Okay, I had a thought a few days ago and have been trying to get it right. But. I think I figured it out. (Don't expect 100% accuracy)
So, Pallas and Athena. Athena bursts out of Zeus' head, and confusion and chaos and Hera, so Athena ends up at Triton's camp/school/military base thing. There, she meets Pallas, Triton's daughter, and as such, is Poseidon's granddaughter. The two become close, very close. I've seen them be close as sisters and be lovers, and I'm not 100% sure what they were, but, I mean, they were Greek...
Nevertheless, Pallas means everything to Athena. Athena grows close with Pallas' family, I mean, her mom lives in her dad's head and said dad kicked her out, so...
Then, tragedy strikes. Pallas dies at Athena's hand. Whether it is a true accident, or Zeus' pride... Athena doesn't know what to think. She is sent away, basically banished by the grieving, who forget that she, too, is grieving a great loss.
Poseidon remains bitter, and continues pushing Athena away. They both remain bitter towards the other for thousands of years, and encourage their children to do so as well.
Put a pin in that.
Remember how there were a bunch of people that were really angry about Annabeth's casting? They were wrong, of course, but hear me out. Leah does look practically opposite to how Annabeth was described in the books. In fact, Walker looks more like Annabeth than Leah does (though, you gotta admit, they are their characters irl too, especially Walker)(also, i think the Annabeth being assumed to not be smart because she was blonde doesn't work as well as institutionalized and the many other types of racism. Athena's "gift/curse/however Annabeth described it" is still at play, so people really need to stop it with the hate towards Leah and Riordan)
ANYWAY I think it would be interesting if they made blondeness/light hair a Poseidon trait, and that's why Athena has avoided it like the plague since Pallas' death: its too painful. Contrastly, Poseidon gives his children light hair in honor of Pallas, as well as to torment Athena.
Specifically, Percy looks basically exactly like Pallas. It would drive this point further if the casting of Athena looks just like Annabeth, too. Thus, when Athena first tells Percy, "I do not approve of your relationship with my daughter," we see so much more than just a spat over Athens (I mean, really, a salt water spring?), we see a romance to last the ages, and a tragedy who's thorns grow ever sharper. Athena is not just being selfish, not wanting a reminder of love lost, but she knows the fierceness of an ocean's love, and would not wish it lost on anyone, especially one of her own. Percy has had a choice thrust upon him: he will be the prophecy child. To the best of everyone's knowledge, Percy will die at 16. Athena will do everything in her power to not hear her daughter cry tears over a child of the sea, not even she knows then so well herself.
(It could also be interesting if Percy looks like a mix of Athena and Pallas (because we know genetics are weird with the Gods), since that would cause extra pain in Athena's heart)(also makes Poseidon extra sad)
(OR Athena makes all her children look like Pallas to honor her. I don't like that one as much)
I also really like an idea I had that it was NOT Poseidon and Athena who invented the chariot, or however that went. Pallas and Athena invented it together, and Athena still uses that first chariot to this day.
Also, it could add some nuance to the Mark of Athena. When the Romans stole Athena, they erased Pallas from her story. Minerva looks like Pallas, and her love for Pallas is gone. She is not just searching for herself, she is searching for the string so interwoven with her own they are the same: she is searching for the soulmate erased from her story.
ALSO, or would be interesting to see this dynamic play out in the 4th book, when Percy is thought to be dead.
I want this to be released as a short film (I would be a great Pallas???? Think about it???? Am I selfish to think that??? Ambitious??? Yes???? What's your point?????????)

Do you have any athena hcs?
Uhhh
How much time do you have lol
I'll try to list the short ones so this post doesn't get too long. Due to writing about her a lot I have a lot of lore lmao
1. Athena is the eldest child (Hephaestus born shortly after her). Nobody who's spoken to her once would expect anything else honestly
2. At the time of the Odyssey she's about 4000 years old (No reason or proof I just decided) Her first 200 years give or take were spent with Triton (read: Pallas)
3. She only got assigned with Warfare as her domain after officially joining Olympus
4. Her emotional distance with her siblings is partly due to Pallas trauma, and partly due to Zeus liking to "keep her to himself" (read: isolated as the favorite). She gets along best with Hermes and Hephaestus (yes, I refuse to accept Erechtonius happened) bc the former is just as chaotic as herself and the latter shares her creativity and both don't ask for a big commitment from her (again. No Erechtonius and no arranged marriages in my plotline let me have this)
5. Dislikes being touched. Her siblings learn to accept it, Zeus does not. She doesn't try to enforce it with him. (Yes in every iteration of her that I will ever write, there will be a touch-starved to hug plotline sue me. I need therapy)
6. Never braids her hair. She used to have braids when with Pallas, but since then she has never worn her hair this way again. She also wears it quite a bit shorter than she used to back then.
7. Her grey eyes are inherited from MĂŠtis. They also glow in the dark. She has perfect night vision.
8. Perfect memory. Also she has bird's eye view versions of even her own memories (hc that one of her domains is history so that's why) It's how she found out that Zeus interfered with Pallas's death.
9. Used to have an Oceanic themed armor before joining Olympus (MĂŠtis made it for her) She allows Hephaestus to make her a new one, shedding the Ocean symbols in an effort to please Zeus.
10. Connected to her status as a virgin goddess but in contrast to Artemis, Athena dresses pretty covered up, doesn't undress even for bathing (in ancient Greece sometimes you'd keep your chiton on as a sort of bathing suit almost, but being naked was more common) (also this is not 'purity' stuff btw I just get that vibe from her, Artemis, literally go off queen you're doing great)
11. Classic but good, cocks her head like an owl like all the time. Also says "hmm" a lot (intonation may vary)
12. (Remember, my hc, you can do whatever you like) I think all the virgin goddesses are acespec/arospec in some capacity, but Athena is the cut and dry aro/ace/repulsed one. Like... It's a big fat no from her (I'm projecting hard btw)
Anyway twelve seems like a good number I hope you like them :) I picked those that aren't specific to Epic and can be applied to myth!Athena too

To Whisper Your name pt.2
Masterlist
Perhaps heâs a lonely man. Maybe the years of being nothing but a soldier had gotten to him. Before his family sold him off to the Romans, heâd dreamt of a life of peace. A family to hold him close, to appreciate him as a person and not a workforce. When he was ârelieved from their custodyâ, as his handler told him, those dreams cracked. He knew what the Romans were like. Barbaric, ruthless, unrelenting. Any chance of him remaining as he was before them was slim to none.Â
His village hadnât been one to praise Gods, the concept foreign to him. When he was introduced to the concept of the Roman gods, he felt conflicted. These powerful beings were known to help the mortals. They brought great harvest, fertility to trying couples, success to a hunt. If you were Roman. Thatâs why they are Roman gods. A foreigner like him, an illegitimate Roman, was sure to be ignored. He prayed nightly to let him go, to allow his dream to occur.Â
Gods, please. I have no one. Please give me someone.
He spent the remaining years of his childhood in an army preparation program. His life was owed to the Roman empire and was expected to pay such. They trained him to be like them. A beast among men. The last 3 years of his childhood, he shot up. Physically and in skill. He went from the average height of a woman to taller than any of the soldiers had ever seen. Northern genes, theyâd say.
Once he had gotten to Rome, he soon realized that in order to make his way through life, heâd need to learn their game. When in Rome, literally. Being kind got him nowhere. Being soft was not a luxury he could afford. He became a hardened version of himself. Him from before was still in there, somewhere. In order to make it, he had to adapt. And adapt he did.
They all feared him. A quick learner, able to practically know where each of the enemyâs hits would land, blood thirsty. He never truly enjoyed the violence, learned behavior I suppose. The dream still lingered. There would be nights where heâd sit beneath the moon and tell her of his thoughts. A wish of a wife and children running around. Heâd run and take them to the North, never letting their fingers touch the blood soaked empire of Rome. She never responded, but imagining someone heard was what kept him going.
The woman in the square itched at his mind in a way he couldnât explain. She looked unhuman. Too sweet to be of the people, too much of a glow surrounding her to be real. He knew there was something calling them together. Her face filled his head as a room does water during a flood. They spoke for maybe 2 minutes, why was she soaking his mind like the warm water of a bath? He needed to see her as one needs to breathe.
His night was filled with thought. She called to him, sirens put to shame. His mind, a forest to a fire, burning all possibility of sleep. He often went without, but this time it seemed as if it didnât even affect him. Thoughts of her were too enticing for sleep.
Attending his day duties faster than before, he went to the square at midday in search of her. Any hint of her presence was gone and the tick in his chest increased with every step. Surely she wasnât stupid enough to not come, was she? No, no she wasnât. Her light blue palla hung from her like the stars in the sky. She sat among flowers in the village squareâs garden, gently caressing the petals. Purples, pinks, and yellowâs all bring out the color of her dress as if they breathe life into it. His breath stopped for a moment once he caught sight of her. Had she looked as if she hung the sun before now? She had to.Â
To him, she was the color around them. Who was she? Romans donât believe in love at first sight. It was a childâs concept. Well he isnât Roman and heâs certainly no child. He straightens before approaching quietly, as to not disturb her peaceful look. The women among them looked to her in pity. A beautiful young woman being watched intently by the scariest soldier theyâd ever seen was for concern. They could only see his eyes. If they had seen in his mind theyâd be writing songs of color and wonder.Â
He clears his throat, gaining her attention. Her eyes shoot up to him, taking a deep breath in. There he was. He was so much bigger from this angle. His hands are clasped in front of him and he bows his head, attempting to make himself appear kinder. Oh how he thought of those eyes. Have you thought of him?
Perhaps you were his moon.

kings rising highlights & annotations
chapter 6
indented text is from the book. some quotes have commentary, some do not. some comments are serious, and some are definitely not. most of them will only make sense to people who have read the series. and, like, there are spoilers. so please read the books first if you're interested!
also: part of the reason i'm doing such a close reading is to study cs pacat's style, especially in terms of how she does romance and erotica. there are "craft notes" that might seem weird, like i'm being redundant or restating something rather than analyzing, but those are more things that i want to remember/take away from the writing!
i'm going to tag these longer posts with "sam reads capri" in case anyone wants to read them all at once.
this is a google doc i wrote with overall content warnings for the captive prince series. it's not perfect, but i do think it's important to include.
Damen watched Laurent enter with his first adviser Vannes
LETâS GOOOOOOOO
The little brow furrows as he searched for vocabulary, the âHow do you sayâ?â and âWhat is it called whenâ?â were gone.
awww cute that damen noticed them before :â) sweetheart
âItâs lucky for him he speaks our language so well,â said Nikandros, as they returned to the Akielon camp. âNothing involving him has anything to do with luck,â said Damen.
Their camps, they agreed, would be kept separate.
ah, the sitcom âline down the roomâ solution
The Veretians were scornful too, in a different way. Akielons were barbarians who kept company with bastards and walked around half naked. He heard the snatches of what was said on the edges of their camp, the ribald calls, the jeers and taunts. When Pallas walked past, Lazar wolf-whistled.
this reminds me of the two factions from the infamous avatar the last airbender episode âthe great divide.â also look, new gay people!
And that was before the more specific rumours, the murmurings among the men, the sidelong speculation that had Nikandros in the warm summer evening, saying, âTake a slave.â Damen said, âNo.â
so itâs like a social expectation. but heâs still not doing it. even LAURENT does it (kinda), although he has much more to prove than the akielons
He buried himself in work, and in physical exercise. During the day he threw himself into the logistics and planning, the tactical groundwork that would facilitate a campaign. He plotted routes. He set up supply lines. He commanded drills. At night he went alone from the camp, and when there was no one around him, he took out his sword and practised until he was dripping with sweat, until he could no longer raise his sword but only stand, his muscles trembling, the tip of his blade pointed to the ground. He went to bed alone. He undressed and sluiced himself down, and only used squires to perform those menial tasks without intimacy. He told himself that this was what he had wanted. There was a working relationship between himself and Laurent.
no this is so sad, but so relatable. breakup behavior transcends worlds
There was no longerâfriendshipâbut that had never been possible.
tell that to laurent, who allowed himself to become your friend and sexual partner, fully aware of the fact that you killed his brother
He had known it would not be some stupid fantasy of showing Laurent his country; of Laurent leaning against the marble balcony at Ios, turning to greet him in the cool air overlooking the sea, his eyes bright with the splendour of the view.
HE đŁď¸ WAS đŁď¸ WATCHING đŁď¸ THE đŁď¸ ROAD
To Kastor, he sent only a single message: I come. He didnât watch that messenger depart. Itâs not naive to trust your family. He had said that, once.
damen. girl.
love the conflicting themes of trust here. damen needs to learn that he canât trust everyone to have intentions as noble as his, and laurent needs to learn that some people in the world can be trusted to have noble intentions. mistrust makes them both feel aloneâlaurent takes comfort in that loneliness, because it means no one can hurt him, but it also means that heâs never truly relaxed or vulnerable (in a good way). damen feels awful with the loneliness of mistrust, and wants so badly to reach out and make connections with people even when the flags are very, very red.
Guion was a man in his late forties, with an indoor figure.
does âindoor figureâ mean ânot fitâ because thatâs so funny đ letâs not bruise the manâs ego by calling him out of shape, heâs just an indoor cat instead
When he saw Damen, Guion bowed in the same way that he would have bowed to the Regent: deeply, sincerely. âYour Majesty,â said Guion.
bitch.
Damen had come here to learn what he could of the Regentâs plans, but there was only one question rising to his lips. âWho hurt Laurent at Charcy? Was it you?â âHe didnât tell you?â Damen had not spoken alone to Laurent since that night in the tent. âHe doesnât betray his friends.â
i love damen. he is giving laurent the distance he requested, despite it breaking his (damenâs heart), but heâs also still fiercely protective of laurent behind his back. to the extent that his questions about guion hurting laurent feel more important in the moment than tactical ones about the regent. laurent pretends not to care in an attempt to lie to himself, but damen is only pretending in front of laurent to respect his wishes. heâs not lying to himself about giving a shit, and hasnât even tried since like chapter 6 of book 2.
also - âhe doesnât betray his friendsâ implies that damen doesnât see laurentâs poor treatment of him as betrayal, because knowing the truth now about laurentâs awareness, damen would never expect laurent to have considered him a friend. this gives book 2âs âfriends? is that what we are?â a whole new layer of complexity.
'I captured him on his way to Charcy. He was brought to Fortaine, where he negotiated with me for his release. By the time he and I came to our arrangement, he had spent some time as a prisoner in the cells and had suffered a little accident to the shoulder.'
to be fair, i think this is what laurent would want guion to say, and might have even dictated to him exactly. anything else would make him sound weak. but damen knows laurent better than that, and can easily read between the lines.
âYou put Govart,â said Damen, âin a cell with Laurent?â
run.
