Things to keep in mind while writing a south asian character-
(Since I'm a mixed south-north indian and a hindu-sikh I've mainly included details about indian-hindu characters(ill try to include more abt sikh characters aswell)tho ive tried to include as much info as I can abt other south asian countries aswell !also ,if you want, feel free to add more details in :)
And please forgive my grammar in some of these places XD
1.The most common one,of course being that south asia is not all india.countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri lanka,Bhutan etc exist to.
2.Religion tends to be a big part of many south asian people’s lives , and If not a big part of their life, than most south asians are atleast religious in one way or the other.Different religions are in majority in different regions of south asia. For example,Sri lanka is majority buddhist, mainly in the sinhalese majority while the tamil minority there is majority hindu. But it's more than valid if ur character is atheist to tho!
3.For indian characters specifically ,it's is important to know what state they are from and that state’s culture . For example, most (or almost all)tamil characters won't wear a salwar kameez.(if they do then mostly muslim tamils)(reminder;I'm talking about traditional wear. Yes a lot of Tamil's could wear a salwar kameez if they want but it is not the traditional dress of tamil nadu)
4.India itself is very diverse,so don't make every character hindu.in some regions one religion is more in the majority than the others. If you decide to make a christian-indian character ,than they usually are from south-west india and north-east india.
5.If you decide to make a hindu-indian character as maybe a marvel/dc oc or something , its best to do some research on hindu stories and history.trust me,it helps alot. If not a hindu character than do research on the folk tales of that characters region,as that can help to.
6.NOT EVERY INDIAN SPEAKS HINDI.INDIAN/HINDU ARE NOT LANGUAGES.istg please . All it takes is one search of your characters state and the states description almost always mentions the state’s official language.while some character from non Hindi speaking areas of the country, for example a malyalee person could know how to speak hindi (most probably by living somewhere like delhi),they would still talk in malayalam with family and stuff . Also a pakistani character and Hindi speaking indian can almost always communicate easily since since the most spoken language in Pakistan,Urdu is very similar to Hindi in sound(also a lot of indians, specifically muslim indian’s have urdu as their first language.)Also punjabi Pakistani's and Indian's don't have any problem in communication(the script they write punjabi in is different tho)Also since a lot of people from the north had their ancestors migrate from pakistan to india during partition regional languages of Pakistan such as sindhi, multani, balochi etc can be understood by some people of such descent living in India. And a bengali speaking indian and a Bangladeshi can communicate just as well.Nepali speaking indians and Nepali people can also communicate with each other. But when it comes to Sri Lankan tamil people their dialect is different than the one of indian tamilians,so their tamil is better understood by malyalees, but they can still communicate well enough with each other.afghan people speak pashto and dari.pashto is also understood by a small amount of ethnic pashtuns who live throughout the sub continent.People from the Maldives speak the language of dhivehi.
7.Indians overall have many festivals that all people of usually a certain community celebrate regardless of religion, caste, etc. For example ,the people in kerela celebrate onam.Infact in alot of the state’s people from a specific region have their on festivities.
8.Physical features vary from area to area of South Asia.So there is no definite“south asian“look.
9.Sikh’s don’t cut their hair , that’s why most Sikh women have long hair and most Sikh men wear turbans. Although some do, like my uncle from my mom’s side and my mom herself and etc. Though socially it's more acceptable for a sikh woman to cut her hair then a sikh man. But a load of times sikh immigrants do have to sadly cut their hair and take off their turbans in order to get jobs and all.
10.-And Hindu’s don’t eat beef. Most Sikh’s and overall all Indians tend to avoid beef to.a lot of Hindus are vegetarians due to religious beliefs. Tho mallus and some people from the north east for example usualy do eat beef(mainly the non hindus)
11.-For characters specially from south india(that to mainly kerala and tamil Nadu) the naming tradition that is used most commonly is that the child and wife use the father’s name as their last name. Though I've noticed that outside of their states atleast they tend to use their family names, but very rarely caste names.
12.- Believe it or not, in a show( I'm not sure about the name) a pakistani character had the name“shiv reddy“.pissed me of sm.yes pakistani hindus exist but if I havent already mentioned before,CERTAIN LAST NAMES BELONG TO CERTAIN AREAS. Reddy is an indian telugu hindu last name.please do your research.
13.-This applies to a good amount of north indians and just overall non south indians.south india is not one state.madras was the OLD name for Chennai, which is just one CITY in one state of south india. There are 5 states,6(and more) languages spoken. Please do not confuse those cultures.
14.-As for a good amount of non punjabis...please.punjabis are not all “balle-balle“ sikh people.please. And they're not all angry people looking for a fight either.
15.-Talking abt north india,I need to mention bollywood and how they stereotype.bombay aka the film city is in Maharashtra.yet they still stereotype Maharashtrians as poor people.gujjus are always the rich snobbish ppl.bengali ppl are sweet shy people and nepali people are Chinese. Goans are always english speaking drunkards or high attitude aunties.rajasthanis all have a heavy accent and are royalty and Uttar pradeshis-biharis are poor illiterate people. PLEASE STOP WITH THIS STEREOTYPICAL BULLSHIT ISTG. See,stereotypes exist because they are true, but only a part of the truth and over exaggerated asf.
16.-India does have a poverty issue but we are far from a third world country.most indians are middle class, that to is split in between lower middle class, middle middle class and upper middle class.and until or unless you live in a rural area casteism really isn't a problem.but remember, while casteism is illegal in indian law,it still affects people.it’s just a little less prevelant in big cities. While india is the farthest ahead in south asia atleast the rest of the countries are doing well for themselves as well.
17.-hindu culture specifically has so much lgbtqia+ stuff in it.but the fucking brit’s and Mughals ruined it. The only transgender festival of Asia is held in tamil nadu.seriously, I advise you do research of your own on it and you'll love it to!♥️
18.-Btw, hindi is a language, hindu religion. (had to add this again)Your character prolly from some place like madhya pradesh, bihar,Uttar pradesh,Delhi, uttarakhand or himachal pradesh if they are hindi speaking. Some people have the same confusion with malayalam. Malayalam is a language, malyalee’s are the people who speak it or at from kerala.
19.-talking about food.curry is a wide ass term.wdym by curry?fish curry, mutton curry or is it paneer curry?is it more creamy or not?do you eat it by itself, with rice,a paratha/parotta or all?like seriously stop with “curry“ ITS ANNOYINGGG.again food varries alot area by area.even in a specific area food varries. For example,Kerala-Tamil nadu sambar is damn spicy but sambar from karnataka and telugu states tends to be sweeter.also food from Karnataka is much milder in spice then food from Andhra, but still capable of burning the mouths of most non south asians 😍😘🥰.also,we tend to eat most of our food with hands(THE best way.)famous delicacies vary from country to country in south asia and area to area of india btw. And our food is not ’smelly’, it's FRAGRANT.
20.ok so ive in total had 2 specific segments dedicated to language and this is the third one.India, while having only 22 offical languages(again;i remind you,we do not have a national language)actually has like thousands of languages. Native people from even just one state can have different mother tongues(for example-three people who were born and raised in karnataka and have families that are native to the state could have the languages of kannada, tulu and kodava as their mother tongues). And again, dialects also differ. For example,Bombay hindi and the hindi of a person from Uttarakhand would be different, and so would Bangalore tamil and a Madurai native’s tamil. Also, let’s say a telugu person has been living in mumbai for a while, very rarely will they ever have an ’accent’ while speaking hindi or english.
21.so above i mentioned that alot of people from the north have had ancestors move in from pakistan during the partition(and vice versa for some Pakistani's).Similarly,a good amount of people from west bengal had their ancestors move in from bangladesh(and vice versa again, but unlike the north india-pakistan thing indian bong’s and bangladeshi people don’t exactly have that ’divide’).Adding this in specifically not only because of how important this is but it can give more depth to your characters if they are from any of these areas.
22.Every state has different art forms.be it dance, music or just art, every state has it different.India has 8 classical dances(bharatanatyam, kuchipudi, mohiniyattam, kathakali, oddisi, kathak, manipuri and sattriya) and has countless many more.Music also varies and so does art as i said above.
23.our culture is super feminist but fucked by the brits and mughals again. We had so many queens and princesses that fought wars and also many female warriors. In the ancient times women only wore single drape saris and didn’t cover their breasts because they were not seen as sexual, but infact as a sign of motherhood(and there forth strength). If they were covered,it was for support.
24.Most people know atleast 3+ languages and almost everyone knows 2 at the very least. Sometimes they can even understand(which can range from basic to great) some other languages. For eg.- my dad can speak english, hindi, telugu, konkani, tulu, punjabi, urdu and multani+ he can understand malayalam, kannada, sindhi and tamil well enough.
That's it(for now):) hope this can help.feel free to ask questions!+random songs from my playlist✨✨✨
(ps,check this post of mine out cause y not lol)

Ok I feel like writing a long essay on Indian elections so I'm gonna do just that. Full disclaimer though, I'm just airing my thoughts out and I'm just as much of the general public as anyone else. In other words, I'm not a social scientist. While I welcome healthy discussion, if I don't find the strength in me to answer to a certain reply, I simply won't and I hope you understand and forgive me.
