say that.
And you know what's happening to our angel here?
He's so silly and happy. He's spending the night with a demon he just recently realized to be madly in love with. Crowley trusts him - as he showed in another round of their peculiar roleplay. He was able to be a terrible magician for one evening. This is a perfect evening, right? He's happy and is ready to share this happiness with the whole world.
There is knock in the door. In this second Aziraphale is beaming and shouts "Enter!".
The next second the door will be opened. Hell is gonna come into the dressing room. Hell that has evidence of an impossible, criminal connection. Hell, ready to trample not only over this second joy, not just this evening - but all past and possible future evenings too. Ready to destroy all of Crowley, and with him, all of Aziraphale.
All thanks to one piece of paper.
âŚâŚ. It was good that Aziraphale knew that trick with the photograph, wasn't it? After all, he and Crowley have nowhere to run to within the confines of Earth - the jurisdiction of Heaven and Hell is somewhat wider than that of an English court.

Tender Fires
Pairing: Maximus Decimus Meridius x reader
Rating: T (hurt/comfort, angst, fluff, with a few hints of spice)
Word Count: 6.4k
Tag List: @enjisbf, @nasatshirts, @empressenchanted, @streets-in-paradise, @xiscamoony, @aelondrias
Authorâs Note: I'm back with another Maximus fic! This is actually part of a larger narrative in which Maximus escapes the execution attempt and ends up at reader's farm, where she tends his wounds and they fall in love but have to fight their feelings because he intends to leave to keep her safe. As always, this fic is written from the deepest longings of my lovestruck heart, and I hope that love is obvious :) Thank y'all so much for your kind words about the last fic, and I hope you enjoy this one!!
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~Â
âYouâre up late.â
At your words, Maximus turns his head to look at you, and a soft smile crosses his lips. His features are etched in shadow, flickering with the dancing firelight.
Heâs seated in front of your kitchen fire, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees, gazing deep into the flames as if searching for some hidden meaning within. You would never have known he was in here if you had not been awakened by the loud cracks of thunder outside and come in search of the warmth of the fire.
An autumn storm, a midnight fire, and the most captivating man you have ever known, dressed only in his plain white sleeping tunic. It seems like a combination intended to lure you into trouble.
As you move to sit in the chair beside him, he looks back into the hearth, a smile still tugging at the corner of his lips. âI have stayed awake staring at many fires in my life,â he tells you quietly, his voice deep and thoughtful.
Out of the corner of your eye, you risk a glance at him, looking for the scar on his ribs. He has been with you for a little more than two weeks now, helping you with odd jobs around the farm as his strength returns. His wounds, though still vulnerable, have healed quickly, and you are relieved to see no signs of further injury on the parts of his skin that you can see.
âAs have I,â you reply, eyes still lingering on him. âThough for me, it has always been the same fire. This one.â
He hums in response, nodding slightly. You have never sat by this fire together at night, and you are bewitched by the way the light dances over him, makes his golden skin shimmer. The lines of his arms and shoulders are limned in shadow, the firelight flickering on his handsome features.
You are overcome with a desire to put your hands on him, to feel the heat of his skin and the strength of his body, but you cast your gaze on the fireplace instead.
âI envy you that,â he answers softly, after a short reflection. He glances up at you, studying you intently. âA home fire, always burning in the same place.â
The meaning of his words is not lost on you.
Every day, the thought of him leaving you is more painful. At the moment, as you sit close enough to listen to him breathing, the thought is unbearable. Your home is his home now, and you long â more than you have ever longed for anything â for him to realize that he belongs here.
His shadowed eyes search yours a moment more, then return to gazing at the flames.
You take a deep, steadying breath to calm yourself. Your hands are trembling, and you smooth them over your skirt, hoping he does not notice how nervous you are from this simple interaction.
âTea?â you ask quickly, pushing yourself to stand and get a bit of space between the two of you.
He glances up again, and your heart clenches at the gentleness in his expression. He nods. âThank you.â
Have his eyes ever seemed so wide, so earnest? Are you imagining the way his gaze lingers on you, drinking in every detail of the way you move?
You can feel the tension in the room thickening, your own heart beating faster as you fill the kettle with water and set the tea leaves to brewing. Somehow, sharing space with this man is so much more intimate at night, with a storm raging outside and a warm fire bringing extra heat to the atmosphere.
Even more astonishing to you is the fact that you are not afraid of this powerful soldier. He is strong enough to do anything he wishes to you, to take whatever he obviously wants. But even now, standing here in your night shift, with your hair and your defenses down, you have no fear of him.
If anything, you wish he would initiate a touch, a kiss, anything that would lead to the passion that has been haunting your dreams every night.
Such as your dream last night. You can still feel the sensation of your body thoroughly tangled with his, your limbs entwined, his hands pulling your skirt up to your waist. Your cheeks burn when you remember all the places he kissed in your dream, all the places he touched and explored and pleasured. Such thoughts make you ache all over again, especially now that you are standing so close to him.
A blinding crack of lightning, followed by the roar of thunder, pulls you from the dream-memory of his mouth hot on your throat.
To distract yourself from such dangerous thoughts, you ramble on the first topic you can think of. âMy father used to tell me stories beside this fire,â you announce as you hang the kettle over the fire and settle back into the chair beside him. You donât dare meet his eyes, even as a smile crosses your lips at the memory. âI always begged him to tell me ghost stories even though they frightened me.â
He tilts his head to the side to look at you curiously, a smile of his own playing at his lips. âWhat kind of ghosts do you have in these parts?â he asks, leaning on one arm of the chair to look at you more squarely.
Somehow, having his full attention focused on you is unnerving, undoing, arousing. You can hardly find the words to speak.
His eyes are still on your face as you feel a deep blush burning in your cheeks. You hope he will attribute it to the warmth of the fire, not your intense reaction to the way he gazes at you. If he only knew how much more heated you are by his presence.
âMy favorite is the Howling Woman,â you blurt out, glad that your voice is not as unsteady as you feared. âShe wears all gray, with her head covered. Sheâs been seen in these mountains for decades.â
He does not interrupt you, but your breath catches as his gaze wanders across your face. An absent smile is still on his lips, and he seems to be content to simply watch you, to let his eyes trace the lines of your face, your neck, your hair where it tumbles over your shoulders. His gaze is searching, admiring.
How will you find the strength to hide your desire when one look from him could bring you to your knees?
Clenching your jaw and willing the kettle to boil faster, you continue your story determinedly. âThey say she was the wife of a farmer who was killed after being thrown from his horse. She found him with his neck broken.â You pause, still breathless from the effects of his undivided attention. âShe went mad and drowned her own children. When she came to her senses and realized what she had done, she walked into the wilderness to die.â
You wait for him to interject, to ask some clarifying question or comment, but he does not. He is still leaning on the arm of his chair, his dark eyes captivated by the sight of you in the firelight. You can almost sense the way he is actively preventing himself from letting his gaze wander further down â where your shift does little to hide the shape of your figure.
But somehow, his watchfulness is not an act of seduction. He seems genuinely swept up in your story, spellbound by the sound of your voice. He listens to you intently, curiously, and waits for you to continue.
âBut to punish her for her crime,â you continue, blushing even harder, âthe gods cursed her to wander these mountains and valleys for eternity, never able to die and meet her family in the afterlife.â
It is the sound of your voice, you realize now. His gaze wanders over your features slowly, as if measuring them, but his silence persists the longer you speak. It is as if he cannot bring himself to interrupt you, so captivated as he is by your voice.
âShe still walks at night,â you finish, finally allowing yourself to look deep into his eyes. There seems to be no end to them, no way to pull yourself out of the gaze that holds you captive. âShe wanders, calling and wailing and howling.â
He swallows hard, licks his lips, though you guess he does so unconsciously. A shiver runs up your spine, and not from your ghost story.
You lean forward, just an inch or so, to finish the story. âThey say you can hear her best on a night like this,â you whisper, and the silence between you is so concentrated that you feel you might choke on it.
His gaze flits down to your lips for a moment, and in this flickering firelight, surrounded by warmth and desire, you think he may kiss you.