âYes.â Guion spread his hands. âJust as I helped to bring about the coup in your country. Now, of course, you need my testimony to win back your throne. That is politics. The Prince understands that. It is why he has allied with you.â Guion smiled. âYour Majesty.â Damen made himself speak very calmly,
being a king sucks, you canât even throw hands with the guy who had your divorce husband tortured because said divorce husband is using said guy as a political asset
âDid the Regent know who I was?â âIf he did, having you sent to Vere was rather a miscalculation on his part, wasnât it?â âYes,â said Damen. He didnât lift his eyes from Guion. He watched the blood rise and mottle Guionâs cheeks. âIf the Regent knew who you were,â said Guion, âthen he hoped that when you arrived in Vere, the Prince would recognise you, and be provoked into a blunder. Either that, or he wanted the Prince to take you into his bed. The realisation of what heâd done then would kill him. How lucky for you that didnât happen,â Guion said.
the regent failed to anticipate the secret third option: laurent knowing exactly who damen was from the start, accidentally falling in love with him and semi-purposefully gaining a powerful ally, taking him into his bed despite the brother killing, having a messy breakup about it, but still remaining a powerful duo of world leaders unified in wanting to take him (the regent) down
âYou swore a sacred duty to hold the throne in trust for your Prince. Instead you turned on him, for power, for personal gain. What has that won you?â For the first time he saw something genuine flicker in Guionâs expression. âHe killed my son,â said Guion. âYou killed your son,â said Damen, âwhen you threw him into the path of the Regent.â
i think this has one of two meanings, diverging with the interpretation of guionâs line.
damen: you swore to help the prince, but then you turned your back on him for personal gain. so did you gain enough to justify that decision? guion: (briefly genuine) meaning #1: i lost my son when the regentâs manipulations resulted in his (aimericâs) death, so actually i lost something. meaning #2: the prince ended up being so mean to my son that he killed himself, so he wasn't deserving of my loyalty. damen: youâre the person most responsible for aimericâs death, because you let the regent use him as a political pawn and sexual object.
iâm really not sure if itâs meaning #1 or #2 here. #2 might not make sense at all, because itâs not guaranteed that anyone told guion the details of laurentâs reaction to aimericâs betrayalâit had only been damen, laurent, aimeric, and jord in the room, right?
regardless of guionâs meaning, damenâs response still stands. and at least it hurts guion emotionally, if not physically. itâs almost like damen is finding himself turning into laurent, acting the way laurent did in the court of vere. he canât take the direct route, so he has to be backhanded and cruel instead.
He had not dealt with Makedon. Round one came when Makedon refused to accept the extra rations available to his troops from Fortaine. Akielons didnât need pampering. If Veretians wished to indulge in all this extra food, they could do so. Before Damen could open his mouth to respond, Laurent announced that he would likewise change the provisions among his own troops, so that there would not be a disparity. In fact, everyone from soldiers to captains to kings across both troops would receive the same portion, and that portion would be determined by Makedon. Would Makedon inform them now what that portion was to be?
jesus christ laurent (affectionate)
Round two was the skirmish that broke out in the Akielon encampment: an Akielon with a bleeding nose, a Veretian with a broken arm, and Makedon smiling and saying that it had been no more than a friendly competition. Only a coward feared competition. He said it to Laurent. Laurent said that from this moment on, any Veretian who struck an Akielon would be executed. He trusted the honour of the Akielons, he said. Only a coward hit a man who wasnât allowed to hit back.
in a way, damen helped laurent with that one, since heâs the honorable akielion who told laurent the same thing in book 1.
It was like watching a boar try to take on the endless blue of the sky. Damen remembered how it felt to be coerced to Laurentâs will. Laurent had never needed to use force to make men obey him, just as he had never needed men to like him in order to get his way. Laurent got his way because when men tried to resist him, they found, sweetly outmanoeuvred, that they couldnât.
he thought to himself, with heart-eyes,
(i donât think anyone here is interpreting laurent as âsweetâ but you, damen)
In fact, the way Laurentâs men talked about their Prince now was not substantially different to the way that they had talked about him before: cold, ice-cold, except now he was cold enough to have fucked his brotherâs killer.
:)
No one was looking at Laurent. It wouldnât have mattered if they had been. His face showed nothing.
but damen looked at them not looking, and thought of laurent, because this is marlas theyâre talking about
âIâve been there before,â said Laurent. âThen youâre familiar with the area,â said Nikandros. âThat makes it easier.â âYes,â said Laurent.
He wanted . . . he didnât know what he wanted. For Laurent to have looked at him when Nikandros had announced that they would travel to the place where, six years ago, Damen had killed his brother.
messy messy
A rueful flicker of guilt: he knew that these men breaking curfew would not expect their King to appear and admonish them personally. His presence was ludicrously disproportionate to their crime, he thought.
damen kingship theme
âStand,â said Damen, âlike the men you think you are.â He was angry. The men, standing, perhaps did not recognise that. They didnât know the slow way that he came forward, or the calm tone of his voice. âTell me,â he said, âwhat it is you are doing here.â
wait no we are totally seeing the laurentification of damianos
The boy was badly bruised, and he could not stand under his own weight once the ropes were cut. Damen lowered him to the ground. More had been done to him than target practice. More had been done to him than a beating. They had put an iron cuff around his left wrist, like the gold cuff around his ownâlike the gold cuff around Laurentâs. Damen knew with a sickening feeling in his stomach exactly what had been done to this boy, and why. The boy didnât speak Akielon. He had no idea what was happening, or that he was safe. Damen began to speak to him in Veretian, slow, calming words, and after a moment the boyâs glazed eyes focused on him with something like understanding. The boy said, âTell the Prince I didnât fight back.â
oh fuck, laurent would be horrified by this. itâs like an echo of nicaise and aimericâs victimhood, and the only reason the boy hadnât fought back was laurentâs threat. that lack of self-defense goes against so much of laurentâs own values and behavior, and heâd be disturbed to realize how he had inadvertently disempowered this vulnerable person.
âMakedon of the north,â said Damen. âYou were a friend to my father. You fought with him for almost twenty years. That means a great deal to me. I respect your loyalty to him, as I respect your power and need your men. But if your soldiers harm a Veretian again, you will face me at the end of a sword.â
okayyyy so weâre starting to see a hint of where the kingship theme is goingâdamen getting past the whole âthis is how itâs always been done, so i have to do it the same wayâ idea, and approaching âwell iâm the king now, and this is what i think should happen insteadâ
âYou walk a fine line with Makedon,â Nikandros said, on his return to camp. âHe walks a fine line with me,â said Damen.
YES BITCH!!!
âBruising, a broken rib,â said Paschal. âShock.â âNo, I meantââ He broke off.
aw. damen really has come a long way, in terms of how he sees veretians. i think some of this is laurent-related, but i also think that damen is now extending the honor heâs always shown his own people to people he wouldnât have considered worth honoring before the seriesâs events.
âThank you,â said Damen. He heard himself continue, âI donât expectââ He stopped. âI know that I betrayed your trust, and lied to you about who I am. I donât expect you to forgive me for that.â He could feel the incongruity of the words, falling awkwardly between them. He felt strange, his breathing shallow.
i really appreciate paschalâs role in this story. a male figure in damen and laurentâs lives who cares about them both, but doesnât give a shit about their sex lives in the slightest. paschal has always been kind of grey re: the war between akielos and vere too, evaluating people based on their individual qualities rather than their political allegiances. thanks doctor dad, youâre a real one.
âWe all do what we have to,â said Paschal.
mysterious old man is mysteriousâŚ

What is Husk's form in Hazbin Hotel?
We all know Husk is a chimera, as he's clearly he's part cat and part bird. But I would like to posit the question of what kind of cat and bird is he?
(LONG HEADCANON EXPLANATION AHEAD)
Husk is drawn like your average tuxedo cat, so I can understand seeing him as just a regular house cat in form, but...
We know that Vivziepop was toying with the idea of making him Russian at one point, right?
Well... What cat is from Russia?
The Palla's Cat, also known as the Manul.
HEAR ME OUT!!!
Manuls are small wild cats with long and dense light gray fur. It's appearance always looks "grumpy", they're solitary animals, and are aggressive. They're poor runners because of their compact bodies(their shorter bodies help to give them a low profile when stalking prey) and instead of fleeing from threats they seek refuge.
We know husk is quite fluffy(and dark gray), though lots of regular house cats are too, but most have more slick and thin fur. Husk was originally very grumpy in the show, but he's grown to enjoy the company of some people in the hotel. Still a grump to others though. He's solitary and aggressive. He's short compared to Alastor and Angel Dust, but I'm pretty sure he's taller than Charlie. He runs in a silly, yet slow-ish way(episode 3: Husk when Niffty talks about bad boys in that club, and when Vaggie is throwing people off the roof), often retreating from conflict he doesn't want to be involved in yet not running very fast.
youtube
youtube
My evidence is not solid in any way at all, but I will headcanon what I damn well please.
Next, what kind of bird is he?
Well, comparing his wings to other winged characters:
We can see Lute and Vaggie have different colored wings now, but originally they had the same markings, which I ADORE as a slight nod to how she's changed from who she was, and is still angelic, maybe even more so than before.
But we can also see the difference between Husk's and their wings, theirs seem more powerful. More strong. Their wings remind me of hawks. I can imagine them using them to fly swiftly and without mercy down onto unsuspecting victims. Their wings end in sharper points, too. Husk's, on the other hand, seem more curved at the ends(NO I WILL NOT BE ADDING THE PICTURES OF HUSK'S WINGS BEING SHARP TOO, DONT COME AT ME I'M TRYING TO EXPLAIN MY HEADCANONS POORLY AND WITH LITTLE SUPPORTING EVIDENCE IN PEACE.)
And Husk's eyebrows as well? You know what kind of bird has semi-curved tips to their wings and sharp eyebrows?
A GREAT HORNED OWL!!
I take no criticism on my delusional observations. Husk is a mix between a Manul and a Great Horned Owl.

Jealous James
Requested by @im-kikimon - hope this is kind of what you were looking for :)
If anyone has requests or wants more of this AU please lmk I'm begging for feedback
Harriet - James' Pallas cat daemon
Gunnar - Ruby's badger daemon
Setting: the Beaufort twins are staying with the Bells after the mansion drama at the end of season one. (No real spoilers tho dw)
James listened to Kieran Rutherfordâs pitch for an Ascot-themed Easter garden party. As outfitters to the King, the Beaufort family attended Ascot every year, and his mother always made every best dressed list.
âAnd what? We usher in Lexington in a carriage? So many people at Maxton attend Ascot that people would see it for the rip-off it is. You want to ask actual nobility to picnic like the Queen Anne enclosure?â James scoffed.
Rutherford flushed and his shoulders crept up to his ears. âDo⌠Do you have a better idea?â
The whole room turned to James, who did not, in fact, have a better idea. âIâm saying we canât imitate something like that. We could keep the dress code and do a standard party - maybe themed with a flower type, hyacinths or something seasonal.â He shrugged, spinning the words out as they came to him.
Silence fell and the tension was thick as James had crushed Rutherfordâs hard work a second time. Lin nudged Ruby until she stood up, âUmâŚâ She hugged her notebook to her chest, and suddenly James felt embarrassed; she was clearly uncomfortable because heâd put her in an awkward position, again, without meaning to. Heâd just tried to be helpful. âI think youâve both got good points,â she nodded to herself as an idea formed, âmaybe you could work together on this and come back next week with some solid ideas?â
Both boys scowled at her, but she thought it would be good for them to sort out their issues. She smiled and nodded as if theyâd just agreed, âGreat. Lexington said heâs trying to arrange the keynote speaker so we donât have the final schedule yet, but they shouldnât be more than an hour, and if the lunch starts at twelve then we should expect to serve food around oneâohâfive.,â she started writing a vague outline on the paper pad, âcanapes around six, as itâs a low alcohol event, carriages at nine, latest.â
âŚ
James emailed Rutherford in the car after lacrosse practice:
Hi,
If you send me what youâve got for the garden party Iâll read it through and email you back with some notes.
James Beaufort
Sent from my iPhone
That should do it. He didnât particularly want to meet in person.
âŚ
Rutherford sent a link to a Pinterest board later that evening. No message, only the link. James opened it and he realised he hadnât just been an asshole to Ruby but to Rutherford as well. He could see the guy had put some serious effort into this, and that the Ascot theme was only a template rather than a theme.
He opened his email and started typing out an apology - ccâing Ruby.
âCoward,â Harriet accused him.
James remembered how Ruby had apologised to him on the lacrosse pitch and deleted the draft.
...
"Hey,â he walked up to Rutherford, âcan we talk about the garden party?â
Rutherford looked at the ground, âYeah.â
âGo onâ Harriet urged James with a glare.
âI apologise for being rude to you at the meeting. You clearly put a lot of work into the project and it was wrong of me to stomp on it like that.â
âYannow, it always annoys me in those stories when the nice girl picks the hot guy who treats her like shit over the boring guy who really likes her.â
âYikes,â James thought. He hadnât been expecting that. âYou think I treat her like shit?â
âYou have.â
James exhaled, âyep, deserved that one. Wait, what does he know?â
âButâŚâ Rutherford spoke up again, âI admit Iâm blindsided by your apology. I think we can at least try to work together.â He pushed his glasses further up his nose.
James was stunned. He nodded, âLibrary? Breaktime?âÂ
âYeah, I prefer the desk third from the door by the east window. Thereâs a squirrel drey in the tree right next to it.â
âThird desk from the door by the east window. Got it.â
James glanced at the empty desks near the windows; Rutherford wasnât here yet. He pulled out his phone and checked the compass app before walking to the eastern side. He sat down at the third from the door and opened up his tablet. Heâd made a folder in his sketchbook app last night of different things to go with the theme; invitations, drinks stands, signage, all sorts.
âDid you see the squirrel? Itâs a Eurasian red squirrel, pretty rare for around here.â
James looked up as Rutherford sat down and hoped that his disinterest in all things squirrel wasnât all over his face. âCouldnât spot it.â
âThat branch fork right there,â Rutherford leaned over the table and pointed to a nondescript cluster of twigs.
James nodded, âahhâ and angled his tablet so Rutherford could see it. âI liked the muted colours idea. That was clever. Lydia told me lupins are in season and they come in all sorts of colours, so I thought we could use those as a theme. I sketched an invitation.â He flicked through the app to his âsketchâ which had actually taken him ages.
Rutherford took it all in, âThat looks really good. Can you mass-produce the invitation?â
âNot by hand, but we could have them printed or send it as an e-invite.â
Rutherford scrunched his nose and shook his head as if James was an amateur, âPaper. Always paper. We send an email to remind them to RSVP anyway, no use clogging their inbox.â
âIf youâre okay with it Iâll send a photo to Ruby for her approval?â
âUh, better on the group chat, the food people might want to put extra details on there and I was thinking about asking Lexington if we could use the conservatory in case it rains. That way we can have a garden or indoor party easily.â
âGood idea.â James added a new plain slide titled, âconservatory party rainâ.
âAnd I wondered about an easter egg hunt. If you find an egg, you put your name on it and then you enter it into a raffle. Winner wins champagne or something.â
âYeah. I can see that working. Where would we get the prize?â
âIf you could design a fancy label, maybe we could re-label some champagne or something. Make it one of a kind.â
James nodded. Heâd been forced to endure many events with some of these parents; they love the challenge of something they canât buy. Rumour had it one of them bought a jar of honey for fifteen thousand pounds at a Tory charity gala. âThatâll do it. Iâll get on that. We have some easter eggs at my house from past Easter parties. Iâll ask the housekeeper if we can borrow those.â
Rutherford glanced at his watch, âIâve gotta go, but it was good chatting with you, Beaufort.â
James stuck out his hand, âJames. Thank you for being so decent about all this...â He made a vague gesture with his other hand.