With that out of the way, I'm coming out of my optimism bubble to take a stock of things. At this point (6:19 am IST), the counting has been done. It's apparent that BJP did not win the clear majority they were hoping for. In fact, they could only get about ~36% of the total votes, which means majority of seats in the Lok Sabha belong to parties that are not in the BJP. This is a huge deal, despite it being apparent that NDA WILL make the government and by extension, Modi may get elected for PM for a third term.
However, there's the matter of how tightly knit the NDA itself is. At this point NDA holds 292 seats. If JD(U) and TDP (i.e. Nitish and Chandrababu Naidu) flip, NDA loses 16+12 seats leaving them at 264 seats, i.e. below the 272 mark. If only JD(U) flips, they are at 280 and a majority and if only TDP flips, they are at 276, still a majority (See ECI's website for seat tally by party). While all hinges on what Nitish gets offered today and what conversations Chandrababu Naidu has in Delhi today, neither have given conclusive statements towards their intent, and on the contrary, TDP seems to be leaning towards staying in the NDA. For the current government to truly fall, BOTH TDP and JD(U) will have to fall out of the NDA, which is a very optimistic outcome and seems unlikely.
Let's consider both outcomes actually, I wanna do a thought experiment for myself to see how things would turn out if NDA forms the govt vs if INDIA forms the govt.
Option 1 : NDA holds the majority and forms the govt
Very likely Modi will come back for a third term but now there's a sizeable opposition majority in the Lok Sabha. And if systems work the way they should, this should at the very least provide some friction to motions BJP has had ease with passing in the past decade.
Certain ministries will probably be given to non-BJP members. As someone from Bihar I know for a FACT that Nitish is going to push for Something Big. I'm not going to make any conclusive statements about Nitish or Chandrababu Naidu or idk, Chirag Paswan taking up a ministry, but that is a possibility, for better or worse.
Depending on whoever takes up whatever ministry, if the core of the polities remain what the current BJP govt has executed, not much may change. Privatization of telecom services leading to death of BSNL and MTNL to death of Doordarshan/rise of sold out and censored media to increasing gas subsidy to tanking the value of the Indian Rupee, or literally any aspect of daily life that the current government made us used to like slow boiling frogs, may just remain the same or change veeery slowly. Since BJP is at the core of the NDA and still has a sizeable presence, this remains the most apparent possibility.
I do think the divisive, supremacist politics might deescalate. Not because BJP or NDA are going to be soooo nice all of a sudden, but because this election has shown that it clearly doesn't work. Eg: Manipur used to be a BJP stronghold. From 2007 to 2015, I have been in close contact with Manipuri friends who really believed BJP had potential to do great things for Manipur. And yet here we are. They instigated communities that were coexisting for ages to fight, left a trail of blood, ruined people's lives, and even lost the state. Also bringing Manipur in as an example because what happened in Ayodhya is already a national joke at this point. Modi almost lost Varanasi. If there's any lesson to take away from these experiences, it's to cut back on divisive politics.
Option 2 : INDIA forms the govt
I'm actually not sure who the PM would be. Rahul? Akhilesh? I actually don't like the alternative of Akhilesh being a PM tbh. His failure to understand the needs of the people in 2010s is what paved the way for Yogi Adityanath to win UP. Not that Yogi did a great job and solved everything, but BJP's whole pitch in 2014 was that they were coming in as 'underdogs' to throw out dynastic politics like the kind SP or INC play. Which of course, is a fucking joke seeing that Chirag Paswan or Pradyot Manikya Deb Barma (a literal prince!) are in the NDA this time, but I digress. I was in Varanasi at the time when Akhilesh was the CM of UP and he was pandering at best! I vaguely remember the biggest news was him giving laptops for free to girls who graduate from the state board but that was all! He was passive and BJP+Yogi took advantage of that! Rahul poses a similar issue, but I am overall just worried about whoever ends up as the PM, would perhaps be more of a figurehead than holding together a strong opposition, and that would mean an NDA/BJP opposition would eat them up for breakfast.
When you speak with people who are in denial of media being sold, their counterargument is almost always 'there were so many scams on the news before 2014! Now there are none!' Well, yeah, cause news media is a literal joke now. But they aren't wrong about the scams either! The thing is, there is next to no politician in the current political landscape who isn't a slave to power. Corruption won't go away. Scams won't go away. But will the media actually report them when people in power are involved in it? I'm actually not sure anymore......
Which also makes me think of how much will things actually change? And who will change them? Listen, I grew up in 90s and 2000s Bihar under the Lalu regime as a minority middle class with two state govt office workers for parents. 'Don't trust anyone in power' is in my DNA. I have also seen Nitish flip the landscape of Bihar and bring in resources we'd never even imagined. But core problems still stay. From casteism to corruption to infrastructure issues to brain drain, all issues remain. Simply using Bihar as a toy model, I lose hope of any rapid progress even under a drastic change of leadership. While it would be certain that this government would be Left-Center, I would be highly skeptical of whether or not they'll scrape all right wing policies. Not to mention Amrit Pal won?? Shiv Sena is in power??? Yeah it's a much more complicated and treacherous path up ahead, even if this option may be the most optimistic alternative.
This election was an important one. Preceeding this were whole movements (eg : farmers protests, CAA/NRC protests, etc), a pandemic that brought forth gaping holes in the health infrastructure, agitations that shook entire regions, and that's only scraping the top of the public outcry against the current government. In a democracy, riots, protests, movements are as much a voice of the people as votes and clearly these manifested as votes in this election. While this election day was extremely entertaining and the memes are fun, I do want to remind myself and others that communalism, casteism, regionalism, religious bigotry, corruption, and partisanship aren't simply going away. It will take work to undo things and even more work to right the wrongs that have been around since wayyy before 2014. But I do hope this is the beginning of something positive 🤞🤞

Jodhpur – Top Experiences in the Blue City
Rustic and appealing with a tiny speck of chaos – This is how I would describe JODHPUR, the famed Blue City of Rajasthan. The city welcomes you with pretty lakes, vibrantly painted lanes and iconic monuments. At the same time, stray animals wandering along the streets and cacophony of honking vehicles trying to make way through the dusty alleyways are also quintessentially Jodhpur. This striking contrast is probably the reason why the city still maintains its primordial charm. And as you start settling in, it wraps you in its cocoon of colours and warmth.
Tempted to visit Jodhpur? Here is our list of top experiences in the Blue City.
Best Time to visit Jodhpur
November to February: The climate of Jodhpur is normally hot and humid. So winter months are the best time to visit the city. Day time temperature is pleasant during this time and great for exploring. Mornings and evenings are cold. Expect more crowd as this is peak season.
August to October: During or just after the monsoons is also a great time to visit Jodhpur.
How to Reach Jodhpur
Jodhpur has a domestic airport which is well connected by flights to/from major cities. The airport is around 5 kms from the main city area.
The city also has a major Railway station connecting to a number of Indian cities by train.
Many Volvo and Deluxe buses also ply from Delhi to Jodhpur on regular basis.
Things to Do in Jodhpur
Mehrangarh Fort
One of the largest forts in India, Mehrangarh Fort is the focal point of tourism in Jodhpur. Perched on a cliff high above the city, the fort radiates unrivalled splendour. The huge almond coloured fort may have a rugged exterior, but its interior is as exquisite as it could be. There are expansive courtyards boasting of elaborate stonework and stunning rooms that are sheer manifestation of opulence. Where Sheesh Mahal amazed us with lavish mirror work, Phool mahal won us over with its vibrant motifs, dazzling ceiling and stained glass windows.
Once you complete exploring the fort complex, head towards the back gate (exit gate) of the Fort. The compound outside the gate offers panoramic views of the city including the blue houses. We recommend to time your visit in a way so as not to miss the magical sunset from this point. Be awed by the city bathed in an orange hue at one side and the fort shimmering like liquid gold at the other.
Jaswant Thada
A sublime marble structure set beside a bluish fresh water pond and rimmed by the city walls – Jaswant Thada is a beauty that is not to be missed. Resembling a temple from outside, it is actually a cenotaph that was built in the memory of the late King Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. Since then the area around the Thada has been used as cremation ground for the Kings and the members of the royal family. So you will see a lot of small cenotaphs around the main structure sitting amidst the impeccably manicured garden.
Many people might tell you that Jaswant Thada is just a place for a quick visit and few pictures. But if you are an architecture enthusiast or a nature lover, then we recommend spending an hour or two at this place. Visit during early morning hours when other tourists have not arrived and you will be surprised how much the place has to offer. Take your time to relish the intricate marble carvings and designs all around the structure. Inside the thada, check out the distinctive marble sheets on the walls that emit a warm glow in sunlight like they are ablaze inside. As you come out, do not forget to stop by the exceptionally skilled local artist playing musical instrument in tune with the folk and famous Bollywood songs.
Bishnoi Village Tour
Jodhpur’s real charisma lies in its villages. If you are interested in having an insight in to the rural life and witness the work of its local artisans, then opt for the Bishnoi Village tour. This tour usually consists of a jeep safari, visiting houses of different local artisans and a delectable home cooked meal at a local’s house. There are many operators who provide half and full day tours. We chose a half day tour with Mr. Chhotaram Prajapat who hails from one of the local villages. And this became the most memorable part of our entire trip.