The silence is broken by a loud crack of thunder outside, one that makes you jump at its suddenness. You both look away, realizing how intently you have been gazing at one another for an inexcusably long amount of time.
The tea in the kettle is boiling at last, and, glad for the distraction, you lean forward to take it off the fire. Your two cups are sitting on the table beside you, and you fill both before handing one to him. He nods his thanks, and the two of you sit quietly for a few moments, looking deep into the firelight.
He is the one who finally breaks the silence. âDo you believe in ghosts?â he asks softly, with that pleasant raspy quality you have come to recognize in him at night.
You smile and lean back in your chair to sip at your tea. âOf course,â you confirm lightly. âDonât you?â
His expression grows quizzical, and he doesnât lift his eyes away from the fire. He takes a sip of his tea, thinks for a long time before answering. You are more than content to sit in silence with him, but he finally comes to an answer.
âNo,â he tells you quietly, still mesmerized by the dancing flames. Eerie shadows prance over his fine features. âSpirits do not wander the earth after death. They go to the afterlife.â
His voice is calm and even, but resolute, assured. You have talked so little with him about such things, and you cannot deny your curiosity at learning more about what he believes.
âHow do you know?â you press, unconsciously leaning toward him.
He does not move for a moment, just grips his cup tighter and sharpens his gaze at the fire. âI have seen enough death to feel certain of it,â he declares, then turns his head to look into your eyes again. âIf ghosts could exist,â he tells you softly, gently, âthen I would be haunted by them every moment.â
Your heart aches for him now, for the pain and grief he carries with him always. His life has been difficult, laden with the weight of many lives and much responsibility. Even in a peaceful haven like your home, he is ever followed by the burdens of his past, no matter how much comfort and peace you have offered him.
âPerhaps they do not wish to speak to you,â you suggest, tilting your head to show that you are teasing him. âPerhaps you do not know all there is to know in the world.â
His haunted expression softens as he looks at you, taking in the meaning of your words. As before, his soft smile smoothes the lines in his face, lifts a bit of the weariness etched into his features. You canât help wondering if he realizes your effect on him, if he craves these moments of tranquility and comfort as much as you do.
âI am sure of that,â he tells you in a low voice, and your heart turns over at the simple passion in his eyes.
You lapse into silence once again, each of you drinking your tea and losing yourself in thought. Your own ponderings are of him, wondering what he is thinking. He has seemed burdened ever since you found him sitting by the fire, and you long to know what worries him.
If he only knew how your heart leaps at the sight of him, how you long to cradle his face in your hands, to kiss him until all his burdens are lifted, until all he knows is this deep, all-consuming love that has swept over your heart like an autumn storm.
The thunder continues to roll outside, the rain pelting your roof relentlessly, but the warmth of the fire and the pleasant constancy of his presence is comforting.
You do not press him for several long minutes, letting him mull over his worries in silence until both of you have finished your tea. When you set your two empty cups on the table beside you, you finally decide to inquire, pushing your chair a few inches nearer to him and leaning on one arm of the chair so you can look into his eyes more closely.
âWhat troubles you?â you ask softly, and he finally lifts his head, dark eyes burning into yours with all the intensity of the hearth fire.
His voice is hardly more than a whisper when he replies, âGhosts.â
âMemories?â you ask, entranced by the way he slowly leans forward, closing the distance between the two of you one inch at a time. Your skin suddenly burns, aching for a touch, one simple touch, that will answer your constant longing for his hands on you.
After a moment of hesitation, in which he seems to ponder the consequences of what he wants, he finally lifts one hand and trails his fingertips down the side of your face.
âShadows of things I do not understand,â he murmurs absently, and he traces the line of your jaw with fingers so gentle you cannot imagine them ever wielding a sword.
He gazes at you more openly now, his eyes traveling down to your lips as his thumb brushes over them. You suppress a shudder at the contact, and he strokes your lips a few times, transfixed by the sight, before sliding the backs of his knuckles down the column of your throat.
Stars in the heavens, if he only knew how your body is aching for him, how you respond to the slightest touch he gives you.
You finally find your voice to speak. âIs it your men?â you ask softly, as if the room has suddenly been overtaken by a spell.
He sighs, brow furrowed deeply in thought. âThey were not my men,â he replies at last, still stroking his fingers down your neck. âNot the ones who betrayed me. My men were loyal, courageous.â His voice is thick with sorrow, and you sense that recalling this memory is painful for him. âThey were my brothers,â he half-whispers. âThey would have risen up in rebellion if they had known.â
Your heart aches again at the sadness in his voice, the sadness he works so hard to disguise throughout the day. Somehow, in the darkness, in the stillness of nighttime, he seems more vulnerable.
âWhy does the Emperor want you dead so badly?â you finally venture to ask.
His hand stills on your neck, eyes not quite focused on your face. He seems to be traveling back in time in his mind, and he draws a deep breath as he thinks. Almost as if he does not realize what he is doing, his hand wanders to the base of your neck, absently stroking the sensitive skin there.
Itâs all you can do to hold still, to keep from betraying how perfectly wonderful his touch is to you.
His voice is low and measured when he answers your question. âI once received favor that he believed should have been his.â He pauses, then raises his eyes to meet yours meaningfully. âBy his own father.â
His words take you aback, and you know he must notice your wide-eyed stare. âMarcus Aurelius?â you squawk in disbelief. âYou knew the great Emperor?â
âYes,â he replies, his face softening into a smile at the memory. You are shocked by the revelation, but his fond smile warms your heart after seeing his heavily burdened expression a moment ago.Â
He presses on, though his hand is now running softly over your shoulder, skimming over the top of your thin shift. âI was young when he took me under his wing,â he explains, eyes tracing the path his hand is making on your shoulder. âI had won some small battles, and he saw in me potential for greater things. He made me what I am today.â
He strokes your shoulder once, gently, then removes his hand, as though he cannot trust himself to keep touching you there. Again lifting his deep blue eyes to meet your gaze, he looks at you so tenderly, so affectionately, as he raises the same hand to tuck your hair behind your ear.
You want to melt, to close your eyes and sigh in pleasure at his simple touch, but you fight for your composure. âHe must have been a great man,â you manage instead, meaning every word.
âHe was the greatest man I have ever known,â he murmurs, stroking his fingers through your hair at your temple now. âHe is the closest thing to a father that I ever knew.â
You have noticed how the man is drawn to your hair whenever you leave it down. He seems fascinated with it, with the way it cascades through his fingers when he cards them through it. His attentions are so gentle, so unobtrusive, as if he is unable to keep himself from simply admiring your beauty in this soft firelight.
âAnd that is why the Emperor envies you,â you observe to keep from losing your breath.
âYes,â he answers quietly, his voice hardly above a whisper. âHe believed that his father wanted to pass on his power to me.â
You nearly startle in surprise at his words. Not only the commander of the northern armies, not only a confidante of Marcus Aurelius, but the rightful future emperor himself?
You almost feel dizzy, though youâre not sure if it is from the shocking news or the way his fingers keep brushing your temple as he plays with your hair. âDid he?â you prompt him breathlessly, genuinely curious.
He ponders for several long moments, letting your hair stream between his fingers. You are entranced simply by looking at his features â his dark eyelashes, his sharp nose, the gentle creases by his mouth. He is so exquisitely lovely to you, so unaware of how deeply he affects you.
âI do not know,â he finally admits, tracing the side of your face before letting his hand fall back into his lap again. âHe never told me.â
His words silence some of the shock you were feeling at wondering if you were in the presence of a man who was supposed to have ruled Rome. The thought of this man, this humble, honest, unpretentious warrior, ruling such a corrupt and conniving empire is almost unthinkable.
You are struck by the absence of his touch, and he seems hesitant to initiate any more contact now that he realizes how close he has drawn to you. Heâs still watching you carefully, as if gauging your reaction to his touches, but you cannot resist reaching out to him now.
Your fingers seek out the necklace that hangs down to his chest, a simple cord bearing two wolfâs teeth on the end. You have never asked him about its origin. You handle it carefully, and the man barely breathes as your hand hovers over his chest.