Rutherford shook his hand, âKieran.â
A few days later:
(Callum is an OC, and Percy (and an SUV) are assigned to chauffeur the Bells and Beauforts around while the twins stay with them. Mortimer sees it as a way of keeping them supervised, but not underfoot.)
James bit back a cringe as he watched Kieran present his and Jamesâ party ideas to Ruby, (the whole committee was present, but he talked to Ruby as if they werenât) desperate for a âgood boyâ and a pat on the head or something. Pathetic.
When Ruby stood up, she thanked him âso muchâ for working with James on this, and how wonderful it was to have such âa cohesive committee working forwardâ - or something like that. James was focussed on the way Rutherford was looking at her, like she was the only thing that mattered in the whole world.
James knew on some level that Kieran Rutherford was somewhat of a decent bloke. Just one with an insane crush on his girlfriend. And it was starting to irritate him.
He felt Harriet pawing at his ankle, âshe verbally eviscerated you at Oxford,â she hissed, âkeep it to yourself.â
âAmazing how much you sound like him, like your fatherâ, James realised Ruby was right; that was probably how his father would have dealt with it.
âŚ
When Percy dropped Ruby and the twins back at the Bells, James got out of the back seat and slid into the front passenger seat. Percy regarded him calmly; he always spoke second.
âPercy. Could you give me some advice?â
Percy undid his seatbelt and shifted to fully face James, âCertainly, Sir.â
âThereâs a boy on the events committee who clearly fancies Ruby. And, Iâm⌠struggling to watch them interact.â
âYou feel jealous when he talks to Ruby?â Percy clarified.
Jealousy sounded childish to James. Straight out of one of those awful romance books Lydia used to read. But, he realised that was exactly it. Jealousy. He nodded.
âWhat do you need my advice on?â Percy wasnât sure if James needed any more advice;Â sometimes as a kid he just needed help identifying what he was feeling and then heâd work it out himself.
âLast time, with someone else, I lashed out, andâŚâ He didnât want to admit it, but if he could admit it to anyone, it was Percy, âRuby said I sounded like dad.â He looked at the textured dials as he held his head in shame.
âCommunication is the foundation of any relationship. You each need to communicate your feelings and be vulnerable with each-other. Tell her how youâre feeling, but be mindful that the committee is an obligation to her, and he might be too.â
James reflected on the interactions heâd seen between Ruby and Rutherford. âIâve never seen her reciprocate. Sheâs pretty closed off around him.â The more James thought, he realised Percy was probably right. The logical conclusion was that James didnât have anything to be jealous about, but⌠ugh, itâs still there. Just a bit.
âSir, have you officially asked her to be your girlfriend yet?â
James frowned and looked at Percy as if it was a forgone conclusion that she was.
Percy smiled softly. âAsk her.â
James nodded to himself. He could do that. Heâd get her flowers too; heâd seen how happy that one rose made her. Angus had too. âShould I ask her father before?â
âBefore you marry her, Sir.â Percy was really doing his best not to laugh, but the way James flushed really tested him.
âŚ
James bought some flowers on his way back from his next run with Callum. Angus gave him a knowing look as he crept into the kitchen with the bouquet.Â
âThese are for Ruby. Where can I hide them while I shower?â
âThereâs a vase in that cabinet,â Angus pointed to a cabinet. When James put it down on the counter Angus had a pair of scissors. âGiving a woman flowers like this,â he tugged at the wrapping paper, âis giving her a task. Giving them flowers in a vase means she just has to enjoy them.â
He proceeded to teach James how to cut and arrange flowers in a vase, making sure to add the plant food sachet to the water. âAs for hiding them, you can put them in our bedroom for a while with the door closed.â
âThank you.â He hadnât even thought about the âgiving her a taskâ bit. Now he knew Ruby would âonly have to enjoy themâ he was looking forward to asking her even more.
He ran upstairs and placed the vase just inside the doorframe of Helen and Angusâ bedroom before heading to the bathroom.
âŚ
âRubyâ
Ruby and Gunnar both looked up from her manga to see James in her bedroom doorway, hiding something behind his back, it was cute.
All the practice James had definitely not done in the shower left him. He came to stand right next to the bed, stalling for time.
âI havenât done this before, so I wanted to make sure weâre on the same page.â He saw Rubyâs brows furrow and quickly held the flowers out for her before she got the wrong idea, âWill you be my girlfriend?â
Rubyâs face was frozen in a delightfully surprised, open-mouthed smile, âYes!â She set the flowers on the bedside table and hugged him tightly. James hooked his chin over her head and breathed in deeply, glad it had gone well. Would have been a bit awkward if it hadnât. He saw Harriet and Gunnar curling up together on the bed and sighed as the extra feeling of intimacy washed over him.
âŚ
âRuby, can I ask you something?â
She gave him a look which screamed âyou just did.â
âIs there, or has there ever been anything between you and Kieran? Iâve seen the way he talks to you, and while Iâve never seen you reciprocate⌠I just wonderedâŚâ
Ruby shook her head easily, âNo. Nothing between us, I know heâs got a crush on me but hasnât made any moves and Iâm not interested in him. Heâll get the message, especially with you around.â
James was surprised that that was good enough for him. âGuess Percy was spot on on both accounts.â He thought to himself. Harriet only moved her head in a way that said âtold you soâ.

đ Cat Astrology - Pallas and Play
đ Spirituality is not just for humans. Pictured is Tama (ăăž), the famous stationmaster cat of Kishi Station in Japan, who after her death was enshrined in Shinto as a goddess of one of the local train lines she served. Every year, her successors still bring offerings to her shrine on the anniversary of her death...
đ Likewise, can cats be affected by astrology in the same way we can? It's just my observation, but if you know your cat's birthday you can use a birth chart calculator just like you would for yourself âĄ
Here are some deductions/speculations I have made about cats and astrology. I do not expect them to be accurate, they are just for fun! I am not a cat behaviorist, please do not use this as actual information about having a cat! However if you do wanna share your cat's chart or signs I may turn this into an actual thing lol đ
Pallas governs intuitive intelligence. In cats, this would have once meant hunting, but when with humans, this instinct translates to play âĄ
đ cats with Pallas in aries are proactive. may always initiate play with their owners. up early and probably have a secret double life taking place entirely before their human is awake âĄ
đ Pallas in taurus cats may have a lot of toys. they enjoy the physical world and tend to love their scratching post as well as lounging elegantly on the nearest sofa, piano, or windowsill âĄ
đ Pallas in gemini cats are like gemini humans in that they show two sides. may be playful but can need lots of stimulation. quick to catch their cat toys but very soft and gentle with their hooman âĄ
đ Pallas in cancer cats are very affectionate in play. may play and cuddle. enjoy playtime before bed or sharing their owner's space. A classic 'keyboard cat' who keeps you company while you work or study âĄ
đ cats with Pallas in Leo think they are top cat, chanelling that leo energy đŚ. loves attention from humans. generally won't entertain themselves but will want human attention and affection. star cats. great for a cat cafe! đ
đ Pallas in virgo cats are neat like virgo hoomans. smart and mentally active, they need loads of stimulation in play. may outsmart you ^_^
đ Pallas in libra cats need balance. work hard, play hard cats. need lots of naps and need variety in their life. holistic cats that benefit from enriched environments
đ Pallas in scorpio cats - most likely to trick their owners. may come and boop you when you are least expecting it.
đ cats with Pallas in Sagittarius are bold cats, and always have a strong sense of their environment. may take a deep interest in what you are doing.
đ Pallas in capricorn cats? homebodies, but different from cancer. tama's birthday is not known but she gives strong capricorn vibes as she takes a sedate position of responsibility â¤âĄââ§
đ Pallas in aquarius cats will surprise you when you least expect it. wake you up by kneading you. very likely to enjoy watching things out the window.
đ cats with Pallas in pisces are frequently found to form a loaf. loaf shapes are not sedentary, however. here, your cat is sensing the energy of the world around them. the loaf may be a precursor to some proper cuddles.
author's note: this is for fun only! I AM a proper astrologer though, self taught and not qualified but have been doing it for a decent 6 years and I find I'm reasonably accurate. you can find some of my serious posts here and here.
but obviously I haven't examined the birth charts of hundreds of cats to make these observations =_= otherwise not sure what I would be doing with my life. So yes, disclaimer, this is a bit of fun and mostly I couldn't resist my mad 3 am idea of a super long eternal Pallas Cat pun. I don't care if it's 2023. we need to bring that meme back. so please enjoy đŚ
đ Please also do not claim or repost without permission but feel free to reblog and fill my asks with anything astro related or if you have noticed your cat's sun or other sign fits them, I wanna know about it lol

Ok hear me out. Perfumer's known for her scents and perfumes and her super sensitive nose. Foxes IRL are known for marking their territory with their extremely pungent urine. Can you connect the dots and make Lena scent marking piss kink real for me?
first time writing piss kink pls be nice IT'S SO NAUGHTY
going with lena/erato/pallas this time!
cw: piss (duh)
...
Lena had known for a while that the greenery of the convalescent garden harbored an admirer from time to time. Sometimes she'd peer over her shoulder for something she'd forgotten and catch sight of the familiar pastel pink plumage that crowned the head of one with a fervent gaze.
Just as soon as she'd notice, however, she'd alight like a fearful canary and dip through the leaves.
"Pallas," Lena remarks to her near-asleep partner, fluttering her fingers through her bangs. "She's here again." With a bemused chuckle, she adds, "Looking a little afraid of the fox in the hen house, as it were."
"'Tis not fear that stays her hand, my lady, but thine ephemeral expression of care for the flowers, surely."
"Alright. Even if that's true...shouldn't she introduce herself properly? You're close, aren't you?"
"Verily, indeed. Alas, if only she could hold her liquor a little better-"
"And...she knows I'm alright with everything, right?"
"Most assuredly. The nature of our relationship, I took great care explaining. She knows she is welcomed. I simply thought it uncouth to goad her were she not amenable."
"Of course. Hm. Suppose you let her know we could speak, all of us together? Do you think she'd feel more at ease...beside a friend she knows well?"
"I shall make a correspondence with her posthaste. After, that is-my mid-morning rest."
"Fine. Rest well then."
Pallas laid down back where she had been sunning herself and spoke out the side of her mouth.
"...If you so feel any urges again-"
Lena giggled heartily, voice light as wind chimes, "Pallas, please. It's no fun if I tell you exactly when I'll do it again!"
They shared a laugh, and Lena went back to tending her flowers.
...
"I understand you wanted to talk to me?" Erato was speaking clearly, confidently, but Lena could see the tension in her shoulders.
"Mmhm, but perhaps I could say the same to you. I've seen you around the garden so often, and sensed your eyes on me more times than that." Lena props her backside against her desk, arms folded, one ankle crossed elegantly over the other. "I have an idea...what's on your mind." She sent a sidelong glance to Pallas with a gentle smile, "But I think I'd really like to just hear it from you."
"Lena..." Erato swallowed, "It's just that. For all the words that oft flow so easily from me, I can't find what to say when I'm before you. I can't describe you for the life of me, because what words I find aren't enough. But-" Erato's fingers trail the fabric edge hugging her chest, stroking towards her heart. "-I haven't courage enough to express myself another way."
"Hmm, I see. I think I understand." Lena sits herself on the edge of the desk fully. She does not miss the subtle part of Erato's mouth as she languidly crosses one leg clear over the other, but she only smiles fondly. "Would you be seeking some inspiration? Maybe you could both, come over here and kneel?" Lena draws a finger to her lips, "So I can tell you what good girls you are."
...
Lena's office becomes a haven for the three of them, at which she sits center as its goddess. Truthfully, she doesn't have such grandiose ideas of herself, but with Pallas and Erato repeating it in such earnest as they touch each other, touch her, from between her legs, she could stand to believe it.
If she could stand at all. They really are so naturally lyrical as they sing her praises, press kisses against her legs and thighs, and it's not long before Lena is ripping her own tights open to let Erato's silver tongue slide deep against her.
"Nnh-" Her legs flex, over Pallas' shoulder, around Erato's waist, and her head is going blank with disbelief that she gets to share so much affection with both of them at once. She's felt the yearning fill her stomach like the pit of an overripe peach for so long, and she knows it's been longer for Erato, and knows that her and Pallas have so much love to share.
Erato does something clever with her tongue and Lena gasps, arching and curling her fingers into her hair, and as she loses her balance Pallas is there with a hand at her back, so chivalrous to a fault, ready to keep her upright.
Lena is so close. She feels a sudden unbearable urge behind her cunt at the sight of Erato framed between her legs, and she grabs for her face, draws her up-
"Erato-"
She doesn't have to say another word. Erato pliantly tips her head back for the long, wet kiss that follows, bracing her hands on Lena's inner thighs to sit upright between her legs-
Lena cups the back of her neck and rocks herself forward, hands slipping, anchoring on Erato's shoulders to keep her breasts right against her cunt as they kiss, as the pressure mounts inside.
Such a pretty bird. Such a full, soft body.
"Aaahn-Lenaaa-" Erato pants into her mouth.
"Stay-stay like this-I want, I want to-" Lena murmurs desperately, and Erato presses tight and close, the front of her dress slipping down, the shape of her body plumping up against her-
With a poorly-contained cry, Lena is cumming, and some primordial part of her id releases everything at once.
She pisses all over Erato's breasts, the hot liquid soaking the delicate fabric until it clings to her body. Erato is cupping herself so closely against Lena that it pools in her modest cleavage for a few moments before dripping down, drenching the fabric clear to her navel.
Mine, she thinks, mine, mine, mine.
In a daze, she registers movement from between her legs, of both Pallas and Erato rising to their feet, the former taking her hand to help her dismount the desk.
They're all absolutely filthy, one way or another.
"Might I suggest-" Pallas gingerly wipes her mouth, then gestures towards the herbal spas, "-a wholesome group-bath?"
"Y-Yes. I think that's in order." Lena agrees, casting a glance in Erato's direction. Now she understands what it's like to be speechless, to worry about what to say or how to say it-
But Erato simply grins wide.
"Absolutely."
...
The three of them soak in the huge bath. Dried herbs and flowers perfume the water, and Lena sits with a slumbering head on each shoulder.
She thinks to herself that perhaps, when they do it again, she won't let them wash off so quickly.

Directors cut of any of your cat rodney fics! đ please?
Thanks very much for the ask, this was a lot of fun to revisit. Have never done a directorâs commentary before, so hope this is the right sort of thing.
Have opted for the first one, âA cat may look at a particle acceleratorâ - fic and commentary under the cut. If you just want the notes, skip to everything in italics.