Driving through the dusty roads in an open jeep, we entered into the rural hinterlands of Jodhpur where everything looked so different, so magical. The arid landscape was peppered with large Sangri trees and was brimming with wildlife. We spotted deers, nilgai, peacocks and many other colourful birds up close. But the highlight of the trip was spotting the gorgeous blackbucks playfully running around in the open, in their natural habitat. The next part was visiting the houses of different local artisans. It was amazing to witness the fine block printing work, the delicate art of making earthen pots and dhurrie making. Read More…..

OKAY I have a rant.
So about 2-3 years ago, I got really interested in all those study and productivity videos on YouTube. Because they make it so aesthetic and so appealing to have the utmost productivity and have goals that you work towards, I wanted to try it all too. I even made a Studyblr. If you are here, you already probably know that.
I fell into this trap of wanting to wake up early, have a healthy breakfast, go for a walk, meditate, then sit down to do my work, to plan my day and work according to my plan.
But it was very difficult to actually have that life that Studytubers have. You see, most of these people lived alone, whether in an apartment of their own or in college/uni. They lived their life according to their whims and fancies, they did what they wanted to do at any given point of time. Their life was entirely in their hands, they lived for their own selves.
I lived at home (of course, I was still in school). I could not eat what I wanted whenever I wanted, because my mother is not my personal maid to be doing things as I wish. I could not go outside to walk in a park, because unfortunately I don't live near one and my parents were never gonna allow me to just be walking on the streets of Delhi. I could not plan my day and then follow through with that plan entirely, because something or the other always came up- some guest showed up, dad needed help, mom needed help, my sister needed help, somebody needed the room that I study in for other purposes. And everytime my plan was disrupted, I would get more and more frustrated. (Of course, I had never shared my plan with my family so its not their fault for asking me to do something when they don't know that in my head I have decided that I will be doing something else at that point.)
It took me quite a while to realise what the problem here was. All those people on YouTube were living either in America or Europe. Those are all individualistic cultures. For anybody who doesn't know, individualistic cultures are those where the self is seen as more important than the society/community. I live in India, and like most Asian nations, we are also a collectivistic culture, which means we give more importance to the society than the self. This brings about various major changes. I will give you an example from Psychology because I just studied it. In a research it was found that Japanese and American students associated different circumstances with a general positive state. While the American students allocated the cause of their positive feeling to something individual and socially-disengaged, for example pride in their achievements, the Japanese students linked it with a friendly and socially engaged feeling.
Point is, it took me some time to understand that I don't live in a culture that values a life lived only for yourself. And to be honest, I don't even want to live that life. My life is not entirely my own, to be lived only and only for myself. I live for the people around me- my parents, my sister, my friends. I cannot expect people to to leave me be 100% of the time, especially not when I literally live at home with three other people. I cannot always be "I, Me, Myself" when there are people around me who will be affected by my actions and behaviours.
And my attraction towards that specific lifestyle was ruining my relationship with my family and my own mood and mental health, because I came to see my family as a burden and something that suffocates me and hinders my growth, without understanding that the people who I was aspiring to be are leading a very different life from mine.
I know I might be coming off as complimenting individualistic cultures, but I am not. Trust me, the idea of being so focused on yourself that your entire life revolves only around you is so bizarre to me. The idea that people will value anything above their families is so alien to me. I live for the people around me willingly, and I do not want to adopt a way of life that will devalue the people I love and care about.
The point of all this is that I am still trying to tell myself that it is okay if I don't have a morning routine and drink smoothies and have a pre-planned timetable. I don't have to punish myself for not being able to do all of that, or blame my family for it. It's not either one or the other. Just because other people are following a certain lifestyle doesn't mean it is going to fit into the way I live as well. It is okay that the people around me need my help sometimes, I am more than honoured to do it. And it is okay if my mother calls me for dinner when I am in the middle of an intense study session. I can explain it to her without having to make it a big deal and cry to myself in my journal. It is a small journey of accepting my life as being good and satisfactory instead of aspiring for something that has only ever given me trouble.
Idk if this is a reminder or a rant or a lesson or a story, but if you read till the end. Wow.
I downloaded Tumblr only because I wanted to say this but I didn't know where to say it, so now imma go back to studying. Bye.

The winter storm (NYT) A sprawling storm dumped snow across much of the U.S., including areas that rarely get it. More than 6 inches fell on Austin, Texas—the most in 55 years. Millions of people are without electricity. The cold shattered longstanding records: Temperatures dropped to 17 degrees in Houston and to minus 38 degrees in Hibbing, Minn. At one point Monday, the Weather Service had winter storm warnings issued from Brownsville, Tex., along the U.S.-Mexico border to Caribou, Maine, a distance of more than 2,500 miles. Snow even accumulated on the beach in Galveston, a city where residents are far more accustomed to hurricanes than they are to wintry weather.
Millions endure record cold without power; at least 16 dead (AP) A winter storm that left millions without power in record-breaking cold weather claimed more lives Tuesday, including three people found dead after a tornado hit a seaside town in North Carolina and four family members who perished in a Houston-area house fire while using a fireplace to stay warm. The storm that overwhelmed power grids and immobilized the Southern Plains carried heavy snow and freezing rain into New England and the Deep South and left behind painfully low temperatures. Wind-chill warnings extended from Canada into Mexico. In all, at least 16 deaths were reported. The worst U.S. power outages were in Texas, affecting more than 4 million homes and businesses. More than 250,000 people also lost power across parts of Appalachia, and another quarter million were without electricity following an ice storm in northwest Oregon. Four million people lost power in Mexico. Utilities from Minnesota to Texas implemented rolling blackouts to ease the burden on power grids straining to meet the extreme demand for heat and electricity.
Pelosi says independent commission will examine Capitol riot (AP) House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Monday that Congress will establish an independent, Sept. 11-style commission to look into the deadly insurrection that took place at the U.S. Capitol. Pelosi said the commission will “investigate and report on the facts and causes relating to the January 6, 2021, domestic terrorist attack upon the United States Capitol Complex … and relating to the interference with the peaceful transfer of power.” In a letter to Democratic colleagues, Pelosi said the House will also put forth supplemental spending to boost security at the Capitol. An independent commission along the lines of the one that investigated the Sept. 11 attacks would probably require legislation to create. That would elevate the investigation a step higher, offering a definitive government-backed accounting of events. Still, such a panel would pose risks of sharpening partisan divisions or overshadowing President Joe Biden’s legislative agenda.
Ambassador sweepstakes underway as figures jockey for plum posts (Washington Post) Harry M. Reid’s phone has been ringing a lot lately, with calls from interest groups, friends and potential candidates themselves, all craving one thing: an ambassadorship. The former Senate majority leader then picks up the phone and dials Steve Ricchetti, one of President Biden’s top advisers, who for months has been fielding requests for plum positions. “There’s very few political jobs that bring the dignity of being an ambassador for the United States to a country. It’s a very prestigious position,” Reid said. But he suggested the would-be envoys shouldn’t hold their breath: “I think with the impeachment going on and trying to get the Cabinet filled, I think people should be understanding that things are more important than the ambassadorship right now with the president.” It is a sweepstakes that comes along every four or eight years—intense jockeying in public and private as the well-heeled and well-connected seek coveted positions that come with lavish housing, a staff of chefs and an expectation that the U.S. envoy will put the digs to use for parties. With its mix of famous figures and exotic locales, the competition always attracts interest. But it is under more scrutiny than usual this year as Biden stresses his desire to repair international relationships that frayed under Trump, with ambassadors likely to play a key role in that effort.
A third party (Gallup) Americans’ desire for a third party has ticked up since last fall and now sits at a high in Gallup’s trend. Sixty-two percent of U.S. adults say the “parties do such a poor job representing the American people that a third party is needed,” an increase from 57% in September. Support for a third party has been elevated in recent years, including readings of 60% in 2013 and 2015 and 61% in 2017. Meanwhile, 33% of Americans believe the two major political parties are doing an adequate job representing the public, the smallest percentage expressing this view apart from the 26% reading in October 2013.
Kidnap capital Mexico eyes biometric phone registry, sparking privacy fears (Reuters) A plan by Mexican lawmakers to put millions of cell phone users’ data in a biometric registry, billed as a tool to fight kidnapping and extortion, has sparked a backlash from telecoms companies and rights groups who warn it could lead to stolen data and higher costs. Already approved in the lower house of Congress, the reform is in line with President Andres Lopez Obrador’s vow to counter crime using intelligence methods rather than force, but critics say it reveals the pitfalls of governments seeking to gather more citizen data for law enforcement purposes. Under the plan, America Movil, AT&T Inc and other carriers would be responsible for collecting customers’ data, including fingerprints or eye biometrics, to submit to a registry managed by Mexico’s telecoms regulator. But a telecoms industry group that counts some major companies as members warned in an open letter that the reform could increase phone theft as criminals look to get around the registry by stealing devices and could risk customers’ safety if personal data were misused.