âWhat would you have done if all this had never happened?â you ask softly, caught in the intimacy of this quiet moment. âWould you have been a soldier all your life?â
Your question is a heavy one, full of unspoken desire and curiosity. You can tell he senses that desire by the way his dark eyes burn into yours, by the way his chest rises and falls more quickly, as if you are taking his breath away just by touching his necklace.
He thinks for a few moments, still gazing deep into your eyes. âI always imagined I would die in battle,â he tells you, a hint of sorrow in his voice. âThere seemed no other fate in store for me.â
Your heart tightens, and you let go of your loose grip on his necklace. Suddenly, all you want to do is touch him, to make contact with his body somehow. His words have struck a chord in your heart, reminding you how grateful you are that this world-weary soldier has come to your home, to your hearth, instead of falling on a battlefield hundreds of miles away.
With your pulse racing, you press your hand flat against his chest, splaying your fingers over his heart. Even through the fabric of his nightshirt, you can feel his heart pounding like a war drum, perfectly in rhythm with your own.
Oh, how you long to press your heart against his, to be wrapped up in his arms, so thoroughly tangled with his body that you cannot tell where you begin and he ends.
His breath comes more quickly now, his lips parted and his eyes scorching yours with a hunger that stirs your blood.
âBut,â he begins in a hoarse whisper, his gaze flickering down to your lips and then back up, âI did imagine, sometimesâŚâ He pauses, licks his lips again, takes a slow breath, âthat if I did have a chance to grow old⌠I mightâŚâ
He halts again, his voice dying in his throat. You press your palm more firmly against his chest, and his heart skips a beat beneath your hand. You can feel his skin burning hot under his shirt.
âTell me,â you whisper, and a look of unadulterated desire flashes across his face.
He leans close to you, close enough that his breath skims over your lips. âThat I might one day have a home,â he breathes. âA family.â He sighs softly, the longing in his voice especially evident. âA life of peace always seemed⌠unlikely.â
The hesitation in his words is palpable, and suddenly his own larger hand is covering yours, pressing it tight against his chest. You realize that he is relishing your touch the way you relished his a moment ago.
After holding your hand against his heart a moment longer, he grasps your hand in his, lifts it to his lips. Your own heart skips a beat now, when he presses a slow, languid kiss to the back of your hand.
âAnd now?â you whisper, breathless and tingling with need.
He breathes against your hand, slowly and calmly. âNow,â he echoes, his voice rumbling in your bones. âNow a life of peace seems impossible.â
No. No, he cannot mean that. He cannot still mean to leave you when his gentle eyes speak of the passion he holds for you.
âIt does not have to be,â you insist, lifting your free hand to touch the side of his face. He actually sighs at your touch, his eyes fluttering closed. His lips are slightly parted, and it takes all your willpower not to lean forward and kiss him until he can breathe nothing but your name.
His eyes remain closed when he responds, your hand still cradled in his. âTo believe otherwise would be foolish,â he tells you, though his voice is anything but resolute. âDangerous.â
You stroke the side of his face tenderly, enraptured by the way he reacts to your touch. He seems so relaxed, so overwhelmed when you caress him gently. The thought suddenly strikes you that this man has probably never been touched this way â not as light as a feather, with such love and affection that he can feel it beating in rhythm with his heart.
When you brush your fingertips down his neck, over the sensitive skin of his throat, he makes a sound so soft, so unguarded, that you nearly come undone for him right there.
âAre you not well acquainted with danger?â you whisper, leaning in closer to him. He opens his eyes when he feels you drawing nearer, and his fathomless eyes lock onto yours with an intensity that sends a shiver down your spine.
You want him to stay. You want him to love you as you so desperately love him. You want him to never stop looking at you the way he is now.
And when you press your hand flat against the side of his neck, your gaze fluttering over every perfect feature of his face, his soul opens to you, and you see all the love you bear for him reflected deep in his own eyes.
âYes,â he breathes, and he leans forward to close the few inches that separate your lips from his.
The first sensation that strikes you is his blood pulsing in his neck, hammering against your hand as you caress him. His own hand tangles in your hair, holding you in place while he presses his lips against yours.
There is no hesitation in this kiss, no second-guessing or reluctance. His lips move against yours in a rhythm so natural that you wonder if he has imagined this as many times as you have.
He tilts his head slightly to the side, drowning in your kiss like a dying man seeking air. You can feel the breath knocked out of your lungs, so unaccustomed to any attention as passionate as this. The man lifts his other hand to cradle your jaw, still kissing your lips, gently but insistently, over and over and over.
This is what heaven must be like, you realize distantly when his tongue slides against yours, every inch of your skin tingling in response. His undivided attention, his unashamed desire for you is so arousing, so delightful in every way.
You can feel your cheeks burning, your skin heating up, the longer his hands linger on your face and neck. His fingers stroke your jaw, and his other hand grips your hair just hard enough to hold you in place. He is still reveling in your kiss, still using his lips and tongue to draw out the softest moan you have ever made in your life.
As soon as he hears it, he moves his lips to press against the corner of your mouth, much as he did the first time he kissed you in the barn. He trails his lips down your jaw, peppering kisses on every inch of skin he passes.
Thoroughly excited by his kisses and touches, your mind is all too eager to provide any number of tempting images. When he dips his head to one side, lips touching the place where your jaw meets your neck, all you can imagine is the careful way he would undress you, lay you down, and make love to you, slowly and gently but passionately.
He drags his lips down your neck, his curious tongue coaxing another soft sound from you. Again, your mind flashes to all the ways he might use his tongue on you, all the places he could seek out and tease until you are so dizzy with pleasure that all you can say is his name, over and over.
Another press of his tongue, and it takes all your strength not to beg him to take you right here. You can imagine it so easily, the way he would grip your waist, your hips, the way you would wrap yourself around him and touch every inch of his bare skin if he would only give you the chance.
What would you not give to see him shudder in pleasure, to throw his head back and hold you tight as you cling to him and make him feel the same thing he ignites in you?
Itâs at that moment that he whispers your name, tenderly, reverently, like a prayer, against the soft column of your throat. Your whole body shudders in response, your hands tightening where they have landed on his broad shoulders, and he finally fulfills what you have been aching for.
One strong arm wraps around your waist, the other around your upper back, and in the space of a breath the man has pulled you against him, leaning you to the side so that you are cradled in his arms across his lap.
You are suddenly very aware of how thin your shift is, of the way he must be able to feel every curve of your body pressed against him. His fingers are gentle where they wrap around your waist, and you feel with heightened awareness all the strength of his own body, all his powerful muscles and vigorous energy.
All you can do is sigh in pleasure as he keeps his head buried in your neck, still kissing your sensitive skin as though he cannot get enough of you.
You can barely take a breath, so overcome with the multitude of sensations he ignites in you. His hand flexes against your waist, and you respond in kind with your fingers digging into his back.
You have the distinct impression that the man is having to physically restrain himself from going further, that all he wants to do right now is yank open your shift and kiss his way down your bare body. As irresistible as that thought is, you let him take the lead, and he chooses to simply kiss you rather than ravish you.
He is a noble man, a man of honor, and though your body is aching for him to truly make you his, you take pleasure in his self-control, his respect for you.
His fervent kisses to your neck finally slow, and he breathes against your skin as though trying to memorize you. When he nuzzles his face against your neck, all you can do is close your eyes in absolute ecstasy. One of your hands finds its way into his hair, and itâs his turn to shiver with pleasure, pulling you even closer against his body and resting his lips against the curve of your neck.
He goes still in your arms when you stroke his hair, slowly and tenderly with your fingertips. Again, you are struck by his reactions to your gentle touches, by the way he melts into your arms as though overpowered.
Several long moments are spent in that position, with you cradled against his chest, his face against your neck. You would be content to stay like this all night, just listening to him breathe, feeling his heart beating against your side.
But the moment passes, as all moments do. Another crack of thunder shakes the house, and you canât help but jump a little in his arms.
As if pulled out of his daze, the man smiles softly against your neck, strokes your back soothingly in a way that only serves to make you arch your body against his. A moment later, he lifts his head from the crook of your shoulder, letting his face brush against yours as you disentangle yourselves.
Though you have just spent the last few moments passionately embracing and kissing, and though both of you are still flushed and breathless with exhilaration, the following moment is not awkward. You do not look at each other as you part, but you can sense your own relief and contentment in him.