So, this whole series was entirely @massharp1971âs fault.Â
We got into a conversation in the comments of another fic (In which Rodney is not a princess and John works through a few things) in which we agreed that Rodney was, in essence a cat. They then pointed me in the direction of the Pallas cat, who was so quintessentially Rodney that I broke off what I was writing and jumped fully on board the Cat!Rodney train:
âI knew it! I knew there was Ancient tech here! McKay is going to go greenâŚâ
âYeah, yeah, Langstrom, but save the victory dance for now. Just remember the golden rule is donâtâŚâ
[Langstrom is a name plucked from the Quarantine episode of Red Dwarf - for no particular reason, except that Red Dwarf was my childhood and I love that episode in particular. Plus, sheâs a great creepy villain, who undergoes a transformation of sorts, so there is a tenuous link.]
VSWOOSH!
[It took far, far too long to work out how to spell âVswoosh!â]
â⌠touch anything.â
âââ
âSergeant Holly, you werenât due back for another three hours. Is everything okay?â
âEverythingâs fine, Maâam.â Pause. âWell, mostly fine.â Pause. âItâs not fine.â
âSergeant. Whatâs in the bucket?â
âItâs more of a âwhoâs in the bucketâ really, Maâam.â
Pause.
âI see.â
Tap.
âDr McKay? Weâre going to need the Rehumanator.â
[The name was intended to give off fifties style Mad Scientist vibes. Every sci fi adventurer needs this particular bit of kit and, honestly, itâs surprising that it doesnât come as standard]
ââ-
Rodney stalked up and down the lab as Zelenka readied the cumbersome ray for use. If heâd had a tail, it would have been lashing with angry fervour.
[I wanted from the start to make Rodney an actual cat, who had - for practical reasons, mostly thumb-based - transformed himself into a human, rather than have him discover his inner cat through some form of Pegasus Standard Malarkey. Hence a bit of heavy foreshadowing.]
ââŚhow many times do we have to go over the most basic safety protocols? I mean, three penguins, two mountain lions and a gerbil wasnât enough? And who the hell gets themselves turned into Bouillabaisse soup?â
[this is a direct nod to the large number of - generally excellent - transformation fics in the fandom, though only the penguins are referencing stories that I knew existed. There may well be a gerbil Radek or Rodney or Teyla out there and Iâm sure the world would be a better place for it.
Bouillabaisse Soup is there, by the way, because itâs just fun to say (not so much to type)]
John rested a placating hand on Rodneyâs shoulder.
âYou did catch all the drips, did you, Sergeant?â
âSir, yes, sir!â
âHmm. He does smell more pleasant than the mountain lions, at least.â Rodney inhaled from the bucket with a slightly dreamy expression.
âEr, Doc, can I humbly request that you donât eat Dr Langstrom?â
As Rodney raised his hackles to full and started savaging Sergeant Holly for such an infamous suggestion - while casting the occasional longing look at the bucket - Zelenka stepped in with a hasty wave.
[more cat anvils being lobbed at you]
âRehumanator is fully charged and ready.â
Rodney rolled his eyes so far, they went all the way round and came back again.
âHonestly, Radek, I expect this sort of thing from the grunts and soft scientists, but you, of all people, should know better. Itâs not a Rehumanator, itâs an original DNA restoration deviceâŚâ
âA factory reset.â John put in, mostly to watch Rodney go purple.
âYes, yes, if you must reduce complex scientific principles to the most banal possible description.â
âI really must.â
[this is one of the most fun dynamics they have, when Rodney is being precise and wordy and John just cuts it down to essentials, with a huge smug smirk. Honestly, Rodney might just win in a smug-off, but John would be close]
Rodney glared at John. John smirked back. Radek carefully walked around them, so as not to get hit by a stray bolt of sexual tension. The last time that had happened, he hadnât left his quarters for a week.
But what a week.
[I swear, this sort of thing actually happens in the show. Extras and side characters were constantly being hauled off the set with Sexual Chemistry-Related Shrapnel Damage]
âPerhaps we should restore Dr Langstrom now, Rodney? Unless you feel that he has not yet exhausted all the possibilities inherent in being soup?â
Rodney tore his gaze reluctantly from Johnâs and nodded impatiently.
âYes, yes, of course. Do the thing.â He waved his hand at the ray and backed swiftly away from the bucket.
Zelenka aimed and fired.
VSWOOSH!
âOuch.â
It turned out that scientists and buckets, in combination, could bond with more of a tenacity than one might imagine, when picturing them separately. Two Marines held the bucket, while Rodney and John took one arm each and began to heave.
In hindsight, Zelenka should not have leaned down over the Rehumanator to get a better view of his bossâs contraband, but inarguably excellent, ass, with muscles all nicely taut in the act of straining.
[There is an SGA Fiction Law which states that any fic containing more than a few sentences of Rodney McKay, must also contain due reverence towards his ass. This is just me complying with the law]
VSWOOSH!
âSorry, sorry, my elbow slipped. But, is fine it should not do harm unless⌠ah. Now that is unexpected.â
The marines and John looked down at themselves, relieved to be in one piece. But sitting on the floor, with a glare like a rabid tiger, was the angriest, fluffiest grey cat they had ever seen.
[if you havenât seen a Pallas cat, go look one up now. It will warm your heart and also glare at you, like you just ate its kittens]
âââ
âSo let me get this straight. It wasnât a malfunction with the Rehumanator?â
âNo, no, was working perfectly. But, as Rodney explained,â Radek gave a nervous glance to the cat on the chair next to him, who was currently portraying the worldâs mightiest huff with every separate fur he possessed, âit does not actually turn you human. It merely undoes any transformation that you may have undergone.â
âSo, what are you saying?â Elizabeth glanced at Rodney and then Zelenka with incredulity. âYou mean that Rodney is not human? That heâs really a cat?â
Sheppard knew that couldnât be what Zelenka was saying. Except that, no, he was saying it. In those exact words.
âI have done all diagnostics, all possibilities for error. All it did, as the Colonel so eloquently put it, was a factory reset on Rodney. Therefore,â he shrugged. âRodney is cat.â
They all looked at Rodney. Rodney glared at all of them, before letting out a little kitty sigh, licking a paw and nodding slightly.
Sheppard blinked and turned pale. âExcuse me. I need to just⌠process a few things.â
[as a side note, I believe there must be at least one SGC form for accidental bestiality; though whether anyone has dared to fill it in is very doubtful]
Rodney tried to follow but he was firmly scooped up and placed - to his absolute horror and indignation - in an improvised and very secure cat basket, which all of Rodneyâs science team had worked together to make, with an unusual swiftness and sense of unity.
âSorry, Rodney, but we need to get you checked out at the infirmary.â
âActually, Dr Weir⌠I believe that Dr Sanders has a degree in veterinary scienceâŚâ
The very secure cat basket proved to fold like so much tissue paper, in the face of the lashing of vengeful claws.
ââ
âCarson, could you be on the alert for three scientists and two marines headed your way with multiple lacerations, bites and one severe fur allergy?â
âââ
âAtlantis General Notice: Should anyone spot a largish, extremely fluffy cat in your vicinity, please report it immediately. Do not, repeat, do not, approach the animal or attempt to capture it. Nor, and this is very important, should you make kissy faces at the cat or use phrases like âHere Tiddles!â or âWhoâs a little cutie pie, then?â. The infirmary is rapidly running out of bandaids.â
[I ran through several alternate cutesie cat names (which I canât remember now but probably were along the lines of FluffyBoots or Snugglekins) but ultimately âTiddlesâ had just the right quality of banality and depressing indignity]
ââ-
âAtlantis General Notice: Colonel Sheppard has asked me to also point out that the cat should not be harmed in any way. Or, I quote, âif anyone harms so much as a whisker on his angry little face, they will spend the rest of their lives, and afterlives, regretting that they were ever born.â
[Sheppard will, naturally, protect Rodney under any circumstances and as any species, no matter the cost - and, frankly, I think he enjoys being just that much of an ethically flexible badass]Â
ââ-
âAtlantis General Notice: Seriously, stop it with the pet names. Weâre now down to two Spiderman bandaids and a roll of sellotape.
[the author does not recommend that you tend your wounds with sellotape and refuses to be held responsible for any subsequent physical and emotional distress consequent on trying]
âââ
Sightings of Rodney ceased after less than a day. It wasnât until two days later that he returned: bipedal, distinctly less fluffy and wearing an improvised toga made of bedlinen.
Elizabeth allowed him to retrieve a uniform before the debriefing.
âSo, I think you can understand that we have some questionsâŚâ
Rodney scowled, his expression so like his cat self that, for a moment, the whole Command staff thought he had reverted and backed off about a foot.
âOkay, look. Yes, I was born a cat. Obviously. And I would go so far as to say that I was a very good cat. For about six months, I lived a happy, catly life, deducing natural laws from first principles, studying the stars and enjoying the benefits of an incredibly flexible tongue and spine. Until I realised that, for all my incredible intellect, the stupid prejudices and species-centricity of humanity was going to make it impossible for me to ever win a Nobel prize.
So, I worked for weeks on my own personal transformation ray, which, let me tell you, was no picnic with paws. But, you know,â Rodney preened smugly, âgenius.â
[or, in other words, the author couldnât really think of a method of complex DNA-shuffling machine-construction by a kitten and used the âget out of explanations free card]
He leaned back on the chair, absently lifting his hand to his mouth then hastily lowering it, just before it met his gently poking tongue.
âAnyway. I was still pretty young, from a human perspective, at that point, so I smuggled myself to Canada, got adopted and threw all of my energy and time into science. And also, quite a lot of batting at scrunched up paper for the first two years, but some habits are hard to shake.â
[I considered whether to make Jeannie a cat too, but ultimately decided to just go simple. At this point in the series, at least, therefore, she doesnât realise that her brother is actually a cat. I donât know whether Rodneyâs been brave enough to risk that conversation since]
Rodney crossed his arms and scowled fiercely at everyone.
âSo, how did you turn back?â Sheppard asked.
Rodney sighed.
âApparently you werenât listening. I built a transformation ray at the age of six months. And that was with the drawback of the lack of materials to be found on the rocky steppes of my birthplace. You would not believe how hard it was to source a DNA reconstituting module⌠well, anyway. Short answer, Iâm a genius and Atlantis is chock full of weird stuff. The only reason it took me so long was that itâs also surprisingly full of string and⌠well, thatâs not important either.â
[the birth of Cat!Rodneyâs fascination with string, which all cats I have known have been greatly enamoured with and scientists are rather keen on in general too]
âSo, are you planning on staying as a human, now?â
Rodney waved his hand vaguely. âYes, yes. It was⌠not wholly unpleasant to connect with my roots, but the lack of opposable thumbs and intelligible speech would always be a drawback. Though some of my scientists seem to manageâŚâ
Elizabeth stepped in before he could get going on a full rant.
âWell, Iâm sure that weâll all be glad to have you back. Though, you might find that people need a little time for adjustment.â
Rodney snorted. âWhatâs to adjust? Iâm exactly the same as I always was, except now everyone knows that my baby pictures are cuter than theirs.â
[some kind person left a link to a Pallas kitten on the last fic in the series, which should definitely be checked out if anyone doubts this]
Sheppard nodded. âCanât argue with that.â
The meeting adjourned shortly afterwards.
ââ-
âSo, er, RodneyâŚâ
Rodney sighed and removed his hand from Johnâs pants.
âThis whole interspecies sex thing is freaking you out, isnât it?â
[despite this essentially being crack, I felt this whole issue had to be addressed a bit, if only to then sweep it firmly under the carpet]
John missed Rodneyâs hand but he felt they probably did need to discuss the issue.
âWell, yeah. Kinda.â
âOkay, so look. I donât do my DNA alteration by halves. Iâm completely physically human. Ask Carson. I would never have been allowed on the expedition otherwise.â
âSoâŚâ
âSo, sleeping with me is not bestiality, nor does it make you a furry, if thatâs a concern for you. It just means you have excellent taste.â
John considered for a moment and then popped Rodneyâs hand back into his boxers.
âWell, okay then.â
âââ
âSo, Rodney. Ever thought about having kittens?â
âI will end you in your sleep, Sheppard.â
âGoodnight, Rodney.â
âGoodnight.â
ââ-
And, at least, now John knew why Rodney had always purred after sex.
[this whole fic took about an hour to write (plus some polishing time afterwards) and the longest part of that was trying to end it; which is something that goes for almost all my stories. It almost finished with Goodnight, but that just felt too abrupt; fortunately I think Rodney is easy to imagine as a happy post-coital purrer, without stretching disbelief too far. Because, you know, this is a very serious fic đ]
This series is one of my favourites to write, because itâs full of love and support from everyone, and because I love the sheer goofiness of it all, with, hopefully, a lot of heart at the centre.
And because cats. You can never have too much cat.
Appreciate the ask! đ

Albaâs Natal with Hypothetical Ascendant
If anyone gets a birth time for her please send it to me and I can update the reading. đ
Alba was born on July 10, 1997 in Lisbon Portugal at an unknown time which will vex me endlessly. However, we are lucky that the moon didnât change signs that day and that the presumed time I have given her works ok. I figured since she is very sexualized a scorpio midheaven would fit her. It would also hit Chrisâ moon, which is a big deal. This layout puts her part of fortune at 11° conjunct her MC which would mean she is very lucky expressing her Scorpio traits. This is true about her. Here is what that looks like. (The unknown birth time changes where the houses are but her planets are still in the signs you see no matter what.)