As the virus crisis drags on, hard-hit French youth struggle (AP) On a recent evening, Leïla Ideddaim waited to receive a bag of food, along with hundreds of other French young people who are unable to make ends meet. She saw the chitchat that accompanied the handout as a welcome byproduct, given her intense isolation during the pandemic. The 21-year-old student in hotel and restaurant management has seen her plans turned upside down by the virus crisis. With restaurants and tourist sites shuttered and France under a 6 p.m. curfew, her career prospects are uncertain. Odd jobs that were supposed to keep her going during her studies are hard to come by. “I’m in a fog,” said Ideddaim, who moved to Paris last year and is now struggling to meet both her basic needs and her emotional ones. The pandemic has devastated economies the world over, pushing vulnerable people deeper into poverty or tipping some into it for the first time. In France, the economic fallout has weighed particularly heavily on young people—and their woes have only been compounded by disruptions to their studies and social interactions. Nearly a quarter of French young people can’t find work—two-and-a-half times the national unemployment rate and one of the highest in the European Union’s 27 nations. Many university students now rely on food aid and several organizations have rallied to meet the need.
Separatists grow majority in Catalonia despite Socialist win (AP) The pro-union Socialist Party claimed a narrow win in regional elections in Catalonia late Sunday, but the bloc of parties supporting secession by Spain’s northeastern corner widened their control of the regional parliament. The outcome confirms that pro-separatist sentiment has not waned despite the collective suffering of the COVID-19 pandemic and a frustrated secession bid in October 2017 that left several of its members in prison. Four years on, the wealthy region that has its own language spoken alongside Spanish remains divided down the middle by the secession question. However, it was not clear if the separatist parties would be able to overcome the in-fighting that has plagued their bloc since the dream of an easy breakaway from Spain proved elusive.
Moscow residents get the snow they longed for (Washington Post) The snow started falling late Thursday in Moscow, sticking to car windshields and hiding walking paths. By the time it was over on Sunday, parked cars were buried under heaps of snow. The weekend’s wintery blast was noteworthy even for the Russian capital. A year ago, as Moscow experienced its warmest winter in nearly 200 years of record keeping, Russians longed for the white covering that often makes January and February’s dark days appear brighter. This wallop caused more than 100 flights to be delayed or canceled as some residents traversed downtown in skis.
India arrests student activist (Foreign Policy) New Delhi police have arrested a 22-year-old activist for sedition after she shared and made edits to a document—a Google doc—shared by climate activist Greta Thunberg when she expressed her support for India’s farmer protests. The document provided background on the protests as well as providing advice on nonviolent actions to support the farmers. “The Indian state must be standing on very shaky foundations if Disha Ravi, a 22-year-old student of Mount Carmel college and a climate activist, has become a threat to the nation,” said P. Chidambaram of the opposition Indian National Congress.
India’s dramatic fall in virus cases leaves experts stumped (AP) When the coronavirus pandemic took hold in India, there were fears it would sink the fragile health system of the world’s second-most populous country. Infections climbed dramatically for months and at one point India looked like it might overtake the United States as the country with the highest case toll. But infections began to plummet in September, and now the country is reporting about 11,000 new cases a day, compared to a peak of nearly 100,000, leaving experts perplexed. India, like other countries, misses many infections, and there are questions about how it’s counting virus deaths. But the strain on the country’s hospitals has also declined in recent weeks, a further indication the virus’s spread is slowing. When recorded cases crossed 9 million in November, official figures showed nearly 90% of all critical care beds with ventilators in New Delhi were full. On Thursday, 16% of these beds were occupied.
Myanmar military guarantees new election; protesters block train services (Reuters) Myanmar’s military junta guaranteed on Tuesday that it would hold an election and hand over power, denied its ouster of an elected government was a coup or that its leaders were detained, and accused protesters of violence and intimidation. The junta’s defence of its Feb. 1 seizure of power and arrest of government leader Aug San Suu Kyi and others came as protesters again took to the streets and as China dismissed rumours spreading on social media that it had helped with the coup. As well as the demonstrations in towns and cities across the ethnically diverse country, a civil disobedience movement has brought strikes that are crippling many functions of government. The unrest has revived memories of bloody outbreaks of opposition to almost half a century of direct army rule that ended in 2011 when the military began a process of withdrawing from politics.
Defying Biden administration, Egypt again arrests relatives of Egyptian American activist (Washington Post) Egyptian security forces raided the homes of six relatives of an outspoken Egyptian American activist, arresting and imprisoning two cousins in defiance of calls by the Biden administration for the Egyptian government to improve its human rights record, rights advocates said Tuesday. The targeting of the relatives of Mohamed Soltan, a human rights defender based in Northern Virginia, marks the latest attempt by the government of President Abdel Fatah al-Sissi to silence its critics living abroad, according to political opponents of the former military chief. Sunday’s arrests came roughly three months after five of Soltan’s relatives were released from prison, days after Joe Biden won the presidency. They had been forcibly taken from their homes in June after Soltan filed a lawsuit in the United States against former Egyptian prime minister Hazem el-Beblawi for his role in inflicting torture on Soltan when he was imprisoned in Egypt. Biden highlighted the case during the presidential election campaign, tweeting that torturing Egyptian activists and “threatening their families is unacceptable.” He also warned of “no more blank checks for Trump’s ‘favorite dictator,’” referring to Sissi by a term that Trump once used for him. By going after Soltan’s relatives again, as well as the relatives of other foreign-based critics in recent days, the Sissi government appears to be challenging the Biden administration and its efforts to make human rights a foreign policy priority once again for the United States, activists and analysts said.
Zuma Risks Arrest After Defying South Africa Corruption Inquiry (NYT) Jacob Zuma, the former president of South Africa whose nearly decade-long tenure was tainted by breathtaking corruption scandals, refused to appear before an inquiry panel Monday, raising the possibility that he would be imprisoned for contempt. The panel’s leader, Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, said he was seeking an order from the Constitutional Court, the country’s highest court, that would “impose a term of imprisonment on Mr. Zuma.” Justice Zondo’s move catapulted the simmering theme of corruption during Mr. Zuma’s term, which lasted from 2009 to 2018, into a tense showdown over the accountability of the former president. His successor, Cyril Ramaphosa, has promised to purge the governing African National Congress of endemic problems of bribery and graft that have severely damaged its credibility in South Africa, one of the continent’s most important economic powerhouses. Mr. Zuma, 78, had been set to appear before the inquiry panel, the Commission on State Capture, starting Monday for a week of testimony about his role in the corruption. The former president sent a letter from his lawyers instead, arguing that he was not legally bound to appear.

Welcome (again) to the Order of the Phoenix, Mary!
You have been accepted for the role of TED TONKS with the faceclaim change of Dev Patel! We really enjoyed your discussion of Ted in relationship to his motivation and family, while also holding that subtle masculinity and sexism of how he feels he should “be the man in the family.” It was really clever and fit his character so well! So excited to see you take on this role!
Please take a look at the new member checklist and send in your account within 24 hours! Thank you for joining the fight against Voldemort!
OUT OF CHARACTER:
NAME: Mary
AGE: 26
TIMEZONE: EST
ACTIVITY LEVEL: My activity level is definitely moderate, mostly active on the weekends since that’s when I can dedicate the most time. Though, my work load is slowing down a bit each week and I’ll be done with teaching completely by the beginning of June. Which means full time to rp!
ANYTHING ELSE: Same ones as before!
CHARACTER DETAILS:
NAME: Ted Tonks
AGE: 30
GENDER, PRONOUNS, and SEXUALITY: Cisgender Male, He/Him, Heterosexual.
BLOOD STATUS: Muggleborn (obvs)
HOUSE ALUMNI: Hufflepuff
ANY CHANGES: Dev Patel as FC <3
CHARACTER BACKGROUND:
PERSONALITY:
Ted has always been known to be a loyal, hardworking, dedicated young man. It’s hard not to be charmed into his positive outlook. He’s got an adorable smile and a kind, respectful attitude that naturally gravitates people towards him. During his time at Hogwarts, Ted obviously didn’t care for blood status or background, so it wasn’t abnormal to see him mingling and getting along with different groups of people. He was one to empathize easily with any person’s situation and be the shoulder to lean on, if necessary. Becoming a husband and father has only amplified his best traits - pushing him to realize this is what he was meant to do his entire life. He was meant to be a life partner to Andromeda, the woman he loved, and to rediscover hope and new life every day in the eyes of his daughter Nymphadora. Ted has always been good at healing and charms. Becoming a stay-at-home dad has given him reason to perfect these skills, anytime Dora got sick or her young signs of magic would spontaneously appear without notice. Ted has been struggling with keeping the secret of his involvement in the Order from Andromeda. On any given day, Ted is the kind of person to be honest and communicate with his wife. However, with the war going on around them, his whole life is at stake of being taken away from him. Andromeda works hard in the Ministry to provide for the family and Dora grows worried as she hears stories all the way from school, and growing up as someone who was taught to work and sacrifice everything for family, he couldn’t just stay idly by and do nothing. Ted hates feeling underestimated or helpless in any situation, and in times like these, he will tell himself to “be a man” and see this as opportunity to step up for what is right.