You do not know what will come of this. You do not know if he will stay much longer. But in a moment like this, with your lips still swollen from his kiss and your skin still burning from his touch, you feel as though no heartbreak can be as vast as this perfect fulfillment you feel with him.
You stand slowly, glad that you are not as unsteady as you feel, and you lift the kettle off the fire just to have something to do. You can feel the manâs eyes on you, though he does not speak.
âIt is a fierce storm tonight,â you comment, almost without realizing that you are speaking. The silence between you was comfortable, but you long to say something, to know that he is still at ease with you.
He takes his time in responding, especially since you have your back to him. âYes,â he says simply, his voice deep and husky.
Stars, how you want to hear that voice in your ear, in your bed, murmuring to you while you both reach the height of your shared pleasure.
You swallow hard to banish your intrusive thoughts. You move to set the kettle down in your cabinet and scramble to think of something else to say. Rain continues to pound against your roof, sending a slight chill through the air despite the warmth of the fire.
âWill you be warm enough tonight?â you ask over your shoulder, still conscious of his eyes burning into your back.
Again, he takes his time answering. âYes,â he finally replies. âWill you?â
You let the question hang, still standing with your back to him. You hope he can understand your wordless answer, especially after sharing such an intimate moment.
The only warmth I crave now is the heat of your body against mine.
Still trying to avoid meeting his eyes, you half-turn to pick up your two empty cups from the table. Doing so makes you lean against the side of the little square table, and you notice with great surprise that it does not tilt dangerously to the side as it has for the last several months.
The table legs are perfectly even now, and you suddenly raise your eyes to look at the man squarely. He is gazing at you with the oddest combination of expressions â desire, contentment, admiration, sorrow, longing, affection, and several others you cannot name.
âYou fixed my table,â you observe, genuinely struck by the kindness of his simple gesture. You donât know when he did it, but sometime in the last few days he must have noticed the unsteadiness and taken the time to fix it somehow.
He holds your gaze for a long moment, and a small smile tugs at the corner of his lips. âIt needed fixing,â he replies simply.
Your heart leaps into your throat, though you canât say quite why. Despite the fact that just a moment ago you were wrapped up in his arms, sighing while he covered your neck with kisses, you are much more affected by his modest demonstration of kindness â fixing something of yours that was broken.
âThank you,â you tell him softly, returning his small smile with all the warmth blossoming in your heart.
You finish your task, setting the two cups in the cabinet to be washed tomorrow. The storm outside has quieted somewhat, but you can still hear the constant pounding of raindrops on the roof and walls.
Quiet thunder rolls in the distance as you turn to look at the man again. He is still seated, leaning forward with his knees on his elbows, gazing at you curiously.
This is what you want: this man in your home, always, sharing your fire, sharing your space, looking at you as if you hold his heart in your hands.
The words spill from your lips before you can consider them. âMy father always told me that a storm can make a person change their mind about anything.â You hear the significance in your own words, and you press on anyway. âHe said itâs in their nature to bring about transformation.â
The manâs darkened eyes do not leave yours for a moment, and you hold his gaze steadily, wanting him to hear your unspoken plea.
Stay with me. Let me love you as I do in my dreams.
His face does not betray any decision, but his gaze is tender, filled with a weary longing. His eyes explore each feature of your face as gently as his fingers did a few moments ago.
âPerhaps I will listen to it for awhile, then,â he murmurs, and your heart sighs.
All is not lost. You must simply wait.
As you start towards the doorway that leads to your bedroom, you pause beside his chair. The man is looking up at you with eyes that melt you to your very soul. Overcome with your affection for him, you lift one hand and stroke the side of his face, smiling down at him fondly.
âGoodnight, general,â you whisper, and your heart whispers, Beloved.
Before you can drop your hand, the man wraps his fingers around it and brings it to his lips. An unhurried kiss to the back of your hand, one that sends another shiver down your spine, and he releases you. His eyes burn into yours, intense, ardent, yearning.
âGoodnight,â he whispers, and your heart hears his whisper, Beloved, long after you have slipped into the next room.

Light's relationship with his father is such a heartbreaking multi-faceted tragedy to me I hate it so so so much.
Soichiro loves his son so much, and while he's certainly not a perfect father I know that he cares deeply about Light. He wants to prove Light's innocence so badly but he can't let go of the underlying doubt that he might really be Kira and it gnaws at him. He does not know that from the very beginning he was being used by Light, whether it was to obtain information about the investigation, or to get to L, or to strengthen the foundations of his own lie that he wasn't Kira, this entire time he was simply another resource. He'll hang onto this doubt for years, even after L is dead, even if he doesn't express it in the latter half of the series, until he himself is on his deathbed, with what he believes to be undeniable proof that Light isn't Kira. (It's a lie, of course.) He dies happy, but it's on the foundations of blissful ignorance. His own son brought him here, brought him to the point where he had to sacrifice half of his own remaining life span, to his own death march, and was still trying to use him even now to kill someone else, but he doesn't know that. Soichiro said that what was evil was the power to kill others, and that whoever used it was cursed. Light was that cursed man, of course, and he tried to bring that curse onto Soichiro too by making him kill in his last moments. Soichiro was happy regardless, because he didn't know. He'll never know. (In the manga/anime at least. More on that later).
Light loves his father but it's not enough to turn him away from the terrible decisions he's made, if anything it only fuels them. His idea of "justice" is a twisted model of what he parroted from Soichiro, and he uses his father as another pawn (and a powerful one at that) in his plans. If he can prove that Kira is justice then perhaps his father will no longer call Kira, and therefore Light, evil, so he just needs to ensure that Kira becomes justice, right? It's Light's own actions that land his own father in the hospital for a stress-induced heart attack and yet he says only a few minutes later that he's the happiest he's ever been in his entire life. Even after Soichiro denounces Kira by calling him evil, even after he calls the Death Note's power evil, even after he unknowingly tells Light that he is cursed. When Soichiro dies Light is too deep in his own plans to actually properly process the fact that his own father is dying past what it means for his goals, but at the same time he still cares enough that after the fact he'll genuinely cry, only to brush it all away later. (Personally, I don't have a single doubt in my mind that Light's crying in that scene was genuine and I Will die on this hill). Soichiro had unknowingly denounced Light one last time just before his death, openly relieved that he "wasn't Kira after all", which also reveals that he has had doubts about Light this entire time, even after L died. By the time he's caught at the Yellow Box Warehouse Light will have denounced his father too, seeing him as someone who was made to be a fool, someone who was naive, even, too earnest for his own good. He won't realize that part of this description of his father might have applied to Light himself, back when this all started. Light takes after his father so much in so many ways already, so why not in this way too?
Ough. And honestly the other adaptations never miss out on this tragedy either, and I love them for that. (spoilers for the musical and 2006 live action movies I guess?)
In the musical we see Soichiro express his doubts and conflicts about who to believe, Light or L, if the son he raised really is a murderer, if everything he knows about him is just a lie. Like, there's an entire song about this, and you can tell how torn he is about it all, how badly he wants Light to be innocent but about how he also needs to face the truth no matter what it is, but at the end of it all he doesn't even get the answers he wants. At the end of the musical the only thing he finds is two corpses, Light's and L's, with no answers. No last words, no closure, only dead ends and a dead son and a grieving daughter. It's so awful I hate it here.
And the live action movie is fucking Insane. Like, wow. Okay. (Spoiler for the ending of Death Note The Last Name I guess) In the 2006 movies/novels Light writes Soichiro's name in the Death Note himself, and it's such an inconcievable move that it leaves even Misa shocked; Light tries to make Soichiro give him the Death Note for the last part of his plans, seeing his death as a "necessary sacrifice" (insert tangent essay about why I think 2006 live action movie Light is actually the most "coldhearted" Light Yagami, despite how infamous anime Light is). It doesn't work, and Soichiro does end up finding out that Light is Kira this time, and they have a confrontation, but he doesn't even sound truly hateful towards Light for it. He Never seems to outright hate Light for it, even after Light calls the whole confrontation a waste of time and instead tries to continue killing with the piece of the notebook in his watch, even after he tries to get Ryuk to kill everyone. When Ryuk inevitably writes Light's name and he collapses, Soichiro still reaches out for him and holds onto him as he's dying. Light literally dies in Soichiro's arms, still looking for the validation that he was right, that this wasn't all for nothing, that he was doing the good thing, trying to make Soichiro understand that he was trying to enact justice based on what he learned from him in the first place. Soichiro not only learns but sees for himself what his son has become, and Light dies in his arms leaving no closure for either of them. Soichiro will announce Light's death in L Change the WorLd on the news without saying his name, saying instead that it is only Kira who is dead, even though he and Light are one in the same. Sachiko and Sayu will never get to know the full truth about what happened to Light, instead Soichiro will lie and instead tell them: "Light was killed by Kira."