She is a Cancer sun and a Virgo moon conjunct her North Node. Her South Node in Pisces means sheâs very comfortable with blurred lines and fantasy. She came from a past life of messiness and imagination and now she is meant to move towards order, service, and grounding. There are two interesting things going on with that. The first is her moon. Itâs conjunct her North Node no matter what time she was born. The earliest moon position is at 15° and the latest is at 26°. Thatâs a solid conjunction to the Node. The moon is her inner world and her emotions. She is meant to move towards her emotions and nurture her feelings. She doesnât like to though. The North Node is hard to move towards and she has Lilith in sign. Sheâs rebellious. She wants to act out. She may even see self care as rebellion.Â
Her Mercury is in Leo, along with her Venus. She likes to be seen in partnerships and she finds her voice there. Her Sun is in Cancer, the nurturing and crabby sign. Itâs at 18°. 18 is the Moon card in tarot. Things that are hidden. The animalistic parts of us. The Moon card is ruled by Pisces, her South Node. If I am correct in her birth time her moon is on her DC in the sixth house. This means that her daily tasks are to nurture others and thatâs how she is in relationships of any kind. Itâs squaring her Mars and Saturn and inconjunct her Jupiter. She was taught to be this way. She doesnât like it. She wants to be fiery and aggressive like her Mercury. The first house is tragic in this layout. Neptune retrograde conjunct Pallas Athena, the wise warrior, retrograde in Capricorn. Capricorn is the physical body, the first house is the identity. Neptune retrograde is illusions and imagination turned inward. She believes her identity comes from her body, that itâs her source of power. She thinks her sexuality is a weapon and her greatest asset. Uranus and Jupiter in 1st Aquarius means sheâs seen by society online, and she has a lot of luck with that. Turned inward in the 1st they are her identity. She feels lucky and connected to society when sheâs perceived as a femme fatale. Warrior nun was great for her. She was in fact extremely lucky doing that. These placements are in opposition to her 7th house placements. She wants to be in partnerships, not necessarily romantic but she feels beautiful and likes the way she looks when with others. With Juno there she wants to be a trophy wife. She is destined to be because of her vertex there, also.Â
Her Pluto is in Sagittarius trining her Mercury and sextile her 1st house internet babe placements. Pluto is control and transformation, another retrograde, in her 10th house of career. She likes the setup she has with Justin and her internet image. Itâs the best of both of her desires, to be seen as attractive and desirable and to be part of a partnership. Itâs turned inward though so itâs the perception of control, not actual control. What sheâs really meant to be doing is her 8th house placements, chasing her inner feelings and being rebellious by taking care of herself. Interesting that. Mars is there too in 8th Libra encouraging her to be fair to her needs and use her voice to be beautiful. Mars is at 10° which is the number of fulfilment. Itâs connected to Mercury and Uranus positively. Sheâs meant to be online speaking her mind, but the moon is trine Neptune so she thinks being a sexy pinup is the way to go.Â
Sheâs going to go through a transformation in life where she stops being an object and starts having a voice. Itâs quite beautiful actually. Itâs going to suck and she has a lot of karma but itâs going to be beautiful. That mars is in opposition to her Saturn in the 3rd. Itâs wide orb but that Eris, Saturn, Vesta, in Aries was the people in her upbringing teaching her to fight for them, to exist for them, to hold a candle for them. It squares both her Sun and Neptune. They were the ones who taught her that her value came in service to others, not in the healthy giving way but in the âsell your body online thatâs the value you have as a partner to menâ kinda way. Fucking disgusting. Sheâs gonna have to unlearn a lot of what she was taught growing up but I think sheâll get there. She has the tools. Those Leo placements in opposition to the fist house tell me she does know her real worth and speaks her mind. Her Chiron is in Libra in the 9th. She needs to learn fairness, she never felt treated fairly, but once she learns it she will become its champion. Itâs gonna be good. She just needs time to see and embrace it.Â

can you please make more synastry observations and asteroid ones too pleaseee? i miss you they were soo entertaining to read
working well together in synastry and composite
i'm going to work off of what i already have posted (no asteroids discussed after this post will be included or added after the fact). finally, i would like to state that NO TWO CHARTS ARE THE SAME. what i am about to list out does not mean you will for sure need these exact things (or all of these things) to be shy, nervous, and/or anxious around one another. if you don't understand my thought process, feel free to dm me with questions!
libra (7°, 19°) or aquarius (11°, 23°) venus/mars and/or 7h libra (7°, 19°) or aquarius (11°, 23°)
these two can be partners in crime and great colleagues; very little gets in the way of them accomplishing a task. they have a sort of dance they do when working together - they don't need to communicate to get the work done.
7h venus
this is great if you guys work together long term - it is like having a co-ownership at a business or partnership at the same firm. venus person loves 7h person and 7h person looks at venus person as if they are their true equal.
11h libra (7°, 19°) or aquarius (11°, 23°)
this is just very easy alliance and partnership. these two cooperate well with one another.
11h venus
these are allies - it is a ride-or-die connection that these two have it is very rare that either person will turn against each other. venus person will treat 11h person as their only friend, while 11h person will be extremely loyal and wishes to help the venus person to be the best version of themselves possible.
11h neptune
this is one of those unlikely alliances that just end up working well together. neptune person sees 11h person's vision and wants to help them come true, while 11h person sees the beauty in idealist and optimistic neptune person.
11h uranus
these people are unstoppable; they will do whatever it takes to make it happen. 11h person see eye to eye with innovative uranus person. uranus person likes that 11h person is great at having the connections it takes to move their projects forward.
armstrong (asteroid 6469) positively aspecting aldrin (asteroid 6470)
these two can go where no one has before - they are willing to do what people have never attempted before. armstrong person relies on aldrin person to be the brains of the operation, while aldrin person relies on the armstrong person to do the heavily lifting. together they are comfortable trying new and improbable things.
donar (2176) / thora (299) positively aspecting loke (4862)
these two will attempt to fool the world around them. donor/thora person is often talked into something silly/foolish by loke person. loke person is the mastermind of the project, while donor/thora person is the muscle power to make it happen.
prometheus (1809) positively aspecting athene (881) / pallas (2)
together these two can create something amazing. prometheus person creates the bare bones of their project, while athene/pallas person breaths life into it and gives it character.
vergilius (asteroid 2798) positively aspecting dante (asteroid 2999)
vergilius person will protect dante person at all costs. vergilius person is a sort of guide, confidant, and sage for dante person. dante person looks up to and greatly appreciates vergilius person. together they can traverse even the most difficult terrains.

đĽAstrology Observations Pt.3đĽ
I hope you guys will enjoy another round of astro notes in my blog lolâ¨đâ¨đ
â ď¸Sidenoteâ ď¸: Please take this with a grain of salt for not all of my personal observations will resonate you entirely.
đĽFire/Scorpio placements love playing with fire and have a huge fascination for it.
(Btw stream Playing With Fire by Blackpink guys, I love this song soooo muchđđ)
âĄNeptune in the 10th house may not be able to know what to do in life and are oftentimes confused on what career/job to choose for their future.
đĽNeptune in the 3rd house can indicate someone who uses figures of speech as their way of expressing themselves creatively
âĄHow's your sleeping schedule, Gemini/Sagittarius Suns? đ¤Łđ¤Łđ¤Ł Am calling you out @emeraldice đ
đĽMars in harsh aspects with Neptune can indicate someone who cope anger issues unhealthily by escaping reality and sleeping excessively.
(I got this info from @hillarysss during one of her events before. If you aren't familiar with her, go check her blog out! She does tarot reading and make astro related posts as well. They are really interestingâ¨â¨)
âĄ11th house stellium people are best friend material and they tend to be well-liked by others because they are truly amazingđ
đĽEarth/Air Suns tend to be night owls and they really love reading at night with a lamp or candle as their source of light
âĄPisces placements can just be as perfectionistic as their sister sign, Virgo. But they tend to keep it hidden.
đĽAries/Pisces/Cancer Venusians love tight hugs and they probably have a lot of stuff toysđ§¸đ§¸
âĄLibra and Capricorn Suns are underrated crackheads istg plssssss they are so hilarious
đĽAsteroid Vesta in Cancer tend to hide away from others when they feel like they are taken for granted. They are true care givers and are willing to carry the burden of others in attempt to heal them but when they aren't appreciated they tend to fade away and think things through before coming back to normal again.
âĄLibra/Leo placements are fashion icons, they are really fashionable and have great tastes when it comes to how they style themselves. You guys should try modelingđâ¨đâ¨
đĽI've noticed Aquarius risings are prone to being copied by others. Yes, many Aquarius risings I met have a different and original ways of doing things and with that, many people tend to copy them and I can tell how annoyed they are already from thisđ
âĄPisces is a tactful sign and are aware of other's feelings but if you have your mercury in Aries you may be more frank and confrontational. This can also apply to Tauruses who have their mercury in Aries.
đĽVice versa as well if you are an Aries sun with a Pisces Mercury
âĄSagittarius Sun/Moon are smooth talkers, it's so impressive. They do really know how to say the right things at the right time. This can also apply to Mercury in harmonious aspects with Venus đ
GIF: TWICEđĽYes or YesđĽMomo
đĽSun in 12H/Sun-Neptune/Moon-Neptune/12H stellium/Neptune dominant/Water Rising/Sun in 4H/Neptune in 1H/Pisces dominant can easily or possibly remember their dreams detail by detail and tend to write them on a piece of paper or a memo pad so they won't forget after.
âĄRandom theory! I have this thought about why Leo Sun/Rising act the way they are (note: this is just a theory! Everything matters in your chart and aspects are important):
1. During their childhood years they were always loved and taken cared by their family and relatives. Always pampered and treated well and is most likely the famous sibling among their other siblings. Which is why Leos tend to be joyful and are very confident or...
2. During their childhood years, they didn't receive much attention from their family and lack emotional support from them. They can also be distant with their own relatives and tend to be the outcast. This leads Leos to rely on themselves and be more independent which guides them to being courageous and self-aware of themselves (Scorpio in the 4th house for Leo risings)
Whether 1 or 2 you are still loveableđĽşđđ
đĽAir/Water/Sagittarius/Virgo Suns tend to malfunction. Yes, we are highly aware that sometimes we just can't process anything so we just shut down out of nowhere and sometimes it can be totally awkward especially if we happen to malfunction in publicđđđ
*Remembers the time when I malfunctioned and was just staring blankly at my food for 3 minutes straight and my family thought I was possessedđŹ*
âĄMercury in 1st house are just as talkative as Gemini mercuries. They are really chatty people and are also very witty.
đĽVirgo moons are really worried if a task or project isn't finished yet even if they are resting. It bothers us to the point we would be thinking about it during our whole break time instead of chilling.
âĄVirgo placements tend to enjoy making lots of lists and schedules because this is their way to remember things and feel organized so they won't panic later (As a Virgo Moon, I have a birthday list lol so I won't be able to forget someone's special day and I also tend to make lists for my assignments and cross them out when am finished)
đĽAsteroid Pallas in Leo can relieve stress through drawing, singing, or dancing. It's their way of calming themselves and this can help them feel a sense of inner peace.
âĄIf I were to pick which MBTI type would resonate with Aquarius more, I would say ENFJ. Both are altruistic, humanitarians, great networkers, may have a hero complex, future-oriented, and definitely does not want one person to be left behind from a group.
đĽVirgo Ascendant in a composite chart can project the partners as reliable and undemonstrative. People would assume you guys are together for practical reasonings (such as being together to work on a project) instead of actual relationship or friendship bonding.
âĄCapricorn(both men and women) + business suits = đĽđĽđĽ
đĽFire Sun/Rising đ¤ Not giving a fuck about the deadline of a task and that the teacher should be thankful they passed it LMAO đđľ
Thanks for the assistance @venusfun đ and thank you as well @hillarysss for giving me the permission to use one of your works to inform others about a specific aspectđâ¨đ⨠AND TO ALL THE ASTROLOGERS WHO ARE SUPPORTING ME I LOVE YOU GUYS, YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE đłđšđšđšđđ

Alright ok letâs talk about it
đŻ Veiling in witchcraft & Paganism đŻ
(This is gonna be a long post , set into âŚ.sections )
What is veiling:
Veiling is the act of a person/persons covering their head , body , or face .
Veiling has been around for centuries and continues to be seen all over the world in different religions, ethnicities, and cultures .
Who can veil? Depends on the religion or culture , in some cultures and religions only women veil , in other both men and women veil .
Today Iâll be talking about pagan and witch craft veiling , in witchcraft ANYBODY can veil (women, men, non-binaries) , in paganism typically only women would veil but once again ANYBODY can veil in paganism.
Why?
Thatâs a question that has a different answer for everybody that wears a veil , some for religion and god , some for culture , some modesty , some because they choose to . We shouldnât judge others on their choice of veil , how/if they choose to wear it or why .
In witchcraft, some veil for protection, to keep their energy their own , to protect their crown , others because they want to .
In paganism, veiling is to show respect or devotion to the gods/goddesses, to protect energy, because they were called to , or because they want to
What is paganism?
In short , paganism is a coverall term for a religion that is nature based and doesnât follow Abrahamic beliefs. Because there is no âholy bookâ in paganism we all draw our own paths and beliefs from the research and source material we have , like most if not all religions paganism isnât a âone size fits allâ type deal . Some pagans work with gods/goddesses, others donât and just worship/pray to/ leave offerings too , both is ok .
Not every pagan is a witch and not every witch is pagan .
The best thing to do like with anything is do your own research and come to your own beliefs and conclusions.
Veils :
There are many many many different types and styles of veils throughout the world , some are ok to use and others are not .
In witchcraft anything can be used as a veil , hats, hoods, bandannas , headbands , scarfs
In paganism itâs a little bit different, some pagans want a full veil others donât , I personally go for a full veil where all my hair is covered , some styles pagans wear are âhijabâ styles , Greek veil style called himation , as well as another Greek style called a palla (which is a large piece of fabric that is draped around the body and head )
Important to note , in paganism veils can be worn with un modest dress , same for witchcraft, I personally do dress modestly when wearing a veil because you will appear Muslim , and out of respect for Muslim women and cultures I dress modestly even though I donât have too.
Many witches and pagans veil for , Lady Hestia .
Face veils:
Face veils in paganism are similar to the âNiqabâ , Greek face veils are called âTegidionâ (tag-a-de-on) , which literally translates to âlittle roofâ and would be worn over the face and pushed back in conversation (picture included below)
Not all witches or pagans wear tegidion , sometimes you need an extra layer of protection or veil , itâs your choice , Iâve only wore tegidion a few times , mostly on days when I need extra protection or days the veil is thinner like in the fall months , or anytime I feel called too .
When wearing a face veil DO dress modestly because once again you will appear Muslim and out of respect for Muslims and Islam , please dress in a appropriate manner :)
Ending notes:
For some veiling is for modesty, for others protection, for some because they choose it , all are ok all are great , be respectful of everyoneâs choice .
My personal favorite style of veiling is the himation , I do really enjoy wearing Tegidion too but Iâm not that confident to wear it every day yet and thatâs cool , but I wear hijab style the most because itâs easiest to just grab and go lol
Some veil everyday , some part time , I personally veil anytime I leave the house , unlike in Islam, in paganism and witchcraft who can and canât see my hair is entirely up to me , personally only close friends and family members can see my hair , anyone whoâs energy is immaculate lol , but seriously I veil for my gods and goddesses and for protection, not everyone gets the luxury of seeing me without my veil .
Remember do your own research, donât be afraid to ask other witches and pagans questions, draw your own beliefs and conclusions, respect everybodyâs religion and veil choices , be safe , veiling is for everyone, blessed be .

11. â...did you just sniff me?â for percabeth pretty please đđ¤đ¤đ¤
Heya! Iâm finally here to come back to this request đđ It took me only a little bit in comparison to other requests, but I'm here!
Also since @percyheartsannabeth, @skaterannabeth and @not-optimistic-petrol-biscuit had asked about fluff. Here you go... Kinda? đŹ Anyway. Here's a monster sneak peek into may I introduce you to my beloved wife? đ
It took me all day yesterday, but I managed to pump out 11k words. That's a record for a single session in one day (with like two breaks). And yes, that is still not the entire chapter. Here are roughly 9,2k for you to consume!
TW: alcohol, overbearing relatives not minding their own business, a tiny section talking about domestic abuse and Athena and Frederick Chase ain't shit but that's nothing new. Poseidon too, for once. Enjoy!
may I introduce you to my beloved wife?
(*absolutely not proof-read, my bad)
Annabeth sighed. You can do this. You can do this. Youâve already finished the week. Think about the money. Think about the move to California. Push through this day and next week, think about the money and the minute youâll hand your termination in. She wanted to splash some water up her face, but the makeup that tinted her lips in a luscious rose and added some bronze to her high cheekbones was too expensive to be washed off and hastily reapplied.