BRIEF OVERVIEW OF FAMILY:
Ted Tonks is the only child of two muggle parents, immigrants who came to the UK from the slums of Delhi, India. His parents yearned for a better life for their child, teaching Ted everything he knows about hard work and sacrifice for the love of family. After moving to Birmingham at the age of 4, Ted learned to live anew in a community where very few people looked and shared a culture like him. Even though he was very likable amongst his childhood friends and their families, Ted knew even in the smallest ways that he was different, an outsider. The deep-rooted prejudices were most noticed in his father and mother’s small shop, and yet, the respect for cultivating a business from the ground up was still tested daily. However, a young Ted never paid too much attention to the way some people mistrusted his family. Even in his family’s most difficult years, getting accustomed to their new life in a new home, Ted found countless moments of simple joys and learned to make the most out of nothing.
OCCUPATION:
For eleven years, Ted has been a stay-at-home dad. However, once Nymphadora went off to school, Ted began job searching, even with the difficult prejudices he faced being a Muggleborn wizard. Eventually after a referral, he’s took on working part-time in the Muggle-Worthy Excuse Committee in the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes. It fits him well since he is bridge between both worlds, but in some ways, still wishes he can do more without being judged for his blood line.
ROLE WITHIN THE ORDER/THOUGHTS ABOUT THE ORDER:
Ted has always been good with healing magic and charms, especially after being a stay-at-home dad for so long. So he’s primarily began helping Emmeline with any tasks she needs assistance with, as well as any potion/charm work that needs to be taken care of. However, if he’s given the chance to go out for a mission, he will jump on the chance to do anything that’s asked of him.
Ted respects the Order of the Phoenix. Not only has it given a chance for him to do more, but he feels that in times like these, being above the law is a necessary evil for the common good. Before all this, Ted might have been the kind of person to back away and watch what happens to the world - but not anymore. He knows that the Order has had some rough patches and yet, that’s what war looks like. With the Order, Ted believes he can work toward making a better world for his daughter.
SURVIVAL:
I think even if other people look down at their relationship, what is really keeping him alive at this point is Andromeda. Even being married to him, Andromeda with her blood line and ties to the Ministry carry weight in this world. He doesn’t like to admit it, since sometimes, he doesn’t quite understand what she does and he feels as man of the house, he should be providing more for his family. They also try to keep a quiet life in a little cottage by the coast, away from the eyes of the Wizarding community. So when you are secluded and keep your business to yourself, people tend to not pay any attention to you.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Andromeda is the person closest to Ted, not only for being the love of his life, but also for the reason that once they got married and had Nymphadora, Ted lost touch with many of the people he had friendships with. He still talks to his parents every so often, but in order to keep them far from the dangers of the Wizarding World, he has kept a good distance from them, chugging it up to now living two hours away from his hometown. Ted still deeply cares for all of his estranged friends and even if they haven’t spoken in years, his loyalty to them will always be there. He might not find the same feeling the other way around and Ted wouldn’t blame them for feeling so. Regardless, he has no regrets for the decisions he has made, as he knows he did what’s best for his family.
OOC EXPLORATION:
SHIPS/ANTI-SHIPS: Andromeda/Ted for sure. There’s a lot going on there - between their own biases and withholding information about the length of their participation in the Order. But Ted/Chemistry is most important!! In the end, I ship all the things.
WHAT PRIVILEGES AND BIASES DOES YOUR CHARACTER HAVE?
Being a Muggleborn and person of color, Ted would probably grow up with the least amount of privilege or bias towards anyone. Especially after becoming a father, Ted has been a very tolerant and open-minded person, as he truly believes that you should treat others the way you want to be treated. However, that doesn’t excuse the fact that deep down inside, after years and years of prejudice against his kind, Ted still grew an unconscious mistrust for Pureblood kind. Seeing Purebloods like Isla Selwyn-Macmillan, who have family members so vocal about their support for the Dark Lord, being a part of the Order put Ted in an uncomfortable spot. Even his wife still uses the word ‘mudblood’ around him, and she is the woman he loves, how does he trust any Pureblood outside of her? Ted also catches himself with what one can only consider mild forms left of traditional masculinity, whenever he compares his job to Andromeda’s and internally debates whether not telling Andromeda he is a part of the Order is the right thing to do. As open-minded as he is, Ted still remembers his father taking majority of the role as head of the house during his childhood, and sometimes, he asks himself whether that’s an expectation he should have for himself too.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO? I love this rp!! It brought back the wonderful feeling of being in this community of Harry Potter role-play and I wanted to find a new character that was a bit different than Marlene. I’m just looking forward to finding more ways to have fun here :’)
PLOT DROP IDEAS: Oof, if he’s a muggleborn wizard and they start going after those Muggleborn wix, my angsty soul wants to say that he goes into hiding and before/after he does so, he gets abducted or hurt in some way through that. Maybe they even find out he works for the Order? Also, if something happens at Hogwarts and in turn, something happens to Nymphadora? Or maybe there’s a threat on her life so Andromeda/Ted will try to go after her? Possibilities are endless!!
ANYTHING ELSE? I love you guys and this rp!! I’m so excited <3

ANYA CHALOTRA, ZEYNAB SHIRAZI, 23. ❝ ⤚⟶ EUROPE, 1458. thanks is given by the WARD OF THE FIRST CONSORT OF PERSIA, ZEYNAB SHIRAZI, from PERSIA. they are at best ARTISTIC, and at their worst ALOOF. whilst abroad, their ambition is to FIND INSPIRATION IN THE CULTURE AND PEOPLE OF EUROPE AND AID WITH PERSIA’S DIPLOMATIC AFFAIRS. SHE seems to remind everyone of ANYA CHALOTRA & A STARRY NIGHT SKY, AN ABSENT-MINDED GAZE, POEMS WRITTEN IN THE CANDLELIGHT. ❞ penned by DEDE; UTC+2, SHE/HER, 19. ❞
all hail zeynab shirazi, the persian poet who kind of tagged along! her stats are here if you want them, and you can find the basics, her app and some plot ideas below!
need to knows.
unlike most of the characters we have here at crowns, zeynab isn’t actually a noble or royal. she has, however, been raised as part of the persian shah’s court since she was a teenager, as ward of the first consort, firouzeh, and playmate and later companion of shahzadeh khanoum khadija.
she was taken in by the consort mainly because of her talent for poetry, which is her main contribution to the court’s prestige and what she occupies herself with generally. zeynab also has a keen interest in mysticism, which is very much visible in her writing, and is secretly practicing zoroastrianism, an ancient religion fairly common yet not official in persia - on paper, though, she’s muslim.
she’s recently had some major internal conflict going on with the persian court getting all ‘choose your side’-y between firouzeh and ghazala, but not only - not even a year ago she fully found out women are supposed to bleed monthly and she... doesn’t, so she’s quite worried and thinks something is wrong with her now. fun!!
zeynab’s kind of just the family weirdo, lurking in strange places and scaring the hell out of everyone. she might seem like an edgy recluse, but she’s a sweetheart deep down, i promise. she just likes sitting and thinking for hours a until someone yells in her face and she snaps out of it.
application.
what current conflicts does your character face? the imperial court has continued becoming increasingly divided as of recent, between those standing by the shah’s first wife, the consort firouzeh, and others, favoring the newest addition to the royal household, the shahbanu ghazala. while it may not have been as outwardly visible as one would expect, given her calm, aloof demeanor, zeynab has been affected by these growing animosities as much as any other member of the family, which she may not be by blood, but has functionally been one for years now. of course, she has been undyingly loyal to firouzeh, the woman who took her in to live alongside the shah’s family in all the luxury they can provide, after her father, a rather wealthy merchant hailing from the delhi sultanate, who in his later years settled in persia after marrying a woman living in shiraz, had fallen ill during the plague and was dying, about to leave her alone with no means to practice her art or perhaps even survive. but after the shahzadeh, her closest friend, has turned to ghazala for guidance, zeynab finds herself torn between the woman she owes everything to and her closest companion in life.
expand on this character’s connections with two other roles. the persian shah’s first wife, the consort firouzeh, is the person without whom zeynab would not exist. if she was alive at all, which can be considered somewhat debatable, she would certainly not have grown up to be the woman she is now, and she’s fully aware of that fact. she loves and admires the consort as if she was her own mother, and is endlessly grateful for the life firouzeh chose to provide for her. but almost as important to zeynab as the consort herself is her daughter, the shahzadeh khanoum khadija, the single closest friend she has ever had in her lifetime. whenever she thinks of the world as lacking understanding of her person, khanoum is always exempt from this kind of opinion; zeynab considers their souls and minds to be connected, and would never do anything that could possibly harm her companion; which has brought her much distress as of recent with the growing internal conflict at court.
personality. zeynab is considered strange and even somewhat eerie or disturbing by most of the persian court, and perhaps quite rightfully so. she doesn’t usually enjoy talking much, oftentimes favoring absent-minded glances and lurking quietly in corners over real interaction with others, causing many a scare for the other inhabitants of the shah’s household. however, when engaged in a civil conversation, she will act predominantly friendly, if still seeming a tad detached from the situation and real life in general. she considers herself an observer more than anything else, generally taking more interest in quietly drawing inspiration from the world around her than taking decisive action; however, there are certainly exceptions to this - she will act in defense of those she loves most, predominantly firouzeh and khanoum khadija, and has developed somewhat of an interest in diplomacy as of late, knowing that despite never having any actual hand in ruling the country, she needs to help strengthen diplomatic ties, secure alliances and gain influence amongst the europeans as much as everyone else in the royal court over the course of their stay in portugal.