And then holy Shit the jdrama. If I write about it here this post is gonna literally double in length and also I don't really wanna spoil it but. Man. Man. If you watched it you know. Holy Shit dude I Cried.
It's the fact that, canonically, Soichiro will die oblivious to what Light has done, but even in the instances where he does find out, it doesn't make it any better, and it doesn't make him love Light any less, it just gives him more to grieve.
It's the fact that there isn't a single universe where Light doesn't use his father for his own gain, whether to gain information, or to try and control him with the Death Note, or make him write in the Death Note himself, and not a single time will he realize just how far he's strayed from Soichiro's ideals, and not a single time will he not forsake him for it by the end of the story.
It's the fact that, despite everything, Light will always refers to Soichiro as "dad/my dad" (informal) rather than "father/my father", even after he has been "denounced" (and this is true in every language that Death Note has been translated in, as far as I could find. Man, isn't that so cool! :) <- Through tears).
Anyways that's what I've been thinking of how's your guys' days going

Cheer up prompt #27
An anon and @this-was-a-terrible-idea also requested #27! A popular number apparently lol. I hope you all enjoy! âĄ
"--and then Mr. Browsten said that with all the, um, the hullabaloo that it wasn't fair to make us take a test, so he cancelled it."
Tim pauses for breath and Mom hums an encouraging noise. When Dad makes that sound, it means he's not really listening, but he knows Mom's paying attention, even though she hasn't stopped curling her hair. From where he's lying on her bed, he can see her reflection in the vanity mirror, and she's frowning just like he knew she would.
Mom doesn't approve of canceling tests, which means she doesn't approve of Mr. Browsten, because he cancels them all the time.
(Mom says tests are important to know where improvement is necessary. Mr. Browsten doesn't seem to agree.)
"So we watched a documentary instead and it was pretty interesting, it was about puffer fish! Sarah asked what puffer fish have to do with grammar and Mr. Browsten said that learning is its own reward, but I think he just didn't have anything else ready so he took something from Ms. Cappola instead. She's the fifth grade science teacher and I heard her classes watch movies at least twice a week."
Mom tuts, which Tim was expecting, and sets down her curling iron.
"Ridiculous," she mutters. "I don't know why we're paying that school so much in tuition when they can't be bothered to teach you anything. It's a miracle you ever learned to read."
"It's because I'm smart," Tim informs her helpfully, and Mom smiles her special just-for-Tim smile.
"You are," she agrees. "And thank goodness for that. Now, would my smart boy do me a favor?"
Because Tim's smart, he already knows what she's going to ask. He rolls off the bed to his feet. "Curling iron?"
"Yes, please." Mom rolls her chair away from the vanity so he can crawl under it to unplug the curling iron. She plugged it in herself, but that was before she was all dressed up in her expensive dress. "Thank you, Timmy."
"You're welcome," he chirps, crawling back out.
Mom rolls back in front of the vanity, but Tim stays where he is, kneeling next to it so he can watch her put her makeup on. There are a lot of different bottles and brushes and powders involved, but Mom never hesitates. Tim doesn't know how she keeps it all straight.
He likes watching Mom get ready to go out. Sometimes--like tonight--she lets him pick out the jewelry she's gonna wear, and then she chooses her dress and hair and makeup all based on what he picked. Even when the colors don't match, it all fits together like a puzzle...a puzzle she pieces together in seconds after Tim's impulsive choice.
It's really cool.
Tonight, Tim picked pretty, dangly earrings with some kind of red stone (ruby, Mom said when he asked), so Mom picked a black dress. She said it would make the earrings pop, which he didn't get until he saw her wearing it.
Now, he watches her choose lipstick as red as the earrings and asks, "Does the lipstick make the earrings pop, too?"
Mom finishes smoothing it on before she smiles at him. "You tell me."
Tim studies her. The lipstick matches the earrings, but it doesn't draw attention to them the way the plain dress does. He already watched her do her eye stuff, and her eyes look bigger somehow, but they're not colorful like they were when they all went to the opera last week.
"No," he decides. "You went new...neutral?" He waits for her slight nod of confirmation, then continues, encouraged, "You went neutral with your eye stuff and red with your lipstick to make your lips pop."
"Very good," Mom says, smiling. She cups his cheek briefly before turning back to the vanity. "Clever boy."
Tim beams and watches in fascinated silence as she uses some kind of powder. Even though he's staring right at her, he can't tell what the powder actually does. All he knows is that when she's done, her face looks...different. Still pretty, but kinda sharper somehow.
Makeup is like magic, he decides. No matter how many times he watches her get ready, he can never figure it out.
"Can I try?" he asks impulsively.
"Try what?" Mom asks, a little distracted. The cap on one of her bottles is stuck and she's struggling to open it.
"Your makeup!" Tim takes the bottle from her and opens it by using the hem of his shirt to grip it better. Mom can't do that, her dress is all shiny and slippery. "You look pretty, I wanna try."
Mom pauses and then smiles.
"I don't have long before I have to leave," she warns him, "but I don't see why not. Do you want to pick out some lipstick?"
Tim absolutely does. He levers to his feet as, across the room, Dad finally stirs. He's been reading some stuff his assistant from Drake Industries brought by earlier, ignoring them both, but now he says, "Janet" in a weird tone.
"Jack?" Mom asks, even as she directs Tim's attention to the little circles on the bottom of her lipstick tubes that show what color they are. She has a lot of options.
"Janie, really," Dad says. He sounds unhappy, and Tim looks up from comparing two different shades of pink to find him frowning. "You can't mean to let our son--"
He stops mid-sentence and Tim bites back a wince. Dad's in trouble; Tim hasn't seen that look on Mom's face since he told her about his last nanny giving him whiskey to help him sleep when he woke up from bad dreams.
"My son," Mom says very deliberately, "is welcome to express himself however he likes."
Is trying makeup expressing himself? Tim just wants to see if it makes him as pretty as it does Mom.
Either way, that's not a good tone. Tim looks down and concentrates really hard on picking out a lipstick.
"Janet," Dad tries again, weakly. He obviously knows he's in Big Trouble, but for some reason he hasn't apologized yet. Tim tries to psychically tell him to cut his losses and back down, but his telepathy apparently still hasn't kicked in, because Dad says, "It's just that--"
"Do you know what you want to try, sweetheart?" Mom asks, completely ignoring Dad.
Tim looks between his parents, decides to let Dad dig his own grave, and hands Mom the red he settled on.
(If it's the red that most closely resembles the red in Robin's uniform...well, it's not like Mom has any way of knowing that.)
"Excellent choice!" Mom says. She stands up from the vanity and pats her chair. "Take a seat."
Tim does, excited. He's not usually allowed to sit at Mom's vanity.
Lipstick, he learns quickly, feels really weird. He has to sit super still while Mom puts it on him, and it makes his lips feel weirdly heavy, like there's something on them.
Which there is, actually, so...he doesn't know what he was expecting.
Mom hands him a tissue so he can "blot" his lips, just like he's seen her do a million times, and then steps aside so he can see his reflection in the mirror.
"Whoa," Tim says, leaning closer. He makes a few faces, pushing his lips together and out, transfixed by how bright and noticeable they are. It doesn't make him pretty like Mom, but he likes how it looks anyway. "Cool."
Behind him, Dad throws up his hands and leaves the room. He's angry, Tim can tell, but Mom is smiling down at him, so Tim's not worried.
"Do you want to pick eyeshadow next?" she asks.
"Yes, please!"