It was pre-Dionysus Day, which meant it was merely the calm before the storm. The first sparkling sip of an impending disaster waiting to rollover the roomy Greek villa Percy forced her to stay in. Well not really forced. Forced and bribed her to stay in. That made it sound slightly better. Just think of the one-hundred seventy-five dollars heâs going to transfer into your bank account for your new start in California. I should renegotiate. California is also expensive. Make it two-hundred fifty thousand.
The tall blonde looked at her reflection in the mirror. A young woman full of life was the first thing she had seen in the morning but now she looked tired and annoyed, just how she felt. Something crashed in one of the dozens of rooms next to her and people laughed. Annabeth sighed again. It was the only thing she could do, otherwise she would scream like a banshee, making sure that at least Hermes and Prometheus would check her, if it wasnât for Percy stuffing socks into her mouth to make her shut up before they got to her. The majority of his Greek relatives had been lovely if not terribly nosy and overbearing. It was the opposite of her family. His was warm and chaotic and for the most part welcoming. Hers? Cold, apathetic, disapproving of everything she did. She had no family in comparison, and neither would she want to compare this wholesome messy bunch to the cold-hearted Athena Pallas and the monster that was Friedrich Chase.
Annabeth respected Hera and Hestia, she definitely side-eyed Aphrodite who was cheating on her husband and she would definitely stay away from Zeus. Crossing paths with him occasionally in the New York office of Atlantic INC. was terrible, seeing him openly be flirty and loosen up during a forced trip was way worse.
This was a bad idea and I have a terrible feeling about this. The burgundy wrap dress that hugged her skin was soft and light but in the Thessalian heat it felt like a sticky cocoon caging her. She wasnât a beautiful butterfly, ready to burst out and wow everyone. Neither was she a moth drawn to a flame. She was a bug that had been sprayed by Percy with a pesticide, wrapped in toxic chemicals which were slowly dissolving her body, piece by piece.
A knock shoved the horrendous image inside of her head aside. âYes?â she asked with a firm voice. Too firm with a hint of annoyance, but she was not a professional actress and could not switch her emotions off as she pleased. She was a junior marketing manager for Christâs sake. Not for much longer. Only two more monthsâŚ
Percy opened the door. âAre you ready?â he asked with his usual pleasant baritone reaching her ear.
He wore light linen pants that hugged his legs loosely and a light blue shirt with the first buttons opened up. She could see his defined chest and the swirls of black hair peeking through. The hair was styled into a disheveled curly mess which suited him way better than the gelled back corporate look and he forgot to trim his beard like the day before. Annabeth couldnât deny what she saw â her tormentor was a very attractive man.
âDo you want to bail?â His sea-green eyes darkened a shade. Worry flashed through them.
Annabeth exhaled sharply for the last time. âI wish I could but then Iâd leave you without a fiancĂŠ,â she smiled through the pain.
Her glance found her reflection again. The topknot was still intact, and a few strands carefully framed her heart-shaped face. She looked perfect on the outside and she wanted to commit manslaughter in the inside.
âLetâs get over with it,â Percy sighed and stretched his hand out. It seemed like Percy was the one that would rather bail.
Annabeth took it without any complaint. She was the happy girlfriend soon-to-be-wife and holding hands was way better than being forced into kissing him during Sports Day. The Theodoropoulos family truly had planned activity after activity during those two weeks in winter.
âOh!â Sally peeked into the bathroom and saw her son holding Annabethâs hand.
âThere you are! Is everything okay, mija?â she asked with her sweet Dominican accent and looked at Annabeth.
Annabeth automatically smiled back. Sally was the mother she never had, and it broke her heart crumble by crumble by the sheer charade Percy and she were forced to display for the next six days. Sally Jackson deserved the best. She certainly didnât deserve being deceived and lied to by her terrible son and his tag-a-long coworker.
âYes, Percy was just making sure weâre arriving on time.â Annabeth got on her toes and placed a soft kiss on Percyâs stubbled cheek. It tickled but by now she had gotten used to it.
He rolled his eyes, smiled at his mother, nonetheless. Sallyâs eyes sparkled and she clapped, clutching her hands tightly. âYou donât know how proud youâre making me, mijo,â she then said teary-eyed.
âYou finally found a great girl and she is standing next to you.â Sally wiped a tear away and the awful feeling that sat on Annabethâs chest and made everything heavier, amplified by a thousand times.
This was way worse than being referred to as the woman that would bear him three to five children presuming with the first one sired on this current vacation by Ares. Yes, Annabeth wanted two children at max, but not definitely now. She was twenty-eight and in the prime of her life! Note: Percy would certainly not be the father of said two children. Unruly blond waves and a mischievous grin blitzed through her head. Pale blue eyes came back from the deepest pit of her memory. Luke. Fuck no, that was even worse than Percy. His betrayal⌠Annabeth tried to shake the memory off and focused on the ongoing situation in front of her.
Sally truly hoped her son found love and not a quick fling. Oh shit, Annabeth thought and looked up to Percy whose face expressed similar thoughts. His conscience nibbled and guilt flooded his body.
âMamĂĄ,â Percy began and released Annabethâs hand in order to grasp the older womanâs shoulder.
Sally brushed his large hands off. âNo, no! Off you go! You younglings should be downstairs celebrating your reunion with the entire side of Poseidonâs family.â
Annabeth appreciated the fact that Sally was invited and flown out each winter holiday by the Theodoropoulosâ. Despite having been divorced from Poseidon for over twenty years, she was still a popular and welcomed guest, not just because of her sonâs attachment to the Greek side and his tied division of the Greek family company.
Sally gave each of them a last smile before entering the womenâs bathroom. Percy exhaled and pinched his nose. After ten seconds he released the nose and looked back at Annabeth. âReady?â he asked a final time. Annabeth nodded.
The loud singing, yelling and talking that had been muffled by the bathroom hit her by a tenfold. The place had all the Mamma Mia vibes without the fun singing four days ago. Not anymore, as drunk relatives hit up the shore with loud music and talked loudly in their Pontic Greek dialect.
As the couple descended the stairs and walked through the parlor, a new wave of guests arrived at the same time. Three people that have just entered early adulthood looked up to them. Two men, one blond with a stoic face and bronzed skin, the other was shorter with spiky black hair and a beautiful grin on his lips. The woman next to him was the tallest out of the trio and possessed a high ponytail that would leave Ariana Grande dying out of envy. The dyed lilac hair swung around and nearly reached the middle of her thighs, meaning the hair was even longer without its tight prison on top.
âThanatos, Zagreus, Megaera!â greeted Percy and gave each one of them a rib crushing bear hug. They looked pleasantly surprised at seeing Percy being accompanied by a pretty woman his age. It seems like the proposal didnât reach all of the ends of the Greek world.
They fell into a short conversation in Greek and Annabeth smiled politely next to Percy as she fell entirely out of place. The evil Duolingo owl didnât prepare her for this experience. Neither did her mother bother teaching her at least their Athenian dialect properly. She could introduce herself in Greek, order a beer, say goodbye and that was it. Thank you, Athena. For nothing again.
âOh, you must be Annabeth,â Megaera eyed her carefully and Annabeth had the feeling that she could split her open with her hands. Weirdly enough, Annabeth was kind of into it. Megaera wasnât only as tall as Percy but she was clearly the one with the toughest workout regimen as she displayed her muscular legs and defined arms with a short cocktail dress only a few shades darker than her hair.
âYes,â Annabeth squeaked. She nearly added a maâam towards the end. Megaera cocked her dark eyebrow. She had an aura that demanded respect.
âInteresting to see the woman who captured Perseusâ heart. It seems that he did develop a good taste after all. Calypso was as pretty as the crescent moon flower but sadly as dull as his corny jokes are.â Megaeraâs deep smirk was a stamp of approval as her eyes roamed all over Annabeth.
âHey!â Percy interrupted and placed a firm hand on Annabethâs waist, as if he was trying to mark his territory.
âYou have your own toys right to your right,â he then added with a playful tone.
Megaera actually laughed and waved dismissively. âThat doesnât mean there isnât room for more.â A clear offer which left Annabethâs face turn into a fiery tomato red.
âAnyway, we have some catching up to do,â Thanatos proposed as Zagreus and he silently watched the conversation blossom. He sounded as reserved as he looked.
âIndeed,â Zagreus agreed, surprising Annabeth with a posh English accent. âFather will murder me if we miss out on his moussaka. Itâs to die for you need to try it, Annabeth, at least before Hephaestus gets ahead of himself.â
Annabeth laughed. The Theodoropoulos did have their positives. âI will, Zagreus,â she nodded.
âOh please, if aunt Sally gave her go for you to stay here, youâre as good as family. Weâre Than, Zag and Meg for you,â Zagreus offered.
âAnnabeth is already my nickname but thank you for the kind offer!â
The three new guests went on to join relatives and friends at the party which seemed to get more chaotic by each passing minute as the volume seemed to increase.
âMy cousin Zagreus from my uncle Hadesâ side,â Percy explained as the three went out of his sight.
âAre they friends? OrâŚâ
âPretty sure theyâre polyamorous. You know, I donât know, and I honestly donât really care, I see Zag once every twelve months at max. Just donât stick to Megâs side for too long otherwise sheâll turn you into her fiancĂŠ.â Percyâs tone suggested that he was not joking.
âOh.â Annabeth didnât know what to think of it.
Percy closed his eyes as if he was making a silent prayer, before his sea-green met Annabethâs light gray ones. She smelled like lemon with a hint of lavender, instead of roses like normally. Delicious. If it werenât for the fact that it was Annabeth.
âSo, listen. You know Iâve talked about Dionysus Day and how his birthday brings out the worst side of everyone.â
Annabeth nodded as Percy went on to explain.
âPre-Dionysus Day is basically same with the only exception that my great-grandmotherâs house is filled with the entire family. Yes, weâre expected to eat, drink, laugh, drink, dance, drink, reminisce on our past, drink, make fools out of ourselves in order for them to take blackmail pictures and drink some more, but no matter how much they want you to open up⌠try to control yourself. Everything you say can and will be used against you.â
Annabethâs stomach started to churn, and her knees slightly gave in. âLook, Iâm truly sorry for the mess that Iâve caused,â Percy looked directly into her eyes and tried to ignore the rosy streaks across her flushed cheeks. âAnd my relatives can be overbearing. But if we manage to stick through this night and the next one tomorrow, weâre as good as done with playing games.â
âFine,â Annabeth gritted through her teeth. She had agreed to the terms and condition. She didnât need a reminder of the stupid decision she made two months ago.
âLetâs go.â
She placed her hand on the doorknob that separated the parlor from the huge living room. Percy followed her as she opened the door. A wave of laughter, wine, ouzo, discovered secrets, cigarettes, sweat and fun hit them.
âOh wow, someone should open a window.â Percy suggested as he coughed. Luckily cousin Metis had the same idea. No, aunt Metis. Or was it Thetis? Why did Percy need to have so many relatives with similar names again?
âOh, Annabeth, look at you!â Aphrodite had snuck up behind them and surprised the fake couple by hugging each of them and nearly spilling the expensive Greek vintage in her hand on Percyâs shirt. The red alcoholic liquid carelessly swirled in her glass and more than often seemed to want to escape from her clutch.
âAphrodite, be careful!â Percy reminded her as she dug her fingers into his arm. Her nails were as fake and bought as was the bond between Annabeth and Percy.
âOh, please cousin, you should learn how to loosen up!â She laughed, but it sounded more like the shrill sound a bird made when it got nearly hit by a car. The high pitch made Annabeth slightly frown.
âTake your girl upstairs and show her all the Zorbas moves you got!â She wiggled her badly overdrawn eyebrows.
Aphrodite had always been the poster child of perfection. She knew how to dress her curvaceous body the right way, she knew how to apply the perfect touches of makeup on her face and she was the most graceful being Annabeth had ever met. Seeing her so disheveled left the blonde American content. It showed that Aphrodite wasnât one of the gods, she was a mortal mess like they all were. That, and it was kind of funny seeing the abrupt transition from oozing perfection to looking like a rough mess after a couple of glasses of wine.
âIf you know what I mean, you two know what I mean, right?â
âYes,â Annabeth and Percy answered. Unfortunately, they did.
âThat reminds me, this is such a pretty dress that you got!â Aphroditeâs eyes widened and she tugged at Annabethâs sleeve that went slightly over her elbows. âPercy needs to bring me a couple of those the next time he visits. Oh wait! Youâre about to marry, Annabeth can take me shopping. I want to visit New York next summer. When was your wedding again?â
Panic filled Annabeth she tried to stutter a lame excuse like they had done the entirety of the stay. Aphroditeâs brown eyes found something else to focus on in the meantime. Her hand went out to poke the tall blondeâs chest as she went on to pull on the thin fabric.
âYou should show the men what you got! Free the girls!â Aphrodite yelled over the loud music, pushing Annabethâs C cup to its limits. âLet Percy stand in the corner with that stupid frown, all jealous and depressed while youâre out on the hunt!â
Percy did not look amused especially since he tried to pull Annabeth away.
âYeah, just like that!â Aphroditeâs glass pointed directly at his face as Annabeth tried to shove Aphroditeâs fickle fingers aside. âOh, if I were just a little bit younger and not tied to your cousinâŚâ
âYou mean cousins,â Percy corrected and made a step backwards as Aphroditeâs dreamy and drunk dazed focus shifted from Annabeth to him.
âAphrodite, leave Percy and his future wife alone,â Hera arrived to save the stressed couple and rolled her eyes. âGo harass Hephaestus and try to be a faithful wife for once in your life.â
She still looked like she had a massive stick shoved up her ass by the way she stood entirely straight next to them, but Annabeth appreciated the gesture. If Hera didnât like Aphrodite much, Annabeth would rather join Team Hera than stand alone by the bleachers and under Aphroditeâs charmspeak. Aphrodite pouted and stomped with her feet twice as if she were a toddler and not a grown woman marching towards her forties. Then she stormed off and ran into the arms of her lover, nother husband to spite her mother-in-law and embarrass her even further.
âMalĂ ka,â Hera cursed and lost her cool for one second, before clearing her throat and focusing on the already tired fake engaged couple in front of her. Not even Hera seemed to be averse from drinking a glass of wine or two. âYou two definitely need a drink.â
Annabeth agreed with her for once.
She pointed at the bar behind her, which was managed by Dionysus and his wife Ariadne. The number of relatives ganging up on them and demanding new drinks was frightening. Surprisingly Dionysus kept his cool and shoved drinks in peopleâs hands at an impressive speed.
âYeah, letâs get over with it,â Percy sighed and took Annabethâs hand again.
âAre you okay?â Annabeth asked him. She knew from Thalia that Percy rarely ever drank and that his family was to blame for most of it. Percy seemed stiffer and graver than usual as well. As much as she disliked his jokey nature and easy-going demeanor he displayed at work, sheâd much rather have that Percy by her side right now. Dionysus Day and the day before seemed like it was hell on earth for him and walking through it each year must take a toll on him.
âYeah, letâs just each grab a glass of wine. Let them be happy about me shoving this disgusting stuff down my throat.â He thanked Ariadne as she prepared two glasses of the same vintage Aphrodite seemed to have inhaled earlier.