poetry. the most important reason zeynab even lives as part of the shah’s household and has access to as much wealth and luxury as her heart can possibly desire, is her rather extraordinary talent as a poet, which she began to exhibit as quite a young girl. her father taught her to read and write, and she began creating her own writings by the early age of twelve. she has undergone some dramatic shifts in her favoured topics before the present day, beginning with mere depictions of the world around her, and currently settling on matters of the human soul, visions of the future and mystical concepts.
mysticism. the person who introduced zeynab to the concepts of mysticism and spirituality was her father, bringing with him the gods of his homeland in the delhi sultanate. while her own country, persia, was dominated by islam, which zeynab is also formally a follower of, about two years ago she found out about the existence of zoroastrianism, the religion of, as the muslims around her call it, fire worshippers, and the ancient faith captivated her in an instant; she has been secretly reading about it and practicing it while simultaneously hiding that fact from everyone else at court ever since. topics of spirituality often feature in her poems.
plots.
fellow artists. characters who also write poetry (which would be preferable, but it could potentially be other art forms as well) and are willing to discuss their craft! zeynab really wants to get to know the way europeans do their literature, and potentially mix some of that into her own works, so a partner who could share their art with her would be ideal! (open to any character who does art of any kind, preferably written)
guides. persia is a hell of a lot different from europe, and someone who could show zeynab how it all works would be much appreciated! i imagine it could blossom into a great friendship. (open to all european characters, preferably christian-european)
romances. it would be very interesting if the person zeynab took an interest in (preferably a mutual one) was someone high-ranking or even royal; she’s in a strange position where she has all the markers of status except actual status, so it would surely create a lot of ~drama~ and conflict! (preferably male characters).
dislikes. as mentioned already, zeynab isn’t technically a royal and a noble, or doesn’t even hold an official function of any kind, and yet she still is here in lisbon and represents the persian empire along with the other court members. that could probably rub some people the wrong way, and i’d love to explore how that goes! (open to all non-persians)
a father figure. while the consort firouzeh functions as a second mother of sorts to zeynab, at least in her eyes, she still has no one to at least try to make up for the tragic loss of her father. i’d love to see someone fill that missing spot and become something of a surrogate father to her! (male characters, 40+, preferably not persian)
fellow lovers of mysticism. our girl zeynab is big into superstitions and the spiritual side of life, and it would be great if she met someone who’s equally interested in all that, but maybe from a different cultural perspective? some great cultural exchange could happen there. (open to all non-persians)

Commanders in Profile: Timur (1336-1405). The Turco-Mongol Apogee.
To history he’s known as Timur or in the west as Tamerlane. He’s one of the great conquerors of history and one who probably best epitomized the Turco-Mongol-Persianate tradition. Taking ancestral links from the Mongols of the Mongol Empire and cultural links from the fellow nomadic Turks as well as the Persians, Timur synthesized all of these influences. He would rise from relative obscurity to command one of the most powerful empires of the Middle Ages.
-Timur is born on April 9, 1336 in the city of Kesh, in modern day Uzbekistan. He is a member of the Barlas, a Mongolian tribe which has been culturally Turkified over the years. He is not a direct descendant of Genghis Khan but is evidently a distant relative through his father due to a shared common ancestor back in Mongolia. His mother’s origins are unknown and variously described as Mongolian or even Persian. His name means “iron” in the Chagatai Turkic language.
-By the time of Timur’s birth, the once powerful Mongol Empire under Genghis Khan has fragmented among competing junior dynasties that form separate states. In Timur’s case, he is born into the Chagatai Khanate, which descends from Genghis Khan but has since converted to Islam and is now culturally Turkified with the majority of its populace being nomadic Turks from Central Asia.
-Timur’s father, Taraghai is a minor noble of a certain social standing and wealth in the Chagatai Khanate.
-Timur turns to the life of nomadic raiding, with a band of followers he conducts raids on travelling caravans, part of the Silk Road that pass through these lands from Europe to China. The raids usually take good, such as animals or other measures of wealth. During one raid against a shepherd, Timur is wounded by two arrows one to his right leg and one to his right hand, both wounds will cripple him the rest of life. Causing Timur to lose two fingers and suffer a limp on his leg. This will give rise to his later name in the west, Tamerlane which is a corruption of the moniker Timur the Lame.
-Timur will become a military leader of Turkic horsemen, the horse archer tradition of the Turks and Mongols would be the central element to his military thereafter. Timur joins the Chagatai Khan on several campaigns by the 1360′s. He invades parts of modern Iran and elsewhere in Central Asia. Becoming leader of the Barlas after his father’s death and becoming a powerful regional governor in the area of his birth, known as Transoxiana, north of the Oxus River which flows in Central Asia.
-In time, the Chagatai Khans begin to lose their central authority and brothers of the dynasty lead to rival claims which weaken the khanate’s power. Timur, ever the shrewd politician sides with whoever is the most advantageous for himself. In time, Timur will reduce the khan’s to mere ceremonial figureheads. He cannot take the title for himself because Mongol tradition dictates only direct descendants of Genghis Khan can do so and this, Timur wasn’t. He instead take the title, Amir which is Arabic for leader, and connotes a military or noble designation which suited Timur, a king in all but name.
-Timur was known to have been multilingual speaking Mongolian, Chagatai Turkic and Persian. This multilingualism would have an appeal in addition to his personal appeal through his intelligence and military prowess. His Mongol linguistics appealed to his tribesmen, giving him a premiere position in their society. His Chagatai Turkic language was the language of his military, it appealed to the core of his army, namely his rank and file horse archers of Turkic extraction. His Persian skills which became the language of culture and governance in the Islamic world from Anatolia to India, appealed to the artisans, politicians, religious clergy and engineers.
-Timur would typically destroy whole cities and their populaces, save for artisans and engineers, people who he could put to work in his own capital, Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
-Timur over the coming decades invaded Persia (modern Iran) as well as Afghanistan as well as consolidated control of Transoxiana. His empire, known in history as the Timurid Empire would control much of Central and West Asia. in 1380 he invaded Persia which has been party of the Mongol successor state, the Ilkhanate. However, due to the Black Death plague of the 1330′s-1340′s, the khanate dynasty was devastated and collapsed. Causing a number of fragmented successor states to rise up in its wake. Due to their decentralized nature, Timur with his consolidated strength was able to overcome enemy after enemy. Gradually ruling over the whole of Persia.
-Timur also was popular with his people due to his supposedly charitable nature, increasing schools and patronizing the arts, namely religious in nature.
-He called himself the “Sword of Islam” and setup a cult of personality to appeal to both his Mongol lineage and his Islamic religion. He could neither be the Great Khan by restriction of birth in the traditional confines of Mongol culture nor could he be the Caliph of Islam by din of descent. Instead through his military victories and charity would he appeal as a spiritual successor to both these claims, a sort of personal ordination by the hand of God.
-The title, Sword of Islam was questionable given that most of his enemies were fellow Muslims, nevertheless the moniker persisted.
-Timur’s varied campaigns took his expanse further west into Mesopotamia and Syria, conquering Baghdad from the Turkic khanates that survived. Additionally, in the 1380′s he came into conflict with the Golden Horde or Tatars. The Golden Horde was the Mongol successor state that ruled over the Caucasus and Eurasian steppe of southern Russia and Ukraine. In time, his long off and on campaigns with the Golden Horde would permanently weaken them. In a ripple effect of Timur’s conflict with the Golden Horde, the Slavic Rus’ principalities which had been vassals of the Mongols since the 13th century now were able to gradually rebel and become independent giving rise to medieval Russia under the power of the princely city-state of Muscovy or Moscow.
-In 1398, Timur turned his attention to the Dehli Sultanate of Northern India which was ruled by the Turco-Indian Tughlaq dynasty. In the battle of Dehli, Timur showed his characteristic tactical prowess. Facing a large Indian army that included armored elephants draped in chain mail and with tusks dipped in poison. Knowing his men were afraid of the elephants and the damage they could do, Timur planned to likewise panic the elephants and reverse their charge on the battlefield. Prior to the battle, he had a trench dug by his men to slow the elephants advance. Then he loaded up pack camels and tied hay and wood to their backs. He set these bundles of hay and wood on fire and prodded the camels with hit iron pokers which sent them charging forward toward the elephants. This bit of psychological warfare worked, scaring the elephants at the sight of camels, howling in pain with flames emitting from their backs. The elephants turned and stampeded towards their own lines from which the Timurid army launched a follow up attack overwhelming the Indian army.
-Timur had 100,000 people executed in Delhi, sacked and burnt the city and looted its many riches to be swept back to Samarkand. This would be emulated when the Persian Shah, Nader Shah in the early 18th century would likewise attack and sack Delhi, ironically then under the leadership of Timur’s descendants.
-1399 saw Timur declare war on the Ottoman Empire then rising in Anatolia as well as the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt.