"glimpse of us"
pairing: zhongli x reader
genre: angst, no comfort
w/c: 850
summary: "glimpse of us" by joji, but you are not her
You have been through everything with him. Through the archon war, through the cataclysm, through the ongoing erosion, and through the âdeathâ of Morax. You wanted to think that you were the closest person to him. You knew all of his likes and dislikes. You knew what all of his hobbies were. You knew how much he cared about his people, the people of Liyue. You understood him more than anyone.
âMy dearest and oldest friendâŚâ Zhongliâs deep voice rumbled through the plains of Liyue, like a gentle breeze that could soothe even the most unfortunate of souls. âMy y/n⌠You have truly proved yourself to be my most loyal companion. I was once an archon, and now I am merely a man, yet you love me anyways, and it has taken me this long to realize that. Will you accompany this old soul for the rest of his modest life?â
When he had proposed to you, you felt like the happiest person in the world. The man who you had been in love with over the last thousands of years had finally realized your feelings, and you were ecstatic. But despite his whispers of love to you, despite all of the passionate feelings that he vocalized, there was always a lingering thought in the back of your mind.Â
Indeed, you knew everything about Morax. Even his heartaches and troubles. Even his old love who he lost many, many millennials ago.
The death of Guizhong broke your heart as well. She was loved by many, that included the Geo Archon himself. You didnât think your unrequited love would ever be returned, and yet, you still somehow felt guilty now that youâve taken the place of your old friend, the one who used to stand by his side.
He had never once looked at you the way that he looked at her. He had never once smiled at you the way he did her. And even at night when he dreams, he dreams of her.
But you smiled on, hoping and wishing that Zhongli would be happy by your side. Minutes passed like hours, as you kissed his lips, and hours passed like seconds as you laughed by his side. But you knew that you were just her replacement. You knew that whenever he looked into your eyes, he was not looking at you, but instead at a glimpse of her.Â
âI love you, Guizhong,â Zhongli had let out one day. Whatever you had in your hand had fallen to the ground at the time, leaving a loud thud amidst the silence. âNo⌠No, I meant y/n. I love you, y/n.â Zhongli was flustered, which was unlike him, and also quick to correct his mistake, but it was too late. You had already found out about his true feelings.
He chased you outside as you ran straight into the rain, calling your name and asking you calmly to come back inside. You didnât know how to feel. You didnât know how to react. You just knew that you could no longer face him. The thunder roared loud in the sky as your heart ached.
Your fears were confirmed that night. You had never seen Zhongli look so desperate and scared before. It was like he knew what his true feelings were, but he just didnât want to lose you. The damage, however, had already been done.
He held you in his arms tightly, catching you before you got too far, your back against his chest.Â
âY/n,â he pleaded, âplease⌠come back inside. Itâs raining and youâll get sick.â
âItâs been thousands of years, Morax.â Zhongliâs grip tightened as he heard your firm voice, as if he was afraid heâd lose you like how he had lost everybody else in his life. âIâve always been yours⌠but when will you ever be mine?â
âI apologize. I truly am sorry. It was a slip of the tongue.â But he couldnât deny the truth. You had hoped he would say that you were the only one in his heart right now. That you are the only one he thought about. He remained uncharacteristically silent but still clinging onto you.
It was time you put yourself first for once. Everything you had done had been for him, the man you love. But his silence spoke louder than his actions in this case, and it cracked open your heart even further.Â
âI think⌠we need a break. Iâm sorry.â
There was a long pause before Zhongli let you go.
âVery well,â he said hesitantly and cautiously. âI cannot force you to stay. But remember this, I truly love you. And when you would like to speak again, I will be here waiting for you.â
âUnfortunately, Iâm tired of doing the chasing,â you said simply.Â
âThe chasingâŚ? Oh, my dearâŚâ You couldnât look at his expression, but you could tell he finally understood your feelings. Still, he hesitated to say what he truly wanted to say, a long pause between his words. âIt appears I cannot convince you to stayâŚâ
âYes. Goodbye.â
Zhongli watched as you walked away. The light of his life had faded, and now, he truly was all alone.
#i'm sorry everytime i listen to this song i think about zhongli#ik this is like the common trope with zhongli angst but i couldn't help it#zhongli x reader#zhongli x reader angst#just a blurb i wrote a long time ago#angst#genshin impact angst#genshin impact

Welcome Home
Pairing:Â Dylan O'Brien x Reader (Female) Synopsis:Â Traveling. Any annoying but necessary part of any actors job for the non-traveling party. But the welcome homes? They are oh so fucking sweet. Tags:Â it's filth with some cute plot, shower sex, kisses, more banter than is reasonable in polite society Rating:Â Explicit (obviously) Authorâs Note:Â Y'all listen. I know. Okay. It's been a while, and to be honest? I started this in fucking January, but hey. It's here now, right? We're all chill? No one's upset? Good. LOVE YOU!
Heâd been away for days, but it felt like weeks. Your feed has been covered in photos of him. The algorithms have you pretty much figured out. Youâd been keeping up with his interviews, watching clips of his adorably awkward award acceptance speech. It wasnât a surprise award, but it didnât matter that he was prepared for it. He was incapable of being acknowledged for his achievements without turning into the equivalent of a turtle hiding in its shell. Youâd have reached out to hold his hand and ground him if you could, but youâd been here. Alone. Missing him. But all that was soon to change.
He was on his way home. Annoyingly, his flight had been delayed, but as you stared up at the JFK arrivals board and it read: âArrivedâ, you couldnât help the bubbling up of excitement and giddy nervousness. It seemed like Tony was picking up on it as well because he stood against your leg, pawing at your thigh until you picked him up. Heâd been missing his dad and had taken more comfort in your presence since heâd left.Â
Your ears perked when the announcement that the baggage from his flight was about to begin its rounds through the baggage claim area. Your phone vibrated in the thigh pocket of your leggings. You gave Tony a quick squeeze before setting him back on the floor and taking your phone out. You smiled at the preview of the text youâd just received before you swiped to see the rest.Â
âYour fine ass better be waiting for me down there.âÂ
You smirked before typing out a teasing reply.Â
âGot stuck in traffic a few times but Iâm here. I hate Newark btw.âÂ
You watched the dots appear and couldnât help the audible laugh that escaped when you read his next message.Â
âNewark!?âÂ
You interrupted him with a quick âIâm joking!!!â before you could see what he was typing next. Then after a brief pause, the dots reappeared before his reprimand.Â
âYou know youâre this close to the find-out stage of fuckin around?âÂ
âOh? What if thatâs exactly what I want?âÂ
âđâ
âNot that I want to rush through the fuckin around part đâ Â
âIâll be taking my sweet fucking timeâŚdonât worry.â
You startled at his audible reply and your eyes shot up from your phone and met his as Tony pulled at the leash in your hand to reach him. He looked a bit tired but happy. His smile was wide across his stubbled face, quirking up at the corner when you smiled back.Â
âHey buddy!â he said, handing you his pillow before bending down to scoop Tony up into his arms. âI missed you!â he swooned in the adorable baby voice he reserved for his furry son. âDid you miss me too?â He rubbed Tonyâs head and then his tummy. âSuch a good boy!âÂ
You smiled at the two of them, pulling Tonyâs leash from your wrist and handing it to Dylan. Tony would be stuck to him like glue now.Â
âHey, baby,â he said softly before he leaned forward and pressed a kiss to your lips. One just long enough to make you the tiniest bit dizzy and eager for more.Â
You blinked away distracting thoughts. âDo you have much luggage?âÂ
Dylan shook his head. âJust this,â he said pointing at his backpack, âand one bag on the turnstiles.âÂ
âShould be over there, they just announced it,â you said, taking a few steps toward the baggage claim area.