âThank you.â Annabeth took her glass and sniffed. The wine smelled sickly sweet with a hint of the bitterness that the fermentation process had left. The glass in her hand weighed surprisingly heavy, not because of the wine itself but because of the golden swirls decorating it. The glass transitioned from the crystal-clear transparency into a deep black. A lyre surrounded by a bigger laurel wreath decorated the middle section and a golden snake was wrapped around the stem. The golden rim gave it a nice finish.
âInto a fruitful night,â Percy darkly mumbled over the music. He was really not looking forward to it, which confused Annabeth immensely. She didnât understand why he pushed himself through this if he really didnât like the drinking activities. He surely had his reasons, hence her not starting a fight with him over it. It was his family and their tradition after all.
âInto a fruitful night,â Annabeth instead repeated.
Issuing a weird toast as well. Percy Jackson was clearly not a drinker. Their glasses clinked and each of them took a sip. Thankfully grandma Rhea made sure they were well-fed before the festivities began.
âFuck,â Annabeth muttered. A fine vintage as well. Not as sweet as she thought, it left a hint of sweet cumin as the lingering aftertaste. Her lipstick left a mark on the glass, but she didnât bother to care as she took another gulp. The wine was nearly finished. She slowly started to understand why ancient civilizations went crazy after this stuff.
As she looked at her so-called fiancĂŠ, she saw that his glass was already empty. A grimace rested on his face as well.
âErr, Percy?â
âWhat?â The dark brooding look on his face was no more.
âShouldnât you take it easy?â Annabeth carefully asked. His eyes narrowed.
âI am,â he stated and cocked his head towards his cousin who was still busy playing the barkeeper but kept an overall watchful glimpse on the guests that flooded the gates.
âDionysus saw me drink. Most importantly he saw us have a drink. That should be enough for me, but if you want some more, be my guest.â He shrugged.
Annabeth felt that she should probably drag his mopey ass out of the party, but it was way too early to leave. âFine,â she said and asked Ariadne for a refill. Annabeth went in for another long sip. She should definitely stock her wine cabinet once she was back at her shitty apartment. Before the glass reached her lips again, Hermes snatched it away and chugged the remaining wine.
âHermes, what the hell?!â Ariadne grabbed the glass and pushed her husbandâs cousin away. The bored postman was back with his shenanigans.
âMy bad, dear wifey, but Iâm on a mission here to abduct sweet Annabeth,â Hermes winked and placed his hands around Annabethâs shoulders.
âWhat are you up to?â Out of all of the relatives sheâs met so far, Annabeth was convinced that everything Zeus had ever sired was a mistake. Zeus himself was a mistake.
âCan you stop being German and boring for once?â he joked. Annabethâs eyes narrowed. She did not like this one bit. She turned her head around and saw that Percy had been pulled into a conversation by Hypnos and Morpheus. He had completely forgotten about her. Great.
Hermes guided her through the crowd, towards the middle of the room. They had to dodge chairs, drunk relatives, a sofa, chatty relatives, the coffee table and dancing relatives before they made it.
âThere she is!â greeted Achilles the confused marketing manager.
Paris, Helen, Patroclus, Hermes and Achilles stood in a circle around a table. Dozens of shots of all sorts of colors were displayed. Annabeth had a terrible feeling about this.
âWhat is this and why are you pulling me into this?â Annabeth asked and did not like the mischievous grin they all shared. She wanted to go back home and cuddle with Daedalus on her sofa and push his cat ass out of the way before the next steamy Outlander scene hit the screen. Yes, Annabeth was that much of a single that seeing some on-screen action was the best she could get. She hoped that the mangy cat didnât bother Thalia all too much while she was staying in Greece. She owed her so much already.
âWell, I stayed in your country,â Paris started. âAnd they have a weird tradition with ouzo. They donât drink it the way we do, watered down and slowly at lunch and what notâŚâ
Annabeth was still American for the most part and had nothing to do with Germany. The last time she stayed there was nearly thirteen years ago. She didnât want to have anything to do with Germany. Friedrich Chase lived in Germany. And she fucking hated Friedrich Chase. Therefore, she hated Germany. Things that would never change. Okay, Hamburg was a cool city and she was glad her father moved to Cologne. Should she feel the urge to travel back to Germany for a week or less, sheâd go to Hamburg, take ten thousand pictures, and post them on Instagram the minute before she was boarding her flight back to New York. Helping her to enrage her stupid father was all Germany had to offer.
âGermans do ouzo shots,â Patroclus cut to the chase. âAnd since youâre the newest member of our familyâŚâ
âAnd German!â Paris and Hermes added simultaneously.
âWeâve decided to play this little game,â Achilles added.
âWhatâs the name of the game?â Annabeth asked. She was only slightly curious. Emphasis on slightly.
âLast man standing. Oh sorry, ladies. Last person standing,â Hermes corrected himself as he placed four shots in front of each person. That was way too much hard liquor to handle. But if she did Jägermeister bombs in her sophomore year of college without any issues, this should be fairly easy.
âWhat are the rules?â They all looked at her in silence. No rules. No prize. Just drink.
âOh wow.â The urge to roll her eyes and walk off came back with a force.
âI think Iâm going to pass,â Annabeth said and already turned to her right.
âWhy?â Helen asked innocently. âNeed your man to look after you? The one whoâs having an amazing time back there with his third glass of wine?â
Foul game. Annabethâs head shot to the right. Helen was right. Percy was laughing and looked like he was having a great time chatting with Oceanus and his wife Tethys. Tethys refilled his glass as her husband and Percy broke into laughter once again.
If thatâs the caseâŚ
âFuck it, Iâm in,â Annabeth agreed. She swallowed the bait and she knew it. There was no reason why she should feel upset about Percy opening up all of a sudden. He desperately needed it. Why she wished to be a part of that, Annabeth did not know.
âGreat!â Helen threw her brown mane over her shoulders and grabbed the first glass.
âÎΚι ΟιĎ!â they all yelled and chugged the liquor. Gia mas, the Greek toast, was repeated every time and it seemed to brighten the mood, despite resting heavily on Annabethâs stomach. Her college days were over, but she was glad she resisted coughing repeatedly.
Patroclus clutched his stomach after the second shot, Helen ran out after the third, Paris and Achilles were laughing maniacally after the fourth and Hermes mysteriously disappeared after the first one. Annabeth was the last person standing. She placed the crystalized shot glass back on the table and examined the messes around her. The only thing that had happened to her, were that more golden locks escaped from her bun and her lipstick needed some reapplying as she left marks on each glass.
Annabeth tried to take a step away from the table and felt how the world slightly shifted around her. The fact that she would curse and hate herself for her behavior in just six hours, was something drunk Annabeth gladly put aside. The headaches that definitely would haunt her for the rest of the trip didnât matter, she won and that was all she cared about.
âHell yeah!â she yelled as all inhibition faded away, leaving pure and raw life force behind. Unbeknownst to her, Annabeth had moved right into the circle of dancers.
âPerseus, get your bride before she breaks her legs!â someone laughed. Was it Iapetus? Or was it Hyperion? Who even cared at that point?
The next two hours were a blurred mess. A blackout slowly crept through her mind, leaving foggy memories behind. Annabeth felt how she was dancing with people and how people were laughing. Were they laughing at her or with her? Did it really matter? Why was her hair repeatedly slapping her face, didnât she tie it up?
She danced with different people, men and women. She really hoped that the guy that looked like a naked Danny DeVito with longer black hair was not Zeus who had lost his shirt and pants. Who was the guy with the sea-green eyes again? Why was he clapping and laughing whenever she was busting a move next to Hermes? Was he important? Why did he remind her of work? The shots might have been a short-sighted idea after one and a half glasses of wine. She probably overestimated the amount of food she had consumed at dinner prior. Wasnât she supposed to try someoneâs moussaka?
âThere you are! Ares, stop dancing with her for once. Weâre about to leave.â
Ugh. Ares. Not Zeus, but still yucky.
Sea-green eyes. Percy, of course. How could she have forgotten the asshole that brought her into this whole mess? He seemed fairly sober, didnât he have a glass or three of wine? Annabeth was certain, sheâd be able to drink him under the table. His height and his build might put him at an advantage, but if he wasnât used to drinking, she might have a fair shot.
A rock song was the next song that appeared. Percy wanted to drag Annabeth off the dance floor.
âOh no!â Aphrodite intervened with a shrill screech. âGive the two lovers some room to show each other affection!â
Hera actually raised her glass for once to show that she actually agreed with one of Aphroditeâs wild ideas. Someone fumbled with the playlist and a Greek slow jam roared through the old speakers.
âAre you guys fucking serious?â Percy muttered under his breath. But roughly eighty pairs of eyes were all but watching the soon-to-be betrothed and waited for a romantic dance which reminded Percy more of the horrors that the eight-grade dance was.
Annabeth drunkenly hiccupped and looked at him in surprise as she felt one of his hands around her waist and the other one taking her hand. They rocked as if it was the final dance at prom. Annabeth barely remembered prom. Oh right. Her mother had forbidden her from going. She never attended prom.
A casual glimpse through the crowd showed her that people were actually filming this nonsense and some women were actually cooing. Did⌠did they seriously think this back and forth with sweaty clothes on was romantic? Her eyes found Percyâs again.
âSoâŚâ he began.
âSoâŚâ she repeated.
âCareful!â he warned her before twirling her through the tight circle. People screamed and applauded. A camera flash blitzed through the darkness twice.
âOof,â Annabeth groaned. Her stomach and equilibrium did not appreciate that sudden movement.
âIâm sorry, I wonât do that again,â Percy swore. The rocking motion made both of them sleepy. Annabeth suppressed a yawn, rested her head on his shoulder. Percy could make the perfect comfy bed, if he wanted to.
Percy, sensing that people were awaiting some action from either of them, placed a finger under her chin and lifted her face up. Annabethâs eyes widened. Is he going to kiss me in front of them? Again? her panicked brain asked. She was turned into stone, not by Percyâs distant cousin Medusa who had eaten most of the truffles, but by the tenderness of his actions. He was one solid actor.
Percy placed a soft kiss on her forehead, before moving on to a temple. Annabeth blushed and buried her heated face in his chest as he released her. Intimate, soft and sweet. The screaming relatives disrupted their comfortable silence yet again. The slow song came to an end and the next upbeat one invited everyone back to the dance floor. Annabeth released herself from Percyâs tight embrace and just bolted. Damned be nausea. A wave of coldness hit her. She felt something she didnât like the minute Percy had softly kissed and soberness woke her at a start. What was it? Anger? Disappointment? Longing? She didnât know and she didnât want to know.
âAnnabeth!â Percy shouted, but the amount of people standing in his way made it more difficult for him to keep up with her. His hand brushed over his own lips.
Annabeth opened and closed doors left and right. The kitchen, the dining room, the smoking room. She hasted through the first floor until she found another lost soul in the fireplace room. Why the villa had a fireplace room in the first place, she did not know. It had been super-hot the entire time but what Annabeth understood as heat and what native Greeks deemed as hot temperatures didnât have to correlate.
Great-grandmother Gaiaâs humming faded away. The eldest of the Theodoropoulos looked up from the pair of socks she was knitting. When she came to find out the intruder was Annabeth, joy spread over her face.
âCome, come!â The broken English that she softly spoke reminded Annabeth of her own grandmother. She hadnât seen Elsbeth Lilienthal-Chase since she had left Germany. And since her mother didnât give her a chance to say goodbye, she didnât have a phone number to reach her with. The only way would be through that asshole Friedrich Chase, and the only time sheâd willingly let someone contact that man was if she had been six feet under and he would be forced to show up for one important family event for once.
âI was unable to sleep. Parties arenât something for me. Iâm too old and boring for my children and their children,â Gaia sighed as Annabeth took a seat on the green sofa next to the light blue armchair. All of the cushioning seemed to have been made by Gaia as the socks had the same pattern as the pillow that Annabeth leaned against. Balls of wool surrounded the older woman as if she sat on a field of fresh tulips.
âDrink, drink! You need water. Iâm pretty sure you danced a lot.â
Annabeth kindly took the offer, grabbed the carafe and poured herself a little bit of water into a small glass. The water was surprisingly cold and refreshing.
âMy children deem me crazy,â Gaia continued. âThe war with the ottomans. Deportation. Fleeing and seeing death everywhere. Losing my father in the chaos. Then the big world war after that twenty years later. They donât want to listen to the same stories. They only want to have fun. So, they sent me away.â
Annabeth felt terrible for the old lady. It looked like she had been through hell and back in her youth. She didnât look like she needed much, only someone to listen to her.
âI wonât bore you much,â promised Gaia.
Gaiaâs tanned leathery hands continued working on the little socks. âDonât worry about tomorrow, dearie. We have plenty of acetaminophen and other hangover remedies. Tomorrow will be even worse, because Dionysus wants to celebrate his birthday with even more wine,â the old woman laughed, and her green eyes twinkled full of life.
âI also was young onceâŚâ
The two sat in comfortable silence, only interrupted by Gaiaâs humming or Annabeth refilling her glass of water.
âSo,â Gaia began.
âSo?â repeated Annabeth.
âYou are the woman that tamed my little Perseus,â the older woman grinned.
Oh no.
Annabeth had a lump in her throat and drinking water to solve it, didnât work. She wasnât just lying to Zeus and his wife. She was lying to an entire clan, from the youngest to the oldest members. What Percy and she were doing wasnât right, neither was it fair. Sure, Percyâs shitty uncle didnât help much by forcing him to marry the next person, but did the rest of the family deserve to be deceived as well? No, they didnât, and that truth rested heavily on Annabethâs narrow shoulders.
The fact that Gaia looked so much like her great-grandson was crazy. They possessed the exact same shade of sea-green. It was passed onto Rhea, Percyâs grandmother, and then Poseidon, Percyâs fucked up father. Always full of intelligence and calculation. Shifting easily from delighted and full of life to the crashing anger of a storm. Power and knowledge were key features of Gaiaâs eyes.
âHow did you meet my sweet Perseus again?â Gaia innocently asked but Annabeth knew that there was some sort of ulterior motive behind her question.
âAt work,â she honestly answered, and Gaia smiled. The old lady was able to sense the truth.
âHeâs not my direct boss, but we run into each other a lot. And we hated each other from the moment we saw each other.â Annabeth remembered how she accidentally spilled her hot coffee all over his shirt. She had been public enemy number one from then on.
âHeâs an excellent boss, as much as I hate to admit it. He knows his ways around and is passionate about the ocean and its inhabitants. Definitely more passionate than me, Iâm just there for the money. He actually wants to make a difference. And heâs extremely annoying, might I add.â
Gaia burst into laughter and needed a minute to calm down. Annabeth cracked a toothy grin. âAh yes, I can see how you fell in love with him.â
Doom. Uneasiness. Discomfort. The lump in Annabethâs throat grew bigger and bigger. Why was her vision so blurry all of a sudden? She looked down at her dress. Dark dots appeared. More sprinkled across her lap as Annabeth realized she was crying.
âIâm so sorry,â Annabeth sniffled. âI⌠Percy⌠IâŚâ
Gaia put her knitting utensils aside and set herself upright in the armchair. âOh no, what is going on, Annabeth?â
The calming hand on her back did not help the young professional at all. No, Gaiaâs honesty and curiosity made it way worse.