-1400 saw an invasion of Armenia and Georgia in one of his few campaigns against Christians, as many as 60,000 were enslaved and untold numbers killed with entire districts being depopulated.
-The war with the Ottomans, actually started as a series of insulting letters exchanged with the then Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I. The Ottomans has in the last century risen from semi-obscure beylik in western Anatolia to the most powerful Anatolian Turkic state and one with a presence in Europe with conquest of the Balkans and laying siege to the capital of the Byzantine Empire, Constantinople. However, Timur invaded Anatolia, claiming over lordship of all Turkmen rulers. Bayezid was forced to lift his siege of Constantinople and instead contend with Timur.
-Things came to a head in 1402 at the Battle of Ankara in central Anatolia when the Timurid and Ottoman armies, the two rising Islamic powers of the age would meet. Both armies were large and fought very hard that day, especially of note were the Serbian knights who were vassals of the Ottomans. Their heavy armor repelled the Timurid cavalry’s arrows and the ferocity of the Serbian troops caused Timur to remark that Serbs “fought like lions”. Nevertheless, Ottoman troops on a forced march in summer heat were tired and thirsty from the outset and exhaustion set in and allowed the Timurids with their superior numbers to gradually overwhelm them, though the Serb and Romanian vassals fled the battlefield realizing it a lost cause, Bayezid stayed on to fight. The Ottomans tired, thirsty, partially abandoned by their European troops and then betrayed by their own Tatars who joined the Timurid ranks were eventually surrounded and Bayezid himself was captured and taken prisoner. Never before or ever again would an Ottoman Sultan be taken prisoner on the field of battle, he died in captivity a few months later.
-With Bayezid’s death a civil war in the Ottoman Empire would take place among his sons which provided some relief to the last remnants of the Byzantine Empire as Constantinople would be spared for another few decades. Timur had unintentionally bought them more time. This victory over the Ottomans earned Timur fame in Europe and actually earned him some praise, unique for a Muslim ruler in the eyes of Christian Europe.
-In fact Timur engaged in diplomatic exchanges with France and the Spanish Kingdom of Castile during this time, each sending embassies back and forth. Timur referred to the Castilian king Henry III as like a son. Overall, mixed views of Timur pervaded, his barbaric mass beheadings were condemned but his running interference against a common enemy in the Ottoman Empire was appreciated.
-His westward expansion took him to western Anatolia and city of Smyrna which had an Ottoman contingent hiding and protected by Christian Knights of Rhodes and supported by Genoese Italian sailors. The Timurids put up a two week siege which finally succeeded in capturing the city despite fierce resistance from the Knights of Rhodes. Much of the city as was Timur’s custom was executed by mass beheading, burning or burying alive. Some Knights escaped on Genoese ships as did the Ottomans, ferried back to the Balkans where they were safe. This marked the extent of Timur’s westward expanse, he returned east to his empire having wrought the necessary damage upon the Ottomans and setting them up for a 12 year long civil war which kept them distracted.
-Timur, next planned an eastward campaign against the Ming dynasty of China which had overthrown the Mongol over lordship of China which had existed since the days of Genghis Khan. Timur’s goal was to conquer China and restore Mongol rule there now with an Islamic flavor. In 1405 he set out after months of preparation and died en route to China in Kazakhstan on February 17th of that year. His cause of death is believed to have been the common cold, though is not known definitively. He was by then nearing his 70′s and was liable to have been prone to death by disease.
-Timur was buried in simplistic fashion though in an ornate mausoleum in Samarkand. His tomb was said to had a curse placed on it. That anyone who disturbed it would face a great calamity. Nader Shah, his Turco-Persian emulator in the 18th century is rumored to have taken some jade from Timur’s tomb only to have his son fall ill until the jade was returned. Most famously in 1941 with Uzbekistan part of the USSR, Soviet scientists exhumed Timur’s body and conducted research confirming his disability and able to get a description of his body size, frame and reconstruct his facial features. The exhumation took place days before the Nazi invasion of the USSR. Some have tried to link the events. Indeed Timur’s body was re entombed in 1942 prior to the victory of Stalingrad which shifted the tide of war on the Eastern Front of World War II. Whether one believes in a link between these events and disturbances to the tomb of Timur, the idea of a curse persists into the modern era.
-Timur’s legacy was a one of great ambition and a demonstration of the power of the individual to through their own deeds appeal to others and in doing so come to wield great power and influence. He attempted to straddle legacies that influenced him, a Mongol tradition and an Islamic religious duty, both of which motivated him to attempt a Mongol renaissance but combine with Islam’s religious unity. Timur might not have been able to succeed in all his ambition due to time and his death but his achievements were certainly vast and plentiful.
-His legacy isn’t just military victory and conquest but it is one of patronizing art and in his attempt to put forth that Turco-Mongol tradition with Islamic influences that influenced architecture in Central Asia and the greater Islamic world in general. He also had a legacy that lived outside him and beyond him. His campaigns indirectly gave rise to the later Russian Empire and preserved the Byzantine Empire. His own love of Persian culture and government administration became a hallmark of Islamic empires for ages to come in terms of language and high culture.
-Timur’s legacy is also one that existed within his family, his empire never really maintained the stability it did under him, his successors ruled but another century or so but the state began to crumble and decentralize much like predecessor states in the region had before him. Eventually the Uzbek tribes and the Kurdish Safavid dynasty which came to rule Persia in the 1500′s replaced the remnants of the Timurid Empire and the various Turkic tribes in its power vacuum. One of his descendants by the name of Babur escaped to the east and established power over Delhi forming the Mughal Empire which spread Islam throughout India and came to rule much of the subcontinent for the next several centuries.
-Finally, Timur’s atrocities need to be accounted for as well, millions dead due to war, mass executions or through famine and disease are attested too. Some estimates say upward of 17 million died as a result of Timur’s campaigns through various causes, roughly this was 5% of the world’s estimated total population at the time. Already ravaged by the Black Death decades before, it would take some places decades if not centuries to recover its population...

If you want me to go back to USA, okay, we can talk about how that would work and I can draft up a quick budget. A quick google comes up with a flight from Delhi to Seattle for about 30k, or $450, rounding down. Now we’re already in territory that’s more money than I’ve pulled in this entire year, like we’ve already exceeded that budget and I’m not even there yet, so I hope you have your checkbook ready. No dude, it’s too late. Tears ahoy, this motherfucker gets sad.
Now we’re gonna wanna take a bus from Seattle to one of the cities where I’ve spent the most time, let’s do Bellingham, another $20, we’re counting it, I already paid for the tickets from Kashmir to Delhi.
Now the cheapest I managed to pay in rent there is about $500 and lucky you this includes utilities. I actually feel pretty good about my ability to get back on food stamps pretty quickly, so I won’t charge you for food right now, I’ll only make you pay one month of it, so $180 which is about what I used to get on food stamps. You’d better hope Trump hasn’t made that process any harder though. I haven’t been following current events.
Now to move in I’ll also need to put up first and last as a deposit, so $1000. And of course I’ll need to re-apply for disability, which last time took me a year and 8 months, so we’ll call it an even 18 months, because I’m feeling generous and I’m sure Trump’s drained the swamp and made the process a lot easier. We’ll assume I’ll be approved the first time, which doesn’t happen in a majority of cases. If it doesn’t then you and I can talk about sponsoring my legal fees.
Since I won’t have any housing history in the country, no credit, no bank account I can point at with a lot of money, etc, I’m gonna need a cosigner, so probably your parents. You better talk to them about it and get them on board before I get there, because no cosigner means no house, period, and without that, it’s a non-starter even with the money.
Okay so counting only transport and rent the costs look like this:
$450 + 20 (470) $1500 (1970) $180 (2,150) 500x18 ($11,150) Good thing I’m used to sleeping on wooden boards ‘cause this room came unfurnished.
So, since I’m sure my detractors aren’t just a bunch of broke-ass incels, I’m sure they can come up with eleven thousand, one hundred and fifty US dollars between them, right? After all, I’m white, so that should help them na?
https://ko-fi.com/vivyansarlas https://www.paypal.me/pcoolpearl https://www.patreon.com/vivyansarlas
Raise it and we’ll talk. And remember, if I don’t get approved for disability the first time you need to keep paying my rent and legal fees, and if something’s changed about food stamps it’s coming out of your pocket. If housing got more expensive in Bellingham while I was gone that’s also not my problem.

Most visitors simply open a paper welcome when they get it, once, bookmark your dates or put an update – and everything gets lost inside minutes. Alongside the day's paper, the vast majority of the wedding solicitations locate their last resting spot – the paper reuse box.
The other issue is overseeing . A few people call to affirm, some would communicated something specific, yet there is no real way to follow who is going to your wedding photography in Delhi who needs convenience and who probably won't have the capacity to make it.
1. A Video Invite
So you need to establish a connection, you wouldn't fret spending a generous sum on your wedding welcome however you need to be eco-accommodating. The Video welcome is the arrangement.
View this e-welcome that we made for a couple getting hitched in Pune, as of late. The best thing with the short movie is that – you interface straightforwardly to the general population whom you are welcoming, it is exceptionally close to home – which a paper welcome would not approach, except if you convey it face to face.