âNice!â he said, hiking Tony up onto his shoulder a bit before he followed after you.Â
His bag passed in front of him and he hefted it off the belt and popped out the handle and you took it from him so he could focus on the excited ball of fur in his arms. You set his pillow on it and wheeled it behind you toward the cab that was waiting out front. As much as you hated early morning airport runs, you were glad his 4 AM delayed arrival made the whole airport experience a lot smoother. Fewer people. Less traffic. Youâd been able to get in and out without so much as a sideways glance from anyone else.Â
âHey you,â he said as he slumped in the seat next to you, Tony taking up the little bit of space between you.Â
âHey,â you said, smiling back at him.Â
It was just after 5 AM and youâd only gotten a couple hours of sleep. Originally, he was supposed to have gotten in at midnight and had been scheduled to arrive at Newark, but his flight had been canceled. When he called you to let you know, you were already getting ready to catch the Uber youâd called to take you to the airport. You had a habit of being too punctual. But that also meant that you had a hard time settling and only managed a short nap before you got up to head to JFK. You were a bit tired, but feeling his warmth next to you for the first time in a while was enough of a comfort to fight off the droop of your sleepy eyes. You wanted to see his smile, the upturned tip of his nose, the lopsided smile he sported as he pet Tony. Sleep could wait.Â
The drive back to the loft was rather uneventful. Traffic was light, you werenât sure youâd ever made it the Carey Tunnel faster than you just had. When you hopped out of the car, Dylan gathered his bags from the back of the car and you headed up to the apartment. Home. It was always a comfortable place, but it was warmer when he was in it.
âSmells nice in hereâŚâ he said with a sigh, closing his eyes for a moment as his shoulders sagged in relaxation. âI missed it.âÂ
âAnd I missed you.â You stepped into his space and wrapped your arms around his waist and he quickly pulled you to his chest, looping his arms over your shoulders and pressing a kiss into your hair.Â
âYou did, huh?â he chuckled, the heat of his exhaled breath warming your skin.Â
âMhmâŚâ you hummed, laying your cheek against his chest. The loft was dimly lit by a single lamp near the sofa in the living room and the streetlights that filtered in through the large windows. It added to the comfort you felt in his arms.Â
âI missed you more,â he whispered.
âImpossible.âÂ
He sighed out a long breath, holding you tight to his chest before he pulled back, his hands clasped around your waist, eyes locked to yours. The warm, honey-brown hue of them sent a shiver down your spine, of course, it didnât help that heâd begun to work his hands under the hem of your shirt, his fingertips pressing just a little more firmly into the bare skin covering your ribs when he leaned down to kiss you.Â
His lips were insistent, the kiss at the airport clearly not satiating the need that had built during your time apart. It was a comforting reminder that his infatuation with you must be at least somewhat comparable to your own.Â
You moaned when his lips wandered along your jaw and latched to your throat just below your ear. Not to be outdone and wanting a little audible thrill of your own, you were satisfied at the deep groan that emanated from the back of his throat when one of your roaming hands slipped down between your bodies to graze across the front of his thigh until it was cupping him through his sweatpants.Â
âDefinitely missed that,â he breathed out across your collarbone before pushing your hair back and sliding the collar of your shirt aside to access more of your skin.Â
You laughed softly before it morphed into a half-whispered moan of his name when his teeth grazed along the sensitive skin above your breast. âFuckâŚâ you breathed, squeezing your hand around him eliciting an appreciative grumble from him that you felt vibrate the aching bit wet skin heâd been sucking on your chest.Â
When you released your grip to slip your hand behind the waistband of his sweats, he grabbed your wrist. âNot yetâŚâ he chuckled when he pulled back to see you scowling at him. âDonât worry,â he said, smiling at you, brushing an errant hair back from the place where it hung in your eyes, âIâm gonna make you screamâŚâÂ
You swallowed thickly.Â
âIâd just rather not reek like a man whoâs known only seat 23A for 10 hours when I do it.âÂ
You chuckled softly. âWellâŚâ you smiled back before reaching both hands around behind him, âthen you better get this,â you squeezed his ass, âfine thing in the shower then.â You gave him a gentle spank.Â
He laughed and pressed a kiss into your hair. âThirsty little monster,â he said, running his hand down your arm. âJoin me?â he said, pleading gaze meeting yours.Â
You nodded and he took your hand, lacing your fingers together and leading you through the apartment toward the bathroom. The gentle squeeze of his hand in yours sent a satisfying ripple of warmth through your body. Just as youâd made it through the door to the bathroom, you tugged on his hand and swung his body to pin him against the counter of the vanity.Â
He let out a soft huff at the gentle impact and smiled down at you as you grabbed at the hem of his shirt and yanked it roughly up over his body. His bare chest heaved as your eyes roved over him, your hands following your gaze across his pecs, through the soft hair, down his abs, settling on the waistband of his sweats before you began to crouch in front of him as you slid them down his thighs to pool at his feet.Â
You looked at him from between his thighs and watched as his brown eyes turned near-black, crouching there longer than was necessary to achieve the task, fluttering your lashes at him.
âFucking teaseâŚâ he muttered under his breath before he hauled you up in front of him and stripped your top off, tossing it across the room before he latched onto your throat and bit down.Â
While you writhed in his arms, his hands warmed up your back until his fingers worked open the clasp of your bra. He slipped his fingers under the straps and slid them free of your shoulders and let the garment fall to the floor.Â
âMmmâŚâ he mused, looking down at your chest before he leaned forward and captured your lower lip between his teeth and pulled it back slightly before releasing it to kiss down the column of your throat. He cupped you breast and brought his lips to the peak and flattened his tongue in a wide sweep before sealing his lips to suck your nipple until it was taut and pebbled.
âDylanâŚâ you groaned, your hands tangling into his hair.
He held you against his body and swapped your positions until your lower back was pressed against the vanity. He nipped at your chest before he finally pulled back and lifted you to sit on the counter in front of him. He quickly unbuttoned your jeans and pulled them from you, throwing them into a heap with the rest of your discarded clothing. Then he slotted himself between your thighs. âShowerâs right thereâŚâ he titled his head in its direction, âand yet here we areâŚâ he smiled, his fingertips trailing down from your arms, along your ribs and waist until they teased at the elastic of the last piece of clothing you were left wearing. Â
âHere we areâŚâ you repeated, looking down your body at his hand as it slipped into your underwear. You fell forward into his chest when you felt his teasing, barely there touch where you were now aching to feel it. Your sharp intake of breath didnât go unnoticed.
He leaned in and grinned against the skin of your throat before pressing an open-mouthed kiss to the tendon running the length of it. âSomething wrong?â he teased, still not touching you the way you wished he would.Â
âPleaseâŚâ you whispered.Â
The little amused noise he made only frustrated you more, because Instead of giving in to your need, he hooked his fingers around the band of your underwear and stepped back from you to slide them free from your legs. He twirled them around his long index finger before letting them slip out of his hands to the floor. His eyes roamed over you, exposed to him now, perched on the counter. âFucking perfectâŚâ he breathed, giving his head a slight shake.
You flushed under his attentive gaze, your own eyes catching on the obvious sign of his own interest tenting the front of his boxer briefs. âTalkinâ about yourself?â you finally managed.Â
He smiled and shook his head.Â
âYou should beâŚâ you sighed, âbut you could stand to be just a bit more nakedâŚâ you pointed to his underwear.Â
He laughed. âFair,â he said before turning around to turn on the shower. He looked back at you, smirking as he hooked his thumbs in the band of his boxers. When he slid them down his thighs the need you felt for him was almost unbearable. He held out a hand to help you down. âTime to get you wet,â he said with a smirk.Â
âToo late.âÂ
His brows shot up his forehead. âFuck⌠meâŚâ he muttered
You stepped past him, your hands gliding over his naked torso, and into the shower. âThatâs the plan.âÂ
He followed after and closed the door, the glass quickly began to fog with the steam as you stood under the spray of the faucet. Even though you knew the water was hot, it almost felt cool on your heated skin. Dylan watched you as you ran your hands over your body before he reached out, gripping your hips. He shoved you back against the wall and his lips crashed into yours.Â
You reached up clasped around his neck, your hands tangling into the wet strands of his hair, deepening the kiss and tasting the faint hint of mint on his tongue. His teeth grazed over your bottom lip, pulling it taut before he kissed along your jawline.Â
He muttered something unintelligible under his breath against your throat.