âPercy and I⌠weâre not engaged. We did it because Zeus-â Annabeth tried to confess, but Gaia brushed her off.
âItâs okay, Annabeth. I know,â the old woman smiled.
The tears that smeared her foundation or rather what was left of it ceased to fall. âYou what?!â
Shock widened Annabethâs light gray eyes.
âI knew from the minute you stepped into my house. Iâm pretty sure Rhea knows as well.â
Annabethâs jaw fell open. âB-but how?!â she stuttered and felt like an utter and complete idiot. The first few days had been rough and difficult, but now she thought that Percy and she conveyed the illusion of being a happy couple.
âYou were scared of everything including him the minute you arrived,â Gaia warmly smiled. The infectious warm smile of a grandma looking out for her little chicks. Was Annabeth now one of them?
âI knew something was off with that sudden engagement of yours with the way you two behaved. Either you were pregnant, or it was a ruse. Since you are heavily drinking and paper thin, it was clear that there was no pregnancy. You young people truly donât eat enough anymore,â Gaia shrugged, patted Annabethâs knee and went back to knitting the sock.
âBut now⌠it all makes sense. You do feel something for each other. Even if you are blind to it for now.â She continued to hum. âI just hope that my dear Perseus will be the young and carefree boy he was all those years ago one day again. And I do believe that you are the key in finding him hidden underneath all those layers and walls he had put up due to his father.â
Annabeth didnât even close her mouth during the elderâs monologue. Did Gaia seriously connote that she⌠that Annabeth Chase⌠might feel something for her soon-to-be boss? Madness. Absolute madness. She took everything she had thought of the friendly old woman in front of her back. Maybe her relatives did have a point, when they decided to brush Gaia off due to her old age.
Annabeth? And feeling something for Percy? If that something was hatred and the utmost rage, absolutely yes. But⌠anything else? She would receive a hefty sum on her bank account and would put in her two weeks the minute she found a better job in California.
âYou know⌠there is a tale Iâd like to tell about men.â
And Annabeth would prefer to place the glass back on the table, throw the heels away, storm out and run to the next airport.
âThey are stupid vapid creatures,â Gaia carried on.
Annabeth snorted behind her glass. âThat is certainly true,â she agreed and earned an honest grin from Gaia.
âMy dear husband Ouranos with whom I had all of my dear children decided one day that one woman was not enough. And that twelve children were not enough.â
Twelve children?! Annabeth's womb just twisted and turned in protest. The shocked expression on Annabethâs face made Gaia chortle loudly.
âOh yes, back in my day we were all very fruitful,â Gaia affirmed.
âThat sounds horrible,â Annabeth interjected.
âOh, only the birth part and the eighteen years after it,â the older woman dismissed her which made Annabeth in turn laugh again.
âMy father was a farmer and he had one piece of advice: never let someone toy with you. You are not a doll; you are a person with morals and dignity, a person with feelings and dignity. Let no one, especially not a man, treat you like a commodity or something to kick around. Well⌠when dear Ouranos left me and sought our neighbor with bigger breasts⌠I taught him that lesson. And I did so with my fatherâs trusted knife that I hung on the wall afterwards.â
There was no knife displayed on the wall. It was a fucking scythe. Large, frightening, brutal. A golden great long sickle with jagged teeth rested on the wall as if it were ready to cut you up into one thousand pieces. Was there really dried blood stuck on the teeth or was Annabethâs drunken mind making things up?
âThe minute our youngest turned eighteen he took off and was never seen again. And now, should a person, in that case my Perseus, not know how to treat you properly, you know what to do,â Gaia advised and took a sip out of her own glass.
âUh⌠you mean threaten to cut his genitals off with a large and sharp family heirloom?â Annabethâs eyes widened again.
âNo, dearieâŚâ Gaia gave it some thought. âWell maybe so, dearie,â she then went on. That made Annabeth chuckle again.
âBut demand absolute respect from him. Donât ask him for it. Demand it. I donât know how but he has dragged you into our family and expects you to play the perfect fiancĂŠ. This will eventually blow up in his face and he will drag you along with him. Teach him a lesson, however.â
âYou know what? I will!â With Gaiaâs official blessing, Annabeth was all smiles and scheming new plots. If the head of the family gave her the approval of kicking Percyâs ass, she definitely would.
Steps echoed in the fireplace room and Annabeth and Gaiaâs heads turned to greet the intruder. They didnât even realize the door opened and closed again.
Gaiaâs younger twin who still had some black streaks in the braids marched into the hall, curious about what the two women in front of her were previously talking about. Gaiaâs youngest daughter Rhea had joined them. The large blue floral dress made her seem like she never left the late 1960s and the two long braids only added to that sentiment.
âMamĂĄ, what is going on? By the way Percy is looking for you, Annabeth,â Rhea informed her grandsonâs alleged fiancĂŠ before taking a seat in front of her and grabbing one of the many balls of yarn in front of her mother. Rhea then went on to play with it as if she was a six-year old.
âOh no, Rhea, Annabeth and I were just chatting about love and life,â Gaia batted her eyelashes.
âYou see, I gave Rhea the same advice about her disgraceful husband when he went out to seek another woman.â
Rhea rolled her eyes behind the large pentagonally glasses. âYou and your stories about the scythe, mother,â she sighed.
âI have to make sure the younger generation knows!â Gaia huffed. âI wonât be here for much longer and then-â
âWe'll regret all the things weâve said and done to you, I know mamĂĄ, you have been telling me this since I was four years old and spilled my apple juice,â Rhea completed her motherâs sentence.
Rheaâs attention shifted to the smiling blonde in front of her. She grew to like Percyâs fiancĂŠ. She had a fire within herself and a backbone, all great things to handle a Theodoropoulos man.
âBut my mother is right when she says that the scythe is a trusted tool. Zeus, Poseidon and Hades did scare Kronos with it after he tried some foul things with their sisters. Treated them worse. Did overall horrible things. He never wanted daughters, only sons. Didnât seem to accept the fact that it was out of my hand.â Rhea squished the ball of light blue yarn in her hand.
âMy children were always looking out for me and I will be forever grateful for them. I do hope that you will have the same feelings and love for your children.â It was clear who their father was supposed to be.
âYes, I hope so as well,â Annabeth squeaked. Did it get hotter in here all of a sudden?
The door opened, and a worried Percy stepped into the fireplace room. âOh, there you are,â he sighed as he immediately sighted Annabethâs blonde unruly curls. He had been running from the basement all the way to the roof searching for her. Relief washed over his face like some shower gel from a cheap commercial. Only then did he realize that Annabeth had been cornered by both his nosy grandmother and his even nosier great-grandmother.
âWhatever theyâve been telling you, itâs a lie, itâs wrong and it never happened!â he warned her as he took a seat right next to her.
âOh please, relax,â Rhea rolled her eyes and threw the wool at her grandson. âWe have been talking about mamĂĄâs scythe.â
âHey!â both Percy and Gaia complained. At least they hadnât dished out embarrassing stories of him taking off in diapers at night.
âThis is expensive! You young people show no respect towards others' belongings,â Gaia cursed.
Annabeth took the blue yarn and placed it back on top of the pyramid of other colors.
âThank you!â Gaia smiled before she focused on finishing the sock.
âYouâve found your fiancĂŠ, Perseus. Now go off back to celebrate and let us old people reminisce about the past and talk.â Rhea lazily waved at them whilst Gaia didnât even look up from her craft.
âWe will,â Percy said while getting up and casually dragging Annabeth along. He kissed both Gaia and Rhea on the cheek, Annabeth threw a hasty âSee you in the morning!â over her shoulder before the couple left.
âAre you okay?â Percy asked as he pulled Annabeth aside for a small breather.
She nodded. âItâs just a bit overwhelming with the amount of people that either want to take pictures of us, hope I remember when their youngest kidâs birthday is, or they tell me they hope we have our first baby preferably in less than a year.â
Percy blushed. He didnât think it was that bad, but then again, men are mostly left out of the baby talk until their motherâs saw that their best friendâs children had their first grandbaby. He truly didnât have any intention of having a child before the age of forty. He had to save a business from his damned uncle, run and manage said business and preferably find a woman he tolerated enough to marry before he could even think of children.
Percy apologized again. âOne week,â he promised her.
âOne week,â Annabeth repeated and nodded.
âWeâre going in, youâve missed the high of the party with your talk with my yai yai, but thatâs perfectly fine. The first have already left, letâs just mingle for ten minutes or so before we can-â
The door flung open. âThere they are!â yelled Hermes who was followed by Zephyrus and Hercules.
None of them had any intention of letting the party stop before five in the morning. It was merely two. The minute Hermes had his sights on Annabeth, he knew that he had found his best drinking buddy aside from Dionysus himself. Oh no, Annabeth thought and rightfully so.
The minutes of calmness and rest next to Gaia did their wonders because Percy and she were thrust back into the party at full force. She didnât exactly remember when the blackout happened, but it was roughly thirty minutes later. She was drinking, she was dancing, she was completely making a fool out of herself. The hair? A mess. Annabeth herself? Donât even think about it. She had been dancing with Hermes and Patroclus, Aphrodite accidentally stepped on her foot one time when Ares approached her.
Percy broke his own promise and accepted a fourth glass of wine from Dionysus who insisted on it. That glass was his doom. The last droplet touched his tongue and his world turned into a flashy mist, his consciousness was broken into pieces, fragmented and sprinkled across the floor. Where he was, when he was and who he was were things he couldnât remember. The only thing that popped up in his mind were waves of solid gold. Was it hair? Could hair truly move like that and possess that texture? And a whiff of lemon with a hint of lavender crawled up his nose. It was an odd combination, but it felt safe and like home. He liked this smell. Where did he smell this before?
Percy didnât care, he had other matters to attend to. The first thing on the docket was finding the bathroom, he had drunk way too much. The house had weird rules in regard to bathrooms. Was it the left side or the right side that the young men could use? Why did his uncle Hades have to break two sinks in a span of a week when he was sixteen again? Why were women and others allowed to do whatever they wanted? His great-grandma and her weird plans were always set to make him fail somehow. Things that she had thought of decades ago still bore fruit today.
Percy stumbled upstairs and turned right and prayed the doors he was opening were empty bathrooms and not relatives making out. That was just what he needed. The first door he opened was of his great-uncle Oceanus and Tethys who had a face mask on her face and pink curlers up her hair. At least the old people still knew how to behave. He hoped his mother had left the party hours ago. He apologized and closed the door. The next one was an empty bedroom, his even maybe. No, his bedroom was on an entirely different floor. Or was it?
The next bedroom was closed off thank god, but from the sounds on the inside it seemed like cousin Eos and her newest catch Orion had some fun. Disgusting, Percy thought before he moved on. The next door was what he was looking for. A bathroom. Lit up, clean and empty. Empty if it wasnât for this one woman who was clutching the brims of the polished sink. She was tall, the golden hair equaled a rat nest and her red dress seemed to have witnessed a lot.
âUgh,â she muttered and looked into the mirror. Her eyes found his immediately.
âPercy?â she turned around.
Oh right. He was Percy Jackson, thirty-one, single, hopefully the new CEO of Atlantic INC., he had a fantastic apartment in the Upper East Side with an amazing view and he was in Greece to impress his family with his fake fiancĂŠ in order to secure his fatherâs legacy. His fake fiancĂŠ being Annabeth Chase, a woman he loathed, had to pay a little hush money and hoped would leave the company fairly soon after.
âYouâre in the menâs restroom,â Percy then stated.
Annabeth looked around. No, it was not the same bathroom she used in the morning. Oh yeah, Gaiaâs weird bathroom rules.
âHonestly who cares?â the junior marketing manager complained. âA toiletâs a toilet, no matter who uses it.â
Percy shrugged. Annabeth had a point but it wasnât their house so they couldnât dictate the rules.
âI wanted to retouch my makeup, but I didnât find my makeup bag.â She walked steadily to Percy, but it was clear to both of them that she had her fair amount of shots in her system.
âYeah, itâs probably in the other bathroom. Wait, let me use the bathroom for a second and then we can head back to our room and you can look for your makeup.â
Annabeth nodded and waited on the outside while Percy was tending his business. After drying his hands, he opened the door and found Annabeth yawning in front of one of his yai yaiâs paintings. It showed the scythe from the fireplace.
âIn all honesty, your great-grandmother is an amazing woman. I admire her. Showing kindness and strength each day. How old is she?â
âTurning 106 next October,â Percy smiled at her. âShe always said she wanted to live long enough to see her favorite descendants find their own happiness, whatever it may be.â
The softness in his voice made Annabethâs heart ache. She turned her head back to the painting. She was a nobody. She had no family, no traditions she could upkeep. She didnât even have a steady relationship in the past five years. Fucking Luke Castellan. He also had to take that from her as well. Make her suffer. Thatâs what Athena, Friedrich and Luke all thought at the same time. And they all had nearly reached their wicked goal if it hadnât been for her stubbornness and will to eventually blossom into something else. The first step towards that something else resided within her move to California. She wanted to leave everything and everyone behind and start a new life, somewhere where no one knew her.
A thumb brushed over her cheek. Annabeth looked up to Percy. She hadnât even realized she was sobbing again.
âWhatever it is, itâs going to be okay,â Percy assured her. His hands found her sides, pulling her into a soft hug.
A true fiancĂŠ level hug. Annabeth had never felt that comfortable within a manâs reach. Percy might have been an awful and annoying coworker, but he truly cared about his fellow people. The way they slowly rocked and kept hugging each other reminded her of the school dance work they had put on the floor earlier. But this time it was real. This time there was no one taking pictures or yelling into their ears, or the demand to see a kiss.
Annabeth rested her face in his chest and Percy leaned his head on hers. It was like they had been made for each other. A welcoming scent greeted Percy. Lemon and lavender. The person stuck in Percyâs crumbled mind had been Annabeth. She was his anchor in the havoc his relatives had created in such a short time. He took a deeper breath. It felt reassuring.
âDid you just sniff me?â Annabeth laughed as she pulled away from him.
âYou do smell good!â he defended himself with a stupid grin on his mouth.
âOh, wait youâre super drunk,â she giggled again as she saw his widened pupils that had pushed the darkened sea-green iris away.
âWell, look at you,â he retorted.
They looked at each other. Aside from the bumping music and the noises people made downstairs it had been completely silent. He missed her warmth; she missed his comfort. Neither would have guessed that a simple embrace could offer so much. Neither would have thought they would take it to the next step within a split second.
One last look. A last time sea-green and light-gray met before each set of eyes closed and their lips met with a brutal force in the middle. Their teeth clacked but it didnât matter to them. What mattered now, was the moment. Forgotten was the alcohol, forgotten were the troubles of past, present and future. Forgotten were the friends and relatives in the building and back in New York.
So... what do you think? đ Like I said, this is not the entire chapter đ¤ˇđžââď¸ I honestly feel bad for cutting the chapter off because it's really getting more interesting from that point on đđžââď¸ I'll probably continue working on this once I've published the next act of The Fool đĽł
Also Greek people, if something seems off with this (aside from random English at times lol) hit me up, I definitely have to do more research!