The second huge favorable position is – that you can without much of a stretch post your RSVP/FB Invite connect alongside the Film. This guarantees you can follow the list of attendees. I know, it's as yet remarkable in India for individuals to really take the additional moment to RSVP, yet it's a getting pattern, and individuals are progressively mindful about saying a Yes or a No – to enable the hosts to design better.

Reopening brings more coronavirus cases (NYT) The warning that echoed ominously for weeks is becoming a reality: Once states begin to reopen, a surge in coronavirus cases will follow. Thousands of Americans have been sickened by the virus in new outbreaks, particularly in the Sun Belt and the West. As of Friday, coronavirus cases were climbing in 22 states amid reopenings. Arizona, Texas and Florida are reporting their highest case numbers yet. California and Washington have reopened in a more incremental way, but have still seen an uptick in cases.
Coronavirus survival comes with a $1.1 million, 181-page price tag (Seattle Times) Remember Michael Flor, the longest-hospitalized COVID-19 patient who, when he unexpectedly did not die, was jokingly dubbed “the miracle child?” Now they can also call him the million-dollar baby. Flor, 70, who came so close to death in the spring that a night-shift nurse held a phone to his ear while his wife and kids said their final goodbyes, is recovering nicely these days at his home in West Seattle. But he says his heart almost failed a second time when he got the bill from his health care odyssey the other day. The total tab for his bout with the coronavirus: $1.1 million. $1,122,501.04, to be exact. All in one bill that’s more like a book because it runs to 181 pages. The bill is technically an explanation of charges, and because Flor has insurance including Medicare, he won’t have to pay the vast majority of it. But for now it’s got him and his family and friends marveling at the extreme expense, and bizarre economics, of American health care.
Protests focus on over-policing. But under-policing is also deadly. (Washington Post) By the time he was 18, Jay had already been shot twice. And he’d learned a lesson about how to keep himself safe in his high-crime New York neighborhood: He was always armed. Jay (a pseudonym we gave him to protect his identity) had little faith that the police would ever bring his assailants to justice—or that they could protect him from future attacks. “I just [know] where [my enemies] live and . . . the gang, I know that they be over there. . . . I gotta carry it in bad places.” As the protests sparked by George Floyd’s death at the hands of officers in Minneapolis have continued, fervent calls to “defund the police”—or even abolish departments altogether—have quickly risen to the top of some reformers’ wish lists. This push seems aimed at addressing the dangers of over-policing: not just obvious abuses like Floyd’s death but also heavy-handed law enforcement responses in communities of color to minor offenses, such as loitering, drinking in public or panhandling. But a great deal of scholarship has demonstrated that under-policing also leaves residents feeling perpetually underserved and unsafe. Residents of distressed urban neighborhoods have complained about ineffective policing for centuries, including officers’ rudeness, slow response times and lack of empathy for crime victims. Some residents of high-crime neighborhoods have long concluded that police are either incapable of keeping them safe or unwilling to do so—and a small subset of repeat offenders, like Jay and others we spoke to, have discarded the criminal justice system entirely as a viable mechanism for settling trivial disputes with enemies, opting instead to literally take matters into their own hands. The result is that many black and brown communities now suffer from the worst of all worlds: over-aggressive police behavior in frequent encounters with residents, coupled with the inability of law enforcement to effectively protect public safety. But defunding police departments would address only one side of this problem. And the real, and significant, dangers of under-policing would just get worse in the neighborhoods that most need the police to improve—not disappear.
Tourists dip their toes in water as top Mexican beach getaway reopens (Reuters) Foreign visitors have begun to trickle back to the white sands and warm waters of Mexico’s Caribbean coast as its popular beaches gradually reopen to tourism with new sanitary measures in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. “I’ve been stuck in New York City in my apartment for three months, so I decided that on the beach somewhere open was probably a good call,” said web designer Sam Leon, 31, after arriving Saturday at the airport of famed resort town Cancun. Others were similarly undeterred, even as Mexico reported record infection levels in recent days and in certain areas is at the peak of the pandemic.
Bolivian schoolteacher gives virtual classes as superhero (AP) Sometimes, Jorge Manolo Villarroel is Spiderman. Sometimes, he’s the Flash, or the Green Lantern. But he’s always a teacher—one who lives out his childhood dreams by dressing up as superheroes for the locked-down students who attend his virtual classes. His classes have become so popular that siblings fight for the laptop screen to learn from this costumed teacher. They, in turn, often offer him tech help. At 33, Villarroel speaks with the passion of a child. His modest room is filled with the masks and costumes of his characters, along with images of Christ, several Roman Catholic saints, revolutionary Che Guevara and his parents. Villarroel, who lives in a poorer neighborhood of the Bolivian capital, teaches art at the San Ignacio Catholic School in a wealthier area. His students range from 9 to 14 years old.
Yankee go home: What does moving troops out of Germany mean? (AP) After more than a year of thinly-veiled threats to start pulling U.S. troops out of Germany unless Berlin increases its defense spending, President Donald Trump appears to be proceeding with a hardball approach, planning to cut the U.S. military contingent by more than 25%. About 34,500 American troops are stationed in Germany—50,000 including civilian Department of Defense employees—and the plan Trump reportedly signed off on last week envisions reducing active-duty personnel to 25,000 by September, with further cuts possible. But as details of the still-unannounced plan trickle out, there’s growing concerns it will do more to harm the U.S.’s own global military readiness and the NATO alliance than punish Germany. The decision was not discussed with Germany or other NATO members, and Congress was not officially informed—prompting a letter from 22 Republican members of the House Armed Services Committee urging a rethink.
Delhi to use 500 railway coaches as hospital facilities to fight coronavirus (Reuters) India’s federal government said on Sunday it will provide New Delhi’s city authorities with 500 railway coaches that will be equipped to care for coronavirus patients, after a surge in the number of cases led to a shortage of hospital beds.
China reports 57 new cases, highest daily number in 2 months (AP) China on Sunday reported its highest daily total of new coronavirus cases in two months after the capital’s biggest wholesale food market was shut down following a resurgence in local infections. The Xinfadi market on Beijing’s southeastern side was closed Saturday and neighboring residential compounds locked down after more than 50 people in the capital tested positive for the coronavirus. They were the first confirmed cases in 50 days in the city of 20 million people. Authorities locked down 11 residential communities near the Xinfadi market. Police installed white fencing to seal off a road leading to a cluster of apartment buildings.
Kim Jong Un’s sister threatens S. Korea with military action (AP) The powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un threatened military action against South Korea as she bashed Seoul on Saturday over declining bilateral relations and its inability to stop activists from floating anti-Pyongyang leaflets across the border. Describing South Korea as an “enemy,” Kim Yo Jong repeated an earlier threat she had made by saying Seoul will soon witness the collapse of a “useless” inter-Korean liaison office in the border town of Kaesong. Kim, who is first vice department director of the ruling Workers’ Party’s Central Committee, said she would leave it to North Korea’s military leaders to carry out the next step of retaliation against the South. Kim’s harsh rhetoric demonstrates her elevated status in North Korea’s leadership. Already seen as the most powerful woman in the country and her brother’s closest confidant, state media recently confirmed that she is now in charge of relations with South Korea.
Thai entrepreneur connects Michelin bistros to those in need (AP) Natalie Bin Narkprasart’s business was in Paris. But she was locked down by COVID-19 restrictions and stuck in Thailand. Her heart was in Thailand, too—and it ached for her compatriots who were suffering in the pandemic. So she recruited a network of volunteers, including Michelin-starred chefs, to help those in her homeland whose already modest incomes were shattered by the pandemic restrictions. Her group, COVID Thailand Aid, says it has reached more than 30,000 people in more than 100 locations with care packages and freshly cooked food.
Kids around the world are out of school. Millions of girls might not go back. (Washington Post) She was 13 when the Ebola virus struck her country, shuttering schools across Sierra Leone. The closures lasted nine months, but Mari Kalokoh could not return to the classroom for years. Global shutdowns have pushed approximately 1.5 billion students out of school since March, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund, including 111 million girls in the world’s least developed countries. The disruptions are projected to end or seriously delay the education of 10 million secondary-school age girls. Parents in more traditionally conservative nations tend to prioritize the education of their sons, experts say. In West and Central Africa, 73 percent of boys older than 15 can read, compared with 60 percent of girls in the same age group. So when families lose income, they’re more likely to stretch the budget on schooling for boys, said Laila Gad, UNICEF’s representative in Liberia, a former Ebola hotspot. Remote learning, she added, is especially burdensome for girls, who are frequently expected to shoulder more cooking, cleaning and babysitting.
Pope appeals for end to Libyan civil war (Reuters) Pope Francis appealed on Sunday for both sides in the Libyan civil war to seek peace, urging the international community to facilitate talks and protect refugees and migrants he said were victims of cruelty. In an impassioned plea during his noon address in St. Peter’s Square, Francis said he was pained by the situation in Libya, which has had no stable central authority since dictator Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown by NATO-backed rebels in 2011. For more than five years Libya has had rival parliaments and governments in the east and the west, with streets often controlled by armed groups and sporadic fighting.