âSoapâs over there,â you sighed, jutting your chin to the shelf in the corner.Â
âRight⌠showeringâŚâ his teasing mouth paused and he pulled back from you. âYouâre so fucking distractingâŚâ he groaned, his grip on your hips shifting to your ass before he squeezed it in both of his palms.Â
You grinned and wet your lower lip with your tongue.Â
âNot helping.â
You laughed before you pushed him away enough to grab the body wash from the shelf and squeeze it onto his loofa. âLemme help then,â you said, gesturing for him to turn around in front of you, the water now striking him in the chest.Â
He didnât protest, and quickly spun around as you took a small step closer, so your wet body was pressed briefly against him before you began to scrub his shoulders and upper back.Â
âMmmâŚâ he hummed, rolling his neck.Â
You tickled him enough to raise his arms so you could wash them both thoroughly. You smiled watching him noticeably relax his shoulders. You washed down his back, sliding the loofa down to the dips in his low back and over his perfect ass.Â
âTaking your time back thereâŚâ he chuckled.Â
âStop having such a nice ass and maybe Iâd make quicker work of it.âÂ
He shook a bit with a contained laugh. âNoted.âÂ
You finally relented, taking one last look at his soapy cheeks before you reached around to scrub his chest and stomach, not spending too much time before reaching down and squeezing the loofa at his belly button and letting the soap begin to run down his body. Your free hand followed after it until it was teasing at the coarse hair, brushing just where you knew he was dying for you to touch him.Â
âRelentless fucking teaseââÂ
You cut off his complaint by wrapping your hand around his sudsy length and pumping him just once. âYou were saying?â you breathed against his back before you kissed his shoulder blade before you pumped him again.Â
He groaned, his head falling forward. âIâll shut up⌠just donât fucking stop.âÂ
You beamed with pride. It wasnât like he never begged, but it was far less common than your own pleadings that more frequently bounced off the walls of this room. You rewarded its rarity by picking up the pace with your hand, pinning him against you with the other hand pressing against the front of his thigh, the loofa long forgotten at his feet.Â
He stuttered forward, one hand coming up to hold his weight against the tiled wall the other grasping gently at your wrist, not stopping you, but guiding your hand. âFuck,â he cursed, the last consonant of it coming out shuddered and low.
You were growing more and more impatient with each second. The ache between your thighs was forcing you to squeeze them together for some kind of relief. You moaned in frustration, your pace faltering.Â
Dylan squeezed your wrist and stilled your hand. âSomeone sounds needyâŚâ he whispered, pulling your hand free of him and swapping your positions. He pressed you back against the wall and grabbed your body wash from the shelf, squeezing some into his palm.Â
You watched him warm his hands together, lathering the gel into foamy suds in those gorgeous fucking hands that you knew he was about to touch you with.Â
He smirked at the audible sound of you swallowing before he cupped one of your breasts, his other hand snaking around you, his fingers teasing the dimples of your lower back. He pinched your nipple between his thumb and forefinger, his nose nudging your chin up enough for him to run his tongue up the length of your throat before he kissed you.Â
Your heart hammered in your chest, your skin pebbled with goosebumps, your body sang under his touch. Youâd missed him. God, how youâd missed him. It should be against the Geneva Convention for him to be away from you this long. Torture, pure and simple. But this? This was as close as you could imagine to what it might feel like to be moments from dying of thirst in a vast desert only to stumble into the cool waters of an oasis.
He slid his hand down your body and, without a hint of teasing or pretense, rubbed your clit with the pads of two fingers.Â
âHoly. Shâ!â you cussed, only getting half of it out before it devolved into a strangled moan.Â
Dylan nudged at your chin as your head lolled in pleasure, his lips skimming across your skin, breathing out praise as he continued to swirl his fingers over the sensitive bundle of nerves that had you writhing against him. âMissed the way you soundâŚâ he nipped your neck, âthe way you feelâŚâ he groped at your chest again with his free hand, âthe way you tasteâŚâ he kissed you again, his tongue demanding entry into your mouth.Â
His talented fingers had you approaching the edge, that warm feeling building up inside you, that pressure that made you feel like you were electrified. âDyl⌠pleaseâŚâ you softly begged when he gave you a moment to finally breathe.Â
His lips slipped from yours, your noses touching, both of you panting in the same air. Then you whined when you felt his fingers disappear from you. He stepped back into the stream of water and pulled you with him, kissing you everywhere his lips could reach as the hot spray of the shower rinsed you both clean of suds.Â
You looped your arms around his neck and he gripped the backs of your thighs, hauling you up so you could wrap your legs around his waist.Â
His eyes were wide with the same wonder he somehow still held for you even though heâd had you so many times there was no way to keep count. It made you feel warm and wanted. Desired and beautiful. Â
âCould stay in this shower for the rest of my fucking lifeâŚâ he said as he pinned your back to the wall and bucked up against you, slickening himself in the folds of your body, driving the head of his cock into your already sensitive clit.Â
Your eyes rolled back at the contact, your hips rocking forward to meet the roll of his. âWeâll⌠weâll get all pruneyâŚ.â you finally breathed out.Â
He laughed against your throat before he kissed, nipped, and sucked what you knew would be an impressive little bruise into your skin. âSo be it,â he said, and then he shifted his hips, met your gaze, and slid into you to the hilt.Â
The stretch, the fullness, it was almost as shocking now as the first time youâd felt him buried inside you. It was perfection, blissfully indecent perfection. You moaned his name, your fingernails clawing at his shoulders as he began to set a punishing pace, driving up into you hard, rutting his body against yours enough to stimulate you in just the right places, inside and out.Â
âShit!â you swore, letting your head fall back against the tiled wall.Â
He fucked into you over and over as you felt yourself edging closer to the brink. You felt your thighs begin to shudder as his pace grew more erratic an unpredictable.Â
âSo fucking tightâŚâ he groaned before he kissed the valley between your collarbones.Â
The strangled need in his voice, the feel of his breath against your skinâall of it coupled with the delicious way the end of his length was pressing into that perfect spot inside you that made you feel like you were losing touch with realityâyou were ready. âFuck, DylââÂ
He raised one hand to press on your chin enough to force your gaze back to his, the pad of his thumb dragging across your lower lip.Â
You moaned and flicked at it with the tip of your tongue. âIâm so close⌠please!â you begged.
He drove his thumb between your lips and when you sucked it into your mouth, he slipped the hand on your thigh between your legs to rub his finger over your clit just when he drove a final thrust against your g-spot.Â
Youâd had your fair share of fantastic orgasms at this manâs hands, literally, but this one was up there standing proudly on the podium collecting its medal. It was a rush of pent-up need and desire that washed over you like a crashing tidal wave. Every single cell in your body felt like it was vibrating with pleasure. Your muscles clamped down on him as you felt him join you in his own release. The feel of him spilling into you, the sound of your name falling from his slack lips, making it all so much more intense. It was perfection. Pure and simple. Absolute. Unadulterated. Bliss.
Your chest heaved against his, both of you softly laughing between kisses before you felt him slip free of your body. His hands warmed up your arms before they cupped either side of your neck.Â
âI love you so fucking much.âÂ
You smiled at him, leaning in to run your nose along his throat until your lips were at his ear. âI love you too.âÂ
He sighed and his lips found yours, but he held back from the kiss long enough to speak. âHell of a welcome home.âÂ

Can't believe this writer is trying to argue the problem with the show is that it isn't treating the main villain like a one-note, simplistic character and this is somehow too confusing because viewers won't know he's the villain despite all the villainous things he does like murder, manipulation, gaslighting, and orchestrating the complete destruction of an entire Elven realm. How media illiterate do you have to be to think exploring a villain's motivation in some way constitutes trying to trick the audience into think he isn't really a villain?
#rings of power#trop#lord of the rings#lotr#sauron#some many âThis is what is wrong with this showâ article are just the most banal things I have ever read#the wrote point they are trying to make is that because the ending is know#the show is bad for taking it time to get there#that it is bad to try and flesh out the story and characters and it needs to be more simplistic to get to the ending quicker#it is the same old nonsense said about any prequel#that because we know how it ends there's no tension#shit like that#which no one ever makes about stories based on real life#no one ever said that about titanic even though we all know the boat will sink#trop is trying to take a timeline and turn it into a drama#but surprisingly many just want an enactment of the timeline#they basically want the fellowship prologue in long form#which would be boring
